On the downside: Pretty much everything else, characters have to have bonus injected stupidity to align events to amplify the protagonists situation and somehow the invisibility mcguffin. while renders invisible also removes sound, smell, physical presence (unless plot demands otherwise) and also leads to some ludicrous shenanigans to the extend that the mid movie shock was both so telegraphed, and badly executed I actually laughed.
Shame as the first few mins is actually really quite interesting and genuinely tense. I've seen a lot worse but honestly you are not missing anything if you pass on it, and there actually far more interesting takes on this, hell this even makes Hollow Man look good.

-
Directed and written by Leigh Whannel, one of Jason Blum's recruits (Blumhouse Production), "The Invisible Man" is a mistaken effort to expose and take advantage of harassment as a cinematographic product, offensive to the real-life victim society. Under the consideration that I am a man, I will share a perspective to the society of men who need to educate a little bit more about this. We, men, CAN'T own the story of a woman simply because we don't have experiences in the body, the psychology and biology of them, much less we can create a representation, and that's the mistake of this movie. There is a strong sense of masculinity in the main conflict, the main character's context, her decisions, her definition of the solution, and the final situation. That is an extensive analysis that I won't make right now. But the idea is to dismiss intentions similar to this one since, unconsciously, it becomes a man industry exploiting women's image and story.
On the cinematographic side, the lack of special effects, and its technique is enough simple and elegant to achieve visual quality and shines the realistic sense of the image. The music, by Benjamin Wallfish, decors that elegance. The photography is on point, just as the scenery. In acting, Elizabeth Moss is the only one that has a working field, but her character ruins the sense of her reactions. There is simply a dissonance between the actress and her situation, and I blame it on the script. Even though the humble and good intention, there is a lot of ignorance and masculine cynism that ruins a very important representation message and throws to the garbage any narrative achievement with an offensively unconscious and stupid ending.
Whannell has an interesting inclination for horror and sci-fi that has been exploring decently until now, but his intention of creating social consciousness needs to be directed to topics on which he can give an opinion.

Um bom filme de suspense.

A obra me deixou curioso na maior parte do tempo.

It's full great sequences full of tension and paranoia.

It suffers a bit towards the end. When it seems like it's about to end it pulls a twist and keeps going for another ten minutes that feel unnecessary, but it didn't take away that much from my enjoymet of the film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely haunting from start to finish, with an exceptional performance by Elisabeth Moss. It opens very strong; you immediately feel the fear, the tension, the signifigance of Cecilia's escape, and that feeling never quite leaves until the very end. The directing was really great, with loads of long shots which I feel like is really entering horror more lately, and I love that. I also really enjoyed the ending. It felt like something that would be predictable, but it managed to surprise me! Expand

The Invisible Man is a UNSEEN site for good ole sore eyes, most iconic as The Mummy, with the exception of course of Tom Cruise. The film is about a seemingly dead sociopath who stalks and terrorizes his girlfriend (Elizabeth Moss) in plain site (while literally unseen doing it). For this reason I highly recommend The Invisible Man. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The newest film by Leigh Whannell starring Elizabeth Moss with a powerful performance that elevates a well-done film from a jump-scare fueled suspense/thriller into a great one. Cecilia Kass, portrayed by Moss, is a woman stuck in a very unstable relationship with the titular character of Adrian Griffin, portrayed here by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who is a controlling, abusive boyfriend and also a genius in the "optics technology" department. What the film does well is that it never delves too far into showing the abuse between the two and does not try to explain just how the suit works. It gives you enough information about both situations that you can accept it without wasting much time or effort of explaining the pseudo-science. It does show at least some of the aggressive behavior by Adrian right at the start and quickly shows the behavior. The movie starts with a slow burn and really ramps up after the apparent suicide of Adrian. Though everyone in the film is convinced of this, Cecilia learns that may not be the case here. Just as her life seems to be getting better is when unexplainable events start to occur. From the small kitchen fire she thinks she starts to her work portfolio being emptied out amongst other things. It feels like a ghost film without the paranormal but the plan of a narcissistic engineer who would rather use the grand technology to stalk his ex-girlfriend and make her miserable just because he can. The film has some great cinematography and the score by Benjamin Wallfisch is powerful. A pleasant surprise from Whannell and co that further shows he can do great wonders in the technological thrillers after his last his last entry Upgrade(2018). Although there are a few scenes and moments that could be nitpicked to death the performance by Moss is the best part of the film and plenty of reason to catch this one in theaters. Expand

