I don't think, it's a great film, but it's okay. Theres to much politics and to less Star Wars, but overall not the badest.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the most disappointing StarWars movie, the actors are lack laster and some of the scenes are just plain boring. The racing scene in the movie is boring, the ending of it is predictable and honestly it just makes me sad. The movie also suffers from a crippling reliance on CGI that makes the films visuals look worse than the original three movies. If you are a Star Wars fan than I would watch just to understand Anakin better otherwise avoid this film. Expand

How I long for when there was no corporate/liberal agenda being pushed in your face in movies/entertainment. But compared to the stinking turds that Disney has crapped out in the last few years, these prequel films are absolute masterpieces of cinema. Nostalgia aside, the world-building that these prequel films did, especially Episode 1, was inspiring to say the least. Endless classic novels, video games, and tv series were created based off the world-building done in Episode 1. Disney is now trying to save face with this newest mandalorian show, but any true star wars fan has long since abandoned Disney and moved on. Disney is a garbage company with garbage stories that cannot even match George Lucas at his worst. Their attempted cash grab by inserting the original cast members into these objectively awful "sequels" was disgusting and pathetic and makes me miss the prequel movies, which I used to somewhat dislike myself, even more. I will be cheering for Disney's demise and if you still have working brain, you will too. Expand

All of these movies are only annoying. Overall the movie is not dark enough and some childish scenes are redundant.
What else? The worlds are beautiful and there are many of them. The pod race was great.

Pod racing, awesome

This movies greatest flaw is an abundance of hamfisted slapstick humour that doesn't land.

The cg is really looking dated now specifically Jar jar looks extremely fake, I don't remember him looking so disconnected to the scenes in previous viewings but watching it on Disney+ in 1080p he looks very fake.

I've watched this movie about ten times, It's not a terrible movie and there are some great moments, but it's always been a disappointment.

The ending fight with Darth Maul gives it bonus points, too.

In stark contrast to the later Attack of the Clones, TPM was a pretty decent start for the Prequel Trilogy.

Darth Maul and Liam Neeson can't save this movie. The massive shift in tone, as well as the over-animated visuals are just some of the issues. Anakin and Jar Jar are the worst, though.

The acting, editing and special effects are only marginally improved from the original franchise, but this stands more as a testament to the original movies than a failure of this one. Where this movie really falls down is the weak attempt to form a connection between the characters and the audience, and the stilted direction of the actors on the set. The curse of the child actor really hurts this movie as well, along with the cringey additions of characters like JarJar Binks and Nute Gunray. The movie saves itself some semblance of credibility through a few stellar action sequences, notably the pod racing on Tatooine and the dual between QuiGon Jinn, Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. The plot is also superior to any of the original trilogy, and sets up a solid story arch. Again however it suffers from excessive exposition, leaving no mystery to intrigue those watching. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In what should have been a deliberate and riveting prequel to arguably one of the best trilogies, The Phantom Menace shows its age – in the CGI animation and the time since the last installment. The dots simply do not connect, and I'm not sure that Episode I would have any success if it were not for the beginnings of Darth Vader himself.

Darth Vader is obviously a vital character in the franchise, so the portrayal of Anakin Skywalker here is understandable, but feels forced. Because he is strong with the Force. Ha! With the introduction of many new characters, the same level of closeness were not attained with the likes of Jar Jar Binks and Qui Jon. Star Wars has always been innovative with its stories and locations, but at the same time it dwells too much on fighting with clones and the plot device of destroying the Death Star (on accident?)

As a Star Wars fan, I apprecaite seeing young Anakin Skywalker, but I am disappointed. I love seeing the similarities between father and son, Luke, yet Luke's journey can't help but cast a shadow over his father's. The Phantom Menace's enemy is not nearly as well developed as the original trilogy, and the film struggles with reconciling Anakin's journey through the ages. Obi-Wan pulls it out though. As the connective tissue between generations, it is good to see the Jedi teachings passed along, even without the blessing of Yoda. But why the CGI? The special effects may have been the most disappointing to me – I love the nostalgia.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think that the big problem that the Phantom Menace had, it was to go out after the Star Wars original movies, but little by little this movie has got more fans, Mainly to start (In my opinion), the best periods in the Star Wars Universe; "The Clone Wars".

It is thruth that some characters are a little tedious (As Jar Jar), or the CGI is, in some parts, excessive, but this movie appeared in 1999, so this tool was new, i think that it is something forgivable, theremore said CGI has aged good.

