This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Vader was broken, Vader was weak relatively to his ROTS self, and yet he still whipped his Son's arse. That shows Vader still had some fight in him when he had a purpose, when he had the anger, or strong emotion necessary to urge him on in the fight. Though of course some of the explanation behind his lack of fight against the barely trained Luke was because he knew he was his son, went easy on him and tested his son's abilities in a risky manner because he loved his son or any close genetically related family members unconditionally like the absolute racist Vader/Anakin is. Although it had it's racist moments, it was meaningful, I related to it and it was deeply tragic and emotional with so much impact on people's lives which really in my opinion had a positive effect overall which is what matters. The film shows it's support of diversity in more subtle ways such as Yoda being the most intelligent creature ever. My favourite scene was when Yoda acted like a retard because it showed that even retards can be geniuses, geniuses who pretend to be retards for the greater good. I loved when Yoda nicked Luke's food and ate what looked like a wookie's willy as that promotes the eating of more creatures to prevent our extinction due to Human overpopulation. I always jerk off at the part Yoda eats the sausage, it shows he's gay and in love with masculine muscular food like a good boy. Expand

But the reason I like the Prequels so much is because of the original trilogy. I love Luke and Darth Vader. So to finally see how Anakin became Darth Vader was incredible to me. To see Darth Vader as Anakin in his prime fighting Dooku was a dream come true. But without the original trilogy I wouldn't give a **** about the prequels. Although I still don't give a **** about Disney Star Wars. If you loved the original trilogy but hated the prequels not sure how you could like any of the Disney Star Wars movies. At least the prequels had a good story with character progression and respected the force. Disney Star Wars is a joke going by their own rules about how the force works. Disney Star Wars creates problems for the Original trilogy and the prequels because of what they did with the force. So I don't count Disney Star Wars as real Star Wars. Expand

Builds on everything that made the first movie great.

non stop relentless action and story.

Really need to watch all three movies to completely appreciate this movie as it kind of starts out of nowhere and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Star Wars brought us a galaxy far, far away in a fashion so wonderful and revolutionary it absolutely blew audiences away. Surely they could never top such a movie?
Enter The Empire Strikes back three years later. This is the best made film of the original trilogy and genuinely a masterpiece of cinema.
But why limit oneself to this one? The entire Original Trilogy of Star Wars is an epic tale of an evil empire, underdog heroes and space wizards. Try to catch it in its original, correct theatrical version, and enjoy everything from Han shooting first to Yub Nub and all that happens in between!
Just be ready for the Star Wars experience to take a nose-dive from there if you decide to keep following after Return of the Jedi. Catch the Prequel Trilogy for a ho-hum experience with high highs and low lows, then if you absolutely must, allow Disney to stab you in the heart with the Sequel Trilogy.

You take the solid, commercially-successful plot of Episode IV and then add so much character development and depth with every scene, lots of darkness, lots of heightening of the stakes and you end up with a masterpiece in cinematic history. The perfect combination of entertainment value and artistic and sci-fi value. This, to me, is really what pushed Star Wars from being, "just a fun, summer action flick" into being something much more. This is what made Star Wars into the Sci-Fi Opera. There is complete and refined focus on every detail, and it all flows perfectly together. We have yet to see any other Star Wars film come remotely close to the emotional intensity and story-telling masterpiece of Episode V. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is one of the greatest films ever created. The use of cinematography and action is just one part of why this movie is critically acclaimed. In my life, I have seen many movies (good and bad), but it is rare to find a sequel that is just as good if not better than the first one. Luke in this movie is the best Luke Skywalker we have seen in any type of media, the way Hamill performs when he is training with Yoda on Dagobah, the way he battles Vader on Cloud City is just a testament to his greatness. There are very little movies that have their B plot just as exciting as their A plot, it is incredible. This movie just gets better with age and it never gets boring. From the beginning scene on Hoth to the final scene with Luke and Leia, it is a joyride, to say the least. 10/10 Expand

Rather than riding the coattails of its successful predecessor while providing a thin story on its own, Episode V thoroughly enriches the universe and story that were built by the previous film. It improves upon the original in many ways, explores new planets and environments, introduces new characters while still properly developing old ones, and isn't afraid to subvert audience expectations in the process.

