I get that China's state version of NASA would have scientists that wanted to help for pure science sake. I was not however convinced that the CCP would let them? Unless to own the Amercians which was never ever mentioned. Could of been a near perfect film without the confusing China motivation stuff.… Expand

The Martian is a solid sci-fi movie, brilliantly directed by the great Ridley Scott, who once again returns to science fiction.

This is probably the most realistic sci-fi film I've ever watched, since is based on a book by the same name, written by Andy Weir, who studied for a long time to make it as realistic as possibile.
It has an outstanding cast and Matt Damon performance as astronaut Mark Watney is truly terrific.
If you're looking for a more realistic and down-to-earth sci-fi movie, definitely watch The Martian.… Expand

On paper, this film sounds boring; on screen, ruddy amazing. The character building was done really well and it shows us what humans dream of doing in the future. (Going to mars, not getting stuck on it. Tho we will never leave Earth permanently).

Awesome movie, one of the best in 2015. Matt Damon is shining at humor, the film is thrilling in every single minute, and Mars is a great place to a film, you know? The more down-to-earth style of the film somehow makes it even better and funnier.

I don’t get the love for this movie, the book I get cause I’m a big fan but this adaptation is pretty terrible. Another movie in which Matt Damon must be saved. :)))

In light of the recent productions, this is by far the most plausible sci-fi movie produced in the past years. Deserves a 5. Still miles away from Kubrick's 2001.

It's a pretty clever film and so easy to understand. Considering that this is a sci-fi film directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus,...), is appreciated that develops in a more comical way, but justly stabilized with theIt's a pretty clever film and so easy to understand. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a science fiction and adventure drama film, with themes covered including exploration, peril, hope and mutiny. Its fairly slow paced (understandably so, I thought), with some good visual effects - I imagine this would have been quite impressive if viewed at the cinema - it certainly looked impressive on my smaller TV screen. It is fairly immersive and thus atmospheric as well. I liked how the viewer sees things from time to time from the in-built space capsule's camera, as if viewing his activities from a cold and scientific type of viewpoint.

Some of the music used is pretty space-y, new age style at times, while other music tracks are very much retro disco in style (believe it or not). That aside, the film definitely has quite a futuristic feel - you could argue that the selfish element of the plot is sadly reminiscent of current society, given how much emphasis people often put on themselves (often, not always of course). I thought it did have a surprisingly uplifting element to itself and its fair to say that the fragility of humanity, of life and so on is quite well put across. There are also quite sobre aspects of the plots, possibly not the ones you may expect, I wouldn't want to provide spoilers but lets say that sadly too much emphasis is put on public relations. I'd go so far as to say its somewhat thought provoking.

Cast wise, Matt Damon plays Mark Watney, the astronaut aka 'man left behind'. He comes across as very knowledgable and with a quite scientific mind but also headstrong and determined to do all he can to increase his chances of being re-discovered. I found myself feeling quite sorry for him, for obvious reasons and hoping for a good outcome. Other members of his team include Melissa Lewis, played by Jessica Chastain, Annie Montrose played by Kristen Wiig. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Vincent Kapoor, who works for NASA as the director of the mission Mark is involved in, while Sean Bean plays Mitch Henderson and Jeff Daniels plays Teddy Sanders, NASA's Chief Director. The cast played their roles well - I thought it was well cast.

Content wise, there are some instances of mild innuendo's and mild to moderate profanities and there are some ocassional scenes featuring injuries, with a bit of blood shown but no very graphic detail present. Some scenes obviously feature an element of peril and threat, which younger viewers (predominantly children) may find somewhat frightening or disturbing but otherwise there's nothing obviously likely to disturb or upset people. Due to this content, the film has been given a 12 rating.

Normally I'm not very keen on sci-fi type films, especially if its predominantly set in space but I found this surprisingly watchable as I was curious to see what the ultimate outcome would be for Mark. It definitely does have somewhat a sterile feel to it but I felt it worked in its favour somehow. Oh yes and of course a certain Mr Bowie does also feature in the soundtrack, although perhaps not quite the song you might expect.

