An excellent film, delighted with the performances of Jackman, Bale, Johansson and Caine. It keeps you on edge until the last second. Chris Nolan may not be my favorite director, but it must be said that he never disappoints.

Every part of the film is great, from the graphics to the character development. I'm not sure how well it did in terms of accolades when it came out, but it should have piled up quite a number. The tale is richly layered, the acting is great, the direction is breathtaking, and so on. There isn't a single aspect of this picture that I would change. Congratulations to the whole team that worked on this project. It is one of the finest films of all time in my opinion. If you have the chance, I strongly advise you to see this film. You'll be pleased you did, I believe. Expand

This movie is Nolan's masterpiece alongside Memento, and the last great movie of his entire filmography.
The plot is not simple, I will try to resume it : Two young apprentice wizards, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, are taught and tutored by Cutter, an illusionist engineer and former wizard, but during a number where a woman is tied up and placed in a glass case full of water, something goes wrong. and Angier will blame his friend for what happened, trying to take revenge. Thus begins a cruel game between the two men about who is the best and the rivalry will gradually turn into obsession.
Here Nolan stages a great direction, with tight and precise camera movements, fantastic shots and also the script which is usually one of his weak points turns out to be solid. Fantastic Bowie in the role of Tesla, brilliant even to have thought so. From start to finish it all comes together.

Warning: Spoilers
As said in my review for his masterpiece 'Memento', Christopher Nolan has always struck me as a very talented film-maker, and most of his films are ones that have impressed me a lot. Even weaker efforts, where his ambition can get in the way, have a good deal to admire. His films are all impeccably crafted technically, and often entertaining and thought-provoking, also knowing how to get good performances out of talented casts.

'The Prestige' is not quite perfect, but is still very good and one of Nolan's better films. To me actually it was close to outstanding, which makes my issues with the denouement even more frustrating. And it is the denouement that's 'The Prestige's' biggest problem, being over-baked and with one twist too many, the second of which being a convoluted cop-out and like the other twists before the denouement didn't happen.

Was also, to a lesser extent, expecting more from David Julyan's music score, having done such a great job with the score for 'Memento'. His score for 'The Prestige' works within the film and has a mystical and dread quality, but it is not one of those scores that is listenable or even re-listenable as music on its own, lacking the cleverness and mood and thematic complexities of his work for 'Memento' and being somewhat too simplistic to be entirely memorable.

However, 'The Prestige' looks wonderful. The cinematography is slick and the production values in general are suitably gritty and audacious, complete with gorgeously evocative Victorian period production and costume design. Once again, Nolan directs impeccably, not letting his ambition get in the way of the storytelling, while the script is smart, thought-provoking and intricate without trying too hard and treating the audience with respect. The pacing is taut while deliberate, and while the film is long there is enough to keep one riveted.

The story for 'The Prestige' is quite the fascinating tale, with an incredible period and darkly magical atmosphere and twists and turns peppered throughout but done in a way that the storytelling is coherent and taken with sincere seriousness while not coming across as emotionally cold.

Fine acting all round, with a charmingly flamboyant Hugh Jackman and intensely charismatic Christian Bale perfectly cast and playing off against other wonderfully. Michael Caine brings class and dignity to his role, and seeing how he altered his voice and posture for it it was clear he was right in the zone. Rebecca Hall, Piper Perabo and Scarlett Johansson also do well, as does surprisingly David Bowie in an unlikely role. Andy Serkis is similarly memorable.

Overall, imperfect film but also a fascinating one, flaws and all it is for me one of Nolan's better films. 8/10 Bethany Cox.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an interesting movie that gives you a bit of insight into the world of magic and illusions, in the late 1800s. It does well as a period drama and it is quite intriguing, uncovering the murkier side of magic, with some strange but fascinating characters.

The movie teaches you that its not the trick of seemingly making something disappear but rather tha trick of making it re-appear, that truly captivates and endears the audience. This is what they call 'the prestige', hence the movie title.

There is quite a mystical aspect to the movie, which kept me interested to see the movie through to the end. There is alot of mystery involved and you get a real feel of how obsessed such magicians were back then, at a time when they were at the top of their game and huge audiences flocked to see such acts, with a constant strive to come up with more spectacular illusions to keep such audiences amazed and amused and it obviously touches on what consequences can occur, when such people become so obsessed with this and try to out-do their competitors, with more and more riskier tricks.

