This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. why? is the question i ask myself when i read all of the negative reviews on this film. sure it is not the greatest movie ever made, but it is not deserving of two out of five stars. the story is one you have to think and follow, which is probably why most people got mad : because they just wanted to go see a movie with hot babes and action, they didn't want to think. The story tells a great tale of self sacrifice for the greater good, and it does so by adding intense fight scenes and and a great musical score, the direction was great. Absolutely loved it, Snider finally found his titanic. Expand

I enjoyed this movie. My friend told him that his friends thought that the movie had no/poor story, so I went it just expecting a 'leave your brain at door' action-fest.
The story is pretty straightforward and simple...I guess some folks just found the narrative approach confusing (I did hear people leaving the theatre stating that they didn't understand the story or the events). In any case, I liked the story and the resolution.
I liked the few action sequences and even the music. The anachronism (in the music and the elements, like gear and weapons, in the battles) was quite amusing. IMHO, it was a good movie as a whole.
I'd recommend it to anyone who's into videogames, anime, RPGs, and tabletop stuff like Warhammer, as there are definitely 'nods' in that direction.
And @Bartisajoke: those weren't zombie Nazis...there weren't any Nazis in WW I (to which the trench warfare scene alluded to).

Although must say I can understand why not everybody is gonna feel the same way. These kind of movies are targeted at a very specific kind of audience. Since me and my friends are game-fanatics in our late twenties and see all the references to this culture we appreciate this kind of movies very much. But even if you don't and your just open minded enough you will enjoy this just as we did. You could compare this movie to one of the most famous story's in history. Alice in wonderland. In that, a lot doesn't make sense but the world she falls in is just amazingly and surprisingly fantastic. As it should be in any fantasy. Expand

I have enjoyed most of Snyder's previous films, especially Watchman, and I knew from the trailer, the potential that this movie had. Zack has always seemed, to me, like the perfect director for bringing all of the style and panache that we have come to love from our favorite Comic, Anime, and Video Game franchises, to the big screen. I was very excited about this movie, because it represented the next step forward in legitimizing this over the top style that has seemed uniquely present in the pages of our comics, and the CGI sequences of our favorite games. As I watched this movie it was everything that I hoped that it would be and more. I was fairly content with the idea that the story would be secondary in my mind, to the face value of bringing the true spirit of neo-fantasy to a cinematic experience. Unlike many of you who watched this movie, I was pleasantly surprised by the story and the more I contemplated the various levels, and abstract concepts, the more impressed I was with this vehicle. One of the great aspects to this movie is that Snyder essentially turns our imagination upside down by presenting to us the fantasy and all the while forcing us to imagine reality. The imaginative lengths that Baby goes to in order to conceive of and envision what it will take for her and her friends to survive, where inspiring. The central theme of empowerment through imagination seems to be lost to the very critics who fail to tap into their own imaginations. If this movie suffers, it is only because the normative standard of movie making require that Snyderâ Expand

After the long wait has come to the cinema what promises to be one of the best films this year, for over a year we know of its existence but it was only 5 months ago that the advertising campaign began to get acquainted.

First of all I would like to clarify a point and that you as readers deserve the full and not only the prejudices of the server that review, I say this because, well because after reading several "reviews" saw only the prejudices of the "experts" on film saying the film was based purely on the special effects which is totally false and that there be no doubt uphold my point.

Sucker Punch puts us in the history of Babydoll (Emily Browning), a young woman who after losing her mother is hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital by her stepfather (Gerard Plunkett), the place is under the control of Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Gugino), a psychologist who tries to help the young and the head of stretcher Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac) who does the dirty on psychiatric treatment.

There he meets Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) who are also "orphan"and convinces them to find a way out, of course the girls are afraid to be discovered but after analyzing the circumstances in which they are and that their situation is not truly called to live decide helping Babydoll.

To get your free 5 things should get a map, fire, a knife, a wrench and something unknown, while getting everything the viewer is transported to different dimensions of reality as a brothel, a Medieval fortress, a Shinto temple, a Bullet train and even a battle of the Second World War.

Not delve much into history and it would take the joke going to the movies, but I can assure you that the story is deeper than it appears you can see, a council is to observe the small details as these give us clues of how it could finish the story.

There are many symbols and some of its meaning is implied by the connotation that we give to the first, take nothing for granted this would be a mistake as there are times when it seems that the narrative is rather short but if you look at previous scenes will all is there (later I will explain why this happens), Zack Snyder is hard to tell his story so that forced us to examine part of what happens or they say the characters.

The battles are the best ever seen, then applied the phrase "Not because you are a woman I will have compassion" in comparison to other films where it looks for female characters are "hard" Sucker Punch takes it to another level making the players are really confident during the battle and that the blows that tips them look real, which many appreciate.

One thing to note is that the sequences are professionals, I mean, actresses had to train for 3 months - 8 hours per day in order to achieve the sequences as the director wanted, they suggested not only make the style "pretend as I hit you "but really learn how to perform the movements and how to use weapons, something that I personally see it as an extra in the film.

The set design is very good, as I said before the film transports us to different dimensions and of course each has very specific features from climate to architecture, all these dimensions we also offer a particular story as we have seen in the animated shorts are not only locations where the heroes fight each of these worlds has a story behind it.

Attire is "subtle" but very appropriate to emphasize that decade the main story is set in addition to the girls'dressing rooms to please even the most demanding and the girls will give you some ideas.

Music is a good point in the movie because they look a little more scenes and helps to "highlight" certain points in history, especially when Babydoll was concentrated to enter their worlds.

The flaw I see him, in my opinion, is the issue because there are parts in the sequences where you can see a few seconds to cut scenes but nothing to reduce the experience of this is that to get the PG -13 had to cut 18 minutes of film as well as 3 scenes (including a love scene of Emily Browning) complete the film because he was rated R, as a consolation actresses have confirmed that contain Blu-ray plus the extended version a surprise.

Photography in the film is also important because the plans which show the actresses are very very good and this also affects other aspect is the makeup that is quite appropriate to highlight the features of the actresses and actors support.

To complete the film's central message is something that we often overlook in life, the last sentences of the film give us a lesson or are we becoming more clear what we already know, besides showing us one of the best sides the human being. I think this part is that they forgot all the "experts"in their reviews and wanted to be "professional" and criticize just to criticize without analyzing the context.

One of my recommendations for this weekend whether or not action movie lovers.