Yes I would recommend this film as I felt Matt Damon did well in portraying an interesting character and while the plot is far from entirely original, I felt it featured decent visual effects and it did well at portraying humanity, the fragility of it in a somewhat sterile setting or way. Its hard to explain precisely but I found it surprisingly watchable and quite engrossing and I suppose it is potentially quite thought provoking, so I'd recommend it on that basis.… Expand

The Martian benefits from being the product of Andy Weir's truly excellent novel, which in itself was the product of years of research to ensure the story was as scientifically plausible as possible. That really shows in the movie, as believable problems continue to arise and the creativity of people works to come up with solutions to the situation of how to safely bring home a single man stranded on Mars with scant resources.

Easily one of the best Ridley Scott movies, this movie delivers a beautiful blend of wonderful Mars vistas and an excellent score, with lots of humour from the main character, Mark Watney, who is ideally played by Matt Damon with a stoic continuous sense of humour throughout the challenges as he breaks the wall and talks to the audience throughout in the for of video diary entries.

Gripping, lots of really excellent supporting cast with developed characters. I have found myself coming back to re-watch The Martian countless times in the years since its release. I think that's because the story is uplifting and positive, combined with an inspirational glimpse into the potential near future of Mankind as we step forward to becoming a multi-planetary species. If you love a good sci-fi movie, look no further than The Martian, it's in the top 5 of the last decade in my opinion, and crafted by a legendary director.… Expand

I confess that I was not very impressed with this film. Presented as a space drama, I thought it would be something more tense than it is. And although it was also advertised as a scientifically accurate and credible, I confess that I was notI confess that I was not very impressed with this film. And although it was also advertised as a scientifically accurate and credible, I confess that I was not very convinced, but I will not discuss it either.

This film has a simple script: in the future, a mission manages to set up a space base on Mars, but has to retreat in haste when a heavy storm catches them by surprise. During the withdrawal, one of the elements is picked up by debris and disappears. However, he survives and begins to rebuild the base and try to stay alive and communicate with Earth where, however, and by chance, they discover he is alive. After some communications, NASA decides that the remaining elements of the expedition, already on their way to Earth, have the right to know what is going on and to take part, if they wish, in the effort to rescue him.

Ridley Scott doesn't seem like a competent director for a film like this. I think it gave the film a tone too light, removing drama and tension. There are some moments, closer to the end, when he still tries to reverse it, but he can't and the climax is bad, although the film ends up decently entertaining us. Growing potatoes on Martian soil is something that would never have crossed my mind. I don't know how easily it would work, even if it is possible. Surviving in inhospitable places is never easy, especially for someone who has never had to, and if that is valid in our world, it would be even more valid on a strange planet. Ignoring all this, based on a theory and forgetting how difficult it is to put into practice, the film makes everything easy to do and, instead of a tense life or death situation, gives us a vacation in a Scout camp on Mars. Oh, and it is obvious that China, a dictatorship led by a madman with ambitions to control the world in the same way that he controls the life and freedom of his people, had to appear and show how, at the right time, it is capable of saving everyone and being essential to democratic countries.

The cast's work is quite good. Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain are the main protagonists of this film and have put a lot of effort into their characters. This is quite obvious, and to be expected from two talented actors as they have proven themselves to be. Matt Damon, in particular, impresses his character with sympathy and seems to be a kind of "our friendly neighbor". Sean Bean also shone in his role, and makes a good counterpoint to the character of Jeff Daniels, who excels at the arduous task of becoming an obnoxious NASA director; Donald Glover, Kristen Wiig, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan and even Chiwetel Ejiofor made a positive contribution, but the film is not theirs to shine.

Technically, the film is extraordinary and had a budget to bet high. So what we have is an extraordinarily realistic set, costumes and props, combined with superb cinematography, where Mars looks beautiful, sharp and convincing. All the visual effects and CGI are good and combine very well with the rest. The soundtrack is within the expectations, in a film that does not seem to be taken seriously.… Expand

Although Matt Damon shares more screen time than Tom Hanks did, The Martian is very much Castaway in space with much of the movies focus on Watney’s attempts to survive against all the odds. As one would expect Damon does a great job in the lead role, managing to infuse his character with enough charm (and humour) to make the audience care about his plight. In fact, despite the grand scenery this is very much a character based movie and in that regard it largely succeeds even if it’s never quite going to be considered as an all time classic.… Expand

I was expecting more from this movie. It was directed by the famous Ridley Scott but he was not able to give what we were expecting. It's so frustrating when so many people like and praise a movie that really doesn't deserve it.