The performances from Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson, among others, are all good and mixed with the pretty captivating special effects, it makes it a pretty good movie.

This is an itneresting movie, with a real twist at the end that certainly I was not expecting.

It is quite sinister and sad in a sense, exploring the darker side of the publics interest in magic and illusions at that time (late 1800s and early 1900s) and showing what dark things such an obsession with this can lead to and bring.

This movie is fairly complex, story wise, but its interesting enough, at least im not usually one for period dramas but did find this interesting enough to watch through to the end.

If the story interests you, then you should definitely check it out, though be sure to pay attention to it, to be able to follow the story properly. Recommended.

Recently I decided to take a look at all of Christopher Nolan's films. I have watched The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and Tenet; and now it was this film's turn. At first I was a bit skeptical of watching it because of how complicated Nolan's films are, and on top of it this one is about magicians. So that would be even more confusing. After having seen Tenet I was overestimating this film. It's nothing as complicated (though it is fairly so), and that's for a good thing.

It's funny there are three actors in this film who also played superheroes movies - Christian Bale (Batman in TDK Trilogy), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine in X-Men), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow in MCU), and out of them Scarlett Johansson hadn't even come up as Black Widow yet. And since those are the only roles I have previously seen them, it was a bit weird seeing them do basic, method acting. The only one I had seen before do multiple roles is Michael Caine (Alfred in TDK trilogy), but he's in every Nolan film I've ever watched so he doesn't count. And all their acting was actually pretty convincing.

The story is what mainly carries this film. There are two magicians who have two completely different ideas about magic. Borden is more of someone who believes in making his life more devoted towards magic, while Angier is someone who believes the charm of magic is more based on presentation. Both the magicians hold grudges against each other due to an accident which happened in the past, which is the reason they are constantly trying to outdo each other.

Seeing this film I got to learn so many magic tricks that I otherwise used to dismiss as simply being some complicated trick my tiny brain is too weak to understand. My take from this, especially from Alfred Borden, was that to understand how magic works, we have to go to the absolute basics. How something is happening, how we can convince the audience that we are doing what they are thinking and how we can do it so smoothly that no one suspects a thing.

This is something that we can say about science too, which was shown here by Nikola Tesla - what do you think is responsible behind what you see? If Edison had tried thinking it this way instead of trying to get to Tesla, he could have been considered just about as respectable while Tesla would have never been as famous as he is today. Though I didn't quite understand how exactly the whole cloning using electricity thing worked, I guess some things are better left to the viewer's imagination. The way Angier described how it feels to be cloned also left me in my imagination - what would happen if I am cloned with all the memories intact? Which one of us will be me?

Forget The Dark Knight trilogy, now this is my favourite film by Christopher Nolan. I only learnt about Hollywood movies a few years ago, which absolutely explains why I never knew about this film. But now that I do, I'm going to recommend everyone to see it once. Seeing all the tricks and, like I mentioned above, trying to figure out how to deduct an act, I also felt like becoming a magician after watching this film.

It’s another example of how moviegoers and makers have embraced the format of ‘Style over Substance’. Everything about the story is so far-fetched and unbelievable that most of the time it’s simply not worth even considering the outcomes. It’s presented as if its fiction-fact, then swings into ridiculous science-fiction; Human Cloning in the 1890s! (and regularly overnight at that) If it weren’t for some reasonably convincing performances from the leads, stylish art direction and production design, moody lighting and cinematography (except for some unsteady hand–held sections) this production would have fallen over in a heap. As it is, it holds it's own based on stylish looks smothered in over-done smoke and mirrors camouflage. Many seem to go for this style and bluster but some will come away feeling cheated and taken for fools (and not in any sort of a good way), it doesn’t do to think too much about this type of basically too clever for its own good writing. Characters are bleak and over-the-top nasty, not leaving much (if anything) to admire. Expand

The magician endorses it to be split into three acts, but Nolan whispers, one and it is monstrously beautiful.

