Cliched and generic action flick which brings nothing new to the table. The only way to enjoy this flick is to completely suspend disbelief. Other than Charlize Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor the acting is awful. Pass on this one.

As action movies go, this is definitely better than the average. We went in with middling expectations and were pleasantly surprised. Would definitely watch 2-4 more of these to get more of the history of how this works and happened, and the well choreographed action. These are the same people who will give the Fast and the Furious a pass on its endlessly stupid dialog. This was better. You’ll be entertained. Feels like this was review bombed, which is unfair to this one. It’s better than average action if that’s what you’re in the mood for. Expand

The concept is interesting, but the plot is pretty weak. We've got a cartoon-evil, mustache-twirling villain, and things get really predictable once you realize that it follows the Woke Hierarchy of Virtue. Honestly, Charlize Theron was very good in it, you had a solid setup for the other main character in your action movie was a woman, and you could've stopped there. But no, black women are morally superior to white women or black men. All white men are evil (unless they're gay). A certain amount of woke doesn't hurt a movie but when you take it to 11 it starts to look like a 1980s after-school special.

Still. Four points for some solid action scenes.

Man, this movie had potential but just didn't live up to it.
I thought they skimmed over the characters backgrounds, would've been way cooler to have a flashback to each of them in their early days, fighting in the crusades, Napolean war etc.

I thought they skimmed over the characters backgrounds, would've been way cooler to have a flashback to each of them in their early days, fighting in the crusades, Napolean war etc. I didn't really like the two Crusader characters, they were totally boring additions to the movie and a bit wimpy looking. Should've gone for more warrior types that used their ancient weapons more, and the fact they had a relationship seemed so 2020 - can just see the director thinking let's add a gay relationship in to modernise it. Nothing against gay relationships, but it didn't add anything to the movie and seemed token.
The movie, didn't flow either seemed a bit all over the place. Obviously they're doing a second movie and I just hope they nail it, as they failed this one.

If you know nothing of the comic novel, as I did, you look at the name of the movie and say; "meh". But The Old Guard is far from being a Meh. This is a very fresh and exhilarating new take on the Greek mythology character " Andromache, the battler of men, or the man battler. Charlize theron is a great actress in this immortal storyline that's takes you to many different regions of the world. I love how they were dynamic in the scenery, a silent character in the movie. A super supporting cast makes this movie a watch again candidate. Why not just watch it and tell my obtuse ass to shut up! Enjoy!

( 72/100 )

Greg Rucka published "The Old Guard" in 2017, and Skydance immediately acquired the rights to produce a live-action of this graphic novel. Premiered in Netflix and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewoods, who capture the public with "Love & Basketball" (2000) and "Beyond The Lights" (2014), now she comes back with a very entertaining movie. Even when there isn't an important photography and cinematography effort because the action happens in a rhythm that doesn't allow visual poetic, the scenery adapts versatilely to the story demands. It doesn't matter the time or the place; the costume design and the production achieves realism in those moments. The source story is very violent and, thanks to the special effects that violence is respected and appreciated achieving a present feeling of danger and edge. Even if there is little CGI, it provides details and realism.
The scrip, also by Greg Rucka, avoids verbal conflict and prefers to create personality with epic phrases about loneliness, destiny, impotence, and willpower. I don't like it, but it's enough to empathize with the characters. The diversity, although somewhat forced, achieves some sensibility with the acting. Charlize Theron manages to give emotional strength with parental sense to her character. But the talent of Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli y Matthias Schoenaerts, as a united team and family, is used only to fight bullets and tell their stories with the few drama that the script allows. Harry Melling is irrational in acting and character, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is invisible and convenient. The script doesn't demand or achieves in the cast a moment of tension or intimate drama. It all relies upon the intensity of the story.
Action cinema sacrifices elements that complement the union between story and public, but "The Old Guard" manages to present an entertaining balance from beginning to end and launch the start of a universe with big potential.

It's competently directed and acted (mostly), but it's marred by cliche dialogue and one-liner philosophizing. It took over an hour for me to care about any of the characters, and even then, there wasn't much to care about. Copley, the ex-CIA operative, was the most nuanced character but had very little screen time.

I'm no fan of big pharma, but I don't like to be bludgeoned over the head with the "big pharma is bad!" message. "Merrick" (an obvious reference to real-life Merck) is the pharma company trying to bottle/sell immortality. Its owner is too cartoonish a villain to be believable. Even Thanos had more humanity than this guy.

The end is an obvious setup for a sequel and/or franchise, but they're gonna have to come up with a much better script for me to be interested in what happens to these people.

What saved this from getting a rating in the red is that the whole affair was competently produced/directed/acted. The fight scenes are well choreographed, and there's a thrilling couple of seconds near the end that involve two people falling out of a window. The material, however, is just lazily written.

Honestly, Booker is the only human character in this, and in the end it bites him in the ass. The action was as usual fast paced John Wick-esque scenes. All round bad movie that I think is getting praise because nothing good is coming out right now.

