By FAR, the creepiest, scariest movie I've ever seen. To this day, when I'm in a long, deserted hallway in a hotel, especially staring at an elevator, I think of those two little girls on trikes. Chilling!... Heeeeere's Johnny!

A classic is the only word that can truly define this film. Really well shot, great acting for the most part (some little flaws here and there) and great character development. I highly recommend this film.

I'll be honest, I hate horror. The Shining is possibly the only horror film that has ever ingnited something within my interest. It's brilliant,daring and most importantly, not cliche. My first viewing of Stanley Kubrick's classic 'The Shining' left me somewhat...underwhelmed. As a 15 year old boy, my underdeveloped, action oriented brain, desired gore and cheap thrills...something that this film avoids. As a 15 year old boy, my underdeveloped, action oriented brain, desired gore and cheap thrills...something that this film avoids. Viewing 'The Shining' as an adult however, was a truly unforgettable experience. So here are my two cents.... Hearing the term 'adaptation of a Stephen King novel' makes me want to vomit. With such duds as 'Storm of the Century', 'Rose Red' and 'Tommyknockers' falling within this category, I was sceptical. But thankfully, Kubrick diverts drastically from the source material, playing down the supernatural elements of horror. The fear of the characters' deteriorating mental health, and the potential of what they could do to one another, is far more terrifying than the threat of ghosts. This makes for a human, relatable, and intelligent horror; more frightening than the typical ghost story. Kudos to the screenwriters for taking a chance. Like most Kubrick films, the performances are strangely enigmatic. Shelly Duvall's portrayal of the seemingly 'desperate to please' Wendy, was irritating in the initial stages of the film. There was a self-consciousness to the performance, that felt slightly superficial. HOWEVER, when the hysteria sets in, Duvall delivers the goods. She is chillingly authentic, and utterly electrifying. It actually heightens the experience in the final third of the film. Apparently Kubrick was a prick to her on set in order to 'push her' into that place...so thankyou for that! It's magic. I find Jack Nicholson a difficult actor to really warm to, and his performance here is no exception to that. It's over the top, comical, frightening...and unpredictably mad. I think I would have preferred Jack Torrance to be a more likeable character in the developing stages, but nonetheless, he is fascinating. And Danny Lloyd would have to go on the list of 'best child performances ever'. The facial expressions, body language, and the eyes, are completely believable and nuanced! They struck gold with him. Typical of Kubrick, the film is a visual spectacle. Even by todays standards, the cinematography is mesmerising - a testament to Kubrick and John Alcott. Visually, the film is so absorbing. The camera rarely stops moving, in inventive (but non-distracting) ways. There is a sense that the characters are being watched by 'another presence' that is constantly tracking their movements. The camera work is subtly unsettling. It is so refreshing for a modern audience to watch a film like this, that relies on a slow and contemplative build up, and resonating images for scares. There is a genuinely creepy tone throughout, and the climax absolutely soars with thrills. And, strangely enough for this genre, 'The Shining' gets better with every single viewing. A well deserved classic!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If there's one pure horror film that deserves the Best Picture Oscar just for its overall terrific (and terrifying) atmosphere, it's THE SHINING. I've only seen one of Stanley Kubrick's other films, which was 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, and if you think that Stanley Kubrick only makes those kinds of films, think again. This brilliant man takes mastermind Stephen King's already-horrific novel and crafts it into his own ingenious, twisted work that is probably more frightening than the book itself. And there's Jack Nicholson, who does an outstanding performance as psychopath Jack Torrance. When I saw this film, my immediate thought was that Nicholson's character was just as I imagined Torrance's personality while reading the source novel. It's possible to admit that sometimes Jack Nicholson does go a little loopy with his role, making it often seem more like his role as the Joker in BATMAN nine years later, but he never seems to go overboard, and his character always enhances the eerie-ness of the entire film. All in all, THE SHINING is a must-see. It's certainly not one of those "spewing guts" films where everything is grotesque blood and gore. Instead, the horror comes from the creepy, sadistic, intense mood, as this is a well-molded psychological horror. Add this to your shopping list (or your renting list) if you haven't seen it. See it again if you have already.… Expand

Honestly a strange film and not overly scary, but I think that's the point. Потрясающий классический триллер.
Единственное, что не понравилось - актёрская игра сына ГГ, но если ребёнку это ещё можно простить, то уж жена ГГ играет реально плохо, если бы не великолепный ДжекКнигу не читал, так что никаких сравнений...

