I believe that if the interface of a medium is too tiresome to work with, then it doesn't matter how good everything else is. In this case the picture is the interface to the viewer because it communicates information. Village Voice I believe that if the interface of a medium is too tiresome to work with, then it doesn't matter how good everything else is. In this case the picture is the interface to the viewer because it communicates information. Village Voice says Ultimatum is some of the most accomplished filmmaking being done. I don't think so. The way Ultimatum was filmed makes my eyes so tired from having to follow the camera: the blurriness, the shakiness, the cropping, the - it just never stops moving. Not even in the quite scenes between Bourne and that blonde chick did the camera ever stop moving. To quote an unregistered user's post in another site, "The director must have glued a video camera to an attention deficits monkey and gave him the control to the focus and the zoom while it was on acid." To me, the film is broken. I don't care what the story is since it takes too much effort to follow it. Effort in this case being my eyes, which feel like their being gouged out halfway through the movie. On top of that. The film doesn't do anything amazing other than the one fight scene with the black guy. Ultimatum is the crummy finish to the first part of the story, Supremacy, which I saw hours before I seeing Ultimatum. Both follow a similar formula and both are anti-climactic. Ultimatum also disappoints because it focuses less on Bourne and more on the investigators saying one-liners that we've all heard before: Give me this camera angle, give that camera angle, etc... Ultimatum is ultimately ruined... even if the story was any good, watching it is much too painful. I could've walked out half-way in and not cared what happened to Bourne, but relief that I didn't have to sit through the rest. Expand

The whole Bourne story actually had some unresolved questions worth making a sequel for. This one is definitely up to par with the other two. A real treat to watch, brilliantly edited. If you're a fan of the action/espionage genre, watch it.

The shaking camera bit was taken to a ludicrous extreme. When half the audience either raves or complains about the camera work, you know the director has screwed up--interesting camera technique is not why we go to see films! A little bit of shaking in the fast-paced scenes could have accomplished the desired effect, but no, the director has to smash us over the head with it. He seems amateurish, as if he discovered a new trick and really had to go overboard with it, forgetting the basics of good filmmaking and storytelling in the process. Maybe the success of his earlier films has gone to his head? Expand

I loved the first two - while the action was good in this one - I thought the story went a little astray. It was almost a continuation of the second movie - like an alternate ending (or a directors cut) to the second movie.

And this is just what is capable of keeping you going on with Matt Damon's tense. There're not many action sequences in the whole film in fact, or what you call fight sequences. Pretty a lot are foot chases or Bourne's tricks to help Ross (a role in the film) run away from CIA agents. However, these non-action sequences are still able to make the viewers fell excited. Near the end of the film there's a car chase, which ends in a similar way that the one in Supremacy did. It's okay but it's not as good. The foot chase on the rooftop in Moroco and the hand-to-hand martial combat between Bourne and Desh afterwards is no doubt the highlight of the entire movie. Like its predecessor, Bourne's intelligence is still the main worth-watching point, which is also the major factor that makes the story brilliant. The major flaw is the camera work, which shakes all the time. It made the car chase hard to see (it's hard to tell how many cars were involved there and which car bumped into which). But the hand-to-hand combats are still okay enough with the shaky camera, unlike that one in the apartment in Supremacy, where camera shakes too heavily. Expand

The It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. I can't remember the majority of scenes from the movie off-hand, but, in general, there were a few really interesting action scenes interspersed with a mediocre plot and ending. The movie really required one to remember a lot from the other Bourne movies (which I only saw once each, and, for both, a while ago), which caused me to vaguely follow some of the plot: OK, such and such was shot in India and fell off the bridge, bla bla bla. Paul Greengrass kicked butt as a director in United 93, but most don't have the stomach for the subject matter in that film. Oddly enough, most of America would rather watch a 6/10 movie like BU than a real piece of art like United 93. That is what is driving movies in the direction they have been going for a while now. People can't recognize art anymore or they're too afraid or not deep enough to pursue it. Expand

