To be honest I am not a fan of Matt Damon to say the least and I actually feel he is a bit of a hack, but I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott, so much so that I even ardently defend his more negatively reviewed projects. All that being said, I simply can not say anything positive about The Martian. It was two and a half hours of pure boredom. Matt Damon is so unlikable that I literally was rooting against him the entire time.

Every five minutes the film stops to give some long, drawn out science explanation of what's going on and its absolutely yawn provoking. Two and a half hours of this movie formula is better than drinking a half bottle of Nightquil to help induce slumber. It was simply an unpleasant, boring, drawn out movie going experience to me.

Now maybe I am a little jaded due to my strong dislike for Matt Damon, or maybe it has to do with the guy wearing a Man bun who was constantly kicking the back of my seat, but I have to give this movie a big Thumbs down.

Congratulations to the producers, they did an excellent job. Matt Damon was a natural star. I recommend this movie to every Science Fiction fan! It is an adventure, a tense drama and some comedy. All in all it is a beautiful and inspiring story of human nature. I like also all races were included. This movie had my undivided attention from start to finish. Breathtaking and lived up to my expectations totally! I started caring about the characters, I became emotional. I did not read the novel yet but be sure I will be! SEE THIS MOVIE it is so realistic and fantastic. The Martian is a the castaway on an uninhabited planet, it was so wonderful I want everyone to see it at least once!! Expand

The book was amazing, the adaptation had a lot to take from, but could be better. The visuals are good, most of the story is kept, the cast is good enough.
Worth to watch. Bad critics are haters.

Being alive but wounded heIn “The Martian”, botanist astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is presumed dead after a sandstorm on Mars forces the mission to be cancelled and the crew must return to earth, without him or his body. Being alive but wounded he quickly takes care of himself and makes an inventory of what he has food wise and what he has to do to stay alive until the next space mission arrives on Mars four years in the future. Regarding the former he knows there is only a month’s supply but being a botanist he starts working on rationing and possibly growing food with what he has on hand.

Though director Ridley Scott has had success with sci-fi pictures such as “Alien”, and this is very much a picture in that genre, it is more a picture of a man’s will to survive in spite of all the odds against him. We follow Mark through a series of video diaries explaining how he grows potatoes using human waste, exploring ways to get in touch with his crew on the way back to earth or the people at NASA monitoring the mission along with fighting the elements. Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay based on the book by Andy Weir, has a lot of technical talk to relay to the audience and, truthfully, though I didn’t understand 80-90% of what was being said and/or explained I was able to follow and be intrigued what was going on in the film.

With a strong supporting cast of Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mackenzie Davis, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan and a memorable cameo by Donald Glover, strong direction by Scott and many outstanding jobs by the various production personal who will certainly win awards, “The Martian” belongs to Matt Damon.

Damon, as Watney, shows the man’s humor, determination to survive, resourcefulness, not to forget his drawing the audience in wondering if he will make it back to earth. He can depreciate himself while at the same time listing his accomplishments as the first person to do many things in space always keeping the viewers on his side and hoping he will succeed. It is this element of doubt that adds a surprising suspense to the story before the end.

One quibble is that at 2 hours and 20 minutes “The Martian” is about 20 minutes too long. Oh yes a warning---no, not a spoiler--hope you like disco music along with Abba and Gloria Gaynor!

By the way though I saw it in 3D it really isn’t a necessity to appreciating and enjoying this film.

It's a light toned, clever, visually impressive, well acted movie. It's always engaging and you'll never be bored with the outside the box ways Matt Damon adapts to his situation. It's perfectly paced, has a great cast, and is unusually fun for Scott. It really didn't even feel like a Ridley Scott movie, because in terms of mood and tone it's the antithesis of the darkness from Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator... to almost any Scott movie. I don't think it's as good as Alien. I don't think it's as good as the rapturous, and profound Interstellar, but it is one of the best and most enjoyable movies of the year and will go down as another Ridley Scott sci-fi classic. Expand

Loyal to the book and with a cast that makes us wanna be with them forever and ever. Damon works perfectly as the leading character and his struggle to survive alone in Mars for so long time. His charisma and funny lines help us engage with his fight, besides the well written script, which develops naturally and with a good rhythm. At the same time we enjoy his time in Mars, following NADA attempts to help him is also captivating and supporting characters have a great chemistry on screen. All of this make it easy for the audience to connect with the story. Well done Ridley Scott, I've missed you! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to survive and return to Earth.

Based on a best-selling novel by Andy Weir, The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by Drew Goddard. The cast is stacked with Matt Damon as the stranded astronaut, his NASA bosses which includes Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean and Kristen Wig. The rescue crew features Jessica Chastain, Michael Peña and Kate Mara among others. With so many big names, it's amazing how well the characters are portrayed and the amount of time spent is measured just right for each.

As always with Ridley Scott, the visuals are stunning, from the lifeless yet beautiful landscape of Mars, to the high tech rovers and space stations. Still, practical sets and effects aren't ignored. The original musical score flows wonderfully in the background, a touch of 'Alien' here and there.

