Sucker Punch is what happens when a straight white male with an obsession with Ayn Rand and a 13-year-old boy's mindset of what's cool and edgy attempts to make a pro-feminist film.

Felt like a bit underrated on RT, a bit overrated on IMDb, so my Metacritic rate is a stable 5. For me, it wasn't that terrible, felt like an okay steampunk tale with a beginner Harley Quinn.

Zack Snyder nails the soundtrack, visuals & action sequences impeccably. However, this has to be one of the most misunderstood films ever created. So, here's a quick summary of the story.

The character baby doll suffers a traumatic experience at the hands of her father, who is also responsible for her mother's death. As an act of desperation, she tries to save her sister from the abusive father with a gun, but accidently shoots her sister instead. As a result, baby doll is sent to a mental institution. The father pays off a corrupt worker, in the hopes of forcing a lobotomy.

This is where the story starts to get trippy, as an act of desperation, baby doll starts to go crazy by changing her perception, where she imagines being left in a whorehouse (metaphor for the mental institution). In order to escape the whorehouse, she must dwell further into her imaginations, where she meets a wise man, who tells her to collect 5 items in order to escape. These 5 items are collected by baby doll through 5 separate imaginations. When the plan fails at the end of the movie, baby doll creates a distraction to help sweet pea escape, where she meets the wise man driving the bus. This film was a commentary/representation of how the gaming culture and men tend to view woman. Also, the ending of this film makes you question who's point of view the story is being told. Baby doll, sweet pea or the bus driver? In my humble opinion, this film should have been a hard R instead of its PG rating. This would have allowed Zack Snyder to make this film a lot more brutal & disturbing.

Another Zack Snyder film that has being completely misunderstood and obliterated by critics. It must be something personal, really.
I love this film. I find it beautiful, moving, heart breaking and inspiring.
Escapism can be a coping mechanism. Fantasies can empower. Girls can have power fantasies too, you know. Who didn't want to be Sailor Moon at some point in their lives?
Although at the end of the day you can't escape reality completely. Real life problems are still there waiting for you in your daydreams. Consequences are inevitable. Sacrifices have to be made.
Zack Snyder is usually accused of making movies that are too bleak, nihilistic and hopeless. But this is not a bleak, nihilistic or hopeless movie. There is hope for the survivors. Things can get better. The abusers do pay for their crimes. Even the ones that made mistakes can find redemption. Sacrifices are not worthless.
Do not judge these girls by the clothes they wear. Do not judge this movie as misogynistic or sexist just because the girls are pretty and sexy. A girl can kick ass and look sexy at the same time. And these girls are wearing more clothes that all the men in 300 (2006), so don't call Zack sexist. He just likes pretty people.

Watched this in 2020, aware of its mixed reputation. Can't say I really liked it, but at the same time it was different from most action movies and that's a plus.
A movie that blends fantasy and reality, with the former mirrored by the latter (or vice versa). It fails where most action movies do, in the boring action sequences that fail to capture one's attention for long. Also, characters are barely there, underdeveloped and uninteresting.
Like most movies nowadays, it unfortunately proposes yet again the assumption "man is evil, cowardly and good for nothing; woman is good, courageous and unstoppable", and yet it failed to please feminists nonetheless, duh. That's because they want movies like "The Last Jedis" where men are not only all of the above, but also under complete control by women, treated like worthless pets that are punished when they pee on the carpet.
All in all, an interesting and unusual concept but a less than perfect execution. A movie that does look like a videogame or several, now Demon's Souls, now stampunk CoD, now Deus Ex. I don't know what would make it better, but then I generally dislike movies that are too heavy on action. At least it's more absurd action than usual.

There are not enough words to describe the love I have for this film .It truly is a work of art.
When I first saw this in the cinema back in 2011 I walked out very puzzled and confused , I understood the whole , '"inception " esque aspect and the whole connection in a little girl's mind . It reminded me a lot of Alice in wonderland that a character seems to dive into her mind to escape a darker reality .
The cast was excellent especially browning and Oscar Issac. Browning tho pretty much sold her scenes with her pouts and eyes she carried the movie alongside her girls.
But when it ended I felt like scenes were missing and that the movie was going by pretty fast and playing it safe it certain scenes .
The visuals were breathtaking and the soundtrack was awesome but I felt disappointed and knew I needed to revisit this once the Blu-ray came out
And what do you know an extended cut gets released and from then on out my perception of this film changed drastically .
For starters the opening of this film is my favorite opening in the history of cinema ,not only does it tell a story in five minutes but it does it so beautifully ,tragically and you get a sense of what is to come. The soundtrack blends well and gives a sense of helpfulness and despair but hope all in one.
When Baby gets to the asylum Snyder masterfully gives us enough detail to set up this dark and haunting prison and when the film switches to sweet pea I knew he was trying to connect these two ladies together. Once the first fantasy kicks in I knew what to expect and I was right each object planned for the escape related to each beautiful fantasy sequence that showcased the bad ass girls each shining in their own
The vibrant dark colors made me question if this took place in the DC universe also because of baby doll's pigtails it could be a Harley Quinn spin off
gorgeous visuals, poignant story make this dream like film perfect!

However, I don't feel disillusioned with it because I've had very low expectations. The whole story revolves around a girl (we never know her real name but only a nickname, Baby Doll) who is hospitalized in an asylum after trying to protect her younger sister from a dangerous stepfather (responsible for their mother's death and eager to lay hands on their money). Unfortunately, the shot hits the sister and not the stepfather, who bribes the director of an asylum to lobotomize her, which would make her forget everything, nullifying her personality. From here, the film is lost as it enters a parallel universe, imagined by the girl in order to escape her own reality. The asylum ceases to be a madhouse to become into a clandestine brothel for very rich clients, and where she is forced to dance seductively. With each dance, however, she more deeply imagines surreal worlds of fighting, avoiding facing real life and feeding the dream of escaping.