The Prestige

Prestige is probably the most shrewdest adaptation that nothing but serves the "wow" factor on our face, it feels plastered. Adapted from Christopher Priest's novel of the same name, by the Nolan brothers, this remains about a magic in that very sense. That you are hooked and wowed at the end of the show, till it's big reveal. The film is about a two friends-turned-rival magicians who loses themselves and their loved ones in order to prove the superiority over each other.

And the film walks for that unsaid scoreboard mentality for the most part of the film. Grabbing points by excelling or cheating, this mano-y-mano aspect of the storyline deteriorates very quickly when bigger themes like art, science, philosophy and ethics dive in. The clash between art and science is what fascinated me the most, especially after the film started accounting in, the infamous feud between Tesla and Edison.

Often in a film that deals with parallel characters going awry and coming home, the film cheapens its content in latter stages by manipulating the audience emotionally. But the film dodges this bullet by wisely never revealing the hand that helps us in surviving this film. Empathy is never installed forcibly and even when for a brief period in its last act, you feel the film going soft on the characters, it actually turns the tables by revealing information that is always said to be hidden and not reversing the roles of any elements. This underrated genius often goes unmentioned, but it requires a closer and a second look. Nolan's film's malleability has been arctic over the ages. Not stiff, nor cold, but moody. To a degree that you will bow down to its celebratory behavior and PG-13 language. Something you don't see nowadays.

I love the unconventional (and Nolan-esque) storytelling, which shifts back and forth between the past and the present. I love Christian bale, who makes one of his finest performances here (I can't decide if this is his best performance or the one in American Psycho). I love how they show you how some of the illusions are performed and the trick STILL feel like true magic.

And no, I'm not forgetting the other actors. The performances are all wonderful. Hugh Jackman is never bad in anything he is in, and The Prestige is no exception. I also love the small part David Bowie plays in the movie - a shame we didn't get to see more of him on the silver screen before his passing.

This is no action movie filled with magic trick, like the equally brilliant Now You See Me. No, The Prestige is a mystery film, and a great one at that. The thrills of this film are contained within the magic, the competition between two illusionist in love. The storytelling has a nice flow to it, and the movie feels compelling from the beginning to the end. And just when you think you've figured it all out, the Nolan brothers throw in a final twist and shake it all up again! It makes the entire film itself feel like one, massive magic trick.

Although I do appreciate the nonlinear narrative structure - seen in most of Christopher Nolan's movies - I felt as though there was a lack of a resounding punch when this movie ended. This mostly has to due with the inclusion of music in many scenes, like situations where characters were arguing. I would have appreciated if they hadn't used any sounds other than the dialogue and background noise, as it diminishes my emotional response to those particular scenes. Not only that, but "The Prestige" moves from scene to scene in a very abrupt and rushed manner, which sometimes doesn't give the audience time to assess what's going on.

I loved the many themes played throughout this film and I enjoy the twist at the end. A little bit too expository for my taste, but great ending nonetheless.

Overall, even if I have some issues with "The Prestige" that prevents me from giving it a higher score, I honestly think it's a very enjoyable experience and if you appreciate Nolan's work - like I do - you will have a good time watching this.

