The main protagonistThe movie thrives on practical effects, splendid CGI and great new actors which are both a breath of fresh air from the prequels. However, this movie is basically a shot for shot remake of the the original New Hope movie. The main protagonist grew up on a desert planet, the Jedi are dead, a galactic empire(2.0) is the big baddie, there's a dark robed antagonist with a robotic sinister voice, a droid needs to get to the rebellion while carrying important information, there's a death star. There's even a freaken trench run! A sequel does not retell the original story, it's supposed to build off the franchise, continuing where it left off.It also hurts that this movie undid everything the rebel heroes gained in between episodes 4–5–6.
And some of the new characters where very lacking orr very bad... Kylo Ren is one of the worst villains I have ever seen in a movie, bar none. This is a man-child and I really, really don't understand his motivation. If you have parents like Han and Leia and you grow up in the resistance, I can understand being neglected sometimes. I honestly get the feeling that I could take him one-on-one with a lightsaber. I seriously wonder how the bad guys were able to build such a super weapon when it is obvious that they lack the power or the competency to pull anything like that off without Leia and the New Republic knowing about it? Why are the New Republic armies called the "Resistance" when they won the galaxy thirty years ago.
Rey, at first introduction is a scavanger girl with a giid heart(tohugh she was gonna leave BB8 behind AFTER saving him) the nas the plot progresses she comes out as annoyingly PERFECT? There's no inner turmoil,no adversity,no power struggle and no really great trials or effort on her part to accomplish things. She picks up things way too quickly and it lacks the sense of someone even trying for example… How doesn't she know how to work ships when she's only been salvaging Star Destroyer parts? How can anyone remember that scene where she force mind controls a stormtrooper to basically do everything except bend over and take her lightsaber up the arse. Her lack of experience or rather suspiciously too much of it. Kylo Ren was a flawed character but at least you could tell he HAD training in how to use his powers and lightsaber — you don't put a toddler in charge of an Empire do you?
TFA relies heavily on random ass coincidences to propel its plot more than any other star wars film, even including TLJ. And it is certainly derivative and lays a shaky foundation for the new trilogy in some ways. But on the whole, it created massive potential for TLJ and the sequel trilogy to go in a new and interesting direction. TFA is a good film to enjoy but as part of a franchise the worst new addition. I feared the franchise might be heading in the wrong direction. Boy was I right.

J.J Abrams preys on nostalgia to sway the opinion of audiences. This is shown by Rey’s costume being resemblant to Luke’s, Kylo Ren’s costume looking like Darth Vader’s costume, Fin wanting to run away from the danger just like Han Solo in “A New Hope”, the crew having their own droid to follow them around just like R2D2, the existence of a planet-destroying space station, and The first order stormtroopers look like the empire’s stormtroopers. The movie doesn’t do much original and it leaches on its past success without adding anything new. The film also presents our beloved heroes from the originals’ efforts as a failure in an attempt to milk Star Wars dry. This film is enjoyable but for all the wrong reasons Expand

An enjoyable beginning to the sequel trilogy!

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' entertained me. It felt like a fresh direction for the overall franchise, which I guess is little surprise given George Lucas was not a major part of this. I actually didn't notice a great deal of difference, or at least as much as I thought there'd be given his exclusion.

I enjoyed seeing the new cast merge with the old trio, even if there are only small appearances from two of the latter. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are excellent additions, both give top performances - I will say I didn't sense major chemistry between the two, but I assume that'll come soon enough. Adam Driver, meanwhile, suits his role nicely.

Original trio Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill all feature, though - as alluded to - Ford is the only one that has a major part to play. Either way, it's cool seeing them back in the franchise.

Everything else about the film satisfied me, I'm not saying it's perfect - esp. the plot - but I found it perfectly fun to watch. For me, it's a strong start for this era of 'Star Wars'.