Visually, the film is very good: high doses of good quality CGI, great cinematography with good framing and some very original camera shots, good sets, consistent and well-crafted costumes. But this isn't enough to make a good movie if we consider cinema's the art of telling a story through images, words and gestures. The script is the biggest flaw in the film: almost everything it shows is imagined inside the head of the main character, but the audience doesn't quite understand the reason that led her to such a mental escape. There is also no effort to articulate this with what happens to the character in real life. We are simply disassociated from reality, and this makes the film complicated to understand. Another problem is the lack of originality in the script, which randomly blends a huge range of influences, copied or reinvented from dozens of other films and series, such as "Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings", "Twillight Zone", "Charlie's Angels", "Kill Bill", "Naruto", "Dragon Ball" etc. And everything gets worse when we see theatrical and stylized fighting scenes, clearly inspired by Japanese anime. The way the movie tries to be sexy without getting it is also unpleasant. Emily Browning is the best actress that the film presents, and her character is the one that is properly developed, but she's far from what I would call a sexy woman, and a blonde wig (looks like a cosplay) and a short skirt aren't enough to change that. At that point, she loses to the supporting cast, who compensate some lack of talent with more curvaceous bodies. The soundtrack is good, as it's consistent with the film's retro and punk environment, appearing at the right times and knowing how to disappear when its not needed.

Fighting against the belief that women exist solely for the pleasure of men, Sucker Punch shows that its female characters happen to allow just exist for the pleasure of men. Though envisioned as a female empowerment film, Zack Snyder'sFighting against the belief that women exist solely for the pleasure of men, Sucker Punch shows that its female characters happen to allow just exist for the pleasure of men. Though envisioned as a female empowerment film, Zack Snyder's scantily clad women wind up living up to the sexist beliefs of its teenage boy target audience, never managing to escape the clutches of their low-cut tops and thigh-high socks. While the film misses the mark on the feminism and instead turns into an unfortunately sexist film itself, Sucker Punch does feature Snyder's trademark visual style and some incredibly fun action set pieces, but it is hardly enough to overcome Snyder's thematic failures in the director's chair and the bad characters.

With video game aesthetics aplenty, Snyder's films are always beautiful. Though I invariably hate the end product, Snyder's films have a comic book/video game look to them and he certainly embraces this in Sucker Punch. With great visual effects and eye candy cinematography, the film is simply gorgeous to look at. While the usage of slow motion in every action scene is far too much, he does still do a great job at capturing the look and feel of playing a video game and it benefits the film greatly. Using this aesthetic to create a light and fun atmosphere, Sucker Punch is a deathly serious film that had fun within the bounds of seriousness. Its action may appear over-the-top, but makes sense if it is a recreation of a comic book or video game. In this regard, the film is incredibly fun and exciting with Snyder having a knack for creating, at the very least, fun action set pieces. While his direction of the action is a bit muddled, the infectious fun is hard to deny.

Yet, the rest of the film is a struggle. With a Spotify playlist open going through a playlist Snyder likely entitled "Favorite Rock/Feminist Song Covers", the music is always distracting. It is easy to see Snyder's influence on 2016's Suicide Squad with the heavy use of music in this film. Though Snyder claims the music means a lot in the film due to Babydoll (Emily Browning) dancing to the music and being transferred to a dream world, we never see the dancing and only hear the annoying music. As such, it is hard to say that music means much in this film at all. Instead, it is merely the presence of it that signifies anything, which is replaceable and, ultimately, useless.

However, the film is ultimately about a feminist uprising against the patriarchy. Seems interesting on the surface, but Snyder's muddled approach renders it instead a tale about how women who fight must do so with the help of men because they cannot do it on their own. With the trapped girls enlisting a mystery man (Scott Glenn) to help them in various stages of their escape, they would have failed if it were not for him. He not only tells them what to get to escape, but helps Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) actually complete her escape. Thus, while women can fight and kick ass the same as men, they still need a man's help to complete the job. Moving onto the minimalist costume design, it is as if Sucker Punch had a limited wardrobe budget that Warner Bros. refused to increase. With women dressed in clothing that comes straight out a young teenage boy's sexual fantasies, Sucker Punch is more akin to a bad porno than a film. To Snyder, showing women kicking ass in skimpy clothing probably seemed empowering. I guess the sense that women would probably disagree with him, especially with the amount they are sexualized, objectified, and subjects to the "male gaze". Laura Mulvey would certainly have a field day with this one due to its usage of the male gaze, the way in which the women represent visual pleasure, and how they would fail within the help of men.

While well-intentioned, Snyder's film wreaks of a man trying to making a feminist picture and being unable to overcome his own prejudices in the process. Rather than sexualizing the characters, why can they not be dressed in a way that women actually dress? Why continuously highlight their legs and breasts every chance you get? Why make them prostitutes at one point? Why have them rely on a man to help them? This is not female empowerment. This is a man who is unaware that the patriarchy extends beyond his comprehension. This does lead into one of the film's greatest strengths, however: Oscar Isaac. Playing Blue Jones, the ruthless asylum/club owner, Isaac is brilliant. With his character essentially symbolizing the brutality and exploitative-nature of the patriarchy, Isaac is a menacing figure and shows that Snyder can understand his themes to some degree. He drops the ball when it comes to the women, but knows how to create a man who symbolizes the very essence of the bias and prejudice that continues to hold women back.

Here’s what you will need: a bunch of video-game platforms; DVDs of “Shutter Island,” “Kill Bill,” “Burlesque” and “Shrek”; some back issues of Maxim; a large bag of crystal meth; and around $100 million. Your imagination will take care of the rest.

