But unless the cast in The Descent is not remarkable at all and that's it. The Descent is able to captivate the viewer for 100 minutes, which Cave did not succeed in my opinion. Yes, here everything is filmed simply and cheaply. But suspense is the most important thing? And here it is and is balanced throughout the film. I advise everyone to watch who is interested in the topic of speleology and thrillers with closed spaces. And I definitely advise you to watch 2 part. This most of it is only half the film. Expand

A sufficient horror movie, because it is so interestingly constructed, and Marshall has great talents.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is it a metaphor for all the backstabbing women do among their friend circles?

That this movie is considered a horror masterpiece is evidence that good horror movies are so few and far between that they'll grasp at films like this to try to fill the title. I also don't understand all the fuss about it being an all female cast. It did nothing for the film. This film follows a very similar character arc for its protagonist as 28 days later and feels as if it steals a lot of moments from that film but in a much more hamfisted way. The strength of the film is in its cinematography and score. The story and performances are basically par for a horror film, and the editing at times is atrocious. I couldn't care less what happened to any of the characters because they weren't distinct enough. They all felt generic and similar, even as far as appearances. The monsters look ridiculous and not scary. It feels absurd that women with half the muscle size are able to throw them around and destroy them with their bare hands, but only when it suits the plot. Other moments the monsters easily overpower everybody. There's no strategy or consistency. The protagonist's decision to murder her own friend over her misunderstanding that she accidentally killed another friend is absurd, as absurd as it is that Juno didn't just admit it was an accident, leaving room for doubt that she killed her. Why would she? What motive did she have at all? Nothing was set up in the story to suggest why she would do that. All she had to do was say it was dark and they were fighting those creatures and she accidentally stabbed her. Is that so bad given the circumstances? I don't know, but the surprise ending was even dumber. I guess our hero is haunted by the guilt at what she did. Then why did she do it? What good did it do? Also, this film had so many unnecessary fake out jump scares, the telltale sign of **** unintelligent horror.

Stupid movie for unthinking minds. I rate it a 1 for the atmosphere but that's about the only thing this film does right.

Almost an anti-feminist polemic here. I know it's a classic horror trope, but six (five not counting Juno) scream queens is a bit much. Set up as six strong female characters, it takes no time for them to become **** hysterical, and stupid (so stupid) ... victims. I guess that's the point?

Passes the Bechdel test with flying colors, and yet totally fails at providing any realistic feeling female characters. Big themes to tick off: Death, Grief, Friendship / Frenemies, Patriarchy, and Menstrual Blood. Literal pools of blood.

Tense, claustrophobic and atmospheric The Descent is top notch film making and all kudos must go to the excellent cast and crew who restore the faith in independent cinema. A gang of girls come together for an underground cave trek after a tragedy befalls a few of them. As they descend there is a sense of dread and the director so magnificently shows and makes us feel this. In the darkness with only bulbs and artificial lights one by one things start to go awry. I won't spoil this for the reader, but this is one of the most unique and original films I can think of. What happened to the director Neil Marshall after this I will never understand. But the Descent is a once in a lifetime fantastic filmmaking and he achieved that. Top cinema.(You will never go cave trekking after this). Expand

The effects in the film were low budget, but usually done well with little to no CGI. A film of this sort keeps a good tension; one that is rarely released due to the claustrophobic setting and plot. Some of the direction felt uneven and messy, with a “twist” near the end seeming extremely full of itself, but the well crafted characters and decent performances kept the film from collapsing. Overall, a decent, suspenseful horror flick with some enjoyably gruesome creature kills and an enjoyable-to-watch cast to tug them along. Expand

