The premise being, that we might be living in a simulation ourselves. Also, the fact that it's from 1999, makes it even better, because at that time, the special effects were almost non-existent, and even at this day, you can watch this movie and think it's from 2023, that is unthinkable for any other movie from those times. The characters, the story, the hidden messages, the concept as an all, it's just mind-blowing. Expand

Over 20 years ago, left the theater in complete shock, jaw dropped. To this day, still blown away. Would give it an 11, but they kinda stole a lot of concepts from the 4th act of the book Hyperion... they sure made it their own though.

Directed by the Wachowskis, the film tells the story of Neo, a hacker who discovers that the reality he knows is actually a simulated world controlled by sentient machines. Keanu Reeves delivers a strong performance as Neo, and is supported by a talented cast including Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. The film's unique blend of action, philosophy, and science fiction made it an instant classic, and its impact can still be felt in the genre today. The film also benefits from a memorable soundtrack and a standalone storyline that keeps the focus on the characters and their development. Despite the franchise's subsequent sequels not living up to the original, "The Matrix" remains a must-watch for any sci-fi fan.

Since then I've viewed the film twice but never againWhen I was younger I watched The Matrix directed by the Wachowskis in its entirety and throughly enjoyed it, loving the spectacle of the action scenes and the bizarre, evocative images. Since then I've viewed the film twice but never again experienced the 3rd act. Why? I remember loving the film extremely, so why did I feel so compelled to turn off the television after Morpheus was kidnapped? I believe this is because I believe the 3rd act to the Matrix hasn't aged well. Yes, the effects really hold up and the action is fun to watch but the ending feels so... formulaic and predictable. Although I'm sure it wasn't for the time it came out, I'm not reviewing movies through rose-coloured glasses I'm reviewing them now in 2021 with my current opinions and tastes.

I enjoyed the first two acts however. The set-up is done is an entertaining way, drip feeding us information about the world and the mind-bending concept, drawing us in like a cuttlefish does to their prey. The themes and characters were also enjoyable. I loved how even side-characters like Cypher were given their own complexities, no matter how small. I think Agent Smith made a great villain too, being powerful and menacing as most villains should be but not without moments of depth and even sympathy.

From a technical side this movie is a masterpiece. The distinct green tint when in the matrix and the cool, cold blue tint when in the real world give such flavour. It also has that 2000's era grit and grime, it's hard to explain but it gives The Matrix a definite style. As mentioned, the special effects are stunning with fantastic use of practical effects as well - which I adore. The cinematography is clear, concise and creative as per usual for Bill Pope.

The themes feel very distinct to the time as well with the dangers of technology and fear of technology matching what I'm sure would have been a great worry at the time. It's fun stuff and never throws its messages and themes in your face.

You know what? I wrote this review with a 6/10 in mind but after thinking and writing more about the film I think I'm going to bump that up to an 8. It provides an enjoyable tale with great concepts, characters and special effects. A real classic. And hang what I said earlier, I'm going to finish the film later today. Predictability and formula be damned.

Release Date: April 9, 1999

Runtime: 136 Mins (2 hours 16 Minutes)

Main Storyline: Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you couldn't awaken? How would you know the difference between dream and reality? When a beautiful stranger (Carrie-Anne Moss) leads computer hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence. Neo joins legendary and dangerous rebel warrior Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in the battle to destroy the illusion enslaving humanity.

The Directors: The Wachowski Brothers (Brothers Named Andy and Larry, Now Sisters Named Lilly and Lana) did really cool directing in this movie. He also directed the sequels including “The Matrix Reloaded (2003)”, “The Matrix Revolutions (2003)” and “The Matrix Resurrections (2021)”

The Actors: there cool actors are Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishbourne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Australia’s Hugo Weaving did cool acting like iconic Characters.

It’s a Live-Action Movie

It’s got Action and Sci-Fi in it

I enjoyed watching the movie when I was 9 but it’s really cool

I love this movie because it’s got Cyberpunk style, kung-fu fight scenes and Shooting Sprees. My Favourite Character is Neo because he’s really cool.

This is one of my Favourite movies of all time

I give it 10/10

It is not a film to be seen if people want character depth or relationship depth, with the forced and underdeveloped love subplot between Neo and Trinity being 'The Matrix's' sole weak spot. This ended up not being that huge a problem for me because everything else is so well executed.

