This film was so beautifully filmed because it was all filmed in ambient light. No extra lights, just with the light around them, and reflectors. From a photographer's perspective, this is extremely hard to do so this film is absolutely phenomenal.

A raw and brutal film, that tells a simple yet really powerful story. Both DiCaprio and Hardy are award-deserving, as are cinematography, direction and score.

In this case, the film exceeded my expectations. The narrative tells a fictional story about one of the trips of Hugh Glass, an American pioneer and adventurer who actually existed. In this film, he is the guide of a group of hunters who venture into native territory to collect animal fur, a valuable and profitable item at that time. When the group is attacked by Indians and only a few survive, Glass leads them until he is attacked by a bear and is abandoned on the verge of death. Then he begins a struggle to survive, to return to the colony and to punish those who abandoned him.

Firstly, I loved the story. It is a classic story of revenge with an aroma of "Count of Monte Cristo" that has nothing astounding, but works well. Iñarritu knew how to give the film an excellent rhythm and dynamics, where there are no dead moments and everything is perfectly articulated and completely clear and noticeable. For me, what displeased me most was the invention of a son that the main character never had and that only exists in the film to increase the dramatic effect, but it is something that we managed to forgive before all the redeeming qualities that this film presents. It also has several action scenes with struggles, ambushes, deaths and even a rape (not explicit, but clear).

The cast is a fundamental part of the value of this film. Leonardo Di Caprio is a great actor, one of the best of our time, and he had nothing more to prove when he decided to make this film. He started a career in roles where all he had to do was be pretty, but he evolved, he became a real chameleon capable of surprising us with each film. But he still wanted to win the Oscar for Best Actor, for which he had already been nominated three times (in 2005 with the film "The Aviator", in 2007 for his work on "Blood Diamond" and in 2014 for "The Wolf of Wall Street"). Di Caprio appears here as we have never seen him, with an almost raw and violent realism. Tom Hardy also did an extraordinary job, giving life to the greedy selfish Fitzgerald, and Will Poulter, who we still remember to see emerging for the cinema in one of the Narnia trilogy films, is truly moving in a naive and nice character. Domhnall Gleeson was also excellent.

In addition to the engaging story and a strong cast that gives everything it has to surprise us, the film features the skill and detail of González Iñarritu, attentive to the smallest details and realism of what he is filming. Once again, he had the collaboration of the experienced Emmanuel Lubezki, who had already signed the cinematography of "Birdman", also by this director. The film is visually magnificent: the camera moves in our perspective as if we were part of everything, running away from the Indians and crawling on the floor; the skillful use of colors, natural light (not a single spotlight was used), filming in a real location, contrast and the effect of blur and depth gave the film a realism that almost transports us into the screen. The use of excellent costumes and the construction of genuine sets has also helped, and allows us to be better placed in the historical period when everything is happening. I can understand those people who criticized the film for exaggerating a bit in the filming of trees, sky and landscapes, its something that can tire some viewers, but I liked that and, for me, it was an additional quality. The use of CGI has not been overlooked, in particular to recreate the animals and the bear, but everything is so realistic that we can almost doubt the use of CGI. The sound and special effects also worked perfectly and the soundtrack is truly effective.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great movie. Would recommend it to everyone. It's a long movie, but it didn't bore me a second. I think they should have explained more how Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) lived with the Indians before his wife died. But despite that small thing, it was amazing. Great acting by both Leo and Tom Hardy. The final fight scene was very climactic and the fight choreo was good. Time flew while I watched this piece of entertainment and I was sad when it ended. Great story, acting and filming. Everything you want from a survival/ action movie. Expand

It doesn't offer a light at the end of the tunnel to motivate you to keep watching and goes from one terrible thing to another. The first and only movie I have ever walked out on because I honestly found it so exhaustingly depressing.