As I like to say, he creates action art, his film may not be outstanding when it comes to story telling, but the man knows how to Direct. Sucker Punch is an absolute fun time, and is probably one of the most enjoyable films of the year, unless you're an uptight snobby critic who only enjoys films like 'The Kings Speech'. It has it's moments where I would think to myself, "I'm not sure if that worked" but it didn't happen enough for me to have anything bad to say about this film. There is no reason I wont be seeing this film at least 3 more times in theaters. The acting is fantastic, the story is a bit off key, but the Directing is why I'm giving this a 10 out of 10. The history fits perfectly here, the delusions of a young girl that are presented metaphorically by a side of magic , a different world where the actions resemble to what's happening in real. Then the ending comes ... the ending was not well-made , or maybe was , but the tension that is build throughout the film it's not resolved , it is amplified by the endless suffering that is smashed upon the Babydoll character. When watching the film you will create a bond between you and the hot girls, beautiful and sexy to death , then all this is throwed in your face in the end. That's my only complaint , despite that, this film is perfect. Expand

Critics (the public) are so quick to judge. This movie did what it promised. A trip through a dark reality depicted with a good taste of original style. Snyder knows how to create a powerful opening scene. The man uses slow motion. So what? he does it well. As for the acting? It was appropriate. It didn't need Oscar performances. And for the soundtrack? Very fitting, and very well chosen. This movie was not hard to grasp. I pity those who were confused. And if you're asking yourself "where were the characters?" They were stuck in between the realms of the different realities. Funny, that's where he wanted the audience to be. I saw this movie on DVD so I had already seen the terrible reviews and knew how awful it was supposed to be. I think I was hoping for a sort of Plan 9 From Outer Space with real special effects. I was surprised by how much I liked the film. While I can see why people say the movie is misogynistic, I don't think it is at all, or rather it is only superficially so. Yes, the girls in it are victimized, yes the costuming is straight from Victoria's Secret, but if you look behind that, at what the film says about the characters you see something very different. Baby Doll (a supremely ironic name for someone as tough as she) is in a terrible situation. She is locked away in an asylum with a timetable for lobotomy, most people would curl up into a mewling, whining ball n her place (I know I would;. Baby Doll does, not, almost before the key turns in the lock behind her she is plotting escape. From the opening seconds she is overmatched and outgunned. Yet, throughout, in her fantasy world and more importantly in real life she never gives up, ultimately engaging in an act of self-sacrifice. She wears a skimpy skirt, that's the outside, inside she is consistently brave, loyal, resourceful and resilieant. At the beginning of the film she has an opportunity to kill her hated stepfather. She doesn't take it, an act that hints at the real strength of her character. This is not a movie by a man who hates women, but by a man who loves and admires women in a man's sort of way.

If this film were made without dragons, or zombies or robots, if the reality scenes were expanded to fill it, it would be an arts movie and the critics would have LOVED it. But, the literal monsters share the screen with the human monsters. I think that because this is a movie that has a lot more to it then first meets the eye, because of it's strong female characters, because of the monsters, and yes because of the costumes, this movie will be around long after most arts films are forgotten.

Enter sucker punch,a well written, visual masterpiece that combines reality & fantasy that's getting unfairly criticized imo. It starts with the protagonist(Emily Browning) babygirl at her mother's death bed in which she soon dies. Their step dad was obviously whoring his self because he wanted the inheritance money but he was pissed it went to babygirl & her sister but he(I'm assuming)tries to kill babygirl & her sister but babygirl accidentally shoots & kills her little sister by mistake and gets sent to an all girl mental hospital. This is where the movie just shines as she have a series of fantasies based on her struggle to free herself from the hospital! Now surprisingly this is where people express what makes the movie fail....but how? She's living a total nightmare of a life where her mom died, her step dad is a lying sneaky bastard(which is why he's a priest in her fantasy) her sister's dead because of her mistake and she's in a mental hospital scheduled for vegetation in 5 days.....so yeah I think I'd make up a world of my own to. The music in sucker punch fits well and the acting was great. The fight scenes were beautifully done my favorite scene was the train fight against the robots..very well done fight scene. This movie represents a young's struggle for personal freedom while incorporating a woman's struggle of what they should look l8ke and how they behave(oddly though their scantily clad th

Just to give the film a bad review, I made my way to the movie theater expecting to be disturbed by this but WOW. I couldn't believe I was such a jerk of expecting something so ridiculously insane. 'Sucker Punch' is clearly bad reviewed by critics because they expect TOO much, here you can interpret the story in many, many ways...that's what is called an Open-Mind nowadays, which is something the 90.9% of the critics don't have. The acting was prudently well executed, the story had its few misunderstandings but was very interesting, the girls were very amazing (how they were) but there are three key terms of why users love this movie: the visual effects, the music and the battle sequences (in my opinion, of course). The visuals were truly Oscar-Worthy and I'm not exaggerating a bit, the music was quite long and industrially weird but simply, a blissful treat of sound mixing to the ears and the battles..Oh My, the battles were intense, pretty darn dark, rigorous, extremely constant, video-game styled and at the border-of-your-seat entertaining, so much going on you get caught inside the combat scene in less than a minute, like it happened to me. Definetly, a must-see film you wouldn't want to miss, trust me! But please do me a great favor and ignore the critics on this one. Expand

I know my score seems high, but there is a reason to this.

And here goes.

What was the film aiming at achieving? A female-cast action flick heavy on sci fi and fantasy worlds the likes of video games. Did it achieve this? Yes, with flying colours.

The action was amazing. The cast was really nice. And the story behind it all was surprisingly for a film like this deeper than it even needed to be. Not a special out of this world crazy deep plot, but still deep enough.

The idea of "fighting your own demons within" is taken to a literal translation in this film and it is simply taken to another level. Whilst the ending speaks volumes about purpose, about helping others, justice perhaps, and what not.

Each of the fantasy worlds depicted are simply amazing. Yes, they are a cgi-fest. That is the point. Judging a film harshly for achieving what it set out to achieve is many levels of special.

We get steam punk nazi's, hot air balloons and robots, we get orcs and dragons, we get A.I robots in future worlds, we get giant samurai and add to that giant samurai with sub-machine guns. Did somebody miss the entire point to the visuals of what it was meant to be? Yes, for those whining about it, it was Zack Snyders chance to go crazy on his action-fetish. And we should be glad he had a film like this to do it.

The action is simply immaculate and deserves a 10/10. The man is a god of action films. The visuals and themes are simply stunning and deserve another 10/10. The story was also quite interesting to keep someone glued to the monitor and slowly connect with the characters, and it deserves a 6/10 maybe 7/10 at best. Audio was kick ass as well. Like one giant action-ride. Overall this film deserves that 9/10 and it hit the mark on what it set out to do.

Now, a comment on the naysayers.

1) Complaining about it being an action sh!t-fest? Really? That is no different from seeing a comedy and complaining it was a comedy. Or seeing a horror film and complaining it is a horror film, etc. That is special indeed.

