And when I heard that the Tel Aviv Cinematheque was doing this event, of screening the films of the original trilogy one after the other, I realized that I had to be at least at the screening of the Empire. There's no way I'm going to miss an opportunity to see this movie for the first time on a big screen. Wow, what an experience that was. First of all, I didn't expect it, but the hall was full of fanatical fans who clapped and cried with excitement at every nonsense, and it warmed my heart, made me cry myself, and upgraded the viewing experience about 1000 times. This film was and remains a temporary masterpiece in everything to do with building characters and the processes they go through, brilliant villain construction, set and scenery design, effects, cinematography, editing, use of colors, everything here is simply above any other film I've seen. And you can still discover something new here every time you watch it again. The real narrative ark of this movie, with all due respect to Luke and his father, is the Millennium Falcon - the whole movie is building for us this moment of the transition to the lightspeed. The whole movie they try - and fail. Something in the first movie in the series was obvious, and once it happens - it's so satisfying, because for two hours you watched a movie whose entire purpose was to struggle to do something they did easily in the first movie. Princess Leia, for example, is always lit in a bright, washed-out white light, due to her being a princess. So many meanings, wisdom, precise and sophisticated cinematic expression. A film that was ahead of its time, that you are easily drawn into and cannot get back out of, and most importantly - show me another film that is able to fill a cinema theater like this today, more than 40 years after it was released. Masterpiece, Masterpiece, Masterpiece! Expand

Darth Vader is a perfect villain, just like in the Episode IV: you never know who he will do next. The relationship between Han Solo and Leia was also funny. It may lack the juvenile essence and pure diversion of Episode IV, but it gains in maturity and drama, which I appreciate.

I feared it wouldn't be my thing, but it was exactly that. I loved the original trilogy for all those reasons. Empire Strikes Back maintains all the fun of its predecessor, while even darker and more mature. Visually it's a marvel to look at, with the stunning special effects and highly imaginative-looking sets. John Williams's score is just outstanding, epic and monumental in every way. The story is darker than that of New Hope and perhaps more sophisticated, and I loved the fact the filmmakers made the romance between Leia and Han more developed. The battle sequences are mesmerising, the beginning is bound to have you on the edge of your seat, but the battle between Luke and Darth Vader was simply out of this world. The script is still as affectionate as ever, the pace is fast and the acting is great. Mark Hamill is ever as likable as Luke, and Carrie Fisher still has her spunk and vivacity. Harrison Ford is noticeably more subdued, but he is still terrific, and Frank Oz is a perfect Yoda. Chewabacca is hilarious, and Darth Vader is a fantastic villain, especially when voiced so magnificently by James Earl Jones. All in all, a perfect successor to an already brilliant first film. 10/10 Bethany Cox Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just before the release of Rise of the Skywalker, I had decided to watch every single Star Wars movie so that I could finally understand the memes and also catch up on time. So as I watched The Empire Strikes Back, I was actually really disappointed. Because of how much people speak about it, I was expecting it to be something more than that. But as I grew up, I started appreciating it more and more. Why I hated it earlier and why I like it now, I'll explain it further in the review.

Back when I saw this movie for the first time, I was getting more and more surprised at every scene. I had heard about all the characters like Yoda, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2D2, C3PO etc, but I didn't know what was their deal. I did know Yoda was a green guy who was very skilled, but I didn't know anything else about him. This is the reason why I liked his introduction so much. The problem was, however, that I already knew he was Yoda. So all that acting, I wasn't going to buy it.

Similarly the Darth Vader scene was a huge bummer. The way people used to describe it was as if he removes his mask and says it with an emotional background music. But instead he just simply speaks it out in a claustrophobic environment, with the background music completely quenching the impact. It was in no way as good as everyone described it. I might have liked the scene if I didn't already know about it, which basically shows how this movie suffered from the success it received.

