It is clear that a lot of effort was put in it. Also, I have no problems with DiCaprio's acting, but the movie's writing and execution was everything that can be wrong. Suspension of disbelief is challenged as the protagonist survives what should be impossible. Ridiculous scenes that will make you laugh are all over the place, just as purposeless violence. This movie has zero creativity put on it. Again, DiCaprio wasn't the problem here, but he was a victim of a poorly written movie. No matter how good the actors were, the story was so bad and cliche I simply couldn't stop thinking how I don't care what happens to these people.
Overall, I wish I could get the time I spent watching this movie back.

Unbelievably gripping tale of survival, betrayal and ingenuity. The violence managed to be both disturbing and completely natural at the same time. One of the few movies that can pull off more than 150 minutes without even seeming long.

Predictable and too many leaks in the Script!.
Why two men only chase one guy when they have tens of people ready to fight?
Last fight scene should be dramatic or hilarious?
Wonderful Acting, Sound and Cinematography.

I really disliked this movie.

Stylistically, the long sweeping shots of scenic vistas without dialog are aesthetically pleasing, but style cannot substitute for lack of story. By the 90-minute mark, I was done with it. Sadly, it went on for another hour.

This flaw in pacing was not helped by the absolutely terrible score. It's clear there was a deliberate choice to go minimalistic, but it just didn't work. If you're going to make a two and-a-half hour movie that's anchored by long shots without dialog, the least you can do is help the audience feel like things are moving along by putting some excitement into the music.

The way it's directed and edited, every single character for whom the audience starts to feel sympathy soon gets killed, and always through no fault of their own. It's as if the director delights in repeated fatalistic displays of the world's moral failings. After the first hour, I was so depressed I wanted to shoot myself.

And in the end, what is it about? Getting from point A to point B without getting killed in order to exact revenge? The payoff was in no way worth the investment of time, emotion and boredom. If I had seen this in the theater, I would have walked out.

Also, if you're an animal lover, do yourself a favor and do *not* see this movie. No fewer than five large mammals are killed on screen, and none in self-defense.

Because I enjoyed some of the cinematography and performances, I'll give it a 2/10. Otherwise, it would have been a 1.

While the opening was interesting, and the first half-hour gave us an incredibly visceral war scene that is frankly a piece of art in and of itself; the rest of the film was just torture-porn of the worst kind. Leonardo DiCaprio did a good job here but that's not enough to save this film. The films plot can be summarised as, "nature beats up Leonardo DiCaprio for two hours while he's near death after he gets mauled by an unrealistic looking CGI bear". This is pretty much the only key event in the film and the rest is just a long drawn out torture scene as we watch poor Leo grimace and strain at the camera for hours. It's almost painful to watch and not because you're sympathising with the character, but because you're not interested in watching someone languish in pain for yet another run-on scene. Honestly, I would question the emotional stability of those who enjoy this, as I feel it would take some pretty entrenched sadism to get pleasure out of watching this. Expand

Alejandro González Iñárritu has proved that he is not a one hit wonder with this movie. The cinematography is the best I’ve seen all year with great single shots instead of cutting scenes. The natural lightning used in the movie was just beautiful to look at and made the movie viewing experience great. Leonardo DiCaprio‘s performance in this movie hands down the best performance of the year and his career. If he doesn’t win the Oscar then no one will. The other performances were great. I was really fascinated with the gore aspect of this movie it felt more realistic than any other R-rated movie. The score of the movie is brilliant. The only issue I have with the movie was that it’s a slow paced movie and I’d have loved to see more of Hugh Glass’ backstory.
In the end The Revenant is one of the best movies of this year. I recommend everyone to watch this movie just for Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance .

It's SO GORGEOUS, sure the film has it's other strong suits but the direction (Inarittu) and cinematography (Lubezki), two categories it won Oscars in, is so overwhelming I couldn't understand why a certain section of the audience did not find this a good watch. It is a very old school film it has this strong 70's vibe where the story is not told and is left for you to figure out. I watched this with a friend who did not enjoy this as much and suggested that the movie would have been better if DiCaprio's character Hugh Glass narrated in the film and spelled out his ordeals to the audience. I called my friend a pleb because I am a high and mighty jerk like that but on a serious note while a narration would have helped with the casual audience, it would also promote spoon feeding hand holding which has become the norm of today's films. The performances were great and a movie like this falls apart if the performances are not good they are the only thing connecting the audience to the film. Well deserved Oscar for DiCaprio, arguably career best performance from him, Tom Hardy was great too shame no Oscar though, some scenes were so intense I could feel it taking a mental toll on me of which the bear mauling scene was on the forefront. Overall a very visceral movie which used only natural light while filming and will stand the test of time, something which this year's winner Spotlight cannot claim. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel the movie is really overrated. The story is nothing new, you have seen this story probably a million times:

A guy who loses everything, but his drive for revenge keeps him alive until he gets his revenge.