It has awesome characters, a fascinating plot and an interesting universe. I was hesitant to watch this film, but it exceeded all my expectations and now I can't wait for the sequel.

This is the story of four immortal warriors who have been around the world for centuries. This concept of immortality from a fantasy perspective is one that I haven't seen many movies take on. I thought the plot was original and has a lot of space to expand on with future installments. Charlize Theron was great as always, and I loved the way that they gave all the other characters their own depth and story through flashbacks. Quynh's fate was brutal, I think being trapped like that for so long would be an immortal being's worst nightmare. I am so excited to see how they handle her character in the future.

This movie was such a breath of fresh air after so long without going to the cinema and hearing about delay after delay of great movies. I think the average moviegoer will enjoy this film as much as I did.

I never had a chance to read the comic book this movie is based on, so I basically went blind to see it.

What I can say is that while I find it interesting that the industry is turning its sights to indie comics, they really don't seem interested in reinventing anything for the genre.

Not a problem in itself, but even with this plot of immortal individuals if you knew it was an original story, I don't think at any time you would think it was adapted from a comic book.
Of course, that can be argued considering that 95% of adaptations of a comic book on film or television only involve superheroes.
But it's there where this film is also defined and I say this because to tell you the truth, The Old Guard doesn't have anything remarkable to show.

It's not an openly disappointing action movie, but there's no big moments in it. Even if you take into account the notable names in its cast like Charlize Theron, Matthias Schoenaerts and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

It's a practical movie, yes, but it's also a movie that obviously feels completely tailored for Netflix, because it's clearly the type of release you'll pay attention to over the weekend as it's a novelty on the streaming site, but you'd hardly notice it in theaters.
If that doesn't tell you what kind of movie is waiting for you, well, you may find it more rewarding than me after all.

I didn't even know it was based on something, so I can't really speak to how faithful this movie was to it or not, and I'm not going to try to. What I will say is that it was one of the most generic, formulaic things I've seen Netflix produce, and it boring to boot.

With most creative things, there's the touch of style that gives away who/what made it. Writers have their little quirts, directors have their little touches. The Old Guard stunk with every generic Netflix Original choice imaginable. The cinematography is the same run-of-the-mill style Nexflix employs and all the shaky cam/sped up combat your stomach could handle. The visual rending looks like every other thing they've invested in, the score sounded like the scraps leftover from other Netflix projects, and the script is so generic I was mouthing cliched lines moments before they delivered them.

I turned it off after about 20 minutes because there was no way I was committing to a show about this, and then I noticed it was a movie and gritted my teeth and continued on. I wish it didn't was that time.

Still, it's not something so bad you avoid, but it isn't something you're raring up to enjoy. You've seen this story before: it was called Highlander, and this didn't even get that right!

It's generic, it's borning, there are better things to watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The beginning is actually really cool & enjoyable. I like the concept, but it gets old very quickly. This movie is packed with so many tired & overused cliches it's unbearable. The plot is so dry & predictable I had to stop & take a break from the movie. No disrespect to Kiki Layne, but please make sure your lead actor is actually at that caliber before hiring them to carry a movie. I don't know, it very well might have just been the rudimentary dialogue & Kiki is actually a phenomenal actor. It is honestly hard to tell. The ADR is sloppy & the music is too on the nose. It's easy to tell that the music was chosen specifically because it featured words that described what was happening in the movie, not because the songs actually fit the tone of the moment. If I could give one piece of advice to the creators of this film it would be this, "Show, don't tell". By this I mean that you do not need a character verbally explaining or commenting on every single action. There are plenty scenarios that can visually explain things without a character saying "empty?" Or repeating another character's statement as a question. Also, the whole thing at the end of a movie where "the mentor repeating a phrase to the new kid that they said earlier to hint the kid in on the plan" thing is not only played out, but it made no sense here either. It was a poor call back, & it strategically made no sense. It worked though, because... you know... they're the heroes. Netflix, I'm not mad... I'm just disappointed. Expand

In all their scenes they manage to bring strength, leadership and even sensitivity, showing their humanity, and their concern to maintain that humanity even considering their abilities. The characters are not necessarily innovative, the type of "hero's journey" story has been done over and over again. This can leave the tone of the film cliché, but I believe that this production does not try to focus on this factor necessarily.

The Old Guard is what appears to be an introduction to the group, showing the strengths of each character as well as their weaknesses, their complexity, bringing discussions that could currently be considered clichés or even unnecessary, leaving some doubts about the past of their characters and the limitation of their powers, which leaves opening for a sequence and expansion of the world in which they live, and with great action scenes capable of entertaining anyone.

It isWith more movies constantly being delayed because of the Coronavirus, the only new movies appearing seems to be streaming service movies. The Old Guard is an American superhero (sort of) movie based on the comic book of the same name. It is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood who I'll be honest I am not familiar with and also written by Greg Rucka who wrote the comic book. I was very interested in watching this movie after seeing the first trailer as the premise of immortal badasses sounds very interesting. Plus it has Charlize Theron who is awesome and Chiwetel Ejiofor who has always been great in my opinion.