There are highs and lows, moments of triumph (growing potatoes) and helplessness (the base entrance malfunction and explosion), but overall the film is more feel good adventure than a typical bleak sci-fi drama. The comedic dialogue, not often the case with recent Scott projects, was surprising. Science heavy at times but not too distracting. Tension is regularly relieved by the witty Matt Damon, Ejiofor and his team, even the soundtrack plays it's part with classic disco hits and of course some Ziggy Stardust too. It all results in the runtime of over two hours flying by with it's perfect pacing and by the end of it, i actually wished for a bit more.

However the tone at times became super cheesy, such as the Chinese space agency who come to the rescue with valuable technological assistance, and the eye rolling scene of thousands of people cheering in the streets of England and China during the rescue mission being televised around the globe, it felt silly and odd.

Overall, it's not a masterpiece, but The Martian is an entertaining, weird mix of science and laughs that somehow works well without the need for predictable blockbuster cliches.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A heavily over-hyped film that fails to deliver in any department, except perhaps special effects. The problem is fundamentally due to director Ridley Scott's silly adaptation of a 'nerd thriller' that compromises both scientific authenticity and story-telling charm to create an sci-fi adventure that is neither believable nor entertaining. The film pays serious attention to detail in matters such as food and water supply for The Martian yet depends on an increasingly improbable series of mishaps and 'heroic' acts to move the plot along. Surprisingly corny dialogue, lame soundtrack, forgettable acting by the supporting cast and a succession of action-adventure cliches (including that old stand-by: the kitchen-made bomb for blowing the hatch) confirms Scott's fading reputation in this genre. Let's hope NASA does better when the real thing happens. Expand

And I was right! Maybe I´m a psychic.
Comparisons to Gravity are apt. Not because Gravity is a good movie but because, like Gravity, the Martian has some promise in the first half of the movie before taking a huge dump all over it later on. In both movies I was semi-aggressively rooting for everyone to be blown up and die.
So to the plot we go! Or should I say "the plot".
Astronaut Mark Watney, insufferable, smug wisecrack botanist, gets abandoned on Mars in unrealistic fashion. Already here the plot holes fasten their iron grip on the movie. Rather than anchoring the launch vehicle BEFORE a dust storm hits, which is what any sane person on Mars would do, this suddenly occurs to a particularly alert crew member right in the middle of a giant storm. And by then it is conveniently too late. I can already hear the horn music playing over the American flags here....
As ridiculous as all this is at least we now have Matt Damon stranded on a deserted planet all by his lonesomes. Parade floats for everyone! But even this semi-promising concept is then destroyed in short order. Instead of using this opportunity to explore loneliness and desperation in the film medium, Ridley "the Fraud" Scott has him constantly talking to a video log. And not only is he talking to a video log the entire movie but he is doing a poor stand up comedy routine while making never ending Roger Ramjet inspirational talks to himself. A movie about a man stranded in outer space manages to talk you to death; there should be an Oscar for this alone.
So nonsense nonsense nonsense later and the returning crew who abandoned the comedian on Mars "heroically" decide to make an ad hoc return to Mars to save him. As soon as this happened you knew that nobody would be dying during this insane endeavour because that would make it pointless to return to save one person. Either they all survive and horn music or they all die and violins. And this is Hollywood. They are all going to survive and horn music and we all know it. And what do you know, reclusive geniuses hiding in corners at NASA, blowing up the ship to slow it down and poking holes in a spacesuit to fly through space later and there´s paper throwing at Johnson Space Center, horn music and a farewell inspirational from Roger Ramjet back home on earth and USA USA USA USA USA!!!!!!!
This movie has nothing to elevate it above the Hollywood bilge we keep being flooded with and demonstrates very clearly why American cinema is a dead concept. Hollywood is nothing more than a sh*tpipe, endlessly flooding the world with intellectual poison, and the Martian is a textbook example of it. Awash in political correctness and propaganda it is now apparently impossible for Americans to produce science fiction movies, or any other movies for that matter, of even decent quality. Or in this case pseudo science realism movies, which is even worse. Iranian cinema is now vastly better than American cinema. Have a think about that for a second if you will.
In 1974 John Carpenter made the movie Dark Star. The space monster in this movie was literally a beach ball with hair and feet glued to it. Dark Star is a superb movie compared to the Martian and if you still haven´t been tricked by all the ridiculous hype over this move, go watch Dark Star instead. That´s how bad this is here.

I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!! This would have been a ten times better movie if everyone had died in space. But it´s Hollywood and it´s for degenerate American audiences and you need to have bombs, stupidity and horn music save the world every time or they will all start crying. Ridley Bruckheimer is a giant fraud who should retire to one of his mansions and pack it up. He has not made a good movie since 1979. BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In comparison to the book, the movie is very shallow and its completely ripped off of the core of the story - the desperate will of surviving in deadly environment by a smart scientist.
All the science behind Mark's moves is gone.
All the though processes are gone.
Almost all of engineering done in the story (rebuilding stuff around to buy yourself more time) is gone.
Everything just happens, like Mark was prepared by his NASA training for such a situation - and the most interesting part of the story, which if i remember correctly is something like first 30-40% of the book is just compressed to first 15 minutes. Literally.