From here we get some decent world building and character development, although it still seems quite forced. The cast had decided on spelunking as their yearly endeavor. As they are headed towards the cave they had picked out, some members of the party remark that this is not the correct path, it's too late, however, as it is only realized that this was the wrong cave after they had already entered. Despite this being revealed the girls are still coaxed into going deeper into this cave, that they now know is uncharted territory.
As they make their way down and out into the cave, the path behind the gets blocked off due to falling debris. Not long after this, they discover that this "uncharted" cave might not be so uncharted after all, since they find antiquated climbing gear tucked into the crevices of the cave's roof. At this point, they are running out of oxygen, and resources and the majority of the girls are scraped and/or exhausted. It doesn't help that they find a source that appears to be daylight, only for one of them to fall down a hole and break her leg. As the party descends to assist their fallen comrade, they start to hear noises emanating from the caverns that they, themselves, are now engulfed in. Soon after, they find what appears to be a neolithic map of the cave system etched into a wall, so they decide to split up to look for clues. At this point, they are starting to turn on one another, especially the mastermind of the operation, who was responsible for them being there in the first place, who is especially desperate to escape. It is here that the movie's monsters are introduced, these being the "crawlers", bat-like creatures with a bipedal figure, and sharp lusting teeth. The last third of the movie plays out extremely fast-paced and is most certainly engaging, with very iconic imagery. In the original cut, there were no survivors, all either being eaten or killed by one another, however for widespread release (American audiences), this was changed so that the protagonist escapes. The choreography is outstanding, and the effects and stage set was really believable, and the use of negative space really helped build the feeling of being both trapped and alone.
Despite this, the movie is not in any case flawless, the swarm of bats looked really fake as they flew from the cave. And quite a few things either felt like they happened for the convenience of the plot or just to generate a cheap scare. Logistically I am not sure why the crawlers don't feel the heat of the torch that our protagonist held mere inches away from.
I recommend this to any fan of horror, as it is certainly one of the best horror films of the decade. Overall, this is an engaging and almost palpably real experience, that I will definitely revisit.

But, when I looked at the reviews, I thought, if so many positive reviews, then something in this movie should be good. Probably, I need to watch the film more closely. Once again I began to look. Hardly watched 15 minutes more and could not anymore. I looked at another 30 minutes on fast forward and finally realized it was movie garbage. But whence then so many positive assessments? I see the list of reviews of the viewers and I see that one person (BittyR.) put more then 10 absolutely identical reviews at the same time with a maximum rating of 10. A lot of other reviews are put by other people, but for some reason they all look very much alike in content. This is an elementary scam. I think that in the list of assessments of professional critics there is also an element of scam. Apparently in 2006 this was possible. Otherwise, such a high evaluation of this movie-garbage can not be explained. Expand

Hi ! This movie is pure excellence, unlike the 'it's pure garbage' that I am
reading from people whom did not like it at all. I will respect others
opinions and if they fell it's an utter poss and it's 'the worst film I
ever saw in my life.. With that said. So back to my feelings on this. I
really can't understand people, I just don't...I'll try... I know it is
not a movie that tries to be Oscar-worthy with deep layers of morality
(there is some in this movie) around
a dramatic story. For horror ones (I despise this term I prefer
thriller/suspense with horror elements, I know this is high
categorizing which I don't like either, since it's pigeon holing, The
audience also forgets that there are over 50,000 movies, it's 'normal'
At some point, things can look similar when there are so many movies. ..so please cut some slack and
be considerate of how hard it is to make a movie. So with that,
further, said. I want to say this movies is pure excellence because it hits the right
notes : claustrophobia (some don't like that, hence hate the
movie..understandable, still this element raises the movies scare
factor), darkness (extremely important to increase the psychological
factor (who is isn't afraid of utter darkness - stuck in a cave?),
extremely impressive soundtrack and aural experience (the sound
designers made sure there is reverberation and 'cave echo' everywhere
in the movie (unlike in Descent 2, which is more flat sonic-ally and
greatly affects the viewers spatial situations effect (trapped in a
silent cave where every surround sound is heard in echo 3D surround
sound fashion. In fact, The Descent boasts an incredible 7.1 channels
instead of regular 5.1 (still great), the difference is massive, you
hear creatures behind you, (side left, side right) everywhere this
level of 3D surround sound 'envelopping/engulfing' effect is not heard
of in other horror movies, where you feel more a passive eye, here you
feel on the scene right in the cave - with the women.))), it features
all-women cast (new, but not,,but new enough - as spelunkers, very new
thus a originality), the creatures (which everyone laughs out as poor
man's version of 'ghollum troll' or some other 'fake *ss'
''costume-prosthetics''...great ''prosthetics'', like great '3D CGI', as a tool, have their place and I don't think the
'bareness' of these cave creatures should be so dismissed (''a 'naked
dude' with a 'ghollum mask'...nice..very scary.not.''). For me, the
first part is a slow build-up, and the best one, I saw this at Fantasia
in 2005, it took my breath away (No movie had done this in at least 20
years time, since the first Alien, and this movie is an homage to it
also, Mr.Marshall said that he was inspired by these great horror
movies such as the terrifying and slow potboiler Alien 1 of Mr.Scott),
I remember looking at these women fighting the Cave, fighting
themselves (friendships dissolve as they are now - each fending for
themselves), fighting death (pure survival), fighting creatures (yeah
OK they don't exist - its a 'FICTION' read that word/Calm down with the
'it doesn't make sense/it's stupid and nonsensical brainless movie'
accusation and an Excellent at that, but still they are late enough and
have a certain degree of 'fitting in', it 'could' be possible (even if
some said, these creatures would have evolved outside the cave/left
it...not necessarily, they could have evolved Inside), When they face
the pits/chasm it's utterly terrifying (to try to cross over and not
fall to their death), the cave is so mean and unforgiving. Mr.Marshall uses important elements like coloring palette (he uses red during deadly scenes, green in more danger-free scenes, important red flare lighting and deep shadows blacks darkness to hide the elements and enhance utter fear) scares (great) hate the 'jumpscare' 'boo! a flying cat!' categorization..you do not scare someone - with ONLY dread, you need higher than that, 'jump' scares are that element that TAKE people by SURPRISE, you need it, you may despise it but it's a reality, to scare you, you need to be startled. The actress are incredible and heightened the fear (they are screaming, emotions and full of tears, you know this could BE YOU in the cave, surviving). , the scares are extremely well made with musical accents (staccato) but the whole movie is almost in surround silence (we only hear the surrounding noise of the cave and women's footsteps echos- frightening), there is utter viscerally and 'fight to the death' to live. It's a story of pure survival (blood, gore is never just for the sake, they really fight to death and he makes sure we feel the grittiness of the survival. The cave is so foreboding is takes a form of 'character' itself (the shadows sculpt all the nice rock patterns, very detailed and realistic set construction. SIMPLY PUT : THE BEST SUSPENSE THRILLER HORROR/WITH HORROR ELEMENTS SINCE ALIEN 1 AND SHINING, YES, EVEN SHINING OR OR EXORCIST.Congrats Mr.Marshall, please make Descent 3

