One of the greatest animated features ever made, it brings to life the tiny, plastic worlds of LEGO bricks with snappy storytelling, laugh-out-loud humor, and highly imaginative action. Stop motion storytelling has never been this epic.

The good news is that it does work, yes it is a little rushed at times, especially towards the end, and the last half hour got a touch complicated (if the pacing had slowed down then it would have helped). But what was so brilliant about The Lego Movie was how it took this merchandise and managed to make such a colourful, clever, imaginative and enormously entertaining film out of it when it could have easily been the opposite. The animation is really first rate, the vibrant yet dynamic colours are remarkably vivid and a lot of the visuals especially in the action are very inventive. There is a bright and breezy soundtrack that compliments The Lego Movie beautifully, wasn't that "Awesome" song catchy or what? The Lego Movie's chief selling point is that it is an outstandingly well-written film with snappy dialogue and thick and fast jokes that all hit their mark, by far the funniest film I've seen in a while. The action is also block-busting in the very best of ways. It's not all hilarious though, because there is a lot of heart in The Lego Movie and the message will be an inspiration to anybody. The characters have their entertaining quirks and personalities yet the film really allows you to properly care for them as well, the most colourful being the villain President Business. And what a fine voice cast too, with Will Ferrell stealing the show, he is a hoot, but Morgan Freeman's dignified blind seer and Will Arnett's splendidly dour Batman are worthy of note too. Chris Pratt is a likable, chirpy protagonist but not quite as memorable as the supporting roles. To conclude, a brilliant and near-perfect film, animated or otherwise, that people of all ages and the whole family can enjoy. 9/10 Bethany Cox Expand

Just because of the lego animation that just charmed me and I thought it would be a bomb in the cinema. Overall, it was, but very pleasantly surprised the story, which I expected so above average, but it was great for me with a great idea, and even though I write this review from memories when I saw the film as a child, I believe that the film could appeal to even more adult audiences. Just because Batman is here, which was the best character in the movie for me. I remember being disappointed in the end as a child, but looking back, I'm happy. Overall, this is a great film that I can recommend and I believe that the jingle Everything Is Awesome will get into your head for at least a good few days. Expand

The script is amazing filled with tons of really funny jokes, it's self-aware and it also has some satire about society and government. The twist is mindblowing, it made sense and was foreshadowed with subtetly and gives the movie a whole new meaning, making the ending so perfect and the message this movie gives to the audience is great. The characters are memorable and pretty well written and the animation is STUNNING, it looks like stop-motion but it's actually CGI.

This must be the best animated movie of 2014, it's infuriating to see that it didn't even get nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.

Although there are already some movies and video game adaptations of Lego, this is the first Lego movie to have a theatrical release and also the first movie made by Warner Animation Group, a feature animation division of Warner Bros. Animation which was formed in 2013.

Emmet Brickowski (Pratt) is an ordinary and happy-go-lucky construction worker in the city of Bricksburg. One day, he notices a mysterious woman at his construction site searching for something. When he investigates, he falls into a hole and finds a mysterious object known as The Piece of Resistance. After touching it, he experiences some vivid visions and passes out. When he regains consciousness, the object somehow got attached to him.

Later, he got captured by Good Cop/Bad Cop, who works for Octan Corporation president, Lord Business (Ferrell). The mysterious woman from the construction site named Wyldstyle (Banks) rescues Emmet and together they escape to the Wild West. At there, Emmet meets Vitruvius, a blind old wizard and learns that both he and Wyldstyle are one of the Master Builders.

The Master Builders oppose Lord Business because he wants to use the Kragle to freeze the whole world into perfection. At first, Wyldstyle believe that Emmet is a Master Builder which is why she rescues him in the first place but he denies being one. Despite this, Vitruvius and Wyldstyle believe that he has potential to be one and also the one to stop Lord Business.

I have to admit that I’m not really a fan of Lego toys and I never played those toys when I was a child. Do not get me wrong. I have nothing against Lego. What I am saying is this movie is not that bad. At first, I thought a Lego movie would not do well but I was wrong after watching the movie.

The animation is quite good and as good as the ones from Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios, DreamWorks and Illumination. The movie is really fun and also funny at the same time. The humours were very well utilised which makes the movie very entertaining. Chris Pratt is definitely the best part of the movie as he does his voice acting very well. Same goes for the rest of the cast.

