Acting wasn't good. Lame villain. Decent soundtrack. Awful story. Needs at least 90 minutes edited out of it. Basically your typical DC Comic movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just awful. First to address everyone else’s concerns, yes, the lighting is too dark, the acting is cringeworthy, and the plot would need the world’s greatest detective to even find.

Now, to the main Bat himself. Pattinson is the dullest portrayal I’ve seen yet. He’s a subpar fighter, wearing what must be diamond armor with the flexibility of silk. This man is struck with thousands of bullets, and shows no signs of pain or wavering until the plot calls for it in the climax. This miracle armor is never explained.
Also, instead of the character’s usual tendency to investigate a crime scene solo, Robert ‘Bat’tinson insists on awkwardly shuffling around the room with every other cop, like he’s just some cosplayer Gordon brought in for a ride along. And he is the least intimidating Batman to date, and yes, that’s including TV’s Adam West. In the Dark Knight, we got the interrogation scene where Bale beat Joker to within an inch of his life. Chills. But in this movie? Batman talks to Riddler through a phone…behind glass…and he throws a tantrum asking “What have you doooone?!” over…and over…and over. Lame.
Well, at least Bruce Wayne is portrayed well in this mov-haha! No. Bruce is a moody brat and a recluse that looks like he’d be more at home at a beach bonfire party with a guitar, singing about his ‘deep emotional soul pain!’ Riddler was an embarrassment. He looked like an annoying dweeb. His costume was a gimp suit. I actually forgot about him halfway through the movie because he wasn’t adding anything to the plot. He did get one thing right though: Batman is dumber than he thought. Seriously, why would he think the “rat with wings” would be Penguin? They don’t have wings, so much as they have flippers.

Catwoman was unnecessary. Her outfit was uninspired, and her motivations were confusing, which brings me to:

Annika was…well, actually I have no idea who she was. In the car, Selina calls her “babe”, so my first thought was ‘lover’? But then maybe just a roommate too, I dunno. But Annika is kidnapped by Falcone for…reasons. And her strangled scream is sent as a voicemail to Selina, who in turn goes after Falcone, her (plot twist) father, and tries to shoot him, claiming, “This is for my Mother!” Wait so, is Annika her roommate, friend, lover, sister, mother, or whatever?! I don’t even care, their relation is never clearly established.

And some other irks here and there. I don’t think we even got a clear shot of the batmobile. It was too dark, but it looked uninspired, like something you’d see at a rally track. Batman assaults Gordon and escapes the entire GCPD in a gunfight, then a few scenes later turns in Falcone to the police in person, as if he’s a duly deputized citizen of the law. What the actual hell. Batman only caught Riddler because he let himself be caught.
HOW did the mayor not only survive a sniper shot, but appear in enough health to give a ‘hope speech’ in what would appear to be 1 or 2 in-world hours later?! HOW!?! This movie is a disappointing flop. There are thousands of better things to watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Robert Patterson made an alright batman but completely sucked at being Bruce Wayne. When he was Bruce Wayne it was like watching the twilight movies. I've never seen Bruce act like that all suspicious and looking like a dam criminal. Like wtf happened on this Batman it was horrible. Also like little to no action really at all. Catwoman was garbage. The penguin looked like a human almost like 2 face. And last but not least the riddler looked like the guy from my bloody valentine. Not only did they completely butcher the film but but they butchered the characters as well. I don't understand why this movie has such good ratings. It was the most boring batman I've ever seen. They should just stop making these. This is the 6th different batman actor and its getting worse. If you can't keep the same batman then just give up already. Obviously everyone hates playing batman since no one ever wants to keep playing him. Expand

The prologue is alienating because of the pair of chosen tracks: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Nirvana's "Something in the Way". The photograph looks like that of "Blade Runner" but more livid and desaturated: here are not many sudden flashes, bright razorcuts of neon or lasers that cleave the darkness. The shade prevails for about 3 hours uninterrupted. At least in the incipit the pouring rain is missing, then instead it is added as well. The story is a succession of crime scenes in which a taciturn, weirdly dressed dude with a mask and cloak investigates alongside cops and detectives. If acting is optional, Pattinson could have been replaced by Robert Smith (which means the movie is not grunge or emo, but gothic). The third act loots the Fincher of '95, '99, 2007 and the McTeigue of 2005. Matt Reeves: horrible example of the new authoriality.