There are so many non-sensical depictions of the physics of space travel. The script seems written more by market researchers than a screenwriter. The pacing is not good. Film slows down at many points and is unnessarily stretched. It could have been shorter, it didn't deserve 2hr 30min runtime. Matt Demon's performance and special effects were good. Only, these two things were good in the whole movie.

Overall, I am not saying that it is a bad movie but it had a lot of potential and could have been made better.

The Martian é um dos melhores entretenimentos do gênero.

Tem um elenco maravilhoso, com o Matt Damon entregando uma ótima performance. Um roteiro muito bem escrito, com propostas inteligentes e que convencem, sem parecer muito forçado ou atéThe Martian é um dos melhores entretenimentos do gênero.

Um roteiro muito bem escrito, com propostas inteligentes e que convencem, sem parecer muito forçado ou até mesmo viajado, o que é um ponto muito positivo pois acompanhar alguém inteligente é muito satisfatório. É claro que o filme abusa um pouco de arquétipos, principalmente no personagem do Donald Glover, que eu acredito estar lá só por conta da visibilidade, mas qualquer forma, o ritmo é fenomenal, propondo diversas cenas cômicas, de descobrimento e até mesmo tensas, o que me fez deixar de ser um pouco chato dessa vez.

A atmosfera de marte é muito boa. Poderia ser mais imersiva, quanto ao calor e vazio, mas talvez fugisse um pouco da proposta, que é nos divertir, e nisso ele funciona muito bem - eu, pelo menos, dei muita risada. Enfim, a fotografia se aproveita bastante do tom quente no deserto e com uma paleta de cores mais clean na "base" ou na nave, o que dá um ótimo contraste entre condições. Alguns planos abertos são verdadeiras pinturas e o HDR acrescenta muito nessa obra. A OST está presente em diversos momentos e dá o peso que o momento precisa. A soundtrack, de acordo com meu gosto musical, não poderia ser melhor, com musicas clássicas que simplesmente nos animam só de escutá-las.

The Martian é divertido, inteligente, conta com um ótimo elenco, e mesmo forçando a barra em um estereotipo ou outro, funciona muito bem como um todo.

I never get tired of this movie.

The humor, the soundrtack, The performances, the positivy. It just makes me feel really happy. A movie about a man stuck alone on a desert planet could have easily been a depressing downer. Instead, this isI never get tired of this movie.

Scifi with some laughs and a heart for a change. Avoids the pretentious self-importance of many recent scifi films like Interstellar. A good story and well directed, with a really upbeat and inspiring end credits sequence set to "LoveScifi with some laughs and a heart for a change. A good story and well directed, with a really upbeat and inspiring end credits sequence set to "Love Train", which wraps it up on a high note, shows us all the characters again, and leaves us with a good vibe - one of the best end sequences in cinema imho.

Points for daring to lay in 70s disco and 80s pop as the main soundtrack - helps to keep a light mood and avoid the dreaded heavy pretentious quality of so much sci fi.

Points off for some very thin and weak science that breaks credibility several times -- esp. during the final pickup when he magically flies around like Iron Man using just a little whiff of escaping air from his spacesuit. Come on! The screenwriter ran out of ideas at 3 AM. This is where the director has to step in and take control -- find a better way.

Watney misses his big moment when he finally gets a chance to send a message back to Earth. He should have sent, "SEND - EARTH - WOMEN" -- cut to the next scene, mission control telling him they got 172,000 volunteers.… Expand

Cringefest. The movie is essentially 5 minutes of story lost in a huge pile of SNL-style skits, Heinz ads and footage of cheering people. The worst part is how they took a dump on NASA employees and portrayed them as a bunch of cool kids.

The man is one of the best - if not the best visual storytellers in the business. At least he's made money. The Martian is a superior science fiction tale about a lone astronaut (Matt Damon) unwittingly left behind by his loyal crew after a mission to Mars. While Moon and Gravity succeeded with effectively a single player (sorry George) The Martian adds another storyline which includes NASA and Damon's crew - now on a mission at an impossible distance from where Damon resides. The added storyline adds to his isolation and Damon is utterly endearing as a man who will stop at nothing to survive. Gripping, funny, beautiful to look at and ultimately extremely moving - The Martian is THE film of the year bar none.… Expand

Est un excellent film de science-fiction qui raconte l’histoire d'un astronaute perdu.
Même si le film ne respecte pas l'environnement véritable de Mars le ressenti devant le film est envahissant. Ce film est beau, ce film!! Seul sur Mars !!