I think the actors did a good job, specially Adam Driver, but they can't save the mess. I like Daisy Ridley as Rey, too bad she plays the stereotypical and generic strong female protagonist (Mary Sue) with no development or weaknesses, just innately the best at everything. Then we have the multicultural and inclusive good guys, that fulfill every quota, against the evil white males. Action scenes are good if you can ignore the many cliches and deus ex machina that take away all tension.

This one is the better of the 3 (or should I say the less bad). It's passable all-around, and entertaining if you just want to turn off your brain, forget it's Star Wars and spend a couple hours with an OK movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie opens and we immediately have a rather serious problem, in that the first order make rather little sense as a faction in this universe. Thirty years ago in the universe, the second death star was destroyed, the imperial fleet was shattered, and all of the empire's leadership was killed. The entire galaxy rejoices, and the resistance goes on to form a new republic. Except that that's not actually what happened. The first order is arguably stronger than the empire ever was. They have an army, a fleet, and a planet-sized death star that can destroy a star system with a single shot. On the other hand, Luke has seemingly trained zero jedi, the republic, if it even exists (we aren't told this) are very weak, to the point where they allow the first order to kidnap children en masse to swell their ranks, with impunity. Leia is commanding a very underpowered "resistance" instead of serving as a senator, or chancellor, or general of the republic military. The point is that after their triumph in episode VI, this movie wants us to believe that it was just a minor setback to the bad guys and that the good guys have done exactly nothing since then. Here we see how the general nostalgia-bait in the sequel trilogy comes around to hamper it, as continuity is completely thrown out the window.

Kylo Ren is great in his first moments. Stopping the blaster bolt from Poe with the force was undoubtedly impressive. Then he bungles his interrogation of the old man, makes poor decisions that allow the good guys to escape with the very thing that he wants more than anything, assaults a messenger for telling him something he didn't want to hear when he was the one who allowed it to come to pass and takes his anger out on a computer console like a child. For what is supposed to be our new Vader, he comes nowhere close.

Rey has proven to be a controversial figure and for good reason. In this movie she can speak wookiee despite never having met one, perfectly fly the Millenium Falcon through the skeleton of a Star Destroyer despite never having flown it before, and can beat an experienced force user in lightsaber combat the first time she uses it. It is an established fact in Star Wars that you have to learn how to wield a lightsaber before using it because you are much more likely to kill yourself with it rather than do anything to your enemy. Finn is guilty of this too, but at least he loses his fight with Kylo. Rey is a character with powers and skills she hasn't earned and are unexplained. The rules of the Star Wars universe and the plot of the sequel bend to orbit around her and this does, in fact, make her a "Mary Sue", which is a term you have no doubt heard. No, it is not sexist. I am not a fragile white man, in fact I am none of those things, I am someone deeply passionate about storytelling and movies. Rey is here to push a political agenda and as someone who already aligns with that agenda for the most part, I'm not a fan. She is poorly written, uninteresting and what could amount to decent conflicts are squandered.

Finn is interesting, but woefully mishandled. It is legitimately an interesting concept to present what amounts to the epitome of a faceless henchman actually being a real, complex person. But 5 minutes later he's happily mowing down his fellow child soldiers in a TIE fighter and unfortunately doesn't get too many impactful character moments after that. Still, John Boyega's performance was one of the positive aspects of this film.

To round off the review, some more things I liked. The film was very visually impressive. The action kept me engaged even if the plot couldn't. Han Solo is always a win in my book.

I sense no potential whatsoever with this Star Wars movie since nothing really memorable happens in this movie. TFA was directed, written, and produced by the man Jar Jar Abrams himself. This goes for TROS too if I'm being honest.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm gonna be honest here. Star Wars: Episode VII was the only reason why I started watching Star Wars in the first place. Since it was so popular ($2 billion, seriously? I thought Star Wars wasn't a thing anymore!), I decided to take a look at the franchise and seeing how the original and prequel trilogies were, I was expecting this movie to also be somewhere across those lines. Turns out it is nothing like them. First of all, let's get the praises done with. The CGI is awesome. With that said, let's move on to the bad stuff.