He has beautifully shown the ray of hope lying inside the dark, broody and vengeful character of the masked crusader. It has awesome cinematography, some scenes are very dark yet way of capturing the emotion is just fabulous. Some of the action sequences combined with brilliance of cinematography make those pieces of real art and perfection. The movie unveils the layered character of the batman. Without going into setting up the story of origin of batman(Nolan's trilogy did that) it successfully takes us into the psyche of our character, how he would have fought the 'fear' he once witnessed.

The villain, the riddler also deserves due respect as he literally tears apart the city and the way in which it is portrayed has great relevance to the real world of ours as we all know the "the so called savers are real looters in real life". It shows how the the people endowed with duty can become greedy to the core and can do anything for their selfish needs. The best and widely acclaimed success of the administration / government can actually be a big lie. I personally liked Paul Dano's work , as he has shown some real piece of acting. Its mind boggling to see such a cute face can be such a sinful, merciless, hell of a maniac killer. At the same time he is also successful as a cult.

The cat woman although small appearance but is well portrayed.

In all, the movie is by far the best from DCEU for me. I watch both Marvel and DC, But i can say that this movie is greater than all three spider-man (the current Tom Holland's)if not than avengers endgame. Actually it is bigger than many of individualistic marvel movies. And also bigger than Justice League/ Batman vs Superman etc in terms of strength of character and revealing the psyche of the character. I'm vengeance, I'm the night and I'm Batman.
The movie has shown that Batman is more than just vengeance.
Love it , Robert Pattinson has done justice to the young, novice stage of The Batman.

But just remember that Batman is a fictional character, and while he is relatable to most of the audience do not add realistic details that ruin important factors about the character. The scenes in this film are gritty, Dark and shot cinematically well. Robert Pattison truly earns his role as The Batman, while Zoe Kravitz needs some work as Catwoman (please give her a proper Mask next time), and the chemistry between The Cat and The Bat falls flat. As for the other actors, they are believable and help settle the plot in an amazing manner. The Bat-suit, the Batmobile The Batcycle, the Batclaw and the Batarang are great and are used effectively. The pacing is good, but the amount of time used in this film is long, chop it down to 10-15 minutes, and rework some stretched-out scenes. Batman's Fighting style is tanky which is not bad just let him show off some more agile moves. The music, the atmosphere and the scenery of this film are near perfection this is truly what Gotham looks like and it is introduced incredibly well (Batman's Opening Scene *Chefs Kiss). Is this a masterpiece compared to Nolan's movies...No, this will not appeal to a normal Marvel/Action Moviegoer but damn this is a Great Batman Film, it's a good Thriller and feels like a play with theatrical epic events with a good moral conclusion which fits well with the character. I would recommend seeing The Batman as soon as possible. Expand

Compared to other hero movies, the seriousness and atmosphere of the movie was very good. I was very happy that there are no unnecessary dialogues and non-funny jokes in hero movies that are increasingly made for children today. there is a batman with traumas, you understand that he did it for a purpose, not as a hobby, I like it very much in terms of character processing and character development. It has a successful and binding scenario, the plot is disconnected and not boring. This is not only an action movie, but also a drama and detective. Well-crafted, beautifully realistic action scenes and the fact that Batman sometimes stumbles instead of turning everyone in front of him into a punching bag has added a depth to the action scenes, the atmosphere of the city is very good and the effects are also very good and we see a Batman who complies with the laws of physics. My heat may not be important for everyone, after all, it's a hero movie, but in my opinion, every movie should have a little realism, it was very good in costume and other tools, so if I need to cut it short, we have a great Batman movie, remember these are my opinions on the movie, only batman will beat the baddies, save the city mode The viewers may not enjoy it that much, but this movie was just for me and I think the general audience will like it, in short, Great Movie Robert Pattinson's acting and adaptation to the role was also great. This is the closest rendition of a graphic novel on screen I have ever seen, apart from all its peers. The cinematography is just spectacular, each scene is worthy of pausing and framing, and is loaded with allegory. The fight scenes remind me of the taught, lightning-speed moves of the excellent Arkham series of games. I read recently this is one of the most rewatched movies in history, and now that makes sense. Pattison plays the role well, a man who is torn by this past and trying to redefine himself in the present. He displays remarkable intelligence and resources becoming a billionaire detective, yet shows character flaws and weaknesses becoming an everyman. His deliberate carefulness in each scene is appropriate, but this vanishes into decisive action for the well-being of others in times of crisis. This Batman upholds the right to life and dominance of law more so than previous iterations. The movie relies less on gadgets and vehicles, and more on wits and will. Kravitz plays an excellent Catwoman, born of pain, and bred to intelligent survival. Dano is a formulaic Riddler, but the unrecognizable Farrell is a remarkable penguin, stealing every scene. The entire cast performs well overall. I think we are now justified in seeing another remarkable Batman trilogy with a very unique aesthetic and arc. It is a pity other hero franchises cannot reach these levels. Perhaps Batman’s lack of powers and adherence to justice makes him the most relatable protagonist of all. Expand

The Batman

The Batman is a near three hours of delicious and dark crime noir. It is bleak and thrilling. Dealing with a Batman that's new to the mask and the vigilante life, it strays from the exploration that former iterations have delivered.