As a movie itself - its good. Sceneries are great, view of cosmos is breathtaking. Music is great. Acting is good. It builds the tension even if you totally know the plot. Would definetely tell a casual movie watcher to go and see it. But if you are a little bit of a science geek - just read a book.

And its not 8/10. Not if we are supposed to rate a book in the same 1-10 scale.

The film is at its best at the very beginning, where there is a true feeling of impending doom. But it soon devolves into triteness thanks to poorly written and underutilized characters played by great actors like Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, and Kristen Wiig.

Even Jessica Chastain (as the Hermes mission commander that left Matt Damon's character stranded on Mars) valiantly struggles to deliver lines that the audience saw coming an hour ago.

Although the film manages to be fairly entertaining, it fails to capture the intensity of similar movies like Gravity or Apollo 13--even though the main character is stranded several million miles further away from Earth. It's a disappointing effort for Ridley Scott, who seems much better at directing a fantasy/horror movies situated in space (i.e. - Alien and Prometheus) than the dumbed down quasi-realistic fare that is The Martian.

However, independent of the specified context, 'The Martian' is a spectacular exploration of the admittedly generic but nevertheless magical realm of human perseverance, determination, impartial compassion as well as the fight to exist. Gripping, suspenseful and often surprisingly comical, its character study of Mark Watney is a subterfuge to inspire us, and tell the uplifting story of the will of the human spirit in the face of extreme adversity. The film is oddly light-hearted (for a film that had a person deserted on a planet for years), however, this made for a kind of hunger for a greater range of emotion from our protagonist; one could argue that the uniqueness of the protagonist lies in his ability to withstand the harshest of conditions - yet, this makes for an overall less powerful tale of how bad the conditions really were - how bad things were before they got better. The cinematography of the film often paved the way for many beautiful scenes, but it is trivially easy to take a beautiful shot of outer space, or a planet. The difficult parts of the job lie with mise en scene - the shadows, the frame composition, and the colour palette of the frame. There were few shots that stood out in any of those criteria. In this sense, The Martian lacked a distinct style of its own, which Ridley Scott is often so apt at (refer to 1979's 'Alien'). Furthermore, lightheartedness took the place of gripping, gritty atmosphere, which makes for a less tonally diverse film. The soundtrack is often melodically repetitive and generic, but generally ticks the boxes.
These flaws, however, are small relative to the cinematic experience that this polished blockbuster delivers. Scott continues to deliver, even at the seemingly frail age of 77. I applaud the film as one of the best of 2015 thus far, and highly recommend it to anyone who has not had the pleasure of seeing it.

Thanks to a combination of striking cinematography and stunning Jordanian locations, plus 1st rate production design of everything from costumes and technology to the vehicles and interiors, ‘The Martian’ has a flawless aesthetic in no small part driven by Ridley Scott’s meticulous attention to detail.

The narrative is kept simple and effective but the adaptation from Andy Weir’s novel loses some of the tension and thriller element while retaining its other defining qualities, Matt Damon delivers a compelling but not too dramatic lead performance supported by a strong ensemble cast, with Michael Peña stealing the comedic limelight for his second blockbuster of the year.

Perhaps the most defining element of the film’s success it the abundant humour and self-assured moments of levity in situations which are often stale in traditional sci-fi drama, thanks to a generous sprinkling of comedic moments and a retro soundtrack worked into the narrative, we often felt like we were watching a less flashy ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

Indeed the tone of ‘The Martian’ is somewhat of a departure for Ridley Scott which might be welcome by those who’ve been critical of his recent work but may be an issue for diehard fans, there’s no great tension or sense of real jeopardy, the film always feels optimistic and ultimately ‘The Martian’ is a mildly sentimental but thoroughly engaging tribute to scientific endeavour and an ode to the human spirit of exploration.

The Bottom Line…
A welcome change of pace from Ridley Scott results in a visually stunning and highly enjoyable Sci-fi survival drama with a distinctly comedic edge, perhaps a little lacking in emotional depth and originality, but with a well-executed light tone and solid performances ‘The Martian’ is an engaging space adventure with wide appeal.

The way his character keeps himself positive even during overwhelming odds in which the average Joe would probably lose all hope of survival (on a planet where nothing grows, which Watney himself admits) is extremely enamoring. There is a genuine concern that you feel for the character’s plight. And whenever he achieves something like, being able to establish contact with Earth or grow food, you want to rejoice with him.

The screenplay is brilliant. Usually in these types of movies, people pay to see the stranded guy on the alien planet. And whenever it shifts focus, people tend to turn off and lose interest in whatever is happening. That was NOT the case here. The efforts made by NASA on Earth to help their stranded Astronaut is as interesting to watch as Watney’s exploits on Mars. And all that comes down to a genuinely well written screenplay by Drew Goddard. The dialogues were pretty damn funny and had me in stiches. The material was kept very light without complicating matters a lot but still managed to keep me on edge.

This is a welcome return to form for Ridley Scott. Now I can’t comment on The Counselor or Exodus as I haven’t watched them yet but it is widely known that since American Gangster, he had failed to make a truly great film. This is that great film! An evenly paced, uncomplicated and utterly fun film which proves what Scott is capable of when he’s in his element. The cinematography is beautiful and the CGI is inch perfect. The background score truly is a BACKGROUND score. It doesn’t jarringly blare out and tell you to go “OMG OMG OMG” but complements the visuals perfectly. The 3D aspect of it is brilliant as well. Not since Gravity has a film used 3D this well.