Des musiques géniales tout simplement une belle qualité
Un Dolby Atmos discret.
Un aspect plus réaliste qu'il manquer à Intestellar.
Bref, courez dans les salles obscures pour un Robinson Cruzoé avec MATT DAMON sur MARS… Expand

Let's do the critic here. :) F****** hate this Matt Damon guy. So annoying proudly face, that I want to punch. I will never know why they choose him in potential movies. Anyways, if the protagonist was played by different actor like Matthew McConaughey (who have already proofed, that he can make it in space :D) or DiCaprio (who we see can beat even the nature in The Relevant :D). This guy will be good for a role of gym maniac, who is training all day long and is dumb.

For the movie I could say, that it has interesting idea. Obviously, a lot of money has been invested and this explains the almost perfect directing. But the soundtrack is not well selected - it's bad. Not just annoying songs, but we have to listen to several attempts with flat jokes, that do not fit the atmosphere at all. If the movie was made a little bit more seriously and if there were no Matt Damon, than it would be maybe 9/10.… Expand

A feel good modern day Robinson Crusoe that is deserving of a high score for production values if nothing else. The science is very good. His solitary confinement seems to have no effect on him. Not realistic in any shape or form, but hey, let us let that slide. There’s a cast of 1000's working against the odds back on Earth cliche with their own personality conflicts and that’s OK. What’s not OK is an awful Jessica Chaistain scene that deserves to follow her around for an eternity it’s so crassly abysmal and I mean jarringly dreadful..Still for its flaws The Martian works very well on a cinematography level. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Put simply, The Martian is like Red Planet (2000) except good. Really good. It's not every film that movies me to tears, but this was one.

I don't know if it's the best space movie, but it is certainly in the top 10. It's the kind of film that doesn't just melt your heart, but stirs the mind with the possibilities its events presents. Aside from that, it has what you'd expect from an expensive speculative fiction film. High-profile actors, great effects and vistas, historical nods.

What surprised me was the soundtrack- but really, what space film is complete without David Bowie?… Expand

As the film tees off, we are instantly given a first-person view of the dangers of Mars and the fight for survival each astronaut is living out each day on the planet's surface, that is until their emergency evacuation - but nope, even Damon couldn't do that right. Abandoned upon the desolate surface of Mars after being presumed dead by his crew, Damon must do all he can to endure the martian environment. One huge thing I admire about this film's plot, is that it doesn't care about the intellectual level of its audience, as the quote above states so well: it'll science the **** out of them. It's such a complex and well-executed premise that on paper seems nothing more than a impossible feat to pull off.

Technically this film is stunning, the cinematography, the CGI, the production design, all utterly gorgeous, and according to the Golden Globes, it's one of the best comedies of recent years too... yeah, sure. Admittedly the tongue-in-cheek humour does add a more fresh appeal to the film, making it a little more unique than previous sci-fi adventures, it piles on layers of thrills, emotional value and complex character development to create one of the finest science fiction films of recent years.… Expand

Il est occupé pour l'instant : il s'est pris une tige de métal dans le bide et il s'opère tout seul comme un grand, il fouille dans les boyaux pour récupérer le morceau : son papa c'est Rambo. Ensuite, il fabrique des patates avec sa merde : faudrait quand même veiller à ne pas mourir de faim.

Puis il répare son casque qui fuit avec du chatterton, bricole la base en attendant les secours et en écoutant du disco qu'il déteste mais qu'il écoute quand même. Il reste très cool et ne s'affole jamais : il s'énerve bien une fois en 3 ans mais c'est tout. Il sait tout, Géo Trouvetou le martien, il répare tout dans la joie et la bonne humeur : encore heureux, on a failli avoir peur.

Cela dit et c'est une qualité indéniable du film, la guimauve est réduite au minimum : on est pas dans Interstellar ou Armageddon. L'ambiance est détendue, si détendue qu'on se demande s'il n'y a pas une erreur : le taxi arrive bien dans 3 semaines, pas dans 3 ans hein ? il a maigri un peu à force de manger biomacrobiotique mais rien d'alarmant.