This movie feels like a rare case in this day and age where a production like this is able to use every tool in the box to truly capture the 'feeling' of being present in its world. The use of longer shots with minimal movement and noticeably allowing digital effects to enhance sequences as a tool and not overwhelm the viewer stand out here. The acting is superb on this grit worn thrill ride. From start to finish, I was completely enamoured with each sequence on this epic journey across the Dakotas. While the story isn't that great (It's a revenge story, basically and can get predictable at many points), The Revenant's strongest points are its visuals and acting. The direction and cinematography are brilliant. So many long shots, so manyWhile the story isn't that great (It's a revenge story, basically and can get predictable at many points), The Revenant's strongest points are its visuals and acting. The direction and cinematography are brilliant. So many long shots, so many interesting visuals, so many shots that come straight out of a german romanticism painting. The action scenes are some of the best I've ever seen. Every shot feels alive, with so many things to see, so much to talk about. All thanks to wonderful directing and genius cinematography. The acting is also great, and while the characters are not like really deep or complex, the performances from the actors really give them so much personality and realism to everyone. Leo really shines in the "survival" scenes. His grunts and screams are so realistic that you feel the pain. This is a movie that might be painful to watch to some, but I know that is the point, and for what it tries to make the viewer feel, it works so much. I could give it a 10, but my only real issues are the story, which like I said, it can get really predictable at so many points. Some dream sequences, like (without spoiling anything) they keep reminding us so many times the same event that affected Hugh's life, like, we know it already, it got to the point where it felt like it was just time filler. Speaking about time: The time is also an issue. The movie is 2 and a half hours long and it does feel like it, because it gets so unnecesarilly slow. Don't think that I can't appreciate a slow paced movie, because one thing is slow but with interesting visuals (like Roma) and other is slow because the shots last longer than what they should.

Regardless, despite those issues, i give it a 9/10, because basically everything else was done in a flawless way. This is a great film and I highly recommend it.

Driven and captured with incomparable, enthralling cinematography of some of the most graphic and invigorating sequences in recent memory. And carried by the painfully-vengeful performance by Leo Dicaprio, who may not be at his best (in my opinion), but is certainly as his most vulnerable in this pic. But Tom Hardy in my opinion, was equal to Leo in his crazed lunacy and recklessness. Altogether forms a moviegoing experience that is enfused with the best of what cinema has to offer. However Revenant has a disease that many, many "trying to be great" films suffer from. And that is being overly long and overly dense to justify its subject matter. Some films need to be stretched out, but Revenant felt like it was reaching beyond its means. You actually lost a lot of what drove the movie from the onset and became hazed by DiCaprio's wander in the bush. Most of it is very beautiful, but until its terrific and overwhelmingly satisfying end, rests far too many moments of that had no reason being in the final cut. That being said, there's so much goodness juiced into this film, it's difficult to walk away and not say you were unbelievable enamored and impressed. Expand

How much talent has been put into this movie ... I can not even imagine.
The story is quite simple, nothing amazing, but how it is presented, that makes this movie special.
The acting is as always, very good (I did not really like Tom Hardy, I mean his accent).
The cinematography is superb so is the soundtrack.
The action scenes are very well done, especially the bear scene (that CGI tho).
The second act was too long in my opinion.
I'm glad that most of the movie was made practically without CGI (except for some animals).
And when I think these things have happened, I get the goosebumps.

But it just doesn't feel like an overall satisfying film. I think the biggest problem with this movie is that it doesn't know whether it wants to be a survival film or a revenge film. It introduces itself as a revenge film but 90% of time, it seems that its just a survival film. Only at the very end does it suddenly switch back to a revenge film. And the plot doesn't really go anywhere in terms of character development and story. Its more or less just telling us "DiCaprio has to go through a lot, look at how much he has to go through" so much to the point where it's like: Yeah we get it, is the plot/story going to advance anywhere?