2) Porn?! Seriously? So you saw some panties and female underwear and you all got so uncomfortable right? Hush hush kids, I know the female form is a little too much for you along with all kinds of celebration of it (which wasn't as sexualised as many make it out to be either to be honest but whatever) so perhaps you should grow up first or try to get in touch with being a little more sexually liberal. Enough with the **** when we see females in underwear. So what?! When you all see it in Anime its fine and cool. (This film was also taking a lot of hints from Anime as well, so it hit the mark even more with such visuals but hypocrisy is the norm nowadays I guess).

Stop bashing on a film that did exactly what it set out to do perfectly. You don't like action films, don't watch them, much less come here and make a review on them for crying out loud.

I am also noticing a trend these many years with Zack Snyder hate wagons. Extreme bashing on his action style. For your information, without Snyder we would have a stale action genre by comparison, not only his own films up the game in the genre on their own, but the influence they had on other action films also ups the game in the genre. But I forgot, you all want every director to be the same boring stale sh!t. Congratulations.

Sounds like a lot of jealousy towards a director that is doing things right. One of his films has better action than the Avengers ever had, but we all know where loyalties and fanboyisms align.

Lastly, I will have to assume that people are also racists. Why? Well because they can't not mention Snyder and bash his approach to adding or mixing Greek Mythology in his films. Another shred of jealousy I am assuming, since Greek Mythology is the coolest mythology around and you know this to be true. Search deep in your hearts, like it or not, you know it to be true. Getting angry about it and hating wont help at all.

The critics are especially the morons of this all. Take a look at the score distribution average of Zack Snyder with regards to the "pro" critics. 6 mediocre reviews and 1 bad review... Sad really. It is even sadder that they influence to some extent the people out there as well. It is obvious they have it out for Snyder and it is ridiculously funny.

The over-used and lame picking on his action-based directing is simply numb and void of logic. That is what he likes doing, that is what he is good at, that is what interests him, and that is what we get from him. Get over it and just enjoy the damn films for what they are. Jealous much?

Guillermo del Toro is all about horror/thriller. I don't see anyone complain about that though. Lame hypocrites.

Sucker-Punch is a must watch for people that like quality action. For those that don't like the genre it is no different than listening to a music you don't like. Simply turn it off. No one cares about your opinions.

After accidentally killing her little sister Baby Doll (Emily Browning) her evil step-dad (Gerard Plunkett) puts her into a mental institution where they force their patients into prostitution. Taught by the dance instructor Madam Gorski (Carlo Gugino) to retreat into her fantasies, Baby Doll is encouraged to a pursue a gift for a hypnotic dance, whisking her away to a series of war zones searching for 5 items that she needs to escape the institution and get away from the villainous caretaker of the institution Blue (played by Academy-Award winner Oscar Issac). Envisioning herself as a whore, she teams up with broken women alongside, Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), and Amber (Jamie Chung from "Dragonball: Evolution"), to escape before her time with the mysterious High Roller doctor (John Hamm) arrives. Personally woman shouldn't watch the film it represents them terribly, but I recommend the action scenes and if you love action films check this one out. The actors were serviceable, but their performances were great. Honestly the film shouldn't been rated PG-13. Grade A Expand

The soundtrack is ACE! and just the whole mood of the film is on point!

There are not enough words to describe the love I have for this film .It truly is a work of art.
When I first saw this in the cinema back in 2011 I walked out very puzzled and confused , I understood the whole , '"inception " esque aspect and the whole connection in a little girl's mind . It reminded me a lot of Alice in wonderland that a character seems to dive into her mind to escape a darker reality .
The cast was excellent especially browning and Oscar Issac. Browning tho pretty much sold her scenes with her pouts and eyes she carried the movie alongside her girls.
But when it ended I felt like scenes were missing and that the movie was going by pretty fast and playing it safe it certain scenes .
The visuals were breathtaking and the soundtrack was awesome but I felt disappointed and knew I needed to revisit this once the Blu-ray came out
And what do you know an extended cut gets released and from then on out my perception of this film changed drastically .
For starters the opening of this film is my favorite opening in the history of cinema ,not only does it tell a story in five minutes but it does it so beautifully ,tragically and you get a sense of what is to come. The soundtrack blends well and gives a sense of helpfulness and despair but hope all in one.
When Baby gets to the asylum Snyder masterfully gives us enough detail to set up this dark and haunting prison and when the film switches to sweet pea I knew he was trying to connect these two ladies together. Once the first fantasy kicks in I knew what to expect and I was right each object planned for the escape related to each beautiful fantasy sequence that showcased the bad ass girls each shining in their own
The vibrant dark colors made me question if this took place in the DC universe also because of baby doll's pigtails it could be a Harley Quinn spin off
gorgeous visuals, poignant story make this dream like film perfect!

Another Zack Snyder film that has being completely misunderstood and obliterated by critics. It must be something personal, really.
I love this film. I find it beautiful, moving, heart breaking and inspiring.
Escapism can be a coping mechanism. Fantasies can empower. Girls can have power fantasies too, you know. Who didn't want to be Sailor Moon at some point in their lives?
Although at the end of the day you can't escape reality completely. Real life problems are still there waiting for you in your daydreams. Consequences are inevitable. Sacrifices have to be made.
Zack Snyder is usually accused of making movies that are too bleak, nihilistic and hopeless. But this is not a bleak, nihilistic or hopeless movie. There is hope for the survivors. Things can get better. The abusers do pay for their crimes. Even the ones that made mistakes can find redemption. Sacrifices are not worthless.
Do not judge these girls by the clothes they wear. Do not judge this movie as misogynistic or sexist just because the girls are pretty and sexy. A girl can kick ass and look sexy at the same time. And these girls are wearing more clothes that all the men in 300 (2006), so don't call Zack sexist. He just likes pretty people.

About an hour before I went to see Sucker Punch I watched the preview which was my first introduction to the movie. Certainly not a masterpiece of writing or acting but it was pure fun to watch. My biggest complaint would be that we didn't get enough character development considering it was an ensemble cast. For sure, it's a "check your brain at the door" kind of flick, but I don't think they could have found more ways to pack what is obviously the nerdy dreams of Zack Snyder (and, by extension, every nerd) into one movie. It's all very silly, and Snyder needs to work on writing better dialogue, but it definitely exceeded my (somewhat tailored thanks to the critics) expectations. Expand