Effets spéciaux impeccables, mise en scène spatiale de Ridley Scott propre et nette, rien à redire : du travail consciencieux. Le réalisme est mis à mal au fur et à mesure de la progression des vacances de Rémi la bricole, comme les communications avec la Terre qui se mettent à passer en temps réel mais bon on va pas chipoter. Ou l'explosion pour ralentir le vaisseau (rires étouffés).

Evidemment, il faut faire avec l'erreur de distribution : c'est Jessica Chastain qui aurait dû se retrouver bloquée sur Mars, pas l'autre là... Matt Dacon est le boulet qui entraîne le film vers le fond. Et c'est quand même long : 2h20 putain. On a quand même de beaux décors de carte postale, ça donne envie, moi je dis.

Je me demande enfin si le bouquin est aussi con que le film : Hollywood ils exagèrent tout ! mais je ne parierais pas non plus, non, non : les cons ça ose tout, c'est bien connu.… Expand

Die Amerikaner sind sehr mutig und reden von 2030/2035 wenn es um eine bemannte Mars Mission geht. Ich fände es schon sehr anspruchsvoll, wenn es vor 2050 gelingen könnte. Und wie sich die Zukunft von den Vorstellungen der Filmemacher unterscheidet haben wir ja gerade beim 30 jährige “Zurück in die Zukunft“ Jubiläum sehen können. I was waiting for something to happen, but it was going round and round in Astrodynamics curves which need to be met, applauding audiences on earth, heartbreaking crew members and families, and the Martian itself performing miracle after miracle. Characters have annoying habit of express and ultrafast dialogue responses of geniuses, like in a lot of movies today. So i gave up. The Botanist part of the movie was even good, but after that nothing. It's not about solitude itself, ''Castaway'' for example is much better movie. Maybe it needs some time for the overrated scores to deflate to something around 45%, or 5 out of 10, which is closer to reality.… Expand

Wow! After that nasty crime called "Prometheus" i would have never believed ridley scott could do it right again. While Prometheus was one of the worst sci fi movies I´ve ever seen, "The Martian" was pretty good! I especially liked how WatneyWow! I watched the whole movie, but came away with that Robinson Crusoe feeling. I could have watched the first half hour, skipped to the end and missed nothing. This is not a criticism of of the actors, directors or crew. They made a beautiful movie. I just wish people would stop using this particular plot. Going in i was afraid this movie was somehow going to be bad since Ridley Scott hasn't done a deal of great things since Gladiator, so me expectations were low, and on top of that i was prepared to witness an incredibly depressing and dower but great survival story (like The Revenant), but man was i wrong, I had some of the most fun watching this movie, i laughed so surprisingly hard at many points throughout the film, man what a special treat.

When a movie like this can achieve both incredible, emotionally driven story and acting (Matt Damon was phenomenal by the way, also one of the best in years for him) and be hilarious, uplifting and witty at many points throughout the film, a movie like this gets my vote as (one of the) Best Picture ('s) of the year.… Expand

I agree with the underused characters played by Donald Glover, Jessica Chastain and Jeff Daniels. But, Matt Damon's portrayal of main character Mark Watney was well deserved of the Oscar Nomination, and makes up for the underused characters. Harry Gregson-Williams' score fit the film exactly, and his use of electronic themes and classical strings made the score even more remarkable. I believe that The Martian was a gripping survival story and deserved all of it's praise and awards.… Expand

Overall a disjointed and underwhelming movie. Acting across the board seemed wooden & plain - swap the humans for puppets & some of the scenes set on Mars were like a Thunderbirds episode.
The wacky humour(?) parts were forced & unfunny.
While the nerdy components were very interesting they felt crammed & at times unnecessary.
The movie jumped around & made limited sense in parts.
"You can bring anything you want to Mars but unfortunately we only have room for 5 disco mp3s".
Matt wouldn't have run out of tomato sauce (ketchup) if he hadn't of used a gallon on one meal the idiot.
Some of the cinematography was nice & CG landscapes were well done, but like an alien face-hugger The Martian forces itself way too much upon the viewer.… Expand

I am disappointed to see that the editors decided to include Mark Watney (Matt Damon) abusing prescription drugs. During a scene he crushed Vicodin and used it by putting his potato in it as a dipping sauce (like Ketchup) and commented thatI am disappointed to see that the editors decided to include Mark Watney (Matt Damon) abusing prescription drugs. Ridley Scott goes back to the future, a familiar destination for him, and returns in fine shape in The Martian. Although technically science fiction by virtue of its being largely set on a neighboring planet, this smartly made adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel is more realistic in its attention to detail than many films set in the present, giving the story the feel of an adventure that could happen the day after tomorrow. Constantly absorbing rather than outright exciting, this major autumn Fox release should generate muscular business worldwide.