This is a near perfect film. The texts which pop up on screen describing a character or a place were kind of bothersome and unnecessary. The Chinese CNSA cooperating with NASA seemed a bit too convenient and felt like a fantasy on the writers part (maybe he was going for the “Greatness of Human nature during insurmountable odds” but I didn’t really buy it) but that’s just me nitpicking. Go for it. This is a fantastic piece of work. Scott is back. Damon looks to be the man of the moment right now and we may very well have an early contender for Best Actor as well as Best Adapted Screenplay.

The pacingThe acting in this movie is excellent, the zero-gravity special effects are perfect, the design of the equipment and sets are all seemingly perfect as well. You can just about believe that everyone involved is in fact an astronaut. The pacing is good, and keeps you interested, which is fairly difficult for a movie in which so much is just one man against the world; someone definitely learned from Castaway's mistakes and improved on the theme.

Just about the only imperfection is an inexplicable use of an IED to open a door in the movie that leaves you wondering if there was an explanation for why they couldn't just open it some more reasonable and/or sane way, that leaves me wondering if there was actually a valid explanation that got lost in translation from book to movie. Considering the length of the movie, and that this brief setup is the only flaw I can really see... this is a ridiculously well-made movie.

It seems like all we care about is a big name director and big star, then the movie has instant credibility. There was not one truly memorable moment in this movie. I cannot remember a single word, phrase, exchange of dialogue, or turn of event that left a lasting impression. The only positives were Matt Damon's likability and some decent special effects.

For one thing how can this premise be taken ass even remotely plausible? Does anyone think that we would send ship to Mars that is vulnerable to a naturally and regularly occurring storm on Mars? And who would design a ship that is docked so perilously? It was standing up like one of those red/white/blue popsicle rocket treats we used to get from the ice cream man as a kid. Or even more than that it looked like a ship from a 1950's era sci-fi movie. C'mon man, this is a new millennium. Make a ship that is supported as it would be supported on Mars. It should be shorter and more stable, not doomed to tip over like shown in the movie. That one scene lost me for the next 30 minutes.

Here are the other things I feel left me wanting with that movie.
1. When the storm struck I didn't know who was left behind. I knew it was the Matt Damon character but I didn't "know" him, meaning I had no emotional investment in that character.
2. He was a botanist, how convenient. His character didn't have to transform or change in any way in order to survive; he was the perfect guy to be left behind.
3. And just why were the potatoes going to run out??? They said you have 400 and something days, but never said why. Was it because there were other vital nutrients that would be lacking at that point?
4. If you give me 2 years to figure out how to solve a problem that means my survival, and there's nothing else to do but figure it out, I bet I'l find something too. The dates before his food was going to run out were so far out that I never felt a sense of urgency. You can call Mars "The Monster" but it wasn't pursuing the main character, just waiting for him to run out of food. How boring is that???
5. When was the last time we saw nobody but good guys in a movie? There was nobody to blame, no bad guys anywhere. That was just plain weak. A bad guys doesn't have to be a bad person, just a person who either has too much fear or fears the wrong thing, which causes him/her to make poor choices. Nobody served as a villain in any way. I know from playing sports and working in small and large companies that there's always a person who feels like the bad guy, even unintentionally. This movie, with it's little slice of heaven, was absurd to say the least.

For these reasons and other minor reasons I was totally disappointed. My wife liked it and I couldn't understand why. This was the dumbest movie I've seen in a long time. I really wanted to like ti but was terribly disappointed.

Acting - Mark has been left on Mars alone for *a lot of* days and had to survive on himself, yet he is so cold-blooded and resilient, outraging or panicking only once for the whole movie.
Scenario - very predictable, it became boring and just waiting for the moie to end in an hour, absolutely no drama and thrill.
Realism - couldn't make a point on it myself, so I had to use scientific articles discussing the movie, TL;DR semi-true at best.

The high concept novel adaptation had me at hello. Loved the Mars vistas, not so much all the silly dialogue. A big popcorn pleaser like this needs the humor sure, but it went too far here and took away from what could have been a more serious dramatic adventure picture while still being fun and playing some comedy. Not to mention the movie is extremely predictable. Put it this way, I give "Gravity" and "Castaway" each 9 out of 10.
A note on the 3D: while it started off good and in your face, that quickly dissipated as with ALL these big 3D releases that don't push the medium nearly far enough as I complain about on here over and over! Without giving anything away, there's a scene at the end that flat out blows the so obvious tailored use of depth that it's just freaking unbelievable these directors and studio execs still don't get it at this point! Stay 2D if you are afraid to push it! "Gravity" is about the only major movie that did in the last several years! Look, we don't want to wear the stupid glasses for no reason, not to mention paying the 30% up-charge per ticket! You want to be subtle? Ah, that would be called 2D! I saw it via the Dolby process at the DGA in Hollywood, so it wasn't the venue, I can sure as hell tell you that! I bet Zemeckis went for it with "The Walk". Review coming up right here next…

