This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not too bad. Good action movie, but a tad lackluster in some departments. CGI was a bit iffy in one or 2 scenes but overall not bad. Don't expect a proper Predator film though, look at it as a sci-fi action film as it falls short and disrespects the lore to some degree. It's an Enjoyable action flick but not a true Predator movie.

The one thing I waited on in the end by the coffin left behind by the 1st predator, when the kid said "it has a name, the Predator killer" I half expected Arnie to pop out of the box and say "I'm Back!" LOL Hell, they took so many liberties with the lore - they might as fell have done that for some laughs.

I haven't felt this mixed walking out of a theater since Star Wars The Last Jedi. There are many things I liked that legitimately made me happy and there are things I hate that made me legitimately angry. Before I break this movie down, II haven't felt this mixed walking out of a theater since Star Wars The Last Jedi. There are many things I liked that legitimately made me happy and there are things I hate that made me legitimately angry. Before I break this movie down, I think it's important to tell you my sort of ranking/stance on the Predator franchise. Starting with my ranking of all the previous Predator films from best to worst: "Predator", "Predators", "Predator 2". As for how I feel about Predator; I've loved Predator since middle school and even though the alien films are better in quality, I always felt Predators were more fascinating and enjoyable to watch and even though a lot of people say the Predator sequels are all bad, they all have special places in my heart as guilty pleasures. I just enjoy everything about them from their code of honor, their weapons, who they hunt, and their backstory. So when I heard Shane Black (a writer and actor in the first Predator and a great director with films like "The Nice Guys"), I was excited... until I saw the movie.

To start with what I liked, I was surprised by how enjoyable the characters were. A lot of the Predator sequel common criticisms are how bland the humans are and looking at the trailer, I thought it was gonna be the same here, but they were funny, unpredictable, and had great chemistry with each other. It also helps that Shane Black added a lot of humor in the film. While a lot of people seem to take issue by the humor (most saying they're trying to be like Marvel), it works... mostly. I also always enjoy these movies for pushing the R rating, which seems to be lacking in blockbusters today. I can't help but chuckle or jaw drop at some of the brutal kills and while they went a little overboard with the swearing in some scenes, it added a lot of comedic moments in others. It was also nice to see a lot of callbacks or references to previous Predator films and even an AVP easter egg to connect these films into a bigger story. Another pro was the classic Predator for this movie. This guy was so fun to watch from the first fight onward. I love how resourceful he was too; doing and using things I've never seen a Predator try before. I just wish he was in the movie longer. It might seem like I love this movie so far, but now let's talk about what I hate. The new Predator origin for starts. Why? I was fine with them being hunters who travel the galaxy in search of trophies. But now the reason they hunt is to upgrade themselves, and they're hunting more on Earth because global warming is gonna wipe us out in a few generations and they'll repopulate here. If you think that sounds dumb, wait till you see what the upgrade does in the third act. Also, why are there upgraded predators? It's like hunt a lion with a tank. The Predators already have an advantage over their prey with all their weapons so doesn't it kinda ruin the whole point of the hunt to make yourself more overpowered. And the upgrade is just that. He's usually boring to watch. Unlike the classic predator who has to use stealth and be creative because he's strong but still vulnerable, the upgrade can make himself bulletproof and just walks up to people. I didn't mind the "Bad Blood" predators in "Predators" because it seemed more balanced, but the fight between the upgrade & classic predator was a joke compared to the predators fight in "Predators" and the trailers and even one of the posters spoils the whole fight. There are also some plot holes with the predators logic in this and I keep finding more plot wholes the more I think back on this movie. I also hated the kid's plot in this movie. It brought the movie to a halt most of the time and they make his autism a superpower in this movie. The payoff for his story arc is also one of the worst low points of the series. I dare you not to be dumbfounded when that scene pops up. After the first act seems to take this film as a traditional predator film, those who go in expecting that will be disappointed. It acts as a parody of Predator films (teasing their name, backstory, and tropes). Maybe that was what Shane was going for since the first Predator started as a light spoof of 80's action movies. Or maybe he just didn't take Predator serious. As for the action and effects, it's serviceable, but most of it isn't that impressive. And that ending... no. Just no.

Overall, this movie would have been better if they took the kid out, had the whole upgrade storyline stick to one "Bad Blood" predator who wanted to hunt other predators, and forces the classic predator to join the humans to fight the upgrade. However, I don't want to see a sequel to this. Maybe a different story (maybe one of the predator coming to earth during different time periods), but as far as I'm concerned, this movie is not canon. It might have legit moments of enjoyment and pass off as an alright movie, but it's still probably the worst of the Predator films.