Good : This is obviously my most favorite Christopher Nolan movie, along with "Memento" (2000). Just like you can relate the theme of memories and interpretations shown in the story of "Memento" with the actual experience we had while watching the movie, we can relate the three acts of a magic trick narrated within the story, and with the movie itself. As the movie says, the final reveal in a magic trick is the most thrilling experience. So is that of this movie. In fact, the whole movie can be weirdly related to a magic trick. It is one of those movies which feel quite ordinary until a major twist makes it great. Speaking of the cinematic experience, it is a typical Nolan styled movie. It has broken timelines to enhance the storytelling, but unlike in most of his movies these are done more artistically than just for the thrilling reveal. This is perhaps the movie where Nolan's broken timelines have enhanced the storytelling in the most brilliant way. Like in most of movies, he dwells in a single theme - here it's obsession. The obsession of Robert Angier is what drives the plot of the movie, and is well established and doesn't even feel forced. There is a protagonist, and an antagonist in this movie. The character (by which, here, I mean obsession) development is done so smoothly that we see the protagonist become an antagonist, while the antagonist remains somewhat the same. Though we don't get a full "interchange" between the antagonist and the protagonist, as the movie progresses, the protagonist feels more "wrong" than the antagonist. That's quite a difficult thing that it pulls off. Alfred Bordon is one of the most "complex" characters I have ever seen. He feels like some kind of a prick throughout the movie, and there are a lot of scenes to establish it for the viewers. That's until we get to know his character in the third act. It doesn't make him right for his apparently wrong doings, but he gets the respect for his dedication as a magician. The whole Tesla plotline might feel like a convenient plot device, but Tesla is a scientist who is rumoured to travel through time. So, that is quite justifiable. Hugh Jackman has given a solid performance. This must go down as his best performances with those of "Prisoners" (2013) and "Logan" (2017). He is completely out of his public persona of Wolverine. He is the best possible choice for Wolverine imo, but reminder of Wolverine every time he appears on screen isn't so adorable. He didn't remind me of Wolverine at all, in this movie. But, the major highlight of the movie would be Christian Bale. He has given a terrific performance. You don't even get a hint at the complexity of the character he is portraying. It's after the reveal and in fact, in the second viewing that you start noticing the actual stuffs and the actual interpretations a particular scene is to be given. .
.
Conclusion : All in all, it's a fantastic movie. The way obsession play out to be the main theme, the way broken timelines are used for storytelling and the way the final twist is revealed - simply excellent. Rating. .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. We all know Christopher Nolan and the way he works very well. Films such as Memento, Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Night and Dunkirk reaffirm him as one of the best directors and writters in Hollywood. However, this is probably his most underrated work. The plot of this film is so consistent and brilliant that keeps you thinking about it for some days. Furthermore, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and David Bowie are terrific in this film. Expand

Christopher Nolan's adaptation of "The Prestige" is a masterfully realized psychological thriller, with fantastically bonkers twists and turns laden all throughout an utterly fascinating narrative landscape. Jackman and Bale make for fantastic rivals and their individual performances are brilliant, cerebral, and textured. The writing is really well-thought-out and challenging in terms of structure, but not to an incomprehensible degree. It's taut, tense, creative, and boundary pushing. In short, it's a classic Nolan flick. Expand

It's a story of unbridled rivalry, revenge, pride and vanity. The film has many merits but the main one is the script, the story that tells us. There are some more predictable parts, others seem initially incomprehensible until the movie explains everything. The ending is one of the most positive aspects as it's totally unexpected and, in fact, makes everything else worthwhile. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman played the main characters, working very well together and showing us the best of each other. They are brilliantly aided by veteran Michael Caine and by Scarlett Johansson. David Bowie is a surprise, but was quite reasonable in the role of the famous physicist Tesla. In fact, the whole cast did a good job and met expectations, at times when it failed to shine. However, the great problem of this film is precisely the characters. They are detestable, especially the magicians. No one was able to deserve my sympathy and, deep down, I was glad to see both of them being punished for their wickedness. Caine, in his character, mirrored this repulsion very well at certain scenes. And while Tesla's machine allowed a good increment to the story, the way it was done was so far-fetched that it spoiled the movie a bit, too. Anyway, it's a good movie with a very interesting story, fulfilling well its mission to entertain and surprise the public. Expand

Basically, there are some actors, that I personally don't like. I don't know if it is about acting or just look and appearance, but yeah, you get the idea. For some reason, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are in that "Black List". So, I was looking first at the high score and then at the names of that two actors, that honestly are pissing me off, but finally I decided to give the movie a try. Guess what.. Nope. Whatever someone is doing, even if it's something special or part of something big (like a great movie like this), if that person piss you off generally, well, that's probably not going to change in the future. .

Anyway, the movie on the other hand is good - the idea, the cinematography. I gave it 7/10, just because of the cast members, that I don't sympathize. I recommend it. Don't see, actually, why you would not like it, unless you are like me, hating Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale.

What better way to expound on that than in a story about dueling magicians hiding their secrets from one another.

There are metaphors galore in this (how could there not be in a film about subjectivity and obsession) but it struck me this time how convenient the story is. It moves constantly and forcefully forward, revealing twists all the way, daring you to try and outguess it, so at first it's easy to miss on the plot contrivances and somewhat simple nature of it all. But I'm also not sure how much that matters. The film works, it really does, even when it's less than artful.