The Batman knows what it is and the direction by Matt Reeves straitly sticks to it. The Batman delivers stunning cinematography and styling, with a delicious score by Michael Giacchino.

The themes (of class, wealth, inequality and PTSD) that The Batman delves into are handled carefully.

A good story, direction, cinematography and action choreography would be nothing if the cast isn't brilliant, and the cast of The Batman is nothing short of brilliance. The broody and contemplative Batman is balanced with a flirty and sensual Catwoman, and the villain in the Riddler is malign, twisted and sinister.

The Batman is a riveting start at Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's iteration of the titular character, and should leave audiences wanting more from this Batman.

9/10.

The movie is long and predictable and uses the same fundamental plot that is present in all of Nolan's Batman movies i.e some plot to blow up or destroy the city or something along those lines. Its honestly terrible. There's like one or two memorable scenes in the whole movie. The rest is things you've seen countless times. Expand

It certainly is the top 3 Batman movies of all time . There shouldn't even be debate but the cinematography is breathtaking , each and every frame is piece of art , it's a never ending visual treat and to be honest it really does stand apart from other marvel movies which look so dull . The soundtrack ( Michael Giacchino deserves a Oscar ) it is palpitating and hair raising , it really makes you step into the moment . The performances are exceptional by each and everyone. Robert is the "Batman" and he really **** nails it , his eyes draw connects with you at each and every level , Paul Dano does brilliantly too although some of the scenes I feel like could be written a bit more well my Matt Reeves , The supporting casts Gordon , Penguin and Catwoman every one has a well written plot (Penguin steals the show along with Batman) . This Gotham is dark and gritty and it's one of the most comic accurate Gotham we have ever witnessed and this young Bruce Wayne fits perfectly in this world
This really is one of the best Movie of this 2022 and superhero genre

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the movie is one of the best movies of this year. Even if some consider the film's story to be slow, Batman fits such a serious and heavy pace. The only downside is that the last 1 hour of the movie is very up in the air. About 35-40 minutes could be taken from the film. Expand

This is, understandably, an urban, gritty, often tense and claustrophobic, dark and somewhat unsettling watch, continuing the tone and themes of previous Batman films (think the Dark Knight films).

While it is bleak, the cast give good performances (particularly Robert Pattinson in the titular role and Andy Serkis as his butler, Alfred) and I thought the plot certainly intriguing enough to keep me watching through the close to 3 hour runtime, which certainly isn't bad. I imagine fans of the previous Batman films will likely really enjoy this, so yes, I'd recommend it, though it's fair to say that if softly spoken whispery type talk isn't your thing, then you may not enjoy this. There are some pretty thrilling car chases though!.

Reeves bring the superhero genre in the pantheon of high class movies like Dark Knight and Joker.

This is my favorite depiction of Gotham thus far and I think Pattinson is my favorite live action version of Batman from a portrayal/performance point of view. Some of the dialogue could be better, it wasn't awful, but it was just generic at times. The pacing sort of dips in the middle of the film and some key story beats could've been better explored, but the positives outweigh the negatives in my opinion. Overall, I think this was a great Batman film and I can't wait for more of this version in the future. P.S. Please introduce some fantastical elements and a R rating to really set it apart from past live iterations. There's so much potential. Expand