The immune sadness I have in my face for drawing that really cool poster, seeing the way it was marketed… Anyways, the review.

The Predator is just a movie. No real consequences,no great things about it,no fun…Just a generic little movie that just exists for the purpose of money. Shane Black now helms the director’s chair on this fourth take on one of the more disastrous franchises ever (following a negative sequel and some otherworldly Alien crossovers),and the result is just a movie that takes probably some of the wildest plot directions I’ve ever seen. More so than Jurassic World 2 to compare it in terms of wild plot twists.
That’s the main problem with The Predator: it’s that it’s so….Dysfunctional in its story that doesn’t know where to go with its material that it takes forever to reach a conclusion, coming from a plot that feels like it has some nice ideas that’s getting so desperate to grab the audience’s attention that more often than not, throws a one-liner or a comedy bit to keep the viewer awake.
Oh yeah,I forgot it had comedy. Man,was the comedy frustratingly unnecessary in here… The original Predator had the comedy, sure, but that movie had it when the plot wanted to,but in here,it feels like the script’s going override with its material, forcing the movie to have a “Nothing” factor to it. Like, you’re having this fight in a darkly lit school (assuming from the color palette),and even then you have time to **** and moan about your life?
I guess some moments were funny, like Keegan Michael Key’s character, who feels like he’s forced to have a fun time, otherwise the paycheck is not at home. Also this one kill that was superfun to look at,where Sterling K. Brown’s character has one of the few guns of the Predator Armor and he just turns his head, letting the gun shoot to his head.
All of this mostly detracting from an aggressively decent score by Henry Jackman (super disappointed, considering that last year he made one of the best Action Movie scores of the decade with Kingsman TGC) that just straight cashes in on Alan Silvestri’s original score.
The kills are probably the highlight of the movie. Some of them really awesome to look at,while some of them could’ve been cool...If it wasn’t for the CGI Green Splooge or Fake CGI Blood…
I honestly don’t know what I’m writing in here, man. This feels like the kind of movie where you have to remember the good and the bad to write a review in here, and that shouldn’t happen from a movie that’s supposed to be (at the very least) fun,or bad it’s good,or whatever. For a Shane Black movie, this feels like the movie where we’re gonna be all thankful for Iron Man 3 (another franchise movie of his that was actually great, but panned by the fans),considering everything I just said about it. There may have been a Predator in here, but the main picture can’t be considered like the titular character.

"What are you? Shut the **** up"
During a mission envolving the rescue of hostages, a U.S. team end up catching a space ship falling from the sky, a ship that was being persecuted by another ship. When they go to investigate the ship, the soldier McKenna found the technology from the alien know as "Predator" and from that he steal the tec and start a fight with the alien. So they triggered a super hunter that wants to destroy the human race, where ex-soldiers and a scientis gotta stop it. Directed by Shane Black and written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black.
Well, let's begin with the first act from this film, i think that this story starts well, it, with some mystery, a very nice touch of action in stealth mode, so it starts going fine, i think that they introduce the characters well, you get to know how they are from they speaking about them or the other about someone, so that was fine. The problem is also since the very beginning, why would someone take guns from an alien and this alien try to kill you right after, and then decides to send the full gear for the son that you love so much, that is just so off. The script overall is such of a mess, i mean, they tried to make a predator movie, in a kind of deadpool jokes way, i don't think that it fits, but if they really wanted to do this, i think that it would be better to be a not connected to the other franchise movies of predator, but they do mention the other movies, the good ones, so i don't think that it fits, if they decided to make a spin-off or something like that, i believe that it would be easier to accept it. There are so many scenes and events in this movie that are so dumb, like the thumbs up that the predator do with the dead guys hand, or the predator dog playing nice with the humans, even catching a ball and bringing back, come on, that isn't really funny, not for predator, that felt like those movies that are parody from a serious one, like "Meet the Spartans" for example, just didn't worked out. The story invented somethings that isn't original in any possible way, a race that wants to destroy the other one, and then one rebel will try to save them, i'm not even gonna say that it is that bad, but still ain't very creative, and from that i think that a lot of things doesn't really makes much sense. The ending is terrible and awful, it remembered me from the Resident Evil 2 ending, where Alice beat Nemesis with her hands, in here it kind of happens the same thing, but before that, it was interesting to see the super predator fighting decision, giving them advantage time and having some fun in the fight, but the elapse of it was so bad, somethings was like, "they really wanna go with this dumb plan?" and even worst than that, is that the predator falls in it, it's ridiculous, the lack of creativity in these moments was really the worst. More through the end, there are so many conveniences that are decisive for the conclusion, that it lost me completely, you will not just think that such powerfull and advanced being will have such weakness in his technology, it just don't match, they way that they beat him is so easy, and with some script holes that i couldn't buy, for real, somethings didn't made any little sense.
The movie does have some fun moments, the transition between some of these moments to horror or action didn't worked very well, the action scenes start well, but they lost the hand during the course of the movie, i like it that it was gore and a lot of blood, some really mercyless strikes wich was fun to watch, the cgi wasn't perfect, you could see it in some moments. They sold the idea that the super predator was so strong that when they beat it, it did felt ridiculous, because they couldn't beat the regular predator, how they could beat the mega one in such simple way, with damn gun, pistols, shots and a arm.
Olivia Munn character, apparentely is a scientist, but she end up being a military especialist out of nowhere, a thing that they could easily fix with one dialogue, she is ok, don't really have much intepretation to do. Boyd Holbrook convinces in the action and as a leader. Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Jane make a nice duo, they are funny. Trevante Rhodes does have charisma. Sterling K. Brown is a ok villain, his interpretation is fine.
The predator is a very goofy movie, with some plot holes, conveniences and coincidences, a way to cliche script, characters that have some charisma, some gore and nice action moments, and a ending that didn't made sense, it could be fun, but i'm not really interested in rewatching it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Predator is directed by Shane Black, written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black and starring Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key and Olivia Munn.

