If I had to sum it up in one word, superlative would be my answer. I saw the film for the first time three months ago and loved it, and since then I have watched all the Star Wars movies. I was disappointed with the prequels (Attack of the Clones was my least favourite), but this, Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back were perfection.

I have to say that the film looks absolutely amazing even after thirty plus years, with highly imaginative sets and dazzling special effects. And the action sequences were superbly choreographed and brisk, the Death Star climax was a knockout. The music by John Williams is absolutely outstanding, by far one of his more exciting and rousing scores. The story is fast-paced, intelligent and has an essence of sophistication, and the screenplay is sharp and decisive.

And the performances were flawless. In the prequels I had problems relating to some of the performers, namely Hayden Christensen as Anakin. Here, all the actors played their parts with superlative skill. Alec Guiness, one fine actor and will be sorely missed was a standout, likewise with Peter Cushing and Harrison Ford(hilarious here). Carrie Fisher was a fine Princess Leia, spunky, beautiful and sexy, and Mark Hamill was a completely likable Luke. And the villain Darth Vader, without doubt one of the best and in-depth villains in cinematic history, and James Earl Jones's deep booming voice was perfect for the character.

All in all, a definite sci-fi classic, that blew me away. 10/10 Bethany Cox

At that time, sci-fi movies were really B grade movies so this was really something. Siskel and Ebert gave it 2 thumbs down and I think this led them to change how they rated movies. A great movie needs a great villain and I give you Darth Vader, master of the dark side of the force. His mentor Obi Wan teaches young Luke to choose the right path, to avoid the dark forces. Hmmm, sounds like good parenting. The Empire has a planet destroying weapon so the good guys have to stop them. For those of us old enough to have seen this in the first run, there was no "Episode IV" in the title. After making mega bucks, George Lucas says "oh yeah, we wrote 9 episodes but the others were too boring." Now that we are up to number 7, who's kidding who? I have this DVD in my collection. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An incredible opening for the original Star Wars trilogy, A New Hope raised the bar for it's time when it comes to action and special effects. I certainly like this movie's story. It's a lot of fun, it's packed with incredible characters and the action is very cool. Han Solo steals the show in this movie, by being really entertaining and funny. Luke Skywalker is also a very good character, with charisma and with a charming personality. Leia is a fun, hot and badass female character. And, also, Vader (Anakin), the guy that I hate the most for being such an evil human being in Episode III, shines in this movie with his dark and enigmatic image. Obi One is one of my favorite, who is wise and awesome in this movie. So, A New Hope is fantastic and a masterpiece that everyone should watch and enjoy. Expand

Close your eyes, concentrate hard, rewind those famous scrolling credits until there's just blackness. Good. Back in that dark, pre-enlightenment age, 20th Century Fox conducted some market research on their forthcoming sci-fi adventure.

Researchers armed only with a title and brief synopsis came back with some worrying results: only males under 25 expressed a desire to see a film called Star Wars. As a direct result of this research, Star Wars was deliberately packaged to attract older and female cinemagoers: the humans were pushed centre-stage and the film's epic, fairy-tale qualities were emphasised in the publicity material. When Star Wars came out in the summer of 1977 it had been focus-grouped, and to great effect — everybody went to see it.

By November, it had dethroned Jaws in the all-time box office charts, a position it held until Independence Day. Blimey, even the novelisation sold two million copies, and let's not get started on the merchandising. So what happened? After all, nobody's attributing Star Wars' epoch-making, culture-shifting success to a wily decision to put Princess Leia on the posters. The answer is timing.

The 1970s, Hollywood's second golden age, were characterised by baby-boomer film students making pictures personal and dark enough to reflect the political morass of post-Watergate, in-Vietnam America. Though The Exorcist and Jaws are credited with kicking down the doors of the Blockbuster Age, these were not family films. Star Wars was. George Lucas, feted after American Graffiti had made $55 million off a $1.2 million budget, started writing his moralistic space opera in 1973. He worked on the script for two and a half years in a back room containing a Wurlitzer jukebox and a portrait of Sergei Eisenstein, during which he could never remember how he spelt all those crazy names (Wookiee was different every time he wrote it). It's said that he based maverick Han Solo (bearded, originally) on his pal Francis Coppola and Darth Vader on Richard Nixon.

