It gives the franchise some amazing twist and turns with Luke being the son of Darth Vader. It brings the franchise to a darker but more emotional level. Empire Strikes Back is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The acting from Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams was stupendous. The voice over performance from Frank Oz was great. The visuals, puppets, and animatronics were gorgeous especially Yoda and R2-D2. The writing, storyline and plot were all done spectacularly. The musical score was amazing just like in the first one. This is my 2nd favorite Star Wars movie and one of my favorite movies of all time. A+ Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Empire is my favorite and most iconic Star Wars. It is done beautifully and there is never a dull moment. I love Han and Leia's relationship, especially the "I love you I know" scene. The music is incredible and always makes me super nostalgic. Yoda, Chewie, C3PO and R2 are some of the best supporting characters of all time. The final fight on Bespin is possibly my favorite scene in Star Wars, period. Overall, I would have to give it a 10.0! Expand

Probably the best Star Wars film period.
A darker tone than the originals. Billy Dee Williams is smooth as Lando, Cloud city looks great and the Emperor makes and brief appearance not to mention the shocker at the end!

But the reason I like the Prequels so much is because of the original trilogy. I love Luke and Darth Vader. So to finally see how Anakin became Darth Vader was incredible to me. To see Darth Vader as Anakin in his prime fighting Dooku was a dream come true. But without the original trilogy I wouldn't give a **** about the prequels. Although I still don't give a **** about Disney Star Wars. If you loved the original trilogy but hated the prequels not sure how you could like any of the Disney Star Wars movies. At least the prequels had a good story with character progression and respected the force. Disney Star Wars is a joke going by their own rules about how the force works. Disney Star Wars creates problems for the Original trilogy and the prequels because of what they did with the force. So I don't count Disney Star Wars as real Star Wars. Expand

Rather than riding the coattails of its successful predecessor while providing a thin story on its own, Episode V thoroughly enriches the universe and story that were built by the previous film. It improves upon the original in many ways, explores new planets and environments, introduces new characters while still properly developing old ones, and isn't afraid to subvert audience expectations in the process.

This film really irons out some of the flaws that were apparent in the original. For one thing, the acting in The Empire Strikes Back is significantly better than that in Star Wars. The main cast really has a greater sense of who their characters are and they effortlessly portray just how far this team of rebels has come on a mental and emotional level. Not only that, but pretty much the entirety of the supporting cast here excels as well. It's far better than that of Episode IV.

The visuals and sound continue to be superb thanks to skillful use of physical sets and models, as well as another auditory marvel of a score from John Williams. The action scenes are also much more impressive this time around; the lightsaber-fighting sequences are much more fleshed-out and there are larger-scale battles both on land and in space.

But more importantly than these technical improvements is what makes the Star Wars saga so endearing: the characters. Episode V takes the story down a much darker road: the Empire is closing in, and it seems that the rebels' winning streak may not be able to carry on much longer. Each character is brought to the lowest point of their lives as every effort they have made thus far seems to be crumbling around them. This bleak situation really brings these people to a crossroads where they must choose to either surrender to "fate" or to endure to the end. And the film takes the time to establish the internal conflicts of each character, making it all the more heart-wrenching when the time comes for them to make hard decisions.

The dialogue is the only aspect of Empire that still leaves much to be desired. It suffers from some lines that are just too cheesy for the otherwise dark tone, as well as others that just feel unnecessary. But still, the second installment in the Star Wars saga is arguably the best one of them all. It takes the galaxy far far away to emotional heights that is has not since been able to replicate. It's the rare sequel that adds necessary depth to the world of original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is one of the greatest films ever created. The use of cinematography and action is just one part of why this movie is critically acclaimed. In my life, I have seen many movies (good and bad), but it is rare to find a sequel that is just as good if not better than the first one. Luke in this movie is the best Luke Skywalker we have seen in any type of media, the way Hamill performs when he is training with Yoda on Dagobah, the way he battles Vader on Cloud City is just a testament to his greatness. There are very little movies that have their B plot just as exciting as their A plot, it is incredible. This movie just gets better with age and it never gets boring. From the beginning scene on Hoth to the final scene with Luke and Leia, it is a joyride, to say the least. 10/10 Expand

Star Wars brought us a galaxy far, far away in a fashion so wonderful and revolutionary it absolutely blew audiences away. Surely they could never top such a movie?
Enter The Empire Strikes back three years later. This is the best made film of the original trilogy and genuinely a masterpiece of cinema.
But why limit oneself to this one? The entire Original Trilogy of Star Wars is an epic tale of an evil empire, underdog heroes and space wizards. Try to catch it in its original, correct theatrical version, and enjoy everything from Han shooting first to Yub Nub and all that happens in between!
Just be ready for the Star Wars experience to take a nose-dive from there if you decide to keep following after Return of the Jedi. Catch the Prequel Trilogy for a ho-hum experience with high highs and low lows, then if you absolutely must, allow Disney to stab you in the heart with the Sequel Trilogy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Vader was broken, Vader was weak relatively to his ROTS self, and yet he still whipped his Son's arse. That shows Vader still had some fight in him when he had a purpose, when he had the anger, or strong emotion necessary to urge him on in the fight. Though of course some of the explanation behind his lack of fight against the barely trained Luke was because he knew he was his son, went easy on him and tested his son's abilities in a risky manner because he loved his son or any close genetically related family members unconditionally like the absolute racist Vader/Anakin is. Although it had it's racist moments, it was meaningful, I related to it and it was deeply tragic and emotional with so much impact on people's lives which really in my opinion had a positive effect overall which is what matters. The film shows it's support of diversity in more subtle ways such as Yoda being the most intelligent creature ever. My favourite scene was when Yoda acted like a retard because it showed that even retards can be geniuses, geniuses who pretend to be retards for the greater good. I loved when Yoda nicked Luke's food and ate what looked like a wookie's willy as that promotes the eating of more creatures to prevent our extinction due to Human overpopulation. I always jerk off at the part Yoda eats the sausage, it shows he's gay and in love with masculine muscular food like a good boy. Expand