I love the character of Batman but this movie was all over the place, dragged across 3 hours of boredom.
First, its Batman himself. I understand that he is supposed to be powerful and all in certain ways but, through the whole movie, it felt like he was someone using a cheat command console on a game and types in "god".
Numerous times, he gets absolutely destroyed and not even a scratch or damage to the armor or a scar on part of the face that is not covered...nothing
First he is running away from cops, uses his wingsuit to escape and falls down after hitting a bridge or something AND slams onto the ground. A small grunt was the only thing that happened.
After that, he gets blasted by a bomb that blew up right in front of his face that made him fly across the church hall...Next scene, he`s completely fine, not a problem...
Finally, as the movie was slowly coming to a closure, he eats a bunch of automatic riffle bullets, while casually walking towards the two thugs shooting him and, of course, without twitching, takes them down... I mean, what the fck...
His fighting is clumsy and for someone who is in the role of Batman for two years should have made him more experienced.
There were NEVER any consequences to his actions. Riddler all of the sudden figuring out that Bruce is Batman was not even it...
Speaking of Bruce...In this movie, he is depicted as someone who does not care about his life, not even trying to be Bruce Wayne, as depicted in the comics and other movies...
In Batman Begins, Alfred tells Bruce that he has to do things he is not comfortable with like, spending money on cars and buying hotels, being a rich douche...Which he does, knowing that THAT separates him from his alter ego, while also protecting the people close to him.
In this movie, there is none, NONE !
Him realizing at the end, I must be more that vengeance does not overwrite all the bad **** throughout the movie.
The chemistry between him and Catwoman was pretty much forced and felt rushed.
They barely have any real interactions and all of the sudden she kisses him...If Reeves left that to happen later in his vision of Batman`s life, it would have been done way smoother and more understandable.
Also, when it comes to Selina, I have to mention *that* line... She says "White privileged a**holes"... That was not needed. Riddler felt like the only part of the movie that I liked, UNTIL Reeves ruined him.
From the very beginning, his plan was to unravel the corrupt city officials and violently expose them. Which was from a villain stand point a good start. He felt creepy, brutal and he was showing what he was doing to everyone and people of Gotham actually started cheering for him (Major funeral scene, as Bruce was arriving)
And by the end of the movie, once he`s caught, Batman reveals his ultimate plan...which was to... kill innocents by flooding the entre city ? What ?
Reeves built a character that already had a premise and was well written, only to retcon his decisions at the end and make him a serial murderer of innocent people....
I also liked Colin`s Penguin adaptation, his acting and looks fully made a fresh, great take on a classic comic villain. He was always Batman`s punching bag and at least that has not changed...
The Batmobile was also awesome, as a car guy, I was blown away.
The soundtrack was ok, the bat and cat themes were good.
Overall, even those good things do not make up for such a bad movie for me.

I thought about not including the Joker in this review but I cannot not mention him.
Batman movies nowadays suffer from Joker fatigue. Batman has so so many comic book villains that could be used in Reeves' universe, and ground them instead of making all fantasy like.
Mad Hatter, Calendar Man, Victor Zsasz, Death Stroke (Even tho he doesn't fit in within the theme of the first movie) heck, even Killer Croc where he could be a dude who's a cannibal... ANYTHING of that but the Joker...
This version clearly tries too hard to be like Ledger, just by listening to him. He's voice is very similar to him, it's very see-through.

Starting from the villain, the way he is temperamentally made is pitiful and the costume is hideous, he looks like a man in a garbage bag. The characterization of Batman then is practically non-existent and reduced to a figure that is almost always silent and lacks any kind of charisma. But the film is still watchable as it contains some good action scenes and good moments, plus an honorable mention must be made to the character of Selina who is the only one characterized by a minimum. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This contains VERY mild spoilers at the end that will be split and labeled appropriately.

Very high quality, as even though I wonder if the movie was a bit long and I don't think the casting was on point, I think everything else was top notch. The ending to this film does something that I wish more Batman adaptations did outside of animation: make him a hero that does more than punch the bad guy. Seeing an even more realistic Batman than even the Nolan version play against a very well balanced villain in terms of insanity and competence was a return to form.

This is the spoiler-y part, so if you don't want a minor spoiler you can stop reading.

Can we bring up the fact that the Penguin kills at least a dozen random drivers in the chase scene and Batman doesn't hold him accountable? I get that he's distracted but Gordon at least shouldn't just let him go afterward.

And this Gotham could easily be the nameless city where Se7en took place, including the incessant precipitation. The talent that Matt Reeves assembled for this one is beautifully apparent, from the set design to the cinematography (so many shots deserved to be paused and marveled at), casting to scripting (the script’s frequent use of silence to convey meaning is masterful), and his direction is spot on. Easily one of the best Batmans out there, but the suffocating dreariness of it leaves me wondering how often I’ll want to watch it again. And I have to ask - are we SURE that was Colin Farrell? That said my main issue with this is the fact that the Riddler is basically a puzzle gimp. The mask is pretty tragic and the character is over the top yet boring at the same time. Part of Riddler’s most iconic look is undoubtedly the green suit. It’s refined and comes as an expectation of the character. The Riddler comes across with a lot less eccentricity when compared to other Riddlers for example the Arkham Games or Ed Nygma in Gotham. Both had that eccentric flair that drove the portrayal.

