The Babadook has a few pacing issues but by forgoing the clichéd jump scares in favour of psychological horror it is more interesting than many recent Hollywood efforts in the genre.

The painfully slow build-up doesn't pay off by the end of the film. I never really felt interested or scared when watching this film. Especially with the annoying over-reliance on jump scares.

Anchored by a brilliant performance by Essie Davis as a single mother attempting to raise a problem child without becoming a monster herself, The Babadook is possibly the best horror film to come out since Guillermo Del Toro’s Pans Labyrinth. And yet, to say this is the best modern horror film in years feels odd, primarily because The Babadook has very little in common with the recent trends of jump scare found footage films (Paranormal Activity) or torture porn films (Saw). No doubt, fans of these more recent horror movements will be disappointed. Jenifer Kent’s film is a better fit in the cannon of 70’s classics that capitalize on the primal fears of parenthood (Rosemary’s Baby, Don’t Look Now, The Brood). It actually has an idea of what is truly frightening, slowly building menace with very few jump scares, strange noises, and unusual things seen out of the corner of our eye. But the last act is fatally flawed, giving in to clichés such as people being flung around a house by an invisible monster and loud screechy music slathered on top of annoying yelling. This greatly diminishes what was for most of its running time a surprisingly creepy movie. The ending also makes very little sense no matter how you look at it. Still, it's definitely worth a look if you're searching for a few chills. "ba ba dook dook dook!"… Expand

First, this is an excellent film. BUT, possibly it was over-hyped. Maybe I expected something different. But, I found some boredom creeping in around the half-way point. Not enough praise can be given to the acting talents of the two leads. The young boy, especially, turned in the best child performance I have ever seen in a horror movie. He was actually frightening himself, even in his quiet moments. Most impressive. It will be interesting to see if he moves forward to a full acting career.… Expand

The entire movie is pretty much like this:
"MOM!, MOM!, MOM!, MOM! BABADOOK-DOOK-DOOK!...MOM WTF?..SCREAMS..MOM I WILL SAVE YOU!... ENDING."
Not scary, ears breaking, poor acting, waste of time. I dont really understand this big fan baseThe entire movie is pretty much like this:

The Babadook is definitely one of the best horror movies in the past 10 years. It is leagues above all the horror movies released in the past 5 years. The script is genius and casting is top notch. I can bet GOOD MONEY! that the negative reviews come from people who just don't understand Horror films. They're the same people who like movies like Ouija and Annabelle. Is it the scariest movie i have ever seen? No, not exactly. But it is scary psychologically, it's a film that gives you a very eerie feeling after you're done watching. I have to give them tons of credit for not having even ONE jump scare! Not one! The film builds up and get scarier and scarier, so the first act or so might feel a bit underwhelming. The acting is fantastic! The little boy was so good as well as the actress playing the mom. Hollywood take Note, that is how you make a proper horror movie!!!! I will say that i am sick! of Horror movies being about Possessions, the whole (my son/daughter is possessed or the my dad/mom is possessed! I am honestly tired of it! COME UP WITH SOMETHING BETTER! The Babadook isn't a possession film per se, but it's more of Monster movie, that leans towards possessions. The end of the movie was ODD, that's all I'll say. Not a perfect movie but compared to the Hoards of Horror movies America releases yearly THIS IS ABOVE all of that crap. Expect Hollywood to do a "Remake" LOL. I'm giving the Babadook a 9/10.… Expand

I managed to get a promo on this movie and I saw it as a late night personal special on Halloween. All day long I had watched my favorite horror flicks, but I longed to watch something new and good. I tried a few titles, but they all fell way too short. I had begun to think that Hallowen of 2014 would forever be scared by the lack of a quality horror movie! Enter "The Babadook"!
Right off the bat - this movie is very, very good. I hadn't heard of the director, nor any of the actors, in fact I still don't know their names and I won't go to IMBD to check and to sound professional about this review, because it doesn't matter - the movie is that solid.
It tells a tale that at first sounds as one we've heard a thousand times, but as the plot gets more entwined a very subtle, yet strong sense of symbolism is introduced, that relies on the viewer's judgement to assess what is actually going on in the movie.
All the actors do a great job, the supernatural challenge presented in the film is indeed creepy and frightening, and the overall plot is very strong.
I am taking away one point because I feel the ending makes a statement that almost becomes a inner conflict. But it's not at all a big deal.
This is the strongest horror movie I've seen in a long time - not just in 2014. It's a movie I recommend to all horror fans and movie fanatics - you are sure to enjoy this movie.… Expand

It's also a fine piece of craft; low budget to be sure but it looked slick and stylish and I didn't question the effects.