Each movie has their own distinct style and can be enjoyed for different reasons. Of the four, The Martian is probably the most light-hearted and fun to watch, but don't let my words fool you. There are some insanely intense scenes to be found here. Based on the novel of the same name, The Martian is about astronaut Mark Watney who is presumed dead after a violent storm and left behind by the crew. He actually lives and must survive on Mars for months with meager supplies and his own ingenuity. Ridley Scott directed this film, and he was desperately in need of a success after the financial and commercial disappointments of Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Counsler. Luckily, he delivers one of his most spectacular movies to date that's capable of making you laugh and putting you on the edge of your seat. The final act of the film is particularly nail-biting, drawing comparisons to some of Gravity's most terrifying scenes. But what makes The Martian such a hit is its heart. Besides its great humor and amazing characters, it emphasizes the value and integrity of the human spirit. It may not go into the more philosophical implications of those themes too much, but when a movie is this well crafted, that hardly matters. The Martian is up there with the other great sci-fi epics of recent years, and it's certainly one of the best films of the year. Expand

I thought it dragged a little bit too long. "Gravity" didn't have that problem, and to be honest, I found the latter to be more entertaining. I know some people say it's vastly overrated, but I frankly don't think that way. The visuals in that movie were a little better than this one, but "The Martian" is still pretty to look at. Matt Damon is amazing and shows a tremendous devotion to his character. What I like about the character is how he used humor to get him out of a sticky situation. It doesn't feel forced or anything. I wish I could say the same thing to the other characters though. Sometimes the movie would fall into movie conversations that last longer than they should have, and that attempt to make you invested. Science fiction is clearly not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it when the film deserves it. Other nitpicking element I'd like to bring up is the "not so subtle foreshadowing". There was this scene where the NASA president says Damon's character has chances of survival... this of course if something doesn't go horribly wrong, and in the very next scene, what happens? Surprise, surprise, the airlock decompresses and Mark gets himself blown up!

Nevertheless, it was a good movie and one of the better Ridley Scott's offers to date. It may be a little plodding when it comes to pacing, but the rest elements of this picture is sure to thrill.

Final Score: 8/10

The scenario of being stranded on Mars is intense and there is a real tension of how Mark will survive and get home as long as you have neither read the book nor seen the trailers, which show everything. This film is fueled by tension and if you know the outcome that’s gone. What could make the film work though is if the characters were developed but they aren’t. Without the constant sarcastic/humorous narration from Mark Watney the film is all right. Also, gone is the science fiction element as Mark will frequently solve problems without explaining the science behind it. This is the third fall space spectacle film we’ve gotten and its starting to get tiring. When Ridley Scott saw Gravity he should’ve done what Seth did when he saw how similar We’re the Millers was to his idea for Ted 2 and scrap it. The Martian is a conventional film that may satisfy general audiences but lacks anything special. This isn’t any grand comeback for Ridley Scott and all it does is take away attention from the superior page turner book, which is rich with science fiction elements. Expand

Starring a strong ensemble cast of excellent actors who all deliver in their roles, and directed by sci-fi veteran Ridley Scott, the film is technically proficient in all aspects of its production, with high quality visual effects and production design. About the worst that can be said about it is that it feels a little lacking in character background and development; we meet the characters and see what happens to them, but we never really get to know them very well.

All in all, it is a well made, entertaining, and surprisingly family friendly sci-fi film that is well worth a watch.

nb. I saw it in 3D and didn't feel like it added anything to the film.

It's a movie you can stay completely invested in. It's human and just all around fantastic. Minor shortcomings come in the form of some slower moments, but even in these moments the stellar writing takes control and makes it all worthwhile. Even watching Damon actually doing the work necessary to completing his tasks is something I was interested in watching.

It's just an all around excellent movie. One where all of the pieces come together into an intensely likable whole. It's a movie I highly recommend even to the point where I would say it's a must watch. Truly deserving of all the praise it has received.

The teem mate crew who left him for dead goes back while midway to rescue him in a time lengthy trip from Mars to the Earth. A scientific movie that cannot be understood in all its details but that mainly reveals that technology matters and that humans have to keep going trying and thinking. Matt Damone the left behind astronaut is the main actor without in depth acting. Other roles are complementary and coldly performed within a scenario mainly focused on technology without light on someone in particular. It is a worth seeing game of mind and space graphics, though somehow boringly lengthy. Expand

The man has not made a good film since Kingdom of Heaven in 2005, so no way this one will turn out well, right? Wrong and thank God for that. One of the funniest, exciting, and most well crafted, films of the year, The Martian will stand tall amongst the heavy hitters of 2015. Matt Damon is fantastic, as is the entire ensemble cast, namely Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film is brilliantly directed by Ridley Scott who's return to science fiction is most certainly a welcome one, as he manages to perfectly manage the blending of Mark Watney's colorful personality with the hard science, without getting bogged down in the details. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the breathtaking cinematography. The shots taking place on Mars and in the ship are perfection, as are the visual effects, which are truly stunning. One of the best science fiction films of the century, The Martian is an enjoyable, masterfully made, and visually spectacular, film that deserves its praise and will hopefully net some additional recognition for its star, who turns in one of the best performances of his career. Cringefest. The movie is essentially 5 minutes of story lost in a huge pile of SNL-style skits, Heinz ads and footage of cheering people. The worst part is how they took a dump on NASA employees and portrayed them as a bunch of cool kids.