***SPOILER ALERT***

One of the BIGGEST issues I have with this film is the ending. And by that I mean DiCaprio's character not finishing off Hardy and instead letting his fate be put "in God's hands." Ummm wtf??? Where the hell did this "death is in the hands of God" theme come from and why??? Not a single moment throughout the entire film did DiCaprio's character reference God/religion so why have this unnecessary and random revelation??? It would have been a MUCH more satisfying and sensible ending if DiCaprio had killed Hardy himself. A very poor "twist" and definitely one of the weakest points in the script.

Despite its flaws, this is still a decent film, though I would certainly say that it does NOT deserve to be nominated for Best Picture.

I was kind of bored the first time I watched it, but the second time I understood the message a lot more and was far more engaged by the story than the first time I watched it. The cinematography in this movie is just outstanding: long takes, engaging shots and very pretty pictures. The performances where also exceptionally good, Domhnall Gleeson falls a bit short next to the performances of Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio, but that wasn't too distracting. The Revenant is a must watch!

Every single scene was captured completely with natural light, creating a beautiful setting that is almost as haunting as the acting of a vengeful Leonardo DiCaprio & and a menacing Tom Hardy. Sadly, the film loses a little of its intensity due to it's extreme length and tree obsession. Still, this is an amazingly epic & brutal film, and one that finally rewarded DiCaprio with his long-awaited Academy Award. Expand

Leonardo DiCaprio is the greatest actor of his generation. There….now that we’ve got that out of the way…

The Revenant is the based on Michael Punke’s fictionalised novel telling the story of 19th century bear trapper Hugh Glass. After a brutal bear attack Glass is left for dead in the wilds of South Dakota with the harsh elements, murderous native Americans and, worst of all, the French to deal with.

Glass is determined to track down the man who betrayed him — John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) who is not only responsible for leaving him behind, but also killed Glass’s son while the hunter was powerless to stop him.

From the outset director Alejandro González Iñárritu delivers an incredible sequence featuring a full scale attack on Glass’ group by native Americans. The majority of this scene appears to be one long take, a favourite technique of the directors’ used throughout his previous oscar winning credit Birdman. This battle takes things to another level however. The number of elements on screen at any time, from charging horses, to firing rifles, to burning trees, leaves you wondering just how the sequence was accomplished.

Beyond the performances it is the cinematography of The Revenant that is it’s greatest achievement. Director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki has previously worked on the award wining Gravity as well as 2007’s Children of Men which also featured a breathtaking ‘single shot’ battle sequence. To my mind The Revenant must be his greatest work to date. Almost every frame of the film could be printed on canvas and hung in a gallery. The visuals are all the more impressive when you consider that Iñárritu largely insisted on using only natural light when filming, meaning Lubezki often had to rely on something as inconsistent as the weather to light the desired shots.

While The Revenant is often pitched as a survival story or a revenge story, to me it is more of an exploration of men as animals. Between Glass’s animalistic drive for retribution, the native Americans and their on-going quest to find an abducted member of their tribe and the animals themselves, everyone has largely the same goal — to protect their young. The bear mauling that acts as the inciting incident for the drama is also driven by the bear protecting her cubs when Glass comes across them while scouting.

Speaking of the bear — the mauling scene is another breathtaking piece of filmmaking that has to be seen to be believed. Quite how it was put together I still can’t figure out. Again using ‘one long take’ technique, the attack is relentless, desperate, and brutal. I’ve heard the expression ‘mauled by a bear’ before but I’ve never really knew what that meant, until now.

While its safe to say the plot of The Revenant is fairly thin, it is DiCaprio and Hardy that remain the driving force of the narrative. Isolated for the majority of the run time Dicaprio has very few lines and relies on physicality and facial expressions alone to convey Glass’ suffering. It’s hard to imagine anyone else that could bring the humanity and desperation to the part that DiCaprio does. The debate about the actor winning an Oscar is almost redundant at this point. He should have won years ago. If this doesn’t do it however, I don’t know what will.

