Un documentaire très intéressant sur la production et le tournage du second meilleur film de tous les temps sur le sport automobile : le fameux et stupéfiant Le Mans ! le premier étant bien entendu l’incroyable Grand Prix de 1966 alors que Le Mans après bien des vicissitudes n’est sortiUn documentaire très intéressant sur la production et le tournage du second meilleur film de tous les temps sur le sport automobile : le fameux et stupéfiant Le Mans ! le premier étant bien entendu l’incroyable Grand Prix de 1966 alors que Le Mans après bien des vicissitudes n’est sorti qu’en 1971.

Beaucoup de témoignages et quelques images d’archives racontent la genèse de ce « tonnerre mécanique », puis les difficultés, les atermoiements, les dépassements des délais et du budget, la mauvaise humeur et les conflits… et l’absence de scénario ! on apprend bien des choses ici tant sur le film lui-même que sur Steve McQueen, la superstar de l’époque passionnée de course automobile.

On peut regretter quelques digressions dans cet étonnant « making of » qui se veut quasiment exhaustif mais qui omet de nous parler de la réception du film après tant de galères accumulées ainsi que de sa viabilité commerciale après tous ses retards… A noter par ailleurs que seuls les sous-titres sont proposés, aucune voix française n’est venue doubler le documentaire.

On mesure en tout cas à quel point un tel projet était aussi intrépide qu’ambitieux… et dangereux ! de vrais pilotes, de vraies voitures, de vrais monstres, un vrai circuit… De nos jours, c’est l’ordinateur qui s’occupe de tout… l’authenticité en prend un coup mais personne n’est blessé. C’est ici donc un hommage à une autre époque, aussi bien à la façon de faire des films que de nous rappeler ce temps où Le Mans était (encore) une course exceptionnelle !… Expand