In the hand of Zack Snyder (Director), everything has been set to a new level inThiz is my most anticipated movie for thiz year. And ended up exactly as I expected, it is a mega visual feast that I have ever seen since THE MATRIX (1999). In the hand of Zack Snyder (Director), everything has been set to a new level in height and adrenaline rush, I am talking about the visualisation aspect here. When 300 (2006) was booming, people keep questioning: whether Snyder was only able to assemble 300 muscly and brawny men to do those macho things? Well, now for the answer he brings us five sexy and deadly ladies to fight against Giant Samurai and Vicious Dragon in alternative World War II! Actually, the story centers on a girl named Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is accused as a rebel and placed into mental institution. In that place, she meets Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung). Together, they are setting up an escape plan through some reality and fantasy experiences. To accomplish the mission, they have to collect five items which are: a map, fire, a knife, a key and one last mysterious element. Emily Browning is perfectly cast as Baby Doll, her character is so innocent and unpredictably lethal at the same time. Other Casts worth mentioning here are: Carla Gugino, Oscar Isaac, Jon Hamm and the most unforgettable appearance, Scott Glenn as the Wise Man. I love the opening scene so much when it tells how Baby Doll was slandered by her abusive stepfather, the sequence tells so amazingly dramatic, dark comical and elegant. The camera movement is dynamic, the transition from one point to another is effective, and the music was superbly fit. Love every minute of it. For the ending, you might feel a little bit disappointed if you expect something more, but for me it was perfect! The ending put us in a floating situation and makes you keep wondering around even when you were walking out of theater. I always enjoy the movie which can dive into a blurred reality and explain cleverly what is the connection between the reality world. Commonly, thiz kind of movie always utters some new hidden philosophy. Just remember, If you do not stand for something, you will fall for anything.

Wow, I'm really surprised how low of a score this movie is getting from conventional critics... "Oh No! A movie with lots of action and special effects!? How low-brow!"

You know what, this movie wasn't made to win picture of the year. It's an action movie. And it's a really fun action movie at that. It's got a pretty good storyline, loads of fun action, and hot girls jumping around, killin' folks with guns, swords and knee-high boots. But it's more than just that.

This movie is action movie fun in it's purist form. Forget your worries from all the negative reviews, and just go see. You'll be glad you did.

The action was fresh, the set pieces were unique, and everything in the movie made my imagination go nuts. All in all, I was tremendously entertained and I am sad to see that something different from the norm is getting shot down without a fair shake. The story made sense but I could see if you're not paying attention how you can miss it. The plot: Girl gets framed by jealous step-father because he wasn't in the will of the girl's step mother. Step-father takes girl to asylum where he bribes an orderly to forge paperwork and have the girl lobotomized. The movie is about her trying to escape from the asylum. The movie has a very "Wizard of Oz" feel to it where items and characters that were in the asylum with the girl get transformed and become part of the girl's delusion. Everything that happens that's NOT the asylum is part of the delusion. The setting of the movie subtley changes from being at the asylum to being at a brothel where the crooked orderly changes from an orderly to the head cheese of the establishment. From there, since its not reality, everything and anything can go (flying monkeys excluded). Really, my conclusion is if you like Zach Snyder action movies, you should watch this movie. Really if you love visual eye candy you should watch this movie. This movie, while not one I would watch 8 gazillion times in a theater is worth watching at least once (and I think the second time will be even better than the first), its a movie that when it comes out on Blu-ray, I'll pick it up and watch it every once in awhile. I actually really enjoyed this movie. Granted, it's not Oscar winner, but it really doesn't pretend to be. It is what it is, and makes no apologies. I've read professional "critics" write about how outlandish some of the scenes are, but II actually really enjoyed this movie. Granted, it's not Oscar winner, but it really doesn't pretend to be. It is what it is, and makes no apologies. I've read professional "critics" write about how outlandish some of the scenes are, but I think that they kinda missed the whole point of the movie. Yes, it is outlandish; and no, the seemingly random fight scenes really don't tie into reality, but that's the beauty of it. The battle sequences take place in a fantasy within a fantasy and primarily serve as metaphors for missions or tasks that Baby Doll (the main character) et al. must accomplish. So, yes, these all take place in Baby Doll's imagination so they're allowed to be as unrealistic and outlandish as she wants it to be. My main gripe with this movie, however, is that Zack Synder (the director) was forced to maintain a PG13 movie, and the movie really seemed like he had been severely crippled and forced to work with one hand tied behind his back. Snyder is best known for his highly stylized and gory action sequences, but the ones in this movie just didn't seem on the same level as his other hits, "300" and "Watchmen". If only he'd been allowed to go all out and make his usual rated R or unrated movie, I think things would've turned out much better. Expand

I'm not sure that I understood it, but I did _like_ it. I walked out of the cinema satisfied that I had just watched a movie that entertained and has left me pondering various elements for the last day or so. I will definitely watch it again to see if I can make more sense of it.

Unlike so much of what Hollywood is producing lately this was different. The storyline, the style, the action sequences, the anachronistic elements of the plot...it was all obviously and deliberately chosen to push boundaries and buttons. Which boundaries and which buttons appears to depend on what you bring with you...those who want to see misogyny will see it, those who want to see simple video-game action will see it, those who want to see nonsensical plot will see it. Those who go in with an open mind will probably come away with something more. I can see where the critics have traction - the plot is convoluted, the costumes are sexy, the action sequences seem to be video game inspired, there are sexist/misogynistic elements.

BUT

There is more. There are so many layers and explanations for those layers and many and varied. Are the imaginings of Babydoll actually happening? Are her 'team' various parts of her psyche? Is the whole thing her lobotmised "reality"? My friends and I love action movies, but of late they have become so predictable or over-the-top that we often pass comments and have little discussions during the film...not this one. We were all glued to it, straining to analyse and understand, and thoroughly entertained.

It seems like nowadays that the critics are acting up like whiny, sarcastic and unsatisfied customers with a thin trace of patience. Seriously, this movie was **** awesome! Well...Ok, I can agree that this film isn't that great but its sure one hell of a good punch. A punch so strong, it'll knock the senses out of you. Anyways, here is my review:
The Storyline:
Basically, it's about a girl trying to escape a hospital for the mentally insane (Why females only? I'm guessing this hospital is for girls that are "crazy?"-and-in-their-early-twenties-with-a-hot-body...hm?) and so she's trying to get other girls to do the same and all they need is a couple of items and they are all set...it sounds easy but it isn't so easy after all.
So what does this have to deal with Nazi zombies, fire-breathing dragons, robots, huge-ass samurai warriors, etc? Well, whenever Babydoll (Emily Browning, the girl I was talking about) closes her eyes she imagines an alternative universe that has the same goals and objectives but in different situation. Zack Snyder wants us to see some sort of similarities between the two worlds (reality and fantasy) so what ever is happening in the fantasy world is happening in the real world, mostly involving the characters. Characters are: Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens). Let us not forget about Madame Gorski, "love your accent by the way" who is played by Carla Gugino. Mr. Blue (Oscar Isaac), who isn't a bad character but when he's acting like a **** he becomes a **** and you'll hate him after what he did. The story is (to me) well told and there are moments in which you just gasp in awe and in shock. Female Empowerment:
The girls are just trying to play as what the guys in the film are seeing them as, sexy-ass sluts. But I think Zack Snyder is trying to tell us that females can be viewed as sex objects because a lot of people see them that way (reason why they wear tight, barely naked outfits in the real world and also in the fantasy world) but the females just don't see themselves that way and so the fantasy world helps us to see that they are just a band of females trying to survive so they'll do anything to survive. Nuff said. BTW: "Don't mess with these chicks, they'll kill you." Visuals:
Impressive and well worth my time especially the fantasy world, when the 5 of them are trying to complete each dangerously-crazy missions.
Characters:
The guys are punks and even though (sometimes) Babydoll looks like she's about to die, she has a moments of "lets beat the crap out of them." The girls are dimensional and very serviceable; they laugh, cry, yell and scream (Good one Abbie) so nothing outstanding but...serviceable. Overall,
Didn't want to talk too much because it's just a film but the critics hit it hard and I didn't think it was fair for Zack Snyder or for any new directors that make up their own ideas to be assaulted with bad reviews (come on "4 zero stars."). Anyways, I think Zack Snyder stepped up a notch from his other movies like taking flight with the owls or seeing tight-thong warriors in a bloody battle. This one was just...it blew my mind. I give him credit and just for you guys to know, it ends with a happy but unusual note. I know that Zack Snyder likes to darken his movies and this one was pretty much unnerving (sometimes even depressing). An 8.5

