Based on the novel of the same name, The Godfather focuses on the powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone.

Whilst I must admit that I wouldn’t rank this movie amongst my all-time favourites, partly because at three-hours in length it does drag a little in places, it is undeniably an epic piece of cinema. The script is excellent and it’s all brought to life by incredible performances from the entire cast, meaning that this still stands up fifty years after its initial release.

Oversaturated withThe Godfather, hailed by many as a masterpiece and even the "greatest film ever made", serves as a glaring exemplification of the broad chasm between popular perception and the harsh realities of cinematic mediocrity. Oversaturated with lengthy, dialogue-ridden sequences and an excess of poorly executed symbolism, Francis Ford Coppola's alleged magnum opus falls tragically short of its revered status.

From the very first frames, the Godfather immerses the viewer in a relentless drudgery that will numb even the most patient film connoisseur. Instead of engaging audiences with brisk storytelling and gripping action, Coppola elects to drag us through a languorous three-hour mafia epic. You may find yourself regularly checking your watch, wondering when the end credits will arrive.

The characters, hailed by many as intricate and well-developed, are instead an ensemble of monotonous archetypes, masquerading as complex individuals. Marlon Brando’s Vito Corleone, while celebrated for his mumbling and inaudible diction, offers little more than a tired caricature of a mob boss, while Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone lacks a compelling arc, transforming from a moral outsider to a cold-hearted don in the blink of an eye, leaving little room for nuance or relatability.

Coppola's direction is equally as lackluster. His use of low-lighting scenes, supposedly to add depth and mystery, merely blurs detail and confuses the viewer. What critics mistake for "stylistic choices," come across as glaring technical ineptitude. The acclaimed Godfather Waltz, a repetitive, mournful piece of orchestral music, only adds to the already heavy-handed tone, doing little to alleviate the film's overall tedium.

The Godfather’s narrative, loosely strung together by a series of underwhelming mob hits and family squabbles, often wanders into the realm of pointlessness. Instead of serving as a poignant critique of the American dream, it drowns in its own grandeur, ultimately amounting to little more than a caricature of the very thing it sought to depict.

In the end, The Godfather feels more like a long-winded bore, a film that not only overpromises and underdelivers, but audaciously demands respect and reverence for its contribution to cinema. It’s a languid, overly-indulgent piece that relies on the audience's patience and tolerance for dull, drawn-out sequences. Despite its universal acclaim, The Godfather stands as a testament to how the sheen of nostalgia and the weight of collective opinion can crown a painfully average film as the pinnacle of cinematic excellence. It is a troublingly clear example of just how misguided the concept of the 'popular masterpiece' can be.

I could use the word of our Lord and personal savior but that in reality would only Sully his preciousness, and if i use the name of the creator then it would mean i have no respect for him, when it came down to earth the messing up of humansI could use the word of our Lord and personal savior but that in reality would only Sully his preciousness, and if i use the name of the creator then it would mean i have no respect for him, when it came down to earth the messing up of humans and power can only boil down to the chosen ones, they can deny it all they want but leaving everything up to time only makes it harder stronger and when the dust finally settles the view becomes clear and then acceptance is paramount, judging by the way it all started no amount of action can rival the potency of the one called the godfather that's the highest ranking human in the world, not to make it personal but that's something to keep an eye out for, in my regards don't toy with the godfather. From start to finish, the Godfather is a captivating masterpiece that I will never forget. Michael's journey from a pathetic coward to a strong, cold mafia boss is the highlight of the movie for sure. The only major problem is that there's too many god damn characters. I can barely even keep track of it. A lot of them feel expendable. Expand

TheThe Godfather is a film that's been praised for its impact on cinema history, but in reality, it's an overrated and poorly made movie. The story is dull and unengaging, with characters that are impossible to connect with or care about. The pacing is slow and plodding, making the film feel like it's dragging on forever.

The acting is also subpar, with actors delivering their lines with all the emotion of a brick wall. The dialogue is clunky and uninspired, with no memorable or quotable lines to speak of. The film also lacks any real sense of tension or excitement, making it a chore to sit through.

The cinematography is nothing special, with bland and forgettable shots that do nothing to add to the film's atmosphere. The soundtrack is also unremarkable, with forgettable music that fails to enhance the movie in any meaningful way.