It's all about the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black's explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe's most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

I'm not a huge fan of Predator, I love their costumes and the CGI, but this franchise didn't do that much for me, it didn't impress me that much.

The Predator is not disappointing for me as lots of people said it is, cause simply I'm a fan of the first Predator movie, but The Predator wasn't that good, it has lots of thing that had no sense!

Let's start with the things I liked about this movie... I liked the costumes very very much, they were really cool, and it's actually the most impressive thing about this movie. The CGI was really good too, but I have a problem with it too, the predators were showing up in the dark, the crew was just trying to hide something, like their mistakes so they made them show in the dark to make it looks perfect, predators showed only one time in the morning, and it was the final fight, and it was so short.. anyways, let's back to the things I liked, the story, I liked the story, it was good and the last thing I liked is the role of Jacob Tremblay, but it went in an another wrong way too!

Now with the things I hated about this movie... I will start with the CGI again, and as I said above the predators in the dark. I didn't notice any drop with the CGI, and of course that's what the crew wanted from us. I guess they were lazy to work hard, so they made them in the night, but then they showed them in the morning, and then I said "Oh, you're capable to make an amazing CGI, but you were just lazy to do it!".

Then let's move to the role of Jacob Tremblay, it was really good at the beginning, but then he actually turned into bad-acting. I hated how they made him insult and all of that stuff, I hated it!!
The performances in general were bad, all of them were less than fine.

I hated the predator dog so much, they made him a pet after a bullet in the head!!!! It bothered me so much!!!

The story was good as I said, but it was so slow, then so fast, it was really awkward!
Because of that, it was boring.

The jokes were trash too, I don't know why they made it at the first place!

The Predator in general is fine, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it too, I just liked it...

I'm gonna give The Predator a B-.. I think it's a good movie, but it depends on what are you expecting to see, and I as expecting to see a movie that it's gonna break the first Predator movie, but unfortunately it didn't!

Thank you, guys as always for reading my review, hope you like, and if you have any comment, just say it.

Despite its cool character design, the Predator has always been saddled with sub-standard films. Believe it or not, this flick is the best sequel since the 1987 original. However, it has several problems. Firstly, despite a pretty good ensemble cast, the main actor is a relatively un-charismatic fellow. The key to a film like this is that you have to believe that this fella can go toe to toe with the Predator and win, using wits, ingenuity and so forth. None of that comes across. Another big problem is its 80's sensibilities, courtesy of Shane Black. Black is the father of the 80's action film, notably the Lethal Weapon series. Yet things are different now here in this era: what can constitute as 'macho posturing' would be interpreted as 'toxic masculinity'. What is considered as cool 80's style gore is considered crass. Hence, it is a film that I do enjoy, but I couldn't disagree with all the ratings that my fellow viewers have given this flick. It is a film that is out of time and outdated. If you got nothing to do, and want a mindless B movie, then this is a great 'streaming' option. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is just so little to like in 'the Predator', and everything it does well is the visuals. The Predator is a simple concept, and the audience for this kind of film just wants simple things: An alien who is an intergalactic hunter for sport or whatever. Yet, they had to throw everything that only troubled the plot, straying from the only reason anyone would ever want to watch this.