'The Empire Strikes Back' follows up on the greatness of 'Star Wars' with a highly enjoyable sequel. This one feels like a big moment in the franchise, at least to someone who doesn't know what's upcoming, as we get sizeable moments alongside some cool character reveals.

Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher continue to impress in their respective roles, as does James Earl Jones. Elsewhere, Billy Dee Williams and Frank Oz make for strong additions. There are, once again, fun roles for Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.

I'd say its predecessor has aged better - though that's not to say this film looks even the slightest bit bad, as it still looks fantastic throughout. The plot is as great as before, as is everything else really - namely the music, for one.

I think I prefer the 1977 film over this, but there's barely anything separating the two in my thoughts to be honest. Both are awesome!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just before the release of Rise of the Skywalker, I had decided to watch every single Star Wars movie so that I could finally understand the memes and also catch up on time. So as I watched The Empire Strikes Back, I was actually really disappointed. Because of how much people speak about it, I was expecting it to be something more than that. But as I grew up, I started appreciating it more and more. Why I hated it earlier and why I like it now, I'll explain it further in the review.

Back when I saw this movie for the first time, I was getting more and more surprised at every scene. I had heard about all the characters like Yoda, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2D2, C3PO etc, but I didn't know what was their deal. I did know Yoda was a green guy who was very skilled, but I didn't know anything else about him. This is the reason why I liked his introduction so much. The problem was, however, that I already knew he was Yoda. So all that acting, I wasn't going to buy it.

Similarly the Darth Vader scene was a huge bummer. The way people used to describe it was as if he removes his mask and says it with an emotional background music. But instead he just simply speaks it out in a claustrophobic environment, with the background music completely quenching the impact. It was in no way as good as everyone described it. I might have liked the scene if I didn't already know about it, which basically shows how this movie suffered from the success it received.

The camera quality has also aged very poorly. I don't know why, but somehow I just can't watch old movies. I get bored and start feeling sleepy very quickly. It happened as I watched Episode IV, it happened as I watched Superman and it happened as I watched The Godfather. I actually slept at the part where Luke is training on Yoda's planet. This is the first movie ever that I watched in two different days. Once as I slept and once after I woke up the next day. And somehow it left such an impact that even today I feel sleepy whenever I watch any Star Wars movie.

With all the bad things said, now let's move on to why I like this movie now. First of all the whole idea of a space opera is so awesome. I have always been very much into astronomy since I was a kid so an entire movie series made around this is something like a dream for me. I can imagine this could also be true for many kids in the 60's and 70's. The CGI is quite awesome for the time. Like I said about the Darth Vader scene or the Yoda scene, they must have looked so cool when they were seen for the first time. The part where Han is embossed rises too much tension, since he's such a likeable character and now he's at stake. If George Lucas went by his multiple movies idea instead of a franchise then this could have been such an awesome take.

I feel really mad at myself that I learnt about all the spoilers from this movie except for Han getting embossed. I wish I could rewatch this after having removed everything I know from my memory. This movie should be re-released in 4K HDR so that I don't fall asleep while watching it again. It is a pinnacle in the Star Wars series and I really hope the franchise can return back to this level.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars blew audiences away in 1977 to universal acclaim, but The Empire Strikes Back, is what I consider the greatest sequel of all time, there is nothing wrong with this film, the Hoth sequence is tense and on the edge of your seat action, Han and Leia's love story is great, Luke's training on Dagobah is very interesting, and Darth Vader and the Empire is all great, now normally the Special Edition ruined the films but this Special Edition isn't bad, which surprised me. This film also has the most stakes, this is all shown in the Luke vs Vader Duel at the end. This duel is terrifying because Luke is fighting for survival. And probably the biggest twist in cinema.... No, I am your Father! Chills, just chills. Remember when I said this was the greatest sequel of all time, well it's not just that, it's the greatest film of all time, I think I've said all I have needed to. Expand

The most artfully done film of the Star Wars universe. I'm a fan of the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy (and have done my best to forget the prequels) but the depth of Empire Strikes Back is unmatched. The Last Jedi would be my second choice.

The screenplayThe Empire Strikes Back really improves A New Hope at almost all levels. Noticeable technological developments, an even better BSO with The Imperial March, and with exciting, appealing storylines for all the protagonists. The screenplay stands on its own and the Luke-Vader relationship and clever dialogues between Solo and Leia take the cake.

It may lack the juvenile essence and pure diversion of Episode IV, but it gains in maturity and drama, which I appreciate.
PD: I'm starting to hate C3PO, I'm sorry.