All I can say about that is...a scene about a conversation in an office doesn't need the "shaky cam" for it to be more believable. Poor choice by the director...to use that method throughout the whole film.
AND NOW FOR THE MAIN POINT!!!
Even though I came away from this film unsatisfied...I decided that I would be way less motion sick if I read the book...although I sometimes find myself waving the pages back and forth and shaking my head side to side...just for effect of course...HOWEVER did you know that the book and the film have absolutely no relevence. The title is the same but believe me (even though I'm only on chapter 7) the book is terrific. It deals with Bourne who is leading a normal life with a family etc...until he finds himself being hunted down by his nemisis CARLOS THE JACKAL. This story, like others about Bourne have nothing to do with the films but Ludlum is a great writer...I was disappointed that it has nothing to do with the movie because I like to compare stories told through both mediums...but as I get deeper into the novel it helps me forget that dizzy night I wasted $12.

The Bourne Ultimatum is the best movie out this year. It is a spectacular, heart-pounding journey that shows you don't need to rack up the death toll to deliver a terrific action movie. This proves that, and proves it well. Matt Damon The Bourne Ultimatum is the best movie out this year. It is a spectacular, heart-pounding journey that shows you don't need to rack up the death toll to deliver a terrific action movie. This proves that, and proves it well. Matt Damon is back as Jason Bourne, the man who can't remember what he is. But this time around, he is starting to remember, and flashes are coming back to him. His goal in the movie is very simple: go back to the beginning. And this is just what he does as he makes his way to New York, where the CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen is determined to take him down and take him out (played by the talented David Strathairn). Along with Mr. Vosen, is the returning Pamela Landy (Joan Allen), who doesn't believe in Noah's own plans, and, almost like Bourne, wants to get to the bottom of the entire case herself. There are some terrific action scenes in this film. The scene in the terminal with the British writer is very suspenseful, keeping you on edge as Bourne weaves he and his partner in and out and around security. There is a fight in an apartment that is reminiscent of the one in the house in "Bourne Supremacy," but this one is two times better and five times as brutal. The plot doesn't have as many twists and turns as the previous two in the trilogy, but this one grabs your attention and throttles you through a fast-paced, adrenaline-stimulated 2 hours. The music is one other thing to note, as it does a great job of keeping you awake, and note that the end credits song is good enough to worth staying around for (sung by Moby). It is hard to find action movies this smart, and yet this entertaining at the same time. The Bourne Ultimatum is first-class, as quite possibly one of the best trilogies ever comes to a close. Expand

Ultimatum still has a lot of the herky-jerky blurred camera work that Supremacy had, but it's cut back a lot and it didn't give me a headache this time. I still liked the camera work on the first one much better. If it hadn't been for the hand-held shaky camera work, I would have given this one a 10. Expand

Not a wasted scene, tight action and script. No sentimentality in this action thriller. Best of the Bourne trilogy, they must end the series here since Bourne does not want to kill anymore.

Great except for one thing. Stop so much camera jiggling! I got dizzy trying to watch the fight and chase scenes. I felt jipped out of seeing the details due to this jumping camera "trendy technique". Please go back to smooth camera shots!!!

This might have been the best movie of the year if the camera had stopped long enough to actually see the action. Constant/non-stop back & forth motion. I left with a headache. This might be considered "artistic", but, I'd rather watch a movie.

I found it completely believable, from the silent fights to the use of real news agencies. Even though looking back some of it seems unbelievable the direction and visual style made it work. That and the way that some of the actions of the CIA seemed grimly close to reality (shooting innocent civilians, press censorship etc) I also felt that the shaky cam added to the action and helped emphasize the beauty of the more steady sequences. The bumpy camera work continued even during what should have been still close-ups. The sheer white burnout area of so many of the camera shots was like having a flashlight shine in my eyes every couple of milliseconds. The focus was horrible - and all over the place. Yes, I enjoy Jason Bourne, and maybe this film would be more effective on TV - but it was a very trying experience at the movies. Do the stars of this picture look so bad that we should not be able to focus on them? I left the movie having a better idea of what the characters Landy and Daniels looked like than Bourne or the Stiles character. Hopefully this style of camera-work it will be out of style soon. So - the emperor has no clothes - this style of filming is flashy and unrelenting and makes for a painful viewing experience. Enjoy the story with your eyes closed. Expand