Starting by the character of the boy in this movie, it's just wrong. It's just glorifing a disorder. Asperger is not a 'superpower' to make 12yo understand alientech. This felt like a wrong depiction of the condition in a bad way, was silly all the way and required some suspension of disbelief to continue. The fact that the entire plot depends on it so much makes this a bad movie. The entire plot gathers around this more and more, which makes the suspension of disbelief incleasingly harder. By the end of the movie they just added so much unnecessary content that convoluted the plot and disturbed the audience's first motivation so much, that I just preffer to think it to think this movie does not count start with. A giant predator felt so misplaced. It would be so much more more interesting if it was another regular predator. There could much more intense and remarkable scenes between two predator fighting then seeing a giant predator destroy the regular one, effotlessly. It felt lazy and lame. A predator puppy.

It even has the bangs. How can anyone not get out of immersion when there is a predator puppy? With predator bangs for good reason?

And of plain and simple enviromental alarmism out of nowhere (it's defenitely alarmism when you say the world ends in two generations).

Now, Balancing the nice looking predator with these awful aspects, there's almost nothing to keep one's interest. Add to it the all so exausting "last second" cliche taken to exaustion. It breaks the movie for me, really.

Making a predator story is not so hard, you just have to keep it simple, small, localized and broad enough to turn it into a connected universe. It shouldn't make too much out of it in a single installment, it's just predator hunting for prey.

But then suddenly it turned around completely. The humor alone made this movie look like it was made for children ("Get to the choppers" Really?), but the logic was completely messed up as well. Nothing made sense. Predators want to steal autism? What? A boy in his teens just scoffs at naked boobies? I lost the plot completely at the end. Even as a parody it wouldnt have made sense. Complete and utter nonsense. Also cut so fast that you sometimes dont even realize what just happened. Literally. You just sit there with a giant question mark over your head.
I watched The Meg before it and because it at least gave me 3 or 4 chuckles I found it better than The Predator. Yes, this movie is that bad.

I dont know why they destroy all these formerly epic franchises. I cant believe they let people make these movies who have no idea what makes these franchises great or no idea how to write or direct a movie in the first place.
Alien, Terminator, Star Wars, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, etc. They seem to want to rewrite everything great. Like changing history.

Wow, this was embarrassing to watch.

‘The Predator’ is a mishmash of tones with a potty mouth. Really abusing that ‘R’ rating with every chance they get. You know it’s a bad sign when Arnold Schwarzenegger himself turned down the role to star in this movie. I mean, Arnold does not make the boldest choices, but he made the right decision with this one.

Not to say it doesn't have any entertaining moments and colorful characters, who are cartoonish enough to be enjoyable. On a film making side however, it fails to be a movie. The story, editing, and writing is atrocious - Especially the ridiculous story line surrounding the autistic kid and the Predator. Also, the portrayal of disability here is really inaccurate and comes across insulting. Weirdly enough, Shane Black has tourette's.

To be honest, I can’t believe Shane Black directed this. How could you go from “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and ‘The Nice Guys’, then something like this. I can’t fully grasp what Black’s main vision was or what he’s going for. Completely misses the point of the original.

The awesome score is gone and John McTiernan magic touch is needed. Olivia Munn as a scientist? What a joke. Boyd Holbrook is such a boring lead; he just plays tough guy with a gun. Predator Hounds are so useless and a wasted opportunity. ‘Mega Predator’ is just whatever. Not threatening at all.