Well, the idea was nice but execution needed to be better. The pace of the movie was also a problem, first of all this movie didn't need to be 2hour movie. 1hr30 min (max) was enough for this type of story. I was really excited for this after seeing all the reviews but after watching it, I don't think it deserved so much rating. Overall, would say that you can give it a try but don't expect too much.. Wow the build-up to the titular character is painfully slow. It treats the audience like idiots, we know there is an invisible man as it's in the title, we don't need an hour of the film trying to convince us there isn't one and question the protagonists sanity like there actually isn't an invisible man. There is one! Great acting, cinematography and sound design. Dull characters, uninspiring direction and lack of ‘fun’ entertainment. There are some genuinely creepy invisible moments to be thrilled by. The portrayal of domestic abuse is actually harrowing but this might have been better put into a different film, maybe a more drama focussed one rather than a horror one. I suspect the director actually wanted to make a drama but was forced to make a horror film. I honestly didn't hate this but also cannot recommend it. There are much better and less forgettable films to watch that are similar, It Follows (2014) for example! Even Hollow Man (2000). Expand

Once alone, and once with family. I enjoyed it both time. This is a perfect thriller/suspense flick, and while yes, there are glaring plot holes, the experience overall is rewarding. It feels like it has two parts: the first is more horror, suspense - building tension, paranoia, and the other more action driven, mystery solving with a bit of revenge.

The camera work is phenomenal here, the editing (including sound design) really grabs you. I discovered a few things that I missed the first time around. The lingering wide shots make you search and look and anticipate but the movie never reverts to cheap jump scars and quick cuts.

I was a fan of the original with Kevin Bacon, but this is a hole different ball game and I'm all for it.

However despite a great cast and some spooky moments, it didn't ever truly commit to one throughline story so there are sort of all of the possible outcomes and 3 different endings rolled into an overlong run time. The plot should be basic but is spoiled by the distractingly dumb reactions of those who fall 'prey' to the invisible douche. It's a shame really because somewhere inside this 2hr movie is a superb 8/10 90 min thrillride.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Slick thriller which has a very strong lead performance, despite her character making odd decisions that really are so jarring they make you question her motives (and intelligence) as you watch.

All the characters suffers from a script which prioritises doing cool and clever things with it's titular antagonist and his gadget suit that don't make sense and make you literally go "well, THAT wouldn't happen/be possible/a logical move".

Others have mentioned this, but the fact that the lead character is able to summon transport out of the blue at a moments' notice using her phone - but the moment she is alone with all the evidence she needs to prove her theory about her controlling ex, she seems to completely forget she even owns a mobile communications device with a built in camera!!

This movie is an acceptable way to kill a couple of hours, but i'd never go out of my way to revisit this again.

Having your villain being invisible is a great concept and how the characters adapt is amazing, this movie though with the jumps and the sequences never does anything that interesting. What is interesting and very compelling is Elizabeth Moss's character. Her entire story which thankfully the movie focuses on is so enthralling that it is the only thing that keeps this movie together. She is a victim of an abusive relationship and seeing how she not only is dealing with her abuser, but also trying to convince everyone she isn't crazy keeps you on the edge of your seat. As a personally story of a survivor taking on her aggressor the movie is amazing in that aspect. I say this is a high rental for sure. Expand

Wells novel. In fact, aside from sharing a title and the basic concept of a sinister man that is invisible, this film has nearly nothing in common with the H.G. Wells novel. This frees up writer-director Leigh Whannell to create a wholly fresh approach to the story of a mad scientist that makes himself invisible. Unlike the Wells story or the film Hollow Man, this story focuses not on the scientist but on his victim.

Elizabeth Moss stars as Cecilia, whose partner, Adrian, is a controlling and abusive tech genius. In a suspenseful opening scene, she makes her escape from his luxurious compound-like West Coast mansion. She is hiding out with a friend (Aldis Hodge) and suffering through PTSD when she receives news that Adrian has killed himself. Cecilia finally begins to feel safe and free when unusual and suspicious occurrences begin. Adrian’s research was in optics, so it does not take her long to realize that he has somehow made himself invisible to continue to control and torment her.

The Invisible Man was produced and released by Blumhouse, the dominant production company in modern horror, which likes to keep budgets low (to keep profits high). The visual effects involving the invisible man are sparse but effective: floating objects, footprints appearing out of nothing, a human shape appearing when covered in paint or water. There are big scare scenes but also plenty of lowkey creepy moments to make your skin crawl. Disembodied breath on a cold night appearing behind Cecilia is a quiet but frightening moment. Maybe the simplest and scariest effect is the camera panning over to an empty corner or staying put after everyone has left a room. As a director, Whannell is smart enough to know that the best way to scare us is not with special effects or blood and gore but to put us right in Cecilia's shoes. We are as certain of the invisible man’s existence as she is and as uncertain of where he is or what he’ll do next as she is. His attacks on her are not only physical. When she is at a job interview and her portfolio is empty, we know what happened, but the interviewer just thinks that she is forgetful and unqualified. Adrian isolates her from her family and friends just as he did before, sabotaging the relationships that are holding her up, just as real life abusers physically and emotionally isolate their victims.