Pros
-Leonardo DiCaprio acting is really good.
- The photography is really good.

Cons
- The story is nothing new
- There is no realism in this movie what so over, Leonardo DiCaprios character seems like an immortal auto healing god. And everyone else extremely fragile. Except of course the guy he is chasing. I’m going in more detail here. This a movie about a man that after surviving the native attack, gets attack by bear, and bear beats the living **** out of him, he in fact scars him in the neck, and after all the fight the bear end up on top of him. But he doesn’t die. He then sees how someone kills his son and just can scream, but hours after they leave him to die, he crawls out of the hole he was in, and after two days is walking. But not just that he NEVER takes any form of antibiotic, or takes time to clean his injuries, he jumps off a cliff with a horse, survives an assault with like 30 Indians on horse on his back in an open area. Sleeps naked inside a horse. Eats only raw food. Swims inside a near frozen river with waterfalls fully clothed. And then gets out roll over and don´t die from hypothermia and of course has no problem swimming while they are shooting arrows at him. No matter what happens after he sleeps he will always wake up.

Not even Bear Grills make it look that easy. And in a film where you are going to be sited for 2 and half hours with something like this recurring you start losing interest really soon, because he could get another wound, but it doesn’t matter he will just keep going.

- This movie has no humanity, morality or good. No matter where you search all the characters that are human get killed really fast. The movie is the story of how different groups never really found peace, they just worked the whole movie to ruin each other’s life.
- There is no character development what so ever.
- The movie has no ending message, no moral, nothing is just a blood bath

So here is my advice if you want to see it. Put a mark of 30 minutes, if you are able to pass all the stuff and not be bothered by it, you’ll enjoy it. If you really care about this stuff then save yourself the time. I want to add I’m Mexican, and since the director is Mexican I really wanted to like it that why I kept going. It was a mistake. And finally I see a lot of users praising how real the movie is, and the realism of it. So for the users believing in that my advice is a bit less Hollywood, because clearly you have no idea what you are talking about.

Note: reasonable spoiler, not much you won't know if you've seen the trailer.

What a disappointment!

First I'm a big fan of that kind of period piece, I'm a fan of the historical, I quite like Inarratu, I don't think Leo is the best thing since sliced bread but I generally like him ok.
So here comes "the Revenant", great photography, all filmed in location, in natural light, with attention to details and historicity (they consulted some figure), talented director, lead actor that can act. All the stars seem aligned and that's probably what most critic though considering the overwhelmingly positive reception.

And yet, somehow, this didn't quite click for me.

First the good: photography is manificient, movie is filmed in location, in natural light, and it shows. The environnment is manificient. Picture has grain. There's grit, it's almost palpable. In this era of CGI BS it is really a benediction to see that kind of filming. It really, really is the best part of the movie, and if only for that you should see this movie, and see it again. I repeat, go see it twice.
Now, what doesn't quite work: anything else. When you put so much effort in filming "real" picture why spoil it with such an artificial script. I'm not sure if I don't like the movie because it is not the movie I wanted to see or because it really is not great.

The script really is not all that bad. Problem is such formidable filming needed a extraordinary script while what we are being given is quite pedestrian. When you got gritty visual, you'd expect true to life long, slow-paced and intense nature journey. Unfortunately this is all expedited pretty quickly. It seems the woods are full of people, trappers, indians, apparently you can't hike (or crawl) a mile without running into someone. There are guns everywhere, people shoot in every direction. The movie would qualify better as a western than as the introspective journey it is sold as.

While the movie prides itself (with reasons) for its filming it is also riddled with unnecessary CGI, and I am not even talking about the titular bear everyone has heard of. There are many dream of action sequences you could really do without. Just simplicity, no need to overload every aspect of the movie.

Which leads us to final part: the script. Maybe it's weird but I somehow found myself rooting for the bad guy (Tom Hardy's character). The first scenes of the movie quickly establish that the characters are living in an era where human life is clearly expandable, where people live miserably and then die brutally for no good reason. So people get casually killed, and then Leo get mauled and all the sudden it becomes like everyone is suddenly living by the motto "leave no one behind" and Leo is treated like he is some royalty. And then when Hardy's character decides he'll just get rid of dying Leo, which seems like a fairly reasonable decision for people who are themselves in pretty dire situation, it is treated like the most evil decision ever. This is where the movie started falling apart for me, while the movie seemed focused on being authentic it suddenly tried to artificially tack on modern morals to a gritty period piece. The movie has a choice between a fantasy character that lives by anachronical moral code and a realistic one that will do what humans do to survive... and it chooses the wrong one.

(Note: and before you tell me this is based on a true story, the only thing true is that the real Glass got abandoned and buried and somehow got back to civilisation by himself, but all the details available are pretty sketchy and romanticized).