Overall rating: “You're one ugly ****

If you’re a fan of the original predator, it is fair to say what you want in a new Predator movie is the Predator killing people, action, and grisly violence. This movie gives you all those things, without a doubt. However, where The PredatorIf you’re a fan of the original predator, it is fair to say what you want in a new Predator movie is the Predator killing people, action, and grisly violence. This movie gives you all those things, without a doubt. However, where The Predator suffers is in its pacing, it’s overly chaotic CGI fueled action sequences, and its poor character development. The characters for the most part are likeable, but their character development, or lack thereof, is mostly identifiable by quirks. For example, there is a character who tells jokes, there’s a character that has Tourette’s, and there’s a character that’s a bit creepy. This is all the development we get from these three characters, respectively named Coyle, Baxley, and Nettles. The only characters that have any sort of development are the main character, Quinn Mckenna, and a character named Nebraska Williams, and Quinn’s son, Rory. The action scenes are enjoyable in some parts, but they are mostly overly CGI-d and ridiculous. The only action sequence I was impressed with was the lab action sequence with the Predator. This is because the predator they used in this action sequence was fully practical with makeup and everything and there was little to no CGI used at all. The other, larger predator was completely CGI for all the scenes he was in, and he looked very fake. This completely takes the intimidation factor out for me. The only thing that felt intimidating was, you guessed it, the practical Predator because he looked real and convincing. The dialogue, for the most part, is smartly written and has some memorable lines here or there and a lot of the jokes land, but some don’t. Sometimes, the humor made me laugh out loud, but at a point it got to be a bit too much. Shane Black clearly wanted this Predator movie to have a more light-hearted tone, which is fine, but it felt a bit forced in places. However, Shane Black still displays his talent with dialogue and chemistry here and these are the only things that make me care at all for the characters. The Predator is entertaining for the first two thirds of the movie, but then ultimately devolves into a CGI action-fueled mess that made me wish it hadn’t gone in that direction. The movie’s relentlessly quick pace makes the movie go by quick, but it also feels jumbled as well. Basically, if you are a huge predator fan and you are curious about this movie, go see it, but if you were questioning it, don’t see it. Overall, The Predator is entertaining in many parts, but it is very inconsistent and not executed as well as it could’ve been. The Predator gets a 5/10 Expand

I wanted to love this movie but despite all the violence it’s so goofy that the film can almost feel family friendly . Especially when the smart kid is in so many scenes you’d think you’re watching a Jurassic Park movie. It also makes it predictable that the kid won’t die and his dad will always save him. There’s also a Predator dog that becomes loyal to one of the humans.
So this can almost feel like that they used a fan script. No though, it’s co-written by Shane Black. Who was in the first Predator as the one who tells dirty jokes on Arnold’s team. Here he pretty much wrote every character to be the wise guy and have sleazy one-liners. Which feels one dimensional. While he misses the mark by having tough guy soldiers vs the Predator again. Since this time they are hard to take seriously. It’s like the A-Team vs the Predator. It’s one big buddy comedy. That’s more about the humans than Predators.

Shane Black's "The Predator" may not contain any of the simplicity or subtlety of that masterful first installment, but it does contain a decent amount of the fun, ultimately shaping out to be one of the best "Predator" sequels I've seen yet. Well cast and featuring a bevy of jaw-dropping action scenes, the movie is almost ceaselessly entertaining, save for a few moments where the narrative tread a bit too far into left field for my tastes. Overall, though, it was a noted effort and an unquestionably good time, to say the least. Expand

It then turnsShane Black resurrects Predator to parody the modern blockbuster. It adopts a prominent sense of humor like every major franchise has done and breaks nearly ever rule in the series' mythos to ensure there's never a dull moment. It then turns these conventions on their heads by making the jokes vulgar and sometimes anti-PC, while keeping the action as gory and hyper-violent as any '80s flick. It's the antithesis of the Disney formula. Even going as far as to take shots at the whole concept of Hollywood reviving dormant properties in order to cash-in on nostalgia with its own sarcastic callbacks to the original film.

It does take the joke too far with the ending though. The way it goes about mocking how so many wide-releases set themselves up for sequels by leaving the door open for its own future installments is terrible. It's clear that Black let his inner 12-year-old run wild with this movie. Which is a blast for the majority of its running-time, but that final twist is ridiculous to the point where even thinking about basing a follow-up around the plot device is jumping the shark. Which means the only thing left to do now is either end the series here or have the next movie pretend this one never happened Halloween style. I'd hate to see Predator become the next Sharknado. Some notes:

-The practical effects are great with cool looking spaceships, alien weaponry, and one sweet Predator suit. The CGI however is the worst I've seen since Black Panther, although not quite as bad as those PS2 quality graphics.

- Jacob Tremblay is fantastic in everything.

- That joke about Thomas Jane kind of disappearing from large movie roles is perfect.

- The best part is the final action sequence in the woods as it's a return to the hunter/hunted setup of the previous films and is just thrilling.

- Alfie Allen has like zero screen time. Which is sad because Game of Thrones.