It's an evolutionary improvement over earlier Mars films like Mission to Mars and Red Planet, which lacked this movie's compelling characters and strong script. However, there are several surprising letdowns, particularly coming from a great director like Ridley Scott. There are a few too many comedic moments that rob the dramatic weight from key scenes, particularly at the climax. Watney's joking tone plays well when it's cast as a coping mechanism for the vast problems that he faces, but it takes us out of the moment when he's cracking jokes while others are risking their lives to try and save him. And towards the end Mission Control starts to feel like a gag reel, with them as the butt of every joke. A little more dramatic tension and a little less slapstick would have made this movie great. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Martian is a crowd-pleaser of a movie. Less visually spectacular than its obvious comparator, last year's Gravity, but more intriguingly plotted and engagingly acted. The plot is speculative fiction; none of it seems terribly far from the truth, though I'm sure it can be scientifically dissected. Astronaut on Mars mission gets left behind, people try to save him as he struggles to survive in basically a tent. Self-talk, MacGyvering, and adventure ensue.

There are a few missteps, notably that the Earthbound HQ lies to the astronauts for months to conceal that their comrade survived, which strains credulity and is glossed over. As far as acting, Matt Damon makes for a charismatic everyman hero, and some of the supporting cast are strong, notably Donald Glover and Benedict Wong in fun and surprisingly credible mad scientist roles and Mackenzie Davis as an insightful desk jockey. Jessica Chastain, however, was decidedly overpaid for her bit part (despite claims to the contrary), and the spaceship crew in general are not as strong as the ground crew. Sean Bean is in this movie in another missable bit part and (surprise!) does not die at the end.

This being said, the film manages to cram a complex and technical story into a very watchable and understated couple of hours. There's no reason to see it in 3D, but it's definitely worth seeing at a nice theater.

In this film,Finally, a film about Mars that works! The previous few Mars + Science related films, such as Mission to Mars and Red Planet have been very average due to them coming up with antagonists/ villains that were not quite believable. In this film, the villain is the environment and the limitation of supplies and communications, potentially dull subjects, but the writer and the director have put it together well.

I love how the story invokes quite a bit of science content and present it is an easy to understand manner. The film also got many of the realism right. It has been reported that the storm that is central to the story could not occur on Mars. The film makers should have used a meteor strike instead to generate the 'storm' to eliminate the major unrealistic part of the film. Even so, this film is more realistic and has more story than Gravity. As a result, I think it is better than Gravity.

I do dislike one major part of the film, the part where they needed the Chinese Space Program for help. I would imagine that NASA would look to the Russian Space Program first rather than the less well developed Chinese Program. China only allows 34 foreign films into its market per year., so Hollywood bend over backwards to include a scene where only the Chinese could solve NASA's problem, hence giving the film a leg up into being allowed into the Chinese market. The reward could be hundreds of millions of dollars. The scene is awkward and could have been done better. It happened in Iron Man 3 too, where in the Chinese version, of which the particular scene is available on Youtube, only a Chinese surgeon is expert enough to remove the shrapnel from Stark's chest. It's stupid and it make the naive and self-important Chinese citizens accept the Chinese government propaganda that their country is so great at this moment.

Who would think the film is great? Most people of all ages, particularly those who like science.
Who would think the film is only so-so? Those who prefer a faster-paced film. The film is a bit slow.
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

The US PG-13 rating of the film should be due to a short scene involving trauma surgery. Blocking it from the children should enable them to enjoy the rest of the inspirational film.

Score: 4/5 (No half score). It' worth to pay to watch it in the cinemas.

It is Ridley Scotts best film in a while. The legendary directors recent films have been mostly forgettable, but The Martian is an easy addition to his list of classics. The film is so well directed and the visuals are outstanding all of the scenes on Mars are very neat to see especially in 3D. I was completely sold by the look and I don’t think it could’ve been any more real. Matt Damon also gets some redemption in this film after a couple years of performing in average films like the Monuments Men and Elysium. Damon offers his best performance in at least the last 5 years in this movie. His character is certainly a smart one but there is a normal person in there and when you watch him you can almost see yourself in his shoes. His role is also just altogether fun, this is a good movie but it is also a fun movie which does not always happen.

The whole cast really shines here and the whole supporting cast is rounded out with big names. Chiwetel Ejiofor is great in this movie. Its nice to see him in a good role as he has been quiet after his strong role in 12 Years a Slave. Jeff Daniels and Jessica Chastain are great as well and I know there was some worried about similarities to last years blockbuster Interstellar and I’m happy to say that this film really has its own identity despite having some of the same actors involved. I think I still enjoy Interstellar more but this is certainly a film worth watching.

What I liked about the film was that, unlike the book, it had more
gravitas. You felt the seriousness of Mark Watney's situation. It had
more emotion and more human character. The film also had less swearing
and crude humour, and I never thought that I would ever be saying that
about a book.

But the film also inherited some of the books flaws. My biggest dislike
is that it lacked a sense of time. You didn't feel just how very long
he'd spent on Mars, you were just told that. And I think too much time
was spent back on Earth and it really took away from the sense of
isolation that should have been there.

