The visuals definitely raises a higher score for exquisite character designs and creative transitions in the editing. However I did find the long cuts to get tiring once in a while. It felt like I was playing a video game rather than watching a movie. The story in Tintin is something you would expect in the TiniTin comics or animated series. The film is one misadventure journey and you know right away what is going to happen next. The plot is predictable, but some of the choice in actions and comedy were unique and were subtle to fit well within the Tintin universe. Despite the flow of the movie being clunky at times, The Adventures of Tintin is still a enjoyable family flick. Expand

Spielberg pretty much nails Tintin, plays out like an animated Indiana Jones and has great animation and humour. Maybe feels a little safe.

Tintin was reminiscent of the Indiana Jones films in terms of spirit and fun. It was by far the prettiest animated movie I've ever seen. It had some fantastic action sequences - namely the motorcycle chase scene towards the films end. It had comedy - Captain Haddock is a marvelous drunken mess of a character and provided many laughs throughout the adventure. Despite these pro's, I felt unsatisfied. Why? Foremost, the movies' plot felt convoluted and boring. Also, Tintin, as a character, seemed very one-dimensional; he seemed, as the Brits would say, a bit of a 'wanker.' It just goes to show that a good story and interesting characters will always be more important than the most incredible visual extravaganza. Expand

The film uses a motion-capture technology, of movement and expression of real actors and that is applied in a highly detailed CG and 3D movie, with astonishing results.

The story is much like the classic stories, and presents the familiar characters of the comic - is a movie that entertains but serves more as a showcase for the recent advances advances in CG and motion-capture. It's a good and fun movie to watch with the family: My score: 7.8 / 10.0.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first half hour of this movie is pretty boring. On his own, Tintin is a bland and irritating character. However the movie picks up when the drunken Captain Haddock is introduced. He's much more entertaining and three dimensional than Tintin is. The movie's set pieces are pretty fantastic; there are plenty of long takes filled with a lot of destruction that takes place over huge distances that would be impossible to film in real life. The fight scenes actually look real because we're able to see the characters' attacks contact each other, instead of cutting away before impact or shooting close to hide the distance between the impact of the blow and the target. In real life the actors wouldnâ Expand

Think of James Bond mixed with Indiana Jones in a cartoon. This Action-Adventure incorporates what is needed to make a good film, the action sequences, the humor, and of course the adventure at hand. The only thing really wrong in this movie is that like I said it is more for children and younger people and some of the slapstick humor got to be a little too much. This is a movie to rent. Expand

Spielberg's team of British writers, Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz), Stephen Moffat (Sherlock) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) combine elements from three Tintin stories to produce an exciting adventure but simple mystery.

Watching the fantastic looking animation, it's easy to forget that with the motion-capture, the actors aren't just providing voices but are responsible for all character movements. In terms of performance, Andy Serkis steals the show as the largely inebriated Captain Haddock. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost pop up as bumbling Interpol officers Thomson and Thompson for comic effect.

One thing I couldn't shake from my childhood was how serious, self-righteous and frankly annoying Tintin can be. Obviously that's a criticism of the character not of the movie, but this version didn't go anyway to changing my opinion.

Spielberg evokes pleasant memories of Indiana Jones in several chase sequences and action set pieces, none more so than the intrepid reporter and Haddock riding in a motorbike and sidecar. Not a bad thing at all.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Just like the comics, it might also be a little hard to follow (especially for youngsters) and the characters don't get as much attention as the action does.
VERDICT: A fast-paced thrill ride well worth a watch, especially for the original Tintin fans. It's a great bit of fun from Spielberg.

Adapted from the graphic novels by Herge, this adaptation of Tintin is remarkably true to the source material. While I am not sure that a hyper-realistic motion capture animation style fit the world of Tintin, the performances are quite good. The script at times is clunky and dated, but thrilling action sequences make it easy to overlook. Fun for the whole family, give Tintin a watch if you want to know where Spielberg got the inspiration for Indiana Jones. Expand

Especial atención al magnífico plano secuencia de pura acción que oscila hacia el final de la cinta. Noto que es un metraje centrado mucho más a un público juvenil / adolescente que a los más pequeños de la casa. Recomendada.

I have to say I was taken aback by the quality of the CGI featured in this film - I wouldn't say its entirely impossible to realise its not genuine live action but at the same time, its a lot better than the CGI we may have seen glimpses of in films, say, 20-30 years ago. On the down side, the ground looked clearly fake, with cobblestones all appearing very much flat but on the plus side, peoples faces seemed much more believable/realistic, with sunlight shone over many parts of their bodies and items shown from various angles, as if im a sort of 3D form. You can all but see individual hairs on Tintins head and the soft fur on Snowys coat, so I was quite impressed with that. The characters skin does look a bit suspiciously smooth but I still felt the quality of the CGI overall was better than a lot of what I've seen. I should perhaps say at this point that the film was released in 2011, so its already over 5 years old. The plot is quite intriguing - I remember reading Tintin stories as a child, many years ago in the early 1990s I suppose (alongside Asterix and Obelix and the like) but I don't think I've seen any other such film adaptation of the character. The pretty impressive CGI did make it more engrossing for me. I found Snowys behaviour quite endearing, reminding me a bit of how our dog at home acts herself. The film is surprisingly dark in tone at times, especially considering its a PG film but I imagine its the kind of film that could quite easily keep slightly older kids watching - very young viewers may find it mildly frightening but, moreso, perhaps a little boring, as the plot pace is a little slow and it isn't exactly permanently chock full of action scenes either.