Итог: Шедевр. Смотреть всем, а любителям ужасов и триллеров - в первую очередь, ведь куча фильмов того же жанра позже позаимствуют кучу идей из этого произведения искусства.… Expand

The music and slow unravelling plot really builds the suspense and mystery very well. The performances from the entire cast are perfect, really selling their characters and serving the tone of the story. The music is brilliant as well, adding a lot of tension to every scene. And finally the ending, but without spoiling it, I'll just say it is definitely worth the wait. The slow buildup of the movie and then the execution of the amazing ending really seals the deal for this movie. The Shining is a classic everyone needs to see.… Expand

What he couldn't know is that the place, where there were already dozens of deaths, is apparently a hot-spot of evil, that only his son can perceive. Its based on a novel by Stephen King, which I unfortunately haven't yet had the pleasure of reading, and is my favorite film of Stanley Kubrick's work. Although it contains extremely violent scenes of carnage and nudity, its relatively contained in comparison to other films I've already seen. From the very beginning, it creates a very pleasant suspense around John Torrence and his family, without ever specifying two things: the nature of John's son's gift and the nature of the evil that inhabits the hotel. Two things that it purposely leaves open, perhaps to increase the impact of the end. Jack Nicholson played the lead character and I think its fair to recognize that it was the most challenging and iconic role of his career. He was fantastic, and his body and facial expression helped immensely to make him more real. The same thing can be said of Shelley Duvall, who was incredible as Mrs. Torrence, harmonizing well feelings of disbelief, fear, powerlessness and urgency to act and protect herself and her child. The film has good special and visual effects, as well as an excellent and credible set. For the last, a final note to warn that it is a movie unsuitable for faint-hearted.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 'The Shining' is one of the finest horror films ever made, and one of Stanley Kubrick's most amazing achievements (however there was many more). It was the only horror movie Kubrick ever made, which may be positive on our part; because he was always motivated by a style that seldom had seen reproduction from other filmmakers, this allows one to look at the product from a neutral perspective, canceling out all standard comparisons to other horror movies, especially those that were also tailored from Stephen King novels (although King himself thinks Kubrick's adaptation of his novel was butchery, for some reason?). To say that the picture is one of a kind is accurate, but one in a million feels even more appropriate. It is in that small handful of the scariest horror movies ever made, and it distances itself from the typical 'slasher' genre, which is now very tiring, because no remake in made in the 2000s can beat out the original 1970s/1980s version.

Another equally amazing thing is, after all this time, is how well Kubrick used his actors, music and visuals to underscore the themes of the story itself. The technical details are prototypes in themselves, helping the story build massive tension; the long hallway shots, the eerie musical score, the use of words written backwards, the implication of a blizzard, and the tall, wide staircases establish a sense of uncertainty for both the audience and the individuals in the movie. Each of the characteristics are also evidence of the haunting craftsmanshipthe photography of the hotel, for instance, creates a portrait of breathtaking beauty long before the breakdown of the characters' lucidity chars our attraction to it.

The performances are just brilliant, but with the exception of Shelly Duvaull, while her performance as a caring mother is good, her mousy screams get very overacted, and tedious after a while. But Jack Nicholson was AMAZING in this film, his performance was strong, believable and terrifying. It is easily his best performance to date!

Overall, everything in The Shinning works brilliantly. Full of brilliant psychological scares and flawless imagery.… Expand

Holy **** this movie was amazing. The cast do an amazing job as playing the roles of these characters, they really make them come to life, especially Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) you can really tell with his character that he's really gotHoly **** this movie was amazing. Some creepy moments including what Jack Nicholson discovers in the bathtub in room 237 plus the Grady twins and the river of blood gushing from a hotel elevator... Beautifully directed with sometimes amazing scenery especially from the start. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s **** that Metacritic thinks it’s okay to give this iconic horror masterpiece a mere 66. This is on par with other Stephen King adaptations such as Carrie (1976), 1408 (2007) and Stand By Me (Yes I would go THAT far). This is why I greatly prefer Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB because those rating systems are actually accurate. The only reason I am writing this review is because people on here need to know that some movies get the wrong scores, like IT (2017). Anyway, Jack Nicholson just dissolved into the character of psychotic Jack Torrance, and for the life of me, why are people slating Shelley Duvall’s performance? Her clearly traumatised performance was very realistic due to the circumstances her character was in, and I actually kind of preferred this emotionally vulnerable Wendy to the blonde cheerleader archetype that Stephen King created. It makes for a much more interesting dynamic between her, Jack and Danny. King justifies Wendy’s personality in the book as being the kind of person who never went through any struggles, making her experiences at the Overlook Hotel even scarier. But actually, it’s more interesting to think about how it made Stanley Kubrick’s Wendy feel. If she is already traumatised, she must be broken after the experience. Surely seeing Wendy in pieces would be more interesting than watching a former cheerleader shrugging off the experience?… Expand

