Critics (the public) are so quick to judge. This movie did what it promised. A trip through a dark reality depicted with a good taste of original style. Snyder knows how to create a powerful opening scene. The man uses slow motion. So what? he does it well. As for the acting? It was appropriate. It didn't need Oscar performances. And for the soundtrack? Very fitting, and very well chosen. This movie was not hard to grasp. I pity those who were confused. And if you're asking yourself "where were the characters?" They were stuck in between the realms of the different realities. Funny, that's where he wanted the audience to be. If you didn't become engaged with this movie then go back home and watch the Social Network... Expand

I witnessed an older couple walk out of the film after the first action scene and realized they must have been offended by the imagery and seemingly stereotypical content. I usually don't read reviews, but I had done so before with inception when I wasn't sure if the spinning top was about to topple or continuing.. I read a wonderful review that explained older actors were used in the end and it indeed wobbled for the first time. I was extremely disappointed to find there wasn't one decent review out there that didn't tear this film apart. Critics, I have come to conclude, don't have the balls to SEE what this film is really about, because A) They are feminist offended by the visuals and scenes, or B) they are afraid of other feminists coming after them. The rendition of where is my mind in the beginning is pure genius. If you have seen Fight Club its a foreshadowing that this girl has truly lost her mind, which accounts for her wanting, the lobotomy at the end. From that point on, I knew to expect this girl would enter a subreality, as was the outcome of fight club, and similar to it, she fought where she was empowered in her sub-sub reality despite all outside oppression. I was left to realize this girl must have been left so afraid and intrusting of men, after the horrors of her step-father, that she fantasized herself in a brothel,as this is shat she had come to expect of men, and possibly the way in which the men of this all girls ward, abused and exploited these "sick" girls whom nobody would believe. The only reason I I researched the film to begin with was because I was unsure if babydoll killed her sister or if her stepfather had. I don't know if the director left it open for interpretation becarhe felt it was irrelevant, but there is a scene where baby doll admits she has done something she deeply regrets but I doubt she'd regret shooting a man that killed her sister. Another hing, some critic reviews bash the use of the names. First of all, the entire film is a fresh of breath air to a morbid reality that could have been and has been in the real world, its a form of comic relief and mental escape to an other rise sinister reality. Contrary to the critic's beliefs, babydoll is not her real name, they are their stage names of the sub reality. Come on guys. Expand

But I had an urge to support this film by giving it a positive score, as I think it deserves it, even if it's seen as a meaningless piece of entertainment.

I think a lot of people have missed the plot in more than one way. I think there are layers of symbolism that the critics have totally missed or do not understand and therefore simply see it as a rambling sequence of one action packed, effects showcase after another. The whole concept is an escape from reality, therefore to try and pigeon hole it in to some kind of reality, so it makes sense to you as a critic is simply going against the flow of the film and just not accepting it for what it is.

Loved it and always will, it goes down in my list of all time favourites.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A horrible muddle of somewhat good intentions, let us start by rating it from good to bad. Visual effects - 9. Nicely done, although a hiring qualification for modern visual directors should be to take them outside and make them stare up at that bright yellow orb in the sky. If they can properly name it as 'The Sun' then they're hired. I bet half or more flunk, including this film's director. Acting - 5. Now, it's not to say they had much scripting, but their green screen talents are much in evidence, and I'd even give bonus points if they did any of their own stunts. Costume - 4. Someone call Sailor Moon and tell her her costumes were stolen, just after you get done with the inventory of all the missing costumes for Showgirls. Soundtrack - 3. Ok, unearthing the Airplane and White Rabbit is kitchy but ok. It was rock & roll, after all, and they do just amp it up (but their cover singer is no Grace Slick, I'll tell you that, right out). But, after we hear the panoply from The Eurythmics to The Beatles and back it seems more like a transparent attempt to craft the next hipster soundtrack CD a la Pulp Fiction. Script - ... what script? Oh, you mean the video game storyboards that passed for a script? Really, it's eye candy, but I wondered at how the test marketing worked. Was this really aimed at the 14 year old GRRRL Power crowd? If so, it misses badly with a script that is more like a recycled version of the musical Chicago meets Pan's Labyrinth. To their credit, and maybe to keep their PG rating, there is little human bloodshed. But, man do the japaname space hun nazi robot zombies get it with both barrels (and a katana). As I told my viewing companions, once in a generation there is a movie better understood after splitting a lid of weed. This would make this film the newest 2001: A Space Odyssey. Heavy, man.â Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is interesting that as of April 2nd, the user reviews have about 3 times as many favorable as unfavorable reviews, while the critics numbers are just the reverse. Seems the reviewers are out of touch or perhaps they have had their sensibilities dulled by watching too many bad movies until they can't recognize a gem in the rough when they see it. Because so many people, particularly critics, seem clueless about what this film is trying to say, let me spell it out. I'll stop short of spoiling the ending, but I'll lay out a good deal of plot along the way. I recommend those who have not seen the film yet to stop reading reviews and just see it and judge for yourself.