Sucker Punch, for me, reminded me of a mash up of comics, anime, video games and femme fatale style heroics which, if you're a fan of, you'll enjoy. The other mash up involved here that is interesting is how it jumps from the 40s style burlesque era to a strange, steampunk like world in the fantasies. This is, in no way, a perfect movie, and I'm not about to try to convince anyone that it has the best acting, CG, stunts or anything. What I did like was that the movie got me interested in the girls' dilemmas and even though there wasn't much background except on Baby Doll, Rocket and Sweet Pea, there was enough there to make me want to see them make it to the end. The idea that this girl, Baby Doll transforms so drastically from a school girl to a heroine in her alternate reality is just... well... cool. It's all silliness in the end but the fact is there is some great entertainment in this movie if you let go of the critic in you and just enjoy it for what it is. An action thriller. And a pretty good one too. Expand

This movie is not a pineapple pastry that you can easily sink your teeth into. You must have a very abstract, hyper-thoughtful, and eccentric type of mind to understand Zack Snyder's works. Lots of people complain about not being able to relate to the characters in this movie. But they fail to see that the director is not interested in telling them a good story here. He has a certain idea, and being a champion of the visual element, presents it in a manner that is both exhilarating and satisfying to all and sundry. This movie is a graphical extravaganza, meant to depict a thought from Snyder's mental depths. If you expect to be a part of the story, prepare to be disappointed. Consider it your misfortune if you are unable to enjoy this movie. You don't have the taste for it...yet. Expand

The premise of the movie is simple, our female lead Babydoll who was wrongly institutionalized by his stepfather is trying to escape before she undergoes a lobotomy. Backed up by four friends and armed with her wild imaginations and allegedly amazing dancing skills which is the portal to her amazing imagination, fighting oversized ninjas in one moment and an army of zombies in the next. The story was passable, the action sequences were beautiful and it was all visually compelling, the only special effects that a Snyder movie can give. But what I really love about the movie is the rocking soundtrack, my favourite was Sweet Dreams in the opening sequence of the movie, sang by Emily Browning herself. Female empowerment and the fight for freedom are the main themes of the movie. It's about a woman taking control of her own destiny. To be honest, the hook for me to watch this was Emily, I really liked her in Lemony Snickets and have been waiting years for an exciting new movie from her, didn't really like The Uninvited. And now I understand why Christopher Nolan chose Zack Snyder for the reboot of Superman, he's another visionary filmmaker doing something rarely seen in Hollywood anymore, an original project. If you want some mindless-beautiful-looking-fun this is the movie to watch, this movie is to 2011 what The A-team was to 2010. Most entertaining movie of the year so far. Expand

There are a few things that could be picked apart, and I don't have a grudge against anyone thinking so. That being said, there are FAR too many reviews (both user reviews and critics) trashing this film for no apparent reason other than saying it was "garbage," etc. If you have nothing at all positive to say about this film, you've either jumped on the "trashing SUCKER PUNCH" bandwagon, or you're more mindless than you think the film is!... No film deserves a 0/10, let alone this one!!!

Now, onto my own critique...

THE GOOD:
- First and foremost, I thought the CGI visuals were completely masterful!
- The cinematography could rival 300's any day of the week.
- The fight choreography was very well-done.
- The soundtrack fit the film like a glove
- The actresses sold their action roles extremely well... You really do believe these girls trained as hard as they did for their roles!

THE QUESTIONABLE:
- Although some people have said some (or all) of the acting wasn't very good, I disagree!... Sure, there are times where the not-so-perfect dialogue masks the acting portrayed, but I wouldn't have assumed otherwise, and nor should you! The acting was better (overall) than this sort of film usually lends itself to.
- The story, overall, is the main thing that seems to set off most people... Whereas the film's story should have been more evolved and extended, it's also not exactly what's intended to be the film's main focus point, either. The trying-to-be-deep nature of the plot does fall a bit flat (mainly due to the length of time in the film we actually get a sense for a deep story), but I get what Zack Snyder was trying to do, and I think he pulled it off pretty well.
- I'm surprised to see how many people didn't get the real world, fantasy world, and action/fantasy world elements to the film... The fantasy world is nothing more than a coping mechanism for Baby Doll's depressing situation, and the action/fantasy world is a thought-induced representation of her expression through "dance."

In the end, a couple things to take note of that have hurt this film (to some) is 1: the MPAA enforcing a PG-13 rating, which caused the unfortunate cutting of 18 minutes (which includes scenes and moments that many people wanted!) which will be on the Director's Cut version, and a trailer that captured a lot of attention from people that wouldn't fit into the semi-niche market the film is for.

In the end, I feel Snyder did a good job that really only bigger fans will truly appreciate.
... I give it 7-7.5/10, but I liked it about 8.5/10.

Thanks a lot for reading,
Mike Sorge

The fantasy sequences do get a bit repetitive at first, but your expectations are soon subverted. The storyline seems a bit weak, even if you take the time to understand it. But I'll still give it a 7 because I really enjoyed the movie, all told.

