The Force Awakens is by far my favorite Star Wars movie of all time! I never liked how Luke was so timid in the originals and the prequels was not memorable. However, I absolutely love this movie! I saw it in theaters 9 times.

A Disappointing Resurgence: Star Wars - The Force Awakens and then Dies.

The much-anticipated film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, sadly falls short of its lofty ambitions, as it seems to have traded its beloved interstellar odyssey for blatant politicization and lackluster character development. It took on the colossal task of revitalizing the most cherished franchise in history and instead of channeling its original essence, it morphed into a spectacle with undertones of political discourse. This may be a trend in current-day Hollywood, but it surely doesn't suit a universe as distinctive as Star Wars.

Our protagonist, Rey, is unfortunately portrayed as a character who is inexplicably proficient in nearly every skill presented, with no clear justification or storyline explaining her talents. In stark contrast to Luke Skywalker from the original series, who we witnessed transform from an unknowing farm boy to a Jedi Knight, Rey's character seems to have sidestepped this necessary journey of growth and development. This sudden "mastery" weakens her character arc and dampens the credibility of the narrative.

Furthermore, the film's decision to abruptly discard long-standing characters like Han Solo, arguably because of financial constraints on retaining Harrison Ford, is jarring and disappointing. These seasoned characters hold the heartstrings of many devoted fans and their callous disposal is a disservice to the loyalty of the Star Wars community.

On the antagonistic front, we are presented with a villain, Kylo Ren, who fails to command the same dread and fascination as his predecessor, Darth Vader. His persona lacks the compelling allure and ruthless power that characterized Vader, leaving him as an antagonist unworthy of the Star Wars legacy.

The Force Awakens marks a disturbing decline for the Star Wars series and fans of the original series may struggle with this new direction. It comes across as a politicized drama, a far cry from the space opera we have grown to love and cherish. While it does carry the Star Wars brand, it may be more palatable to viewers if it is considered as an elaborate fan fiction rather than a core addition to the Star Wars canon. This film certainly contains spectacle and high budget effects, but in the face of its narrative and thematic shortcomings, these appear as mere fluff.

In conclusion, while The Force Awakens will undeniably attract a vast audience, the true Star Wars fans should tread with caution. The film's disconnection from the spirit of its predecessors and its capitulation to contemporary politics mark a troubling transition for this beloved saga.

The problem is, it's just Episode IV but the characters are switched around a bit. There are some new roles, and some returning characters, but the plot and characters are so incredibly derivative of A New Hope that it's hard not to factor in. However, it is still a very well-made film, and adds just enough new stuff to feel like it's worthy to exist. Expand

Just like George Lucas said himself, this is a carbon copy of the story of Episode IV, but without the old Trio we know, love and wanted to See but instead with new heroes noone wanted.
Rey specifically is an insult to everything Luke stands for and achieved in the original trilogy.
She's basically a female Luke, without the training and experience he went through but she easily outperforms him.
Unlike Luke, who failed in his first duel against Vader, she easily defeats Kylo, because of course she does, she's a WOMAN.
This episode is what started it all.
The whole woke and feminist bullsh()t that plagues every modern movie.
When I watched it back then I didn't like it that much, I was mostly confused how they managed to create such an underwhelming movie.
Now, with a more experienced look into modern media, I understand, this movie is where it all went downhill.
Don't watch, its a nightmare.

John Boyega and the character Fin are very annoying. Adam Driver is not bad, but Kylo Ren is a sleeping pill. Only BB-8 is fun to watch.
The story is boring and simple, reminds too much to episode 4. Do you remember the complex story of episode 1-3 with the dense political backgrounds, this was great. But here you have just action, shouting, deep breathing and dumb dialogues, that do not touch at all. Fun for the dumb masses, but not for people with brain. In addition it is not comprehensible, when you see a 50 kg woman, who just know her jedi powers is fighting a male veteran Sith and can hurt him. Fairy tale, feminist political correct propaganda, you can call it, how you want. Oh, and dont forget, some stormtroppers are black...You remember Episode 2? The stormtroopers are clones and the white man Jango Fett was the original. But they wanted to put a black guy into the movie, because of diversity lol.
The story doesnt sense in the SW universe also: The empire is dead in the end of Episode 6, the jedi won. Where did the new lord came from and why are the rebels so weak again? Just to tell a new simple story? There are even more logical mistakes. I like only one thing in the movie: the visuall effects and some action scenes.