The movie states its message in the opening few shots. You can watch the first six minutes at this link (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/6185190/exclusive_six_minutes_of_sucker_punch/) and hear the details. It is a poetic description of the power and role of guardian angels, which are just mythological embodiments of our innermost selves. "Everyone has an angel, a guardian who watches over us. We can't know what form they'll take: One day old man. Next day, little girl. But don't let appearances fool you. They can be as fierce as any dragon. Yet they're not here to fight our battles, but to whisper from our heart, reminding us it is us, it's everyone of us who holds the power over the worlds we create."

Simple and direct. As we are being told this, the we see images that show a young woman lose her mother and then be set upon by her step-father. She tries to defend her young sister from his advances, but accidently kills her. He talks to the police and takes her to a nearby asylum for the criminally insane and while she is being processed, she overhears an orderly telling her step-father that he's arranged a doctor to give her a lobotomy in five days in exchange for $2,000.

We also learn that the main therapist, Dr. Gorski, uses drama to help the girls there to gain some level of control by playing music and having them act out what they are feeling. There are shots of the young woman working and looking for a way out. Then we see her on a couch in the doctor's office, being told she is in control of the worlds she creates in her mind.

Suddenly, we see her about to receive the lobotomy, but then the scene shifts and we are watching a dramatization of a lobotomy on stage. Baby Doll, as she is called, is in a different place with the same people, a high class brothel and night club run by the orderly. The girls are his prostitutes being held there against their will. She is told she must learn a dance to please the customers. The doctor, now a dance instructor and madam, tells her, "Your fight for survival starts right now. .... You have all the weapons you need. Now fight." Baby Doll next finds herself at a Zen temple with a wise man who actually gives her weapons and tells her the same thing. After defeating 3 monstrous warriors, she demonstrates she is ready to fight. (This sequence is awesome and powerful.)

Many people seem to think this is a fantasy she creates to cope with her situation, but it becomes clear at the end that the events we see in this alternate reality have corresponding events taking place in the asylum. She is working on her plan to escape.

She gets four other women to agree to help her get the things they will use to escape while she, Baby Doll, dances to distract the men. It doesn't take Freud to understand that "dancing" is a euphemism for sex or some other sexual distraction. Each time she "dances," the movie shows a fight scene of high fantasy where the five are fighting inhuman soldiers, dragons, and robots. They are fighting for their survival and the action dramatizes what is at stake if they fail. Some see this only as titillation for fanboy masturbation, but they are using their sexuality against their oppressors, so it stands to reason that they embody what the men fantasize about.