And boy does the movie want you to feel this way, in case you might think Fitz (Hardy's character) is acting reasonably, the movie makes sure you think he is evil: he is racist, greedy, vulgar, he even is from Texas. And he kills Leo's son for odd reasons, so he definitely is unredeemable. Ok script, why not, but really isn't that a little cheap, couldn't things be a little more blurry. In the end ***Minor spoiler*** while Leo finally gets the upper hand on Hardy, he just utters "You came all this way just for your revenge, huh? Did you enjoy it?" and it really rung right to me, but than catching this thread Leo, and the movie, just treat it as some last moustache twirling taunt and just backhand dismiss it. ***/ spoiler end***

Long story short, the movie promote authenticity through cinematography and authentic locations everything else is heavy-handed and fake as sh*t.

Bonus round: also, in real life:
* Glass did get attacked by a bear
* His hunting party left two guy to bury him after he died
* They left him for dead in a shallow grave
* He didn't have a son so they couldn't kill it
* Glass forgave those that abandoned him
* It all happened in summer

-work in progress- might complete/tidy up later

The lack of dialogue is also a nuanced plot device used to establish an unspoken maxim: The bad guys talk more than the good guys. Tom Hardy makes an excellent bad guy, but the dialogue he has been given (God as a squirrel) sometimes just doesn’t work very well, and maybe it’s for the best that there isn’t more of it.

The season of the film is winter, and the sun rarely shines on any of the majestic background shots. The weather is not the only thing that is bleak. Set in the American frontier, the movie is a vivid reminder not only of the devastation that early hunters/trappers wreaked on wildlife and the Native American way of life, but the brutality that frontiersmen and Native American Indians visited on each other.

Except for the scene in which DiCaprio is attacked by a bear, the story - written by director Alejandro Inarritu (Birdman) - fails to captivate. DiCaprio’s relentless desire for vengeance and his never-ending struggle to survive weigh heavily on the film’s mood. Overlay a portrayal of frontier life as totally joyless for all who live and things get downright depressing. Top it all off with a “mixed-result” ending, and a lengthy run-time of 2hrs 45 mins and you have a movie that’s a bit of a grind.

The first hour of the revenant is very good with one of the best scenes in a movie this year but by the second hour it becomes a drag. Great cinematography and strong performance by Dicaprio help push the film for its nearly 3 hour length.

I couldn't take my eyes off this movie. All the hellish conditions undergone by the cast and crew while shooting in sequential order and using only natural lighting really paid off with one of the most harrowing cinematic experiences ever (as far as I'm concerned). Though some of the wide-angle shots remind you that you're watching a film, the emphasis on realism is absolutely transporting. Some of the best action scenes are shot entirely with one take as well which adds to their immediacy. The performances by DiCaprio and Hardy are top-notch and both truly disappear into their roles. Can't recommend this enough. Lubezki's cinematography... it must have been such hell getting some of those shots. This is Inarritu's best work by far, beating out the gimmicky "Birdman" and the visionary but depressing "Babel". A true gem of cinema and easily among the top 3 films of 2015. Go see it in the best theater possible!! Expand

The Revenant - Review (no spoilers)
By the time the movie ended, I developed a few wrinkles myself along with Leonardo. What starts off as a gripping and grueling arrow versus gun powerball set in the 17th century amidst the beautiful Rockies, quickly turns into a quiet boring documentary about the flora, fauna and the lifestyle of ancient winter survivors. Interspersed somewhere there is a rather juvenile story-line of father avenging the son's death. Usually it is the other way around, but DiCaprio is too old to play someone's son now. Anyway, it's day, then night, then day, then night. Then flesh. Then blood. Then day. Then night. Terrific nat-geo level cinematography though. In the end, the director takes on a challenge of how to gross out the already irritated and tired audience. Well, guess how? More flesh. More blood. Finally the ordeal ends. DiCaprio deserves an Oscar, but not for this movie. Just like Rahman deserved an Oscar for Roja rather than Jai-Ho.

The biggest positives are the amazing cinematography, and acting by Leo, Hardy and others. Leo will probably get an Oscar for his performance. There are several very memorable and moving scenes, particularly during the first 60 minutes. The CGI bear scene was very well done. Also, the movie has the "feel" of being historically accurate.

The negatives have been well covered by the professional critics for the most part. The movie seems to try too hard to hit an emotional pitch, but kinda falls flat. There are too many flashback scenes and long (albeit beautiful) shots that never really do what they intend to do. The plot was a bit predictable, and I found the end to be a unsatisfying overall.