Basic synopsis from Warner Bros available on my blog: http://cdgaming.blogspot.com/2011/06/review-sucker-punch.html :

Before you sit down to see this film (coming out on Blu Ray, DVD and Digital Download June 28th) you really need to let go of any sense of what the film is, was, or what was said about it. This is a movie that one needs to see to believe. Is it that bad? Is it art? Is it a gigantic mess thrown at film upon an epic scale, hoping to lure the people who like to watch trains wreck? Ladies, if you had any interest in seeing this film, the best you can hope for is being owed one after you've sat through it with your significant other. Be prepared to be owed... oh... 2 chick flicks and a back rub, with breakfast in bed thrown on top. This is a movie solely made for the boys. If you want to get out of it, pretend to be the man sitting on the bench in the mall waiting for you to get out of the girlie clothing store. This is a movie about young women in skimpy clothing swinging ninja swords and shooting bullets at monsters, zombie nazis, and robots, all in a level by level progression similar to a video game. They do this through the imagination of a girl who's sultry dancing is so amazing that everybody in the room forgets that anything in the world is happening, especially the scantily clad girlies picking their pockets for the things they need to escape the asylum.

Sound ridiculous yet? I don't think I've seen fatter lips on any one woman in my life compared to Babydoll (portrayed by Emily Browning), the lead girlie of the bunch. They are so thick and round and focused on in the movie, it's almost like lip-porn and you think she'll actuallu need a wonderbra for them for fear that she'll fall on her face. Throughout the movie, she does land heavily a number of times, crushing cement and concrete blocks, no doubt from the weight she bears upon her porceline face. The other girls featured in this romp are all equally portrayed, with Vanessa Hudgens (ironically named Blondie) bearing the hair that is similar to the mane of a raven haired lion, Abbie Cornish the wildly savage "Sweet Pea" and her saucy mouthed little sister "Rocket" (played by Jena Malone) both acting like they need whips, chains, rubber, and a Rihanna song to get them through the day, and Jenna Chung, the prototypical polite, cute Asian girl Amber. This movie is a who's who of teenage boys wet dreams.

Take away the dirty girlie aspect of the film and you do get a very well filmed style piece. Giant Samurai's, Clockwork Zombie Nazi's, killer robots, dragons, you name it, all were wonderfully brought to life by Watchmen director Zack Snyder. You are thrown into a gritty and grim world of post war America, where the men are boss and the women hate them for it. This whole film screams hate at the way women were treated and portrayed in the 50's and 60's. The film is eye openingly awesome to look at, with gigantic set pieces and surprisingly credible choreographed fight scenes. The leads all did their jobs and did them amazingly well, in particular Browning, who does not look out of place at all in her school girl outfit slaying demons and zombies with style and grace.

This movie is very loud, with a rocking soundtrack playing through most every scene. It truly helps the viewer get into the scenes and bring them along for the ride. Think of that feeling you get when you are on a roller coaster. There's no real particular "sound" but there is unbelievably loud noise all around you. The wind in your ears, the white noise of screaming people all around you, the carts on the tracks. After a while it all blends into the experience that is a roller coaster. It is all very similar in this film. After one or two scenes, you don't actually hear the music, you are just immersed into each scene as if you are almost there.

This is a movie not for the feint of heart. As mentioned earlier, girls, wait outside. Let the men go in and enjoy the film. Some ladies, carry tissues. This is a loud, male fantasy induced slogfest, with nothing for you, beyond teaching you what your man might like in the bedroom. Guys, get ready to owe the women a favor or two for this one, but be more than willing and ready to do it too. This is one for you.

Score: 7 out of 10...

...9 out of 10 if you are a pervert.

I think that it has a great cast, great script and great plot/story. Even if critics said that this has awful script and story. But in my opinion I really loved the story. I just loved it for what it really is, an action packed movie with girls in it, what more can I say?? It is basically a modern day Alice in Wonderland!

It is a visual feast, an exercise in directorial self-indulgence, a self-important tale of excess violence, sexuality, and intensity. Much has been said of the obvious flaws in "Sucker Punch." However, in spite of all of that, it remains imaginative, original, and deserves to be seen and discussed.

I absolutely believe that this is the sort of film that requires the viewer to go in with a realistic expectation of what you will experience. Not in terms of knowing the plot or details of the story, but understanding that they are not going to see a typical film, with a typical story arc and typical characters. The story has shades of "Pan's Labyrinth" and the style blends Snyder's previous films "300", "Dawn of the Dead" and "Watchmen" with Anime and many popular adventure video games. The action is elaborate and often stunning, but exists mainly as an excuse to use every flashy directing trick in the post-Matrix book. This idea could have gotten old very fast but having a different style of combat each time we descended into Baby Doll's imagination kept things fresh enough to not lose momentum. The soundtrack is made up of remixed well-known tunes (including Queen, the Beatles, and Jefferson Airplane) and a pounding score that honestly does a lot towards keeping things interesting and pouring as much intensity and atmosphere into the scene as possible. The actual story to "Sucker Punch" may seem like little more than a device to get us to each action piece, but there is more substance to this film than the vast majority of critics have been willing to admit. I will not claim the acting to be anything more than it is: serviceable. Other than two of the main characters, little back story is provided and the other characters are there merely to provide other eye candy or in the mens case, be evil and give us a reason to care about the fate of "baby doll", the bombshell cover girl. But I have read many reviews that paint the story as an "incoherent plot" and a "jumbled mess." This is one of those times where I wonder if I watched a different film, or if the large majority of the viewing public lacks the basic intellect or attention span to "get" any film that doesn't follow traditional narrative structure. I don't say this to be arrogant or rude, I really don't. But I do have to say it because once again a film with complaints such as these thrown out from all directions ended up being quite easy to follow. The plot was certainly coherent and featured an arc that concluded the story and themes presented for the main characters. The device of the main action scenes were clearly in the imagination of the main character to get through traumatic experiences. I realize that following a story from the real world, to an imagination, and then an imagination from there requires some attention be paid, but it is not too much to ask when it is laid out for the viewer. This is why I will defend Sucker Punch from those reviews that claim it is all visual impact, with no emotion or visceral stimulation. The overarching theme may be ridiculous, silly, or incredulous, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. To dismiss all of this as simply violent soft-core porn on the basis on the misogynistic school-girl outfits and dark subject matter is doing a disservice to the creator as well as it's audience.