The story begins with a Stormtrooper named Finn deciding not to kill innocent people. First of all, what's with these new age space movies and concern for innocent people's lives? It happened in Star Trek (also directed by JJ Abrams, I think I'm seeing a pattern here), it happened in The Expanse and now it's happening here also. Star Wars is meant to be about fighting and killing. Concern for innocent people is exactly the opposite of what we come to watch a Star Wars movie for. And to add insult to the injury, that concern doesn't even stay for very long. Immediately Finn proceeds to kill every single Stormtrooper and escape from there.

After that there's Commander Po, and something something Finn wears his jacket. After some time the scene transitions to female Luke. Now I don't have any problem with a female Jedi, and I don't think anyone does for that matter. Ahsoka Tano was a good character. But when your character's entire personality is being female and having a plot armour because of it, then it goes a little too far. Especially considering a plot armour for being female comes when the character is actually very gorgeous because men normally have a thing for seeing hot girls fight, but Rey here has a very sister-like look. There's no way we would ever want her to win. Keep getting beaten, yes, but not win.

So anyway she teams up with BB-8, Po's droid and then they team up with Finn to find Po which they just happen to do so with some plot convenience. After that they join the resistance to fight the Empire led by Kylo Ren. He's literally the only likeable character in this entire movie (other than BB-8 probably because of the way he gave a thumbs-up with a lighter, it was very funny and cute). It's kinda sad that they ruined him in the next movie. Speaking of the next movie, they also ruined the part where Luke and Rey meet each other. I was expecting it to be a very big moment. Of course I won't be cutting any points from this movie for it, but it's not like the sequel wasn't already planned. They had already planned to play with the audience's emotions like this.

I can understand very well why there are so many people who hate the sequels. This movie looks like a complete rip-off of the original only making it worse in every aspect. Even I hate the fact that its poster does not look like a painting but rather a collage like every other Disney movie nowadays. I simply can't stand watching it again. Only the cool visuals were able to save it from being a train wreck that the next two movies turned out to be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So what if it's familiar? So what if it follows the same template as A New Hope. That doesn't deflate my enjoyment of this movie, or keep me from believing that this is the best SW film Disney has offered us. In this movie we are introduced to a new generation of heroes. Rey is a scavenger who was abandoned on the harsh desert planet Jakku by her parents. Finn was a stromtrooper who was stolen from a family he's never known, but chooses to run rather than slaughter innocents for his superiors. Poe is the Resistance's best pilot who is sent to retrieve the films maguffin: a map leading to the last Jedi Luke Skywalker. We are also rejoined with iconic legacy characters: Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, and kind of R2,3PO,and Master Luke. They must go up against the First Order with has arisen from the ashes of the Galactic Empire and decides to one up them by creating a even bigger Death Star. Great job guys you really did it this time didn't you. Anyway this new regime is headed my Supreme Leader Snoke who has his own wannabe Vader in Han and Leia's son: Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. What this film does right is the characters, action, fan service, and over all entertainment value, however I must say that the film's greatest strength in sticking to the formula of the original is also it's greatest weakness. It fails to establish the relations between the all the factions, leaving that up to the novels and visual dictionaries to do, it also can be a bit convenient at times: Han finding the Falcon and R2 showing up with the map, and finally the inclusion of the Starkiller Base doesn't connect to the main plot line.

But other then that this is a Star Wars movie that can be loved by all fans of the franchise both new and old.

