You know, after watching all of the Star Wars movies, and I mean All of them. The Phantom Menace isn't bad at all.

I know there will be a lot of Star Wars Fans that will disagree, I understand, Jar Jar Binks is an Unlikable character, and I understand that 2/3 parts of this film are just talking, with little to no progression on what is going on.

But I have to say I think George Knew what he was doing with these films, especially this one, this is the laid-back Star Wars Film that is more of an Introduction(A long 2-hour introduction) to the Skywalker Saga. It shows off locals, characters, and the new CGI(for its time) to introduce the audience into a galaxy far far away.

Is this the best Star Wars film? NO.
Is this a Good Star Wars Film? Still No.

So why in the de wanna wanga do I rate this highly, its because when you watch this for the first time it's pretty bad, but when you watch it again it gets better somehow, You watch it one more time and you realise what George did was something completely unforeseen by the Jedi *cough, the Audience.

What we gained from this movie wasn't only The Pod Racing Scene, the Darth Maul Fight and Duel of the Fates, it was the most powerful thing in the universe more powerful than the force.

MEMES

7/10, As far as I understand I enjoyed this film, it is different to the later Trilogy, but it is good different.
It's better to embrace this film, skip 2/3 of this movie and head on over to the pod racing scene, and skip again to the Darth Maul fight.
Still to this day, we don't have anything like it outside the first 3 episodic movies. And no The Last Jedi, While "The Rey feat. Kylo fight" was enjoyable there are noticeable flaws, it's Child's play compared to this. The soundtrack, the risk, and the overall flow of this scene are just glorious. In fact, all the scenes in this film were executed fine, it's just that most of it was boring.

Clone Wars Review, I must.

Both the best and the worst of all Star Wars movies. That's because it has a completely different and unique tone from all the other episodes, and you will either love it or hate it. To alot of people it's too boring and childish, but I think it's good for what it is - an adventure movie for kids with deeper themes that adults and star wars nerds can ejoy too. My only real complaint is there's too much Jar Jar and not enough Darth Maul, if you swapped their screentime the movie would've been perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The more I think about it, the more I like this movie. A lot of people really hate this movie, but it's actually quite good. It introduces so many great new characters and races and locations, but my favorite part about this film is the way shows the subtle cracks in the government of the Republic, its Senate, and even the Jedi Order that the Council just can't quite seem to get. A lot of people complain about Jar-Jar and Anakin. Jar-Jar really isn't that bad; his humor may not always be perfectly placed, but it's there to distract kids from some of the darker and more serious tones of the movie. Anakin is actually a really good character; he's central to the plot and some of the more emotional scenes in the film (Anakin leaving his mother, Qui-Gon's death/funeral. The pioneering visual effects still look pretty much on point even 24 years later. The only real problems I can think of is that some of the set design is kind of bland (half of the Council Chamber is just like a blue concrete room, like what) and some characters, mostly Darth Maul and maybe Captain Panaka, have very abrupt introductions, little characterization, and are quickly removed from the story (I know Maul came back, but that was later). It may not have the highest highs in the series, but overall this is a deeply underrated and well-made motion picture.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This probably has the lowest lows of a star wars movie, but the highs are as high as any movie. The dialog is wooden at times but that helps the believability for me because They are supposed to be aliens and think differently than us. Also Anakin should be awkward because he is a slave boy with no positive role models in dating or communication. My favorite part is Shmi's death and the surrounding scenes. Love Genosis, first time I saw a truly massive war on a planet other than earth. Also Boba holding Jango's helmet after he dies is incredible. The rhymes of this episode are numerable, but I wont go that in depth. Expand