This film really irons out some of the flaws that were apparent in the original. For one thing, the acting in The Empire Strikes Back is significantly better than that in Star Wars. The main cast really has a greater sense of who their characters are and they effortlessly portray just how far this team of rebels has come on a mental and emotional level. Not only that, but pretty much the entirety of the supporting cast here excels as well. It's far better than that of Episode IV.

The visuals and sound continue to be superb thanks to skillful use of physical sets and models, as well as another auditory marvel of a score from John Williams. The action scenes are also much more impressive this time around; the lightsaber-fighting sequences are much more fleshed-out and there are larger-scale battles both on land and in space.

But more importantly than these technical improvements is what makes the Star Wars saga so endearing: the characters. Episode V takes the story down a much darker road: the Empire is closing in, and it seems that the rebels' winning streak may not be able to carry on much longer. Each character is brought to the lowest point of their lives as every effort they have made thus far seems to be crumbling around them. This bleak situation really brings these people to a crossroads where they must choose to either surrender to "fate" or to endure to the end. And the film takes the time to establish the internal conflicts of each character, making it all the more heart-wrenching when the time comes for them to make hard decisions.

The dialogue is the only aspect of Empire that still leaves much to be desired. It suffers from some lines that are just too cheesy for the otherwise dark tone, as well as others that just feel unnecessary. But still, the second installment in the Star Wars saga is arguably the best one of them all. It takes the galaxy far far away to emotional heights that is has not since been able to replicate. It's the rare sequel that adds necessary depth to the world of original.

The war between the rebels and the Empire continues, while Darth Vader Luke demand throughout the galaxy. Directed by Irvin Kershner and written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, this film has the participation of the same actors from the first film.

The film inherits most of the qualities of his predecessor. It has a carefully chosen cast and consistent performances, with some emphasis on the work of Harrison Ford, actor who was already highlighted in the first film and now consolidates his success. Action scenes are excellent, thought of meticulous way and the fight scenes with lightsaber remind us some great duels of piracy and swashbuckling films. The special visual and sound effects are the best that existed at the time and fulfill their role with great merit. The only difference between this film and the latest films of the saga is, in fact, this technical issue, given the huge advance that, in a few decades, the techniques and special effects achieved. The soundtrack was again in charge of John Williams, which continues the excellent work started in the first film of the saga. In fact, the first main theme of the chords of the saga became one of the songs that instinctively comes to mind of people when they think of film music, the same way as the "March of Darth Vader" has become one of most songs instinctively associated with the image of any movie villain. The point of greatest merit of this movie is the script. It is a deeper script, more psychological and intense than the script of the first film, and this contributed decisively to the success of it, and the franchise itself. Oscar winner for Best Sound, is one of the most popular films of the saga in the present day.

Probably the best Star Wars film period.
A darker tone than the originals. Billy Dee Williams is smooth as Lando, Cloud city looks great and the Emperor makes and brief appearance not to mention the shocker at the end!

SKIP TO THE END FOR REVIEW SUMMARY.

It's very rare that a sequel manages to match or even best its predecessor. Empire Strikes Back managed to break that trend.

Empire Strikes Back is, in every way, more compelling, emotionally involved, and dramatic than A New Hope. We get to see each character develop and face new struggles. I would argue that there is no standout actor in this movie. Each one is equal in their ability and serves their character well. Though, of course, James Earl Jones' Darth Vader must be mentioned. If there was another voice coming through the mask, he wouldn't be nearly as memorable.

Though I'm normally not a fan of slow starts, this one works in the film's favor. After several important character moments, we get to see an epic ground battle followed by an intense space chase through asteroids. Luke goes on a different path from Han and Leia in this film as he trains with the wise and interesting Master Yoda. Han and Leia have their own struggles as they deal with the foreboding Empire, which is at its best in this part of the trilogy. The movie really starts to shine as the climax draws nearer. Luke and Vader's confrontation, Han and Leia's romance, and Cloud City itself are simply amazing. The Empire Strikes Back's mastery is by no means exaggerated (even if it does mean the other films in the series don't get their deserved praise) and easily one of the best and most gripping installments of Star Wars.