It is a tad disappointing that Episode VII borrows heavily from Episode IV in terms of its story delivery, but honestly, there was probably no other way to have been able to get the franchise up and going again with the same attention to care and detail as the previous films, specifically, the first three made between 1977-1983. While it is a bit unoriginal in story, it does make up for this in a successful introduction of new characters and re-introduction into legacy favorites (even if they don’t get equal attention). It is a movie made to delight the inner child at heart, paying homage to what has come before, while setting up new stakes and further adventures for a new generation of fans. While not all the new characters get equal development, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver are standout performances with the respective roles. Driver embodies a perfect blend of pent of rage and vulnerability, as Ridley is enduring and charismatic to a fault. Harrison Ford’s reprisal of Han Solo in over 30 years is a joy and blast, and it does feel like “we’re home” just like he said in that teaser. The Force Awakens feels like a reunion with old friends, and it proves Star Wars is still very relevant to fans and audiences. Expand

This was so good, the perfect movie for the franchise to return with! Plenty of nostalgic moments whilst bringing in new characters...

Yes, there are cons, but there are pros as well. Let's deal with the cons first:
1. It is not very original. There are too many similarities to New Hope.
2. Learning curve for these new heroes is way too steep. They acquire skills too fast. This is my biggest objection to this movie, however the story would not work without it, or there would have to be other characters involved.
3. Too many unanswered questions. I understand they do not wish to reveal everything in one movie, but at times it feels like the sole purpose of this movie is to serve as teaser for sequels.
4. Action is back to the level of episodes 4, 5, and 6 (not even 6).
5. The new Sith lord is not very impressive (at least compared to the Emperor). He looks like alien who crashed on Earth and got hit on the head with an axe by a villager (which is what the people of my village used to do whenever aliens visited)
Other than that, I have no major objections. And for the pros:
1. Han Solo and Chewbacca.
2. Finn is funny and likable new character, and he works out well with Han Solo.
3. Rey is pretty, when she's not trying too hard to act with intense emotions
4. No Hayden Christensen or Natalie Portman. Their screen time in parts 1 through 3 was one of the worst movie experiences ever.
5. No Jar Jar Binks or the like.
6. The new droid is adorable. I love the way it climbs down the stairs. I'd love to see R2D2 try that.
if this was the first Star Wars movie ever, it could have been much more impressive. We've just had too much of the Star Wars Universe in the past, and expectations were seriously high.
Here is how I would list/rate Star Wars movies starting with the best:
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Hew Hope
3. Revenge of the Sith (Oooh if it wasn't for Portman and Christensen, this one would be number 1)
4. The Force Awakens
5. Return of the Jedi
6. Phantom Menace
7.Clone Wars
I only wish the technology had been available when they made parts 4, 5, 6 to make the action and special effects better. Yoda fighting and other action scenes are the only reasons I even acknowledge Clone Wars and Phantom Menace.

A basic rehash of episode 4 with bits of the other films sprinkled in. Daisy Ridley while talented falls short of her role, she comes off as awkward and stilted and somehow still cocky and overconfident. The juxtaposition of her relative skill with her outward attitude makes unlikeable at best and unbelievable at worst. She and her character have plenty of room for growth though. John Boyega on the other hand is wholly out of place. His character is an uninteresting waste of screentime, made worse by an almost childish performance that has no place in AAA cinema. Only the performances of Harrison Ford, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaacs save this from being an entirely unenjoyable film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Too bad people is trying to troll this movie. The cast is superb. As people already said, Finn fits the comedy role pretty well. Rey is just amazing, everyone's so hyped about this character. Even little boys were picking Rey's toys over other characters. She's probably the best female Star Wars character ever.
The classic characters also shine on this one. I thought they might not fit well with the others, but they did a great job. You can feel the excitement in every scene.
About Kylo Ren/Adam Driver. Can't understand all the hate. I think the character is easy to understand... he's just a kid who wants to make Snoke (and Vader's memory) proud of him. He's obviously overwhelmed by the pressure and his trembling voice while he speaks with Rey really says a lot about the character .Funny to see many people complaining about the similarities with "A new hope" and after that saying that "Ren is a Vader wannabee, we cannot accept him as a new Vader".
Highly recommended, this movie is great it's Star Wars top 3 for me, over episodes VI, I, II and III.