The fine performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Dohmnall Gleeson and (especially) Tom Hardy help to paper over some of these shortcomings, but the film definitely would have benefited from some judicious editing, a tighter script and a little less directorial ego. First off, this movie is incredibly gorgeous. From its beyond beautiful cinematography to its gorgeous locations, it's a real cinematic movie that traps you in this environment. The cast (particularly the two leads) is fantastic. Tom Hardy gives arguably the best performance of his career in my opinion. He's an antagonist with layers and even brought unpredictability to his character. But Leonardo DiCaprio, is what you go to see. Saying that he gives a great performance is an understatement. He is Hugh Glass. Not once did I think to myself that I'm watching Leo give a performance. He felt like a real person! Maybe it's not my favorite performance of his but it's beyond damn good to say the least. I loved that it was a revenge story and one that makes you clinch your fists during the big combat sequences. You feel the brutality! And you feel Hugh Glass wanting to seek his revenge. It even has really good pace for a two and a half hour long movie. I never got bored because there was always something at stake. I will say that the very end felt a little too ambiguous for its own good. Other than that, I believe you have a strong contender for best picture at the oscars. Overall, it's a brutally beautiful movie with grit and heart pounding intensity. I'm going to give "The Revenant" an A! Expand

Revenant may have been filmed well, but the overall movie is just an OK experience.......

The plot of the movie is appear to a little more than cliche........its more like Lieutenant Dunbar meet Robinson Crusoe, but this time Crusoe is stuck on snow crested forest and cliffs rather than an island.........and a familiar and cliche desire of vengeance drives our main character to progress very slowly through a rather simple and shallow plot.

Another thing that really bothered me about this movie is that at one point the main character was almost dead, his flesh brutally torn by a feral animal and he was on death bed but then he heals on his own and with in few days he is back on horse back and even survived a fall from a cliff and a fall through a waterfall during the period he was supposed to be recuperating........the pace at which Leonardo's character recovers from his wounds is very unrealistic even in a fantasy, this is one of the factors that blew this movie for me.

Its a very slow moving movie and there isn't much that happens in this movie, for the most part Leonardo's acting is comprised of moans and groans rather than actual dialogue delivery........he did a well enough job but I wouldn't give him an Oscar for this........

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. - Miserable; Not Only The Character's Life But The Film Too -

At 156 minutes, "The Revenant" is unwatchable, so it wasn't. After an hour, instead skipped to watch a minute every three or four through to the last twenty minutes which encapsulates the final conflict between John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Hugh Glass). Nothing was missed for in between is Glass grimacing left then right.

There is a harrowing, savage bear attack leading to Glass hanging to life by a slender thread. Oddly, all that came to mind is how the effects were accomplished. That goes to a lack of empathy for protagonist Glass.

This is a film of unquestioned artistic merit. Though some gush about the cinematography, it is merely serviceable. It's not the cinematography that's beautiful, it's the wilderness. All that's required of the cinematographer in this situation is to set the frame and F-stop. The actors most likely kissed pavement back in civilization after shooting this demanding film. They did well under the circumstances, particularly DiCaprio. The villain is the director and the unreachable allegory he wrote on the script pages.

In "Jodorowsky's Dune," the titular director made a few memorable Seventies' films. When pitching "Dune," the studios requested a standard length film - 120 minutes (not viable for a film from a story this complex). But Jodorowsky wondered why it couldn't be ten hours or twenty hours. He was clueless why the studios weren't funding him. The doc is in part the story of a delusional, out-of-control ego. The viewer may wish to slap his face. Enter Alejandro González Iñárritu who also appears to have an ego of the same dimensions.

God bless the artists, but not those who trade their expression for self aggrandizement. Not only is "The Revenant" a vanity project, it is Oscar bait.

Awards should be given to those brave enough to sit through this slog. It is a simple story raised to the power of crashing bore. "The Revenant" is nearly incomprehensible, and filled with spiritual mumbo-jumbo even Iñárritu most likely can't explain.

See this if you relish masochism. It's a bet this film will bomb. Maybe that will awaken Iñárritu. He's a genius. He just doesn't know how to connect with an audience. He certainly doesn't here.

Its hard to not enjoy a movie presented with such overwhelming views, the directing is wonderful as well and the unique ways of capturing tense scenes and using only natural lighting was a win. DiCaprio is solid, and his commitment to the role made the journey worthwhile. The story is simple enough, its not meant to be mindblowing or even clever, its just meant to be a journey. Its unrelenting and vicious. The bear scene in particular and the wounds close up after the fact is hard to watch, but its the realness of the actions/consequences that make it such a great piece of cinema, all the ingredients put together seamlessly throw you into the wild along with all the characters. This brutal journey is intensified by director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s masterful vision for capturing the harshness of nature and malevolence of men. Some of the sequences are technically astounding. Add to that the incredible scenery and immensely beautiful (mostly available light) cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki. DiCaprio suffers with extreme commitment, but it’s the almost unrecognizable Tom Hardy, whose menacing villain is the acting standout. The Revenant reviewed

