Pitifully boring, tragically trite...Neil Marshall disappoints with this one-dimensional estrogen-fest

How unusual to watch a horror film that actually delivers. Great camerawork, editing, acting and sound plus just the right amount of grand guignol in the final act. Plus a hauntingly downbeat ending. Marshall's the man.

The pacing is great and it really lets you absorb the "scenery." Unfortunately, once it is revealed what exactly lurks in the cave, the film loses steam, and what wants to be an intense climax seems somewhat rushed. Has it's fair share of scary moments, but it's kind of a one trick pony. I guess there's only so much you could do in a cave. Fortunately the ending is so great it made me forget about most of the flaws. Expand

There are some plot holes for those that can't suspend disbelief, but that is very minor compared to the overall emotion and fear this movie will create at times. The unique thing about this movie is unlike the horror movies of the 70s and 80s, these girls aren't exactly helpless damsels. That also is what makes it emotional because their heroics, for most, will be in vain. The creatures at first are horrifying, but near the end I found them becoming "video gamed" up. The girls could meet one challenge so now we give you two creatures...then more...it took away from the movies better scenes of girl vs. the unknown in the dark. I guess the best sign that this movie was good, was that I was glad it was over and secretly felt I had to get on the internet just to see the actors were ok because you feel close to the characters they played. Good fun, those that are afraid of caves may hate the panic attack moments in this movie though. Expand

Most parts of the plot were too far over the top and I kept getting confused between the characters since they look similar and half the time you couldn't see them. The last second of the movie is ridiculous. Oh, and the gore factor is relatively high, in case you were wondering...makes me curious about the original ending that was changed for audiences here in the states. Part of what makes watching horror movies, good or bad, with an audience so much fun is occasionally getting to hear some of them talk to the characters onscreen, usually offering such tips as "Don't go in there/ out there/ up there!!" or some variation. The Descent definitely qualifies as the ultimate "Don't go DOWN there!!" movie. Six outdoorswomen, including one who survived an astonishing tragedy and another who's quite reminiscent of a distaff Burt Reynolds from Deliverance, only even more unduly cocky and wrongheaded, explore an unknown cave and find that being trapped inside it constitutes the LEAST of their troubles. Writer/ director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, and absolutely no relation to Pretty Woman's Garry M.) has come up with an instant genre classic that's relatively light on explicit gore (at least by 2006 R-rated horror movie standards), replacing some of it with great use of naturalistic underground light sources (or their lack thereof) to really ramp up the tension; it's a testament to Marshall's confidence and skill that even though you don't always see everything that's happening onscreen, you're amazingly never in doubt as to what's going on. Marshall is an excellent student of the horror genre, expertly weaving together visual and audio cues, themes and motifs familiar to fans of Alien, Predator, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Final Destination and even Carrie while still making a genuine original. My one cavil with Marshall is that of the six spelunkers, only Sarah and Juno come across as well-developed characters; the other four serve, more or less, as potential raw meat. If Marshall has been studying the work of George A. Romero, who always took the trouble to individualize even the zombie victims with the least amount of screen time in his Living Dead quadrology, then it's time to take a few more lessons! Nevertheless, The Descent is otherwise a smart, sweaty, scary and intensely suspenseful little gem in which Marshall even compensates for the Britishness of his characters and cast (even though the movie mostly takes place in the Appalachian mountains) by making their differing driving habits a subtle part of the plot, and he cleverly turns the potentially cliched final minute into something that can actually be interpreted two different ways! Most of all, though, The Descent proves beyond question why camping, hiking, rafting or other outdoor expeditions are best left to Reynolds and Jon Voight in Deliverance, Keith Carradine and Powers Boothe in Southern Comfort, Joe Pesci and Danny Glover in Gone Fishin'...in short, anybody and everybody but me! Someone mentioned that the camera work is jarring and that the gore doesn't last long. It's this "jarring" and fleeting image work that makes this film riveting. Besides, I don't need to see the creatures devouring someone's stomach while they are still alive for 20 seconds. The creatures MAY resemble Golum in some way but, really, they don't. What you have here is a well-acted, well-constructed, well-executed horror film. Strongly atmospheric with several phenomenal scares that even caught me, and I consider myself a pretty stalwart guy, by surprise. It's truly a must see...ESPECIALLY in theaters. Expand

At a guess I would have to say those who claim this film to be 'boring' may well be a bunch of sugar-addicted 12-year-olds who require explosions and/or gratuitous nudity every 5 minutes in order to hold their feeble attention spans. This film works because of the constant cranking up of the tension not because of constant bangs and flashes. Expand

Passes the Bechdel test with flying colors, and yet totally fails at providing any realistic feeling female characters. Big themes to tick off: Death, Grief, Friendship / Frenemies, Patriarchy, and Menstrual Blood. Literal pools of blood.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is it a metaphor for all the backstabbing women do among their friend circles?