I won't say more, but this should give you enough to see past all the bull that critics are slinging at this film and allow it to be judged on its own merits. I think it is an attempt at contemporary mythology, using imagery from video games and the bad old days of the 1950s when women were seen only as housewives and whores. That they can fight against this system and gain a victory of sorts ought to be uplifting and empowering. The movie repeats its message at the end, that each of us holds the power to change our situations, provided we are willing to fight.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last we saw of Janie she was standing at the gates of her palatial estate where a sympathetic detective draped a blanket over her shoulders and led the tearful girl away to an nearby patrol car. Directed by David Fincher, short-form music video for Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun" told the story of a girl's revenge against her incestuous father with great economy and a surprising amount of sensitivity. In the end, the father got his just desserts: "a bullet in his brain". Steven Tyler, of all people, found himself standing on solid moral ground. Unlike Janie, in "Sucker Punch", Baby Doll(Emily Browning) fails in her attempt to deliver a "last IOU", when she accidentally guns down her younger sister instead of the stepfather who was about to rape the barely pubescent girl in the closet. Sent to a mental institution, Baby Doll reimagines the hospital facilities as a bordello, run by an impresario known as Blue(Oskar Issac) and a Polish dance instructor named Vera(Carla Gugino), where she and the other femme inmates dance in provocative outfits for men. To escape the humiliation of being objectified, Baby Doll slips into a dream state, but the diversionary scenarios in which she and the other girls make like bad-ass action stars occur in masturbatory landscapes that are wholly male constructions, fanboy-imagined designs. It's **** not female empowerment, when the women discharge their firearms. They're sex objects, not heroes. Baby Doll knows what boys like: fire-breathing dragons, Japanese robots, and steampunk zombie Nazis. The Lennox Institute for the Mentally Insane could have been anything: a circus, a lawyer's firm, a newspaper company, but Baby Doll was molested(or worse) by her stepfather, so it's not surprising that she sees herself as a prostitute working in a whorehouse, since many women who make their living in the sex industry are reported to have been abused as children. "Where is My Mind?", featured prominently in Fincher's "Fight Club", solidifies the "Janie's Got a Gun" connection, since a cover version(sung by Browning herself, backed by Yoav) of the Pixies classic plays over the soundtrack in "Sucker Punch" while the doctor prepares Baby Doll for a lobotomy procedure. If the filmmaker was serious about feminism, he would have included a dreamy interlude where the abused young woman exacts some vigilante justice on her sleazy stepdad. It's infuriating how the father gets to keep all of Baby Doll's inheritance money. At the very least, she could have dispatched Sweet Pea(Abbie Cornish) to do her bidding. Quite appropriately, when Sweet Pea boards the bus during the film's final scene, the Wise Man(Scott Glenn), the man who was guiding our protagonist, is behind the wheel. In "Sucker Punch", the sisters aren't doing it for themselves. They're kicking ass for the sexual gratification of teenaged boys. It's a man who is driving this bus, a man who pays feminism mere lip service as an excuse to remake "Showgirls" without any gratuitous pelvic gyrations and moneymaker shaking(the film cuts away each time to a dream sequence, therefore preserving its PG-13 rating). Where's Steven Tyler, noted humanitarian, when you need him? Expand

I see absolutely no flaw in this movie. I was never bored while watching this, which I can't say for the majority of movies I have seen in my life, including some of my favorites. The cutaway dream sequences were awesome to watch and made the movie better as a whole. The plot was solid and engaging. The only problem I have is not with the movie, but it's reviews. I suppose critics are just so jaded that when something good actually good comes out, but seems demeaning to women or something, it must be taken down. I've read the comment that this movie has good graphics but a bad story many times and all I can think is "What do you think Avatar is?". At least Sucker Punch is like nothing else that has ever been in theaters. Though I do have to admit to the fact that this movie does target a select audience, specifically young people. The movie basically revolves around the interests of 13-30 year olds. So I suppose people who don't fall in to that category might not see eye to eye with what this movie has to offer. To those people I say, don't watch it. If you didn't want to see a movie with scantily-clad women killing things, don't watch that movie. All in all, this is an opinion, like any review, so I will finish by saying that it is a great movie, as long as it pertains to your interests. Otherwise, don't watch it. P.S. I know I said that this review is my opinion, but I thought it should be known that it is a fact that it is my opinion, so in a way, it is fact (this comment is also targeted to the same audience as Sucker Punch) Expand

The fantasy sequences do get a bit repetitive at first, but your expectations are soon subverted. The storyline seems a bit weak, even if you take the time to understand it. But I'll still give it a 7 because I really enjoyed the movie, all told.

Although, the story is out of place that there's no explanation about the story that it didn't tell anything about the movie from the beginning to the end, it's really downsize of the entire movie that falls down of the silly scenes that keeps going and wondering what the story is really about. But at the time, it's almost good to the bad film and that's okay that it brings the girls into action and Synder is trying hard for the movie, it really brings the intention to a clever movie. You know what, this movie wasn't made to win picture of the year. It's an action movie. And it's a really fun action movie at that. It's got a pretty good storyline, loads of fun action, and hot girls jumping around, killin' folks with guns, swords and knee-high boots. But it's more than just that.

This movie is action movie fun in it's purist form. Forget your worries from all the negative reviews, and just go see. You'll be glad you did.

The theme is that women are useless in the real world and can succeed only in fantasy. All the positive reviews hype the action, the visuals, the nerd references. Sucker Punch had fast pace action, good Plot, but at times was very confusing. The film was very emotional when it didn't need to be. Emily browning was pretty good in this film. Sucker was action packed but also very sad and dramatic.