Zack Snyder’s imagination is certainly feverish, though not exactly fertile. Mr. Snyder, whose previous live-action films are, in ascending order of quality, “300,” “Watchmen” and the 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead,” specializes in recombining pulp pop clichés into grotesque and bloated spectacles that show just enough visual bravura to be disappointing rather than merely awful. With “Sucker Punch,” his first movie not based on pre-existing material, he runs wild through the dank corridors of a gothic mental hospital, the velvety rooms of a high-end bordello and combat landscapes that evoke World War I, samurai epics and science-fiction futurism.

All of these might actually be the same place, as filtered through the mind of a young woman with enormous eyes and pouty lips who goes by the name Babydoll (Emily Browning). Confined to a creepy, windswept New England loony bin by her nasty stepfather in the wake of family tragedies, Babydoll slips through a series of mental trapdoors.

The hospital becomes a brothel, its imperious Polish chief psychologist (Carla Gugino) an imperious Polish madam and ballet instructor, and its sadistic head orderly (Oscar Isaac) a sadistic pimp named Blue Jones. Instructed to dance for clients — her virginity is being preserved for a half-mythic customer called the High Roller (Jon Hamm, who also plays a lobotomist) — Babydoll slips into a trance and passes, along with four of her fellow inmates, into a digitally rendered maelstrom of swordfights, aerial battles and big explosions.

The men who watch her performance back at the bawdy house also fall into a state of paralytic rapture. Viewers of the movie, denied (or perhaps spared) the sight of Ms. Browning’s gyrations, would be more apt to nod off if not for the incessant noise.

These interminable sequences of overscale mayhem are kinetic and elaborate but almost entirely lacking in tension, grace or visual wit. Babydoll and company leap around like video-game avatars, following the instructions of a crinkly faced guru played by Scott Glenn. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” did a much better job of interpolating game logic into film narrative, but even that movie — incomparably more inventive than this one at a fraction of the cost — could not quite overcome the inherent tediousness of watching someone else play.

The fantasy-action-dance scenes at least offer some respite from the pervasive ugliness of “Sucker Punch,” not only for Babydoll, but for the rest of us as well. Soon after her arrival she is befriended by Rocket (Jena Malone), whose sister, Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish, working hard and deserving better), has also been incarcerated. These three blondes are joined by the dark-haired and predictably expendable Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung) in plotting a daring escape from wherever they are. As they scheme and scream and suffer, the actresses go along with Mr. Snyder’s pretense that this fantasia of misogyny is really a feminist fable of empowerment.

It is not just that the women are attired in garish boudoir fashions, cropped schoolgirl uniforms and the latest action lingerie. With a touch of humor — with any at all — “Sucker Punch,” which Mr. Snyder wrote with Steve Shibuya, might have acknowledged the campy, kinky aspects of its premise. But even as it exploits, within the hypocritical constraints of the PG-13 rating, salacious images of exposed flesh and threatened innocence, the film also self-righteously traffics in moral outrage.

Every fan of the old Hollywood westerns knows that certain crimes — sexual violence against women, the killing of children — justify extreme acts of brutal vengeance. Mr. Snyder, in the manner of some slasher auteurs of the 1970s, reverses the equation. You watch as women are terrorized and preyed upon, pre-emptively excused from the nastier implications of voyeurism by the knowledge that comeuppance is on the horizon. And since that’s the case, why not sit back and enjoy the show?

But there is nothing here to enjoy, beyond the tiny satisfaction in noting that the movie lives up to its name.

After accidentally killing her little sister Baby Doll (Emily Browning) her evil step-dad (Gerard Plunkett) puts her into a mental institution where they force their patients into prostitution. Taught by the dance instructor Madam Gorski (Carlo Gugino) to retreat into her fantasies, Baby Doll is encouraged to a pursue a gift for a hypnotic dance, whisking her away to a series of war zones searching for 5 items that she needs to escape the institution and get away from the villainous caretaker of the institution Blue (played by Academy-Award winner Oscar Issac). Envisioning herself as a whore, she teams up with broken women alongside, Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), and Amber (Jamie Chung from "Dragonball: Evolution"), to escape before her time with the mysterious High Roller doctor (John Hamm) arrives. Personally woman shouldn't watch the film it represents them terribly, but I recommend the action scenes and if you love action films check this one out. The actors were serviceable, but their performances were great. Honestly the film shouldn't been rated PG-13. Grade A Expand

This is one of my favorite films what can I say? However it has it's flaws (like many other films) but a really enjoyable film to watch.

The soundtrack is ACE! and just the whole mood of the film is on point!

What I like about it are the deeper elements of the story, how some things (most of the film) aren't as obvious as everyone expects them to be. It's not so easy to understand the first time, and it makes you think about it after it ends. This is very well handled; and it's very cool how people can come out with a lot of different theories about why everything happened the way it did and how none of them are wrong.
Sadly, there are other not so pleasant things that come along with the film, like the mediocre-good acting, the unnecessarily accelerated character development, some exaggerated scenes, the fact that in the action sequences our character can't die or at least we don't worry about it, and the sometimes dumb script.
Still, it's a cool psychological action thriller that you are going to enjoy if you really try to understand it, and can make you think about it long after it's finished, as long as you allow it to do it.

I know my score seems high, but there is a reason to this.

And here goes.

What was the film aiming at achieving? A female-cast action flick heavy on sci fi and fantasy worlds the likes of video games. Did it achieve this? Yes, with flying colours.

The action was amazing. The cast was really nice. And the story behind it all was surprisingly for a film like this deeper than it even needed to be. Not a special out of this world crazy deep plot, but still deep enough.

The idea of "fighting your own demons within" is taken to a literal translation in this film and it is simply taken to another level. Whilst the ending speaks volumes about purpose, about helping others, justice perhaps, and what not.

