This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a genuine fan of the Arthurian Legends, I went into this one expecting a great deal. Several online Youtube critics raved about it and because I respected their opinions, I was looking forward to viewing The Green Knight. The expression 'all sizzle, no steak' applies here. From the opening scenes where we are introduced to Gawain in what appears to be a dank and steamy brothel, there is darkness and shadows with patches of light which is how I would describe the rest of this film. There is too much obscurity here to attain any real insight, whether with the themes, the character or the nature of the story itself. Because the film is based on a well-known legend, it has the basic bones of a solid tale but the execution remained poor resulting in no real pay off. For instance, we see that Gawain is a young wastrel, sleeping around and we know this rake, when not bedding his mistress (Vikander) is impetuous and the type to lunge into a fight. He protects his mother's honour earlier on during a tavern brawl so we are convinced he can handle himself. And yet when in the forest, faced with three pathetic teenage scavenger thieves on his quest, he is all-too-quickly disarmed and trembles like a frightened child in the sight of their puny daggers. Right then, I rolled my eyes, feeling completely taken out of the film. Moreover, if they were thieves, why did they leave behind Gawain's sword? No sense there. The whole scene, I am certain, took place simply that he would lose his horse and spend the rest of the film on foot. The screenplay writer made the scene happen as opposed to it happening naturally. And if director/writer Lowery had previously established Gawain's ability to engage fiercely in combat, why couldn't the knight dispatch of the three thieves in a merciless way similar to the way he cut off the Green Knight's head? At least this would align with his character. I sincerely believe something meaningful was missed. If Gawain had approached the knight at the end with greater sins/mistakes/faults to his name, his accepting of his fate would have lent more of an impact. Instead, on the journey, random characters, figures and a protective totem fox wander into his life and drift off. I think I would rather have watched Love and Monsters, a basic Netflix action flick than sit through this critic-applauded pablum again. For all its flaws, the basic movie with gargantuan insects and a likeable lead were more fun and engaging than this auteur fluff piece. This is a spectacle with no real meaning. The integrity of this film depends on the visuals and the superficial trappings from the cinematography to the score. I ended up skipping to the end two-thirds in, impatient and tired of the hero and his unfocused character. Expand

While on a sub-textual level this film speaks volumes about honor, courage and the duty of all people uphold their own moral codes that actual events of the movie seem quite scatter and vague. From time to time I found myself questioning the wandering nature of this film as shuffled along on Gawain's quest. This however was punctuated by several moment in the film which felt real and impactful to the character of Gawain himself. These are the real highlight of the film and feel more meaningful then set pieces they director is trying to show off. While I do appreciate how gorgeous this film is I think a little bit more care could have put towards the writing of the plot and how each thread of the film ties together in the its abrupt but heart felt climax. This is definitely something you should watch if you have the spare time to do so. Expand

Encouraged by his mother Morgana to attend the reception at the court of Camelot, the dissolute young man witnesses the arrival of the mysterious and imposing Green Knight, who tests the court. Gawain offers to take up his challenge and therefore can hit him first, but a year later he will have to go to a remote church to receive the blow back. Gawain beheads the creature, but it takes its head back and repeats its prophecy, which now sounds like a death sentence. The boy is knighted and passes a year of wicked pleasures, but the new Christmas is approaching.
This film is the best chivalrous epic film I have ever seen and undoubtedly one of the best films of recent years. The best one by Lowery.

Kinda like the bulk of the scenery in it actually! I respect that the filmmaker went with a old tale which has a different rhythm, focus and goal compared to modern stories. What I cannot forgive is how in a story which has something of a coming of age adulthood theme going, the main character remains a wussy little child of a man who has opportunity after opportunity handed to him. He's never shown learning from mistakes. Growing. Or taking responsibility for himself and his actions. There is precisely one exception to this, and a miraculous vision is involved. Things this film would need to be better and more entertaining: Character growth, more chances for good dialogue, some kind of setup or plan on the quest, the lead coming up with a plan or strategy. The main character having redeeming traits at all actually. Its dull because you don't know where the film is going, and you can't get invested enough in the lead to follow them blindly through it. Visually quite beautiful and relatively coherent at least. Expand

The fantasy locations are among the best I've ever seen. I love the Lord of The Rings Movies, but never entirely felt at home with the NZ locations - when I read the books they brimmed with feelings of the English countryside that I grew up in and, beautiful as it is, the NZ locations never felt totally right to me (but still a great substitute). By comparison the Irish locations used in this movie are simply stunning and feel much more in tune with the English Literature sources.
Music and sound is stunning, especially the sound production. I've never paid much attention to sound production before, but one critic website pointed it out and they're quite right, it is simply amazing in this movie.
The plot is a new twist on the legend, but it works very well and acting duties are delivered excellently without exception. My only gripe would be Vikander's accent as Essel - I felt she was aiming for some sort of UK accent, but haven't got a clue what it was meant to be. That's all irrelevant really because as 'the Lady' she delivers an absolutely stunning performance.
And finally, casting. All excellent without exception, but particular kudos to Dev Patel, one of the finest actors of his generation delivering an amazing lead.