My final big flaw is the uneveness of the film. I didn't like the
beginning of the film as it felt rushed and they were just cramming
everything in. The ending however I loved. It was exciting, nerve
racking and everything you'd want out of a movie like this.

Matt Damon did a great job in correctly portraying everything that was
likable about Mark Watney. And it's just nice to see a smart person
that isn't another House-esque smug, arrogant Genius. The rest of the
actors did a good job as well.

Overall I think I liked this movie better than the book. It's very
recommendable.

The plot of TheAfter the highly successful 'Space Odysseys' from Alfonso Cuarón and Christopher Nolan in the form of Gravity and Interstellar, Director Ridley Scott made an unimaginable yet convincing attempt in the form of 'The Martian'. The plot of The Martian got revealed from the poster itself, "Bring Him Home" where one can understand that the lead character got stuck on the Red Planet "Mars" and the intelligents in NASA tries to get him back. Lead Character "Mark Watney" played by Matt Damon is a treat to watch. Mark is a Astronaut who's indeed a Botanist and Chemist totally we can call Scientist. His hardships on the planet Mars makes the movie a horrific thriller with essence of his comedy timing. Mainly in 3D one can really feel the presence of Mars just at a distance of his eyesight. This credit goes to the Cinematography and VFX department who has really done a wonderful job. The Martian is a great attempt from Ridley Scott after Oscar winning Gladiator. The only confusing element in the movie is 'Time', where one can feel some logics are missing but the humorous part in the movie is Mark got survived on the Mars only by potatoes. Apart from Interstellar and Gravity, Martian gives us a fresh feel, who knows in the near future it may be our home. Expand

You can slap Ridley Scott's name on anything and everyone (including me) will go see it. It's so awesome that you still can go to the cinema today and see a new film directed by the guy who brought us Alien, now that's freaking awesome. But Ridley can be a hit or miss with the movies that he's releasing recently such as: Robin Hood, The Counselor and Exodus: Gods and Kings, but Prometheus (In my opinion) was pretty good and I know a lot of people may not like that movie and that's okay if you didn't like it, but I did. When I first heard about The Martian being directed by Ridley Scott, I was exciting but nervous at the same time, because as I said before about Ridley being a mix bag recently. But I kept a positive and open mind, I mean this might be the film that Ridley Scott finally went back to he's roots from the good old days.

After seeing The Martian on my first viewing I liked it, but I wasn't amazed by it. It's not until the movie actually started to grow on me as I thought about it more and more, and now after thinking about it for awhile now, I can safely say that The Martian is a great movie. Ridley Scott's back everyone.

Matt Damon plays Mark Watney brilliantly in this movie and this might actually be the best performance I've seen from Damon. He's hilarious, always positive and never gives up even when a lot of things don't go quite as planned, he always finds away. I also love how Damon's character can crack a joke there and then even when he's in this horrible situation; and to me it made he's character more relatable and likable. This is Matt Damon finest work as he was terrific in this movie.

Ridley Scott's directing in this movie was absolutely magnificent and this has to be one of he's best films in years. The movie isn't all hilarious as there were some real suspenseful scenes in this movie, but what I thought was so brilliantly well done is that Ridley Scott mixed the humor and the suspense perfectly together. Nicely done Ridley.

The rest of cast: Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ekiofor were all freaking great in this movie. Everyone in this movie was great.

The writing has to be the biggest strength in this whole movie, because it was clever, funny, never lost me attention and it had a fantastic sense of humor to itself. It matched the tone of the movie perfectly as I felt that The Martian needed this type of tone.

Now for the problems: My only flaw in this movie is this 25 minute sequence where it cuts back to earth with the NASA crew talking about different ways of bringing Mark back, but the stuff on Mars was more interesting. I'm not saying it was bad as the earth stuff scene was handled well and it was very well acted, but I was more interested on the stuff that was happening on Mars with Damon's character.

Overall The Martian is absolutely worth checking out. This is Ridley Scott's and Matt Damon's best work in years. It's beautifully shot, well acted and a entertaining movie.

Now lets attend back to my hard on for Mr.Scott. One thing you can always expect when walking into a Ridley Scott film is that it will be visually stunning, and this film is GORGOUS. Mars is a character of its own in this film like Mount Everest is to "Everest". The planet looks like the coolest sandbox you'll ever visit and probably had people checking Expedia for one way trips. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that i they try and tie in his parents at one point late in the film and i just wish there was more to that. His parents seem to be the only family he has on earth and i believe that if they were able to just touch on their relationship just a bit more then that would add a scoop of give a **** for the viewers. I seriously loved this movie, the performances are all very great, especially Matt Damon who gives the performance of a lifetime. He seems very much committed to the role and he is full of emotion that equals to a great and Oscar-worthy performance.
Ridley Scott does an incredible job here with the way that he decides to take on the story and also the ending is just brilliant and very well directed.
The score by Harry Gregson-Williams is also very haunting and memorable but what stands out the most here is the incredibly amazing cinematography by Dariusz Wolski.