This is quite likely the mostIf you have a compulsion for soft-core porn, only happen to find yourself in the theater instead, or care to share company with easily confused people (by dialogue, for example), then this one is for you. This is quite likely the most horrific train wreck of a film I have ever seen in a theater, especially considering the talent of the director and the expectation of being entertained walking into the viewing. I could not supplant the thought of just how a film like this could make its way upon the screen. The plot was piss poor, the characterization was god awful, and the acting forced me into a decision of whether or not to hurl my giant soda at the screen (I have never had this compulsion so vividly before; it still angers me to consider the money that I spent that fateful evening). It is exactly what everyone would be watching if the concept behind "Idiocracy" became a reality: the mainstream media becomes the only artistic license in the world, all creative vision falls away, and special effects performs a total coup d' etat on substance. In other words, to quote Hunter S. Thompson, it is "what the whole hip world would be doing Saturday nights if the Nazis won the war (to paraphrase)." I am fully aware that this movie will nonetheless do quite well financially. However, Snyder should be ashamed of himself. Although his cinematography and effects can be quite masterful, I would be ashamed to call this a screenplay. Even in those intervals while witnessing some bullets whistling through the air in slow motion in the midst of some I Robot initiated fury, I could not answer why this was happening, how these scene selections were valid in any way, or what the $%*&@# point was (to be blunt). I never lost sight of the fact that I was in a movie theater, and that the movie would never shift into anything meaningful or even interesting. You can dress up a pile of feces, but it is still just that. Even if many are distracted by the glitter. Expand

Among these factors was the pummeling the film took from critics including would-be luminary AO Scott.

Well Mr Scott , it's time to retire.
The music has apparently gotten too loud and you want those pesky kids to just turn it down.
"Suckerpunch" is a huge success - it advances the language of film , and it's essential integration into the experience of music and video games, in a way that is dazzlingly effective.
I can think of no recent film (with the possible exception of "Inception') that has, and needed to, rock the boat with such rewarding vigor as Snyder's felicitous little masterpiece.

Scotts ire with the film seems to betray a deeper disgruntlement with the way movies are going rather than a specific critique with Suckerpunch (after all, advising a viewer, as Scott does, to inhale a bag of crystal meth to have a similar experience as watching the film is not only non-specific to his perception of the movies "problems", it also sounds like a damn fun idea).
No, what bothers old Mr Scott in apartment 3A is that it's all gotten too fast and too loud for his fragile , aging bones to handle.
Well, tough.
What Suckerpunch does is not easily defined, which is why perhaps, so many critics , like Mr Scott (he's not alone in his AARP sponsored rant) are failing to define it.
Suckerpunch lives up to its title - you don't see it coming - ever. Snyder's ability and determination to break the frame and the rules with it results in an experience you simply have no reference for, except perhaps from your dreams, and for that alone this film deserves to be seen.
But that's not all, not by a long way. The visuals, the "look" and feel of the film seem somehow to directly inject a buzz of adrenaline into whatever normally inaccessible (to movies) part of the brain that controls heart rate, erection, stimulation and delight. That's not to say Suckerpunch is for men only - perhaps even AO Scott can recall a time when women also liked to be stimulated.

In politics they say that when the going gets tough , people flock to the center. Well, sadly they're being lead by conservatives like An Old Mr Scott who, scared, alone in their apartments at night, listening to the rats and the plumbing, want the company of those they once held critical sway over. I'm reminded of that chilling performance moment from Lee J Cobb in Sidney Lumets "12 Angry Men" : having realized that , all along , he's been frustrated with his own son and not the kid on trial , on whom he wants to exact revenge, he pulls out the picture of his child from his wallet and rips it to pieces screaming : " Damn kids! You spend your life....".

Then he trails off into a tearful silence.
Follow suit please Mr Scott.

You have 5 beautiful & kickass characters, taking control of their fate. The message of the movie which was basically only you can control your fate, & you have the weapons, so fight for it, was simple yet the way it's presented was fantastic, each world was well designed. And whoever who thought the plot was 'overly simple', well your brain is the one that's simple, it was intruiging & kept me thinking, even after the movie, I was still mindf***ed! I'm watching it again this weekend, the movie was awesome, it keeps me wanting more. The music was great as well, fitted each scene perfectly, you can't compare it to any movie, its definitely way more complicated then Inception, I have to say. Everyone go see it, it was totally worth my $9. The only thing I didn't quite like was the length, which was too short, it could use some character development, so I could understand each character better, it could have been longer, but still it was fantastic, just a minor flaw, so definitely a 10/10! I LOVED IT, IT WAS AWESOME, it was good to finally see some originality in a movie, even though how everyone thought the concept was simple, no one could have done it better then Zack Snyder, this definitely goes into my list of favourite movies of all time! Most entertaining & intruiging movie this year! Expand