You must do your homework to understand and enjoy this hypnotic and haunting adventure. Just knowing the five virtues of a knight which are: Generosity, Friendship, Chastity, Mercy and Chivalry, you'll have enough information to understand in more detail the purpose of the film, but, that doesn't mean that it'll solve all your doubts, which will be many.
Even though I didn't understand at first, I could recognize that the script is quite well done, because it has many interesting and iconic dialogues. The performances are quite wondrous and each of them is quite appreciated. David Lowery shows us his most ambitious project to date, the level of production is very high, both production design and visual effects. Not to mention the gorgeous cinematography, one of the most remarkable of the year, I hope it gets an Academy Awards nomination.

While Barry Keoghan and Joel Edgerton remain truly fascinating favorites of mine in this Arthurian tale. Unfortunately, The Green Knight does not seem bold enough in its convictions - sometimes leaving the depths of the nuances it posits unexplored. Instead, it focuses all its efforts on its styling, and its unusualness which it embraces tightly.

The movie occasionally seems drawn out and lingering, though that seems to be the overall idea and sadly it does so to a fault. In some scenes it is almost as if every character on screen is spaced-out, only set to deliver their lines. At the end, although simple and complete, this Lowery movie leaves you with a feeling of wanting. As if it ought to be, at the least, a more powerful movie but unfortunately, it isn't.

I'd love to see this world explored further too. It's really fascinating and balanced to the point where it feels like u're watching a historical piece which makes it much more believable. I love how the film is full of symbolism that you can spend hours discussing after the film is over. Its themes are also not something that's out in the open I believe. The Green Knight is a fantastic-looking movie that is incredibly well directed by Lowery. The cast does a phenomenal job as well with Patel cementing his status as a high-quality lead actor and Harris doing truly knocking it out of the park as an older King Arthur.

The only thing keeping this movie down for me are two different parts. The first was the entire interlude chapter, I felt it was a bit unnecessary and could have been cut to quicken things up a bit. The second is that there is a vision that happens in the movie that takes a little too long to reach the point that it needed to make. Slight flaws but it definitely affected the pacing a little bit.

Other than that, The Green Knight is a unique and satisfying experience, which is something we don't get a lot of anymore.

If you can't understand why this is bad, imagine a white actor as one of the tribe characters in the movie Apocalypto. It doesn't work because it's inherently forced. White people don't want to see a white actor playing a native, nor do black people want to see a black actor playing a caucasian. It's dumb.

Hollywood producers have this urge to insert random black characters into cultures where historically weren't none at the time, due to fear of "Hollywood Too White" label. They don't realize how racist this practice makes them look, so they'll have to learn the hard way.

Unlike the extreme edge of pretentiousness, director Lowery at least attempts to make the story watchable with bits of greatness that make it worth the effort if you appreciate cinema, albeit at an offensively slow pace (couldn't say the same for "Ghost Story", the other extreme of art-house trash that is somehow convincing modern critics to overlook the excessive pretentiousness in favor of a balanced approach). It is shot beautifully, very well acted, and actually well directed, but the pace and artsy vignettes are the death blow, with still shots and awkward sequences (a blindfolded woman just sitting in random places for the sake of "allegory", for example) that tend to take the reigns more often than they should. Head shrugging, to say the least, but it worked to convince the critics. Yet, as you can see based on the polarized audience reviews, anyone who doesn't buy into the pretentious notion of "I created an important work of cosmic art attempting to tap into the transcendent nature of reality" understandably found it a hopeless pursuit.

You are taking 130 minutes of an audiences time, it would be nice to take that into consideration when putting together the final cut. Otherwise, you're making the film for yourself, and giving it much more importance than is due (ostentatious obliviousness). Luckily the bits that are good make it worth the overall effort (if you are willing to sit through it).

Interesting cast, who have shown they have potential, however it all seemed muted, not enough of anything to make it good.