by jd ep

In short, The Revenant could just be called "Leo goes roughing it." Widely to be considered a front runner for many awards in early 2016, Alejandro Iñárritu's film about a mountain man savaged by a bear, who then hunts down the man who killed his son, starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Tom Hardy, also has a lot going against it when the accolades come, more a story of Production vs Nature, the Canadian wilderness where the film was shot, in order (most films are shot out of order to make the most of the locations as needed) didn't have the amount of snow needed, so the filming had to move to Patagonia in South America to finish, a rough shoot for everyone involved, going over budget and taking more time than anyone anticipated. Though it can be said Iñárritu did not compromise for his vision, and what we get as an audience is a feast for the eyes, and heartthrob DiCaprio gets dragged through the mud for most of the film and so much worse happens to him. As for story, it's fairly barebones, DiCaprio's character of Hugh Glass (which i'm almost certain Bart Simpson called Moe's and used that name for a crank call) is hired by a fur trapping company to get them through an Indian hunting ground, the company gets attacked and they must make their way back to port, Glass goes off on his own and ends up on the wrong side of a Mama Bear who beats the crap out of him, Glass who is supposed to be a little more attuned to nature than the average Anglo, who has a half Native son, and can speak Algonquin, doesn't know how to play dead and shoots at the bear after it started walking away, for a second round of savagery where he gets brutalized even more than the initial attack, and all this happens within the first twenty minutes of the film. A couple survivors of the Fur Trapping team find him and stitch him up, the leader of the company played by Domhnall Gleeson, does the honorable thing of attempting to bring him home for a proper burial for his services rendered, though they get lost, Gleeson asks for a team of men to watch over the dying Glass and to give him a proper burial when he finally passes, while the rest go home, and offers a handsome bonus for anyone who does this service. Tom Hardy & Will Poulter (the boy from "We're the Millers") 's characters stay back with Glass's son Hawk. Hardy gets impatient that Glass won't die, so he decided to just bury him and tells Poulter to put a bullet in Glass, Hawk protests, Hardy kills DiCaprio's son, Poulter doesn't have what it takes to kill Glass and the two make their way back only to be denied their bonuses, due to the accounting of their provisions and everyone came home empty handed. Hugh Glass manages to drag himself back to the camp after finding his son dead and then pursues Hardy. Nothing else really goes on. It's a thin tale of avarice and revenge, where two handsome actors made themselves look ugly and beat each other up. The Revenant gives up the ghost. I thought maybe Hugh had died and he really was just a spirit of revenge, but how the movie ends is so anticlimactic it takes away what satisfaction could be had in a revenge tale. Though it was a very pretty film, for being so ugly.

Film Grade: C.

The pace switched from slow to fast too much and then there was those weird dream sequences all of the time. I get it, he killed an American officer to protect his son, but if he is fighting for his life every day and his son has been killed by Hardy, why the **** would he keep dreaming about that one incident? It's just one of the many points that makes this film unrealistic, when that is exactly what it tries so hard to be(realistic).

Worth a watch if your a DiCaprio fan, but it's not his best piece. Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed are way better. I'll even add Gangs of New York and Titanic to that list. Also I actually felt Tom Hardy was the better actor, but that's probably down to fault of the director and I had just watched Legend. Seeing the two wildly different roles one man played made me appreciate his acting so much more.

But yeah, Revenant, mehh..

"My heart bleeds. But revenge is in the creator's hands".

The Revenant is set in the 1820s, in the uncharted wilderness of America, Hugh Glass set out with a hunting party on an expedition. Glass was mauled by a bear and left for dead but through sheer will and to get back to his family, Glass survived - but that wasn't the only thing on his mind as he set out to payback the men who left him behind.

I remember last year around January time when I saw the two images for The Revenant, with Leo holding a Kentucky Flintlock Rifle looking like he's not playing around. Just by those two images caught my interest. I then found out it was directed by the magnificent Alejandro González Iñárritu who did the Oscar wining "Birdman" (A movie that I personal loved). The Revenant quickly became my most anticipated movie of 2015, as I was looking forward to this movie more than Star Wars, and yes I said it. And after finally seeing the movie myself, I can safely say that I was not disappointed. The Revenant is one of the most stunning, brutal, intense, grizzly movie experience I've ever had. The movie isn't for everyone, but I loved it.

Alejandro González Iñárritu is starting to become my 3rd favorite director working today, because he's such an old school director when it comes to storytelling by the use of art. There's been a lot of drama happening behind the scenes of this movie, with the weather stopping the production or if someone made a mistake while filming, the crew must stop for the day and wait until tomorrow, because one mistake could lose a lot of day light for a scene (It was shot in natural lighting). One of the studios suggested that the movie should be shot using computer generated to make things much easier, but luckily Iñárritu said no to the idea by stating, "If we ended up in greenscreen with coffee and everybody having a good time, everybody will be happy, but most likely the film would be a piece of **** And after seeing the movie I gotta say that it was the perfect decision, because it's very rare for a director today to take that risk and avoid what the studio says. Yes there are some CGI scenes, but the way that the animated effect's blended together with the practical effect's is handled incredibly well. This is one of the best directed I've seen in 2015 and I know Iñárritu already won an Oscar already, but I hope he wins another one for this, because never before have I seen a revenge tale presented so unique and utterly magnificent.