Review redone ahead of The Last Jedi.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Empire is my favorite and most iconic Star Wars. It is done beautifully and there is never a dull moment. I love Han and Leia's relationship, especially the "I love you I know" scene. The music is incredible and always makes me super nostalgic. Yoda, Chewie, C3PO and R2 are some of the best supporting characters of all time. The final fight on Bespin is possibly my favorite scene in Star Wars, period. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The empire strikes back is the archetype of a perfect movie sequel. It not only flawlessly continues the compelling story of "Star wars", but gives the old characters much more depth, introduces several new iconic characters like Yoda, Boba Fett and Lando Calrissian, and marks Darth Vader as the greatest movie villain of all time. The new soundtrack is absolutely beautiful, the lightsaber duel is much better choreographed than its predecessor and the battle of Hoth remains a feast for eyes, regarding special effects, to this day. The darker tone of this film, the probably best-known and biggest plot twist ever and the evil Darth Vader (masterfully spoken by James Earl Jones) make "The empire strikes back" the best entry of our beloved franchise and, in my opinion, the greatest movie of all time! The greatest thing about Empire Strikes Back is either its world-known plot twist or its special effects. The special effects were absolutely groundbreaking at the time and has aged surprisingly well considering the methods such as stop-motion and puppets. For example, the AT-ATs were the best example of stop-motion effects because it added to the fact that they're robots and they're supposed to move that way. Also, Yoda is the greatest example of a puppet creature in a movie because of the great design that almost convinced me it was real. Definitely worth a watch and deserves a higher meta score from the critics. Expand

The storyline is more interesting and ambitious, the characters -- little more than appealing types in the original -- are allowed to grow and develop, the special effects are more mature, and the tone is deliciously dark and downbeat. It's the latter quality that has made The Empire Strikes Back the least favorite among young Star Wars fans -- excepting Yoda, there's nothing cute to be found, and the film definitely doesn't leave viewers with a warm, fuzzy feeling. In the first film, good triumphed decisively over evil; here, it's almost the other way around.

For the Special Edition, Lucas has chosen to do considerably less re-engineering than he did with Star Wars, which is evidence that Empire, as originally presented, was close to his vision. The soundtrack has been digitally beefed up, a few new scenes have been inserted (including some extended shots of the Wampa ice creature's attack), and certain effects sequences have been noticably enhanced (the Millenium Falcon's approach to the Cloud City being the most obvious). In general, however, the changes to Empire are less obvious than those to Star Wars, which were subtle enough in their own right. There's nothing in the Special Edition that changes the scope, quality, or intent of the film. It's a little bigger, a little brighter, and a little louder.

The defining moment of The Empire Strikes Back occurs in the final fifteen minutes, and, during screenings in 1980 (before the nature of the secret became public knowledge), one particular scene provoked collective gasps. In terms of the mythological antecedents that Lucas based much of his Star Wars trilogy on, there was nothing startling about Vader's origins, but, considering the darkness it would inevitably inject into the series, it was a bold stroke. The scenes that begin with the Luke/Vader lightsaber duel and end with the young hero's despairing decision to allow himself to plummet out of Vader's reach represent the most compelling sequence offered by any of the three movies.

The structure of The Empire Strikes Back is more complex than the relatively linear path traversed by Star Wars. Instead of keeping the heroes together, as was the case in the first film, Lucas, along with director Irvin Kershner and screenwriters Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, elects to split them up. As a result, we have Han and Leia fleeing through asteroid fields, flying headlong at Star Destroyers, and facing betrayal in the Cloud City, while Luke fights Imperial Walkers and trains to become a Jedi. Everything comes together at the end, and there's a reunion of sorts, but The Empire Strikes Back concludes with so many unanswered questions that it's tantamount to a cliffhanger.