Particularly striking about 'The Matrix' is its production values. Simply put, the film looks amazing in its audacious production design, dazzling special effects that are some of the most ultra-cool and imaginative to exist, super slick editing and often jaw dropping cinematography. So much more than a film with ground-breaking special effects and use of camera work that broke boundaries.

Use of sound was also striking, and how the pulsating and hypnotic music score was used. Andy and Larry Wachowski direct adeptly, while the script is an intelligent mix of complex and well-explored themes, mysticism, philosophy and even Lewis Carroll and the story is often invigorating and intensely taut with a smart concept brilliantly done.

Action is superbly shot and edited, and the way it is choreographed is relentlessly intense and breathless in its energy, Kung Fu has rarely been more vertigo-inducing (despite how this sounds, this is not a bad thing as it added hugely to the intensity and paranoia of the story's atmosphere) on film.

Keanu Reeves is in one of his best and most iconic roles and has never looked cooler, certainly has not looked this comfortable for a while before then. Carrie Anne Moss is strong. Even better are an imposingly charismatic Laurence Fishburne (also in one of his best roles), an amusing Joe Pantoliano and a deliciously wicked Hugo Weaving.

Summing up, not one of the best of the genre but a mile-stone nonetheless and a great one. Followed by two sequels, both nowhere near in the same ball-park. 9/10 Bethany Cox

They need to check their brain wires. The concept itself is worth seeing this film, even 100 times if you want. Almost every line is oozing with ambition and curiosity. The action scenes are physics-defying, in a good way as it makes sense, which only elevates the level of entertainment value. The special effects are also mediocre by today's standards. From bullet time to that famous subway fight Neo and Agent Smith, every scene is well-constructed and in the context of the film. Performances are also outstanding, with Keanu's transition from a good-for-nothing hacker to "the one." But the one thing that kept me hooked to the movie was the concept. What a concept! These concepts are like one in a million. And I thank god for greenlighting this project. May projects like Star Wars, MMattrix, Terminator, ALien, etc. continue to be the epitome of the cinema and people stop watching craps like Star Wars: A Force Awakens, Fast and Furious, etc. Expand

The movie is something of a pop culture icon. All the ideas that it spawned are being explored upon today with little to no success (I will talk about all those ideas in detail ahead). I had heard a lot about it so I decided to give it a watch on Prime Video along with its sequels. This movie is phenomenal. The sequels, well, I'll write about them in their reviews. This one is only going to be about the OG movie.

The Matrix asks a question that is being pondered about by 14 year olds to this date - what if the world we live in is just a simulation, and that there was some way to break out of it? Once out of the world, we can go back into it whenever we want, and we can learn everything we possibly can by the use of external storages and practices. The story follows Neo, a hacker who manages to break out of this simulation that we call life and lives outside the Matrix. He was extracted by Morpheus who had given him an option whether he wanted to take the red pill or the blue pill.

Another thing The Matrix is famous for is the action. The heroes - Neo, Trinity, Morpheus and Cypher have learnt all kinds of martial arts, have superpowers and can ask their Nebuchadnezzar programmers to spawn weapons or situations for them. Depending on those they are able to choose how to fight Agent Smith's men, who are something of an equal match for them. There are martial arts fights, gunfights and the iconic bullet dodge scene. The action is the selling point of these movies. And the movie offers them even better than what everyone else explains them to be.

The Matrix is one of, if not my favourite non-superhero action movie. I like its sequel also, but since it's a two part series alongside Revolutions, it's not as good. So I'd recommend you should only watch this one. Skip the other two. This is one of the most iconic action movies ever created and will continue to live on the hype unless someone outdoes them which is actually very difficult. Because it's not common for action movies to have futuristic imagination of action and philosophy at the same time.