Hardy’s job in the film is more straight forward but is no less compelling. Fitzgelard is a bitter, selfish and unforgiving man who bullies and intimidates his way through the situation for his own personal gain. Hardy’s character represents the other side of man’s animal nature, advocating the philosophies of survival of the fittest and every man for himself.

With two complex characters played by two actors at the top of their game, the film builds to a tense and deeply personal confrontation which I will not in any way spoil here.

The supporting cast should not be overlooked however. Fresh off Star Wars Domhnall Gleeson continues to prove himself as a great character actor as the conflicted Captain Henry while Will Poulter shows he can hold his own with Hardy in some pretty intense scenes.

For me The Revenant is the perfect cocktail of source martial, directorial style and performance. In equal parts harrowing and beautiful it may not be a film to be casually re-watched, but if you think of yourself as a film fan in anyway it is certainly deserving of your time.

Personally I don't think so, but aside from that point, The Revenant is a film that exudes cinematography of the highest level, technically is impeccable, its photography is simply shocking, the music is sublime, all those aspects are perfect to my point of view.

The filmmaking is risky and strong, but there were points where the pace is a bit slow, easily the film could lose 15 or 20 minutes
But apart from a few mistakes in the narrative, The Revenant is a complete film and very, very well done.

In this vast and frigid, white expanse of emptiness, how is it that all of the principals inevitably camped within a few hundred yards of each other and came across each other without fail for any of the action scenes? This movie drags you through the mud along with Glass, it is such a visceral and real experience, an experience i havent had since watching Saving Private Ryan. The beauty of the movie is the silence, the quite, the alone, that gets to you after 2h30m
It's more of an experience than an ''entertaining film'', it takes you in, and drags you along, very few movies can do that effectively, that you forget about everything except about the movie. (whilst watching)?

My biggest compliments to Alejandro and Lubezki for pulling off this incredibly difficult to shoot film.

One with exciting camera angles, beautiful scenery, and gorgeously depicted brutality. While the story ends up boiling down to a simple revenge tale the cast behind it is phenomenal. Bringing to life every emotion necessary to make things succeed.

I am once again blown away by Hardy's ability to play so many different characters. He and DiCaprio are powerful here. The latter in particular brings these events to life in ways you would never think possible. It's a violent, brutal film. One almost unrelenting. DiCaprio truly captures the essence of a man fighting for his very survival.

While nearly every obstacle is gripping in it's depiction, admittedly one flaw the movie has is that the events follow the shocking opening scenes that kick things off in the first place fail to live up to what comes before. There's also the fact that there are going to be those who feel the movie is too long. Some trimming could have been done here or there, but ultimately it's length doesn't do it too much discredit. It's an amazing ride all the way through.

It's an outstandingly put together movie. One with incredible moments happening almost constantly throughout. The violence and harshness of the events on display are masterfully captured. It does stumble in a few areas that keep it from reaching the heights of a true masterpiece (at least in this reviewer's opinion), but overall it's a fantastic movie almost nonetheless. One very deserving of your time for the performances of everyone involved alone.

The Revenant is a lot to take in, whether it's regarding the incredible scenery captured on film, the expertly-executed camera work, or the solid casting. The Revenant works so well that it doesn't need a lot of dialogue to keep your attention over its lengthy 2 1/2 hours of runtime. At times, there's heavy brutality, whether it be through a knife fight or a bear attack, that really made me turn a bit in my seat. That kind of portrayal is definitely not for younger folks or weaker stomach. I wasn't completely blown away by the movie, but I see why it had lots of Oscar consideration/victory this past year. Most importantly it just takes forever. It begins quite nicely, it grabs you but as soon as "the painful part" starts the whole thing goes down the litter. You will then have to watch a mix of DiCaprio grunting in pain and some nice scenery with a not much more exciting vision here and an indeed much more exciting scene containing Tom Hardy there. Really, Tom Hardy made the movie. If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't have watched it till the end which I still somewhat regret because it was so damn long.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not against long movies at all. Just a few days before I watched The Revenant I tried The Hateful Eight which is pretty much as long as The Revenant and in that movie the time flew by. I didn't even look at the clock for once.
What I especially do not understand is how DiCaprio got an Oscar for _that_. Why for this compilation of grunting-sounds but not his role in the Wolf of Wallstreet or Django Unchained? ONLY if all the stuff he did in the movie was done without any kind of special-effects as if for example he really pushed himself into a horse cadaver of some sort I would agree and say he might get his Oscar for the effort. But the acting? You might say the role didn't give him enough room to shine as much as in the aforementioned movies but, well, that's bad luck then. If any of the actors in that movie Tom Hardy should've gotten an Oscar for that.