Btw. this movie is rated as 7,8/10 at imdb.com. Look what kind of references are the most helpful one there...the worst ratings. How it is possible to have such a high rating there? And the ratings were much higher years ago. Corruption?

We canSo I know the Sequels get a bunch of hate for various reasons, but I have a feeling that we look at the movies like we're all a bunch of amateur film critics, and miss the fact that movies are meant to be enjoyed more than dissected. We can spend all our time debating over semantics and minutia over canon and lore, comparing which movie makes more sense. I didn't watch star wars until I was 18 when I was a senior in high school, so I don't have a bunch of nostalgia for one movie or another. Personally, this movie was an enjoyable experience. I had a fun time watching this movie in theaters and the times I've seen it at home. It's very much like Episode 4, if not a bit less wondrous than we may have experienced when first watching it. There are few perfect movies out there, and no perfect Star Wars IPs, but I enjoyed this movie from start to finish and watched it again without feeling the movie was boring or contrived. Give the movie a chance, if nothing else as an actual movie first and an installment of Star Wars second, it'll do you a lot of good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately, this movie suffers because of what came before it and what came after it. It undermined the original trilogy and was then undermined by it's own sequel. So it's in an awkward space where it's payoffs didn't land and it's strong elements are kind of soured by the knowledge to what's to come. A lot of the narrative pull was around mystery boxes - What is Luke up to? Why is Rey so awesome? Who is Snoke? How did X happen? - since the sequel did nothing compelling with those mystery boxes we're left with a fun but ultimately crippled film. As a standalone film I'd probably give it a 7. But as a film caught between what came before and what came after it shrivels down to a 4 out of 10. So lets go in the middle and give it a 5. Rey and Finn deserved better. Expand

A new story about old stories. The obvious thing is that the new film of the new trilogy looks very nice, even when compared with the films of the 2000s, and especially when compared with the original trilogy. But, the story itself very strongly in some places begins to resemble the "New Hope". There are Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and others in this film, but in a more different form, which is why history begins to repeat itself accordingly. But even with these moments, you want to watch the new Star Wars, because it's all just as beautiful and interesting. A basic rehash of episode 4 with bits of the other films sprinkled in. Daisy Ridley while talented falls short of her role, she comes off as awkward and stilted and somehow still cocky and overconfident. The juxtaposition of her relative skill with her outward attitude makes unlikeable at best and unbelievable at worst. She and her character have plenty of room for growth though. John Boyega on the other hand is wholly out of place. His character is an uninteresting waste of screentime, made worse by an almost childish performance that has no place in AAA cinema. It is a remake of A New Hope, but the pacing is completely off. There are numerous climaxes throughout the film that do little to further the story, and everything wraps up at lighting speed at the end.

Initially, the mostly real sets and practical effects immerse you in this real, lived-in universe… then everything becomes a cgi festival without a single real-looking set or prop for minutes at a time.

The characters are all immediate best friends, and it’s hard to relate to perfect characters. You don’t get to borrow character development from movies that came out 30 years ago, you have to build it in your own movie.

Especially 'Empire Strikes Back' while considering 'A New Hope' a genre landmark. Didn't think the prequel films were that bad personally, but they had a lot wrong with them and were a long way from great, especially 'Attack of the Clones'.

Despite seeing 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' around the time it first came out (maybe a little after), there was a long time of being put off by the vitriolic hate it's gotten here and the practical war zone there is in order to review it (even when it was critically acclaimed). Finally mustering the courage, count me in as somebody who loved 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens'. A masterpiece? No. Better than the prequels? Absolutely, and although some may disagree this is saying a lot. The best 'Star Wars' film since 'The Return of the Jedi?' Yes.

'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' is not the most original plot-wise. It has been criticised for being a re-hash of 'A New Hope', understandably. However, instead of being done in a cheap and slap-in-the-face way, it felt like an affectionate and nostalgic homage. Exemplified by bringing back major characters from the original trilogy in supporting roles. JJ Abrams, and this may be considered blasphemy, does a much better job here than he did with his 'Star Trek' reboot films, here he keeps the original spirit of the original trilogy intact while giving the film its own identity at the same time.