I may seem over defensive in my praise for the merits of "Sucker Punch", but as I previously stated this is nowhere close to a perfect film. In fact, it's almost impossible to give a rating to because you first must establish what you are rating. Is it my enjoyment of the picture? I certainly enjoyed myself from beginning to end. Should I rate it on a critical scale in terms of how well-made it is? Even to someone that absolutely loathed the story, subject matter, and characters, it would be impossible to deny the craft behind the camera of Zack Snyder. It is a well-produced film with absolutely gorgeous cinematography and many memorable visuals. But the drawbacks are as clear as day. It is over-the-top to an absurd degree. It is overly self-indulgent. It features a lot of mediocre acting. It contains cringe-worthy dialog. It's not surprising that many find the overall theme to be ridiculous. That's not even getting into the supposedly "girl-power" message being undermined by its clear objectifying nature. But "Sucker Punch" is unwilling to limit itself to audience expectations, riding the imagination of its creator and giving us something different and daring. In my opinion, this something we could use more of in today's film landscape. Love it or absolutely detest it, but don't dismiss "Sucker Punch" as just a mindless action flick. It at least gives a valiant attempt to do more. 7.5/10

Sucker Punch is a movie with vibrant details, exquisite surroundings and a twisted and confusing storyline that's very unique.
The acting in the story is to be expected by such raw and young actresses, though they weren't horrible.
The plot itself was very unique, better than a bland ordinary every-day movie. Though it's not meant for a mainstream audience. The movie itself has twists and is a movie that probably didn't appeal to the mass-crowd unlike the creator expected. It really needs the audience to actually concentate on the movie. It's definetly non-appealing to the mass-crowd.
The movie itself was very good, with nail-biting action shots until it went downhill in the ending.
Overall it's a good movie, nothing spectacular soo it's a 7/10.

SUCKER PUNCH is a visual knock-outBaby Doll imagines an elaborate fantasy world in which she plans her escape from a corrupt mental facility after being institutionalized by her abusive stepfather in Zack Snyder's SUCKER PUNCH from 2011. SUCKER PUNCH is a visual knock-out with mind-blowing special effects and non-stop action that will leave you breathless! Snyder has assembled the perfect cast for this exploitation/fantasy cross-over that take the otherwise empty characters and blow them up into larger-than-life super-heroes. SUCKER PUNCH pushes teen fetishism to the edge with its ultra-sexy heroines that are armed to the teeth with swords and guns, taking on everything from dragons to samurai warriors, undead Nazi soldiers, and futuristic androids in their skimpy schoolgirl outfits. It is so easy to become entranced by the cute girls, stunning fantasy worlds, and huge explosions that minor things like plot and character hardly seem to matter. Recommended for fans of 300, SIN CITY, and MUTANT CHRONICLES.

First factor: It's a highly original film, there will never be anything like Sucker Punch. Second Factor, the plot is very complicated. Like Inception and Pulp Fiction, you have to see it twice or even thrice in order to fully dominate your knowledge of it, but this is also the reason why it's getting so mauled by critics. They seem to not like a complicated film nowadays. But I personally found it very captivating. Third Factor, the acting is the weakest point here. It is not bad but it isn't a powerhouse it could be. Fourth Factor, the visual effects and action sequences are top notch and high class constructed. It is badass. I am very disappointed this movie did not grab and Oscar nom for Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing and Mixing. It truly deserved it. And the Fifth Factor: THE SOUNDTRACK WAS BEAUTIFUL. HANDS DOWN, the BEST album of 2011! The movie overall came to a seven. It's great but could do better in some small aspects. Expand

Zack Snyder nails the soundtrack, visuals & action sequences impeccably. However, this has to be one of the most misunderstood films ever created. So, here's a quick summary of the story.

The character baby doll suffers a traumatic experience at the hands of her father, who is also responsible for her mother's death. As an act of desperation, she tries to save her sister from the abusive father with a gun, but accidently shoots her sister instead. As a result, baby doll is sent to a mental institution. The father pays off a corrupt worker, in the hopes of forcing a lobotomy.

This is where the story starts to get trippy, as an act of desperation, baby doll starts to go crazy by changing her perception, where she imagines being left in a whorehouse (metaphor for the mental institution). In order to escape the whorehouse, she must dwell further into her imaginations, where she meets a wise man, who tells her to collect 5 items in order to escape. These 5 items are collected by baby doll through 5 separate imaginations. When the plan fails at the end of the movie, baby doll creates a distraction to help sweet pea escape, where she meets the wise man driving the bus. This film was a commentary/representation of how the gaming culture and men tend to view woman. Also, the ending of this film makes you question who's point of view the story is being told. Baby doll, sweet pea or the bus driver? In my humble opinion, this film should have been a hard R instead of its PG rating. This would have allowed Zack Snyder to make this film a lot more brutal & disturbing.

Even, it's not as good as other films that compare to Zack Synder's films like Dawn of the Dead and 300, especially Watchmen that I didn't like. But almost half fun for those hottest girls with terrific costumes to fight in the confusion of the video game world that surrounds the atmosphere, it's really cool. Although, the story is out of place that there's no explanation about the story that it didn't tell anything about the movie from the beginning to the end, it's really downsize of the entire movie that falls down of the silly scenes that keeps going and wondering what the story is really about. But at the time, it's almost good to the bad film and that's okay that it brings the girls into action and Synder is trying hard for the movie, it really brings the intention to a clever movie. It's worth seeing? I think so! So see this movie or rent it, or skip it that people think it really sucks! You won't regret for this. Expand

The steam punk looks dark and was very well done. The animations and effects were great! A mix of elements that I personally love it! Japan with its feudal warriors, orcs and dragons, robots, WWII ... I loved the references. The music choice was perfect. I can not stop listening! And Emily Browning really can sing! I loved the version of Sweet Dreams at the beginning! However, the film also has several drawbacks... First, the performances, just say it were a little disappointing, the girls could have had more charisma. I didn't found so captivating. But surely, Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac were great! The script is weak, could have been much better handled, but it seems that the focus of the film was in fact the action. It even tries to pass a moral interesting, but it seemed that only remembered it at the beginning and end of the movie. Everything is a bit exaggerated and even! And the fights seemed like real games! But I think it will its acceptance of the film. After all, it all goes through the mind of Babydoll, so anything can happen. Ultimately, I think it's worth seeing if you like the theme. There is not an excellent script, but an action is really nice to watch. Expand

Pure Fantasy, dark subject matter, great parts strung together forming a huge pile if you know what I mean! This director is fantastic though and he is learning what works on us and what doesn't, Im sure his next one will be a hit, I loved his 300.