Beautiful scenery, Leo is wonderful, but 2 1/2 hours was 2 hours too long for me. Artsy film but not entertaining to me. On the bright side I leveled up on angry birds and caught a nap during the film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well done production-wise, and good acting I guess (even though there's rarely someone for Leo to interact with). But there was too much just watching horrible **** happen to the main guy. Also some unbelievable plot points. Riding a horse off a cliff, but saved by a pine tree? Come on, the guy shoulda been dead halfway through. Lost points for halfhearted mystical bull**** as well. Expand

The one who came back from the dead to avenge.

The movie was inspired by the real event that sets in the year 1823, United States. When one of the crew members of the hunters left behind after he was severely hurt from a bear attack, he desperately looks for a way to get back to the camp alive, especially to avenge for the death of his close one. The whole film was about survival in the wilderness and to avoid the native Americans. But the introduction in the opening was very brief and in the final act, it was another brief man hunt. Overall, it was an enjoyable movie for adults with some gruesome scenes.

The movie was made on a grand scale. Well written screenplay, good direction, the cast, music and the locations, but it would have been even awesome if it was true to the original occurrence. I felt it was cinematically overdosed, especially for the commercial purpose. The fans of Leonardo Dicaprio's overwhelming celebration created a huge buzz. In fact, it looks like the entire Hollywood is his fan and the Oscars given to him out of sympathy, because I have seen his best performances better than this in the past.

The length of the movie was a big concern, should have been at least 15 minutes shorter. But the visuals were fantastic, the CGI bear was almost flawless. There are plenty of reasons why this should not be missed, at a time the narration lacks the realism. Otherwise, it would have made a wonderful semi-documentary film. So don't have high hope on this, especially if you're no ones fans, but just love watching movies like me. A little bit overrated everywhere, but still this movie is good, just good, that's it, not a masterpiece.

I really disliked this movie.

Stylistically, the long sweeping shots of scenic vistas without dialog are aesthetically pleasing, but style cannot substitute for lack of story. By the 90-minute mark, I was done with it. Sadly, it went on for another hour.

This flaw in pacing was not helped by the absolutely terrible score. It's clear there was a deliberate choice to go minimalistic, but it just didn't work. If you're going to make a two and-a-half hour movie that's anchored by long shots without dialog, the least you can do is help the audience feel like things are moving along by putting some excitement into the music.

The way it's directed and edited, every single character for whom the audience starts to feel sympathy soon gets killed, and always through no fault of their own. It's as if the director delights in repeated fatalistic displays of the world's moral failings. After the first hour, I was so depressed I wanted to shoot myself.

And in the end, what is it about? Getting from point A to point B without getting killed in order to exact revenge? The payoff was in no way worth the investment of time, emotion and boredom. If I had seen this in the theater, I would have walked out.

Also, if you're an animal lover, do yourself a favor and do *not* see this movie. No fewer than five large mammals are killed on screen, and none in self-defense.

Because I enjoyed some of the cinematography and performances, I'll give it a 2/10. Otherwise, it would have been a 1.