I was really hyped up about the film given the reviews of humor and smartness. The film really handled the jokes very well, and at times could of extended to a R-Rated movie. Also, I really enjoyed the first half of the movie. But that was about it... The last part really seemed to drag until its final act, and it really disappointed me during the last half excluding the ending. The ending was great though, and I felt like if the movie had just ended at 1 hr. 31 min. like Gravity did, it would have been a lot better. However considering that, this film was much better than Interstellar, and you might like it or not. It really depends on your tolerance for really long space movies. Also, I was surprised by the amount of people in my theater:

A slow start just like the book a little tech heavy with basic math Zzz. 30 minute blocks slow/ 100 percent better/ 50% lower / 100 % better...Watchable

Excellent film, after reading the book, they have managed to put most of what was written into the movie, including many of the funny parts which made me laugh out loud when I was reading the book. Well cast and well acted by Matt Damon.

A brilliant performance by Matt Damon and a terrific adaptation of the best-selling book by Andy Weir, The Martian is powerful, impactful, witty, and hilarious all at the same time.

Great cinematography, gripping special effects, and an interesting story with engaging characters. If you've ever watched Gravity, it's like that with Matt Damon on Mars.

Smart movie, I've loved Damon's organisation, deduction and his force of surviving in every way. Great interpretation and good idea. I didn't like the ending, it's too fast, and too much prevedible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Space fans are being spoiled nowadays, what with Gravity (2013), Interstellar (2014) and now The Martian (2015) coming to the cinema. I liked Gravity because it felt close to reality, while Interstellar was more of a sci-fi movie with in my opinion too much emotional drivel. So how is The Martian then?

Visually this movie can be compared with the movie Gravity. The views on the planet Mars are spectacular and almost everything that happens feels realistic, except for the ending of the movie. The disco music, ABBA, David Bowie... is a nice touch because it clashes so much with the setting on an alien planet far away in space.

The main thing this movie is missing though, is some psychological tension. After a big sandstorm astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars by his crew, yet all he does (after taking care of his belly wound by operating on himself) is immediately putting his thinking cap on and finding these smart solutions. There is no panic or fear whatsoever to be detected in him. he just feels confident as ever and starts the first potatoe farm on Mars.

This makes the viewer less involved emotionally and there's never any doubt that Watney will make it in the end. The constant switching from the planet Mars to earth, where the people of NASA are working on a solution to get Mark Watney back, takes away any feeling of abandonment or solitude of a man being left alone on another planet.

The Martian has a positive vibe and it's nice to have some comic relief in the story. As soon as I saw Kristen Wiig from Saturday Night Life and Jeff Daniels from Dumb and Dumber, I was waiting for them to start making comical faces and talking with a silly voice. But luckily it didn't get that far!

Matt Damon as Mark Watney is his usual dullness. I could never appreciate him much as an actor, it seems he can only do the typical american action hero boy and he has only one facial expression. Just as in Saving Private Ryan (1998) he has no emotional reach: "Oh my brothers died? That sucks... well, back to business I guess. Let's kill some german soldiers!"

The Martian is not a bad movie by any means and can be enjoyed as a light hearted family movie. I rate it 7 out of 10.

A wind storm destroys Matt Damon's shelter on Mars. Really?! After they make a big deal about the lack of an atmosphere and his struggle to make air. Only his acting ability carries this dog past the finish line, but only barely.

The movie is fantastic but it felt so extremely rushed to fit everything into the 2 hour time slot. The characters had the potential to be so much deeper (as they are in the book) and the limited time to tell this story left even the main protagonist, Mark Watney, with what seemed like an untold story. Nobody does it anymore but this would have been perfect for a 3 or 4 part miniseries on TV as the flushing out of the characters and their struggles could have been so much more profound. That said the movie stuck very close to the book for the most part and I love the use of real science behind everything. Overall a good movie but left me wanting so much more, I wouldn't have cared if they extended it an hour and made it an epic long movie it would be worth it. Expand

The Martian is an inspiring, interesting and really enjoyable movie.

Ridley Scott knocked it out of the park with this movie, the cinematography is phenomenal, Matt Damon gives one of his best performances to date, I was skeptical going into this movie as I thought "how could this movie be any good if I'm watching one guy on his own, talking to no one but himself (like tarzan) be any good?" I was wrong, it wasn't like Tarzan, yes I know it's a terrible pun/joke.

Mark Watney is a **** idol in this movie, when people say "he makes the best out of a bad situation" they're not joshing you he is truly inspiring and I'd rather more characters like him in movies rather than the ones that always get depressed about midway through because of something happening or something they've done, and have this over indulgent crying scene, I don't care about that **** I'd rather a movie that is fun, instead of ones that have a **** ton of crying in them.

This movie is impeccable, it's not perfect by all means, I got a little annoyed by the fact it had to cut forward at the end, (you'll understand if you've seen it) but I see why they did it. Overall I really enjoyed this movie, a great break from those depressed characters we get in every single movie about surviving.. This movie made me want to get the book, in fact, next time i go into a store, I'm going to go into the book shop and buy this book. I loved the movie, sure it has a few problems but I have enjoyed this far more than any other movie I had seen since the Imitation Game.

In my opinion this movie should get a nomination for best picture and I honest to god believe at this moment in time, it should get it.