The camera quality has also aged very poorly. I don't know why, but somehow I just can't watch old movies. I get bored and start feeling sleepy very quickly. It happened as I watched Episode IV, it happened as I watched Superman and it happened as I watched The Godfather. I actually slept at the part where Luke is training on Yoda's planet. This is the first movie ever that I watched in two different days. Once as I slept and once after I woke up the next day. And somehow it left such an impact that even today I feel sleepy whenever I watch any Star Wars movie.

With all the bad things said, now let's move on to why I like this movie now. First of all the whole idea of a space opera is so awesome. I have always been very much into astronomy since I was a kid so an entire movie series made around this is something like a dream for me. I can imagine this could also be true for many kids in the 60's and 70's. The CGI is quite awesome for the time. Like I said about the Darth Vader scene or the Yoda scene, they must have looked so cool when they were seen for the first time. The part where Han is embossed rises too much tension, since he's such a likeable character and now he's at stake. If George Lucas went by his multiple movies idea instead of a franchise then this could have been such an awesome take.

I feel really mad at myself that I learnt about all the spoilers from this movie except for Han getting embossed. I wish I could rewatch this after having removed everything I know from my memory. This movie should be re-released in 4K HDR so that I don't fall asleep while watching it again. It is a pinnacle in the Star Wars series and I really hope the franchise can return back to this level.

Such a great film. It is brilliantly written, acted and made. The soundtrack is outstanding and the characters are amazing too. It also has quite possibly the best plot twist of any film to date.

Terrific, again.

'The Empire Strikes Back' follows up on the greatness of 'Star Wars' with a highly enjoyable sequel. This one feels like a big moment in the franchise, at least to someone who doesn't know what's upcoming, as we get sizeable moments alongside some cool character reveals.

Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher continue to impress in their respective roles, as does James Earl Jones. Elsewhere, Billy Dee Williams and Frank Oz make for strong additions. There are, once again, fun roles for Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.

I'd say its predecessor has aged better - though that's not to say this film looks even the slightest bit bad, as it still looks fantastic throughout. The plot is as great as before, as is everything else really - namely the music, for one.

I think I prefer the 1977 film over this, but there's barely anything separating the two in my thoughts to be honest. Both are awesome!

Far more character development and more emotive than the original but brilliantly done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars blew audiences away in 1977 to universal acclaim, but The Empire Strikes Back, is what I consider the greatest sequel of all time, there is nothing wrong with this film, the Hoth sequence is tense and on the edge of your seat action, Han and Leia's love story is great, Luke's training on Dagobah is very interesting, and Darth Vader and the Empire is all great, now normally the Special Edition ruined the films but this Special Edition isn't bad, which surprised me. This film also has the most stakes, this is all shown in the Luke vs Vader Duel at the end. This duel is terrifying because Luke is fighting for survival. And probably the biggest twist in cinema.... No, I am your Father! Chills, just chills. Remember when I said this was the greatest sequel of all time, well it's not just that, it's the greatest film of all time, I think I've said all I have needed to. Expand

It's honestly so beautiful watching this movie on the big screen and after 40 years this movie holds up very well, it's so good.

The Empire Strikes Back is probably the best Star Wars movie ever and it's honestly a masterpiece and a half.
It's honestly so beautiful watching this movie on the big screen and after 40 years this movie holds up very well, it's so good.

The Empire Strikes Back is probably the best Star Wars movie ever and it's honestly a masterpiece and a half.

The movie's got a brilliant plot, which pretty much follows on from the New Hope. It's pretty much about Darth Vader (David Prowse) making Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamil) turn to the dark side.

So, Yoda (Frank Oz) trains Luke to be a jedi knight so he doesn't turn to the dark side.

While Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and RD-D2 (Kenny Baker) try to escape from the imperial fleet before it's too late.

We later get introduced to a new character called Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), who's the owner of Cloud City and who's also good old friends with Han Solo, we get to see more of his character throughout this movie.