I respect Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, but in this movie, he sleeps inside of a dead horse naked and eats raw food from animals, now if this doesn't get him an Oscar, nothing will. He's performance in this movie is what a call ''a silent performance'', because Leo barley has that much lines in the movie and the only time he dose get to talk is in a different language (Which Leo has said it was tricky to learn the language). DiCaprio has proven time and time again that he's more than the pretty face actor, but in this movie I only saw Hugh Glass, not DiCaprio. That's my biggest praise I have to give to Leo as he had to deliver all the emotions, the pain, the tortured soul that Hugh Glass was and it's all through his face and eyes, and trust me when I say this but it's not easy as you think. We are so use to seeing Leo as the angry, pretty boy billionaire in every movie he's in, but in this movie I thought he was fantastic, as he played the man who lost everything and the tortured soul that Hugh was as a person was. With very little lines he had, he still manages to make a powerful performance that's so far his best. I really hope Leo gets an Oscar for this.

Tom Hardy also gave an Oscar worthy performance in this movie. I've heard that some people had trouble understanding him in this movie (Or just in everything that he's in really). Sometimes I didn't understand what he said but most of the time I did. But all that a side, I still think he was fantastic in the movie. He really added a lot to his character, because sometimes you understand the things that he dose in movie and yes the things he dose in the movie are wrong, but in a rough environment that these people are in, you would likely do the same. I'm not sure if he would get in for best supporting actor, but I hope he dose.

I'm running out of things to say about Emmanuel Lubezki breathtaking cinematography. The camera work and how he makes the camera feel like a character of it's own is seriously impressive. Lubezki captures nature on film, that shows it's beauty and it's unpredictable surprises. The people running the Oscars should just give Lubezki his third Oscar right now, because he's going to take that third trophy home.

Now for the flaws and there's not that many for me: Some of the character logic towards the end of the movie didn't make that much senses to me, and that's really it.

Overall The Revenant is one of most intense, stunning, brutal movies I've seen in 2015. The score is haunting, the editing was top notch and that bear attack scene was just terrifying, I mean how the hell did they do that?. I don't know about you, but I honestly can't stop thinking about this movie. It's one of those movies that sticks with you after it's over and it isn't going away anytime soon.

This visually stunning, uncompromising and often brutal revenge story and survival tale is based on the extraordinary experiences of early 19th century fur trapper and “mountain man” Hugh Glass, with plenty of dramatic license taken of course, but it also doubles as a compelling little history lesson with a clear subtext of ecological conservation.

After all, the North American fur trade was a global industry which preceded the gold & oil rush, and which had a clear impact on its environment, an early example on the damaging effects of capitalism which would become much clearer with the imminent American industrial revolution.

Beyond a tale of survival and revenge, this is an early 19th century narrative dealing with “First Nations” and the treatment of indigenous peoples by the colonizing Europeans, but rather refreshingly, ‘The Revenant’ doesn’t sugar-coat the existing complex relationships between the native peoples of North America and the brutality involved.

Much will be made about breaking the so-called “snubbing” of Leonardo DiCaprio at the Oscars, but any acclaim directed his way is well deserved as he delivers a committed performance that’s intentionally often hard to watch but impossible to ignore. Not to mention a strong supporting cast, with Tom Hardy as the antagonist of the piece particularly catching the eye.

Iñárritu and cinematographer extraordinaire Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki’s insistence on using only natural light and the film’s long production time, coupled with the logistical nightmare of location shooting in such a beautiful but unforgiving environment, all conspire to place ‘The Revenant’ pretty high on the list of most gruelling movie shoots.

But that pain is up on the screen for all to see and is crucial to both the narrative and the very feel of the film, the result is visceral and striking, a real triumph of naturalistic filmmaking. Perfectly captured by constantly moving cameras, signature long tracking shots and low angle close-ups that give ‘The Revenant’ a real sense of urgency.

In fact the film feels like Iñárritu co-opted the cast and crew to take some great voyage of discovery to understand the people they were portraying, men who lived on the edge of survival in inhospitable and barely discovered lands on the frontiers of North America nearly 200 years ago, and of whom very little is known much less written.

The Bottom Line…
Alejandro González Iñárritu’s fascinating evolution as a filmmaker continues with this remarkable tale of survival, revenge and redemption, ‘The Revenant’ is a visceral and engrossing cinematic experience that deserves all the praise it gets.