Cast wise, the film features contributions from the following well known actors, who voice the various characters - Jamie Bell as the titular character, Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, Daniel Craig as Sakharine, Nick Frost as Thomson and Simon Pegg as Thompson (the Thompson twins being regular characters in the Tintin comics - rather incompetent detectives originally from London). The voices were all quite good, sounding quite realistic and I'd say they helped draw me further in to the film in general.

The music present is pretty much what you'd expect of such a film, or perhaps moreso what you'd expect of a Steven Spielberg film, with many instrumentals heared, indeed orchestras are heavily present. Its also worth baring in mind that this film is set in the past and not the present day. I don't believe the film actually states what year, or even decade, its set in but if I had to guess, I'd say its set around about the 1920s or 1930s, thereabouts.

Content wise, the film contains numerous depictions of violence, of course this is a comic violence, in as much as its not real live action but it could still be frightening for young viewers. There are many gun shots and blood smears are shown ocassionally but there is little in the way of detailed or graphic extended scenes of injuries and the like. There are various chase type scenes with our hero trying to escape certain situations, which younger viewers may find either thrilling or somewhat frightening perhaps. One of the characters is shown drinking alcohol to excess and smoke. As mentioned, the film may frighten very young viewers and due to this, its been given a PG rating. While the plot is a bit slow at one or points, I also felt that it was a bit complicated as well, which may well frustrate some, younger, viewers, I'd imagine. I found the first half of the film to be a lot more engaging and intriguing than the 2nd half and I admit that I found myself a bit disinterested and not as engaged with it as I was at the start of the film. I'm (believe it or not) not a child though and I do reckon that this film is quite good for younger viewers - overall I feel the 4 star rating is about right, so im sticking with that but also admitting that it didn't especially engage me during the last quarter of the film or thereabouts.

Yes I'd recommend this, as I felt it was a somewhat surprisingly engrossing watch, with a good use of CGI and some decent examples of voice acting. It is a bit slow, plot pace wise and the plot itself is somewhat complicated but its an enjoyable watch regardless, so I'd recommend it on that basis.

I realize that the movie is fallible. Here is a super hard to make, beautiful looking movie with a screenplay that wasn't 100%. "that's okay, things will pick up once Tintin hits the road" i thought. But not really. the jokes continued to be hit or miss (not funny enough for adults, and possibly out of grasp for children due to all the alcohol references). And that ambiguous demographic tone sums up the whole movie for me in the end. Too much for kids, and too shallow for adults. Not to mention the second half of the movie really drags. Overall, the movie isn't a complete waste of time and i would probably see the sequel if it got favorable word of mouth. I must say that Tintin is one of the most beautiful looking animated films i've ever seen. That's why it pains me that it wasn't put to better use. Major props to the artists behind the animation though. The film is absolutely stunning to look at. Expand

Spielberg's attempt at Motion Capture technology looks fantastic, with great art direction and lighting with scenes that almost look perfect. The script is designed to inspire children to wanting to learn, explore and become smart kids. It's a literate, clever and high brow family film that really could have reached more greater heights. The trouble is in the three central characters - TinTin, Snowy the Dog(who was my favorite) and the weakest of the bunch - A Drunk Sea Captain who struggles under the lineage of a damned Sir Francis Drake. I didn't connect with the human characters in the film. Neither the narrative or the characters match the scenery and fun that a movie like this should have. This could have been much better. Expand

What a shame, because it looks gorgeous! I wanted to like it SO much, but there were too many problems to overlook. The biggest obstacle for me was the intentional choice to render some of the characters with deadpan human-like realism, while drawing others as caricatures with exaggerated facial features...especially big noses. Not just big, but gargantuan noses. We all just kept asking "why?" Why make the choice to draw the settings and objects to look absolutely real, and then fill it with characters that look out of place. There is a very clever moment in the beginning when Tintin is sitting down at a street bazaar to have his picture drawn, and he marvels at how good it looks, even though it appears to be a "normal" crude cartoon drawing. Seeing the two styles of rendering side by side only enhances the incredible accomplishment they achieved with the realistic drawings. Another puzzlement comes with Spielberg's choice to make Tintin appear as such a young boy. He looks ten, but lives alone, carries a gun, shoots skillfully at people, has a job that he has held for quite awhile, drives, and also flies airplanes. A young man of 18 or 19 feels appropriate with his circumstances, but not a little boy. I guess I will always question the need for a cartoon that hires "real" actors for their voices, puts them in special computer suits to capture their "real" movements, and is then drawn with such meticulous attention to detail that it looks "real"...Why? What is the point? Why not just film it from the beginning with "real" actors and "real locations"? Looking forward to Warhorse. Expand