However, what's most unique here is that all those ideas crucially don't come at the expense of a really tragic and flowing story, where somehow the double-crossing and mysteries really add to the whole experience of the narrative.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's very hard to fault indeed actually...

Are you watching closely?

The Prestige is a mysterious, eye-poping Nolan-classic that got magical and rememberable moments that truly gives your brain something to work with. Nolan really is a true, and of course ambitious director/writer, that got the courage to do something different.

The structure in The Prestige is similar to Memento, but still a bit less confusing. But it's still a non-linear movie and I really admire that! There're a lot of things in The Prestige I would love to talk about, because it really is a stunning movie, and it have over the years become one of my all time favorites. It's so ambitious, mind-bending and overall awesome! This is a movie that's up for discussion, over what it's really about and what REALLY did happen in it. I don't want to spoil anything but there's a lot of mind-bending in this one, especially after the first time you watch it. I really recommend to check this movie out, because it got so much to tell, especially when it comes to obsession, basic life and of course; "magic".

One of the greatest aspect with the director/writer C. Nolan is that he makes movies that's ambitious and that's bigger in every scale. Just look at Memento; he successfully combined the main character and his dysfunction to make new memories, to the whole movie. It's the same with The Prestige; the whole movie is a magic trick! Thats how incredible Nolan is! Great aspects with this movie are of course flawless performance's by Michael Cane, Christian Bale and of course Hugh Jackman, but also a high amount of unique moments that we haven't seen before and of course the magical ending! I also love that the movie is so much more than a basic classic one, it feels like a real trick, a real show with a real artist performing on stage. It even feels like I'm sitting in the audience, watching closely on the tricks. That's definitely a wow-thing with The Prestige! I also feel greatly entertained every time I watch it, because there're hints throughout the whole movie about what REALLY happen near the end. One smaller negative aspect might be the soundtrack, it's not by Hans Zimmer (surprisingly), and it doesn't feel that epic as it could have been.

The Prestige was a great movie the first time, but it wasn't until my second or third that I really understood that this really is one of the greatest ever made. In my eyes is it even greater than Inception and Memento, and just perfect. Everything from the dialogs to the acting is stunning, even though the soundtrack could have been better and that the trailers did spoil one specific part, so don't watch them! Watch the movie instead, because it's freaking incredible! This is a classic work from our beloved director/writer Christopher Nolan, he gives us these ambitious mind-bending movies of art that impresses everybody. I wonder how he does it, but remember; "the secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything."

"Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled."

9/10.

The fact that I watched it now in 2015 for the first time may influence the 7 out of 10 rate I am giving it. We have seen several bigger, better and more ambitious films by Nolan by now, so this one about two magicians who become enemies pales in comparison. It has all the great elements present in Nolan´s films though. Very good acting, interesting story and quality. With an ending that always offers an enjoyable and intelligent pay-off. The things lacking in this occasion are the phenomenal score present in most of the other Nolan films and also, although this is probably a question of personal preferences, the fascinating topic. Space, how our mind works, etc are way more exciting than magicians, as proved by the stunning Inception, Interstellar or The Dark Knight films. Expand

The trick almost works, but not quite… With its mechanical twists and turns and lack of heart, the movie often resembles Sleuth in superficial ways, except The Prestige resorts to cheating while Sleuth relied on cunning and guile. As is too often the case with narratives that try to be oblique to the end, the film's climax is strangely predictable. The Prestige goes to a great deal of trouble - including a triple time-line - to protect secrets that aren't all that surprising or hard to guess.

With a pedigree as splendid as the one behind The Prestige, the movie's inability to captivate consistently must be considered a disappointment. In the sweepstakes for best 2006 movie about conjurors performing circa 1900, The Illusionist is a few steps ahead of The Prestige. While one could argue that both films telegraph their third-act surprises, The Illusionist is less ponderous and more enjoyable. There are times when The Prestige bogs down and the needlessly convoluted way in which director Christopher Nolan elects to present the story doesn't help. Maybe he was looking for inspiration from his brilliant non-linear Memento.