First things I will praise is the main heroes cast. Charlize is still pretty badass as "Andy" and very convincingly so. The new recruit "Nile Freeman" played by KiKi Layne gives a great performance as a sort of POV character for the viewer. The supporting cast is also pretty good with Matthias Schoenaerts as "Booker" giving a very conflicting emotion to being an immortal, Marwan Kenzari as "Joe" who gives a very memorable speech while being very romantic and Luca Marinelli as "Nicky" who is quite the witty guy. Every single one of them is quite charming and from their performance alone can give the audience a sense of their personality. Most of the actors are also great in these action scenes and it is very obvious that these actors threw themselves into practising these action scenes themselves.

The villains in this movie, however, is something I am quite mixed about. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays one of the villain "James Copley" who is meant to be more sympathetic and there is a great emotional performance from him in the third act, comes out as very predictable and plain. Harry Melling from Harry Potter fame as "Steven Merrick" who is the main villain for the second half comes out as over the top and cartooney which contrasts massively with the others who are more grounded and believable.

The action scenes are very clearly inspired by John Wick and are pretty cool to watch albeit they don't do anything new with it. They are filmed a bit weird with a lot of zooms and sometimes random shaky cam although the shakiness isn't Jason Bourne bad and are still visible. My problem is the lack of action scenes. There are not a lot which is kind of disappointing and the trailer pretty much showed all the action scenes in the movie. The premise with the immortals which is one of the reasons why I wanted to watch the movie is generally pretty good and utilised mostly effectively but no character ever loses a limb which is a shame considering you have immortal characters. The rules of their immortality is a bit iffy and not completely explained which kind of irks me a bit and feels a little bit lazy. The story is something I am also a bit mixed about. The first half of the movie with it about training a new immortal "Nile" is really enjoyable. Seeing the conflict between long time immortal "Andy" and new immortal was great and seeing their different opinions about life was interesting. The emotional moments in the movie are great as well. Seeing "Nile" clash with the fact that she can't even die or age and realising she might not ever see her family again was saddening. "Andy" and "Booker" talking about their heart-wrenching past with flashbacks to help illustrate it as well is genuinely great stuff. As I stated before but "James Copley" gives a believable explanation to his motive that is very sympathetic. If this movie did anything right then it was these emotional moments and fleshing out the characters. However, the second half of this movie feels like a cliche of superhero movies and turns this movie into feeling generic. They now have to take down over the top bad guy dude from Harry Potter and this is where the story takes a large dip for me. My final criticism with the movie has got to be the soundtrack. It sucks. The soundtrack contains a lot of pop songs which kind of took me out of the movie as it tends to contrast with the scene that was happening right now. For example, they play a pop song to build up an action scene and it just feels dumb.

Overall, despite my fair amount of criticism, the movie is okay. It doesn't do anything revolutionary or make me come out of it feeling something or thinking about something but I did still have a good time. The movie premise had great ideas but might have worked a lot better as a TV show in my opinion. Still, it does end with the blatant sequel tease and despite it all, I would be interested in watching a sequel.

A Bunch of immortals go into combat zones without useful gear, and are efficient because of plot armor. Walking through deserts without water or a mask in case of a sandstorm? No problem for these blank slates!

The CIA is after them to extract hormones so that a cosmetics company can sell immortal juice. Then a fifth jelly fish human becomes immortal, and joins this band of uncharismatic catwalk models. For some reason the US Army has full female squads that have a serious lack of testosterone, but add just enough of that 'Let a woman do a man's job' expression, only to **** it up even worse.

Characters can teleport across continents, and have a compass in their brains. Next to that, the "bad guys" are also telepathic as they are able to track a bunch of ghosts with no explanation. And if you are a side character, you are useless and just their to comment on how cool the main characters are. So juvenile. Conversations are hollow, with no believable weight behind them. It's like these people have major insecuritie issues, and need constant acknowledging that they are "good." It reminds me so much of Gemini Man. I hate Gemini Man. Question: Why, if they are immortal, do they keep doing things that get them killed? For a bunch of deadly warriors, they aren't very good at staying alive without convenient immortality. They don't question the higher reason behind their immortality, but instead just kill. What a waste. This movie is the definition of contrived, feminist and lazily written fan fiction. It's just entertaining enough that it will keep you interested in seeing where it ends, but it will make you roll your eyes the entire time. It's a terrible movie. I give it a 3/10.

Charlize Theron's performance was outstanding, she was funny and so cool. The stunt work was exceptional, they were so realistic looking and awesome. The supporting performances were excellent especially from Marwan Kenzari, KiKi Layne, Harry Melling, and Luca Marinelli. The visual effects were phenomenal, the instant healing was so realistic looking and one of the top best instant healing visual effects I have ever seen. The makeup and hairstyling was stupendous especially on Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, and Marwen Kenzari. The costumes were fantastic especially on Charlize Theron. The music choices were perfectly picked for the movie. This was a very entertaining and awesome movie. Expand
