While not my personalFor starters I like Tim Burton. He has been hit and miss this decade(Planet of the Apes being his worst), but when he is good(Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Ed Wood, Vincent, Beetle Juice and Big Fish) he is good. While not my personal favourite of his films, Sweeney Todd was very well done. Is it as good as the Broadway musical? No, the Broadway musical is a true masterpiece so this movie had a lot to live up to. And is it as good as the 80s stage version with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury? Personally, again I think not. These aside, Burton's take is one of his better works not only this decade but in his career.

Sweeney Todd is a very unique film and very deftly realised. Few musicals have tackled such a dark theme or have boasted such a distinctive look, but this works extremely well. Burton directs wonderfully, and the script is deliciously macabre. The production design won an Oscar, and deservedly so, as it is astounding with all the palette of blacks and greys that contrast perfectly with Sweeney's cut-throat razor. Likewise with the music, Stephen Sondheim's songs and score are simply magnificent though I was disappointed at the omission of Sweeney's ballad which is superlative. The story is just as macabre as the script with a suitably grotesque and over-the-top last act and the murders are very, very bloody.

Last but not least the acting. What can I say? Nothing wrong as far as I can see. Johnny Depp is a wonderful and charismatic presence, and Helen Bonham Carter matches him perfectly as Mrs Lovett. Neither are trained vocalists, but they get into their songs with gusto and also tackle cockney accents and do an above-average job there too. Plus Alan Rickman's(who I love) Judge Terpin is the epitome of evil. All in all, an atmospheric and deliciously dark film and one of Burton's best. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Yeah this is one of the horror movies that is honestly a masterpiece I don’t know why I love it so much from the way it’s shot holy god. The cinematography is out of this world magnificent it feels like it came straight out of the 1800s from the dark way it was shot everyone is so grey and white, frankly that’s really the only consistent colors you see besides one scene with Ms Lovett and all the blood sprays. The kills are out of this world great too sure they are mostly throat slits but the music that is accompanying the kills works so well. I watched this because I was doing a musical and I wanted to practice my voice so I watched this and i never got to practice because the music was so great almost every song it a great song after the other. The cast too my god of course since it’s Tim Burton Johnny Depp is in the movie and I heard so many people complain about his singing but I find it really enjoyable to hear, Helena Bonham Carter is also very good her songs are a great listen. But I have to mention the late great Alan Rickman and he and Depp have some duets together and they are some of the best songs of the whole movie, the rest of the cast is great too but they are the main ones that really stick out. I can’t give this movie enough praise watch it it’s on Netflix. Expand

"There was a barber and his wife, and she was beautiful. A foolish barber and his wife. She was his reason and his life, and she was beautiful. And she was virtuous. And he was..."

The last great movie from Tim Burton.

Sure, Frankenweenie and Big Eyes were fine, but I honestly felt his heart and soul went into this movie than his recent ones.

The bloodiest musical ever staged and I loved it.

'Sweeney Todd' is a fantastic dark tale of bloody revenge with bottled up sorrow. There's something incredibly spectral about the atmosphere throughout the movie that uniquely blends shadows and darkness to create traumatic events. However, the movie isn't shy away of dark humor.

With it being a musical, the songs are all equally brilliant. My favorites are between "My friends" and "Pretty women". In "My Friends", Depp not only sings, but express so much emotion through his eyes and face. There's sadness, pain, hatred, and a dirty plan sparkling in the barbers eyes, which was marvelously portrayed by Johnny Depp. I don't understand why people criticize Depp's singing, it's so beautiful.

Helen Bonham Carter is spectacular as the ghostly, but still gorgeous looking Mrs. Lovett. I love how even in her fantasies during the musical segment "By the Sea", Sweeney is still uninterested in her, because she never sees him smile, so even in her fantasies he's still rejecting her. It's pretty sad to be honest.

Sacha Baron Cohen, Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall were all excellent in their meaty roles. I find it interesting that a lot of the main characters in the movie are horrible people. I mean there are some decent folks in the story, but evil overshadows them.

The production and costume design are freaking superb and stood at to me the most. It adds so much to the environment and the overall tone of the movie. The score gives a major Phantom of the Opera vibe and I freaking love it.