While the future of the franchise has been placed in jeopardy with this installment, this is the gleeful middle finger to the play-it-safe superhero movie establishment that Deadpool and Suicide Squad should have been.

I thought that the acting was fine. This isn't Shakespeare or PBS so I wasn't bothered by the script and the actors did pretty good for what they had to work with. It's science fiction and for a science fiction movie it wasn't terrible.

It's violent, bloody, and there are some cuss words sprinkled throughout. I have never seen the other predator movies and I am not likely to. I gave this film a 6 out of 10.

It's a mindless monster action movie. Sadly, most people are not fans of the creature and there is too much 90's action flick in this to appeal to modern audiences - more focus on action than smooth story line and good acting. Lots of cool predator weapons on display. If you're looking for award winning quality, you will not find it here. I was worried they would try to put too much comedy in this, and I didn't feel that was the case. You won't get some of the comedy if you haven't seen the original with Arnold.
I did like the amount of screen time the creatures got. In past movies, you only got to see glimpses of the Predator through most of the movie until the end when the hero and predator go toe-to-toe. That wasn't the case in this movie, a good amount of screen time where you get to soak in the nerdiness of the predator tech and weapons. I didn't think it was over-the-top like AVP Requiem and the ending hints and some potential future fun. However, it remains to be seen if there is a large enough audience of the franchise for the studio to continue making them; which, saddens me, 'cause I like the predator creature.

I really did like Predators, but I prefer the tone of this film. It matches more of the over-the-top tone of the original and 2. They do add a few more jokes than those two, and a little too many of them have a frat bro/trying-to-be alpha dog mentality that can be a little exhausting. Still overall, it's pretty funny. There are some really impressive and violent fights. Current film technology is utilized to have the Predators do things they couldn't in previous films.

The cast is all-around likable. Heck, I think this is the first time I found Olivia Munn fully utilized in a film.

Admittedly, the pacing can be a little uneven at moments. There are moments where the back-and-forth between characters could've been shorter and the scenes are rushed, including a death of a main character that's bkubj-and-miss. Also, the final scene setting up the sequel feels tacked-on and inorganic.

Listen, if you're not interested in a humorous Predator film than this won't be for you. Personally, I went to be mindlessly entertained, and I was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was plain average and had a stupid plot with many convenient things happening at a convenient time. They should have had more time focused on the first predator instead they killed him off so fast. The woman who is a biologist goes after the predator after seeing him kill a whole room and thinks that she can take it down even though they barely know much about the predator in the end she fails to capture the predator for obvious reasons while hes going on a killing spree murdering trained marines. I didn't even know what was going on half the time and for some reason the characters in the plot knew things that they shouldn't but they do to explain the plot which is "plot knowledge" I guess. The gore and some of the humor is good though to be honest but at some points the CJI on the big predator is stupid ugly. Basically in this movie the best character is the first predator the one with the classic look he has the most character and he is the smartest character in the movie and the funniest it's a shame that he had to endure such horrendous movie. If they would have removed the kid plot reversed the rolls of the predators toned down some of the jokes this could have been a 7/10 maybe a 8/10 if it focused more on the predator the first one as his plot is thrown out the window fast by dying so quickly. Overall though is an average movie if your looking for a movie that is a action horror then this ain't it this is a comedy action movie. Watch this movie if you want to see some people get mauled to death. Expand

People focus on criticising this for couple of reasons and ill try to adress those:
Jokes. Yeah like the first one didnt have those (and literally they came from Shane Black *for those who dont know - he was an actor - Hawkins - in the first one, now hes a director* so the jokes are on same as one of the users said "yo mama" level in this as they were in 1987). There wasnt much horror in the first one (well if You were 7 y old when You first watched, then MAYBE it scared You but then You should realize what was the reason for being scared in the first place - original is not scary to adult now and it couldnt be scary back then - thats one of the main reasons original was pummeled by critics in 87').
Rest of you either complain about poor story but ok action OR ok story but bad action. Same with CG its eihter good or bad. To some of you it adds nothing to lore but others complain that the lore is now broken with predators trying to improve themselves genetically.
Well make up your minds.
I 100% buy this vision. Characters are cool, story actually makes sense and its finally something more than "alien creature kills other beings for fun". Overall it is excellent sci-fi movie, one of the best I have seen in years.