That this movie is considered a horror masterpiece is evidence that good horror movies are so few and far between that they'll grasp at films like this to try to fill the title. I also don't understand all the fuss about it being an all female cast. It did nothing for the film. This film follows a very similar character arc for its protagonist as 28 days later and feels as if it steals a lot of moments from that film but in a much more hamfisted way. The strength of the film is in its cinematography and score. The story and performances are basically par for a horror film, and the editing at times is atrocious. I couldn't care less what happened to any of the characters because they weren't distinct enough. They all felt generic and similar, even as far as appearances. The monsters look ridiculous and not scary. It feels absurd that women with half the muscle size are able to throw them around and destroy them with their bare hands, but only when it suits the plot. Other moments the monsters easily overpower everybody. There's no strategy or consistency. The protagonist's decision to murder her own friend over her misunderstanding that she accidentally killed another friend is absurd, as absurd as it is that Juno didn't just admit it was an accident, leaving room for doubt that she killed her. Why would she? What motive did she have at all? Nothing was set up in the story to suggest why she would do that. All she had to do was say it was dark and they were fighting those creatures and she accidentally stabbed her. Is that so bad given the circumstances? I don't know, but the surprise ending was even dumber. I guess our hero is haunted by the guilt at what she did. Then why did she do it? What good did it do? Also, this film had so many unnecessary fake out jump scares, the telltale sign of **** unintelligent horror.

Stupid movie for unthinking minds. I rate it a 1 for the atmosphere but that's about the only thing this film does right.

From here we get some decent world building and character development, although it still seems quite forced. The cast had decided on spelunking as their yearly endeavor. As they are headed towards the cave they had picked out, some members of the party remark that this is not the correct path, it's too late, however, as it is only realized that this was the wrong cave after they had already entered. Despite this being revealed the girls are still coaxed into going deeper into this cave, that they now know is uncharted territory.
As they make their way down and out into the cave, the path behind the gets blocked off due to falling debris. Not long after this, they discover that this "uncharted" cave might not be so uncharted after all, since they find antiquated climbing gear tucked into the crevices of the cave's roof. At this point, they are running out of oxygen, and resources and the majority of the girls are scraped and/or exhausted. It doesn't help that they find a source that appears to be daylight, only for one of them to fall down a hole and break her leg. As the party descends to assist their fallen comrade, they start to hear noises emanating from the caverns that they, themselves, are now engulfed in. Soon after, they find what appears to be a neolithic map of the cave system etched into a wall, so they decide to split up to look for clues. At this point, they are starting to turn on one another, especially the mastermind of the operation, who was responsible for them being there in the first place, who is especially desperate to escape. It is here that the movie's monsters are introduced, these being the "crawlers", bat-like creatures with a bipedal figure, and sharp lusting teeth. The last third of the movie plays out extremely fast-paced and is most certainly engaging, with very iconic imagery. In the original cut, there were no survivors, all either being eaten or killed by one another, however for widespread release (American audiences), this was changed so that the protagonist escapes. The choreography is outstanding, and the effects and stage set was really believable, and the use of negative space really helped build the feeling of being both trapped and alone.
Despite this, the movie is not in any case flawless, the swarm of bats looked really fake as they flew from the cave. And quite a few things either felt like they happened for the convenience of the plot or just to generate a cheap scare. Logistically I am not sure why the crawlers don't feel the heat of the torch that our protagonist held mere inches away from.
I recommend this to any fan of horror, as it is certainly one of the best horror films of the decade. Overall, this is an engaging and almost palpably real experience, that I will definitely revisit.

The first cave survivor movie I've seen. It's like Wrong Turn movie. I like this quote "I'm an English teacher, not **** Tomb Raider."

A filmA flawed but generally well made film consisting of beautifully imperfect characters and a gnarly, yet repetitive and predictable, creature feature. The effects in the film were low budget, but usually done well with little to no CGI. A film of this sort keeps a good tension; one that is rarely released due to the claustrophobic setting and plot. Some of the direction felt uneven and messy, with a “twist” near the end seeming extremely full of itself, but the well crafted characters and decent performances kept the film from collapsing. Overall, a decent, suspenseful horror flick with some enjoyably gruesome creature kills and an enjoyable-to-watch cast to tug them along. Expand

The Descent is a visceral, magnetic ride that grabs you from the opening scene. It uses a likable cast as well as very intense cinematography and direction to drag you into the caves with them.

Tense, claustrophobic and atmospheric The Descent is top notch film making and all kudos must go to the excellent cast and crew who restore the faith in independent cinema. A gang of girls come together for an underground cave trek after a tragedy befalls a few of them. As they descend there is a sense of dread and the director so magnificently shows and makes us feel this. In the darkness with only bulbs and artificial lights one by one things start to go awry. I won't spoil this for the reader, but this is one of the most unique and original films I can think of. What happened to the director Neil Marshall after this I will never understand. But the Descent is a once in a lifetime fantastic filmmaking and he achieved that. Top cinema.(You will never go cave trekking after this). Expand

This movie is pretty great. All the chicks kick ass. Has probably the best claustrophobia inducing scene in any movie.

A sufficient horror movie, because it is so interestingly constructed, and Marshall has great talents.