Overall rating: Coming to think of it, Burton just made the best adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide. Sweeney Todd wants to kill and Benjamin Barker wants to see his family.

Directed by Tim Burton, this film has a screenplay by John Logan, based on the stage musical of the same name written by Hugh Wheeler. The cast is headed by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman and Jayne Wisener, among other actors.

Tim Burton is a director about which I have many reservations. No one disputes his creativity, not their ability to create great movies. The problem is that he makes excellent films with the same ease that makes huge mistakes. So, I had few expectations when I went to see this film, and it still fell more when I saw it was going to be a musical. However, I was very pleased with what I saw, and I think Burton, this time, did a great job.

I don't know the original play, so I cannot tell if the script was true to the original story but I think it's a good script, doesn't make mistakes or leaves important questions unanswered, besides having interesting twists and an excellent finish. The actors were excellent, particularly Depp, who knew how to combine his taste for bizarre roles to a strong and deep voice. Helena Bonham Carter also shone, in an obscure character whose obsessive love leads to a journey to doom. This macabre couple really managed to give life to this film, turning it into a mix of horror and musical movie, which thickens as the plot goes to the end. Its a film that proves without doubt that the musicals doesn't need to be romantic and very cuddly, since the musicals can be seen as a scenic (and cinematic) variant of the opera, a so popular and dramatic spectacle in the past.

The sets, costumes and visual effects are excellent. We are talking about Burton, so it couldn't be otherwise. Its a fairly graphic film to some extent, with several liters of arterial blood and scenes that may shock more sensitive people. The soundtrack is the responsibility of Stephen Sondheim (author of the original musics and lyrics) and is excellent, remaining in our memory for a long time.

Fun to watch at least once by yourself and then later with others. One of the better musical movies but I didn't feel enraptured by it. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

Musical genre has always been the heart of a theatre play or act and not so much in a film except some exceptions probably because not everyone gets it right but this time it has arrived, the long last wait of the musical film that we all deserved. Sweeney Todd is the darkest project ever by Tim; that is saying a lot considering his history, and the best one too for the first time the movie gives enough work to the audience to mesmerize them. Tim Burton has matured himself as a director far better than probably anyone for his execution is dot perfect along with editing and also a more reasonable world to settle in. Johnny Depp as always gives his heart to Tim and this time he deserved this movie where every side of him is visible as clear as a crystal; he is a revelation in it with a great supporting cast like Alan Rickman. Sweeney Todd isn't goofy or even peculiar considering its premise but sharply to the point with smart writing, horrifying characters and sketchy tone that breeds the darkest phase in a human life with stellar performances.

From a strictly objective, dumbly American consumerist perspective, this is not a great movie - it's hardly even an entertaining movie. Johnny Depp simply plays a Johnny-Depp like character with weird hair and the kind of brooding secret past life any misunderstood 15 year old would wish to have. He and Helena Bonham-Carter seem to be having a film-long contest to see who can conjure the hardest to understand Cockney accent. And again, call me a cynic, but the "singing" portions are not even well-masked as genuine.

The story is simple enough to understand, but you'll be treated to almost nothing but song for the first 30 minutes, which doesn't help make it any easier. It has the traditional absurdist twists of a musical which is entertaining enough, but ultimately the movie has no real charm. The artistic direction is admirable, I suppose - the bleakness of a dirty and gray world contrasted with the vengeful color of blood. Unfortunately, it looks like Burton purchased a Campbell's soup factory and used all of the tomato they had for his blood rigs.