The Phantom Menace is one of the most underestimated movies of the franchise. The acting really isn't a big problem and the story is quite simple yet compelling. I don't find the politics boring,I think they're pretty good even if for a kid it may be boring/difficult to understand this wold. And that's weird because the film has a lot of childish elements like Jar Jar. Overall the villain,Darth Maul, in this movie is extremely and laughably bad, he's like a tool, but Palpatine is wonderfully executed. It's also very rewatchable and doesn't have any big problems. Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace is definitely worth a watch, but I do think it is one of the weaker movies of the Star Wars saga. I will admit I wasn't expecting much after reading some very negative reviews on IMDb, but I do think this particular instalment did in some ways exceed my expectations and disappointed as well. On a visual and technical level, it looks absolutely fantastic, with splendid special effects, stunning cinematography and fine scenery and costumes. The script is fairly decent, perhaps lacking the sophistication of Empire Strikes Back or New Hope, but does have some memorable lines. The action is constantly exhilarating, and Darth Maul, well played by Ray Park is a very good villain. Of course though, Darth Vader is better. Most of the performances are very good, especially Natalie Portman as Queen Padma who looked stunning and Jake Lloyd as Anakin Skywalker who shone with his confident charm. And Jar Jar Binks is okay on the most part, and you have to love Yoda. And the music score by John Williams was outstanding, definitely one of his best works. The quality of sound and direction are also impressive. However, there were things about this film that did disappoint. One is despite the awesome visuals, strong music score and good characters, the story never quite distinguished itself. It did take a while to get going, and when it did try to get going and you could tell it wanted to, it was further disadvantaged by the uneven pacing. Liam Neeson is a fine actor, his performances in Kinsey and Schindler's List are proof of that, and I do like Ewan McGregor. But as Qui-Gon Jin and Obi Wan Kenobi, both stars give unusually wooden performances, and at times looked even embarrassed. And as I said, the pacing is very uneven, there are some slow moments, and one or two scenes felt rushed. All in all, maybe disappointing for fans of the saga, but it cannot be denied that visually it is an accomplishment. 7/10 Bethany Cox Expand

A huge drop off the original trilogy. I still like it, mind.

I do have split feelings about 'Star Wars: Episode I โ€“ The Phantom Menace' though. One positive is the casting, which is well done.

Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are strong choices to enter the franchise, I enjoyed both of them. Jake Lloyd does a fine job in his role, while the likes of Terence Stamp, Samuel L. Jackson and Keira Knightley also feature. Natalie Portman appears too, but I honestly never really cared for her lot's side of the story. Ahmed Best, meanwhile, is very hit-and-miss as Jar Jar Binks.

Speaking of Binks, the CGI is rather iffy in this fourth installment of 'Star Wars'. Of course it did come out in 1999, but other films from that era and beyond have aged better in these terms. The score is, at least, more than up to scratch.

Overall, I'm OK with this but it most definitely should've been far greater. Some scenes do go on for too long, while I did find a lack of a serious threat for the first chunk of the film. Darth Maul looks the part, but ends up being rather forgettable.

I can see how diehard fans of the series could be disappointed by this.

But I decided to watch them out of curiosity. I've watched Episode I and it turns out I like it! Everything that had to do with lightsaber duels was great. I loved seeing Darth Maul fight Obi Wan and Qui-Gon. The podracing scene was cool and intense. It has aged surprisingly well. Overall the animation is ok, but you can tell it's 20 years old. Also, I didn't find Jar Jar annoying at all. He was even funny at times.

The lesson I learned is that you shouldn't listen to the angry mob. You should give a movie a chance and watch it yourself. They're saying the same thing about the sequels. That they're bad. But I've seen them and I liked them a lot. So I get the feeling I will like Episodes II and III as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many people hate this movie and it surprises me. I feel like a crazy person when I talk with people about this movie. The two main reasons I feel the movie is hated are one, Jar Jar. And two, the hard to understand plot. For me there are only two scenes where Jar Jar actively makes the movie worse. When steps in poo and gets **** on by a pink space cow. Other then those two scenes heโ€™s pretty harmless. Now the plot. Most of the plot is in the senate scenes. People tend to not understand the plot because they donโ€™t listen to the senate scenes due to them being, โ€œboring.โ€ But once you sit down and listen you see how smart and frightening Palpatine is. You see the inner workings of this worldโ€™s government and how it was infiltrated. The senate scenes are few and far between and not that big of a hindrance to me. Other then that the movie is action packed and full of interesting concepts. The main problems I have with the movie are the acting and the pod racing scene. The acting is bad and the pod race scene is fun the first time and too the long the other times. Overall I think itโ€™s a very interesting movie that only struggles with keeping you invested. Expand