Each of the fantasy worlds depicted are simply amazing. Yes, they are a cgi-fest. That is the point. Judging a film harshly for achieving what it set out to achieve is many levels of special.

We get steam punk nazi's, hot air balloons and robots, we get orcs and dragons, we get A.I robots in future worlds, we get giant samurai and add to that giant samurai with sub-machine guns. Did somebody miss the entire point to the visuals of what it was meant to be? Yes, for those whining about it, it was Zack Snyders chance to go crazy on his action-fetish. And we should be glad he had a film like this to do it.

The action is simply immaculate and deserves a 10/10. The man is a god of action films. The visuals and themes are simply stunning and deserve another 10/10. The story was also quite interesting to keep someone glued to the monitor and slowly connect with the characters, and it deserves a 6/10 maybe 7/10 at best. Audio was kick ass as well. Like one giant action-ride. Overall this film deserves that 9/10 and it hit the mark on what it set out to do.

Now, a comment on the naysayers.

1) Complaining about it being an action sh!t-fest? Really? That is no different from seeing a comedy and complaining it was a comedy. Or seeing a horror film and complaining it is a horror film, etc. That is special indeed.

2) Porn?! Seriously? So you saw some panties and female underwear and you all got so uncomfortable right? Hush hush kids, I know the female form is a little too much for you along with all kinds of celebration of it (which wasn't as sexualised as many make it out to be either to be honest but whatever) so perhaps you should grow up first or try to get in touch with being a little more sexually liberal. Enough with the **** when we see females in underwear. So what?! When you all see it in Anime its fine and cool. (This film was also taking a lot of hints from Anime as well, so it hit the mark even more with such visuals but hypocrisy is the norm nowadays I guess).

Stop bashing on a film that did exactly what it set out to do perfectly. You don't like action films, don't watch them, much less come here and make a review on them for crying out loud.

I am also noticing a trend these many years with Zack Snyder hate wagons. Extreme bashing on his action style. For your information, without Snyder we would have a stale action genre by comparison, not only his own films up the game in the genre on their own, but the influence they had on other action films also ups the game in the genre. But I forgot, you all want every director to be the same boring stale sh!t. Congratulations.

Sounds like a lot of jealousy towards a director that is doing things right. One of his films has better action than the Avengers ever had, but we all know where loyalties and fanboyisms align.

Lastly, I will have to assume that people are also racists. Why? Well because they can't not mention Snyder and bash his approach to adding or mixing Greek Mythology in his films. Another shred of jealousy I am assuming, since Greek Mythology is the coolest mythology around and you know this to be true. Search deep in your hearts, like it or not, you know it to be true. Getting angry about it and hating wont help at all.

The critics are especially the morons of this all. Take a look at the score distribution average of Zack Snyder with regards to the "pro" critics. 6 mediocre reviews and 1 bad review... Sad really. It is even sadder that they influence to some extent the people out there as well. It is obvious they have it out for Snyder and it is ridiculously funny.

The over-used and lame picking on his action-based directing is simply numb and void of logic. That is what he likes doing, that is what he is good at, that is what interests him, and that is what we get from him. Get over it and just enjoy the damn films for what they are. Jealous much?

Guillermo del Toro is all about horror/thriller. I don't see anyone complain about that though. Lame hypocrites.

Sucker-Punch is a must watch for people that like quality action. For those that don't like the genre it is no different than listening to a music you don't like. Simply turn it off. No one cares about your opinions.

It’s as if the filmmakers took a poll at Comic-Con of all the elements attendees seek in a movie—starlets in skimpy outfits adept at hand-to-hand combat; Nazi robot monsters; elaborate fantasy worlds; a wise mentor figure who adopts many forms; cabaret-style covers of New Wave hits; and why not throw in Don Draper while you’re at it?—then combined them all in the ultimate fanboy mash-up. Snyder has described it as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns,” but it’s more like The **** Dolls Present Steampunk Kill Bill, only more assaultive and pandering than that description suggests.

Emily Browning leads a cast of young actresses as a hard-luck orphan in some alternate universe 1950s where life would have to improve immeasurably just to qualify as Dickensian. A gauntlet of formative traumas lands Browning in a gothic mental hospital and then in a nightmarish cabaret/brothel. She regularly escapes the drudgery by entering into an elaborate fantasy world where she and her fellow kept/abused women do battle with Nazi mechanical men, dragons, and various other beasties with the sagacious counsel of shape-shifting mentor Scott Glenn.

CGI has made it so easy to create fantastical worlds out of computers and imagination that a film can offer a never-ending parade of eye-popping images and larger-than-life setpieces and still feel dull. Sucker Punch offers the same combination of overpowering style and nonexistent substance as Snyder’s earlier 300, along with a depressingly black-and-white worldview that splits humanity into vessels of pure good and exemplars of unspeakable evil. Only this time, Snyder is pandering to the Barely Legal demographic rather than trafficking in over-the-top homoeroticism. Browning has wildly expressive eyes and body language, but she turns wooden when delivering Snyder and Steve Shibuya’s alternately purple and stilted banter. Like the film, she seems to regard plot and dialogue as necessary evils. With its quests to retrieve magical totems, clearly demarcated levels, and non-stop action, Snyder’s clattering concoction sometimes feels less like a movie than an extended, elaborate trailer for its redundant videogame adaptation.

However, not everything is great though. The acting was wooden, I found the characters to be one dimensional, the story itself isn't all that captivating, and it does feel like that it goes on to more style rather than substance.

But overall, I thought it was okay.