Influenced by Joseph Campbell's writings on the power of ancient mythology, Lucas created a cosmic Western, the "black hats" replaced by Vader and the evil Empire, and the "white hats" by farmboy Luke Sky walker (Solo was the equivalent of the drunken gunslinger). Lucas' movie brat mates thought he was nuts, and indeed, by the end of a tortuously difficult shoot at Elstree Studios, he very nearly was.

Meanwhile, in an old warehouse near Van Nuys airport, the newborn Industrial Light And Magic had spent $5 million of the $9.5 million budget and not produced a single usable effects shot in one year of working. Of course when they did, ILM redefined movie effects as sure as the finished film would redefine the experience of "going to the pictures ". We all know why Lucas felt the need to digitally tidy up his original trilogy for the great, money-hoovering 1997 reissue, but it set a worrying precedent for The Phantom Menace, where too much technology smothered characterisation and story.

Star Wars' timeless appeal lies in its easily identified, universal archetypes — goodies to root for, baddies to boo, a princess to be rescued and so on — and if it is most obviously dated to the 70s by the special effects, so be it. We all love the stormtrooper banging his head! To remove that digitally would be a crime. Mark Hamill said he felt "like a raisin in a giant fruit salad" when making Star Wars; 20 years later, Liam Neeson almost retired from screen acting after his experiences on The Phantom Menace. But George Lucas does not make actors' films — his interest is in the Star Wars myth, not the cult of some Hollywood star.

Isn't it ironic then, that Star Wars remains a rewatchable classic because of the characters and the performances behind them (especially Ford, Fisher, and James Earl Jones). Sure, you can **** at R2-D2 trundling along the sand like a wheelie-bin, but his signature beeps and clucks are as essential to the personality and momentum of the film as the rousing John Williams score. Just as it's hard to remember what cinema was like before Star Wars, it's impossible to view the original film in isolation now. In 1977, it was not Episode IV, it was a self-contained pleasure that made it okay again to cheer at the screen.

A product of its time, certainly, but like the myths that informed it, Star Wars will outlive the lot of us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original Star Wars is not something you can talk about without saying it was great, in fact it one of the best films ever. In my opinion it's the best Star Wars film. Easily in my top five, but is it the best movie. I'm afraid not. Most people overlook the films flaws because because of nostalgia. Some of the scenes would be removed and it wouldn't effect the movie in anyway, and I can't be the only one to think that C-3P0 and R2-D2 both being captured by the Jawa's and meeting each other again after storming off in two sides of the desert. Maybe it's just nitpicking, but I can't overlook it. Still a great film that should be preserved, so future generations can see it. Expand

Originally conceived as a serialized popcorn fest, Star Wars surpassed even George's keen and bombastic imagination to become a central part of movie history. My point here is that Star Wars is a classic even to people who don't know Pulp Fiction from Twilight. It has everything you could possibly want: action, romance, midgets, quotable dialogue, and a reminiscent score by John Williams. Star Wars is the definition of success.

Originally called simply "Star Wars" is a beautiful mix of fairy tale, western tale and above all - an epic tale about good versus evil. A combination that in theory sounds silly and bizarre (which is partially true), was done seamlessly and what's more important - imposingly, taking under consideration the history of production from the very beginning. With addition of fun cast, now legendary soundtrack, groundbreaking visual effects and non-stop action, one of the greatest movies of all time is right in front of you. There were more complicated plots in the history of Cinema, therefore the movie is not demanding. Two fractions fighting each other - each has their leaders, but one of them has constructed a weapon so powerful, that is immediately on the winning point and therefore, it becomes a space menace. Nevertheless, every menace has its weak points - and this is the key plot device, the plans of ultimate weapons that hopefully will reveal its weak point, allowing for immediate attack and destruction. Our MacGuffin lands on rather boring planet - right in the hands of or young protagonist who yearns of adventure. Now, having precious plans in his possession, he has a perfect opportunity to start his journey. But soon he will realize that he is only standing on top of an iceberg. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie that started it all, A New Hope is a masterpiece. Luke, a moisture farmer, yearns for a life outside of Tatooine. His character is relatable, even though he is in a galaxy far far away. Old Ben, Leia, Han, and Chewie make for an amazing array of awesome characters who are unforgettable. The duel between Vader and Ben isn't spectacular but it filled with emotion. The music is what makes A New Hope great and it contains my favorite score of all time 'Binary Sunset.' The whole movie has its very small flaws, but it's a movie that I will be watching till the day I die. That being said, I would give it a 9.6. Expand