It has great gravity defying action, good lore, is philosophical and has a unique style. The movie uses a lot of inspirations to create a unique experience. There is often a debate that the movie stole many ideas and is not that unique because of this. I cant deny that they borrow ideas or lets say were inspired by many sources like for example by “World on a Wire” which is based on the book Simulacron 3 or the “Brain in a vat / jar” thought experiment. However there are unique ideas, improvements compared to the sources and the result is refreshing. At the end I say they use established elements and new ideas to created a unique look, style and experience. Story: After the initial scene that left you puzzled the story follows the hacker Thomas Anderson nicknamed Neo on a journey that turns all his believes and worldviews upside down. His (heroes) journey trough the rabbit hole is breathtakingly awesome for him and the viewer. The story delivers a great experience garnered with twists, surprises, philosophical themes and gorgeous fight scenes. The action scenes are what everyone knows. The camera angle create a never before seen effect that is as stylish as awesome. Since then many have used it in parodies, homages or mixtures of both. The special effects were also top notch and create an immersive feeling. It looks often realistic enough for me to get a disturbing feeling. Actors: We got a great cast of actors for the roles. Lets start with Keanu Reeves as Thomas Anderson aka Neo. He nails his role as hacker, software developer and hero. He can shine and fully deliver all aspects of the role. For Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus and Carrie Ann Moss as Trinity I say the same. They are both an incarnation of coolness, style and badassary (If the last counts as word. If not replace it with awesomness). Both enhance the movie and would deeply be missed. A hidden star is Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith. He becomes one of the most recognized villains in movie history, is truly enjoyable and deeper than it seems at first. The rest of the cast is a good addition to the main actors. Overall this became a hit and I consider it a must see movie of its time. Sadly the prequels fail to recreated this but this is another story or better said review. Bonus knowledge: Do you know that the humans are the bad guys in the franchise? The machines have become sentient and humans start to destroy them. Those that escaped build their cities in remote areas unsuited for humans and want to coexist peacefully. They sent ambassadors to create peaceful relations to the humans. Those were murdered without second thought and they tried to genocide the machines with nuclear attacks. Only after this the machines started a war in self-preservation. It was also the humans who destroyed the biosphere not the machines. Even after the war ended they did not extinct humans and gave them a utopia in the matrix (The first set up of it not the actual one which is shown in the movie). More context is delivered in the “Animatrix”. Expand

The use of CGI is excellent, but that doesn't make up for a bloated, convoluted screenplay.

It changed action sci fi films (and even introduce us to the black coat trend). Action in this film is amazing. From kung fu battle to the shootout and it also has a lot of meaning. Music is also great and helps ou the tone. Effects are great to this day by use of practical and computer effects. This film has interesting world and it leaves a lot to your interpretation. There's a lot of themes about mind, religion, destiny and so for. Acting is good with stand out being Hugo Weawing as Agent Smith (who is a great villain). 3rd act is intense and it helps out Neo's character and exploring the world even more. I love the Neo's arc that is greatly setup and Cypher is an interesting villain. It's not perfect like some people think. Plot is weirdly structured. Lot of the characters aren't really intersting and more bland even Neo who has no personality. Some of supporting characters are cool in concept, but are just here to die. Even Cypher is really wasted character. There's a lot of dumb moments and maybe it takes itself too seriously.
Overall:Characters are weak and film is weirdly structured and it takes itself too seriously but this film still has a great action, music, themes, ideas, effects, world and dialogue which brings this above forgettable action sci fi film and bring it to a new level. Sequels are other story. I think that is kind of overrated but It's still a really good film and very influential one too. It's impressive to say at least.

High concept narrative! Laurence Fishburne! And all of those things should be rightly adored. The Matrix, still to this day, challenges filmmakers to get creative and original, to make something that gets people to think. The cinematography also deserves mention. Using green hues and tints while in the Matrix and blue borders in the real world is extremely well done. The Wachowskis put tons of thought into every shot of this movie, and it shows! The world building is top notch and leaves fans wanting to returns and hear how Neo fares in leading mankind to salvation.
I also find the biblical imagery staggering. It is interesting that Zion is the last haven for mankind and that the ship is Nebuchadnezzar and that the woman who loves Neo is Trinity. There's a lot there to unpack that I think adds an even deeper level of thought to watching this series. Overall, I love the Matrix. I love Keanu's performance, especially, and I love to hate Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith, although I prefer him as a good guy like Elrond. Still, he's fantastic. My only wish is that the other two movies lived up to the bar that this one set!

Obra prima do seculo XX!

And I say it is a classic because I believe it has already achieved this status. I was young when it debuted, but I remember the impact it had and there is no doubt that it left marks.

I will not dwell on describing the story. I just want to say that I find it interesting the way it was developed. It's a good story and it keeps our interest until the end. The weakest part is the romantic plot of Neo and Trinity because the two characters never have any chemistry in the movie. In fact, the movie did not ask for romance. That was the biggest mistake of this movie. The characters have no humanity and look like machines most of the time ... The outfit, with those dark glasses until night and wearing clothes in various shades of black (I loved the cassock they got for Reeves, he could think of being priest if he ever gets tired of being an actor) gives the final touch. It's called "style".