First factor: It's a highly original film, there will never be anything like Sucker Punch. Second Factor, the plot is very complicated. Like Inception and Pulp Fiction, you have to see it twice or even thrice in order to fully dominate your knowledge of it, but this is also the reason why it's getting so mauled by critics. They seem to not like a complicated film nowadays. But I personally found it very captivating. Third Factor, the acting is the weakest point here. It is not bad but it isn't a powerhouse it could be. Fourth Factor, the visual effects and action sequences are top notch and high class constructed. It is badass. I am very disappointed this movie did not grab and Oscar nom for Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing and Mixing. It truly deserved it. And the Fifth Factor: THE SOUNDTRACK WAS BEAUTIFUL. HANDS DOWN, the BEST album of 2011! The movie overall came to a seven. It's great but could do better in some small aspects. Expand

This movie is amazing. Fantastic production, awe-inspiring special effects, interesting musical nature, and a creative, complex, layered plot.

I can only describe the movie experience as an abstract intellectual artistic masturbation.
It is just so abstract and artistic, yet intellectually complex with its layered storytelling style with juxtaposition.
I think most people don't really understand the movie completely; even myself (and I'm not saying this in a smug/pretentious manner), it really is hard to understand. (I'm still confused on some of it)

I originally thought that this movie is about escapism, but turns out, (after studying other's opinions of the movies) it's about its social commentary on the genre/industry/culture.

Honestly, this is one of the most unique movies I've seen; in the good way. The style/tone of the movie is awesome, the direction is superb, the music is great, the cast is amazing, the costume/props/CG is stunning, it has an interesting (and relevant) social commentary (on feminism, geek culture, etc.), and a plot that just challenges your imagination.
Sucker Punch is ridiculously underrated (due to misunderstanding of its nature/purpose/style), and deserves to be treated like the art film that it is. I may even go as far as to say that it deserves to be shown in film school, because it's just so artistic and unique.

My only complain is that it overestimates its audience, and didn't spell things out clearly enough for us stupids. (P.S. why is it rated PG-13 anyway?)

Also, if you follow the story of her trying to escape both the asylum and herself, its REALLY good. The story is very deep, once you understand that the girls are shown that way to depict that they're abused and want freedom., and, once again, the main character is schizophrenic. The movie itself is very dark, and I don't recommend it for anyone under 15. Over all, very, very good movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although well executed in some aspects on most counts Sucker Punch is a failure. The first 30 minutes where masterfully done. It set the stage well and was done in a unique and artistic style. But unfortunately the story gets very muddled and confusing. The dance/fight sequences seem unnecessary and are derivative of other movies. One resembling The Matrix, and another being like Lord of the Rings with guns. Until the end all the action sequences and story telling styles seem to be ripped off of other films. At the end the film seems to strike a sense of artistic genus however in the combination of Babydoll's (the main character) take on reality and the fact that she is in the end getting a lobotomy in true reality. However the middle of the film is such a disaster that the beginning and end cannot make up for the train-wreck that it amounts to. That said Both Browning and especially Oscar Issac should be applauded for the ways that they preformed in their respective roles. Expand

SUCKER PUNCH is a visual knock-outBaby Doll imagines an elaborate fantasy world in which she plans her escape from a corrupt mental facility after being institutionalized by her abusive stepfather in Zack Snyder's SUCKER PUNCH from 2011. SUCKER PUNCH is a visual knock-out with mind-blowing special effects and non-stop action that will leave you breathless! Snyder has assembled the perfect cast for this exploitation/fantasy cross-over that take the otherwise empty characters and blow them up into larger-than-life super-heroes. SUCKER PUNCH pushes teen fetishism to the edge with its ultra-sexy heroines that are armed to the teeth with swords and guns, taking on everything from dragons to samurai warriors, undead Nazi soldiers, and futuristic androids in their skimpy schoolgirl outfits. It is so easy to become entranced by the cute girls, stunning fantasy worlds, and huge explosions that minor things like plot and character hardly seem to matter. I was not prepared for the overwhelming atrocity that I had to bear during the course of its running time. By the movie's end, I felt that my senses had been pummeled to dust.

The plot, if that's what you call it, is this: A grieving girl who has just lost her mother has been framed by her stepfather for murder, and is now imprisoned in a mental institution. A lobotomy awaits her. So, in the meantime, she creates a fantasy world of her own. Within that fantasy world, she creates another fantasy world, That's twice the fantasy. It's kinda like "Inception", only stupid.

The girl's fantasy actually belongs to Zack Snyder, writer and director. One of his most popular films is "300", a movie where its heroes wage war wearing nothing but a cape and their underwear, so the enemy could marvel at the sight of their abs, and get distracted. In "Sucker Punch", five young women charge into battles with their short skirts and high heels. In the fantasy world, the second one, the girls are against kamikaze robot bombers, blazing angry dragons, giant samurais, and, of course, a few hundred steam-powered Nazi zombies. Movies by Zack Snyder aren't about what's rational or comprehensible. Reaching its truest form in "Sucker Punch", Snyder makes movies to share with the world, his imagination, which was the vomit I was talking about earlier.

Surprisingly awesome! I originally had no desire to see this film, but I'm glad I did. Stunning action sequences, beautiful cinematography, perfect soundtrack....Sucker Punch is the most fun I have had at the theater in a while.

I loved the concept. The reality vs. action scenes were unique and kept me interested the whole time. The cinematography was absolutely stunning; it's definitely one of the best things about the film. The action/fighting scenes were unbelievable! The first major action sequence is as thrilling as the average movie climax. Just when you think the action can't get any more intense, the next scene arrives and delivers again. The thing I liked about the action was that none of the scenes were alike. So many films contain battle sequences that are basically identical, but Sucker Punch contains multiple scenes, all intense for different reasons.