Third Bourne movie delivers a knock out blow. Fast, griping and taunt thriller/action film gives the audience possibly the best ride of the summer.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Matt Damon's stoic third turn as Jason Bourne but the film series is starting to slip into Jason Bourne becoming the American version of James Bond with political correctness thrown in. Realism has been the part that has distinguished the Bourne series from the James Bond films and every other action film. But with each movie Jason Bourne becomes more of a machine and less a human being. He's basically becoming James Bond or Jason Vorhees, an indestructible force. The Bourne Ultimatum moves quickly and grips the viewer into the story but slowly devolves as it continues. Bourne 3 is directly in line with Bourne 2 and partially Bourne 1 stories. Fanboys of the original two films can see how previous scenes from the first 2 films are revisited in this film. Which was incredibly cool. Great twist on the ending of Bourne 2 or seperate scene with the same knowledge of that scene but super cool either way. I have to rewatch it to be certain of which way it went.
Julia Stiles is great in this film as is Damon and Joan Allen and the head CIA honcho. As the filme is enhanced from the knowledge of the viewer of the previous 2 films it is also what the heck that wasn't hinted at in the previous 2 films dumb downed by screenplay. The not so subtle hint that Julia Stiles had a previous relationship with Bourne before got amnesia is not any where hinted at in the first 2 movies. She is actually prone killing him in 2 and in the subway tunnel scene when Bourne has a gun to her head would have probably mentioned it to save her life in 2. But still a great scene with her coloring her hair.
In my not expert opinion Paul Greengrass gets way to much credit for directing Bourne 2 and 3. Yes, he did a good job with 2 and 3 and Yes, i thought United 93 was the best picture of 2006. But Doug Liman was the creator of the this film version. In Bourne Identity he started the taunt exciting pacing and realistic action but still made Bourne human. Greengrass has turned Bourne into only a human weapon, a machine. Bourne Identity is still by far the best film in the series.
Two this series is starting to get very political. Bourne books are not political at all, actually treadstone is not an evil organization nor is the CIA. In Bourne ID, Jason Bourne is trying to find out who he is. Not Political. But by Bourne 3, Jason Bourne is not so subtly a political metaphor by a foreign director who thinks he understands America. Bourne symbolizes american power, a weapon that can be used to kill. The CIA bosses are the power brokers who decide who die. The sooldier, Bourne, doesn't even know why he was ordered to kill. Bourne is America waking up from his slumber(American public and soldiers) and saying he doesn't want to kill any more. It's not the soldiers who are evil but the men behind the scenes making the decision that American don't even know about that our evil. America needs to wake up to what it is doing. Cooper, Strahan and Cox all american Cia bosses are the villians in the series. It's the cia's fault and american politics who are causing the problems in the world. Nothing about the people who trying to kill americans. I was waiting for someone to hint that the cia was behind 911. Personally i think the cia should be trying to take out people who are trying to kill americans before they try again. I hope we have jason bourne working for the cia.
The Bourne Ultimatum plays into the Americans guilt with interfering into foreing affairs of other countries and Greengrass' fears of the power of American military weapons and their potential use. James Bond and the english who colonized half the world have no guilt about their foreign affairs so James Bond kills without conscious knowing he's doing his countries work. Jason Bourne lost his mind killing fo rhis country and regrets everything he's done symbolizing americans guilt over interfering in Iraq and rest of the world. It's anti-american values to interferr in foreign countries. And Greengrass' plays into that along with his personal fear of American power.

Back to the movie, if the whole movie is supposed to be the final chapter in a triology of who Bourne is why do we get so little incite into who his character was before ....all we get is a weak, unsatisfying conclusion. I hope we haven't seen the last of Jason Bounre and i hope the real Jason Bourne are still on the CIA and America's side.

A contrast between the two movies helps explain something about the "Bourne Ultimatum": the later one is a very enjoyable roller coaster ride about the amnesiac scarecrow in search of his heart, who happens to be a perfectly conflicted killing machine. The earlier movie is a 70s tour de force about the tin man, the lion, the scarecrow and Dorothy all rolled into one disoriented, reluctant killer, and Redford's quest reflects four times the character depth because of it. as a total package I would give Condor the edge, but then again I don't expect a less thoughtful movie to reveal the workings of the wizard--perhaps that is a thrill for a previous or a future decade, and for their more thoughtful audiences.