While it certainly dazzles in spectacle and action, 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' doesn't feel too big, too noisy or too chaotic at the expense of creating memorable characters, a fun story and brains and heart. The characters are memorable with easily identifiable leads, the original trilogy characters bringing a lot of affectionate nostalgia and a well executed if not iconic (not by Darth Vader standards anyhow) villain in Kylo Ren (unpredictable and dangerous but feeling he is morally justified).

The story lacks originality but more than makes up for it in energy, non-stop heart-thumping thrills and excitement, generosity, a cheerfulness that is positively space operatic, vibrant charm and a few fresh twists along the way. In many ways it is a celebration of the universe while also an expansion of it. It is sometimes sentimental but never overly so, one crucial death scene is just heart-wrenching (particularly Chewbacca's reaction) and doesn't feel like a slap in the face to the character in question.

Could the villains have been better written? Ren is fine but Snoke only just about works as a character thanks to the visual effects and especially the powerfully enigmatic with a touch of vulnerability performance of Andy Serkis, other than that the character is underwritten. Also felt that Gwendoline Christie's character was unnecessary, so limited was her screen time.

Visually, 'Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens' is a triumph. It is gorgeously shot and designed with Abrams' visual storytelling shining far more here than it has in other films he's done. The special effects are a dazzling marvel. John Williams delivers yet another rousing score that has its own character but cleverly includes the well-known iconic themes from the previous films. Thank goodness that the dialogue contains little to none of the cheesiness heard in the prequels, and it even has more layers than that of the original trilogy.

Acting also shines, with winning charismatic performances from John Boyega and particularly Daisy Ridley. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher still have it, while Max Von Sydow shows himself to be a master of gestures and eye contact speaking louder than words. Adam Driver is a suitably menacing Ren and Serkis makes much of his somewhat underwritten character. Oscar Isaac gives a typically strong performance.

In conclusion, a great film, the best 'Star Wars' film since 'The Return of the Jedi' and one of the best of the saga too. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Boy was I wrong. The Force Awakens is a pointless retelling of The Return of the Jedi which was a pointless retelling of the great original Star Wars. If Disney had an ounce of brains, after spending billions to buy Lusasfilm they would have hired the best sci-fi/fantasy writers they could and plot out a 3-film story arc that would revive the Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon feel of the original Star War. They would have reunited Luke, Han, and Leia here to set in motion a new series of films with a new set of characters—It doesn't happen.

Instead, Disney threw together a soulless, big budget shut-em-up. The only point of the film is lure Star Wars fans back who have vainly hoped that Disney might recapture the magic of the original and The Empire Strikes Back.

The Force Awakens is the War Department Telegram that informs you STAR WARS IS DEAD.

This movie is like dangeling keys infront of a toddler.
I once was a huge Star Wars fan, reading the books playing the games and watched the Original Trilogy at least once a year.
TFA is a bad ripoff of A New Hope, the main protagonist is a bland Mary Sue, the other protagonist is a bumbeling idiot, they have a little robot with them wich is a R2D2 ripoff, they need to destroy a bigger Deathstar, MaRey Sue is from a desertplanet and finds not R2D2 wich has information the Empire... the First Order needs(sounds familiar). They coincidentaly find the Milenium Falcon wich MaRey Sue can fly like a pro to escape the not Empire, they coincidentaly meet Han Solo a few minutes later who coincidentaly was near and scanned for the Falcon, coincidentaly Hans enemys (some guys he ripped of) arrive a few minutes later, after that they fly to a cantina Bar where coincidentaly Lukes old Lightsaber is stored.
Just a few examples of the bad writing.
The villian is a bad copy of Vader and the other villian is a bad copy of the Emperor but with a bigger hologram.

If you want episode seven read the Timothy Zahn books or listen to the Audiobooks.