And, while I have not always been a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, he does put in a fine performance here. Tom Hardy captures the ambivalence of malice. His is a Shakespearian character writ in grit. To say that the film is gorgeous to look at does a disservice to the creators. Every frame is a painting. The unalloyed brutality that runs through the film reinforces the sense of the folly of man... very relevant to the time in which we now live. Expand

The film follows Glass after he is mauled by a bear and left for dead by his fellow fur traders. One of the frontiersmen, John Fitzgerald, kills his son, and Glass voyages over 200 miles to exact revenge on him. The Revenant is one of the most violent movies I've seen from 2015, although the incredible scenery and cinematography also make it one of the most astonishing movies to look at. It combines some intense, difficult-to-watch scenes with amazing scenery which makes it one of the most beautiful violent films I've seen. Leo's committed and demanding performance is certainly one of the best of his career especially because of the lack of the dialog in the film. The 156-minute running time, relentless brutality and limited dialog does take a bit of a commitment to finish, but The Revenant is a masterfully directed film that makes the most of its subject matter's intriguing story. Speaking of characters, DiCaprio's performance as Glass is amazing, along with Tom Hardy's Fitzgerald. My only con with this movie is its runtime, which I think could've been cut by about 20 minutes. However, its imagery is fantastic, its performances are great, its action is intense, and it is one of my favorite films of 2015, alongside Inside Out and Spotlight. Expand

Despite this, The Revenant is truly an absorbing and captivating tale. Using the Native Americans vs the white man as it's historical basis, the revenant manages to conjure up impeccable imagery and devilishly clever cinematography to soothe an otherwise harrowing journey. Don't get me wrong, it stings hard, the blood stains the screen and you can feel scars form across your skin as you watch Di Caprio clamber and spit through snow, grass and flesh. As a testament to the Native Americans who lost their homes and family, The Revenant is an undisputed masterpiece, but what it's trying to achieve for Hugh Glass is ultimately, a tad messy. Expand

The acting here is near perfect as is the directing. Alejandro González Iñárritu has taken the amazing performances of the actors involved which, of course, include Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy (and a whole list of supporting actors, who all turn in award calibre performances, especially Forrest Goodluck, who plays DiCaprio's half breed son), and molded the film into a near masterpiece of cinematic art. For me, what keeps this movie from having a perfect 5 stars is that it drags on a bit in the middle. Is this one of DeCaprio's greatest performances? I think so. I'll be very surprised if he doesn't finally take home an Oscar. Expand

As in Birdman, here he experiments with shooting and cinematography; which are one of the few things that goes well in this picture. The camera is placed precisely in the moment of both psychological and physical stress, the director chooses it at ground level and with close up to tired faces, suffering eyes, dirty hands and demolishing wounds; in order to reflect the Greek tragedy that faces the protagonist. The thing is that it does not go any further than that. There is no plot whatsoever, the script is poor, the soundtrack not outstanding and the outcome is simple and very predictable, making these 156 minutes a fight for survival, not only for the protagonist, but also for the viewer. It’s important to mention that DiCaprio’s performance is OK, nothing special, if he is awarded is just because the Academy has a debt with him. On the other hand, Hardy is really the one people should be cheering, amazing performance, no critiques. So in summary, lazy movie, probably the worst work of Inarritu. Expand

This film is excellent, but it's not laden with a mess of subtexts or any disorienting storytelling gimmicks. It's extremely straightforward, as are the characters, and there are some moviegoers who cannot forgive that. Personally, I see something simple executed to near perfection, and I appreciate it as such. This film is visually stunning, and incredibly immersive. The early battle scene is extremely reminiscent of the infamous beach scene of Saving Private Ryan in it's chaotic realism.

The film doesn't pack much in the way of fun or glitz, it's just different people making their way through the woods for one reason or another with a fight here and there. But I loved this, there was something just brutally serene about the whole film.

Since his victory at Oscars last year, Innaritu has become a famous name and perhaps that is how he pushed the financiers to add 100 million more the the movie which was shot in the best location of northern america.

The sequences, is the word that keeps circulating my mind after watching it. The best one is the opening one. Because it has that suspense and thrill, you don't know who are they and who is attacking and what is coming to be their fate. All you see is brilliant work at screen and that great score in your ears.

Movie soon starts to take shape still we are confused what revenge will be the soul of it. Bear scene is deadly, but as internet has been taking about, it's exaggerating (much like Inarritu's overly hyped Birdman). Soon after we find out what revenge the title talks about.

But more then revenge, it's a survival movie. A man who survives everything being driven by the energy to seek revenge. Scenery of the movie is magnificent. And they have brilliant cinematography and Score to make it magical. However at time it feels excessive and ploy to win awards (we know how much they want it). Even at time's it felt like National Geographic's documentary.

One thing that The Revanant lacks is the grip over script. Characters are quite shabby with focus on only one character and one goal which makes everyone in the story a supporting character who did not get any attention by the writers. As I mentioned before, one is confused who would Glass seek revenge from? But even after it's cleared, we are so driven by the title and the sequences that we don't realize how hallow the reason of revenge is. And we also ignore the superficial recovery of Glass's wounds which accelerated (even) at the final night at camp. Not to mention the use of horses that much high at snow is bit too much.