The Prestige is too well made to be considered "bad," but it fails to deliver in ways that will earn it more shrugs than raves. There's nothing wrong on the acting front: headliners Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are at the tops of their games as rival magicians caught in the grip of an obsession to defeat one another. Michael Caine is delightful in a supporting role. Scarlett Johansson is wasted playing another love interest - a part with which she is gaining too much familiarity. Rebecca Hall plays a similar role but does it better. There's also a bit of stunt casting, with David Bowie playing real life scientist Nikola Tesla.

The narrative eventually missteps by taking a wrong turn down a road that leads into science fiction. For a period piece that is so meticulously detailed, this is an odd way to go, and in a way it seems to be a betrayal of all that has gone before. Its integration is awkward and it alters the suspension of disbelief curve (not for the better). Even buying this premise is not guaranteed to open the gates to unfettered enjoyment. As is often true of movies about revenge and obsession, The Prestige is cold, and Nolan crafts a storyline that is more complicated than necessary. If his goal is to make things seem more profound or to obscure what's around the next curve in the plot, he is not entirely successful. As for the explanation at the end…yes, it's one of those instances in which a guy holding a gun provides a blow-by-blow account more for the benefit of the audience than the other character.

Those hoping to gain insight into how magicians work won't find a lot of help here. The details of a few tricks are revealed, but they're filled with cheats that can be found only in movies or literature. The title is explained as being one of three steps in a trick: the pledge, the turn, and the prestige. Oddly, it's that third act, the prestige, where this film is found lacking. There's plenty going on but never any real magic.

It seems that in most Nolan's film, the ending scene always appears at the opening but his narrative style however manages to make audiences to forget that regardless on the complexity of the content he tries to confuse us, it is actually a straightforward plot with the key answers already revealed indirectly at the first scene. The performances of Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are extremely outstanding, thanks to the character developments that allow them to be both the antagonist and protagonist at the same time due to their eagerness for glory that they have eroded not only the morality of this magical great art, but to sacrifice their own lives and the one they love. The duality is a brilliant central concept of the film extracted in two different ways on both leads, it never stops engaging but to challenge the mindset of the viewers with several dark twisted plots and ambiguity. Although with a bit of weaker scores (due to no Hans Zimmer), Nolan's smart piece of magical art is interesting to stress that the trick of victory comes only when a person overlook and think that he has already won the rival. It's rushed but works. The entire film focuses on the attempts of these 2 men to outclass one another and how they end up bringing great pain to themselves. The Premise is quite basic but Nolan juggles multiple story lines and muddles it in a way that makes it not so easy to follow. This movie is more of a puzzle than a meaningful film. It keeps playing tricks on you but once the novelty wears off, it's easy to see, it's too smart for its own good. The more tricks it plays on you, the more you raise your eyebrow and go, "Hmm, did he need to do that?" because most of these stunts don't contribute too much. In a movie that's so cold at its core, you can't be emotionally invested and these tricks turn frustrating, even annoying. But the 3rd Act is what really killed it for me. The Prestige builds up a lot of suspense in the first 2 Acts and the answer it provides at the end is-"Magic"- and that was so unsatisfying to me. Another major problem I had with it was that in this cold-hearted rivalry between these 2 despicable men, Nolan actually does reveal a winner, which was again very unnecessary. Through the film I thought it was trying to convey, "if you fixate yourself on bringing pain to someone else you end up hurting yourself". But the ending threw that right out of the window.
The Prestige is defined as the final act of a magic trick that instills fascination; ironically, it's the prestige of this film that let it down. Well the Prestige isn't art but it's still fun to watch; at least the first time.

The screenplay suits the well chosen actors, the atmosphere gets one's imagination attracted to a different time & place, visuals are all satisfying. Mind tricks all across as an additional flavour for the mind.

"The Prestige is an interesting film about a rivalry between two magicians, but when the twist happens, you will be disappointed by its predictability, thus spoiling the rest of the movie". 5/10.

This is what I wrote while watching this movie, (I wrote it down about 5 minutes from the end) and I was going submit it as my review; until I saw the last three seconds of the movie. My rating has jumped to 8/10. I shall say no more, except that the greatest trick Nolan pulled on me was almost making me believe he had made a very predictable and dull movie. But, he continues to amaze me, as 3 seconds of a movie can make such a difference.