Overall, the acting is only okay, as I expected, but there were a few performances that really surprised me. Jena Malone gives a great great performance as Rocket. She steals every scene she's in...too bad she had very little substance to work with. Abbie Cornish also gives a good performance. In the beginning I wasn't impressed, but towards the second half of the film she really delivers. Oscar Isaac though gives the best performance as the villain, Blue.

I completely disagree with the critics on this one, I'm not quite sure what they were looking for when they were watching this. This film is receiving a lot of criticism that it doesn't deserve. Personally, I found the film to be intriguing, intense, and completely original. I loved it! Check this film out, I recommend it to everyone.

So convoluted and dull that it resorts to telling its plot through a music video. The impressive images and soundtrack keep this from being a total disaster.

Just to give the film a bad review, I made my way to the movie theater expecting to be disturbed by this but WOW. I couldn't believe I was such a jerk of expecting something so ridiculously insane. 'Sucker Punch' is clearly bad reviewed by critics because they expect TOO much, here you can interpret the story in many, many ways...that's what is called an Open-Mind nowadays, which is something the 90.9% of the critics don't have. The acting was prudently well executed, the story had its few misunderstandings but was very interesting, the girls were very amazing (how they were) but there are three key terms of why users love this movie: the visual effects, the music and the battle sequences (in my opinion, of course). The visuals were truly Oscar-Worthy and I'm not exaggerating a bit, the music was quite long and industrially weird but simply, a blissful treat of sound mixing to the ears and the battles..Oh My, the battles were intense, pretty darn dark, rigorous, extremely constant, video-game styled and at the border-of-your-seat entertaining, so much going on you get caught inside the combat scene in less than a minute, like it happened to me. Definetly, a must-see film you wouldn't want to miss, trust me! But please do me a great favor and ignore the critics on this one. Expand

This movie is just an epic disaster that could have been a career ender for Snyder if he hadn't had the presence of mind of securing Man of Steel prior to Sucker Punch. The first 30 min of the film just leaves you thinking 'WTF's going on?' and unless you are devoid of any intelligence and just blindly accept what is put in front of you then you'll struggle to get into it. The characters lack any kind of depth (they're not even that hot either), the action sequences are those which you know lack any kind of consequence, and the ending is just woefully lackluster and poor. I can see what sort of audience may like this film - it's kind of like listening to Motorhead......real dumb and just something which appeases people who are happy just with a form of entertainment which ticks all the boxes in a checklist of what they want, but for those of you out there who operate on a higher level than dumb middle-class American airhead look elsewhere for your thrills. Do the changes really matter? Actually, yes they do. The extended cut shows where Zack Snyder was really intending to go with the movie. It also adds another layer of depth to the characters, adding more sense to Babydoll's lobotomy and other major plot points. I'm not saying the original was a bat movie at all, it was incredibly enjoyable, but it lacked the "sucker punch" of emotion and revelation the audience was expecting. If you have a chance, watch the extended cut. You won't regret it. Best movie of 2011. Expand

Enter sucker punch,a well written, visual masterpiece that combines reality & fantasy that's getting unfairly criticized imo. It starts with the protagonist(Emily Browning) babygirl at her mother's death bed in which she soon dies. Their step dad was obviously whoring his self because he wanted the inheritance money but he was pissed it went to babygirl & her sister but he(I'm assuming)tries to kill babygirl & her sister but babygirl accidentally shoots & kills her little sister by mistake and gets sent to an all girl mental hospital. This is where the movie just shines as she have a series of fantasies based on her struggle to free herself from the hospital! Now surprisingly this is where people express what makes the movie fail....but how? She's living a total nightmare of a life where her mom died, her step dad is a lying sneaky bastard(which is why he's a priest in her fantasy) her sister's dead because of her mistake and she's in a mental hospital scheduled for vegetation in 5 days.....so yeah I think I'd make up a world of my own to. The music in sucker punch fits well and the acting was great. The fight scenes were beautifully done my favorite scene was the train fight against the robots..very well done fight scene. This movie represents a young's struggle for personal freedom while incorporating a woman's struggle of what they should look l8ke and how they behave(oddly though their scantily clad th

They are going to be the future of badly directed action films. This movie is boring. The characters are one dimensional, none have a personality worth liking or hating, the acting is sub par, the concept of the story and it's gimmick is interesting but the director pulled it off poorly. Visually the movie is pleasant to look at, especially the girls, but it's gimmick is a cheap one and the story is written with the gimmick in mind and neither the story or the gimmick work well together or independent of each other. The action sequences are merely okay with more lows than highs. The director also can't make up his mind on what he wants the film to be. Sometimes it takes itself too seriously, other times not seriously enough. All in all this movie should have been better than it was but instead of being something fun and enjoyable what you end up is a rather decently looking mess of a film. Expand

It doesn't work at all. The movie keeps jumping back and forth from a realistic drama to completely unrealistic fantasy sequences (which are extremely longer than they have any business being mind you) that it gives me a headache trying to comprehend what is going on. The fantasy scenes are metaphors for dancing and the passion and determination of the characters, that I understand but unfortunately they are pointless and add nothing worthwhile to the to the story regarding story depth or character development. The fantasy scenes are such obnoxious special effect fests that make me lose track of the actual story and killed my interest completely in the movie. The music is passable at best, not good but not bad either. The trailer showed mostly the fantasy scenes which are not important or even relevant to the main story of the movie at all, talk about being on the very edge of the borderline of false advertising. >_> It baffles me to no end how anyone who designed and organized the scenes in the movie though it was a good idea, cut out all the pointless fantasy crap and unnecessary bloated special effects budget and promote the movie as the serious realistic drama it was intended to be in the main storyline and it could have been somewhat decent. What an absolute abomination of film making, 20 dollars form my wallet and 120 minutes of my life wasted, steer well away from this garbage. Minus 1 for false advertising in trailer, minus 1 for obnoxious and annoying special effects, minus 1 for pointless fantasy scenes as filler, minus 1 for too frequent transitions between story and fantasy, minus 1 for hard to follow story (due to fantasy scenes), minus 1 for lack of story depth, minus 1 for lack of character development in both main story and fantasy scenes, minus 1 for poor story and script writing overall. Final score: 2/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh dear, what a great piece of escapist feelgood film making this could have been. Loved the style, bullet time, music, etc. The story and characterisation let it down badly however. The story-within-a-story premise is overly confusing and doesn't work very well. It detracts from the overall experience. Films with girls in high heels fighting nazi corpses whilst driving mechs should not try to be too clever with their audience. The story was overall too bleak, with too many needless deaths (why did the two girls in the gang have to get executed?) and an unsatisfying conclusion (heroine is a vegetable and we don't see the villain get anything like a suitable comeuppance). Ultimately this film made one big mistake - why should the audience even care what happens when half the story takes place in someone's imagination? Expand