Why should I have to counter-balance the 0 ratings? I can think of some "serious" films that deserve a 0/10 (not indie crap like Sharknado, but legit films that suck), but is this one of them? Not at all. The cast is terrific. Honestly, these are some of my favorite actors and I was so surprised to find Thomas Jane and Olivia Munn here, plus Edward Olmos, Jake Busey (who should do more films). Munn looks stunning. The actors seem very natural in their roles to me, as if they had done quite a few rehearsals. I like that this film feels "real-world" compared to the first two films which were over-the-top Hollywood crap with horrible one-liners (like "stick around") and worse effects. But I enjoy them anyway, right? The third film with Adrien Brody was an interesting side adventure that wasn't as enjoyable as this one. Also, I watched AvP again recently (the 2nd one never happened) and it has aged wonderfully since the release of Prometheus and Covenant, almost canonical, just one or two minor issues like the age of Mr. Weyland. So? Doesn't hurt the mythos, adds to it.

AVP2 is far worse than The Predator. It's a shame so many ignorant reviewers jump on here to rant about one or two minor issues and drop an ugly rating on a decent action film.

7/8 is where this belongs compared with similar films. A harsh critic would drop that down to 5/6 and I'd be okay with that.

Writer/Director Shane Black returns to the Predator franchise and looks to jumpstart the franchise in “The Predator”. Black played Hawkins in the classic original film and has since gone on to find success on the other side of the camera with hits like “Iron Man 3”, “The Nice Guys” and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”. Black has also written many genre action films so his take on the iconic Predator has been eagerly awaited by fans who are eager to see the series get back on track.
The film centers on a crashed Predator ship which is witnessed by an American Sniper on assignment named “McKenna” (Boyd Holbrook). While able to recover artifacts from the crashed ships escape pod, McKenna also sees his team brutally taken out by the pilot and soon finds himself targeted by a secret organization due to his knowledge of the otherworldly guest.
At the same time, a Biologist named Casey (Olivia Munn), is brought to a secret locale where she gets an up close encounter with the ship’s pilot in captivity and learns that a government organization has been tracking the visitors and that their visits have increased in recent years.
At the same time McKenna is ushered off to a bus full of unhinged soldiers who are to be locked away due to their numerous issues. Unbeknownst to his superiors; McKenna has mailed the recovered technology to his son who thanks to being on the Autism Spectrum, is able to figure out aspects of the tech which he believes to be a game.
This all leads to a series of brutal encounters as an enhanced Predator arrives and with two of the deadly creatures on the loose, the unhinged soldiers are largely the best hope humanity has of surviving what is to come.
While aspects of the plot seem a bit muddled and at times a bit to linear; the film for the most part works for what fans want and in many places gives them the sequel they have waited for. There is a lot of humor in the film which reportedly divided early test audiences but the action is as brutal and graphic as one would want and expect from the series.
The film does have some big gaps in logic such as how a Biologist can be so comfy and skilled with Assault Weapons and seems to have no issues throwing herself into combat situations and the larger plot points of the Predator objective is intriguing and will open up much debate amongst fans.
The last third of the film was reshot and you can tell at times how parts seem a bit out of synch from early parts of the film especially in the appearance of some characters whose look changes during the film which clearly indicates when segments of the film were shot.
I know the film will likely divide some fans who do not like the humor and wanted a more evade and survive style plot but Black has crafted an interesting opening chapter which is said to be the first of a planned trilogy. While far from perfect, “The Predator” does give fans some interesting characters and plenty of laughs to go with the action and is a worthy entry into the series as long as you are willing to overlook the issues and enjoy the ride.
3.5 stars out of 5.

The film is filled with quippy, quirky characters, cartoon/video game violence and a Swiss cheese plot that doesn't grate because the film is actually kind of fun.

Shane Black has no clue what-so-ever, the narrative and dialogue is awful. The violence is there in spades. The core group of characters are like the a SNL parody of the original team. The ending is a farce. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it but as much as I love Predator it may be time for Fox to call it a day, in over 30 years they haven't been able to top the original.