How I long for when there was no corporate/liberal agenda being pushed in your face in movies/entertainment. But compared to the stinking turds that Disney has crapped out in the last few years, these prequel films are absolute masterpieces of cinema. Nostalgia aside, the world-building that these prequel films did, especially Episode 1, was inspiring to say the least. Endless classic novels, video games, and tv series were created based off the world-building done in Episode 1. Disney is now trying to save face with this newest mandalorian show, but any true star wars fan has long since abandoned Disney and moved on. Disney is a garbage company with garbage stories that cannot even match George Lucas at his worst. Their attempted cash grab by inserting the original cast members into these objectively awful "sequels" was disgusting and pathetic and makes me miss the prequel movies, which I used to somewhat dislike myself, even more. I will be cheering for Disney's demise and if you still have working brain, you will too. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think that the big problem that the Phantom Menace had, it was to go out after the Star Wars original movies, but little by little this movie has got more fans, Mainly to start (In my opinion), the best periods in the Star Wars Universe; "The Clone Wars".

It is thruth that some characters are a little tedious (As Jar Jar), or the CGI is, in some parts, excessive, but this movie appeared in 1999, so this tool was new, i think that it is something forgivable, theremore said CGI has aged good.

The best this movie, and because i think that this episode will be reminded:

-The soundtrack: It is better works of John Williams. I highlight "Duel Fates"
-The Universe: Impressive, Nabbo is incredible; the conflict is interested and Coruscant is massive.
-Politics: In my case, it is the best parth, not only in this movie, also in all triology.
-Some characters and actuations: Examples as Obi Wan has been performed by Edward McGregor
-This movie has got a the best action scens that i have seen in my life.

Conclusion:
Good movie, with some mistakes but very fun.

It does have amazing performances from Ewan McGregor and Co. though, and I'm a fan of the little guy they got to play kid Anakin (he really does give off a very real childlike innocence). The ending fight with Darth Maul gives it bonus points, too.

In stark contrast to the later Attack of the Clones, TPM was a pretty decent start for the Prequel Trilogy.

Though the film does have some problems like boring politic scenes, and I can see why Jar-Jar Binks can make people get irritated really fast (He never really annoyed me a ton though.) This is still a better film than people give credit. Neeson, McGregor, McDiarmid are incredible in this one, Williams give a fantastic score, and the final duel is one of the awesomest things in all of Star Wars. Underrated film, although I can see why people may dislike it. Expand

The positives, which I've got with this movie have got to be Darth Maul, The Podrace scene, The lightsaber fights which Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) have with the droids and especially the fight with Darth maul, that's just amazing, especially with the John Williams score it works so well while the scenes are happening. Also, the actors of Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn have got some great chemistry while they're on set together. Finally, I've got to say Jar Jar binks has to be another positive to this movie, he actually adds quite a few good funny laughs to this movie. The negatives, which I've got with this movie has to be the outdated cgi effects and the really outdated greenscreen effects. Also, another negative I've got with this movie has to be, there isn't much Darth Maul throughout it. Finally, my last negative to this movie has to be some of the cgi which doesn't hold up well during the fight scene on Tatooine when Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul are fighting and the final fight scene, when the doors open the camera work looks like a 360 video. Overall, it's quite an outdated movie today but it's pretty good for a Star Wars movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look, I get the point why everybody is hating the movie; because of Jar Jar and little Anakin. I'm glad I watched this as a kid (maybe that's because I love this movie) but still the hate is just too much! Jar Jar can be annoying, but even he has some good scenes. Overall the gungan race is really cool in my opinion. And except that one dumb dialogue "are you an angel?" Anakin is totally fine. There are so many movies with annoying children-acting (Jurassic Park for example) out there that i can overlook to those dialogues. Additional, there are so many damn good things in this movie who should be appreciated. The Podrace was perfectly done and the lightsaber-duel was one of the best (probably the best!) in the whole Star Wars-Saga. Also the politic-part and the battle of naboo was well executioned. Expand

This film, released more than ten years after the last film in the original trilogy, marks the start of the second Star Wars trilogy, a prequel to the original movies. It may even be considered that, if the first trilogy was the story of LukeThis film, released more than ten years after the last film in the original trilogy, marks the start of the second Star Wars trilogy, a prequel to the original movies. It may even be considered that, if the first trilogy was the story of Luke Skywalker, the second is the story of Darth Vader. In this film, directed and written by George Lucas, has the participation of Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ian McDiarmid, among other actors.