Scott has famously been up in space before, thrillingly in Alien, far less so in Prometheus (a sequel to which he is currently preparing). This time, he’s telling a survival story, pure and simple, of an American astronaut, thought to be dead, who’s left behind on Mars when an enormous storm compels his five fellow crew members to hastily cut short their extra-planetary visit. It’s Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but without the monkey and aliens.

When Mark Watney (Matt Damon) regains consciousness after having been impaled by an errant antenna and knocked out, he quickly assesses the situation: He’s millions of miles from home and, based on the food supply, concludes that he’s got a month to live. But he’s by nature a can-do, optimistic kind of guy, a botanist by profession possessed of a sardonic, self-deprecating sense of humor, and decides that he has no intention of dying, even though the next Mars mission from home isn’t due to arrive for another four years.

Most of the early-going is devoted to the man making calculations as to how he can maximize his time on the arid planet, beginning by growing more potatoes from the ones he’s got (in part by using his own homemade manure). Living in the relatively spacious quarters he and his colleagues set up, Mark cannibalizes everything he can, carefully apportions his rations and settles in for the long term; at moments the biggest threat to his sanity is the exclusive collection of ‘70s disco music left behind by one of his former astronauts.

The claustrophobia and solitariness of Mark’s situation is shortly broken up by events back on Earth. After Mark’s tragedy has been duly mourned by the public, a sharp-eyed NASA technician notices ground movement in her surveillance of the Martian surface that could only be Mark moving around. Communication is duly re-established, which ignites both elation at his survival and frantic assessments of what it would take, and cost, to launch a rescue mission.

Weir’s book is heavy with technical assessments of food and oxygen supplies, mechanical capabilities, flight duration and the physics of inter-planetary travel. Screenwriter Drew Goddard (World War Z, Cloverfield) has respected all these details while whittling them down to manageable and comprehensible levels. Officials at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (represented by a lively and individualistic cast including Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mackenzie Davis and Donald Glover) do everything they can to develop a feasible rescue plan and are ultimately helped out by a surprising foreign partner.

But ultimately it comes down to the willingness of Mark’s astronaut colleagues (Jessica Chastain, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie) to place themselves at great risk by attempting a long-shot rescue attempt, a decision that raises the provocative moral dilemma of whether it’s correct to put five lives at great risk for the remote reward of saving one life.

Scott does generate a degree of suspense in this climactic stretch, but the film’s overall tone is dominated by the characters’ collegial humor, mutual respect among professionals and smart people being tested by an unprecedented challenge. The director and screenwriter downplay the conventional melodrama inherent in the situation in favor of emphasizing how practical problems should be addressed with rational responses rather than hysteria, knee-jerk patriotism or selfish expedience.

Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski turns the neat trick of providing the film with a fundamental documentary reality while also making a thing of great beauty. Extra attentiveness is amply on display in all creative departments.

Absolutely a disaster. Sucked so bad. Please, do yourself a favor and never watch this movie, your eyes and ears will thank you later. Makes no sense at all. If your looking for a great space movie, choose Gravity or Interstellar.… Expand

Mix in stellar performances, a surprising sense of humor, likable characters, a compelling predicament, and a heck of a lot of intelligence and what do you get? A darn fine movie. The Martian works on just about every level.

It's a movie you can stay completely invested in. It's human and just all around fantastic. Minor shortcomings come in the form of some slower moments, but even in these moments the stellar writing takes control and makes it all worthwhile. Even watching Damon actually doing the work necessary to completing his tasks is something I was interested in watching.

It's just an all around excellent movie. One where all of the pieces come together into an intensely likable whole. It's a movie I highly recommend even to the point where I would say it's a must watch. Truly deserving of all the praise it has received.… Expand

Okay, I am also perplexed as to why people have given this terrible movie a favorable review. It seems like all we care about is a big name director and big star, then the movie has instant credibility. It seems like all we care about is a big name director and big star, then the movie has instant credibility. There was not one truly memorable moment in this movie. I cannot remember a single word, phrase, exchange of dialogue, or turn of event that left a lasting impression. The only positives were Matt Damon's likability and some decent special effects.