The best this movie, and because i think that this episode will be reminded:

-The soundtrack: It is better works of John Williams. I highlight "Duel Fates"
-The Universe: Impressive, Nabbo is incredible; the conflict is interested and Coruscant is massive.
-Politics: In my case, it is the best parth, not only in this movie, also in all triology.
-Some characters and actuations: Examples as Obi Wan has been performed by Edward McGregor
-This movie has got a the best action scens that i have seen in my life.

Conclusion:
Good movie, with some mistakes but very fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look, I get the point why everybody is hating the movie; because of Jar Jar and little Anakin. I'm glad I watched this as a kid (maybe that's because I love this movie) but still the hate is just too much! Jar Jar can be annoying, but even he has some good scenes. Overall the gungan race is really cool in my opinion. And except that one dumb dialogue "are you an angel?" Anakin is totally fine. There are so many movies with annoying children-acting (Jurassic Park for example) out there that i can overlook to those dialogues. Additional, there are so many damn good things in this movie who should be appreciated. The Podrace was perfectly done and the lightsaber-duel was one of the best (probably the best!) in the whole Star Wars-Saga. Also the politic-part and the battle of naboo was well executioned. Expand

The positives, which I've got with this movie have got to be Darth Maul, The Podrace scene, The lightsaber fights which Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) have with the droids and especially the fight with Darth maul, that's just amazing, especially with the John Williams score it works so well while the scenes are happening. Also, the actors of Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn have got some great chemistry while they're on set together. Finally, I've got to say Jar Jar binks has to be another positive to this movie, he actually adds quite a few good funny laughs to this movie. The negatives, which I've got with this movie has to be the outdated cgi effects and the really outdated greenscreen effects. Also, another negative I've got with this movie has to be, there isn't much Darth Maul throughout it. Finally, my last negative to this movie has to be some of the cgi which doesn't hold up well during the fight scene on Tatooine when Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul are fighting and the final fight scene, when the doors open the camera work looks like a 360 video. Overall, it's quite an outdated movie today but it's pretty good for a Star Wars movie. Expand

I do have split feelings about 'Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace' though. One positive is the casting, which is well done.

Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are strong choices to enter the franchise, I enjoyed both of them. Jake Lloyd does a fine job in his role, while the likes of Terence Stamp, Samuel L. Jackson and Keira Knightley also feature. Natalie Portman appears too, but I honestly never really cared for her lot's side of the story. Ahmed Best, meanwhile, is very hit-and-miss as Jar Jar Binks.

Speaking of Binks, the CGI is rather iffy in this fourth installment of 'Star Wars'. Of course it did come out in 1999, but other films from that era and beyond have aged better in these terms. The score is, at least, more than up to scratch.

Overall, I'm OK with this but it most definitely should've been far greater. Some scenes do go on for too long, while I did find a lack of a serious threat for the first chunk of the film. Darth Maul looks the part, but ends up being rather forgettable.

I can see how diehard fans of the series could be disappointed by this.

I feel ashamed to say that Phantom Menace is the start of the Skywalker Saga when it's filled with George Lucas' brain farts after the Originals.

Are kids supposed to see a film about an intergalactic trade embargo?

I had no idea what the movies were all about so two years ago I decided to sit down and watch every single Star Wars movie just before the release of Episode IX. Until now I used to always think that Star Wars are all about fighting with lightsabers, shooting blasters and something something Luke I'm your father. But now that I have watched them all and learnt everything, I can finally review them. So here goes the first one.

I really like the idea behind the prequels: George Lucas wanted us to see how an innocent boy named Anakin slowly turned into Darth Vader. This is the first movie where he is introduced as a young boy, who has to work for a pingas-nosed fly whom his family owed money. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn get him freedom so that they can be Jedis. I have already forgotten why they decided to do so, because that scene has a very boring aura to it. Just remembering that scene makes me feel sleepy.

But what follows next is the very thing that took away all my sleep - The fabled Pod Racing! It was so cool to watch. Out of the 6 stars that I have given this movie, 3 alone are for the pod racing. I really wish there were some even more fun scenes throughout the movie. Sadly what we got was Jar-Jar Binks. I don't know about you but I absolutely hate seeing those annoying humanoid characters who always speak in weird manners and do random things in fight scenes (Gollum, Dobby, Gimli, Hound from Transformers etc).