PS: BB-8

2020 edit:
Too bad they kept screwing everything after this one. Now this movie feels unnecessary and bland. I gave it a 9, changed it to 6.

A new story about old stories. The obvious thing is that the new film of the new trilogy looks very nice, even when compared with the films of the 2000s, and especially when compared with the original trilogy. But, the story itself very strongly in some places begins to resemble the "New Hope". There are Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and others in this film, but in a more different form, which is why history begins to repeat itself accordingly. But even with these moments, you want to watch the new Star Wars, because it's all just as beautiful and interesting. New characters have entered this huge universe well and I hope they will take root well in it. Expand

It looked like a bad fanfic but I had hope after I've seen Rey on a behavior more alike a SW character. Hold watching patiently it until the Falcon flight, that was pretty good. Then, the teenager reaction after it was way too cringe, never that a scavenger or a soldier would react like that. I gave up, rewatching the prequels was more entertaining than this. Expand

The visual effects, puppets, and animatronics were gorgeous and fantastic especially BB-8 and R2-D2. The writing, story, and screenplay were spectacular. The acting performances from Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Harrison Ford, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, and Domhnall Gleeson were stupendous. The way the script just throws away Han Solo with little fanfare... come on! There has to be a heroic exit for Solo! Like ramming an Imperial battlecruiser to save his friends, something like that? But no! Terrible storyline decisions and bad writing cripple this mishmash. And the son -- totally unsympathetic and uninteresting character acts like a petulant boy. Awful. Every bit as bad as the prequels. Expand

My dad and I were a part of the many people who went to the premiere of Star Wars The Force Awakens. I was cautiously optimistic I was going to like it, surely it was in good hands. And yeah, we finished the movie and it... was okay... But surprisingly felt very stale compared the the first six movies. Apparently they're calling it the Skywalker trilogy now, which doesn't make much sense to me, because Star Wars revolved around th Skywalkers, it should've ended after the other 6... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The Force Awakens was very dissapointing to me, I knew I should like this, and everyone else at my highschool had nothing but good things to say about it. What was this feeling I was getting? For the first time in my life, my beliefs were being challenged as I was the only one of my class that didn't like the new Star Wars movie. People say it was a return to form, but to me, it just felt like a rehash of the old movies. An amalgamation of "Star Wars greatest hits." Particularly A New Hope. I was baffled. It was like when in the anime bleach, where the characters RESET the story, characters and development every arc, and redo the same arc over again, just with different villains.

It feels trite, and overdone. It doesn't feel new to me. I also don't know if it was just me, but I feel like the story beats went by extremely fast, I don't know, but it felt really jarring. I should like this, I should be glad I see Chewbacca and Han Solo after many years. But everything in the movie felt contrived, including the new stormtrooper splinter group that emerged post Star Wars Return of the Jedi. These guys felt like lesser versions of their superior, now defunct, empirical counter-parts. And the man leading them is such a one dimensional, mustache twirling villain. So when he used a planet canon to obliterate 5 other planets ala Death Star style, I felt so numb, I just didn't care. Why would you blow up FIVE, habitable, conquerable planets? If your'e ultimate goal is to subjugate the galaxy and it's subjects, then whats the point if their are no subjects to subjugate?... That was a mouthful...

There are decisions that make no sense in this story that I swear only occurred because "It happened in A New Hope."

On a different note, I was hoping we'd get more characterization from the main characters, but I guess that's too much to ask for. Rey is as one dimensional as they come, she wants to do things for others because "It's the right thing to do" and never shows any sign of nuance. Like, what has the galaxy ever given her? It would make more sense if she was a more synical woman who fends for herself because that is how she grew up her entire life, and her character arc would be to learn to fight for others the more she gets close to them. Because the closer she gets to her new friends, the more likely she'll be to fight for them as they break down her barriers from over the years and make her care for others. THAT would be better characterization of her in my opinion.