It is incredibly gripping, full of beautiful shots, and very dark with outstanding performances by Leo, Tom Hardy, and the rest of the crew. It must be understood however that those looking for a 1800s action thriller will be disappointed as it is simply not that kind of movie, nor was it meant to be. This is simply a story of redemption and revenge, and survival against all odds, and while it has action the majority of the movie consists of Leo walking around just breathing between the action scenes. It is a very slow paced movie, which adds to the realism in many ways and allows for awe inspiring shots of the landscape. The fight scenes are incredibly realistic and refreshing as it is no longer simply a bunch of choreographed punches and well timed hits like all Hollywood films, but rather all out brawls that look unorganized and lifelike. The only faults I give it are that the movie doesn't have a consistent pace, as in the beginning we couldn't miss a character blink and the final 10-15 minutes cover like a 1-2 day period. Also at times there are scenes that are too long and unimportant. You'll spend 3 minutes watching Leo slowly ascend a hill just to see bison run around on a plain. Despite these flaws the Revenant is a movie definitely worth the watch, and rightfully delivered Leo is first Oscar award for best lead actor Expand

Leonardo DiCaprio in what could be hist best role yet completely amazes you in every scene he is in. The Revenant is easily one of the deepest and most intriguing films of this decade. It is a film that excels at everything it does, from the breathtaking scenery to the grueling stunts. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy`s performance are so mesmerizing that you forget your watching a film, and instead a Biopic. The clear determination from both actors to excel at their roles is made very evident in every scene they are in. The tone of the film is dark and gritty, perfectly describing the times with which those men lived in. The cinematography in this film is on a completely different level. The choice to use natural lighting instead of artificial is a gamble that pays of massively. Overall this is a fantastic film that deserves all of the countless awards that are inevitably going to come its way. Expand

While the opening was interesting, and the first half-hour gave us an incredibly visceral war scene that is frankly a piece of art in and of itself; the rest of the film was just torture-porn of the worst kind. Leonardo DiCaprio did a good job here but that's not enough to save this film. The films plot can be summarised as, "nature beats up Leonardo DiCaprio for two hours while he's near death after he gets mauled by an unrealistic looking CGI bear". This is pretty much the only key event in the film and the rest is just a long drawn out torture scene as we watch poor Leo grimace and strain at the camera for hours. It's almost painful to watch and not because you're sympathising with the character, but because you're not interested in watching someone languish in pain for yet another run-on scene. Honestly, I would question the emotional stability of those who enjoy this, as I feel it would take some pretty entrenched sadism to get pleasure out of watching this. Expand

The scenery is amazing; the graphics of the bear mauling impeccable; the intermittent gnashing of teeth (DiCaprio's) punctuate scenes like the icy blast of winter's first freeze, cutting the viewer to the core. No doubt, his performance was impressive, and he committed to the role with an intensity that skewers the viewer's soul, much as the computer-generated bear did to DiCaprio's nearly frozen limbs. The story itself misses the mark historically, as the real Hugh Glass did not have a son; however, the overlying, timeless theme of righting someone's wrong rings as true in the 1820's as it does today. It is that drive to make someone accountable for his actions that keeps the viewer glued to the screen from start to finish. One can't help but wonder what he or she would do in a similar situation, and how he or she at one time has also felt like Hugh Glass, wishing to make someone pay for another person's wrongdoing. In addition to DiCaprio's performance, Tom Hardy proved a force to be reckoned with, chewing each scene as hard as he did the wad of tobacco he slid carefully between his teeth and cheek intermittently. It was his performance that was perhaps the most overlooked, and the final reckoning between Hardy and DiCaprio was a cinematic masterpiece. Expand

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a man struggling to survive in the wild in Alejandro G. Inarritu's bloody, bruising frontier epic.