Hard to say too much about the plot of course without giving things away, but what makes this movie interesting is it really focuses on a mother-child relationship, and the social dynamics surrounding them. On that level it feels grounded, and that makes the film compelling.… Expand

Looking through some of my reviews for more recent horror films, I seem to react with genuine surprise whenever I come across one that I've actually enjoyed. And I think that's mainly due to the fact that almost all modern horror films areLooking through some of my reviews for more recent horror films, I seem to react with genuine surprise whenever I come across one that I've actually enjoyed. And I think that's mainly due to the fact that almost all modern horror films are the same. They don't pay much thought to character development, story or drama, and are just concerned with forcing bigger screams from its audience and making them throw their popcorn higher and higher into the air. If people leave a cinema laughing about a horror film they just saw, it has failed to deliver. If they are quiet and exhausted, then it really has frightened its audience.

The Babadook, first and foremost, is a terrifying experience. Not entirely because of its supernatural elements and the villainous entity, but because of the drama and tension surrounding the unstable family unit that Amelia and Samuel inhabit. Though a single parent raising an unmanageable child may be a well trodden premise, particularly in a horror story, it is compounded by an expertly written and heartfelt script, authentic performances - Essie Davis is outstanding - and a horrifying exploration of a parent's descent into madness, the kind not executed this well in horror films since The Shining.

When the supernatural elements do emerge, the third act begins to falter slightly, and the melodrama of the dialogue threatens to encroach soap opera territory. But what chilled me to the bone was watching the mother - influenced by this evil being - chasing her son around their dilapidated house, hurting him and threatening him, and realising that this is how some children live their lives, without influence of the Babadook. I'm sure this was director/writer Jennifer Kent's intention, and she's absolutely hit the nail on the head.

I never did like sleep much anyway.… Expand

The acting of the Woman and the kid are great, and it's not a movie that tries to scare you with jump scares. I think, Babadok is a new wave of New Brave World philosophical cinema where characters materialize their fears, hate, and inner evils into popular folk villains. Bottom line, woman who is so fed up with her autistic child’s behavior,I think, Babadok is a new wave of New Brave World philosophical cinema where characters materialize their fears, hate, and inner evils into popular folk villains. Bottom line, woman who is so fed up with her autistic child’s behavior, diverges her hatred toward him (her child) and ex-husband (also genetically accountable for a child being physically unbearable). She expressing her contradictory feelings toward boy who drives her crazy in form of folkloric hallucinations which are at the same time support her madness, propelling the plot forward. In reality, Babadook is an identity of her madness which many mothers with many autistic children would go through. The director’s vision defined this feeling and mapped it with strong intense diabolic association. The importance of this movie is conserved between lines of its symbolism, showing a real feelings of rage that overpowers autistic mother in distress and agony. At the end, she comes in terms with her hate which is real and it is normal. Sometimes, we have to come in terms with ugly side of our psychos. Remarkable that movie will have hard time among all that sugar-coated political correctness where mothers are supposed to be religiously programmed for good only zombies who never feel anything diabolic at all. So, the symbolism might skip many closed minds and remain in the pool of B- horror flicks from Aussie weird artsy mind.… Expand

Sublime. I can't believe this was made on just $30k. Sure, it looks gritty and less polished than the major hollywood fare, but it is genuinely chilling at times and is a pure psychological experience. People who hate this probably don't "getSublime. But after a while the film just goes west and loses it a bit, all of sudden the fear sort of goes and you just sat there utterly confused by what's going on and the ending isn't really what I wanted to happen.

Some people say that the child in the film is really annoying and a reason to not like the film but he's obviously meant to be annoying and weird, he's annoying everyone around him so the director wants the audience to get wound up also by the kid.

Well worth a watch for the first 3/4 of the film even if the ending does lose its way a bit.… Expand

For me, this is the best horror film of all time. This horror movie is juste perfect in every way. When you first look at it, it is really frightening, creepy and unsettling. This movie will give you some serious goosebumps and make yourFor me, this is the best horror film of all time. This horror movie is juste perfect in every way. When you first look at it, it is really frightening, creepy and unsettling. This movie will give you some serious goosebumps and make your hands sweaty. From start to finish, there is tension, suspense and an eerie sensation. But when you dig deeper, this movie is not only about being scared the hell out, it is also a movie about grief, about the emotions you feel when you loose someone you love and how it affects your life. Some people may not understand the ending, but that's because they only see the movie as an horror film, if you look at the ending in the second optic I just described, it's brilliant and perfect. Now to insist on how good it is, there is some other good points about the movie; it incredibly well acted, the use of CGI is extremely limited and there is not a single jumpscare, no cheap loud sounds like in terrible films like Ouija or The gallows. If you are a fan of horror films or just good movies in general, this is a must-see and must-own.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film encounters problems that many low-budget films do, so some of that is excusable. The only two things that bothered me was the reveal of the father's death. Revealing it so early made the tension between the mother and son feel repetitive, had they saved the reveal for maybe 50 minutes in, it would've given everything that was happening between mother and son new context and made the film more interesting.

My only other issue is the child acting, sure Noah Wiseman is better than most child actors, but that does not mean his performance didn't suck me out of the movie every now and then.

But I have no other complaints. Essie Davis is amazing, it has great photography and the atmosphere is thick. Despite it's problems, Jennifer Kent's directorial debut is quite impressive and I hope she is able to work on more projects soon.… Expand

This horror film is frightening, but also incredibly sad. The actors for the mother and child were pretty excellent. It had a deeper emotional resonance with the horror elements than most films in the genre.