The film's fight sequences don't hold up with the main story most times, and neither does the soundtrack a couple of times, but I didn't care one bit. I'm saw the Rotten Tomatoes score and set my standards low for watching this, and I enjoyed the film for what it was: hot chicks jumping around fighting in skimpy clothing, explosions, dragons, gunfights, sword fights, and blimps exploding. Some of the actors are good, like Emily Browning, Jamie Cheung, Abbie Cornish, and the guy who plays the stepfather, but some are pretty campy, like Vanessa Hudgens (as Blondie, a brunette whose name is Blondie), and Oscar Issacs. One stands out as the worst, which is Carla Gugino as Dr. Gorski, who's supposed to be playing a Polish doctor, but her accent waivers from Germany (Ja?) (or to gamers, probably Wakkan, ja?) to Russian (aCCcentuate the "CCCCCC" sound with plenty of phlegm) instead. And the dialogue is so stock and so lame that it makes Tommy Wisseau look like Charlie Kaufman. The action scenes, while extremely well done, come out of nowhere, even inside an already existing fantasy (she imagines sword fighting and gun fighting while on a stage at a brothel dancing while on a stage in the mental institution dancing [and no, that's not a typo]), and lack any logic to the point of total anachronism (helicopters in medieval times, samurais with huge guns in feudal Japan, and zombies in Nazi-Germany, girls in the 50s imagining using 21st century M-16s, MP-5s, and high tech mechas with a jet pack and an internal computer-powered aiming system during WWII, and trying to destroy high-tech bombs on a 20th century monorail), and most times have little to no attachment to the storyline (what the hell does fighting a dragon have to do with stealing a lighter, or dismantling a bomb have to do with stealing a knife, or even Japanese wise men have to do with go-go dancing?). The characters most times are irrational. For example, Babydoll clearly hears that Blue will forge Dr. Gorski's signature to get her lobotomized. She never takes into consideration telling Dr. Gorski, the only person who can allow lobotomies and is against the procedure, to cancel it and have Blue arrested, nor does Dr. Gorski call the police when Blue shoots two of the patients. Also, the message, suspense, and emotion are lost in translation, because Snyder refused to give anyone else any detailed exposition as much as Babydoll, instead of giving everyone ample exposition so that it can be anyone's story, and have its dramatic twist work. There is no way to soften up or sugar-coat the fact that this movie truly sucks, but it's just simply eye candy. Take it or leave it. Is it one of the greatest? PFFFT-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, NO!! Is it one of the best of the year? PFFFT-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, NO!! Is it an entertaining movie for those with the mindset of a guy who wants to see hot girls in glorious action sequences and nothing else? Completely. Expand

I am disappointed the score meter doesn't allow for negative numbers. Given the option, I would have rated it -2.

This movie was mediocrity wrapped in badness then deep-fried in boiling failure.

About an hour before I went to see Sucker Punch I watched the preview which was my first introduction to the movie. Sucker Punch delivered everything it promised in the preview, lots of stylish action catered to a fan-boy's sensibilities. I especially enjoyed the soundtrack which fit with the movie really well. Certainly not a masterpiece of writing or acting but it was pure fun to watch. My biggest complaint would be that we didn't get enough character development considering it was an ensemble cast. What else could a guy want in an action movie? The movie could also be watchable for girls considering that this movie is all about girls kicking but and taking names. None of that damsel in distress stuff. The visuals and audio were top notch. The story was fairly well thought out and the ending made me feel sad. With that, there definitely ARE some plot twists in this movie that will make you ask "why did this have to be like this?" This movie is definitely for both male and female audiences. Then the ending comes ... the ending was not well-made , or maybe was , but the tension that is build throughout the film it's not resolved , it is amplified by the endless suffering that is smashed upon the Babydoll character. When watching the film you will create a bond between you and the hot girls, beautiful and sexy to death , then all this is throwed in your face in the end. It's just a bunch of visuals thrown together with a razor thin plot that doesn't make much sense, wrapped in a "come see these hot women" wrapper. Borderline exploitative. You'd think I'd be interested in such nonsense, loving video games and being male, but no. I am fully capable of "checking my brain at the door" for movies, but this one pushed well beyond that prerequisite. I will say this, however: I have NEVER seen so many people get up and leave a movie before it was over. Ever. Long before the credits rolled, more than half of the people had LEFT. The story is boring and simple. The "cool" parts (which, lets be honest, is why we saw the movie in the first place) are so far removed from the plot that you really have to look for the connection. They were like Family Guy jokes.