This is a film that seeks to begin a new trilogy but that's full of failures, with a single guilty: George Lucas. He made the script and the direction, but he seems so concerned about action and special effects that forgot everything else. The script is reasonable, the connection he makes with the previous films, although remote, is credible. However, it gives too much importance to things that don't matter (as the race where Anakin participates) and ignore events that, if they had been developed, would have made the film more interesting. This is the case of the Naboo's invasion, which should have been more dramatic, and Luke chose to observe coolly, from the Amidala's palace windows. Another flaw is the character's design. Lucas took all the emotional and psychological side, emptying them. There are even certain characters that shouldn't exist because they have no relevance, as Sebulba, a poor attempt to create a villain which is never threatening. The passion of Amidala and Anakin, who should have been intense and overwhelming, hardly goes beyond the exchange of glances, prudish and restrained, unable to move the audience. Its a film with plenty of action, but a huge emotional shyness, unable to make the audience shed a tear. The public sees and appreciates, but isn't attached to the characters. The most notable exception is Jar Jar, a humorous and well developed character, making the audience love him or hate him and leaving anyone indifferent. So, if by some chance the actors didn't seem to be particularly inspired in this film, we can blame Luke, as the actors did what was asked of them.

Action scenes and special effects deserve applause and are, truly, the great strong point of the film. The new technologies have enabled to make wonders apparently unbelievable at the time of the first film. The costumes, characterization and scenarios also deserve congratulations. The soundtrack wasn't particularly great but the editing and sound effects were at the highest level, leading to the Oscar nomination for Best Sound, Best Sound Effects and Best Visual Effects.

SKIP TO THE END FOR REVIEW SUMMARY.

The Phantom Menace is a divisive film, to say the least. Fan expectations were extremely high in 1999 when the film was released. However, I'd say that it's by no means as bad as people think.

The Phantom Menace, the fourth Star Wars film but the first chronologically, follows Jedi Masters Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they help Queen Amidala save her planet of Naboo from invasion. Along their adventure, they meet Anakin Skywalker, who Qui-Gon believes to be the prophesied Chosen One that will bring balance to the Force. While the film seems inconsequential at first glance, it proves to be a worthwhile addition to the saga.

There are a few awkward lines here and there, but I find that the movie's plot, soundtrack, action, and effects more than make up for it. Qui-Gon, who we follow for most of the movie, is a rogue and idealistic Jedi. About midway through the movie, we get to see the other members of the Jedi Order and it's interesting to see how Qui-Gon clashes with their beliefs. Jar Jar Binks' (the controversial comic relief in the film) presence in the movie has definitely been exaggerated over the years. He by no means ruins the movie and even serves the story well by helping to set up the ending battle sequence. And I'm sure that most of you know already that the famous lightsaber battle at the end of the movie is well worth seeing. The film also benefits from the chemistry between Qui-Gon (Liam Neeson), Shmi Skywalker (Pernilla August), and Anakin (Jake Lloyd).

I think that Star Wars fans today would really benefit from giving the prequels another go. They really aren't as bad as most people think. The Phantom Menace provides an engaging and interesting plot combined with some of the best action in the saga.

Review was redone ahead of The Last Jedi.

It is very forgettable and it is not fun for the most part. Especially Jar Jar Binks, but it is somewhat forgivable with the amazing darth maul battle and the pod racing, while everything else is forgettable.

Compared to the piece of crap TLJ is, going back to real star wars feel so damn nice. TLJ may have very well ruined the SW ST. Only lucas films are cannon for me.

It can be slow at times, with too much politics to be the best star wars, but it has one of the best duels in the series, and the climatic battle certainly lives up to expectations

I love jar jar! I love the complex political plot this new trilogy engage with and anyone who takes issue with jar jar need only look at innumerable animated cg 'kids' films to see how forward thinking that character design was. To me this is the perfect cinematic 'ride' encapsulating exciting moments of action, political drama and universe expanding delivered at a digestable pace wrapped in high art. Tastes fresh. Expand

A great movie, not much else to say. It's sad how some people prefer hypocriticy over bias. Sure, you were born 100 years ago and that gives you the right to bash on the prequels because you saw the original trilogy first? That is hypocrisy.