He starts his journey and Ben Kenobi gives him his fathers lightsaber. It's the beginning of a great story. Darth Vader was awesome in this movie. And overall it's my favourite Star Wars movie from the original trilogy. I grew up with the prequels and like The Phantom Menace and Attack of the close a little bit more but I gave those movies a 8/10 too. Revenge of the Sith I gave a 7/10. But the reason I like the Prequels so much is because of the original trilogy. I love Luke and Darth Vader. So to finally see how Anakin became Darth Vader was incredible to me. To see Darth Vader as Anakin in his prime fighting Dooku was a dream come true because of this movie. Without the original trilogy I wouldn't give a **** about the prequels. Although I still don't give a **** about Disney Star Wars. If you loved the original trilogy but hated the prequels not sure how you could like any of the Disney Star Wars movies. At least the prequels had a good story with character progression and respected the force. Disney Star Wars is a joke going by their own rules about how the force works. Disney Star Wars creates problems for the Original trilogy and the prequels because of what they did with the force. So I don't count Disney Star Wars as real Star Wars. Expand

Directed and written by George Lucas, this film has the participation of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness and David Prowse.

This film marks a before and an after in the sci fi. It's essential in this film genre, becoming, thanks to an imperishable popularity, a cinema icon, given the social and cultural importance that it has acquired over the decades. With an audience always faithful and unconditional admirers, the Star Wars saga continues to this day to impress and captivate. The actors were always excellent in their roles, the director/writer is one of the biggest sci-fi genius, the script is very good and the story has no dead moments: it's an intergalactic adventure that only stops at the end. No doubt that this film is excellent, it is a work of art. However, it seems that the latest audiences have more difficulty in enjoy this film, given the lack of the colorful and vividness of the actual computerized effects and cinematography. They have to understand that this film has been done in a given period, with all the available techniques at the time. And if they understand this well, they're more easily able to admire it. In fact, although the picture is quite different from what we are used to actually, it's still very well done. The special, visual and sound effects have always been good, and leave us amazed to think it's a movie with more than thirty years. The soundtrack is something that makes our hearts pounding. John Williams did an extraordinary job and managed to catapult himself to stardom, with great and deserved merit. I only have one bad comment to do: some of the effects and scenes, such as explosions and fire in the middle of outer space, where there is no oxygen, are scientifically impossible, and this should have been predicted by the production team before the film release. But this kind of errors are endemic in sci-fi.

This film won the Oscar for Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Soundtrack, which shows the quality of the work developed here. Definitely, despite some wrinkles, this film is like a well-dressed and made up lady, looking younger than it really is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Plot: The Film Focuses On A Farmboy Named Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) On Tatooine Who Lives With His Foster Aunt And Uncle. Luke Is Bored With Life And Hopes To Become Part Of The Rebel Alliance Against The Galactic Empire To Bring Peace And Justice To The Galaxy. One Day He Discovers That His Aunt And Uncle Have Been Murdered. He Meets A Jedi Knight Named Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) Who Tells Him His Father Was A Jedi Murdered By The Evil Sith Lord Darth Vader (James Earl Jones/David Prowse) And Trains Luke In The Ways Of The Force And One Day Become A Jedi Like His Father. Along They Way He Meets A Smuggler Named Han Solo (Harrison Ford), A Wookie Named Chewbacca And Two Droids Named C-3P0 And R2-D2 To Rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fischer) From The Clutches From The Empire. As The Film Progresses Luke Becomes A Part Of The Rebellion And Must Destroy The Death Star As Their First Step Of Overthrowing The Empire. This Film Is Fantastic And Is Very Inspirational To Me, While I Do Love This Film, However Out Of The Original Trilogy It Is My Least Favorite Of The Original Trilogy.