Keanu Reeves is perfect for his character. He is one of those actors I hate because of his lack of dramatic expressiveness, here as in other films he has made. I've seen asses more expressive than his face, sorry for the words but it's the truth. In this movie, he hardly even moves facial muscles. And the other actors (Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss especially) follow the same path. It's called "style"! Luckily for everyone involved, the movie asked for this and it works well on the screen. Fishburne, especially, looks amazing. This is one of his best movies to date, in my opinion.

The production values are extraordinary. In addition to a great soundtrack, we have great special visual and sound effects. Cinematography is one of the best and best achieved I've ever seen in sci-fi movies, and that's no small feat. The camera and film work is excellent.

Okay, I may look a little rough, but I actually liked the movie. The biggest problem (and also one of its most striking features) is having so much "style". Not being a perfect movie, it has cleverly invested in creating a style of its own. Very superlative, here there is permission, even advantage, in overcoming the barriers of credibility and logic. There is no problem in that guy looking like a dancer when he fights. If it looks amazing on the screen, the film allows it, the film wants it. It's not about reality, it's about looking cool. And the film seems cool all the time, to the point that it is sometimes funny. It is no coincidence that the film yielded so many internet memes and humorous parodies.

I was stunned by the visual effects, yet very confused by the plot and the dialogue. This was before we even had Internet access in Egypt. Some years later, fortunately, my brother read the first expalnation of the story online. Once everything became clear, I watched the movie again with the intention of grasping every minute detail; I even read whole parts of the script--this what I also did with 'Fight Club'. Till mow every time I watch the movie I feel that I live in this world, which is controlled by the machines, and I'm one of the story characters who's trying to free humans from slavery. Yes, I can say this movie is my escape from reality--just like the mesmerizing Harry Potter movies. Sometime I feel that the Matrix could be a reality, which could be considered by some people as a bit much, or even crazy, but some things around us allude to this idea. For examples, dreams, and not being able to decide whether you're awake or not, the dream is real or just a dream: the chemicals inside your brain make you believe the dream is a reality. I can positively say, the Matrix is one of the best science-fiction movies I've ever seen. It surpasses every movie in every aspect: the characters, the camerawork, the visual effects, and again, the plot. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys science fiction as much as I do. Expand

From the camera work to the wire work before this film, nothing had been done like this in film before. Also, all the actors trained hard so that most of the time it’s them and not a stunt double which helps with the realism of the situation. The set design and cinematography is well chosen for each location so you fully understand where you are. From having green lighting when in the matrix to blue in the real world helps the viewer to understand the difference between the real world and the matrix. Also the set design and how the real world looks disgusting compared to the real world which looks amazing and way better. This film came out in 1999 and honestly the special effects in this film look way better than some nowadays. The special effects help convince the viewer how the real world is now a dystopian wasteland while shots that took place in the matrix was filmed on location. The acting in this film done by everybody was well cast for their roles and you can easily tell everybody was having a good time and gave it they're all. Nobody feels like they are dragging down this movie and that everybody has a part that is important to the film. But the main four actors you can obviously see they are giving it their all. Whether it be Keanu Reeves playing the main hero or Hugo Weaving playing the main villain you can easily see the character and not the actor. The character growth for Neo and Trinity from the start of the film to the end is there and is amazing to see. The pacing in this film is spectacular and you never feel like anything is slowing the film down. In the end, The Matrix is a classic film that everybody should check out at least once in their life. The best of the trilogy. Absolutely marvelous and genius movie. A true revolution and mind blowing story.

If you have never watched this movie, you are missing something huge.

Weird ass movie, in a weird kinda good way. Some of it (most) did not make sense. But it did make me think and laugh. I can appreciate that.

Really great film.

Besides the kinetic, massively entertaining action sequences and the groundbreaking visual effects, "The Matrix" also boasts an interesting social commentary on "fate vs free will". Not heavy-handed, for sure. Keanu Reeves
Really great film.

Not heavy-handed, for sure. Keanu Reeves delivers a good performance for the most part and Hugo Weaving is awesome as Agent Smith.

Enjoyed the hell out of it.

8/10.