For one thing how can this premise be taken ass even remotely plausible? Does anyone think that we would send ship to Mars that is vulnerable to a naturally and regularly occurring storm on Mars? And who would design a ship that is docked so perilously? It was standing up like one of those red/white/blue popsicle rocket treats we used to get from the ice cream man as a kid. Or even more than that it looked like a ship from a 1950's era sci-fi movie. C'mon man, this is a new millennium. Make a ship that is supported as it would be supported on Mars. It should be shorter and more stable, not doomed to tip over like shown in the movie. That one scene lost me for the next 30 minutes.

Here are the other things I feel left me wanting with that movie.
1. When the storm struck I didn't know who was left behind. I knew it was the Matt Damon character but I didn't "know" him, meaning I had no emotional investment in that character.
2. He was a botanist, how convenient. His character didn't have to transform or change in any way in order to survive; he was the perfect guy to be left behind.
3. And just why were the potatoes going to run out??? They said you have 400 and something days, but never said why. Was it because there were other vital nutrients that would be lacking at that point?
4. If you give me 2 years to figure out how to solve a problem that means my survival, and there's nothing else to do but figure it out, I bet I'l find something too. The dates before his food was going to run out were so far out that I never felt a sense of urgency. You can call Mars "The Monster" but it wasn't pursuing the main character, just waiting for him to run out of food. How boring is that???
5. When was the last time we saw nobody but good guys in a movie? There was nobody to blame, no bad guys anywhere. That was just plain weak. A bad guys doesn't have to be a bad person, just a person who either has too much fear or fears the wrong thing, which causes him/her to make poor choices. Nobody served as a villain in any way. I know from playing sports and working in small and large companies that there's always a person who feels like the bad guy, even unintentionally. This movie, with it's little slice of heaven, was absurd to say the least.

For these reasons and other minor reasons I was totally disappointed. My wife liked it and I couldn't understand why. This was the dumbest movie I've seen in a long time. I really wanted to like ti but was terribly disappointed.… Expand

It´s pretty innovative film for the genre with a rare good-feel to it not usually used in this kind of big productions. The visuals: phenomenal. You could really feel you were in Mars. It´s not the masterpiece of the year but it is one more great occasion to celebrate oscars finally included several blockbusters among their nominees for the big categories, and for a good reason this time.… Expand

I was disappointed with this movie. Quite frankly I found it boring. There's minimalist dialogue, no character development and a rather generic plot. I seriously loved this movie,the performances are all very great,especially Matt Damon who gives the performance of a lifetime.He seems very much committed to the role and he is full of emotion that equals to a great and Oscar-worthy performance.
Ridley Scott does an incredible job here with the way that he decides to take on the story and also the ending is just brilliant and very well directed.
The score by Harry Gregson-Williams is also very haunting and memorable but what stands out the most here is the incredibly amazing cinematography by Dariusz Wolski.
The Mars scenes look great and they just feel real,them mixed with the very good visual effects just make for the perfect once in a lifetime experience.
I really enjoyed The Martian and it's certainly one of the best movies of 2015.Ridley Scott is back with a bang.… Expand

Those are clearly not issues warranting complaint, but to give you an idea those are the strongest flaws in the film. The story is incredibly inspirational and every performance does the job. Overall it's an incredibly entertaining survival story, but the strongest aspect is surprisingly the large amount of comedy that will surely keep you smiling all the while rooting for the story. It's a must-see film and a sure frontrunner for best picture of 2015.… Expand

The man on Mars is Mark Watney, and since he enters a daily journal, he lets us know what he's thinking so we don't have a narrator or voice over (clever use of technology.) To keep the mood going up and down, Mark has humorous comments (like Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.) All in all, a well put together, enjoyable movie.… Expand

Great movie. Excellent effects and direction. Matt Damon's acting was on point. I am not a Matt Damon fan, but this movie was surprisingly funny, exciting, and well worth the time. One of the best movies I have seen this year. Ok film but clearly just fairy tale. If anyone would be left in mars alone he would die. No matter who it would be. Not Matt Damon, Katy Perry and not even Schwarzenegger. Well maybe MacGyver.