The plot, however, feels like a video game, punctuated with every chick revenge film cliche in the book. Jena Malone, Scott Glenn, and Jon Hamm were certainly fun in this. I had incredibly low expectations for this film. I just wanted to see women with huge racks hurting people with swords and guns. On that level, it totally delivered, but it's hardly a cinematic masterpiece. Expand

The film's fight sequences don't hold up with the main story most times, and neither does the soundtrack a couple of times, but I didn't care one bit. I'm saw the Rotten Tomatoes score and set my standards low for watching this, and I enjoyed the film for what it was: hot chicks jumping around fighting in skimpy clothing, explosions, dragons, gunfights, sword fights, and blimps exploding. Some of the actors are good, like Emily Browning, Jamie Cheung, Abbie Cornish, and the guy who plays the stepfather, but some are pretty campy, like Vanessa Hudgens (as Blondie, a brunette whose name is Blondie), and Oscar Issacs. One stands out as the worst, which is Carla Gugino as Dr. Gorski, who's supposed to be playing a Polish doctor, but her accent waivers from Germany (Ja?) (or to gamers, probably Wakkan, ja?) to Russian (aCCcentuate the "CCCCCC" sound with plenty of phlegm) instead. And the dialogue is so stock and so lame that it makes Tommy Wisseau look like Charlie Kaufman. The action scenes, while extremely well done, come out of nowhere, even inside an already existing fantasy (she imagines sword fighting and gun fighting while on a stage at a brothel dancing while on a stage in the mental institution dancing [and no, that's not a typo]), and lack any logic to the point of total anachronism (helicopters in medieval times, samurais with huge guns in feudal Japan, and zombies in Nazi-Germany, girls in the 50s imagining using 21st century M-16s, MP-5s, and high tech mechas with a jet pack and an internal computer-powered aiming system during WWII, and trying to destroy high-tech bombs on a 20th century monorail), and most times have little to no attachment to the storyline (what the hell does fighting a dragon have to do with stealing a lighter, or dismantling a bomb have to do with stealing a knife, or even Japanese wise men have to do with go-go dancing?). The characters most times are irrational. For example, Babydoll clearly hears that Blue will forge Dr. Gorski's signature to get her lobotomized. She never takes into consideration telling Dr. Gorski, the only person who can allow lobotomies and is against the procedure, to cancel it and have Blue arrested, nor does Dr. Gorski call the police when Blue shoots two of the patients. Also, the message, suspense, and emotion are lost in translation, because Snyder refused to give anyone else any detailed exposition as much as Babydoll, instead of giving everyone ample exposition so that it can be anyone's story, and have its dramatic twist work. There is no way to soften up or sugar-coat the fact that this movie truly sucks, but it's just simply eye candy. Take it or leave it. Is it one of the greatest? PFFFT-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, NO!! Is it one of the best of the year? PFFFT-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, NO!! Is it an entertaining movie for those with the mindset of a guy who wants to see hot girls in glorious action sequences and nothing else? Completely. Expand

Hot chicks, action, weird scene changes that have no chance to be chained together cohesively. If you go in with those expectations, they are fulfilled well. The movie delivers little else though, character development, surprising twists, reasonable metaphors etc. Considering it comes from the same guy behind 300 and watchmen, you know the idea. A few more words on the (SPOILER ALERT) imaginations--I wish they found a way to fit the fantasy action bits with the real world. For instance, when the plan is to hold everyone's attention while one girl sneaks into the backroom to copy a map, at least do a scene with 4 girls holding the front to cover for the last girl. As it stands now, we get similar gun fights for 10 minute stretches, totally irrelevant to where the plot is. The audience therefore takes 10 minute breaks from the story every so often, making the thin storyline feel even worse. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh dear, what a great piece of escapist feelgood film making this could have been. Loved the style, bullet time, music, etc. The story and characterisation let it down badly however. The story-within-a-story premise is overly confusing and doesn't work very well. It detracts from the overall experience. Films with girls in high heels fighting nazi corpses whilst driving mechs should not try to be too clever with their audience. The story was overall too bleak, with too many needless deaths (why did the two girls in the gang have to get executed?) and an unsatisfying conclusion (heroine is a vegetable and we don't see the villain get anything like a suitable comeuppance). Ultimately this film made one big mistake - why should the audience even care what happens when half the story takes place in someone's imagination? Expand

Surprisingly awesome! I originally had no desire to see this film, but I'm glad I did. Stunning action sequences, beautiful cinematography, perfect soundtrack....Sucker Punch is the most fun I have had at the theater in a while.

I loved the concept. The reality vs. action scenes were unique and kept me interested the whole time. The cinematography was absolutely stunning; it's definitely one of the best things about the film. The action/fighting scenes were unbelievable! The first major action sequence is as thrilling as the average movie climax. Just when you think the action can't get any more intense, the next scene arrives and delivers again. The thing I liked about the action was that none of the scenes were alike. So many films contain battle sequences that are basically identical, but Sucker Punch contains multiple scenes, all intense for different reasons.

Overall, the acting is only okay, as I expected, but there were a few performances that really surprised me. Jena Malone gives a great great performance as Rocket. She steals every scene she's in...too bad she had very little substance to work with. Abbie Cornish also gives a good performance. In the beginning I wasn't impressed, but towards the second half of the film she really delivers. Oscar Isaac though gives the best performance as the villain, Blue.

I completely disagree with the critics on this one, I'm not quite sure what they were looking for when they were watching this. This film is receiving a lot of criticism that it doesn't deserve. Personally, I found the film to be intriguing, intense, and completely original. I loved it! Check this film out, I recommend it to everyone.

I love the visual style just like in every Zack Snyder film out there, the dream sequences were kinda fun I had to admit, I liked the metaphor on what it's trying to say, the cover version of songs were sprisingly good, and the production value is spot on.
However, not everything is great though. The acting was wooden, I found the characters to be one dimensional, the story itself isn't all that captivating, and it does feel like that it goes on to more style rather than substance.

But overall, I thought it was okay.

What I like about it are the deeper elements of the story, how some things (most of the film) aren't as obvious as everyone expects them to be. It's not so easy to understand the first time, and it makes you think about it after it ends. This is very well handled; and it's very cool how people can come out with a lot of different theories about why everything happened the way it did and how none of them are wrong.
Sadly, there are other not so pleasant things that come along with the film, like the mediocre-good acting, the unnecessarily accelerated character development, some exaggerated scenes, the fact that in the action sequences our character can't die or at least we don't worry about it, and the sometimes dumb script.
Still, it's a cool psychological action thriller that you are going to enjoy if you really try to understand it, and can make you think about it long after it's finished, as long as you allow it to do it.

Watched this in 2020, aware of its mixed reputation. Can't say I really liked it, but at the same time it was different from most action movies and that's a plus.
A movie that blends fantasy and reality, with the former mirrored by the latter (or vice versa). It fails where most action movies do, in the boring action sequences that fail to capture one's attention for long. Also, characters are barely there, underdeveloped and uninteresting.
Like most movies nowadays, it unfortunately proposes yet again the assumption "man is evil, cowardly and good for nothing; woman is good, courageous and unstoppable", and yet it failed to please feminists nonetheless, duh. That's because they want movies like "The Last Jedis" where men are not only all of the above, but also under complete control by women, treated like worthless pets that are punished when they pee on the carpet.
All in all, an interesting and unusual concept but a less than perfect execution. A movie that does look like a videogame or several, now Demon's Souls, now stampunk CoD, now Deus Ex. I don't know what would make it better, but then I generally dislike movies that are too heavy on action. At least it's more absurd action than usual.