I had high hopes for this movie. I am sooo disappointed. Everything about this movie (the acting, the CGI, the plot) was mediocre. I don't understand how can Shane Black miss the mark by so much. This would have been a good DVD movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Entertaining but Dumb and Silly.the story was weak,Visuals and CGI and the modern day setting it was awesome and stunning, the music was good although many times the original themes were used, the acting it was amazing the characters the Soldiers group and the McKenna with his son and his wife and Doc with the A**hole Researcher "Will" they all were engaging and fun to watch. As per action scenes its literally the vibrant and brutal one of all prequels.the fast paced story-line was engaging although story was poor but entertaining except many miss-directions and Over the top and dumb moments, the starting intro and fight was amazing the gadget used by McKenna felt awesome, the Delivery of Predators mask and bracelet to extra-ordinary son of McKenna it felt very dumb but as we know later it was taken unfortunately.the intro to Doc and the whole science lab it was awesome the Predator escape was surprising and the killings it was brutal, the Mckenna's meet with Group and the weird intro to them was literally Funny AF all characters in that group was awesomely hilarious, the chase scene after that and 1st interaction of group and Doc then the Hotel scene was literally Hilarious and then the there team-up for Killing predator it was awesome, the other side the son of Mckenna his brilliance's intro and all it was amazing, the building blast by that kid with the predator mask it was awesome scene and then Everyone joining and the fight in play-ground it was awesome, the intro to Predator hunter and his dog after that was literally awesome and mind-blowing and he's killing of Human like predator was awesome, the discovery of human-like DNA in predator at start it was too quick and it didn't had the impact of surprise, the Predators dog interaction with team was fun,the team and Mckenna's wife meeting was hilariously weird and fun to watch, the father-son bonding scene was sweet and after that the set-up for ending the A**holes entry and mission of finding hidden ship of predator and its unlocking with the help of Jr mckenna it was amazing the conversation of both at that time was clever and awesome, the fight at last between the A**holes team and Mckenna saving his son from them it was engaging the Mckenna's entry with invisible capsule of predator inside ship rescuing his son it was awesome and then the cat and mouse game of both teams it was fun then the predators entry and the conversation in translation it felt like very silly then the fight at last, the sacrifice of two friends in team was amazing and underrated moment and the A**hole's death it was satisfying although the way he died it was very lazy and dumb, the ending ship escape of predator with Mckenna's son and the team stopping it in between that the sacrifice of all other teammates it was like "WTF" it was unnecessary and emotion-less end to them although the ending fight with predator was awesome,The post-credit scene of Predator Killer it was mind-blowing it's a good end,the whole movie had very awesome moments and brutal action with sarcastic comedy and fast-paced runtime it was entertaining but the story and lot of things were dumb and over-the-top it was very silly but its the hilariously entertaining movie! The main issue is the dialogue is pretty banal, and the jokes aren't that funny, and the plot is also slow early on, and the characters are all pretty generic. So....a lot. The 2nd half or so, at least parts of the 2nd half, gets to be more "exciting", but...still bad dialogue, weird directing, and the music also comes in at the worst times, like the iconic music plays a few times in the film, and doesn't even really fit when it plays, and then when it should play, some other generic music plays. Just poorly done from the director and I was shocked to see Shane Black directed it. But..if you really, really, like Predator movies you might like, semi enjoy parts of it and to follow the Predator storyline. My advice: skip ahead to the last 30 minutes or so for a semblance of a Predator movie. (and not a good one either.) 6/10 and thats coming from a fan of the franchise. Expand

Yeah, it lacks the intensity of the OG, the style of the sequel, and the raw minimalism of Prey, but in my book it has the best damn cast of all of them - Predators included (which I think takes itself way too seriously). The more I watch it, the more I find. It's just a really good ensemble and they did a good job with the Upgrade. They even avoid the trap of going all soft because there is a kid with autism. Instead they double down Goonies style. Life is dangerous and everybody can get killed off. Traeger is a really great villain also. I want to see this group tackle more stuff together...unfortunately not possible. Anyways, I don't understand the hate for this flick. I love it and I am loving it more and more each time I watch it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this movie thoroughly I honestly feel this movie is good it's good for the art it's conveying. I want to see more dark horror in the coming Predator films if any. The Predator Killer thing in the storyline is not needed for what Predator needs or hounds, or super predators or any next sci-fi story that strips the Predator's pride in horror. We want to see Predator in terror, something we need to be truly afraid of. Seeing the ultimate predator spit was unpredator. The Predator monster is a creature that enjoys trophy kills and has a mind of a deranged murderer. Predator holding Billy's head and how he sled his finger across his skull is a good example. No more soft Predator films please! The Predator is meant to scare people and that's how it should be used. Expand

It's bad to know that studio is not able to make good Predator movies after first one. This one was an improvement from previous parts but it was not great.

The script and editing had problems. The story is interesting but it was not made perfectly, mainly due to slow pacing and unnecessary scenes. Action is good and you may also enjoy the deaths scenes

Acting and writing was also not that good. They were okay.

Overall, it's 'OK'. It had a lot of potential but the overall product was not upto the mark.