Overall, The Godfather is a film that's more hype than substance. It's a boring, forgettable movie that fails to live up to its reputation as a cinematic masterpiece. Save yourself the time and watch something else instead.

The episodic story is mostly quiet and deliberately paced, punctuated effectively with sudden violence. The cast is excellent, except for James Caan, who simply can't act (his Italian American shtick is almost minstrel-show level) and horrifies us with his gross shoulder and back hair.

For all its excellence, the movie pioneered some less-than-welcome trends Coppola and his generation would bring to movie making:

1. The absence of interesting female characters. As in JAWS, EASY RIDER, BUTCH CASSIDY, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARC, etc. women barely exist in these stories.

2. Capitalism = gangsterism. Organized crime and regular businesses are portrayed as basically the same. Senators, judges, and governors are no different than violent thugs. The "American dream" is a pretty name for racism and oppression. Baby boomers picked up these foolish ideas from their 1930s socialist college professors and they've been a Hollywood cliché ever since. The fact that so many Hollywood honchos ARE corrupt endlessly feeds filmmakers' silly implication that all businessmen are thugs.

3. Boomer cynicism. Baby boomers emerged flinging contempt in all directions, believing themselves to be the first generation in human history to properly recognize and judge immorality. This tendency gave birth to the harsh, unforgiving hate and bullying of "cancel culture" today and -- so much for its moral virtue -- gave license to several generations to lie, cheat and steal because the movies show us that EVERYONE does. (Only everyone doesn't.)

So yes, THE GODFATHER is iconic, a massive hit, very influential and well crafted on every level. But it also embodied and popularized some regrettable trends in film and pop culture.

There are soThere is very little that I can add to the reviews on here, that have explained what is so wonderful about The Godfather so well. I have seen many amazing movies, as well as some clunkers, but The Godfather was beyond amazing. There are so many images, details and scenes that I seriously cannot get out of my head since watching it for the first time just nine hours ago. The Godfather is so incredibly well-made and acted that it stands out among the rest of those other amazing films I've seen, so much so I couldn't think of a single flaw, and I am struggling to think of a good enough reason to why I didn't see this film before now.

True, The Godfather is a little slow-moving and the plot takes a while to unfold, but neither of these are flaws as such. The slow pacing added to the elegiac quality The Godfather has, and as for the plot what is special about this plot is that it is very unpredictable because you have next to no idea where it is next going to take you. Being 18, I was worried whether I was old enough to appreciate this film or even understand it, but luckily I understood it perfectly, and I can well and truly appreciate it for the masterpiece it is considered to be.

The Godfather for one thing looks stunning. I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer who said the cinematography was horrid, for me the cinematography was one of the best assets of the film. In some scenes you have cinematography and lighting that is quite dark and mysterious, and then in scenes such as the wedding it is evergreen, autumnal and very picturesque. It is not just the cinematography that makes The Godfather look stunning, the costumes are beautifully tailored, the houses are gorgeous and majestic to look at and even the cars were immaculate.

Then there is the score by Nina Rota. One word, outstanding! I have heard many wonderful scores in my lifetime, but after hearing this score few stick in the memory as much as the score for The Godfather. This score is both beautiful as seen with the main theme, and haunting in the way it sticks in your head after watching the film itself. Other outstanding assets are the masterly direction from Francis Ford Coppola, and the brilliantly written screenplay that is intelligent, thought-provoking and darkly humorous. As for the violence, some of it is shocking and intense especially in the climax which was enough to almost make your heart either beat twice as fast or stop, and I almost covered my eyes when the producer found the horse's head in his bed, but underneath that this family is somewhat loyal and honourable come to think of it.

The acting is absolutely fantastic, bringing to life characters that are rich and complex, perhaps unlikeable at first but as you get to know them you warm to them. And I have to say, The Godfather is one of those rarities where no actor gives a weak performance. In particular, Marlon Brando is brilliant as Don Vito, very heavily disguised yet stately. Every word of dialogue, every subtle hand gesture and every facial expression was brilliantly judged. Al Pacino's casting was admittedly risky, but he still did a truly wonderful job carrying the film, while James Caan is dignified and loyal, Diane Keaton beautiful and alluring and Robert Duvall nicely understated.