Babydoll (played by Emily Browning) is sent to a mental institution for teenage girls and visages her escape from her captors through a series of fantastical quests. Although clearly inspired by Kill Bill, Inception and a host of modern day video games, credit has to be given to Snyder for the film's creative context but unfortunately that's about all it can be given for.

The fantasy within a fantasy concept does allow Snyder license to create some stunning looking fantasy backdrops and action sequences ranging from fighting giant samurai in feudal Japan to mechanical Nazi soldiers in a WWII bunker. The action sequences are visually stunning as you would expect from the director that delivered 300 and Watchmen and renowned for his graphic novel and video game style imagery. Although why a teenage girl would choose to invent such fantasy situations to serve as replications of the quests undertaken, except for the obvious reason of serving up gun-totting chick action for the likely audience, is unclear.

The all-action girl heroes attempt to complete a series of simplistic quests, dubbed 'the plan' and actually just involving obtaining several objects, to escape from their prison. Perhaps Snyder felt that the fantasy within a fantasy premise was as much as his target audience could handle, especially with all the teenage girls running around, and dumbed down 'the plan' to the point of having Babydoll write it down as a reference for the audience to understand the progress achieved. The quests are completed and ticked off, for the audiences benefit, with tedious repetition.

Snyder breaks the stereotype of the female role in action films and it is refreshing to see a team of girls manning machine guns, flying helicopters and fighting dragons, however the film is conflicted in its attempts to portray a spirit of female empowerment, which is relevant, when the female characters breaking out from their male oppressors are a group of nubile teenage girls scantily clad in school uniforms.

The fantasy within a fantasy premise and impressive visuals are not enough to cover the hollow and humourless characters and abysmal script. The rush of deaths in the film's final act feel too contrived as if Snyder realised with 10 minutes to go that some quick emotion was required in order to set up an attempt at a profound ending. The narrated dialogue over the final scenes is hard to appreciate after the previous ninety minutes which really did nothing more than serve up the literal definition of a teenage nerds wet dream. Imagine if MTV remade Inception crossed with Kill Bill for the video game generation and avoid.

This film is *certainly* deserving of FAR better than the 33 metacritic score.

This is one of those films that I wish I had seen in the theatre because having it on DVD allows for pausing in order to lesson the emotional burden that this film builds. This is a VERY dark story which the comic book stylistic elements allow to be told in a more palatable form. Sadly it is those elements which both make the film into what it is, but have resulted in the film being subject to derision since while the film visually suggests it is one-thing, it is actually something deeper and nastier. Yet it is that veneer which is an essential element of the story hence any criticism shows a lack of understanding as to the intent. Come at this with an open mind and an appreciation of a range of genres and it is a gem.

Sucker Punch is a movie with vibrant details, exquisite surroundings and a twisted and confusing storyline that's very unique.
The acting in the story is to be expected by such raw and young actresses, though they weren't horrible.
The plot itself was very unique, better than a bland ordinary every-day movie. Though it's not meant for a mainstream audience. The movie itself has twists and is a movie that probably didn't appeal to the mass-crowd unlike the creator expected. It really needs the audience to actually concentate on the movie. It's definetly non-appealing to the mass-crowd.
The movie itself was very good, with nail-biting action shots until it went downhill in the ending.
Overall it's a good movie, nothing spectacular soo it's a 7/10.

This movie is not a pineapple pastry that you can easily sink your teeth into. You must have a very abstract, hyper-thoughtful, and eccentric type of mind to understand Zack Snyder's works. Lots of people complain about not being able to relate to the characters in this movie. But they fail to see that the director is not interested in telling them a good story here. He has a certain idea, and being a champion of the visual element, presents it in a manner that is both exhilarating and satisfying to all and sundry. This movie is a graphical extravaganza, meant to depict a thought from Snyder's mental depths. If you expect to be a part of the story, prepare to be disappointed. Consider it your misfortune if you are unable to enjoy this movie. You don't have the taste for it...yet. Expand

