It has its share of laughs and very well-done sequences, with a bit of humor for everyone, though it specializes in the vulgar. The main reason I truly like this movie is because it is a comedy that doesn't sacrifice the plot for cheap jokes. The story is well-done and well-presented, and makes the viewer care, or at least wonder, about how it is going to end. Unless you have a very dirty sense of humor, it won't be hysterical by any stretch of the imagination, but the quality acting and script delivers both laughs and a story. Expand

I'm sure you could work it out from the title, as well as from this review The Hangover is probably the funniest movie to come out during the 2009 movie season. The laughs flow out naturally, be it from the main four cast members, from characters who appear one time (the cops especially) or just from a random reveal (wait for the valet to return, and wait for them to open the trunk) Not everything is revealed (Where did the chicken come from?) and some suspension of disbelief is required (Mike Tyson has no guards to stop three men taking his tiger?) but trust me, this film leaves you in stitches so many times and is so fun, you won't care. Oh, and once you've finished watching this movie, stick around during the credits where you'll get a montage of pictures showing a number of things the characters did back in their forgotten night A film you won't want to forget Expand

I don't know if I had too high expectations about how it would play out, but the "jokes" seemed to be a formula of: take a basic subject/concept and add a totally unrelated twist that makes no sense other than to be just totally random, and then you have comedy. The weird thing to me is that I normally like weird, strange, nonsense as well, but the Hangover just seemed like the writer was trying to imitate that style, but found mediocrity instead. I'm not going to bother commenting on the story, because it really has no bearing on the overall movie. As a comedy it just needs to make you laugh, with the story coming in a distant 2nd. Not a bad comedy, as it did have its moments, but to me it was pretty stale overall. Expand

"Wow, Zach Galifianakis! I love his standup. It'll be cool to see how Hollywood implements his strange brand of humor. Ed Helms! He's so talented. He was great on the old version of The Daily Show and The Office." After that I had about a hundred people come to me and say it was the best comedy ever made. -- So it's probably safe to say my expectations were too high. But even considering that, there's nothing mind-blowingly funny about it. Sure, there are a few moments that had me laughing pretty loudly, but most of the movie involved long stretches of the same joke played out over and over. -- (Main characters learn something strange about the night before.) (Main characters look at each other shocked and worried.) True, the things they learn are different, but the punchline is always Ed Helms looking confused. -- Bottom line, I saw it, thought it was okay, and never cared to watch it again. Expand

After I went to the cinema, I got right exactly what I was looking for. Absolute fun. The setup of "everything can happen in Vegas" opens almost endless possibilities, and this movie did it right. It was surprising, that while the movie kept up the constant fun, the plot was well-written, as it also kept you interested as the team tried to figure out what they did in an almost detective-mystery fashion, and the conclusion is crazy. I can highly recommend this movie, as it will make you want to have a party in Vegas. Expand

One of the funniest comedies in the last 20 years. Don't listen to all the people who rated it a 0, they have no idea what "funny" is and are probably really uptight. I couldn't stop laughing throughout the entire film.

Hit and Miss comedy has a few moments that made me laugh out loud but for the most part it was pretty cringe worthy. Zach Galifianakis was definitely the saving grace though.

I loved what the makers of this film were trying to achieve, and in some places, it actually works, but in general it was a bit of a let-down and not as funny as it could have been.

Overall a good movie, started off slow but sure gets going near the end. The credits iare the best part of the film. You wonder the entire time what happened in Vegas and you get the best part for last.

For Seemingly being THE comedy film of the summer...I was excited going into this film because I found the trailers and TV spots to be hilarious, so I could only imagine what the entire film would be like...and it dosen't dissapoint. For the most part, this is your standard vulgar comedy that tosses out decency in favor of something far more crude...and often times these films work very well (if the Box Office performance is any indication). The story is simple...4 guys go to Vegas for a bachelor party, the most important one of the bunch turns up missing after a (very) wild night of partying, the other 3 go on a wacky "quest" to remember what happened and fine their friend. It's a very straight forward formula...but a perfect one in the sense that there is A LOT you can do with a premise like, and they don't waste a minute of it. It moves along very fast like a roller coaster of comedy and rarely lets up till the rather filthy conclusion in the form of pictures. Films like this are a lot of fun...any road trip film featuring a bunch of guys with good chemistry and seemingly the desire to get in a bunch of trouble is sure to be if anything, watchable...and The Hangover does this perfectly. The characters are interesting in the most obnoxious of ways and they DO come off like a group of buddies in over their heads in Sin City. That being said...this is a delightfully raunchy summer comedy with "likeable" characters and an excellent forumla that seemingly works and works. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Expand

However, this is the most consistently hilarious movie I have seen in years. The setup might sound unoriginal or even contrived, but the jokes really are laugh-out-loud funny until the very end, where almost every element of the plot is resolved in a satisfying and (dare I say) clever way. What sets it apart from other comedies is, in my opinion, the dialogue (and singing parts). It's much wittier than you usually see in movies such as these, and I would not be surprised to find out that many lines were improvised. It's crude, to be sure, but as long as you're not bothered by such a thing you'll be glad you spent your money. Expand

[***SELF-POLICING SPOILER ALERT***] Peter Berg's "Very Bad Things" showed us the buzz, all too graphically, as an alcohol and coke-fueled party goes awry once Michael(Jeremy Piven) impales the stripper on a towel hook. "The Hangover" [***SELF-POLICING SPOILER ALERT***] Peter Berg's "Very Bad Things" showed us the buzz, all too graphically, as an alcohol and coke-fueled party goes awry once Michael(Jeremy Piven) impales the stripper on a towel hook. "The Hangover" informs the 1998 black comedy in this respect: Had we only seen the aftermath, a nude dead woman sprawled across the bathroom floor, would we have given these bachelor party attendees the benefit of the doubt? They could have blamed it on the booze and drugs. But since we saw the buzz, they're guilty, regardless of their altered states. "The Hangover" uses off-screen action to stoke our imaginations. Not a bad thing. In Euripedes' play "Medea", the titular character kills her children prior to the non-action of her monologues. Dramatize the murders and the audience may become less objective about her transgressive acts. The play's success hinges on Medea remaining sympathetic. Same goes for the bachelors in "The Hangover", who get away with behaving badly since the filmmaker kept the debauchery of the bachelor party off-screen. A much darker narrative is suggested, however, by the mere presence of rohypnol(better known as "ruffies", the date rape drug), which Alan(Zach Galifianakis) mistakenly purchases instead of ecstasy. Had he known what was in his possession, the relationship between this film and "Very Bad Things" might have been a lot closer than it already is. After all, there is a reference to the Berg film, albeit an oblique one. Although "The Hangover" treats the full frontal man in the trunk as high comedy, the moviegoer shouldn't overlook that the amnesiac men probably sentenced him to die out of greed. They almost did a very bad thing indeed. He's the Kobe Tai. But they're forgiven, because we never saw the potential crime in the making. Expand

I'm not going to tell you it's badly made - because, for what it sets out to do, I don't think it is. I just stop laughing at jokes rooted in shock after the first few, and I start wanting for variety. The Baltimore review puts it well - if you start to resist this movie at any point, or hope for it to resolve into something with some kind of emotional payoff, you'll just feel frustrated. This movie knows its ambitions, and if grossout humor (even well-executed grossout humor by talented comic actors) isn't your bag, don't be fooled by the high score, you'll leave with a bad taste in your mouth.
