This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first half hour of this movie is pretty boring. On his own, Tintin is a bland and irritating character. However the movie picks up when the drunken Captain Haddock is introduced. He's much more entertaining and three dimensional than Tintin is. The movie's set pieces are pretty fantastic; there are plenty of long takes filled with a lot of destruction that takes place over huge distances that would be impossible to film in real life. The fight scenes actually look real because we're able to see the characters' attacks contact each other, instead of cutting away before impact or shooting close to hide the distance between the impact of the blow and the target. In real life the actors wouldnâ Expand

Think of James Bond mixed with Indiana Jones in a cartoon. This Action-Adventure incorporates what is needed to make a good film, the action sequences, the humor, and of course the adventure at hand. The only thing really wrong in this movie is that like I said it is more for children and younger people and some of the slapstick humor got to be a little too much. This is a movie to rent. Expand

Spielberg's team of British writers, Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz), Stephen Moffat (Sherlock) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) combine elements from three Tintin stories to produce an exciting adventure but simple mystery.

Watching the fantastic looking animation, it's easy to forget that with the motion-capture, the actors aren't just providing voices but are responsible for all character movements. In terms of performance, Andy Serkis steals the show as the largely inebriated Captain Haddock. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost pop up as bumbling Interpol officers Thomson and Thompson for comic effect.

One thing I couldn't shake from my childhood was how serious, self-righteous and frankly annoying Tintin can be. Obviously that's a criticism of the character not of the movie, but this version didn't go anyway to changing my opinion.

Spielberg evokes pleasant memories of Indiana Jones in several chase sequences and action set pieces, none more so than the intrepid reporter and Haddock riding in a motorbike and sidecar. Not a bad thing at all.

"The Adventures of Tintin" is not one of my personal favorite animated films, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't an enjoyable animated film. It's exciting, it's pretty well-written, it's wonderfully animated and it's well-acted, all good factors that help make the film so great. I feel like it's a film that isn't for everyone, and that's probably why I didn't give it a higher rating even though it's very well-crafted, but don't let my "lower rating" fool you, "The Adventures of Tintin" is definitely an entertaining animated film that you should definitely check out! I've got to say, I did not expect to like it as much as I did. I don't know how faithful it is to the original comic, but it was a really fun and insanely creative adventure film. All the characters were memorable and likable in some way and the CG animation was stunningly detailed while keeping the cartoonish quality on the animation. All the actors are good (I actually thought that the lead actor was Elijah Wood, but it turns out that it's the guy who played Billy Elliot), but special attention should go to Andy Serkis (who you may know as Gollum) on his performance of the drunken ship captain. It shows that he's got a great comedic delivery and can hold his own as a secondary lead. Hopefully he gets more diverse work because of this rather than just voicing monsters. Steven Moffat and Edgar Wright penned the script with one other person and they give the film a very offbeat quality that I think puts this above a lot of animated adventure films. All in all, a really good experience that I wish I'd caught in theaters. Also, gotta give special props to Simon Pegg and Nick Frost who play two very amusing dry comic relief characters. I always love when those two are in a movie together and this is no exception. Go see it. Expand

Directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, with soundtrack of John Williams and a script by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the film features the voices of Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, and other voice actors.

I was never an avid reader of Tintin, but the comic strip was, for me, a good company during childhood and adolescence (still is, sometimes). But I never had a good impression of films based on comic-strips, as always end too stylized or unrealistic. In this case, keeping the film as an animation, I was waiting for something like the comic, and many similarities with the magazine. But my expectations were far from being met by this film, which does not seem able to capture the essence of Tintin. The script, despite being good and consistent to the cinema, don't link to the comic where it was based. On the contrary, it almost rejects it by mixing elements of another magazine and invent many other things that don't fit in the Tintin image, issued by magazines. Therefore, characters seem rather forced, and their reactions don't seem true to what might be expected in the magazines.