The visual effects in The Empire Strikes Back are far more impressive than those of Star Wars. From the approach of the imposing Imperial Walkers to the escape from the Cloud City, there's a lot here to delight the eye. Likewise, John Williams' score, which uses multiple cues from Star Wars, displays the richness and maturity necessary for a darker, more operatic motion picture. "The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)" is the standout new track, giving a unique musical sound to the chief villain.

Seventeen years after its intial release, The Empire Strikes Back is still as thrilling and involving as ever. Because of the high quality of the original product, it doesn't show a hint of dating. Neither the first nor the third chapters (or, properly, the "fourth" and "sixth") of the Star Wars saga were able to match the narrative scope of Empire, which today remains one of the finest and most rousing science fiction tales ever committed to the screen.

Not a sequel as such, but the next part of a continuing story, Empire marks enormous progression both in terms of the mythos of the series and in the filmmaking quality itself.

No longer tethered by the need to establish this fabulous universe wrapped in the arcane mysticism of the Force, this is a film far more sophisticated, awe-inspiring and daring (what do you mean Han Solo stays frozen in carbonite?). The actors too, reassured this was not some tinpot sci-fi quickie, have settled comfortably into their characters. Which is a good thing given the nightmare wrought for them by writers Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan and Leigh Brackett. At once more graceful and melancholic than its predecessor, Kershner enhances the pensive mood of impending tragedy with an array of inhospitable worlds (we travel from the icescape of Hoth to the swamp of Dagobah to a sleek, sterile city in the clouds). Bespin, the Cloud City, the most awesome of any of the Star Wars arenas, is a beautiful exterior with a dark heart. The film culminates in a whirl of emotional intensity and the infernal machine of the carbon freezing chamber. With John Williams' breathtaking score and the dark red hellish lighting (the characters have arrived in Hell — this being the "second day" of the trilogy), the whole feel is of a Wagnerian opera: dark and epic.

Then there is the devastating confrontation between Luke and Vader. Masterfully choreographed, their duel culminates on a thin gantry
protruding out over the vast depths that are the hollow core of the Cloud City. Magnificently visualised, the dizzying vertiginous terror of the moment encapsulating Luke's disorientation and horror at Vader's revelation of paternalism. Significantly, Luke chooses death over the outstretched hand of the dark side and is eventully born again as a Jedi.

But Act 2 is never consumed by darkness. There is comedy: C-3PO is still fussily camp as the Shakespearean chorus; Solo cracks wiser than ever before and new entry Yoda's knack of getting straight-to-the-point via the syntactical equivalent of Spaghetti Junction ("No! Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.") is pure delight. And effectswise it offers unforgettable, if sometimes impractical, marvels: the awesome AT-ATs marching on the rebel base on Hoth, whose lurching gait was modelled on elephants, or Solo piloting the Milennium Falcon straight into an asteroid field.

It is on a psychological level, though, where Empire really reaches beyond its brethren. On Dagobah, where Luke is tutored in Jedi philosophy by the rubbery icon-to-be Yoda, the notion of the Force turns from the simple good/bad divide of Star Wars into a sea of moral ambiguity. Luke must fight the urges of anger and emotion to find the true path (a factor which left much of The Phantom Menace so limp — the Jedi characters were by definition unexciting). In the film's (and probably the series') most complex sequence Luke descends into a metaphorical dream womb, a representation of his unacknowledged fears. Here, prophetically, he confronts Darth Vader and discovers his own face beneath the mask. This is dark stuff, way beyond funny robots and knights in space.

Empire slipped the insufficient Return Of The Jedi a hospital pass. There was too much to settle (the whole damn universe to be saved before tea), and we had been so exhilarated by Empire that teddy bears at war was inevitably trite.

Nothing in the Star Wars canon betters this.

The development of the characters we grew to love from the original was enhanced by great writing and acting, and new characters were all inventively placed and directed. What sets this apart from the previous episode was it's overriding plot which is much more interesting, layered and emotional than the original.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's perhaps a little too over-run with action, but that's only a minor issue
VERDICT: One of the best sequels ever made, 'Episode 5' builds on everything from it's predecessor to bring an even more epic character adventure.