Snyder tries soo hard to be epic and give you testosterone goosebumps that he forgets to have a sense of humor or irony and that's where Sucker Punch falls flattest for me. I thought about the movie Scott Pilgrim through the whole thing. Whatever your views on Pilgrim, you can't argue that that movie did not take itsself seriously and had fun. Sucker Punch does not. Snyder force feeds the "cool" visuals down your throat and wants you to believe it and not question it and that leaves it with no soul whatsoever. Yeah, cool you killed a dragon and the epic orchestra music queued right as it's lifeless head hit the ground. Anymore cliche's you can throw my way?

Another aggravating part that is tied to the seriousness is how the movie tries to have a message, a message about life, and angels, and some other **** that didn't really have anything to do with the story. That's the thing, it's just tacked on. Eh, I just don't care to write anymore about it. The only positive thing I have to say about it is that the soundtrack was pretty damn good. I was surprised to hear Bjork, and the Pixies, Beatles, and Stooges covers were very interesting.

But all in all Sucker Punch is a failure of what I hope was just an experiment for Snyder. I know he's got a masterpiece in him somewhere, but this is far from it.

As I like to say, he creates action art, his film may not be outstanding when it comes to story telling, but the man knows how to Direct. Sucker Punch is an absolute fun time, and is probably one of the most enjoyable films of the year, unless you're an uptight snobby critic who only enjoys films like 'The Kings Speech'. It has it's moments where I would think to myself, "I'm not sure if that worked" but it didn't happen enough for me to have anything bad to say about this film. There is no reason I wont be seeing this film at least 3 more times in theaters. The acting is fantastic, the story is a bit off key, but the Directing is why I'm giving this a 10 out of 10. There are a few things that could be picked apart, and I don't have a grudge against anyone thinking so. That being said, there are FAR too many reviews (both user reviews and critics) trashing this film for no apparent reason other than saying it was "garbage," etc. If you have nothing at all positive to say about this film, you've either jumped on the "trashing SUCKER PUNCH" bandwagon, or you're more mindless than you think the film is!... No film deserves a 0/10, let alone this one!!!

Now, onto my own critique...

THE GOOD:
- First and foremost, I thought the CGI visuals were completely masterful!
- The cinematography could rival 300's any day of the week.
- The fight choreography was very well-done.
- The soundtrack fit the film like a glove
- The actresses sold their action roles extremely well... You really do believe these girls trained as hard as they did for their roles!

THE QUESTIONABLE:
- Although some people have said some (or all) of the acting wasn't very good, I disagree!... Sure, there are times where the not-so-perfect dialogue masks the acting portrayed, but I wouldn't have assumed otherwise, and nor should you! The acting was better (overall) than this sort of film usually lends itself to.
- The story, overall, is the main thing that seems to set off most people... Whereas the film's story should have been more evolved and extended, it's also not exactly what's intended to be the film's main focus point, either. The trying-to-be-deep nature of the plot does fall a bit flat (mainly due to the length of time in the film we actually get a sense for a deep story), but I get what Zack Snyder was trying to do, and I think he pulled it off pretty well.
- I'm surprised to see how many people didn't get the real world, fantasy world, and action/fantasy world elements to the film... The fantasy world is nothing more than a coping mechanism for Baby Doll's depressing situation, and the action/fantasy world is a thought-induced representation of her expression through "dance."

In the end, a couple things to take note of that have hurt this film (to some) is 1: the MPAA enforcing a PG-13 rating, which caused the unfortunate cutting of 18 minutes (which includes scenes and moments that many people wanted!) which will be on the Director's Cut version, and a trailer that captured a lot of attention from people that wouldn't fit into the semi-niche market the film is for.

In the end, I feel Snyder did a good job that really only bigger fans will truly appreciate.
... I give it 7-7.5/10, but I liked it about 8.5/10.

Thanks a lot for reading,
Mike Sorge

After the long wait has come to the cinema what promises to be one of the best films this year, for over a year we know of its existence but it was only 5 months ago that the advertising campaign began to get acquainted.