Directed by Neil Marshall, the film is not only claustrophobic and incredibly uncomfortable. The performances are all very good, the score is solid, and the set design is great, but above all, it is entirely unsettling. Multiple times I was freaking out and scared out of my mind, which is a great thing for a horror film. The creature design was great and the whole story behind it was very compelling. For a film as contained as this one, the tension was always incredibly high and was very well put together. We are really inserted into the mind of the characters and that ups the terror even more. On every front, The Descent knocks it out of the park and is a really entertaining and fun film to watch. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Descent is of a rare breed these days, a horror film that is actually relentlessly scary. With a simple premise and nice cast to be picked away at one by one, the film is one of the jumpiest out. The setting is terrifically, creating immense claustrophobia early on. And the film is clever, easing the audience into the monsters, showing them little of the fairly simple-costumed creatures. A few points of darkness, a night-vision camera and just enough violence make the Descent an incredibly fun horror. Expand

First, that I am puzzled...I just cant get how people think this is the 'best horror movie ever' , a 'classic', seriously? Well, I never felt it. Classics and good: films like The Omen, Carrie, The Birds, The Exorcist, TCM, and others...this...for God's sake...has to be a joke! I strongly believe his is bad. Incredibly overrated. Many also also say the performances are great. As someone who has worked in performing arts (Mostly in theatre, which is what I truly love), let me tell you that the performances are terrible! At least that is my opinion as someone who has seen a lot of both good and bad acting.

When I rented this movie I expected something different, smart horror, opportune gore. After 25 minutes -that are unnecessarily slow- I started feeling sleepy...30, 40 minutes...well I basically gave up. I don't care if there was gore after, or monsters, or whatever. It is just so frivolous. I felt no empathy for the characters. Not that it was required for this type of film, of course; but there is no real development of their personalities...it is all pretty shallow. The photography was good, and the idea interesting indeed; but that is not enough to make a movie good. Tension? Almost none. If blood is all you want...you will get there, but only after the first 45 min; have a nap before! For those who do not share my point of view, fair enough; but sincerely, I hoped to watch a decent film, and what I found is something flat, less than mediocre that I will never recommend to anyone and I have no intentions to watch it again...perhaps I will finish watching the last half. I shall do that, while I am having a nice glass of a great sauvignon blanc from the Malbourough region (NZ) and a creamy Tasmanian brie cheese... that I guess, will make it more bearable.