Another thing that bothers me is Bruce and Batman, seemingly lacking dialogue and more of a side character in his own story. With little suspense and predictable outcomes the movie isn’t really worth 3 hours of anyone’s time.

My final point is the car… a billionaire opts to drive what looks like a modified 70s sports car with an afterburner strapped to the back… of all things. With a positive note being the chase scene is fairly entertaining for all of a few minutes. With one or two twists, don’t really give it your time.

The bleak tone from his Planet of the Apes films are ever so present in this movie and that is never a bad thing. The Batman is very character heavy and there are surprisingly only a few massive set pieces which has grand action sequences although when they come, oh yes, they deliver. Robert Pattinson is wonderful as Batman although he doesn't show much emotion when he is Bruce Wayne either so it is a little hard to get into his character. However after the first half hour, I got used to it. The cinematography by Greig Fraser is gorgeous. The film mostly takes place at night and that neo noir feel is perfect for this Batman adaptation. The film's middle third sags a tad too much with Cat Woman's backstory but when it is detective Batman solving crimes with Jim Gordon, played wonderfully by Jeffrey Wright, it is riveting stuff. Andy Serkis plays a very solid Alfred, who is kind, caring, yet strong but he is barely in the film. Paul Dano is very terrifying as the Riddler, who doesn't show his face until later on in the film but when he does, he does a suitably crazy Riddler who is a solid Batman nemesis. Michael Giacchino's score is wonderfully memorable and plays a big part in the thrilling action sequences as well as the small characters moments. Although it might not be as accessible as Nolan's best Dark Knight movies, this is also a really exciting piece of work. Expand

This Movie is grotesquely gorgeous, Gotham is dirt, full of corruption, just like the comics.
Pattison is incredible, but i really belive that he needs to gain some weight for the role (i know that he's a younger version for the bats, but he's very skinny to the role, in my opinion.)
But, the movie is incredibly, if you like the comics, please go watch this.

the story, the cinematography, the acting, are on point! This is by far one of the great batman movies in all of its franchise. I really liked the symbolisms in the movie and how the story unfolds from the beginning until the end. Can’t waitthe story, the cinematography, the acting, are on point! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The new Batman film is a good step forward after the atrocious Affleck/DCEU version of the character that preceded it. The movie has many positive elements including a refreshing take of the Dark Knight, expertly portrayed by the underrated Pattinson, a more realistic and gritty setting and great cinematography. Unfortunately, the film is not without it's flaws. It borrows heavily from better films like Seven and Zodiac, but Reeves is no Fincher. The screenplay is also no match for the two aforementioned pictures. Particularly the ending contradicts the established motives of the Riddler and offers a very optimistic outcome when the films it studied offered a far more bleak finale. The movie at times feels like a sequel to a Year One movie, which doesn't work here. Concluding my "rant" about the screenplay i have to say that the romance between the Bat and the Cat was rushed. Another aspect of the film that bugged me was the overuse of music in scenes where it was unnecessary. Overall "The Batman" is a decent film with a cool world, good character work for it's main lead, good performances, specifically Pattinson and Farrell and competently shot. However, it is dragged down by a very mediocre screenplay and overuse of music. Expand

Yeah, I'm well aware that this will never be considered the best live action Batman film to the mass audience, BUT IT IS TO ME. First of all, as a long time fan of the character since I was in my diapers, I really appreciated the influences from Year One, The Long Halloween, EGO, Earth One, Zero Year, Dark Victory, and many more other comics. There's also a lot of love for Adam West's Batman, the Arkham Games, and the telltale series in this. The film itself has A lot of Taxi Driver, Se7en, Chinatown, and Zodiac in there which are one of my all time favorites so that definitely factors in for my love of this movie. The Cinematography, Score, Story, Characters, Set designs, lighting/color palettes, performances, and atmosphere are all on point to me. The highlights to me were Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne who nails the darkness and humanity of the character, The score by Michael Giachinno absolutely captures the noir/heroic side of this universe reminding me at times of the animated series, and the world of Gotham city which feels absolutely hopeless making the history feel rich. I wish some story beats were explored more and some resolutions weren't solved by exposition and conveniences. Other than that, I absolutely loved this film and I cannot wait for what Matt Reeves and the team does next with The Batman sequels/Spin-offs. Expand