Films like this are not intended to be clever, so to think there's a higher level of attention needed, nah, don't fall for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are certainly two ways one can look at this movie. I will start from the perspective of person who have never read the poem:
-This movie is a solid piece of art, with some great thinking involved, and with good acting as well. However, this is where it stops.
As a person who read the poem and wrote a great essay on it, I am utterly disappointed. First things first, Arthur's sister is Indian? Come on. Also, Gawain is not the son of Morgana le Fay, but a son of Morgause according to the WHOLE Arthurian cycle, which Lowrey decided to disregard and just make a movie on ONE piece of work. Second of all, the scenes with bandints, giants, and a fox a made up, which would be fine if they actually brought something to the adaptation, but they did not, so I consider them useless in the sense of this movie. However, when the movie gets to the point which was actually in the poem, it fails there as well. The whole point of Gawain being in Bertilak's castle for 3 days was to show how Gawain is able to resist temptations due to him being a knight and keep his honor in not sleeping with Lord Bertilak's wife. In the poem, the author demonstrates hunting scenes, where hunters have to choose different methods to achieve success when hunting different animals, namely - fallow deer, wild boar, and a fox. Moreover, the author shows scenes in which the wife of the owner of the castle tries to woo Gawain in various ways. While these two events do not seem related to each other, there are similarities between them, and the animals that are hunted seem to symbolize the lady's behavior towards Gawain. This is the most important part of the story, but it was TOTALLY missed by Lowrey for some reason. Therefore, the ending of the story was not on point as well, as it technically does not show Gawain's fate after his encounter with The Green Knight. In the poem, though, the knight strikes three times but only hits Gawain once for not giving him the green belt. At this point it turns out that The Green Knight is actually Lord of the castle himself, which was the ENTIRE point of the castle part. 3/10 for me as to being not a very good (at all) adaptation, but still being a decent movie, hence the three points.

'Is this... really all there is?''

''What else ought to be?''

I've heard of this story, although I've never read it, therefore, what I can allow myself as an explanation is that The Green Knight on film is not an extraordinary story.
After all, what is seen and played out is a very basic portrayal of a young man basically finding his courage on his journey to greatness, while also becoming a man in the process.

This is a story that has been seen on several occasions, and what this film proposes in its final sequence is, in my opinion, understanding how that bravery means nothing, if you don't learn from the experience.

That sequence being a vision, shows us the future of the lead character who, by escaping from his bargain, gains power, but ends up as a reviled and abandoned king, who ends up losing his kingdom and ultimately ends up dead. Like everything.

So what makes The Green Knight different? Well, frankly different wouldn't be an adequate definition.
The Green Knight is a great movie for the way it's made.

It's a visual feast, loaded with extremely strong symbolism and hidden meanings.
Its idea and concept is to create a fantastic atmosphere through those elements and I think it does quite well in that regard.

It's a long, passive and slow movie, yet my attention never wavered.
Of course it will be called presumptuous and pretentious, and it is, but it's also a great cinematic achievement, and I think the film provides more than enough elements to justify being that way.

It's not a perfect film, but it's impeccable.
Certainly made for a small niche of viewers, and as elitist as that may sound, if it's not your thing, it ain't your thing. It's fine.
But if you give it a chance, then great.

The film is a unique, fantasy re-telling of the Medieval Arthurian tale, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Sir Gawain, top form & attractively played by actor Dev Patel, is King Arthur's foolhardy nephew, who goes on a quest to take down the Green Knight in order to obtain both his courage and gain favor in the eyes of the King. Along the journey, Sir Gawain is faced with obstacles, including thieves, ghosts, sci-fi looking giants and sexually charged nefarious characters. Very good in their supporting roles are Alicia Vikander (dual role Essel/The Lady), Joel Edgerton (The Lord) and Sarita Choudhury (Morgan le Fay-Gawain's Mother). Just wish there was a jovial scene or two where the characters actually spoke in a normal voice instead of hushed whispers. But it is quite possible to have a deep understanding of the possibilities of convention breaking cinema, yet still regard The Green Knight as pretentious and hollow. For some reason, many film critics, perhaps starved of genuine new visionaries, have latched on to Lowery as a new 'voice' who has at least has the outward appearance of being fresh and profound.

Why does Lynch's voice seem so strange yet also so very effective? Somehow, the specifics of his craft combine with a sensibility that commands your attention. One of the problems with Lowery is his craft actually obstructs your engagement. Overly showy shots and excessive reliance on cross-cut editing undermine the sense of engagement with the overall concept and give the film the consistency of a high level music video. The film also asserts its own greatness with an insistent score that has more in common with conventional Hollywood underscoring than it thinks. Lowery wants you to feel the impact of every image, yet you are never given the opportunity to engage, even on a subconscious level, as the film rarely settles long enough on any scene to be immersive, preferring to restlessly cut away. So the film feels both slow and very rushed at the same time.