First of all I would like to clarify a point and that you as readers deserve the full and not only the prejudices of the server that review, I say this because, well because after reading several "reviews" saw only the prejudices of the "experts" on film saying the film was based purely on the special effects which is totally false and that there be no doubt uphold my point.

Sucker Punch puts us in the history of Babydoll (Emily Browning), a young woman who after losing her mother is hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital by her stepfather (Gerard Plunkett), the place is under the control of Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Gugino), a psychologist who tries to help the young and the head of stretcher Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac) who does the dirty on psychiatric treatment.

There he meets Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) who are also "orphan"and convinces them to find a way out, of course the girls are afraid to be discovered but after analyzing the circumstances in which they are and that their situation is not truly called to live decide helping Babydoll.

To get your free 5 things should get a map, fire, a knife, a wrench and something unknown, while getting everything the viewer is transported to different dimensions of reality as a brothel, a Medieval fortress, a Shinto temple, a Bullet train and even a battle of the Second World War.

Not delve much into history and it would take the joke going to the movies, but I can assure you that the story is deeper than it appears you can see, a council is to observe the small details as these give us clues of how it could finish the story.

There are many symbols and some of its meaning is implied by the connotation that we give to the first, take nothing for granted this would be a mistake as there are times when it seems that the narrative is rather short but if you look at previous scenes will all is there (later I will explain why this happens), Zack Snyder is hard to tell his story so that forced us to examine part of what happens or they say the characters.

The battles are the best ever seen, then applied the phrase "Not because you are a woman I will have compassion" in comparison to other films where it looks for female characters are "hard" Sucker Punch takes it to another level making the players are really confident during the battle and that the blows that tips them look real, which many appreciate.

One thing to note is that the sequences are professionals, I mean, actresses had to train for 3 months - 8 hours per day in order to achieve the sequences as the director wanted, they suggested not only make the style "pretend as I hit you "but really learn how to perform the movements and how to use weapons, something that I personally see it as an extra in the film.

The set design is very good, as I said before the film transports us to different dimensions and of course each has very specific features from climate to architecture, all these dimensions we also offer a particular story as we have seen in the animated shorts are not only locations where the heroes fight each of these worlds has a story behind it.

Attire is "subtle" but very appropriate to emphasize that decade the main story is set in addition to the girls'dressing rooms to please even the most demanding and the girls will give you some ideas.

Music is a good point in the movie because they look a little more scenes and helps to "highlight" certain points in history, especially when Babydoll was concentrated to enter their worlds.

The flaw I see him, in my opinion, is the issue because there are parts in the sequences where you can see a few seconds to cut scenes but nothing to reduce the experience of this is that to get the PG -13 had to cut 18 minutes of film as well as 3 scenes (including a love scene of Emily Browning) complete the film because he was rated R, as a consolation actresses have confirmed that contain Blu-ray plus the extended version a surprise.

Photography in the film is also important because the plans which show the actresses are very very good and this also affects other aspect is the makeup that is quite appropriate to highlight the features of the actresses and actors support.

To complete the film's central message is something that we often overlook in life, the last sentences of the film give us a lesson or are we becoming more clear what we already know, besides showing us one of the best sides the human being. I think this part is that they forgot all the "experts"in their reviews and wanted to be "professional" and criticize just to criticize without analyzing the context.

One of my recommendations for this weekend whether or not action movie lovers.

I have enjoyed most of Snyder's previous films, especially Watchman, and I knew from the trailer, the potential that this movie had. Zack has always seemed, to me, like the perfect director for bringing all of the style and panache that we have come to love from our favorite Comic, Anime, and Video Game franchises, to the big screen. I was very excited about this movie, because it represented the next step forward in legitimizing this over the top style that has seemed uniquely present in the pages of our comics, and the CGI sequences of our favorite games. As I watched this movie it was everything that I hoped that it would be and more. I was fairly content with the idea that the story would be secondary in my mind, to the face value of bringing the true spirit of neo-fantasy to a cinematic experience. Unlike many of you who watched this movie, I was pleasantly surprised by the story and the more I contemplated the various levels, and abstract concepts, the more impressed I was with this vehicle. One of the great aspects to this movie is that Snyder essentially turns our imagination upside down by presenting to us the fantasy and all the while forcing us to imagine reality. The imaginative lengths that Baby goes to in order to conceive of and envision what it will take for her and her friends to survive, where inspiring. The central theme of empowerment through imagination seems to be lost to the very critics who fail to tap into their own imaginations. If this movie suffers, it is only because the normative standard of movie making require that Snyderâ Expand