Acting/Characters: The Acting In This Film Is Not The Strongest In The Film, But The Actors Do A Great Job And The Characters Really Make Their Performances Work. Luke Skywalker May Be A Bit Of A Boy Scout, But Mark Hamill’s Performance Makes The Character Work And Makes You Care About Him And Wish For Him To Succeed. Alec Guinness Does A Terrific Job As Obi-Wan Kenobi. He’s Likable, Wise And Everything A Jedi Knight Should Be. Harrison Ford As Han Solo Is Awesome And He’s My Favorite Hero In The Film. He’s So Bad Ass And He’s Very Unique From Your Typical Hero. Carrie Fisher Plays The Not-So Damsle In Distress Princess Leia. This A Good Example Of A Strong Female Led Done Right. She’s Independent, Hot, Well Written Character And A Bad Ass. Then We Get To Darth Vader Himself. James Earl Jones IS Darth Vader And It Will Be VERY Hard To Replace Him. He’s Menacing, Cool, Bad-Ass And Not A Guy You Wanna Piss Off. Peter Cushing Also Does A Solid Job As Grand Moff Tarkin. A Slimy **** Villain You’d Like To See Get What’s Coming To Him.

Writing: While The Film Is Well Written Don’t Get Me Wrong, But It’s Definitely The Weakest Of The Three Films And It’s Not As Strong Empire Strikes Back And Return of The Jedi. Some Of The Dialogue Comes As Corny And You Can Tell It’s Lucas Dialogue At Times. However It’s Not Cringy And It Works.
Action Sequences: The Actions Aren’t As Good As Empire Strikes Back Or Return of The Jedi, But They Are Still Very Entertaining For The Most Part. However The Lightsaber Fight Between Obi-Wan Kenobi And Darth Vader Is Terrible. While Not The Worst Lightsaber Fight In The Franchise, But It’s Very Lame And It’s Not Very Realistic. However I Think Obi-Wan Dies At The Hands Of Vader It Actually Makes It Work And Makes It Heartbreaking. Special Effects: Most Of The Special Effects Still Looks Great, And Still Holds Up Really Well. However Some of Them Are Kinda **** Don’t Hold Up Really Well.
Overall Opinion: Even Though It’s My Least Favorite of The Original Trilogy, But It’s Far From My Least Favorite From The Franchise. It’s Still A Great Movie And I Love It.

Grade: A-.

This movie proved that even a 1977 movie, still could catch us off guard and leave us breathless for weeks. This movie established Sci-fi as one of the premiere movie genres, the movie received universal and commerical praise upon release, and the movie has classic, sprawling and specialized elements sci-fi admirers will adore. Plus, the movie has some of cinema's best trios and the defintive villain, voiced with perfection by american actor, James Earl Jones. You may diss the writing and acting, but since this is a 1977 movie, and not a modern film, that is completely understandle and a mindless complaint thrown out of the window. The movie remains unprecedented to this day, and George Lucas and co. hasn't made a prettier, more stellar gem since. Expand

Star Wars (Episode IV) is THE science-fiction classic because even today, over forty years sinceMovies do not just become classics. They stand the test of time by remaining superior when compared with the generations of films that follow. Star Wars (Episode IV) is THE science-fiction classic because even today, over forty years since its release, it resonates with audiences of all ages due to its compelling characters, timeless story, and perfectly practical visual splendor.

From its opening sequence, Star Wars just sucks you in. It wastes no time in setting up the stakes of the situation at hand: the rebels are outgunned, outmanned, always on the run, and on their last leg that they have to stand on. These tense circumstances are built up from the introduction of Darth Vader as a ruthless, cold, insurmountable opposition force and they never let up as the story quickly moves from one action-packed plight to the next.

The visual effects in Star Wars were fantastic in 1977, and they still remain mostly convincing decades later due to the fact that there is so little reliance on computer-generated imagery. The sets are beautifully constructed and the use of tangible models makes for surprisingly believable space-travel scenery. But this would not be enough without John Williams' score. The music for this film is not just some of the most iconic in cinema, but arguably some of the best music ever composed. It always perfectly syncs with each scene and is ultimately what helps elevate Star Wars to classic status.