Leonardo Dicaprio is heart and soul of the movie. The actor brings all the intensity (much like his all roles) to the character. He slept in a horse carcass once but he slept in Glass's mind for months. He deserves every bit of recognition for going into those frozen waters, eating raw meat and doing deadly stunts. Tom hardy (who is amazing otherwise) rather then playing a southern rotten soldier played Christian Bale from The Fighter. His accent was very fake and so was his performance. Rest of the actors did not got much to do they appeared as puppets. Cinematography, Score and Editing are perfect. Inarritu tried to take inspiration from James Cameron for stunning visualization which he succeeded but Mr Cameron never compromises on the script which Inarritu did. But he brought together all those people and made this movie which is great (if you could digest all lope-holes)

While it still retains the depth and symbolism of all of his previous films, Innarritu also manages to make one of the best survival movies ever made. Parallels can be drawn between The Revenant and George Miller’s Magnum Opus, Mad Max: Fury Road. Both feature incredible characterization, an extremely well realized world, beautiful cinematography, and a main character who has extremely little dialogue, yet still manages to provide emotional context and be believable with just a stare, manner of walking, or wave of a hand. Both are light on overall plot, yet still manage to create a world that seems real, that the viewer can easily immerse themselves in. Both are masterpieces, and The Revenant caps off a wonderful year for filmmaking, highlighted by returns to form from legends such as Ridley Scott and George Miller, as well as another home run incredibly close after the last by Alejandro G. Innarritu.
Bravo to you, alejandro, I look foward to the next masterpiece.

Leonardo DiCaprio gives one of the best,if not the best performance of the year by a male in a leading role and I truly hope that this time he actually gets to win an Oscar for this. He's so committed to the role and it shows especially in some of the more brutal scenes.
Tom Hardy also nails the role perfectly and gives almost an equally great performance as Leo.His voice is weird though but by now we're used to him having different voices on different roles, even though sometimes is hard to understand what he's saying.
It does get brutal though and some of the things that the characters have to do to survive are beyond disgusting but reasonable and understandable for the situations they're in.
The soundtrack is also very good but it's not what you take away from the movie the most, because the amazing cinematography and the style of the movie, the direction that Alejandro G.Iñárritu goes including here the two amazing performances of the leads are what you take away the most about this amazing cinematic achievement.
At 153 minutes it is a bit too long but that doesn't take away from the movie that much because this still remains as one of the best movies of the year with some of the best performances, cinematography, visuals a really good score and memorable scenes that are bound to stick in your mind for a long time after.

Visually breathtaking and emotionally rich, 'The Revenant' is a mesmerizing film with more Oscar-worthy work from director Alejandro González Iñárritu as well as a truly amazing performance from Leonardo DiCaprio.

The fact that this was shot without any CGI lighting in the most brutal of conditions should already put this movie on the radar for any movie-goer. Add to the movie that this is by Innarritu who directed Academy award winning Birdman, and you know that this movie sets expectations high. There isn't a scene anywhere that is wasted, those who complain about length and dullness (critics and average movie goers alike) seem to forget the adrenaline-pumping moments that demand your attention. In an era where comic movies with excessive CGI and low effort writing are winning views and reviews, this movie should be a stunning reminder to everyone that this is the real deal when it comes to film-making, entertainment at its highest form.

Addedum: How does a movie with a 76 metacritic rating end up with a 78% on rottentomatoes, when The Avengers that scored a 67 here ended up with a 92%?

I'm disgusted. The story of Glass is a story of a completely pointless revenge, brutal and inhuman. Without having anything to fight for, all parties in the movie seem to aim at creating pain for the respective other ones. I didn't even enjoyI'm disgusted. Holy Smokes. I just finished watching this captivating movie a little
while ago and it was Absolutely Phenomenal. I will start with the story
which is about the explorer named Hugh Glass who is left for dead by a
friend after a brutal bear attack in the American Frontier of 1823. The
story is extremely solid especially since it's based on a true story. I
did find the story dragging a few times but it doesn't take off of the
score. I will now move onto the acting which was Breathtaking with both
Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio playing their roles to Perfection like
in every movie they have ever done prior. I must say that the two of
them together make for one Hell of a powerful movie experience. The
other actors played their roles just as well even though they were
minor in comparison. I will now move onto the action which was if I
dare say the most Savage and Barbarous Adaptation of combat during that
time period which took place on the American Frontier of the 1800's. I
mean it was Masterfully shot and truly one of a kind even to present
day Military movies. The military movies of today pale in comparison to
just how Ruthless it was back then for the men who fought. I will now
move onto the Cinematography which was done by Emmanuel Lubezki which
is a Master of his Arts. I mean they shot the film in both Canada and
Argentina and a small part in America but the dedication it takes to
travel all the way to South America for snow just to double as the
American Frontier says volumes on how dedicated the cast and crew were
on this film. I can't stress enough how visually stunning the shots
were and how realistic it all felt and the music was on point even
though it was sparse it was still Amazing. I will close with this
statement and that is that you must go and watch this film. I mean it's
one of the Best Films and the most refreshingly original films in terms
of the cinematography and the depth of the characters will power to
evoke just how Indomitable the human body and the human spirit can be
when it wants something bad enough.