The plot of the movie is well written and not too much of a cliché at the same time. This is one of the best non-Disney animated movie which you definitely do not want to miss it if you are a big fan of Lego. If there is sequel to this movie, I’ll look forward to it in the future.

It's like an ocean of ideas all in one movie. It has a a unique sense of humours, but at the same time the story it tells and the characters on it are so well written and compelling. Not only that, but it actually makes sense for this movie to be a LEGO movie. They make use of what make LEGOs so special and used it to elevate this movie to a whole new level. And this not only is used in the plot,, but also in the animation. It has this unique stop-motion-like animation that blends perfectly with the LEGO aesthetic, the same aesthetic that's use to create unique backrounds and a beatiful world. BUT IT DOESN'T END THERE. There's actually a reason to why the movie is made with LEGOs, a logical and coherent reason that honestly blew my **** mind. It was just really well thought, so well that one really expected the writers to be that clever. It's the evolution of the concept that Toy Story started. Oh god this movie is so unbelievably good. I kind of thought it was going to be like the Lego Batman Movie (I know, a little upside down my order of watching) which was good, funny, but nothing super unexpected. The Lego movie really surprised me, not only with hilarious jokes that really had me laughing out loud for some time, but made me want to go back to those scenes and re-watch them, great effects, fantastic voice acting, and a story that while simple, and nothing necessarily groundbreaking, was quite enough to bring both a smile to my face at the end but also pull my emotional strings just the right way. This is the right way of making animated family friendly movies; movies that are not just funny, or cool looking or with catchy songs, but that really present interesting and thoughtful topics that make anyone, no matter their age, think. And this movie clearly does that. Totally recommended for anyone, it really is masterbuilder's class to movie making. Expand

Populating the screen with many clever gags and references, while also establishing a unique story with many interesting characters, The Lego Movie proves that it's not just a children's film, and delivers both hilarious action and heartfelt emotion.

Blame it on the fact that I didn't really play with Legos as a kid (most of my Lego experience came from video games), but I thought it would just be an exercise in exploiting a brand name for easy money. Then I saw the movie, and I was absolutely wowed. Beyond the beautiful animation and great voice acting, the film is heartwarming, exciting, absolutely hilarious, and crazily enough, magnificently written all-around. I wasn't sure how I felt when I heard that they were making a gigantic franchise out of this, but let me tell you guys: after watching the movie, this absolutely NEEDS a franchise. There's so many directions you can go in, but also, if those sequels and new films are at least half as good as this film, they will be amazing. I'm telling you guys, if you haven't already, check out "The Lego Movie," because "Everything is Awesome" in this film. Expand

The animation itself is very original and stands out from other animated films I've ever seen. It's bright colors and the way it moves is pretty solid. The characters are fantastic and all have depth to them, and have great chemistry, especially because of the great voice acting. The story itself is very awesome, and has a great message that stands out from generic messages like, family is important, or respect others. The humor in this movie is very clever, and almost every joke in this movie made me chuckle or laugh. Overall, the Lego movie managed to be one of the biggest commercials that I've seen that managed to entertain me, and I would recommend this to anyone, especially those kids. Expand

The film is aGoing to the cinema with high expectations and finding that the film meets them in full always inspires a priceless sense of fulfilment. When I watched The LEGO Movie, in February 2014, my expectations were actually exceeded. The film is a success for many different reasons, thanks to its many layers of meaning; it gives the audience not only what they want, but also what they don’t know they want just yet. The story, focused on different aspects of the LEGO experience, combines impeccable CGI action, surprisingly sharp social critique, and a heartwarming message. As if this wasn’t enough, it’s directed by 21 Jump Street’s hot duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and its voice cast includes Chris Pratt (you’ll see him in Guardians of the Galaxy soon), Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett. Plus Morgan Freeman voicing Vitruvius, the half-looney half-prophet wizard. And did I mention Liam Neeson, playing Bad Cop (or Good Cop, depending on what turn his interrogation takes)? Considering the past results in developing a cinematic product based on well-established brands (mostly hit and miss, to use an understatement), the outcome is astonishingly positive. The LEGO Movie has become Warner Bros. Pictures’ most commercially successful animated film, grossing almost $500 million worldwide, and soon due for release in DVD and Blu-ray. Whereas extra content is meagre (limited to three amateur shorts and the film’s main song singalong video), it’s well worth saving The LEGO Movie a spot on your shelf.