Another great performance is from Danny Lloyd creating the greatest child acting movie in film history. Unflinchingly directed - There has certainly been a good number of well made and thrilling horror-films in the last thirty years, but few possesses the psychological tension that Stanley Kubrick created in 1980 with his adaptation of StephenUnflinchingly directed - There has certainly been a good number of well made and thrilling horror-films in the last thirty years, but few possesses the psychological tension that Stanley Kubrick created in 1980 with his adaptation of Stephen King`s novel "The Shining" which he wrote with novelist Diane Johnson, that stringently tells the fictional story about writer, husband and father Jack Torrance, who travels from the city with his wife Wendy and son Danny to attend a job interview during the winter at the Overlook Hotel considering an off-season job as a caretaker. Torrance's intension is to use the remote and isolated hotel to find peace while he is writing, but as he get's into his writing his mental state starts to change.

From the majestic and long opening scene where the camera moves transversal through a dead silent landscape and towards the films main location, to the grand finale, this is a throughout captivating and mind-puzzling tale mostly seen through the eyes of a psychic young boy who receives frightening premonitions about the place his parents have brought him to and a grown man who unknowingly is faced with his own mind's evanescence. This increasingly chilling character study uses repeated imagery, shifts from regular to extreme close ups, concentrated, repetitive and no dialog whatsoever, short and long takes and frequently changes from scenes of eerie silence to scenes of climactic noise.This is the type of film such as, without making any comparison, Peter Weir's "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (1975) or David Lynch's "Eraserhead" (1976), where the mood is crucial for the films atmosphere, and in this case the mood is composed by Jack Nicholson's versatile mood-swings and the classic and orchestral music.

Several stories are intersected in "The Shining", and they differ from the story of a writer's block, a horrible tragedy that happened in the past, a wife unable to reach her husband, a son unable to connect with his father and a man's broadening psychosis. It's impossible to overlook Jack Nicholson's electric presence as he transforms into a character that bewilders himself as far as conceivably possible in an oblivious mind. His multi-layered performance stands as a milestone in acting and Nicholson is as frightening as he is entertaining in his nearly exaggerated interpretation. With that said, this film wouldn't be as good as it is without the performances of Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers and Danny Lloyd, who's presence is just as effective as Nicholsons. The ingenious about "The Shining" is that it achieves a high level of tension without being overly violent. Yes, there is a flood of blood, but the greatest horrors of the film is the words, the sounds, the images, the faces, the moods, and how these cinematic elements spark the viewers imagination. This inner an outer mind maze is a vivid examination of supernatural spookiness that truly captures the feeling and perception of fear. Kubrick knew no boundaries as a film maker and his eleventh feature is photographically aesthetic and unflinchingly directed.… Expand

But, I love Nicholson, and I really can't imagine anyone else filling the role of the father. Jack just brings such a powerful, evil, maniacal presence that he (IMO) has claimed that role as his own. The rest of the cast is filler to me. Nicholson's slow fall into madness (or, is it possession? Reincarnation?) builds to a great climax. Jack wielding his axe (which to my understanding is a croquet mallet in the novel, and one of the points of contention by Mr. Stephen King) is one of the best scenes I've ever seen.… Expand

As far as I'm concerned, this will forever be the best horror story ever written for the screen. Incredibly eerie and creepy. I do love the shining, but I find A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and Halloween better than this. The movie's concept is astonishing and Jack is a great villain, but it's not my favorite horror movie.

I remember this movie really upset me when I saw it as a young boy. Because there's nothing more heartbreaking than when families fall apart and then one of the members tries to viciously murder the others with an axe.

Great film very overlooked. For sure worth watching. The errieness of the film is just perfect and the acting is out of this world. This movie holds a strong spot in my horror category.