Elizabeth Moss gives an outstanding performance that drives the movie. Through her performance and the stylistic choices of Wharnell we really feel Cecilia’s paranoia. That is the major reason why this movie is so successfully frightening and suspenseful. She begins to come undone because of the stress and anxiety of her situation, but she knows she is not losing her mind. Scene after scene of her of not being believed has a deep significance beyond the plot. Any number of women could unfortunately relate to being not believed and left vulnerable by those supposed to offer protection. This movie easily avoids the male gaze and any lascivious scenes you might expect in a modern era movie about an invisible man: there are no scenes of Cecilia in the shower or getting undressed. From beginning to end this is an excellently crafted, scary film. This isn’t art house horror or elevated horror. This is just great horror. I wish more horror films were like this.

There's a lot I loved about The Invisible Man. The way the camera moves to emphasize negative space in the tension building scenes and precisely track movement throughout action scenes shows a real attention to detail and context. The sound design (minus the jump scares) created an atmosphere where any mundane household noise could foreshadow a scare. And Elizabeth Moss will never fail to impress with her ability to play distressed, imprisoned, powerful, and courageous. Her character here is not too far off from June in Handmaid's Tale. All of those elements really made me want to fully embrace this film. Unfortunately, it seems like the need to appeal to/please wide audiences overtook the main artistic direction in this film. Needless jump scares with the cheesiest loud sound queues are peppered throughout the film, sometimes in places that seem like they would have been scarier without the tired quick cut/loud bang trope. Dialogue sometimes seems incredibly forced. And I'm not usually a hole-poker, but the ending has some obvious logical failings. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my critical review of this movie, no hype and inflated ratings. It's a realistic rating, compared to other movies I've seen (and I've seen quite a few). The characters and plot in the movie don't have much logic, characters act like absolute idiots in this movie.

The first 20 mins of the movie starts with being a bit too woke and cringe. Okay, you got abused by your controlling husband and you want to leave. That's fine, but at least tell your sister what's going on. If you don't want anything to do with your husband, then don't take his money when he dies. Not good enough for a proper goodbye, but good enough to claim that 5 million dollars. Just the start of this movie had me rooting for the husband, but the husband turns out to be a very dumb guy. A genius in optics, but needs laser eye surgery to see that his wife is not that pretty and there's a lot more hotter fish in the sea.

Plot is pretty thin, what stops the husband from just kidnapping the main character and do whatever he wants? Why go through the trouble of "killing yourself", just write a new will, pay no money and find a new wife... All this playing around doesn't make sense. Please tell me which restaurant gives you a giant butcher knife as cutlery when you didn't order anything to eat yet, what do you need that butcher knife for anyway, is there whale on the menu?! Also, the main character gets an out of jail free card when killing the brother of the husband. That would still be unrelated to the murder of your sister and take time before you can prove you are innocent.

Furthermore, which billionaire/millionaire is so desperate for a baby that he will stalk and murder to have it. Wouldn't it be much easier to just find a new girl or heck pay a surrogate mother to have it for you for god sake. From a business standpoint developing this suit would require more than just being a scientist in optics and would require a team to be build, meaning other people would know about it. You would need at least a material scientist to create the actual suit and a software engineer to create that nifty UI/logic for that touch screen/suit. Did I mention already that this movie doesn't have much logic and the characters are absolute idiots?

The acting of main character is pretty good and is definitely carrying the movie, because the acting of the other characters wasn't that great.

When you ignore the plot holes and appreciate the main character's acting, you can see the movie for what it really is (a psychological thriller). I wouldn't rate it higher than a 6, mainly because of the weak plot and acting (except for the main character). Don't believe the people rating it a 8-10, realistically this movie isn't even near the godfather (89%)/titanic (78%)/matrix (88%)/shawshank redemption (92%) and they had way way way better acting / plot. You can't possible think that this movie is better than titanic.

PS: Don't watch this if you're trying to find a good horror, because this isn't a horror movie.

The suit was creepy but consistent as well. It wasn't as though it could do anything, it had defined limits.

Story however was the same old abused girl runs away from rapey guy. It worked kinda but could've been more.