It was great fun, and definitely worth the couple of dollars you pay for the ride. Expand

Sucker Punch sets the premise of Babydoll (Emily Browning) who is sent to an insane asylum due to her wicked stepfather who wants her taken care of in any means necessary (a lobotomy) to inherit the estate from the will of his deceased wife and other daughter. Having set the dark and gritty atmosphere at start and throughout the film within the asylum remained consistent. Having Babydoll enter the asylum she is quickly introduced to the owners and captors known as Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm). She also meets various inmates such as Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung), and Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish). Babydoll who is new to people and surroundings is left feeling scared and is shown to portray the keep to yourself characteristic. That is until she bravely saves Rocket from the cook who angrily traps her in a corner by intercepting them and holding a knife to his throat, Rocket shows her trust and loyalty to Babydoll by recalling this particular incident to the other inmates profusely during the movie. It is revealed early in the movie that Babydoll and the inmates are kept there to perform dance routines for the Blue and High Roller through a series or provocative dances. At first, Babydoll is reluctant to do anything in the dance area with her friends and the instructor (Madam Gorski) but because she wants to escape the place, she fades reality with an imaginary fantasy world which contain samurais, nazi zombies, dragons, and robot-like guards on board a train with a bomb. She eventually learns from The Wise Man (Scott Glenn) she needs five specific items in order to be set free from the place/captors and with the help of her friends she grew fond of, they aid her in the task. My impression of this movie was it did held my interest from start to finish through plot, characters, and the action sequences. These three key elements came together solidly well. During the fantasy world sequences, the music played part in adding intensity between the girls fighting the monsters. Acting sufficed, but what truly shined was the fantasy worlds and action sequences with its beauty and simplicity. What was interesting to know of was that this film was directed by Zack Snyder, who also directed Watchmen and 300. Felt the fighting scenes within the fantasy realms was directed in a way which captivated myself as an audience member. To conclude, I felt this movie definitely was worth the money and I eagerly await the DVD. Expand

It doesn't make any sense. SP had a very good storyline, beautiful visuals, breathtaking action scenes and a wonderful cast. The story really impressed me. It was very well done and creative, unlike most movies nowadays. The fight scenes were PERFECT, I mean, you couldn't get better action sequences for all the money in the world. Overall, Sucker Punch is a great movie! I know I'll be seeing it again real soon. Expand

The story could have been much better. I wonder if this is the result of the studio trying to draw in the younger generation so they had to pull some good stuff to get the PG-13 rating?? Or simply the story was never meant to be good and the CGI was the mass appeal. Not so much for me. I could hardly make it through the movie. Rent this if you are thinking about seeing this movie! This movie has everything that a guy wants from a movie. A story that you don't need to understand. Slice n Shoot action, and hot women to bounce around while they kill everything in sight. ROCK ON!!!

It's trying to be a serious movie with a serious plot, and it fails. It tries to give the characters depth, and fails. It tries to make the action visceral and pull the viewer into it, but the awful pacing, lack of tension and being PG-13 kill it. It's people we don't care about killing endless waves of mooks we don't care about, and I know the trailer makes you believe otherwise, but it gets really boring. If you want to see an over-the-top visual candy shop of a movie, watch The Fifth Element or Tron Legacy. Expand

Sucker Punch...sucked. A vapid and empty slow-mo-CGI crap-fest with an oh-so-thin outer shell consisting of a prosaic premise and pseudo-allegorical "quest story" that serves as nothing more than a vehicle for Zach Snyder's geek-fetish porn. Unless you really, really like slow-mo. Then Snyder's your guy and this your movie. The "action" sequences certainly have action in them. Too bad they lack any drama or entertainment. Perhaps if Snyder had started the film in one of the "unreal" environments - outside of Baby Doll's head - it may have created more excitement, intrigue, tension...anything. Unfortunately, they are simply very expensive fantasy/sci-fi set pieces, ways for Snyder to put everything swirling around in his head on the screen, story, characterization and thematic relevance be damned. Don't be fooled, this is not a "empowered feminist" type of film. I don't think exploiting all the cliches of violence and degradation of women with "young" women half-clothed throughout the entirety of the film and then saying "See, they 'win' in the end!" counts. Terribly, terribly disappointing. Expand

Story isn't that great but if you like action movies or anything action at all, this movie is worth it. The fighting alone rivals the matrix, but the story wont leave you wanting to own it