The fairly standard story of good versus evil is anchored by strong characters with significant arcs. There is not a single main character in this film that is remotely the same at the end as they were at the beginning. Luke grows into someone that is never content with inaction. Han grows to recognize the value of family and community. Leia comes to accept her role as a political figurehead and grows to fill it. Conversely, Darth Vader, who at the story's start was so scary and unstoppable begins to show vulnerability and fear at the story's conclusion. The actors portray this progress as well as they can, but many of the minor characters deliver disappointingly poor performances that really bog down the emotional force that drives the rest of the film. Still, the writing is mostly quick and smart and it makes up for some of the minor moments of lackluster acting.

The pendulum begins to swing for everyone involved in this tale, and Star Wars is not just a fitting first chapter to one of the greatest sagas of all time, but it is one of the greatest films of all time. It excels at nearly every aspect of filmmaking and expertly crafts a world that is worth becoming emotionally invested in.

Also, this movie is brilliant in that it really is the most basic story ever told. It is just the heroes journey in its most basic form, but done incredibly well. Apart from the aliens, there is not a shred of originality in this story, but it all works together so well that it creates something wholly new. From John William's perfect score really just being Holst's Planets to the iconic text crawl being ripped straight from the thirties, nothing is truly new. The way it all fit together to create a franchise with its own unique identity means it had to use all these parts in its own way. It did this flawlessy. 10/10

Technical effects are slightly rough around the edges at times but always impressive.

Wonderful cast with solid performances all around; would love to see Fisher, Ford, and Jones (with emphasis on "see" in this last instance!) in more films in the future. SF fantasy is a bit of a departure for Sir Guinness; and yet he fits perfectly in the role. Also look out for Peter Cushing as a particularly chilling enemy general. Three and a half stars.

As such, Star Wars ended up fairly mediocre. The main frustrating thing about the series was how deeply entrenched it was in traditional United-States cultural constructs, which I think detracts heavily from the story's ability to generate engaging concept or address any meaningful subjects. The plot itself remained rather unengaging, and I felt my time would have been best spent elsewhere. Expand

Certainly not a perfect movie, but dam is it a good one. This movie started what is Star Wars today, without it we wouldn’t have the amazing story that we all love.

Film buono. Expand

The film is sets up this amazing universe full of characters, creatures, and locations that its almost unreal. What really makes this film is the characters however. They all feel genuine and have conflicting ideas and arcs that all feel rewarding. Not to mention the amazing performances. The writing is superb, and the dialogue is mostly great except for some few poorly delivered lines, the special effects still hold up to this day especially the puppet work and the fast paced plot and bombastic action scenes made this movie an instant classic. La mejor película de la trilogía original de star wars. Posiblemente ,además de generar una revolucion en vfx, tiene una de las mejores bandas sonoras en la historia del cine.

An absolutely epic tale in a far away galaxy. It is both its own self-contained story, and the lead-in to the best trilogy of all time, of which the second instalment is probably the best movie (and my personal favourite). Try your very best to find the original theatrical cuts for the undiluted experience. Unfortunately that is hard to do. Expand

This is the film that began the most incredible film franchise (counting out Disney's Episodes). It's the cinematic masterpiece of the 70s. That's it. That's my review.

Topped only by Empire, but not enough to rate this one lower (I can't give it 9.75). A shining beacon of perfection and good film making, before the dark times... Expand

This is an amazing movie on its own, it's hard to deny the influence this movie had on Sci-Fi films for years to come. Even nowadays, this is still a pretty entertaining and fun movie to watch.
The Good:
-Simple, easy to follow story, a simple story that began an entire saga and universe of countless characters and locations.
-The score is amazing and memorable.
-Good acting.
-Even today, the visual effects are incredible, as CGI was basically a toddler back then, they had to use tons of practical effects that have aged very well.
-Its pacing is great. It's always moving forward and everything that happens in the movie is important to the plot.

The Bad:
-Nowadays it's almost impossible to find the first cut of the movie and now the official versions of the movie available today are the remastered special editions that add unnecesary scenes with ugly and unnecesary CGI that in some points take away from the movie.

Classic is a Classic.