Kylo Ren is just the creation of what movie studios think that young kids will think look the coolest and Kylo Ren is just a cheap copy of Vader. Now you could say that it is the point for the reason of that he realy wants to be like Vader but that doesnt even need to be in the story. He just seems like a littly cry baby that whenever something doesnt go his way he gets pissed. Rey is also just a boring character in this movie aswell nothing special about her. Poe is just the new Han Solo and he is not even a good Han Solo at that. As a stand alone character as a Han Solo clone he is not good. Conclusion: Boring movie, nothing realy intresting happens. While it is a bit unoriginal in story, it does make up for this in a successful introduction of new characters and re-introduction into legacy favorites (even if they don’t get equal attention). It is a movie made to delight the inner child at heart, paying homage to what has come before, while setting up new stakes and further adventures for a new generation of fans. While not all the new characters get equal development, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver are standout performances with the respective roles. Driver embodies a perfect blend of pent of rage and vulnerability, as Ridley is enduring and charismatic to a fault. Harrison Ford’s reprisal of Han Solo in over 30 years is a joy and blast, and it does feel like “we’re home” just like he said in that teaser. The Force Awakens feels like a reunion with old friends, and it proves Star Wars is still very relevant to fans and audiences. Expand

It is a tad disappointing that Episode VII borrows heavily from Episode IV in terms of its story delivery, but honestly, there was probably no other way to have been able to get the franchise up and going again with the same attention to care and detail as the previous films, specifically, the first three made between 1977-1983. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm gonna be honest here. Star Wars: Episode VII was the only reason why I started watching Star Wars in the first place. Since it was so popular ($2 billion, seriously? I thought Star Wars wasn't a thing anymore!), I decided to take a look at the franchise and seeing how the original and prequel trilogies were, I was expecting this movie to also be somewhere across those lines. Turns out it is nothing like them. First of all, let's get the praises done with. The CGI is awesome. With that said, let's move on to the bad stuff.

The story begins with a Stormtrooper named Finn deciding not to kill innocent people. First of all, what's with these new age space movies and concern for innocent people's lives? It happened in Star Trek (also directed by JJ Abrams, I think I'm seeing a pattern here), it happened in The Expanse and now it's happening here also. Star Wars is meant to be about fighting and killing. Concern for innocent people is exactly the opposite of what we come to watch a Star Wars movie for. And to add insult to the injury, that concern doesn't even stay for very long. Immediately Finn proceeds to kill every single Stormtrooper and escape from there.

After that there's Commander Po, and something something Finn wears his jacket. After some time the scene transitions to female Luke. Now I don't have any problem with a female Jedi, and I don't think anyone does for that matter. Ahsoka Tano was a good character. But when your character's entire personality is being female and having a plot armour because of it, then it goes a little too far. Especially considering a plot armour for being female comes when the character is actually very gorgeous because men normally have a thing for seeing hot girls fight, but Rey here has a very sister-like look. There's no way we would ever want her to win. Keep getting beaten, yes, but not win.

So anyway she teams up with BB-8, Po's droid and then they team up with Finn to find Po which they just happen to do so with some plot convenience. After that they join the resistance to fight the Empire led by Kylo Ren. He's literally the only likeable character in this entire movie (other than BB-8 probably because of the way he gave a thumbs-up with a lighter, it was very funny and cute). It's kinda sad that they ruined him in the next movie. Speaking of the next movie, they also ruined the part where Luke and Rey meet each other. I was expecting it to be a very big moment. Of course I won't be cutting any points from this movie for it, but it's not like the sequel wasn't already planned. They had already planned to play with the audience's emotions like this.

I can understand very well why there are so many people who hate the sequels. This movie looks like a complete rip-off of the original only making it worse in every aspect. Even I hate the fact that its poster does not look like a painting but rather a collage like every other Disney movie nowadays. I simply can't stand watching it again. Only the cool visuals were able to save it from being a train wreck that the next two movies turned out to be.

My dad and I were a part of the many people who went to the premiere of Star Wars The Force Awakens. I was cautiously optimistic I was going to like it, surely it was in good hands. And yeah, we finished the movie and it... was okay... But surprisingly felt very stale compared the the first six movies. Apparently they're calling it the Skywalker trilogy now, which doesn't make much sense to me, because Star Wars revolved around th Skywalkers, it should've ended after the other 6... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The Force Awakens was very dissapointing to me, I knew I should like this, and everyone else at my highschool had nothing but good things to say about it. What was this feeling I was getting? For the first time in my life, my beliefs were being challenged as I was the only one of my class that didn't like the new Star Wars movie. People say it was a return to form, but to me, it just felt like a rehash of the old movies. An amalgamation of "Star Wars greatest hits." Particularly A New Hope. I was baffled. It was like when in the anime bleach, where the characters RESET the story, characters and development every arc, and redo the same arc over again, just with different villains.