So anyway, Anakin is brought to Padmé, who decides to keep him like a child (I'm gonna control my laughter since I wanna keep this review spoiler free). But the Jedi council refuses to keep Anakin since he has grown too old to be trained as a Jedi. I strongly object to this. Luke was trained as a Jedi when he was like what, in his late twenties? So where's the problem here? And it's not even like the technology developed by then so now more people could be trained. Everything is still literally the same, if not worse in future. So in all fairness Anakin should have always been allowed to be a Jedi.

The movie has many memorable characters like Mace Windu, Darth Maul, young Yoda, young Palpatine and Gunray. We also get to see the origins of C3PO, which was definitely unexpected. The movie adds a lot to the lore of Star Wars, but there is barely any world building in comparison to what the original trilogy did. Another problem is that it's very boring and campy. At least the boredom was addressed in the future movies, but by then the damage was done. The campiness stayed, however. The CGI is also very bad, with shadows and lighting reacting all wrong.

Star Wars: Episode I is one of those movies I'd put in the same categories as Batman v Superman. The first time you watch it you hate it. The second time you watch it, it gets better. But I just can't get myself to watch it the second time, remembering the Tatooine scene and Jar-Jar Binks. Although I don't think this movie is outright trash like how many haters call it, it's definitely far from being a "definitely not the worst Star Wars" movie. I really hope in future Disney remasters this movie's CGI and brings it back without any other edit from its side. This could definitely make this movie a bit better.

But I decided to watch them out of curiosity. I've watched Episode I and it turns out I like it! Everything that had to do with lightsaber duels was great. I loved seeing Darth Maul fight Obi Wan and Qui-Gon. The podracing scene was cool and intense. It has aged surprisingly well. Overall the animation is ok, but you can tell it's 20 years old. Also, I didn't find Jar Jar annoying at all. He was even funny at times.

The lesson I learned is that you shouldn't listen to the angry mob. You should give a movie a chance and watch it yourself. They're saying the same thing about the sequels. That they're bad. But I've seen them and I liked them a lot. So I get the feeling I will like Episodes II and III as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many people hate this movie and it surprises me. I feel like a crazy person when I talk with people about this movie. The two main reasons I feel the movie is hated are one, Jar Jar. And two, the hard to understand plot. For me there are only two scenes where Jar Jar actively makes the movie worse. When steps in poo and gets **** on by a pink space cow. Other then those two scenes he’s pretty harmless. Now the plot. Most of the plot is in the senate scenes. People tend to not understand the plot because they don’t listen to the senate scenes due to them being, “boring.” But once you sit down and listen you see how smart and frightening Palpatine is. You see the inner workings of this world’s government and how it was infiltrated. The senate scenes are few and far between and not that big of a hindrance to me. Other then that the movie is action packed and full of interesting concepts. The main problems I have with the movie are the acting and the pod racing scene. The acting is bad and the pod race scene is fun the first time and too the long the other times. Overall I think it’s a very interesting movie that only struggles with keeping you invested. Expand

Lucas’ vision for Vader’s background unfortunately begins with what feels like more filler than necessary story and character development. While TPM has a pretty straight forward plot, but it gets bogged down in stilted dialogue and some odd inclusions such as the goofy - and often loathed- Jar Jar Binks. Menace makes up for some of its lackluster writing and robot like dialogue, with spectacular and impressive visuals, , including but not limited to, lightsaber battle with Darth Maul and the Jedi as well as the exciting podracing sequence. Liam Nesson’s Qui Gon Jinn is perhaps the most charismatic out of the cast and Ewan as Obi, while competent here, was a good choice because he really gets to shine in subsequent films. Worse than I remember…

Let’s start with the positives. The film feels like classic Star Wars. Moreso than any of the other prequels (and Disney’s sequels) The Phantom Menace embraces the pioneering practical effects that made the original Trilogy so ahead of its time while also pushing forward the capabilities of digital effects technology. Every environment, every ship, and (almost) every creature has been lovingly crafted by model makers, designers and makeup artists giving the film that authentic Star Wars feel. I feel like I’m stepping back into that world created in the Original Trilogy, but a world that feels greatly and appropriately expanded upon. The film takes us back in time, to an era free of the grime and dirt of the Galactic Civil War; to an era of prosperity and peace typified with the pure and beautiful architecture of Naboo and the sleek and stylish design of their vehicles.