Unfortunately, whatever his intention was, Lowery's vision does not reach a level where it feels even necessary to analyse his interpretation of the original poem. Dev Patel is good though.

For me, it was a pallid, joyless affair that stitched together sequences of blunt metaphors without much care for what their purpose was or whether they made narrative sense.

I like the source material, although I wouldn't be against modifying it. Here though, the original themes are thrown out and just a little of the setting is roughly used.

The pompous arthouse titlecards are the cherry on top. I don't need enormous blocks of art noveau text announcing a twee intertitle every ten minutes, thank you.

To reviewers who say anything along the lines of "The people who gave this movie a bad review were mad that they had to use their brains for once," you're the emperor in his new clothes, but without the imperial title. I guess you're just naked idiots.

People who like this movie and don't feel the need to bag on others, you're cool.

The premise is "King Arthur's headstrong nephewI love the Arthurian legend but most stories concerning it in TV and film is mostly about the titular King Arthur. However, The Green Knight is focused on one of the knights instead, Sir Gawain. The premise is "King Arthur's headstrong nephew embarks on a daring quest to confront the Green Knight, a mysterious giant who appears at Camelot. Risking his head, he sets off on an epic adventure to prove himself before his family and court". So is Sir Gawain's story worth telling or should we just go back to King Arthur?

Firstly, this movie is visually stunning. The cinematography by Andrew Droz Palermo is gorgeous and very magical. Almost every single shot in this film is like a painting and that alone makes it feel very fantastical. The lighting is also something to admire. At the beginning of the journey is a dreary, gloomy colour of the towns but it then goes to the green and grey forest that feels haunting yet beautiful. As the movie progress, it starts to become more colourful to signify the journey's end but also the more fantasy elements. The world itself is so interesting to watch as well. Many weird magical elements occur in this (that I won't spoil) that is just so oddly fascinating to watch. The music score by Daniel Hart is also phenomenal. It always complements the scene, the story and the world of The Green Knight. It is occasionally eerie but also sometimes has a fantastical flair to it that is just a blessing to listen to.

Dev Patel is the main lead and plays Sir Gawain. He does an amazing job as he perfectly conveys the struggle and the toll this journey takes on Gawain. Ralph Ineson is also remarkable as the Green Knight as Ralph gives a powerful voice that feels creepy but not downright villainous that exactly fits the character. The rest of the supporting cast all do a good job as well. Special mention goes to Sean Harris as the King who gives a convincing wise old man performance and Barry Keoghan who is just very ominous in his performance. Another thing I love about this film is the real mystery throughout the story. There are a fair amount of obstacles and weird scenarios that occur in Gawain's journey that are just intriguing to dissect. You end up questioning a lot about what is real or not. The film never outright explains everything, so it is up to us to try and solve or interpret the trials which are enjoyable to do. There is also the constant theme about honour and bravery that sounds simple on paper but is handle here in a more provocative manner that just works. However, the film not explaining everything results in way too many questions. The movie doesn't even explain why the Green Knight exist or why it is even there? The film does imply that it was the result of witches but if this is the case then what was the motive of the witches in doing that? Not explaining the titular character's is very problematic as now we have to go through assumptions of their motive instead of a proper confirmation. There is also a lot of just weird stuff that happens with no proper explanation and you're just going to have to accept it when watching this. Due to this, I can understand The Green Knight turning people off because it is intentionally vague on nearly everything. Additionally, this is an incredibly slow-burning movie. It goes at a very slow snail pace with a lot of scenes of Gawain walking or riding or even just genuinely nothing. The Green Knight is at 130 minutes long and honestly, it didn't need to be that long considering the number of shots of literally nothing.

Overall, The Green Knight is not a movie for everyone. It is an artistic and slow movie but it is a very unique movie that tells a profound story about honour. Well, that is how I interpret it and if you watch this then you may interpret it differently. Sir Gawain's story was an interesting one and I hope for tales like this from the Arthurian legend.

Just awful. I love Dev Patel, but this was near unwatchable. If you are expecting action, great special effects, and a clear plot/story, stay far, far away. If those things don't matter to you, then The Green Knight is your movie.

This is a terrible movie and the casting doesn't make any sense. This is a mockery of religion and everything that made these stories great.