In conclusion, absolutely amazing, and I can see completely why it is considered one of the 10 greatest movies ever made, it is that good. In fact my 15-year old brother loved it so much, he wants to see it again. 10/10, though this film is too good for that rating. Bethany Cox

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a cool gangster movie. The story is very good and shows the development of Michael the son of the current boss of the Italian Mafia. He went from a teenager to a cold-hearted gangster boss.

But IMO the movie has some flaws, first, he is confusing as hell because there are lots of characters interacting with each other and you can't identify who is doing what and why. Probably watching for the 2nd time should be better. Also, I didn't like how easily they can kill any character, even the other boss, they appear to be killed like nothing in the end. It is a cool scene indeed, but it makes me question if they were a threat so big, since they were killed so easily.

I dare Hollywood not to remake one of the most important movies that still can be talked for a generation. The Godfather, the Citizen Kane of Gangster movies, and of course, the J.R. Ewing of American cinema.

An absolute masterpiece from its first frame tell the last. Coppola brought nuance and humanity to this world, while also bringing melancholy and grandiosity to the style.

Not having read the novels, I have to say that the "Godfather" tells the story incredibly well. It is indeed long, but so well performed, that the slow paste doesn't really affect it. Moreover, the acting is at its finest.

I always start feeling drowsy while watching them. Not only is the camera quality too bleak, but the accent of the time was also very illegible. But this one was fun to watch. I saw it on Prime Video and took multiple sittings to watch this. I finished it 6 months ago but I remember seeing it like it was yesterday. Being from India, I have always thought of 70's films to be very family friendly and musical. But this isn't one of them. This one, in simple words, is metal.
The Godfather is probably what has inspired an entire genre of crime films. It is like what Star Wars is to fantasy, or what Superman is to the superhero genre (man, all 70's films have been so revolutionary in Hollywood). The whole idea of two groups of mafia fighting out each other in the most brutal way possible gave rise to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Gangs of Wasseypur, the Mafia game trilogy, and even this film's two sequels. That is the amount of cultural impact this film has left. Don Corleone has become a household name now.
The action scenes, the music, the acting, everything is legendary. I legit screamed at the scene where they put the horse's head in that man's bed. We see many times people learning acting by watching The Godfather films. The only problem I had, however, was what I said in the beginning of the review. The sound is not clear at all. When Vito Corleone speaks he sounds like he is swishing saliva in his mouth like a washing machine. It almost feels like the captions are saying something completely different from what the captions are saying. I finally gave up and switched to Hindi because the English ADR was so bad.
I really wish The Godfather was a standalone film. It has one of the most satisfying ending in all the old films. It really didn't need those terrible sequels which don't even have a Hindi dub. Although it has been almost 50 years since it released, it still feels like it would spark outrage among certain sections if a Bollywood adaptation would be made. Definitely way ahead of its time. I would have recommended it to everyone, except everyone I know is either not interested in cinematography or has already seen it.

The actor Al Pacino, who played Michael Corleone, performed a perfect job, and the godfather himself is definitely worth mentioning. Overall, all the actors did an excellent performance here. There are a lot of legendary scenes. The scene in Italy is one of the best and maybe the best scene of all the movies ever. There is also a soundtrack, which is masterful and it is one of the best soundtracks ever. Also maybe the best ever. The Godfather is MASTERPIECE and it's a MUST-SEE movie. Expand

Its attention to detail, history, and tradition. An absolutely wonderful screenplay. Its comparative closeness to the novel and a storyline which became the template for future stories in this genre. As for the performances: there is not one single character flaw in this entire cast. What continues to amaze me about this film more than any other is the fact that not only were the correct actors and actresses chosen for the roles but that they were each chosen at the perfect point in their respective careers. Throughout this film, there is not one actor nor actress who seems "too old or young for the part". Nor does anyone (including an extremely strong Diane Keaton) seem "out of place" or "unconvincing". The plot and storyline could not have been better and this is one film that no matter how many times you've seen it, it still continues to amaze, entertain, and (in some ways) inform. Like some of the classics which preceded it, it holds up very well over time and will probably continue to do so. I currently own on VHS "The Godfather Saga" (the first 2 movies woven together in chronological order) which is absolutely amazing. It begins with the birth of Vito and ends with the eventual rise of Michael. Although Francis Ford Coppola does not like this version of his epic, I sure wish he would release it on DVD. Expand