The score is phenomenal and the musical numbers are entirely enthralling and brilliantly done. They are so good, in fact, you almost forget you are watching a film about a barber who slits peoples throats. The acting and singing from the entire cast is very good and this is truly a role only Johnny Depp could play. Brilliantly shot and designed, the film is simply beautiful to look at with some seriously killer costumes to be found here. Tim Burton really hits a home run with the direction of this film, managing the extreme gore with the emotional element at the center of the story, as well as not overdoing it with the musical numbers. The ones that are here are exceptionally well done, but luckily it never feels like overkill. Above all though, I fell in love with the look and feel of the film. Truly, it was really beautiful. What's good about it? Many things. The costumes are superb, the cinematography is beautiful, and yes, everyone can sing. Johnny Depp, who is always interesting, does what became an Oscar-nominated performance in the title role. It's a reminder that when he is on his game, it's a fabulous ride. This movie is based upon the Stephen Sondheim award-winning musical but is much shorter and the humor is trimmed as well, making this a melodrama instead of a comedy. But, it's still highly entertaining and I would recommend getting a little familiar with the lyrics to the songs before watching because it just makes watching better. Sweeney Todd was Benjamin Barker, a young man with a beautiful family, who is torn apart from them by a lecherous judge, played with appropriate sliminess by Alan Rickman. The New York Times opera critic gave Depp high marks and I think was hoping for more from Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Lovett), but she does well enough and shines in songs like A Little Priest, By the Sea, and Not While I'm Around. I do have to admit that I am not a fan of movie musicals, but this one is the exception. One of Tim Burton's best, right up there with Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood. Expand

A re-telling of the classic
We knew Johnny Depp was a diverse actor but he really turned his hand to something different with his long time BFF Tim Burton, and this is certainly one of their finer moments in the career long collaborations.
A re-telling of the classic barber in Fleet Street, Depp stars as the titular barber turned killer after tragedy befalls his happy family.
The musical score put forward by Steven Sondheim is wonderfully gripping and heartbreaking, as Sweeney Todd, formerly Benjamin Barker, returns to London to seek revenge on those who wronged him, namely Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) and Beadle Bamford (Timothy Spall).
Todd re-opens his barber shop above the pie store, owned by Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) and quickly establishes himself as quite the dangerously cunning and gentle barber, all aiming to the bigger picture of righting the wrongs of his past. He soon visits a market and we are introduced to the comedic Adolfo Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen) who is is a rip-off merchant selling hair growth elixir for bald men.
The film grows predictably darker and more horrific as the minutes tick on, as does the the musical numbers.
This is a tale of revenge and despair, and the talent involved do an excellent (and surprising) job of singing their own solo pieces along with the ensemble numbers, Depp is is stellar in what can only be described as a dark and nerving turn as the London barber.
Burton has perfectly put his own unique gothic touch to proceedings with the characters of Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett, who are equally as dangerous yet likeable, never really knowing who we are supposed to dislike throughout the film.
It has the perfect score to immediately capture and entice the viewer of any particular audience, whether its a catchy and humorous song (Baron Cohen's "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir") or a heartfelt and sombre tone (Todd's "Epiphany"), they all capture the mood and pace of the film, which sets up a thrilling and satisfying final act that will both please and shock.
Burton and Depp certainly chose a different direction for this film, and was an exceptionally brilliant idea to do so.

What I really want to know is what possessed Sir Malcom Arnold in the late 1970's to think "Hey! This horror story would make a great musical!". This was the weirdest and most disturbing musical I have ever seen, but I guess since it's a remake of a Broadway musical it is true to its roots. +10 for Tim Burton having the guts to release Sweeney Todd as a movie. The acting and singing was superb. I'm not sure I ever want to see it again because it is so gory and violent, but it is what it is. BTW: Interesting fact: Johnny Depp was absolutely horrified when he read the script. Because of all of the violence and cannibalism in it? -- Nope. Because for the first few minutes of the film he would have to play a "normal person" - OH THE HORROR!!!! LOL Expand

Despite not having any prior musical training, both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are able to deliver the lines and pitches of the musical's songs with feeling, and I especially enjoyed Depp's emotional, simmering performance of the song 'Epiphany'. In fact, pretty much every aspect of Sweeney Todd drips atmosphere and evokes powerful emotions - the brooding score, the mysterious, gothic and haunting depiction of Victorian London, with it's uniformly deathly dark and sombre colours contrasting perfectly with the bright red fountains of blood that gush from Todd's unwitting victims, and the excellent costumes. The only minor niggles are the film's rather short length and Ed Sander's largely too 'Oliver'-like performance. This has to be my favourite film of all time and I highly recommend it. Expand