Given the lingerie inspired army suits and the cutesy names of the characters, I would say it was targeted more at a male audience than to be an inspiring female power movie. However, on a whole, the movie entities merged together perfectly. It was crazy, no doubt about that and the alternate reality to dream world thing can leave a lot of people going, 'what...?'. Believe me, if you didn't get The Matrix you'd have a hard time getting this show as well. However, the movie itself was VERY well put together. I like to think that the main parts of a movie, the acting, the script, the score, the costumes, the set, the sound mixing, needs to all blend together to create the mood of the film. Many times I've watched a movie and loved the script but the costumes were off and didn't fit the period they were in or were just not realistic looking, Eragon left me feeling like that. At other times the concept of the show was well thought out, but the score was lacking. I believe the soundtrack of a movie should make you relive the whole movie over in your mind when you listen to it. One excellent example of that is the soundtrack for the movie How To Train Your Dragon. From start to finish just by listening to the tracks and the sequencing that they were placed in made me feel like I was watching the movie all over again. SuckerPunch had that! Every aspect of the movie was in tune with the other to create the mood that the director wanted to bring out of the movie. And for that I give it a 10. I especially liked the scores, the remixed version of Queen's We Will rock You and Bjork's Army of Me. Classic. As for the story line, the motivational aspect didn't add up with the sexy army ladies for some reason with me. What the hell, they can't kick ass, and kick ass they did, in normal army clothes. I know it was a direct representation of how the girls saw themselves, reflecting their own personalities in the dream world or rather how Baby saw them but at the end of the day, we know it was all the directors decision, he could have very well put them in different army wear but he choose to have them not only kick ass but show some ass as well. That aside, I think the concept was good, the sound mixing and editing was excellent! Definitely have me for one of the best sound track's for the year! And it was NOT just entertainment. A person who's seriously paying attention can come away with the message but unfortunately it had enough fluff to obscure the films true intent for viewers who are just looking for entertainment. For the actors, Oscar Issac plays evil sooo well, I DIDN"T KNOW HE COULD SING! My best performance went to Abbie Cornish who also happens to play my favourite character overall. No I'm not being biased, Baby Doll was also one of my favourites and Blondie gets best fighting costume from me. Hope I didn't spoil anything for anyone and despite my discrepancies, I still give the movie a 10 as I didn't see these discrepancies as being so off that it warranted a lower mark. http://criticsmaylie.wordpress.com Expand

I really find it surprising that so many people like this movie. It really was a chore to watch this.

None of the characters are interesting. They don't have any specific characteristics and those who do are not likable. They are all 1-dimensional at best. The acting was really bad too. These are fairly good actors but they all suck in this movie, especially Carla Gugino as Dr. Gorski, who speaks with this unbelievably corny Polish accent. The only performance that was actually okay was John Hamm at the end.

Even the action, one of the highlights of this movie, is not even that good. I liked the dragon sequence, but everything else was badly choreographed and unbelievably long. That scene in the trenches literally lasted for 9 minutes and I was completely bored. With films like The Musketeer, while everything about it is terrible, the thing that keeps me from hating it is the action. But it wasn't just random sword fighting. That film had some of the most creative action scenes that I have ever seen in any film. Of course, it was not enough for me to see it as a good film, but it kept me from hating it.

The fantasy scenes were creative but they make no sense in the context of the story. This takes place in the 1950s. Why does it look like I'm watching a live action anime? And I don't understand what all of the stuff in the film is supposed to represent. I know people will say, "oh, but the time period doesn't matter." If that's the case, then why not just put the story in the 21st century? Why move it to te 50s if you're not going to bother to make it look like the 50s?

In terms of the feminist aspect, there are very mixed views about it. Some say that it is sexist because of the outfits that the girls where. I don't see that. Yes, they are revealing but they aren't being sexually exploited. There are not close ups of the girls' cleavage or butt. Others say that it is empowering to females. I don't see that either. What? A girl can sort of kick butt - in her head, mind you - and all of a sudden she's a good role model? No, she's not. She needs to be a good character first and foremost, and none of these girls are developed.

Really, none of this would be a big issue where it not for the film trying to be dark and gritty. If Zack Snyder was content with just making a fun, dumb film with lots of action and no real story, I might not see it as a masterpiece but I'd respect it more. Here, it thinks it's saying something about women fighting for their freedom and it doesn't work. Again, there is the issue of the time period. What is the point of setting it in the 50s when there is nothing to suggest that it takes place in the 50s

I think a lot of people who like this film like it for two reasons. One, the action. While I don't particularly care for it as much as everyone else, I can see why everyone else would like it. Two, the concept. In theory, this seems like an interesting film. A girl who is imprisoned escapes to a fantasy world where she envisions herself as a powerful person. But it's not about how good a concept is. It's about execution and the execution of this plot is, quite frankly, bad. And don't try to tell me that this is some brilliant, pro-feminist film because that's not what I see, but I don't see it as some exploitation film either. You want a pro-feminist movie? Go find a Hayao Miyazaki film.

I can understand the appeal with the likable actors, big action scenes, and "pro-feminist" qualities. But don't try to convince me that this film is good, because I do not see the genius, if any.

Question: Is Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch"
(a) An exploitative epic in which young, submissive women are unable to kill a man but are able to erotically dance for his pleasure?
(b) A feministic call-to-arms exploring the virtues of erotic capital in a world where all men are evil except the old ones with no sex drive who drive buses?
(c) A comic-book nerd-fantasy of dragons, undead soldiers and hot girls in tight skirts?
(d) A video game in which the audience is played like chumps for cash?
(e) A dreadful overuse of budget, showing that something can be amazingly pretty but still completely boring?

That's right. The answer is (f) A complete pile of steaming dog turd.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this movie, and the music is great. Unfortunately, the action is boring and the plot really takes a downward turn later in the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Perhaps not to everyone's taste but I do not believe this film deserves, on an artistic level, the negative criticism it has received. The slick photography is original and the direction is sound, the music is suited and consistent, albeit non-traditional in a harmonic and motif sense. The narrative structure is far from dry - the departure from conventional perspectives is refreshing. Although the plot is simple, it questions the difference between main characters and character foil by the exposition of Sweet Pea as more than just a deuteragonist. The story is ultimately a reflection of Baby Doll's mentality, and thus creates the entire structure of the film based on what Zack Snyder wanted to portray about her character. Although a snapshot of a character's mentality may not be the most dynamic of storylines, it is by no means a lesser narrative. By imagining a story as a whole concept, Zack Snyder presents an intriguing and imaginative motion picture, worthy of more praise than it has received. Expand