I am absolutely in love with Christian Bale AND Christopher Nolan. Christopher Nolan, in my opinion, makes THE BEST movies EVER and Christian Bale is the greatest actor today. Yes, there are lots of great directors and actors, but they can't make EVERY SINGLE ONE of their movies SO GREAT. Except for Quentin Tarantino.... He and Nolan are the best. But if Quentin makes fun movies that are not always serious, then Nolan makes the best thrilers! I can't forget his The Dark Knight series, Memento, and now, The Prestige. You absolutely should watch The Prestige. Expand

The Prestige was quite interesting with all the magic tricks that are impossible to pull off contained in it, and the acting was magnificent as well as the story.

Really enjoyed this movie. If you overlook the plot holes, it is quite gripping and eventful. Better than the final batman and one of Christopher Nolan's best. 8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me, this movie was a disappiontment, because of two things. Two fatal flaws that ruined the whole experience for me.

1st: I couldn't care about rivalry of Jackman's and Bale's character, because I didn't root for any of them. They were both bitter, and blind, and I didn't sympathize with them. As a Rival movie I'd rather recommend watching AlPacino's and Robert Deniro's "Heat", which had a way more interesting duel between, where both characters were interesting and reasonable.

2nd: That machine. That f*ckin machine. SPOILERS on the way..: You have a machine that can duplicate anything. Man, woman, cat, dog, food, money, gold, anything. And what does Jackman's character do with it? Do something that can help the people?PFFFF. NO. HE USES IT FOR THAT GODDAMN TELEPORTING TRICK..*sigh* But you know what? Okay. Let's say he just doesnt care about anything else on this planet (*cough*selfish bastard*cough*), but that one trick. Okay. I understand it. I don't agree but I understand it....BUT, WHY IN THE MOTHERF*CKING, BLODDY, *SSR*PING HELL DOES TESLA GIVE SUCH A GREAT MACHINE TO SUCH AN IDIOT? OR TO ANYONE? One of my friends said because it didn't work as he intended. But, GOD, there were hundreds of scientist who discovered, and invented things accidentally. Is Tesla really that choosy.? I don't believe it. No, I, I just can't.

Apart from that, the movie was enjoyable. Dark, but enjoyable with an interesting twist at the end. Now that I think about it, Christian Bale's story was at least well-thought-out, well, compared to Jackman's story. If you like stories played in the old England, with great actors, with half-a-good-story and you can forget about the Machine and hpw they use it (NOT THAT EASY.) then maybe you can enjoy this movie more than I did. (not a big praise, is it?).

A perfect equilibrium in mystery storytelling. The acting may not be at its best, but it is saved by the charm and faults of both lead roles and Michael Caine takes the torch of guide and accomplice with undaunted and unstated pride. Did not understand but that was certainly the point; to blur the line between illusion and reality. In thst way, the film is a huge magic trick as it leaves you wondering how they just pulled off what they pulled off and what reality actually is. In that way, this film is a major accomplishment. Nolan is really on the top of his game here. Bale and Jackman were also great leads and while they were not in a ton of scenes together, they were undoubtedly dominated the screen. Another major plus was the costume design and the sets. As a period piece, they did a great job establishing the feel of the era. I also liked the undercurrent of rivalry in everything in the film. It was a really nice touch.

Main complaint is that it was very hard to follow since it jumped around a lot. This was a huge problem in the beginning, but by the end, more things made sense. But, the editing bothered me a lot as scenes seemed to be a mishmash with little care put towards continuity and flow.

I cannot use foul language here, as much as I feel the urge, so I will just say this: shame on all of those who gave this movie a positive review, regardless of whether they did it because they are stupid or just because they are liars. I can't afford to waste two hours like this anymore, and I would like a warning before I see a dumb plotted, predictable piece of excrement like this one here. Who could have imagined that one guy had a twin brother, and that true magic would come about produced by none other than Nikola Tesla?! And the lead characters' motives, ridiculous. At first he hates him because he caused his wife's death, but then he couldn't care less any more about his wife, he just wants to ruin his act and steal his lousy tricks. The other guy reciprocates wholeheartedly. If you wondering who he is and who the other he is, you weren't paying attention. It's completely unimportant. Who cares. It just an awful, awful, aaaawful movie. If you haven't seen it, I envy you. Stay away!!! Expand
