Most anthologies have the framing mechanism simply service the stories they contain: Instead, Spindell weaves each tale into the bigger fabric, like bloody fat quarters making up a gruesome but surprisingly snugly quilt. The thing looks just beautiful, and having the wonderful character actor Clancy Brown as a creepy old mortician “telling” the tales lends it gravitas and ups its cool quotient. But the stories from Spindell, heretofore a maker of short films (including an earlier version of a “story” told here), are wildly uneven in tension, suspense and horror. Read full review

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a solid horror film with fantastic set design, brilliant cinematography, solid acting and a genuinely creepy feel to it. Each of the stories is unique and disturbing in its own right. Unfortunately the ending is sloppy and rushed and much about it makes no sense. Its supposed to end where is began, as we see the small paper boy talking to the new Mortuary keeper, but in the beginning he actually ran away from the house. It doesn't explain what he's actually doing inside there now. So much of it just seems sloppy and rushed. It leaves you puzzled as to why this new person is supposed to make such a valid new candidate for a keeper. All of her stories are similar after all. She kills kids and eats them. Was Montgomery a murderer himself? Is that how he ended up there? How were the burnt children able to climb out of the books and eat her? Why was there a horror film playing that was mirroring the events actually hapenning? Just a cute little gimmick? And young attractive women don't tend to be cannabilistic serial killers. It's like the Director tacked it all on and hoped for the best. It probably all makes sense and someone could explain it to me, but if I'm left confused that's just jarring. It certainly isn't obvious. Still, I loved this film.… Expand

Der Leichenbestatter Montgomery Dark (Clancy Brown) erzählt der jungen Frau Sam (Caitlin Fisher), welche sich für eine Stelle bewirbt, die Geschichten von toten Menschen, wie sie gestorben sind. Es sind insgesamt vier Geschichten, die hier erzählt werden. Die erste Geschichte wird sehr schnell erzählt und findet nur auf einer Toilette statt. Die zweite Geschichte ist die längste der vier und ist vor allem Anfang sehr unangenehm. Die Geschichte wirkt wie eine klischeehafte und unlustige Teenagerkomödie. Als der Student plötzlich schwanger wird, wird die Geschichte interessanter und das Ende dieser Geschichte fand ich heftig. Generell kann man sagen, dass die Geschichten immer ein heftiges Ende haben. Die dritte Geschichte fand ich eigentlich am interessantesten, aber es ist nichts Besonderes passiert. Die Fahrstuhlszene, wo er seine Hochzeit noch einmal sieht, fand ich aber gut gefilmt. Die letzte Geschichte wirke wie eine schlechte Kopie von Michael Myers. Den Twist hatte ich jedoch nicht erwartet und dieser hat mir gefallen. Was mich aber stört, ist, dass das Schauspiel nicht besonders gut und ist meistens durchschnittlich und klischeehaft. Die Geschichten bauen nicht wirklich aufeinander, was ich schön gefunden hätte. Clancy Brown (bekannt als Originalsprecher von Mr. Krabs) ist der beste Darsteller im Film und spielt den gruseligen Leichenbestatter sehr überzeugend. Der Film wirkt so, als ob eine Serie in einen Film umgesetzt wurde. Eine Serie hätte besser gepasst und hätte mehr tiefe den Charakteren gegeben und eine interessante Story.

Am Ende kann man sagen, dass The Mortuary okay ist, mehr aber auch nicht. Das Schauspiel ist nicht überragenden, einige Effekte sehen gut aus, aber auch einige richtig miss. Der Film traut sich auch einiges, was ich erst einmal gut finde, vor allem traut sich die Kamera und Schnittarbeit. Den Film kann man einmal gut gucken, wenn man einen eher trashigen Film schauen möchte.