"The Shining" is a great horror film which, in my opinion, is not as scary or tense as it could have been. There are some parts which largely feel unnecessary (improved in the European version of the film) and there are some scenes where the performances from the actors (excluding Jack Nicholson) could use some improvement. As great as Shelley Duvall was in this movie, I do understand why the director wasn't being a fan of her performance. Not an excuse to stress her out throughout the entire production, but it's still understandable that Kubrick wanted to make the best he could. Danny Lloyd was alright as the young son of Jack Torrance; definitely stood out in some scary scenes.

The direction and cinematography is outstanding in this movie. Every shot is innovative and perfectly framed. The scene where Jack looks at his family from the hotel is possibly one of my favorite shots in "The Shining" (along with the camera following Danny in the hallway). Story-wise, this movie is very weird. From the beginning of the movie, there's something really off about Jack and the relationship he has with his family. When he slowly starts descending into madness, it's very hard to not applaud Nicholson for his performance. In fact, it's my favorite aspect of the movie. The pacing is slow, but the scenes never feel dull or sleep-inducing. It's just a crazy ride from start to finish.

Although not perfect, "The Shining" will definitely fascinate moviegoers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) was one of the greatest horror movies of all time and the greatest horror movie of the 80s. It was based on Stephen King’s 3rd novel with the same name. I cannot believe that Kubrick was nominated for the Worst Director of this movie. That’s just F*cking INSANE! Do professional critics know the pros about this movie? I saw it only got 63 points in Metacritic. This was one of the horror movies that starred a famous star, Jack Nicholson, who won an Oscar for Best Actor in the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975). His performance was one of my favorite Nicholson’s roles. He acted like a villain of the movie even though he wasn’t the main antagonist. Danny Lloyd was one of the greatest child actors to be in a horror film. He had an imagination of a friend, Tony and it was like Tony was real, having a different voice or maybe Tony was realy trying to possess Danny. Then audiences realized that Danny had this Shining power. The surprising thing was Nicholson and Lloyd had the same name of their roles in the movie. How weird! Kubrick was a genius in my opinion. The cinematography was well-shot and it was quite suspenseful. It was really scary, despite having 4 deaths but they were quite bloody. The most terrifying scene was when a lady in the bathtub came to Jack and it turned out she was an old lady, also when the Grady twins said “Come and play with us Danny!”. It was really scary and frightening. The line I liked the most in the movie was “Here’s Johnny!” . I don’t really know who the hell this Johnny was in the movie but I saw the line was iconic and a bit scary. I had been thinking that Torrance was the villain but then I realized that The Overlook Hotel was the main antagonist. It had turned Mr. Grady evil and he killed his wife and 2 daughters. Jack Torrance also had a nightmare of killing Wendy and Danny. The scariest part about that scene was when he said that he chopped his wife into tiny pieces. Torrance’s death was also scary, making it one of the scariest horror movie endings. There was also blood from the elevator. The rooms of the hotel looked large and when I said large means really creepy. The swearings and bad language was useful to make it a good horror movie. I really love the original score. It was just noise but no soundtrack. Many movies copied the score and did it to theirs. Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind were quite creative and a master of making horror movies soundtracks. Nobody thought that noise would also be part of something that scares audiences. I also liked the soundtrack at the beginning of the movie. It was also suspenseful. Finally, Stephen King’s 3rd novel was turned alive in a really good way thanks to Kubrick. He’s a master and The Shining was a horror masterpiece. Everything was scary here. It was one of my favorite horror movies and one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Critics who criticized this movie should regret.

A historia guarda bem seus mistérios e não se preocupa muito em respondê-los. Deixa esse papel com a criatividade do espectador, o que pode fazer com que hajam experiencias bem distintas quanto ao filme - sempre há, mas aqui isso é ainda mais arriscado.… Expand

Not that of horror but great psychological thriller!
Jack Nicholson is tremendous and Danny really stoles the mind and movie yet to reveal the sisters story in doctor sleep makes me hyped alread!237 is damn awesome & redrum at ending too!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a very atmospheric and distinctly chilling film, with an unsettling and somewhat claustrophobic feel to it throughout. There are numerous hints about what's to come from quite early on and it has a somewhat slow plot but I'd say that works in its favour, for this film certainly as it leaves the viewer trying to second guess when things may suddenly 'come to a head', as it were.

Its certainly not an utter gorefest throughout, as horror films go but as you may have guessed, it is very tense at times and I really liked the way the wide-angle camera (pan) shots and the music (quite old fashioned, spooky music certainly, often featuring strings (stringed instruments - it has a Hitchcockian feel to it)) go well together. The cast does a good job, certainly Jack Nicholson as John Torrance and Shelley Duvall as his wife, Wendy. I can understand why this is regarded as a classic horror film, with both of their performances being quite memorable. Wendy's look of sheer terror when things come to a head is quite chilling and certainly memorable, as is Jack's when he embarks on the infamous rampage.

If your a fan of horror films and the like, then I'd definitely recommend this film.… Expand

The film also does well by avoiding typical cinematographic tools of the genre: dark lighting, close-up shots, and fast jump cuts, all of which would play on the viewer's fear of the unknown, claustrophobia and anxiety. However, The Shining manages to provide all of these unnerving sensations in scores, despite doing the exact opposite of the typical horror genre, by portraying the Overlook Hotel as brightly as possible, using wide angle shots throughout the film, and by using long, lingering shots of the environment of the Hotel. Director Stanley Kubrick did a marvelous job of putting the viewers at unease by showing the vast expanses of the Hotel in full lighting, assuring the audience that our protagonists are truly alone in the Hotel - until they are not. He also puts sharp, jarring noises (usually reserved for scenes where the killer is lurking in the dark, or when the monster moves past outside the window) throughout the Shining, even when nothing of significance is happening, further playing on the audience's anxiety and keeping them engaged thinking something could happen at any time - although mostly it doesn't, but it still worked in getting my palms perspiring. The Shining is unique in this sense, that it provides some of the most unnerving cinematic experiences in history, and leaves the viewer absolutely terrified and not able to answer why. For these reasons, The Shining gets a 9/10 from me.… Expand

Jack Nicholson did a great job, as always. They did a fantastic job with the hotel because you can really feel that the characters are alone and that there is something strange with it. It aged perfectly.

Even though Im not really fond of horror movies, no one can't deny how good this is. Every performance is great (obviously Nicholson is on another level) and it has some of the most iconic scenes ever filmed.

The movie is set in Colorado in the late 1970s, though it was shot almost entirely at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England. Ostensibly a haunted house story, it manages to traverse a multifaceted world of incipient madness, spectral murder and supernatural and not to mention, the jump scares. Before plunging ourselves into the depths of the movie, I would like to point out the absolutely marvellous interior sets used in the movie. Unlike the standard issue horror movie, set in a cramped and dimly lit place with erratic scenes and frenzied editing, Kubrick gives us the colossal façade of the Overlook Hotel with brilliantly lit and impeccably clean but empty interiors which in itself gives the viewers the creeps. Every little detail is maintained. The simple sounds used gives the viewers chills down the spine as can be heard when Danny rides his tricycle through the empty corridors of the Hotel, the wheels thundering on the wooden floor, while quiet on the carpet. The slow and gripping pace of the movie leaves many viewers cold, as did the nudge-wink craziness of Jack Nicholson as the author who agrees to take care of an isolated hotel and later, in the worst possible sense, of his own family during a long Colorado winter. But the film's power, like that of its setting, seems to have grown on audiences over the years, and three decades on it still exerts a fearsome grip. It's all in the build-up, Kubrick sets the scene for the horror with meticulous care. By the time things start to go wrong, we feel dreadfully intimate with the sprawling Overlook hotel and the menace hidden along its carpeted corridors and in its luridly coloured bedrooms and bathrooms. But the longer running time does increase the sense, both terrible and exhilarating, of being trapped in Kubrick's magnificent, malevolent nightmare, never to escape. The astute use of tension between the central three characters that just builds and builds to an unforgettable climax. The interior of the Overlook Hotel that becomes a character all on it's own with it's baffling structure, disturbing colour palettes, the minutiae in the design work that make you see things that weren't there before, it's like studying a glorious painting uncovering new layers. The central performances are what make this adaptation so unforgettable. Jack Nicholson is at his raw acting best. There's a sense of enervation and irritability behind those wild eyes, you know he's already too far gone by the time they arrive, but his gradual descent into madness is truly horrifying. Shelly Duvall who almost went crazy herself during the film's gruelling and notoriously hostile production, Kubrick’s mistreatment of Duvall elevated her acting and she does a wondrous job, capturing the vulnerability and desperation of the overprotective mother Wendy Torrence. Danny Lloyd who never acted again after this gave the world of cinema, one of the best child performances. Kubrick knew exactly what he was doing and what he wanted. Though it did get stressful at times with him, they all did an exceptional job in making the movie, a chef-d'oeuvre.… Expand