The dubbing work looks very good, I didn't notice delays or errors. Most of voice actors used here are seasoned actors, with an excellent voice modulation capability, knowing well how to put voice to achieve the desired effect. The work of animation and visual effects are excellent, very colorful and striking. Its the wonder of digital animation. The soundtrack is very good but I expected something more intense.

Overall, the film is quite interesting and entertaining but becomes boring at certain times and almost can't create a real sense of mystery, suspense and adventure.

I have to say I was taken aback by the quality of the CGI featured in this film - I wouldn't say its entirely impossible to realise its not genuine live action but at the same time, its a lot better than the CGI we may have seen glimpses of in films, say, 20-30 years ago. On the down side, the ground looked clearly fake, with cobblestones all appearing very much flat but on the plus side, peoples faces seemed much more believable/realistic, with sunlight shone over many parts of their bodies and items shown from various angles, as if im a sort of 3D form. You can all but see individual hairs on Tintins head and the soft fur on Snowys coat, so I was quite impressed with that. The characters skin does look a bit suspiciously smooth but I still felt the quality of the CGI overall was better than a lot of what I've seen. I should perhaps say at this point that the film was released in 2011, so its already over 5 years old. The plot is quite intriguing - I remember reading Tintin stories as a child, many years ago in the early 1990s I suppose (alongside Asterix and Obelix and the like) but I don't think I've seen any other such film adaptation of the character. The pretty impressive CGI did make it more engrossing for me. I found Snowys behaviour quite endearing, reminding me a bit of how our dog at home acts herself. The film is surprisingly dark in tone at times, especially considering its a PG film but I imagine its the kind of film that could quite easily keep slightly older kids watching - very young viewers may find it mildly frightening but, moreso, perhaps a little boring, as the plot pace is a little slow and it isn't exactly permanently chock full of action scenes either.

Cast wise, the film features contributions from the following well known actors, who voice the various characters - Jamie Bell as the titular character, Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, Daniel Craig as Sakharine, Nick Frost as Thomson and Simon Pegg as Thompson (the Thompson twins being regular characters in the Tintin comics - rather incompetent detectives originally from London). The voices were all quite good, sounding quite realistic and I'd say they helped draw me further in to the film in general.

The music present is pretty much what you'd expect of such a film, or perhaps moreso what you'd expect of a Steven Spielberg film, with many instrumentals heared, indeed orchestras are heavily present. Its also worth baring in mind that this film is set in the past and not the present day. I don't believe the film actually states what year, or even decade, its set in but if I had to guess, I'd say its set around about the 1920s or 1930s, thereabouts.

Content wise, the film contains numerous depictions of violence, of course this is a comic violence, in as much as its not real live action but it could still be frightening for young viewers. There are many gun shots and blood smears are shown ocassionally but there is little in the way of detailed or graphic extended scenes of injuries and the like. There are various chase type scenes with our hero trying to escape certain situations, which younger viewers may find either thrilling or somewhat frightening perhaps. One of the characters is shown drinking alcohol to excess and smoke. As mentioned, the film may frighten very young viewers and due to this, its been given a PG rating. While the plot is a bit slow at one or points, I also felt that it was a bit complicated as well, which may well frustrate some, younger, viewers, I'd imagine. I found the first half of the film to be a lot more engaging and intriguing than the 2nd half and I admit that I found myself a bit disinterested and not as engaged with it as I was at the start of the film. I'm (believe it or not) not a child though and I do reckon that this film is quite good for younger viewers - overall I feel the 4 star rating is about right, so im sticking with that but also admitting that it didn't especially engage me during the last quarter of the film or thereabouts.

Yes I'd recommend this, as I felt it was a somewhat surprisingly engrossing watch, with a good use of CGI and some decent examples of voice acting. It is a bit slow, plot pace wise and the plot itself is somewhat complicated but its an enjoyable watch regardless, so I'd recommend it on that basis.