The movie is just perfect on its own, magical and beautiful, with some of the best shots i've seen in my whole life. Beautifully crafted

I love the original, classic tale, and while this version pads it with what is not told in that, it sticks to the main plot at its core. The world built hereI love the original, classic tale, and while this version pads it with what is not told in that, it sticks to the main plot at its core. It's a wonderfully stylized version of that, creating a world that oozes mythology. The world built here seems to team with ghosts, tales, and the superstition of the time in which it's set. Gorgeous to look at, well-acted, and well-directed, I got lost in this world (barring the terrible cgi fox). While it sticks to that original story, the added depth, especially near the end, reminds me of The Last Temptation of Christ. That's not a bad thing, though it is a tad unoriginal, and kinda mucks up the theme of the chivalric poem. Still, this is something you won't often see in today's cinema and worth the time. Expand

The movie itself is beautiful, the characters/actors/acting/sets/scenery all the toppest of top notch, but the story is almost empty, like a ghost of a movie that could have been. This is such a barebones recreation (with changes) from the original 700 year old poem, they could have fleshed it all out, I mean they had sooo much to work with. As it was it was "nice", but could have been epic, they had all the working pieces already in place. A chance missed. Expand

David Lowery wrote and directed this film which is very visible because it's clear for me some scenes he saw in his head many many times and some story parts are just fillers. I'm still giving a score of 9 since we need more films like this. Expand

I loved “Sword of the Valiant” and the Sean Connery titular cameo and with the little I know of the Gawain mythos I couldn’t wait to see this new version. I’d say that this movie started out with such high promise with great atmosphere, costumes and wildly excellent sets. I would have given it an 8 or higher if it kept the energy it had up to the scene when the Green Knight makes his exit. After that it just goes down hill losing momentum, and half of a point from my score, nearly every 15-20 minutes. For how much the movie “insists on itself” it had nothing to say really. All it does is meander without any meaning till it’s dull end. I guess some viewers could see some parallels in current social politics here and there. However, if the film makers are intentionally doing this here it doesn’t holdup against the backdrop of the Arthurian legend. Alongside that the movie has some awful edits, terrible and unreadable reoccurring title cards and some questionable cinematography. I’m pretty sure I saw several “mistakes” that took me out of the film. Some of which felt like the kind of thing that a film student would have made and left on their thesis for “authenticity.” I’m not sure if the acting was good or bad because I was more bored then anything else by the end. The music and sound design are amazing and yet distracting at the same time. This is one of the times that without the strong score the film would have suffered and you wouldn’t have known what the film markers where trying to achieve. Overall it’s not a soundtrack that I’d be interested in as it barrows heavily from the sources that it aspires to be. I’m glad I watched it and oddly I think that most others will be as well. If anything it’s unique yet inoffensive even when it’s trying to be. For a film set in very tumultuous times and has gruesome tales within it’s own story, it only shows/tells it in the most uninteresting and uninspired way. Expand

One of the top best three films of 2021 in my opinion. Pros:
- Amazing images.
- Sound and music.
- A story of past understanding of honor. Cons:
- It drags at certain points (but not as bad as in A Ghost Story).

Which is something that undoubtedly contributes to some of the recurring confusion associated with director David Lowery's latest take on these storied characters. In drawing from multiple source materials, the filmmaker appears to have come up with his own version of this legend, one that, in typical Lowery fashion, is not always the easiest to follow without making some assumptions and entering the theater with considerable foreknowledge of the subject matter. Even those somewhat familiar with the mythology may find themselves confused when they witness some events unfold that don't appear to jibe with whatever knowledge they may already possess. Add to that a number of protracted sequences that should have been heavily edited (especially in the dreadfully dull opening 30 minutes), and viewers are left with quite a frustrating movie experience. To its credit, some sequences are skillfully handled (such as those involving Barry Keoghan in a superb supporting performance), and a number of thematic issues are deftly raised and discussed. Dev Patel's portrayal of the intrepid hero is also commendable, a role that, at first glance, may seem like an unusual casting choice. But, considering how much of this film seems to leave audiences (even informed ones) in the dark, one can't help but wonder why the director makes his pictures so needlessly difficult to fathom. While it's understandable that spoon-feeding is certainly unacceptable, the same can be said for being excessively cryptic, a quality that seems to characterize -- and plague -- this filmmaker's work. This movie was visually stunning and yet so boring. Only English majors who minor in folk lore might like this. It’s the most boring slow paced movie. Do not see it.

To be honest, three of us watched it and one held up his phone through most of the movie and played with it. Maybe he was bootlegging it. If he was, I would tell him it wasn’t worth the effort. It just annoyed the rest of us. This was a long, bloated, mostly in-your-face movie (and we were sitting in the back of the auditorium) about coming-of-age or ancient adventure or something like that. The sets and costumes were not particularly interesting, the plot was not particularly interesting (just meandering), the performances were not particularly interesting. I am desperately trying to figure out why I am even giving this one star. Nice color palette? Big screen? Pity maybe? Expand