The LEGO Movie’s story develops the proverbial “Everyman turns into hero” arch in three acts: the film opens presenting Emmet, an ordinary construction worker who lives following instructions. President Business tells him (and all citizens) what to do and decides what should make him happy, and Emmet is ecstatic to comply: he buys overpriced coffee, endlessly quotes awful sitcom catchphrases, sings to the most annoying (and most memorable) tune in the history of made-to-be-abhorred songs, happily follows every precept of his society in order to fit in. Sounds like the world surrounding you, doesn’t it? Well, Emmet also happens to be the “Chosen One”, he who is revealed will save the LEGO universe from the threat of Business’s secret weapon: superglue. Along with a team of whacky rebels, Emmet will travel across lands in a journey of self-discovery, personal growth and meta-reflections on the spirit of LEGO as a product. With a closing moral that poignantly celebrates art for art’s sake.

Who initially thought that all this is just product placement, may want to take a closer look: The LEGO Movie doesn’t make you want to buy and play LEGO, it just makes you want to watch the film again and again. You can’t get enough of its hilarious and nipping approach, elevating even the most mundane stuff into joie de vivre: from special effects entirely made of LEGO (explosions, smoke, fire, and even the shower’s water) and over-the-top action sequences, to countless cool references to pop culture and the history of LEGO (Benny, the "1980-something space guy" with an obsession for building spaceships, wears an helmet cracked in the exact spot where real-life LEGO pieces would usually break). I could go on forever. The LEGO Movie is the kind of film that you find yourself quoting as soon as you leave the cinema: “And when this happens… and when Vitruvius says… and when Batman does this and that…”. Oh boy, I feel like I’m 10 again. At that age I had a few cherished VHS of animated classics that I never grew tired of watching: The Sword in the Stone, 101 Dalmatians, Robin Hood, Toy Story. If I were that boy now, The LEGO Movie would surely earn a place among them.

When he came out the first trailer for the film did not attract my attention, but felt that animation really is amazing. I went to the cinema with my brothers and only one word to describe the film: AWESOME !, Not only proves to be a masterpiece and one of the best films of 2014 but is also a great idea from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The story is narrated by Matrix style but in a more hilarious and sympathetic way to the public. I must also mention the great achievement of voices got for the film, for example Chris Pratt plays incredibly Emmet, a construction worker who hasn't have ideas that obviously ends up saving the day and Elizabeth Banks plays impressively Wyldstlye, a young master builder who will the will be the companion and girlfriend of the construction worker. I should also mention the incredible amount of players who were called to the film as Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Charlie Day, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, Will Arentt, Etc. I should also mention that live action scenes was something that impressed me in the cinema and also used his end. If you would give only bad thing about the film it is the cliche of "Believe in yourself" is something that we have seen in many films, but does not seem to affect him too much to the story. In total with animation, comedy, acting voice, story, characters, references and everything but it's really awesome. I regret a bit that wasn't nominated for an Oscar for best animated film (Damn you Oscars), i just hopefully not do the same with Shaun the Sheep Movie or Inside Out. In Total: The Lego Movie is Awesome and like the song says: Everything is Awesome! Expand

This is a very creative and very fun movie with a witty story and really good humor. I liked the animation style in this where everything was Lego including not just structures but like water and fire and things like that which was so creative. I also love how the animation is shown to look like it's stop motion which was very unique and I actually prefer how the animations shows those limitations with how Lego Mini Figures move over how they smoothly move in like a cut-scene of a Traveler's Tales Lego game. I also love the characters in this movie and the cameos they make, it was so fun seeing different Lego properties come together in this movie. The plot does have some simplicity to it, but it's still a fun plot and is actually not to be taken that seriously, but in a good way. Overall, I loved The Lego Movie. I remember seeing trailers and stuff for this movie back in late 2013 and at most expecting this film to be just good like nothing special but nothing too bad, but I barely expected to fall in love with this film. This film's amazing and one of my favorite films of the year. If ever there was a movie that defined "surprise hit" this is it. Never in a million years did I think I was going to like this. Yet I did.

Great animation, or stop motion, whatever. Great voice acting. Fun plot and pretty funny humor.

However, I did feel the pacing was off and very inconsistent. Dragging, then suddenly jumping forward, then dragging again. Stop, go, stop, go. This pacing style did kinda disrupt many of the jokes, not letting them sink in or get overshadowed by the next thing happening.

Overall:
The LEGO movie is a ton of fun. Even with its minor flaws I thoroughly enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