This is a very cool and scary setting but the issue come from the fact that it is very dark underground. Most of the action scenes become cluttered and hard to tell what is going on because of the darkness. I am sure that this movie would be great on a big screen or in the theater but for normal folks its an issue. The Definitely one of the more effectively-creep horror movies to come out in the theatres in the past several years IMO. In fact, I think this movie could have been just as scary (or even moreso) without the blind, flesh-eating creatures. The first 45 minutes of the movie before the creatures start showing up will really get you going, especially for any of you clostrophobes out there. To me, the simple situation of finding yourselves in a cave system and not knowing if you will be able to ever find your way out is even scarier than when the blood and gore starts to flow.. But regardless, a very well done movie that is sure to give you the willies. My only complaint is about the so cliche "fooled ya!" type of ending that has been so over done.. Either let the girl escape or don't, but don't do the old "ok, that didn't really happen" thing. Please. But that didn't ruin the movie - I still highly recommend watching it at least once. Expand

There are some plot holes for those that can't suspend disbelief, but that is very minor compared to the overall emotion and fear this movie will create at times. The unique thing about this movie is unlike the horror movies of the 70s and 80s, these girls aren't exactly helpless damsels. That also is what makes it emotional because their heroics, for most, will be in vain. The creatures at first are horrifying, but near the end I found them becoming "video gamed" up. The girls could meet one challenge so now we give you two creatures...then more...it took away from the movies better scenes of girl vs. the unknown in the dark. I guess the best sign that this movie was good, was that I was glad it was over and secretly felt I had to get on the internet just to see the actors were ok because you feel close to the characters they played. Good fun, those that are afraid of caves may hate the panic attack moments in this movie though. Expand

The film is legitimately scary the second time you find the monsters but after that the entire thing falls apart. All of a sudden the cave floor becomes utterly flat with wide open spaces - so the characters can run around in fear a bit more comfortably I suppose. Don't get me started on the monsters explanation as it insults the concept of suspension of disbelief. The moral of it is both offensive (although less so in the British release as it has an additional minute or so but still awful) and upsetting. You are supposed to hate the only heroic figure in the entire film and you are ultimately horrified by the intended figure of sympathy. Also, what happened to clever british scripting? What happened to sharp dialogue and witty give and take? Why does every piece of dialogue in a british film or television (see Hex for a perfect example) show, post- trainspotting, have to sound like my junior high school locker room? Nothing but cursing, crudeness, and lame booze and sex jokes. Guess what? It's not shocking or edgy, this isn't 1950. It's just pathetic. Expand

Yes, I detested the ending, mainly because I thought the rest of the flick was well crafted. Playful and multi-layered take on the conventional 'guy's-road-trip-gone-bad' premise. BTW If you felt the US release had a satisfying ending, don't bother with the UK ending (you'll probably hate it). Expand

I liked the closed, claustrophobic effect (personally, I hate being in that situation, but I liked seeing it on the screen). It added to the tension and horror of the film and helped set things up well. The movie did have it's shocking moments and handled that well. And, in general, I could understand the characters' motivations in their situation and how their attitude changes occurred. On the other side, I didn't get how the tragedy that occurred in the beginning applied to rest of the movie. Why couldn't the movie just have started with the women taking a trip to Appalacia to have an adventure caving? And more needed to be developed in the relationship between the two main characters, Sarah and Juno, to have the events of the latter part of the movie make more of an impact. And yes, the cave monsters are Gollum X 1000, which we've seen before. Expand

"The Descent" is the most horrifying, chilling, enchanting and tastefully gory movie to come about in years. Not only does it prey on our fears from the things in the cave, but it does so by presenting scenes in total darkness. I enjoyed this movie a whole lot. Expand

completely horrifying to me ... you feel the suffocation the cavers experience early on in the movie and then the crazy crawlers start coming out and the rest is basically you holding your breath until the final scene.

In this case, Scotland plays the part of the Appalachian Mountains. Those films were criticisms of America, and early in "The Descent", the woman who controls the car radio, passes on banjo music and makes a dismissive remark about Christianity. Like the Dogma filmmakers, "The Descent" uses a few laughably slight signifiers to normalize its surroundings. If you consider this film was made in the UK and everybody is in a bloody uproar about Tony Blair's involvment with President George W. Bush, isn't it interesting that it's the American character who gets everybody killed. Like the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes", this seemingly escapist romp in the woods has a biting political subtext. Expand

It proves to me that you don't need a tough guy in the film to bring all the action, adventure, and violence of a good horror flick. The movie did all the right things and rarely bored you. The Descent is as daring a movie in its originality as it is an old school thriller that keeps to a good standard for the horror fans. The first truly thrilling and scary movie I have seen. It is definitely worth seeing and is recommended to see on the big screen compared to a rental. Expand