Animations of Tintin were made, 30 minute long stories I think, that followed Hergé's works exactly, and these were fantastic! I think Tintin is simply not meant to be made into full-length feature films of 2 hours. Mixing the characters and plots of Hergé's Tintin stories AND adding in new "Hollywoodized" content (the crane fight and the bazooka, etc...), was an awful decision.

It was fantastic watching the first 15 minutes of the Secret of the Unicorn, haha, and then we suddenly switch to the Crab with the Golden Claws, but mix the characters and plots from the two. What a mess. The visuals are fun to watch, the computer rendering that is, but the story and what they have done with Hergé's work is a mess!

I wonder how the Asterix "real people" films worked out. The Asterix stories are similar in length to Tintin I think. I wonder what the French did with Asterix?!

The same can be said for the movie overall. It just never stops long enough to gain any emotional traction. Expand

I thought the motion capture animation looked like an interesting idea for adding some oomph to the simple-but-charming illustrations of the original material, and I was glad to hear they decided to adapt the Secret of the Unicorn arc, which stands out as one of the best stories in the oeuvre.

Unfortunately, the result was mediocre. Tintin the character is fine as portrayed ("Great snakes!"), but then he was always just the generically heroic straight man who existed mainly to keep the story moving forward. The real charm of the series has always been the supporting players, none more so than the irascible, irrepressible Captain Haddock, and this is where the movie falls short. The Captain in particular is handled just terribly; he's presented as a sloppy, drunken maniac, constantly bouncing off the walls and either bellowing at the top of his lungs or wallowing in sniveling self-pity. They reduce him to a broad comic relief buffoon who is far less entertaining than the character from the books (plus they give him a heavy Scottish brogue, which was absent from his written dialogue). Other than him, the Thomson twins are merely adequate, as is Bianca Castafiore (why they would decide to include her and leave out Professor Calculus I can't imagine). The one character I thought they really handled well was Snowy, who both looks adorable and acts like the Snowy I grew up with.

While I thought the motion capture animation was fine, it bothered me how they kept bending over backwards to create enormous setpieces full of pratfalls and over-the-top destruction. Yes, Tintin gets into his share of scrapes, but he's not James Bond. It's a stretch to have him zipping all over a Middle Eastern city on a motorcycle laying waste with a bazooka and playing chicken with a building-crushing tank. And don't even get me started on the dueling cranes. All of this, plus the fact that they mashed up two distinct Tintin stories for no apparent reason, leads me to suspect the creators didn't have much appreciation for the source material and were just trying to make a generic action-comedy to pack butts into seats.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, with soundtrack of John Williams and a script by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the film features the voices of Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, and other voice actors.

I was never an avid reader of Tintin, but the comic strip was, for me, a good company during childhood and adolescence (still is, sometimes). But I never had a good impression of films based on comic-strips, as always end too stylized or unrealistic. In this case, keeping the film as an animation, I was waiting for something like the comic, and many similarities with the magazine. But my expectations were far from being met by this film, which does not seem able to capture the essence of Tintin. The script, despite being good and consistent to the cinema, don't link to the comic where it was based. On the contrary, it almost rejects it by mixing elements of another magazine and invent many other things that don't fit in the Tintin image, issued by magazines. Therefore, characters seem rather forced, and their reactions don't seem true to what might be expected in the magazines.

The dubbing work looks very good, I didn't notice delays or errors. Most of voice actors used here are seasoned actors, with an excellent voice modulation capability, knowing well how to put voice to achieve the desired effect. The work of animation and visual effects are excellent, very colorful and striking. Its the wonder of digital animation. The soundtrack is very good but I expected something more intense.

Overall, the film is quite interesting and entertaining but becomes boring at certain times and almost can't create a real sense of mystery, suspense and adventure.

As somebody who isn't familiar with the comic books, I found this movie boring, and that it was trying too hard to be funny, when it wasn't, I can see the appeal, but I didn't like it.

The dead-eyed zombies that people motion-capture films are back to foul the reputation of the most beautiful comic strip of all time. Everything has been lost. The story is feeble. The images are ugly. The voic-work is inappropriate. Stay well away.

How many motion capture 'animated' films like this do they have to make before Hollywood realizes the audience does not like them. Spielberg has totally run out of steam as a director and should have stopped while he was ahead. I didn't like it at all; too much violence; not a simple story; no poetry; no swearing from Captain Haddock; some names have been changed (to adapt to the US market?)