And then there's Finn... He's a stormtrooper who deserted the evil stormtrooper group because he no longer wanted to do these evil things. On the surface, that's good character development. REALLY GOOD! And you can do A LOT with that. It would've been interesting to explore his character more. But instead he's rellogated to the role of Rey's body guard. Seriously, everytime he yells "REY! REY! REY!" anytime she gets kidnapped, I want to blow out my ear drums. He is so annoying at times it is laughably bad how much he depends on Rey. But no because "I can't do anything without my master Rey" (a joke quote)

So the characters are poorly written, and don't even get me started on Poe because he felt almost insignificant to the entire movie, he'd be better off left out entirely and instead used in the sequels, like how the OG MC's met new characters in the original movies with every new episode.

I will say now that I think visually the film is great eye candy, and John Williams score is fantastic!

I was just so let down by every other aspect of this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Force Awakens is a very "safe" movie with which to start a new Star Wars trilogy. It is similar to A New Hope, which was the first movie in the original trilogy and it was also financially succesful and very well received, so it makes sense they have a lot of elements in common.

The Force Awakens is basically A New Hope, but with modern effects and new characters. And I love the new characters. Rey is a likable and charismatic protagonist. She's a scavanger on a desert planet, waiting for her parents to return. Kylo Ren is the "new Darth Vader" and I find him interesting. He worships Darth Vader and he's young, angry and brash. The way he stops a blaster shot is cool as hell. His red lightsaber is also unique. Finn is another interesting character. What's special about him is that he's initially a "bad" guy. He's a stormtrooper, but he defects and joins the good guys. And there are certain moments when his knowledge about the New Order comes in handy, so I thought that was very cool. The story itself is great. As I said earlier, it's similar to the story of A New Hope and I don't mind that. The big twist is that Kylo Ren kills his own father, Han Solo.

I'm a Star Wars fan and I enjoyed The Force Awakens. It's what I expected. I had fun watching it and I recommend it to every person who is interested in Sci-Fi movies with a dash of space magic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In these moments, the viewer almost has the impression as if something was cut out and they've just missed the last 5 minutes. Most likely, this is just plot armor and these dialogues and actions just reflect an idea of the writers that had to happen but no one thought how to show the viewer why these things had to happen. In the first part, the viewer might not be very annoyed by this, though, because it fits well into the overall mystery that the viewer might expect to be resolved in the future parts. Expand

Technically completely flawless to my eyes. My main problem with it was its script, way too many plot holes, nonsenses and recycled storylines from the original trilogy.

I don't like Finn's character or Rey's character, but John Boyega and Daisy Ridley acted decently well in my opinion. Adam Driver was awesome and the movie had great visuals, but for me it doesn't feel enough.

This seemed like a good start to the sequel trilogy, though it's more of a remake of New Hope with a few things changed.

Only redeeming factor are the incredible visuals. The story is truely horrible. Massive massive plot holes. Only watch if there literally nothing else to watch

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abrams vitality & teasing lent himself a safe starting point, which ended up as the high point of the trilogy. The final moments on the island elevate my rating. If the movie had cut just before, this would've been a 6 for me. Expand

The film's beats and plot points feel incredibly similar to the OT from the very first scene. The film never really establishes anything new because it strives so hard to be unique. People that claim it is a remake are not quite as far off, in my opinion. I was also let down by the character of Finn. Boyega does a terrific job, but his is a very underdeveloped and erratic character. felt more like comedy relief than anything else, which is unfortunate because he almost deserves to be a lead character. The best of the sequel trilogy movies, yet the writing is still lazy and unimaginative. Character development is a bit lackluster and at times, contradictory. Nothing really original or special here to see.

It’s a fine movie. It’s fun at times but mediocre. It’s not awful, but it’s not good.

If you did not like the movie, that is fine by me. You are 100% entitled to your opinion, but it is flat out just your opinion.