The production team has also worked overtime to push the envelope of digital effects. Jar Jar Binks, from a special effects perspective, is perhaps the productions single greatest achievement. While the cracks in the affects have started to show with the passing of time, they hold up incredibly well for a film produced over two decades ago. It cannot be overstated how incredible this film looks to this day even after 20 years. And of course, the music is incredible. But this is where my positive feelings towards this film come to a screeching halt…

There’s no other way of putting this, but the plot of this film is atrocious. Darth Sidious wants to force the Queen of Naboo to sign a treaty that would make an evil corporation’s invasion of her planet legal. That’s it in a nutshell. I will admit that, in the context of the full story of the Prequel Trilogy, Sidious’ plan in this film does serve a purpose in his grand scheme to take over the galaxy, but that doesn’t make it any less boring. When I think for Star Wars, the very last thing that springs to mind is a God damn trade dispute. I watch Star Wars for that sense of escapism and excitement. I come to Star Wars to get swept up in a galaxy trotting adventure with compelling heroes and dastardly villains, the fight of good vs evil, beautiful and lush alien worlds and thrilling action. This isn’t to say however that I don’t think the world of Star Wars can’t be used to tell interesting stories about more mature themes and political intrigue (something the latter prequels to a much greater degree of success), but those themes and story beats must be compelling and should never overshadow the core of what makes a captivating Star Wars adventure. Now the characters… There aren’t any. None of the actors have any chemistry with each other. None of the actors seem to try to deliver any of their lines with any emotion. Ewan McGregor and Liam Neesom are both stilted and wooden to the nth degree. We are expected to believe that Obi Wan and Qui Gon have pre-existing relationship, one where the pair work well together. Natalie Portman gives an incredibly stunted performance as both the queen and her handmaid decoy and Ahmed Best does his best given the direction and script, he was given, I guess. Best has received enough criticism for his role as it is and to be honest, it’s hard to blame him for Jar Jar because he gave George Lucas the performance that he asked for. Similarly with Jake Lloyd, he can’t be held accountable for the shoddy writing or for the fact that he clearly wasn’t the right actor for the role; not that we needed to ever meet Anakin as an 8-year-old child. And I don’t really have to say a lot about Darth Maul. He looks the part, but he really does not make for a compelling villain on screen. He’s there to look cool in a fight, that’s it. On the fight scenes, I will say that, personally for me, the lightsaber fights are overrated. I appreciate the idea that these are Jedi and Sith in the prime, so they must appear more efficient and sleeker when duelling, but it just feels over-choreographed; more like they are dancing, trying to hit each other’s lightsabers. It just doesn’t feel like they are fighting to win.

Overall, I think the nostalgia I feel for this film has finally worn off. I found rewatching this film excruciating, and I must confess that I was unable to see it through to its end. The film, from a production and worldbuilding standpoint, manages to embrace the best elements of the OT, it’s just a shame it is all wrapped up in a plot that is both bloated, boring, and mostly pointless. The film is a lesson in the dangers of excess, and not knowing when enough is enough. Lucas clearly had a plan of the story he wanted to tell, but he allowed every idea that popped into his brain cloud that vision, and no one on the production team had the balls to tell him to reign it in. The Phantom Menace is all style and simultaneously too much and not enough substance.

The Phantom Menace is one of the most underestimated movies of the franchise. The acting really isn't a big problem and the story is quite simple yet compelling. I don't find the politics boring,I think they're pretty good even if for a kid it may be boring/difficult to understand this wold. And that's weird because the film has a lot of childish elements like Jar Jar. Overall the villain,Darth Maul, in this movie is extremely and laughably bad, he's like a tool, but Palpatine is wonderfully executed. It's also very rewatchable and doesn't have any big problems. It's a great beginning for the saga and a good introduction to the galaxy far far away to new fans Expand

There is no need to see this movie at all as it will absolutely wreck all 8 other mainline Star Wars movies if you do, and the Machete Order (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Attack of The Clones, Revenge of The Sith, Return of The Jedi) proves its irrelevance. Attack of the Clones tells you everything you to need to know about this movie in 25 minutes of summary, completely avoiding this painful 2 and a half hour slog of a movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This probably has the lowest lows of a star wars movie, but the highs are as high as any movie. The dialog is wooden at times but that helps the believability for me because They are supposed to be aliens and think differently than us. Also Anakin should be awkward because he is a slave boy with no positive role models in dating or communication. My favorite part is Shmi's death and the surrounding scenes. Love Genosis, first time I saw a truly massive war on a planet other than earth. Also Boba holding Jango's helmet after he dies is incredible. The rhymes of this episode are numerable, but I wont go that in depth. Expand

Great visuals and awesome world building. Great character additions. Podrace scene was great. This film has an amazing soundtrack and the best lightsaber duel of the saga.