Burton is running out of steam, and has been for quite some time: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was blah; Corpse Bridge was crap. He did Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Sleepy Hollow; three pretty good films. What was Sweeney Todd (aside from another adaptation of someone else's work)?--A watered down (or bloodied up) uninspired mish mash of those three films. I mean that is exactly what it is, so exactly. I mean of course Burton is going to utilize his signature style in his works, but the similarities are beyond striking. If I didn't know it was Burton, I'd think it was a crap ripoff of him. Sweeney Todd is bland and cheap, no matter how much money they put into it. For once, we get a movie I've been a movie-goer since I was little. I've been watching movies on and off the TV. There isn't much I haven't already seen and there isn't much I can't compare to something else. For once, we get a movie that's quality, that's creative. It's a remake of a play and it shows. I think with all the effort put through this , some people (COUGH PHIL.D COUGH) should have more consideration. Instead of hating the movie just because it's made by Tim Burton, you should try actually watching it. I am a musician and I would say that the camera play was dead-on with the music. It always FIT it was always where it should be. Timing things such as gestures to every beat made it all the more interesting as a musical comedy. The plot was simply revenge involving Judge Turpin and Benjamin (AKA Sweeney Todd) Barker, played by J-Depp. Johnny Depp is a brilliant actor, as Tim Burton said it, the actors weren't meant to be full of life in their movements, because that's what the make-up was for. How contradictory would it be for a "cold, bitter man" to play "lively musical dancer", do you think? The singing I wouldn't find anything "embarrassing" into as some have said. Johnny Depp didn't strike a note wrong and he was singing very well. Everything playing in that movie I found catchy and it's really cruel to pretend that it's nothing but scrap heap. There was TREMENDOUS effort put through this by the actors and the crew. There aren't bad movies: Just bad audiences. Expand

But as for those brilliant reviewers who say they hate the movie and list "boring boring boring" or eloquently complain that "nobody dance" during the movie, they're not really giving much detail. -I like the movie because the plot was simple and compelling, the idea of the two lovers who can't be together (Depp's character and the woman he loved), but twisted around slightly by echoing them in a younger generation of lovers who have hope of happiness. I thought the visual style was excellent, and here's an EXAMPLE (people need to give more of these): the moment when Depp's character gets his box of barber-knives back and holds one up to his face, and you see his mad, twisted reflection in the clear silver of the blade, and he says that his arms is once again complete. Anyone want to argue that Burton's directing or Depp's acting or the script was off during that moment? London was also grim and beautifully depicted, as fits the whole Industrial Revolution look of it. -The music was fantastic and the singing was much better than I thought it would be (people tended to cringe when the first line of the movie was sung, but then they started getting into it). -Acting was great, especially Depp and Rickman. My only problem was the ending was rushed and flawed, since we don't really get any info on the young lovers. -Good movie; watch it, then judge it. Expand

You know I'm right. His 'unique visual style' is totally stagnant, he really hasn't got much feeling for pace or character or timing. He's just 'quirky', and his quirks are getting old really fast. I've seen more captivating insights into the nature of man during my little brothers christmas pageants. I can put up with one or two godawful pieces of trash, but Sweeny Todd has confirmed my suspicions that Burton is clueless. The less said about the singing the better. Depp, frankly, is embarrassing. The songs themselves are totally forgettable, and not at all funny. The plot is predictable. Remarkably, the minor characters are the only redeeming feature in this disaster. I know this is not the accepted opinion among the self-appointed intelligentsia elites, especially I should start my review by saying that I have seen all Sondheim musicals on stage without exception, and I have never been a big fan of his. I know this is not the accepted opinion among the self-appointed intelligentsia elites, especially in NYC, but it is an opinion shared by many. Just count the ticket receipts from many of his plays, especially his latest ones, worldwide. Having said that, this is a movie, not a stage musical, but it is still a musical, which happens to be a movie. And I still didn't like it. I didn't like the musical part, I didn't care for the production values, and I didn't care for the blood and gore, that I can see anytime by watching any movie in the Chainsaw Massacre film series. I did like H.Bonham carter, despite all, but little else. I get the sense that many, especially critics, prefer not to criticize anything that comes from Sondheim, instead of voicing their truer, and more intimate opinions, from fear, rather than from their integrity.