A very intriguing horror movie with quite a few horror elements that get the viewer involved in its plot.

The story and its characters are quite a spectacle to watch as they struggle due to their situation. While this isn't necessarily something new in a story like this, the acting and the atmosphere definitely helps sell the movie.

The horror aspect relies heavily on atmosphere, sound and imagination which does help a lot for those who are paying attention. The monster itself is terrifying as most of the events happen within the viewer's head as well as the character's.

I highly recommend this movie as its an interesting take on the horror genre and it does bring its own guns to the table with its gorgeous acting, really well-done setting, an intriguing and horrifying monster that keeps the suspense up along with a good story.… Expand

Of course considering that this movie is in the horror genre, so it indeed loses a lot of points because it follows the usual format, camera angles, clichés, but i felt nothing was in too much quantity, it was all just "ok", nothing came outOf course considering that this movie is in the horror genre, so it indeed loses a lot of points because it follows the usual format, camera angles, clichés, but i felt nothing was in too much quantity, it was all just "ok", nothing came out of the usual, nothing that for me deserves a higher score than a 5, but then, you understand the details of the story that isnt that simple as you thought before, so it gets a bit more score for that reason...
It is also, because of not exagerating in the amount of the clichés the most sufferable horror movie in the past few years, it is not a masterpiece though... didnt quite fetch my full dedication or atention, it was a normal horror movie, with a quite interesting story in fact.
In conclusion, it´s not special, it is quite common, everything happens as you expect it to, even though it is a new story, the film develops just the same as any other horror movie do... it is highly overrated, because people keep getting impressed by the same old story and dont want anything new or exciting from movies... thats why cinema is dropping in quality... 6/10… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie takes such a brilliant approach to introduce and tease the audience with the "monster". However, when it comes down to delivering the goods, it really falls short.
Even though the Babadook is not the main perpetrator in this movie (it is actually Amelia's struggles to move on from Oskar and reason with her kid/accept this is the way Sam is), the portrayal of the Babadook leaves you wanting so much more.
The first half of the movie was an easy 10/10, the anticipation and eeriness of the Babadook were spot on.
The second half was really subpar.
HUGE SPOILER/CONSPIRACY:
At the end of the movie the real villain is easily acknowledged, I said it up top, and Amelia is shown to have domesticated her own demons, come to love Sam as he is, and come to accept the troubling life of single parenting. Hopefully y'all understand what I mean from that.… Expand

The concept was good but the actual writing of the characters was bad with the only good character being the dog. Jennifer Kent did a great Job with the direction, how there are some scenes where it does completely fall apart. Essie Davis does a decent job, but Noah Wiseman is an absolutely terrible child actor. As for the Babadook, he looks awful and in no way intimidating. The Babadook's voice is laughable, somebody give him a strepsil. Overall it's one of the most overrated movies of all time… Expand

An outstanding and purposeful work in the already unimaginative horror genre, this film has very interesting elements and you are a person who enjoy scary movies that do not support gore or cheap scare this is a definitely an important option.

From an early moment, we understand the difficulties that the child brings to his mother, both of which are very poorly understood by all those around them. Sooner, the poor mother seems closer to a fit of nerves or deep depression. This finally happens when the character of a children's book (apparently written by herself) begins to take on a life of its own and to terrorize mother and child. The film is a lesson about depression, mourning and trauma. Sometimes, the bogeyman lives within ourselves and its us that we should be afraid of. The scares exist but the tense and terrifying atmosphere is something that is hardly ignored. Concerning actors, Essie Davis is the protagonist and carries the film on her back with great courage, presenting herself without makeup in order to look much more worn, as it requires her character. She is undoubtedly an artist of great talent, capable of embodying difficult characters.… Expand

The movie started of as confusing and revealed one bit of information at a time. The acting was great and the setting was introduced quite well. Todo o desenvolvimento até o clímax é muito bem feito, mesmo que eu acredite que entre o segundo e o terceiro ato o suspense não tenha sido administrado da melhor maneira. A identidade audiovisual do Babadook é muito bem feita. Seus sons são marcantes e seus movimentos são tão estranhos que causam repulsa em qualquer um.

One of the best modern horror films to this day. It's actually pretty terrifying, and the camerawork is fantastic. The mom actor was phenomenal in this movie. Please check this out if you want to see a modern horror masterpiece. 8/10

No spoilers but your expectation may change if you keep reading. This is a film about a single parent family struggling to get over the death of the father. This manifests in different ways for the son and mother. The psychology of this becomes quite harrowing and deeply sad. I like the non-stereotypical cinematography and great sound design. Acting is excellent throughout, as is the direction. The story is very engaging and the pacing solid. I didn't like the production design all the time as sometimes the house didn’t look like anyone lived there, I found that aspect a little unbelievable. The Babadook book is excellent, so much so I wanted to buy one until I saw how much they are. Overall it is an excellent film well worth watching but don’t expect a monster movie unless you’re expecting a monster of the mind.… Expand