Also, the acting from all the actors/actresses are all honestly amazing and they all do a great job in their roles throughout this brilliant movie. There's even a lot of heart and soul with these characters throughout this movie, especially with Yoda. He's got some great quotes which are very inspirational and a lot of them are very memorable.

The love and hate relationship, which Han Solo and Princess Leia have got throughout this movie is honestly beautifully shown and it's very great.

The dialogue which is given from all the characters throughout this movie is all honestly great.

There's so many great comedy moments throughout this movie, either that being a scene where Han Solo and Leia are flirting with each other or it being a scene with Yoda, Luke and R2-D2 being hilarious.

I even love how we get to see little sneak peaks to what Darth Vader looks like underneath the helmet throughout this movie, it's honestly brilliant.

Finally, the pacing which this movie's got is honestly so good and it's so great for the build ups for certain moments.

The cinematography which was shot by Peter Suschitzky is honestly beautiful and he's done a beautiful job on capturing the scenes so well.

The score which was composed by the man, the myth and the legend John Williams is honestly so beautiful. It works so well with the scenes it's been placed with, he's honestly the best at composing some of the greatest scores for the greatest movies ever.

The action scenes are all honestly great, especially that last one, that one's got some beautiful choreography in it and the music which was composed by John Williams goes so well with it.

Overall, The Empire Strikes Back is honestly a masterpiece and a half and it's the best Star Wars movie to this day. The movie's got a brilliant plot, amazing acting from all the cast and it's even got some great dialogue from all of the characters. It's even got some great humour which works very well, some very good pacing, some very inspirational and very funny quotes. There's even some beautiful cinematography, a beautiful soundtrack which was composed by the legend John Williams and some very great action scenes. I'd honestly recommend to watch this one straight after you've watched A New Hope, it's honestly worth the watch.

A perfect sequel, a terrific middle chapter in a terrific trilogy. However, the push to declare it as the undisputed pinnacle of the entire Star Wars project is frustrating. A New Hope is always going to be the most iconic, the most cherished, the film that will last forever. Revenge of the Sith still bests Empire for dramatic intensity and darkness. And personal tastes must dictate that any of the other movies in the saga could hold favor over it. Expand

I really think of the issues that I have with this film is: I really think Irvin Kershner should have fix some stuff that could have been might improve it to be better such as have a scene where Stormtroopers shooting citizens at Cloud City that makes them more threatening, the asteroid scene pacing needs to be better, needs space battles, Luke and Darth Vader fight scene needs to be better, I think Darth Vader should done a dog fight with Han Solo in space instead of being chased down by Tie Fighters, I wished Luke's partner needs more screen time and development for Luke for the Battle of Hoth, have Boba Fett shoot someone, I think maybe have a scene of Yoda mentioned about what happened during at the Jedi Order and his mother to Luke, I think the Wampa scene should have Luke not harm it like Mark Hamill wanted, and maybe have the other Bounty Hunters have more screen time as well. The rebels have beaten and humiliated the empire. Now they are out for revenge and want to crush them as soon and merciless as possible. Also the movie has one of the best and probably most famous plot twist of all times. With the prequels you have the problem in which order you should watch them. I present you the ideal solution: “Absolutely no Machete Juggling” by Rod Hilton. He suggests that to get most out of the movies and to avoid spoilers you should watch the movies in the order 4, 5, 2, 3 and 6. Episode 1 is missing because nothing really matters for both trilogies. It is also explained there and I agree with his reasons. Back to Empire Strikes Back. You got good fight scenes with one of the most engaging duels in movie history and good story arcs. I don't need to introduce the characters. If you don't know them you must be an actual alien from outer space and new to this world. Beware of the Man in Black;-). The acting is really good and the actors deliver their roles and got a good amount of character development. Han and Leia are a couple for the ages ;-). I think I can not say anything more that others have said about this movie. While I will say that the other movies are rated higher because of our nostalgia and childhood memories this movie could stand on its own. Overall one of the all time classics and a must see. Expand