It feels trite, and overdone. It doesn't feel new to me. I also don't know if it was just me, but I feel like the story beats went by extremely fast, I don't know, but it felt really jarring. I should like this, I should be glad I see Chewbacca and Han Solo after many years. But everything in the movie felt contrived, including the new stormtrooper splinter group that emerged post Star Wars Return of the Jedi. These guys felt like lesser versions of their superior, now defunct, empirical counter-parts. And the man leading them is such a one dimensional, mustache twirling villain. So when he used a planet canon to obliterate 5 other planets ala Death Star style, I felt so numb, I just didn't care. Why would you blow up FIVE, habitable, conquerable planets? If your'e ultimate goal is to subjugate the galaxy and it's subjects, then whats the point if their are no subjects to subjugate?... That was a mouthful...

There are decisions that make no sense in this story that I swear only occurred because "It happened in A New Hope."

On a different note, I was hoping we'd get more characterization from the main characters, but I guess that's too much to ask for. Rey is as one dimensional as they come, she wants to do things for others because "It's the right thing to do" and never shows any sign of nuance. Like, what has the galaxy ever given her? It would make more sense if she was a more synical woman who fends for herself because that is how she grew up her entire life, and her character arc would be to learn to fight for others the more she gets close to them. Because the closer she gets to her new friends, the more likely she'll be to fight for them as they break down her barriers from over the years and make her care for others. THAT would be better characterization of her in my opinion.

And then there's Finn... He's a stormtrooper who deserted the evil stormtrooper group because he no longer wanted to do these evil things. On the surface, that's good character development. REALLY GOOD! And you can do A LOT with that. It would've been interesting to explore his character more. But instead he's rellogated to the role of Rey's body guard. Seriously, everytime he yells "REY! REY! REY!" anytime she gets kidnapped, I want to blow out my ear drums. He is so annoying at times it is laughably bad how much he depends on Rey. But no because "I can't do anything without my master Rey" (a joke quote)

So the characters are poorly written, and don't even get me started on Poe because he felt almost insignificant to the entire movie, he'd be better off left out entirely and instead used in the sequels, like how the OG MC's met new characters in the original movies with every new episode.

I will say now that I think visually the film is great eye candy, and John Williams score is fantastic!

I was just so let down by every other aspect of this movie.

Only redeeming factor are the incredible visuals. The story is truely horrible. Massive massive plot holes. Only watch if there literally nothing else to watch

This seemed like a good start to the sequel trilogy, though it's more of a remake of New Hope with a few things changed.

So why did so many fans like this movie at first? I think the biggest factor was nostalgia. There hasn’t been a proper SW movie since ROTS so hearing the opening theme WILL give all people in the theater strong emotions. There are numerous less than subtle references to the OT throughout the film as well. The whole excitement can be brought to one single point: Wow, I can’t believe we have a new SW movie, this is so amazing! Yeah, as if SW itself doesn’t teach people not to be blinded by their emotions.

I was guilty of this myself, I was so focused on nostalgia at first. But after coming home from the cinema and giving the movie some actual reasonable thought I was really disappointed by how they made it. But I still was willing to see the next they do. Maybe the 8th part will be better. Yeah, about that…

I don't like Finn's character or Rey's character, but John Boyega and Daisy Ridley acted decently well in my opinion. Adam Driver was awesome and the movie had great visuals, but for me it doesn't feel enough.

i seem to be the odd one out. Buti seem to be the odd one out. I loved star wars since i first saw a new hope and read countless books of the extendeds universe, and contrary to fans who dug as deep into the star wars franchise as i did, i do like episode 3 the most. But Episode 4 is the standard for star wars. Episode 7 just rehashes a new hope shamelessly and banks on fans memories and feelings without adding ANYTHING new or noteworthy. This movie is only to be rated above three, as we now know how the follow up movies performed...even worse. The new triology is a slap in the face of every true star wars fan. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Film doesn't deliver on its promises. It is a reboot of Episode IV instead of expanding the Star Wars universe, it reducts it to what we already know too well. The First order is a joke. It is a replica of the Empire, making the victory of Episode VI pointless. A betrayal to the original Star Wars. Expand
