Entering the enchanting realm of Studio Ghibli based on a friend's recommendation, I was introduced to "Spirited Away" just a few years back. I must say, even now, I haven't encountered a movie quite like Hayao Miyazaki's remarkable animatedEntering the enchanting realm of Studio Ghibli based on a friend's recommendation, I was introduced to "Spirited Away" just a few years back. I must say, even now, I haven't encountered a movie quite like Hayao Miyazaki's remarkable animated creation from 2001. Everything about this film, from its characters to the tale it weaves, not to mention the exquisite hand-drawn world it unfolds within, held my complete attention right from the start. It's safe to declare that anyone who hasn't experienced this cinematic gem is definitely missing out on one of the finest hand-drawn animated films ever brought to life.

For me, "Spirited Away" carries a special significance, and I'm certain many others feel the same way. Miyazaki's storytelling imparts a distinctive and intimate touch to the entire narrative. Many situations within the film resonate deeply with viewers, whether it's Chihiro's journey, Haku's and Chihiro’s budding friendship, or the enigmatic and mysterious No-Face trying to find its place in the world. The reason this movie holds such a dear place in my heart is intertwined with a close friend who recommended it to me. While watching, I couldn't help but imagine her stepping into Chihiro's shoes. The film's personal and relatable themes foster a strong connection between the screen and its audience.

At its core, Chihiro's story is one of personal growth. Throughout "Spirited Away," we follow Chihiro through relatable challenges, even though they unfold in Miyazaki's imaginative realm of spirits. Amidst moments of joy and triumph, we witness Chihiro evolve into a stronger individual, shaped by her struggles and moments of adversity.

Since my initial viewing a few years ago, "Spirited Away" has swiftly secured its place as my all-time favorite movie. I'd award it a rating of 9.8/10, coming incredibly close to the realm of cinematic perfection, at least in my eyes. I must admit, I'm quite influenced by my personal connection to the film, but I genuinely believe that Miyazaki truly outdid himself with this creation. I love Studio Ghibli, and Spirited Away is one of my favourite films from the studio. This is coming from someone who was delighted by Howl's Moving Castle, blown away by Princess Mononoke, emotionally devastated by Grave of the Fireflies andI love Studio Ghibli, and Spirited Away is one of my favourite films from the studio. This is coming from someone who was delighted by Howl's Moving Castle, blown away by Princess Mononoke, emotionally devastated by Grave of the Fireflies and touched by the simplicity of The Cat Returns all but to name a few. Spirited Away is a mystical, charming and truly enchanting animated fantasy, even with the long length and some slow moments. The animation is absolutely stunning, both the hand drawn visuals and the CGI graphics give an ethereal charm to the film. The characters move more than convincingly and the colours are beautiful. The music is also outstanding, I loved the simplicity of the piano and the drama of the more dramatic parts. The story is a pleasure, I know people have complained of some loose ends, but it is an original, touching and charming one I feel. I also loved the characters. Chihiro, voiced with real enthusiasm by Daveigh Chase, is sulky to begin with, but she is also brave and resourceful, traits I like in young heroines. Lin is kind and sympathetic, and Susan Egan who was also in Porco Rosso was unusually sensitive as the character. Jason Marsden is charming as Haku, and Suzanne Pleshette is perfect as the grotesque Yubaba and as her sister Zeniba. Overall, I loved Spirited Away, it is really charming. 10/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