TheA very good job in which well-defined tasks are played. The story of the character is revealed in an interesting way.The normal viewer no longer cares how the hero looks, because closer to the ending he wants to worry about the character. The atmosphere of the film contributes to this feeling. I also liked the camera solutions that were in another project by Leigh Whannell(Upgrade). The picture also has flaws that compensate for the merits. People ask questions about the reasons for the behavior of the characters, especially the main character of the story. I consider these questions not essential for myself, since in this example the statement works - there is a situation and it is like that. And it's better to think about the reasons behind the scenes, think about how people get to this. Read literature on psychology and get acquainted with real stories of management, moral pressure over people, family abuse. Person who understands such things, will perceive the film at its true worth with all its shortcomings. Those who have not encountered and do not want to understand this will see something different - an ugly woman and her "bad behavior". Expand

(Español/ English)

English Abstract

The Invisible Man, by Australian Leigh Whannel, is an extraordinary combination of abusive drama, psychological and paranoid thriller and horror film. In many moments, the suspense, tension and the sense of threat that the film generates are intolerable.

Elizabeth Moss is the ideal actress to play Cecilia, a suffering woman, abused by her husband, who even in the most desperate moments, never abandons a will to fight and access to the truth that will allow her to discover the nature of the threat that haunts her and face her.

A twist on the subject of abuse and by no means a trivialization.

Abstract Español

English Review

The film opens with Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) sneaking out of the spectacular home she shares with her husband Adrian (Oliver Jackson Cohen), a psychopathic abuser and optical genius. Despite finding out some time after the death of her husband, she begins to ensure that Adrian harasses her.

The Invisible Man, by Australian Leigh Whannel is an extraordinary combination of drama, psychological and paranoid thriller and horror film. In many moments, the suspense, tension and the sense of threat generated by the frames and some small events of an admirable subtlety and even elegance are really intolerable. On the other hand, its dosed and sudden scenes of violence and special effects are wonderfully resolved.

As in any good genre film, its core is the drama that Cecilia suffers based on the persecutory trauma she suffers like every abused woman, enhanced in this case by signs that do not seem to be from the real world, making the feeling of threat more omnipresent and desperate. It could be said that The Invisible Man refers in some respects to films like Sleeping with the enemy and Gaslight.

There is no trivialization of the issue of abuse: the film never denies the past of Cecilia and her abusive husband. Abuse does not begin with invisibility and Cecilia herself reminds us all the time: she refers to her past with him all the time. The film only shows a new stage of that abuse.

Elizabeth Moss is the ideal actress to play this suffering woman who, even in the most desperate moments, never abandons a will to fight and access the truth that will allow her to discover the nature of the threat that torments her and to confront it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Invisible Man is a big step up for Leigh Whannell from horror films he’s worked on previously, namely the Insidious and Saw franchises, and is probably my favorite film from him to date. The title may be a bit cliche and revealing of the premise of the movie, but everything else about it is great. The acting, directing and writing are all really good and it’s almost surprising how good they are considering that Whannell wrote Insidious: Chapter 2 and directed Chapter 3. This film is for Whannell what The Conjuring is for James Wan. Elizabeth Moss gives a fantastic performance as her character which is bolstered by the supporting cast and capitalized on really well by Whannell. He makes great use of the chemistry between the characters and does a great job of shifting the tone of the film quickly via interactions between the characters. In an instant we go from sad and sympathetic to serious and dark, and the script doesn’t forget to incorporate some fun and lighthearted moments too to balance out the scary parts of this movie. TIM bases its horror in what we can’t see and has a presence throughout it that grips us with fear and anxiety as much so as it does for Moss’s character, allowing it to be a bit unique as a horror movie. Unless you’re really good with horror movies, this isn’t one you’ll want to watch alone in the dark cause you’ll get freaked out just sitting there. A lot of horror movies make you not want to look behind you or in the mirror; with TIM, it doesn’t matter where you look or what position you’re in, and that alone makes this a very effective movie. In addition, Whannell, like with Insidious 3, makes great use of camera movement and position, light and sound to make this movie even scarier and hold viewers the whole way through. TIM is packed with emotional moments that make you smile and sit there with your mouth open, so it’s a bit of a rollercoaster. TIM also flows really well and makes sense the whole way through, with scenes that are very realistic of what would actually happen in the situations that occur and how regular people would respond to them. Whannell gives us real world horror since it’s feasible that something like this could actually happen in the real world, which is slightly freaky but also a nice breath of fresh air from other horror franchises that are more founded in the supernatural. The end is also smart and satisfying for both viewers and Moss’s character and is something you likely won’t see coming the first time around, giving viewers a bit of a surprise. Overall, TIM is an intriguing and effective horror film and I’d strongly recommend it to fans of the genre and of Whannell. Expand