A traditional Old West survival-and-revenge tale assumes the dimensions of a harrowing voyage to the American frontier's heart of darkness in The Revenant. Pushing both brutal realism and extravagant visual poetry to the edges of what one customarily finds in mainstream American filmmaking, director/co-writer Alejandro G. Inarritu, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and a vast team of visual effects wizards have created a sensationally vivid and visceral portrait of human endurance under very nearly intolerable conditions; this is a film that makes you quite glad to have been born in a century with insulation and central heating. The combination of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, the director and critical enthusiasm in most quarters will make this Fox release a must for audiences in search of cinematic red meat (something the story offers up in abundance, and mostly uncooked), although vegetarians and viewers with otherwise delicate constitutions could spend half their time squirming with their sweaters pulled up over their eyes.

For a director who normally takes several years between films, Inarritu has remarkably turned around his most ambitious physical production within just one year of his awards-laden Birdman. Even the untutored eye would quickly recognize this as the work of the same key talents; The Revenant may use plenty of cuts and is set nearly entirely outdoors, but the fluid, prowling, sometimes gasp-inducing camera moves, along with the great depth of field, are the same. And both films are about men on the brink, in severe extremis, a condition that helps justify and sustain Inarritu's artistic high-wire act. It's Jeremiah Johnson meets Apocalypse Now.

Set in 1823 in the Rockies, less than two decades after Lewis and Clark led their map-altering, continent-opening expedition through the territory, the story is based on actual people whose real names are used in the film as well as in Michael Punke's 2002 novel, upon which the script is quite accurately described as being "based in part." In a way, the biggest difference between the novel and the film is that the former is aided by a map, very specific descriptions of the proximity of rivers, forts and other landmarks, which provide clear indications of how far the gravely injured hero must travel to get to what might pass for civilization in this context but certainly not in any other.
Inarritu shares screenplay credit with Mark L. Smith, whose prior creative endeavors lie in the realm of low-budget horror (Séance, the Vacancy duo, The Hole), and the script immediately ups the story's existential ante by deliberately not revealing how long a journey mountain man Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) might be facing, or whether he has any realistic hope of finding any place with a roof over it. On top of this, any temptation to provide the central character with interior monologues to reveal his anguished thoughts and feelings has been resisted; for most of the running time, he is limited to expressing himself via painful grunts and cries and very heavy breathing.

Their ranks decimated and with winter closing in, the white men decide to head back, which brings on the scene, 25 minutes in, that which no one who sees it will soon forget (and which will certainly pass through the mind of any viewer who in future takes a hike through bear country). While taking a rest in the forest, Glass is charged by a mother grizzly bear. The man injures her with the one shot he gets off from his long-barreled rifle but then can do nothing as the incensed creature slaps, claws, bites, rips open and steps on him with her giant paws before retreating. Beyond the sheer terror she provokes, the bear's behavior is fascinating to observe; for a good while, she sniffs and assesses her adversary closely, both in the manner of a cook judging the seasoning of a dish and a kid deciding about whether to play with a toy any longer. She retreats ... and then comes back for more.

The score by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto, with additional music by Bryce Dessner, is effectively ominous and grim.

It has been noted before, but The Revenant indicates, more than any film Lubezki has shot, the influence of the Russian team of director Mikhail Kalatozov and cinematographer Sergei Urusevsky on his work.

A brutal and gripping pre-Western.

Alejandro González Iñárritu has proved that he is not a one hit wonder with this movie. The cinematography is the best I’ve seen all year with great single shots instead of cutting scenes. The natural lightning used in the movie was just beautiful to look at and made the movie viewing experience great. Leonardo DiCaprio‘s performance in this movie hands down the best performance of the year and his career. If he doesn’t win the Oscar then no one will. The other performances were great. I was really fascinated with the gore aspect of this movie it felt more realistic than any other R-rated movie. The score of the movie is brilliant. The only issue I have with the movie was that it’s a slow paced movie and I’d have loved to see more of Hugh Glass’ backstory.
In the end The Revenant is one of the best movies of this year. I recommend everyone to watch this movie just for Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance .
