For a drama/comedy movie it's really good with a screenplay that is fairly unique for this genres ramifications. Visually stunning with memorable scenes and a fitting soundtrack to go along with it. Overall a very pleasant watch.

To say this is a 'remake' is definitely an injustice. The 1947 version had Danny Kaye singing making those faces (make a 'face' and all of a sudden you are an American 'comedian'), and singing happy-go-lucky tunes. I would suggest this version was more akin to something David Lean might offer in terms of cinematography: including the landscape as one of the movie's central characters. For me, the story held up well enough on it's own without being too sugary.

What I took from it was that this story could apply to most people who, on a whim, step away from their comfortable lives and end up doing something they would consider a 'leap into the unknown'. The boarding scene along the empty road struck a chord with me; heading to a destination one hasn't been to, or even heard of, following a tiny thread that leads to...?

I would consider it among Mr. Stiller's best work.

It is, I suppose, something of a life affirming type movie, although it isn't completely slushy, there's the obligatory love interest and indeed an amusing unlikely friendship that blossoms between Walter and a man who works for eHarmony who phones him, which reminds me of at least one plot hole present in the movie - the fact that he supposedly manages to pick up phone calls from Los Angeles on the top of mountains in foreign countries is ever so slightly far fetched but then this is a movie about someone who ends up doing rather far fetched things and who has, certainly previously, let his far fetched imagine get the better of him, so it'd be a bit ironic to note it down for the lack of realism or believability somehow.

I thought there were some nice, quirky characters in the movie (and one clear villainous character who its hard not to want to goo and hiss at when he's on screen!) - apart from the main character, Walter, another example of a memorable character would be a rather drunk, large macho pub karaoke singer that he comes in contact with in Greenland and eventually, against his better judgement, joins for one part of the adventure, with interesting consequences, put it that way!.

Pace wise, I liked that this movie wasn't too fast and furious or 'in your face', the plot develops at a fairly slow pace but there's plenty to keep us entertained in the meantime and I never felt it had become dull and boring. As far as categorising it is concerned, genre-wise, its certainly not a straight action/adventure movie, or not of the usual type anyway, its insular to the character of Walter himself of course, all about his life and realisation of his need to broaden his horizons and make something of himself in his fairly mundane city surroundings, for the most part. As I say its quite a sentimental movie a, its quite sort of uplifting and poignant in parts - I think people who are similar to the main character should be able to relate to him quite easily and I mainly say that because I felt I could certainly relate to him, with my daydreams and sometimes seeming to have not much to say to my name, which isn't entirely true but I suppose I have lived a fairly modest life, I keep to myself and anyway I felt it was easy to relate to and cheer for this character. I guess if you have to categorise it using the few common genres, I'd say this is maybe more of a slow-ish drama.

Overall, I felt it was certainly quite diverting and I particularly liked the scenes where he drifted off into another daydream, when the fantasy type elements come out, that was fun to watch. As I've already hinted at, there are the almost inevitable plot holes in a movie like this, although it didn't spoil my enjoyment of it. I felt the characters and the CGI used but not over-used, thankfully, helped to make this what I thought was quite a heartwarming and at times, touching movie.

Cast wise, it has to be said that I think Ben Stiller was a particularly good actor to portray Walter, as he does very well (although its nothing new for him, as he's played similar types of characters in the past) in convincingly playing the underdog, a laidback, somewhat affable guy who would be easily over looked on the streets. It may also be worth pointing out that Ben Stiller also directed this movie as well as starring as the main character within it. Kristen Wiig plays Walter's love interest, Cheryl Melhoff, who comes across very much as an every day sort of girl, a nice enough character and indeed it'd be hard not to want them to get together, although I won't be spoiling the movie by saying whether anything happens or not. Its not really a romantic movie as such, its just a sub-plot within the over film. Shirley MacLaine also appears as Walter's cheery mother, Edna.

Content wise, well, this movie carries a PG rating, so clearly there isn't much likely to offend people. I can't really think of anything specifically to mention here, if there's anything likely to offen, it'd perhaps be a sense of it being maybe a bit too over sentimental and schmalt-zy. I was quite impressed with the aerial shots of the foreign landscapes - there's some quite good cinematography present.

There's some good dialogue, some is probably unncessary but some is quite poignant. There are some funny moments too as well as some quite touching moments, with the inclusion of some quotes which appear supposedly written across building walls and in random places, what's said in the quote being acted out in the scenes to a degree, as its quite a sort of symbolic movie I suppose.

Yes I'd recommend this, as I felt it was quite a heart warming, sentimental movie that I felt I could relate to. Its probably not for everyone but if it appeals to you then you shouldn't be disappointed, as it has some good characters and a decent cast.

First off, theThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty is alright. Funny, enchanting, and impeccably shot, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an incredibly feel good film that hits some really good highs, but waters them down with major problems. First off, the writing is solid. Though the characters other than Walter Mitty suck, Mitty's arc is well done and since the film is about him, this fact makes sense. A journey of self-discovery, the film really makes you want to get up and go travel, which speaks to its impact it can have on a viewer. Additionally, the cinematography is very good and really soaks up the beauty of its idyllic shooting locations. However, on the flip side, the film can fall flat at times. In particular, it hits the brakes whenever Mitty has a dream sequence with those moments being outlandish, weird, and unnecessary. Overall, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a sweet ode to life itself and those who go unnoticed, but is not nearly as successful at its premise as it should have been. Expand

What 'The Truman Show' (1998) was for JimI remember seeing the trailer for this movie during the winter of 2013, and I even saw it on the first day thinking that maybe Ben Stiller is taking himself seriously as an actor and a director. What 'The Truman Show' (1998) was for Jim Carrey, or what 'Forrest Gump' (1994) was for Tom Hanks, this could be it for Ben Stiller.

Despite that amazing trailer, which did get me excited for this movie, I was underwhelmed when I first saw it.

I will say this, Stiller did an amazing job directing this story, the landscapes and everything was absolutely incredible, the story is a good story about a nobody guy who day-dreams and wants to become more than what he is. This is everything I look for when I go to the movies, I like stories of a person who is a nobody but then gets up one day and becomes more than what people give them credit for.

The reason I was underwhelmed with this movie was mostly because the tone was very unbalanced and inconsistent at times, one minute, it's the kind of movie that gives you goosebumps, the next minute, it becomes a little bit too silly for its own good.

I still liked this movie enough to give it a 6/10 rating, but if the trailers amazed you...the movie won't be able to do that. It's ambitious, but all that ambition fades away as the run time goes on.

The more times I watch the movie and think of it, the more I appreciate the film for what it does. Ben Stiller delivers a painfully awkward performance that absolutely matches the heart of his character, Walter Mitty, an aloof negative assets manager at LIFE magazine who believes in what he does. The acting was absolutely solid, and the movie had many throwback moments from the not so subtle image choices to the fitting music.

The subtle greatness of the movie can be easily missed for those who are looking for funnier jokes, slapstick comedy, gushy romantic scenes, and mind boggling plot twists. I hate making comparisons, but the film has a very strong Forrest Gump undertone: the misunderstood/eccentric protagonist who doesn't just undertake a journey in life, but makes life a journey. Though it doesn't have the same grand scheme of Gump, it certainly has precious moments that give you a minute to ponder upon your own life and how you could live in the now, or as the young call it: YOLO.

Kristen Wiig also does an amazing job as the love interest, Cheryl Melhoff.

So in short, watch the movie. Form your own opinion outside of some of the terrible critic reviews. Remember the times you used to imagine in life, and let the film motivate you.

The movie isn't flawless by any means, a little uneven at times and perhaps a bit more for material for Sean Penn (I mean it's Sean Penn, use him right?), but the exceptional cinematography, that wonderful touch of fantasy, a fantastic soundtrack are just some of the standouts of this charming comedy/drama.

The second being, apparently, that I may be a Walter Mitty type. Oxford defines Walter Mitty as "Used to refer to a person who fantasizes about a life much more exciting and glamorous than their own life". I guess you could say that we are all Walter Mitty types. Who doesn't sit around and wonder how exciting it would be to do something other than sitting around. I spent the first part of this movie fantasizing. I was bored and imagined some place that would hold much more interest. That boredom did dissipate by the time we caught up with Sean O'Connell, played by Sean Penn. His talk about savoring a moment resonated with myself. The idea that you should enjoy the moment and breath it in. There is so many things in this world that we should be experiencing. Lately, I feel like I should be breathing in every single moment. Whether it be studying the colour of a beer or hearing you son speak of his new found interest in politics, every moment should be cherished. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. More than other films, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" fractures the audience. Split along the dividing line between cynicism and idealism, one camp finds a sweet treat celebrating the underdog while the other chokes on treacle.

Armed with a terrific script penned by Steven Conrad, star and Director Ben Stiller proves his mettle in front of and behind the camera. His Mitty is an everyman sacrificing all for family; the flights of fancy an escape from a life lived in quiet desperation. Set upon a quest to find an important film negative, Mitty surpasses fantasy, finds the negative and wins the girl. It's pure hokum, yet surprisingly uplifting. Risking oxymoron, though steeped in fantasy "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is unerringly real.

The film also peddles the notion our increasingly wired world, where it's not real unless posted on Facebook, is fallacious and dangerous in that human connection to the world and each other is becoming the fantasy. Think of sightseers sequestered behind iPads and smart phones snapping away in lieu of directly experiencing the marvels before them. Or the story of a man beaten by several others on a subway platform where none of the bystanders stepped up or called 911 but did record the scene on their mobile devices.

Best expressed by the object of Mitty's search, photographer Sean O'Connell (a fine Sean Penn) is poised to take a spectacular snap of the elusive Snow Leopard, balks and states (paraphrasing), "Sometimes I don't take it. I just like to be in the moment." A concept drowning in contemporary life built on instantaneous gratification. (The difference between the immediacy of digital photography and traditional which requires time, patience and a swim in smelly, carefully prepared chemicals.)

"To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life." This cinematic "Life" magazine motto - the film's theme - infers the adventurous spirit, curiosity and purposefulness require resuscitation. Absent the phony, wise guy RomCom dialogue used in most of the ilk, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," quietly celebrates the human spirit like no other film in recent memory. And there is nary a cynical frame in it.

Kristen Wiig is understated and quite appealing. In an unforgettable scene, Walter fantasizes she takes the stage in Nuuk, Greenland to dedicate a rendition of Bowie's "Space Oddity" to him. The ballad rouses Walter to board a helicopter and, hanging on for dear life, continue the quest. Later, while pedaling in hot pursuit of Sean O'Connell, a large flock of birds creates Wiig's likeness. It's an amazing image (as is the cinematography of Iceland and British Columbia).

Adam Scott's corporate raider is a bit broad and one dimensional. Shirley MacLaine is fine as Edna Mitty; a sweet, pie-baking Mom direct from the cover of "The Saturday Evening Post."

If fault is to be found it is in overt product placement that is counter to the film's tone. In defense, the Papa Johns tie-in is motivated unlike Fedex trucks prowling streets in many films. But the inclusion of Patton Oswalt as an E-Harmony rep is an unnecessary distraction.

Not unlike any other romantic comedy, this is a film of standard movie plot points and complications. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" soars in its heartfelt, assured and gentle execution. Given its definitive slant, your mileage may vary.

I especially liked the scenes in Greenland (when was the last time Greenland was in a major film?) and Iceland. The missing negative was an effective narrative device that kept my interest during the whole film. Mitty's daydreams were too frequent and predictable (and did he always have to make the audience share the dream?), the sparring with the evil transition manager also overdone. The movie dragged a bit in the last quarter. But I liked its message of pursuing your dreams - it was effective and thought-provoking. Heartfelt too. Expand

The Good: Fantastic characterization. It is very easy to root for Walter as he seems very human and is someone we can all relate to on some level. Walter's daydreams are both poignant and amusing. I found myself wanting to see more of them. The chemistry between Stiller and Wiig was obvious and the film makes you truly want our hero to get the girl. After a massive buildup, I was concerned that they payoff just wouldn't be there, but I was satisfied and it was worth the wait.

The Bad: Eventually, Walter's daydreams become less frequent and you can't help but miss them. At times, and especially early on, Walter is almost a little TOO quirky.

Sorry, but the product placement was so blatant it ruined the illusion of the story. Let's face it, unless your making a documentary all filmmaking is based on creating good illusions, like a talented magician! When a particular fast food company that serves gross food infects a story - like a flu virus - it wrecks the fantasy created by the filmmakers! James Thurber would be spinning in his grave!

Such product placement is totally unnecessary unless the producers of the film felt The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was going to be a big flop. Or, those making the film want to squeeze every last cent they can to make money by treating filmmaking like a commodity, such as toothpaste or underarm deodorant! Hey, that's a great idea, since we get to know over and over again Walter Mitty's favorite crappy fast food restaurant, why not let us know what his favorite toothpaste and underarm deodorant are, too?!! And why stop there? Let's find out his favorite type of paper towel, toilet paper, laundry detergent, car, soda, vodka, beer and on and on. I even have a new idea for a title: "The Secret Product Placement Life of Walter Mitty."

I didn't pay $11.50 for a ticket and another $6.50 for popcorn to repeatedly watch and hear the characters talk about commercial products in the middle of a movie. The product placement in this film was not subtle and I didn't appreciate being forced to watch such nonsense!

It's really sad filmmaking has stooped so incredibly low and that the film-going public tolerates this crap! Wow!

If you are not familiar with the original story you will probably enjoy this film a lot and think it’s a great feel good movie and be baffled as to why others didn’t like it. If you have read the short story you will probably find the film hard to get into as while it is visually great and there is some good cinematography the film deviates a lot from the source material while trying to take a simple short story and expand it into a 2 hour movie. If you are one of those people’s whose read the original story then you might want to cleanse your mind of it if you want to enjoy the cute little film. For me I’m in the middle on one end this film is entertaining and I was engaged but at the same time it was nagging at me that this was deviating and at times betraying the original story. I guess at the end of the day its more good than bad but at the same time it is kind of annoying to once again see Hollywood take a wonderful story and make it into something eh. Expand

Pros:
Great Cinematography. The movie looked gorgeous.
Amazing Score. Every song fit the movie's story.
Ben Stiller. He showed how diverse of an actor he is.

Cons:
Not loyal to the original story. While it had elements it did not focus on it.
The Story. The story was great at first, but towards the end of the movie it just seemed to drag on with Mitty meeting Shaun and finding the negative.

Overall I enjoyed the movie very much, despite it dragging at the end.

It's enjoyably off kilter, ambitious, and decently uplifting. The visual effects are solid, often helping to create some impressive and funny scenes. That being said, the presentation of the movie sometimes feels overly commercialized, and something about the film feels too airy and weightless. I'd still say however, that if you walk away from this movie not feeling somewhat inspired, or at least happy, that you're being way too cynical. It was too resonant and atmospheric to leave me disappointed. Expand

It had all of the pieces in place to be one of those great movies that combine a certain innocent charm with insight and introspection to deliver a heartfelt and emotional movie that anyone can relate to. However, instead of putting that all together in a fashion that feels genuine, like The Truman Show for example, it just feels like it's missing something. Ben Stiller is great and Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, and Patton Oswalt (among others) do a great job in their supporting roles, albeit far shorter than they should've been. I think the big problem was Adam Scott's character. People like that are so seldom they almost don't even exist and this movie hinging on his "bullying" made it tough to relate to. I don't mind that the pace was slow either. I expected that. I didn't expect for the film to build to a moment of revelation only to end abruptly and without much to hang your hat on, so to speak. Having never done much of note in his life Mitty spends most of his life daydreaming, often about ways to impress co-worker Cheryl (Wiig). When a photograph, needed for Life's final cover, goes missing Mitty sets out on an adventure that takes in Greenland, Iceland and Afghanistan.

Ben Stiller is unusually restrained in the lead role but puts in a superb performance as the socially awkward Mitty and the supporting cast are equally as well cast. The cinematography is stunning and, whilst the pacing is perhaps a little uneven at times, it rarely detracts from Mitty's feel good journey.

You'd have to have a heart of stone not to be touched by this movie.

But no one ever used better than himself in his own directions. Yes, most of his great performances and movies came under his steering of the ship. This is the one more movie where he exposed his creativity in filmmaking as well as acting.

'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' was anticipated to be one of an Oscar node for the 86th ceremonial season, but failed unexpectedly. That did not stop the movie to the viewers to enchant with its beautiful contents. The movie was shot in many exotic places around the world, especially the sub-arctic countries like Greenland, Iceland et cetera are so alluring. According to the story the movie won't stick to the same location for more than 15-20 minutes. The constant change of places played a vital role in the movie's successive cinematographic presentation.

It was a refreshing movie compared to the movies that released in the same year. In everything, from the distinct characters to the places it takes place to the technical parts. Those places as they say were not exactly the same. Most of them were shot in a studio and the rest were the magic of special effects.

Like I always say critics are a bad influence for creative movie like this. This movie was thrashed by them, but movie fanatics are the one who stood by the side so I am happy to be one and I loved this movie. This movie was based on the short story of the same name that was published in a magazine in 1939 and was second movie adaptation after the 1947 version. If you are looking for a variety in a movie well here it is.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is much more than one would expect with a strong dose of sensibility from Stiller and a tactic refusal to use comedy as a recovery tool as so many movies do today.

Stiller shows a wide range of acting chops in Life which, at the end of the day, raise this romantic comedy drama adventure to heights it would otherwise have missed. One of the better movies of the year and deserving of a much greater Metacritic score than the analytical critics have seen fit to deliver.

Half drama half comedy, its a pleasant movie that I won't ever watch again.

Everything looks ok in this movie, but nothing is great. It explores well the conformism of people, has great scenarios, acting is fine, drama is ok, comedy is below what I hoped for, not really a movie to make you laugh, more like a drama to watch with a smile in your face.

My negative criticism goes to the particularity of the main character, which feels like it serves no purpose whatsoever in the movie, other than to make the character uniquely weird. It could have focused more on that and make some twists with it.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is about overcoming trials. It's easy to daydream about fantastic solutions, but you'll never grow up and overcome them unless you get out there to face the things that haunt you. I really felt that this movie highlighted it much better than the older version.

The movie has a very subtle hint of humor. It took me a moment to follow along with the script, but by the middle of the movie, I was laughing and really mentally interacting with Walter's story. Ben Stiller is normally not one of my favorites, but this was really one of his better jobs. The critics are just a little over critical of it. It's a good pick-me-up movie for anyone facing life's challenges, and I actually left a little inspired.

The biggest problem is that none of the characters act in a way that any relatable human being would, which culminates in a near end twist that really took me out of the movie. The parts that are clever or heartwarming come at the expense of being a paint-by-numbers cliche. The dialogue comes off as very awkward, which is intentional, but not the awkward that lends itself to good writing that someone like Joss Whedon can produce. I am sure that I will appreciate the message and the intent behind it, but I was too frustrated and bored to enjoy watching it. Expand

The actors are amazing, the places beautiful, the story overwhelming.

The movie has the basic ingredients to get pulled in: it has some wit, characters to hate, characters to love, a silly story but with a good message. Some nice jokes that everyone may appreciate.
For me, this was a very nice feel good movie, and I would definitely recommend it.

I am very happy for Ben Stiller at the moment. The Secret Life ofI am very happy for Ben Stiller at the moment. He has finally been daring enough to venture out of the brainless teen comedy zone which he has been stuck in for the past few decades and made a very entertaining movie. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty in my opinion should not be described as a family movie. Not because it isn't fun, because I expect adults will actually prefer it to children. This is probably down to the much more sophisticated type of humor used to get the laughs than in Stillers previous movies (basically the Focker movies). I have to admit the style to the whole film varies in places. For example it goes from being a quite funny and sweet to being downright creepy and forced. If you have seen it already you will understand that I am of course talking about the Benjamin Button scene. However this is not what you would call a major flaw and I found most of it to be harmlessly enjoyable. The funniest moment was undoubtedly how Walter deals with the aggressively unlikable character firing half of the people in Walter's company. Kristen Wiig (who I usually find irritating) singing Space Oddity to inspire Walter to get off his ass, is also a brilliant scene. Not perfect, but satisfying by way of laughs and worth watching. Stiller has finally made an intelligent comedy. Expand

But when I think of one of the many overall messages in this movie, I start to think, (spoiler, kinda) maybe this movie isn't meant to get tons of good reviews, maybe this movie should mainly be enjoyed for what it is, not a movie that stands tall among the towering blockbusters of today, but a movie that takes the "simple story" route with a touch of insanely creative, and random, outbursts of energy. However, with such effort put into this story, I don't think a 54 is good enough for what I see as enjoyable movie. One thing is for sure, I don't think this movie was too similar to the original, and I don't think it should be compared to the original. But with an interesting story where for once, someone is defending the things that are slowly dying in our country, like magazines, film rolls, and just getting out and doing things just for personal gain, not to show off, I believe this film deserves more credit. At times, mainly during Mitty's sudden fantasies, this film reminded me of one of my most favorite movies Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I myself am a fan of extreme stylized transitions and visual effects, and these effects helped push along Walter Mitty's tale. Also, my being dyslexic was another reason I enjoyed this film. I, overall, would give this movie a 9, but seeing as many have given it much less, I will go with a 10 Expand

Looked at from a distance,The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is not a film for those looking for an all-encompassing intricate plot. It is a film that many have criticized for over-reaching, but I feel that the film does not over-reach at all. Looked at from a distance, the plot is rather simple, and the real joy of the movie comes from Mitty's personality and his journey to overcome the fun (to watch) but ultimately detrimental daydreams that he experiences. It is a movie that carries emotion rarely found in many of today's typical 'Oscar pieces', and I found myself with tears of joy and sorrow in my eyes many times. Do not expect this movie to be an amazing revelation, because you will be disappointed. It is simply one very joyful, and ultimately very uplifting film that is a pleasure to watch, with fantastic screenplay and a sterling soundtrack to match. Ben Stiller has given himself a role very different to those he has tried before, and this is the first time I have been able to appreciate his acting in a character that suits him. What this movie really is at the end of the day, is a strong and well rounded experience that is well worth the price of a ticket and two hours. It is not to be missed, and the message of the film is hard to forget. For all the cynics, critics and crises of the world, life can be everything you want it to be. Expand

It talks about how to have a life, not literally if you know what i mean, to chase everything what life has to offer to us. When we're bored in our life we kind of chase or try to change our life style but at the end you're just chasing after yourself. You just have to face what is life really does offer you. This movie really moved me not just because the protagonist worked in a magazine company, maybe that is my dream, but because the simplicity of this movie makes me want more and think about my life or our life. All in all i really loved everything about it. The casting is perfect and Ben Stiller is such a promising actor and director. Expand

I expected so more...
They didn't know how to take care of such a rich story. The movie lost the chance to be a lot much better.
The actors were poor on their performance. Such story should not be a comedy movie.

The secret Life of Walter Mitty was clearly a movie that Ben stiller really wanted to make. It is the story of a middle age man who has done nothing with his life, who suddenly has an adventure thrust upon him. This movie is far from perfect but if you are able to overlook some of the more silly parts of the movie, e.g. a scenes where Walter has an all-out fight with one of the bearded pricks in the movie over a Stretch Armstrong doll then you should be fine. Finally a simple movie with a good moral that takes the viewer on a visual adventure.

Not a deep storyline, not a movie that will blow your mind, but a good story, a beautiful picture, and a film that won't leave you disappointed.