Spirited Away is not perfect, - in fact, it is far from it - yet the movie is spectacularly imaginative and wonderful all throughout. I have always heard pleasant things about this particular film from everybody who has seen it. I have always heard pleasant things about this particular film from everybody who has seen it. I have not heard of a single person who did not enjoy Spirited Away. Until 2020, Spirited Away was so popular that it was the highest grossing anime movie of all time. As I began to watch the movie, I was unfortunately disappointed. I did not understand the hype at all. I will not deny that this movie is spectacularly animated with some of the most gorgeous scenes in animated history, but that, to me at least, did not make up for the slow and unspectacular plot. The movie follows a girl named Chihiro, who is often referred to as Sen, as she enters the spirit world. Her patents have been turned into pigs, and to save them, she must get a job at a spirit bath house. Sen is a wonderfully brave girl who has so much love and kindness in her heart that she displays throughout the movie, particularly towards the end, that the viewer cannot help but to smile. I really liked a lot about this movie, but in particular, I loved the unique and imaginative characters and world. Studio Ghibli is known for creating iconic and lovable characters, and this is undoubtably true in this movie.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spirited Away is, of course, a big experience to evertyone who wants to know the process between chidhood and adulthood/amadureciment. The film express this theme thought Chihiro, the main agent of this process, who doesnt have the perspective of the adult age, like a psychology book about chilhood, but the movie shows the consequences of this transition thought the own children. Chihiro is showed in the beginning like a spoiled girl that all time is complaining about everything and everybody. She complain about the fact her are going to other city and about the fact her flower are dying (this is her responsability). In this first half of movie, Chihiro is, basically, a girl who have fight with whole the world about little things. With the happening of the story, when this parents are transformate in pigs and the region of restaurants started to be invades by ghost and sobrenatural criatures, the world had the effort to challenge Chihiro to get out of this situation, and this is one of the mensages of the movie: The world is a place that is indiferent or againt you. To survive, Chihiro need to work in this sobrenatural society, a society that have a big obssession for gold. In this little information, is possible to compare with the capitalist real world about work and greed, for example Yubaba, the society's leader who's appear in movie like a authoritarian person. Yubaba, who's represent the boss, the politic and all of people who's only see money, shows her insanity when she "take" Chihiro's name, removing some letters in kanji (japanese writing) e transforme it in "Sen". The name "Chihiro" is formated by "thousand" and "search" kanjis, representing the person who's is big, numerally, but "Sen", name imposted by Yubaba, is formated only by "thousand" kanji, transforming Chihiro in a number. However, the most interesting about Yubaba is, not necessary, she is retrated like a bad character even have some characteristics of ocidental animations villains, like Disney. In some moments, she helps the people in some hard works in the bathroom, like in the "stink spirit"(Kawa no Kami)'s incident, when she motivate Chihiro/Sen to serve the customer. An antagonist building that isn't totally bad distance of cliches animation and transforme Yubaba in a more humanizate character. When it's know all dificulties that fight in this journey, important to her ripening that isn't "opost to chilhood" in any moment, many elements appear in movie, main in the second half, represent the memorie and the nostalgia of chilhood not valorized by Chihiro in the benning. The hair tie gived by Zeniba (Yubaba's sister) and stitched by No-Face (Bandai-Gaeru) is one of this elements. This Tie, that according to Zeniba can protect Chihiro of all bad things, transforme the material object, liked to polit in the capitalist world, in a emotional object, when, in this topic, express the emotional value of the things and not only the finantial value is part of individual ripening. Spirited Away is one of the best Hayao Miyazaki's movies. Chihiro is not a passive agent that only see the world happen in your life, that is the form to represent the childhood in many times, but a ative agent who can build new thing in the world and suffers the consequences of his actions because the child is part of the world too. Like say the song of the brazilin poet and composer Arnaldo Antunes: "Everybody was child yet, Einstein, Freud and Plato too/Hitler, Bush and Saddam Hussei/Who have money and who doesn't have"… Expand

I watched Spirited Away as a kid, when my then-weeb sister forced me to. We had to share our computer time and she forced me to sit there and watch this. First of all I had never liked anime, probably my sister had heard about this from school. And secondly I could have been playing browser games instead of watching this. But now when I look back at it, this is one of the best anime films I have watched. However, since I saw this film over twelve years ago, my knowledge is not very fresh and I might make some mistakes while writing this review.
As I have grown into becoming an artist now, the idea of this film has started to make sense. The film begins in an absolutely surreal manner. The idea behind the girl's parents turning into pigs after eating like them is quite scary, which is exactly what the film wants us to feel. I remember I was thinking why she doesn't sit and eat with them. I have always been such a foodie, I might have as well ended up like them if I were there. And then this girl had to run away and live among the monsters. Each one of them was traumatising, except the woman whom Spider-Eggman convinces by giving her a roasted lizard.
Now I won't go too much in detail for the characters or the story, since I don't think I remember anything correctly. As I write this review I am getting occasional glimpse of some scenes, particularly the slime monster one. So all I'm gonna talk about are the other aspects of this film. First of all, this film is a dream for any postmodernist art lover. The idea of random things happening, the characters who can only exist in a fever dream interacting with the girl and the old woman - everything about this is like something Salvador Dali would be proud of.
The only problem I had in this film is from the plot holes. I could be wrong since I watched it so long back, that too while throwing a tantrum and not wanting to watch this film (I have completely forgotten the part where the black Shy Guy meets the girl; I believe it happens in this film?). The part where the girl tries cleaning the muck from the bath and the slime monster gets upset and start chasing her; how do they suddenly become friends? Just because the monster got tired from chasing her? That scene has never made any sense to me. Also who was that boy who came in the beginning? How come he never got to do the work the girl was doing, irrespective of whether he himself was a monster or a human? Either way it makes the film look like a nightmare, which I'm pretty sure it wasn't trying to.
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (this is the actual name of this film) is the first and by far the only Hayao Miyazaki film I have seen. Even though I don't know much about his signature style, this film gave me a vague idea of how he is different from the conventional anime artists. In case all his films are like this, I'd really hope to see them all. And I'd personally want to apologise for the bad time I gave my sister while watching it.… Expand

Spirited Away is an outstanding movie that takes a simple story and makes so much more of it. I probably missed lots of the Japanese references, but this movie works also for me as Westerner. It is the story of a young girl who gets lost in a magic world where she has to save her parents before she can escape it.

Chihiro, the principal character is the key to this movie. She is vulnerable, brave, resourceful and likable. Most anime relegate girls to the side; there to be saved by the male hero and applaud him. They can be all Chihiro is, but never center stage; always in the shadow of a male figure.

This movie could have fallen for this cliché too. Chihiro meets Haku, a young boy that helps her at the start. But he never takes the lead and doesn’t dominate the movie. In fact, he isn’t in most of the movie. And in the end it is Chihiro who saves Haku. The movie is closely knit. On the surface, it feels like a Japanese version of Alice in Wonderland. It has that same mood, that same strangeness. Some characters, like Yubaba seems like the Queen of Hearts. There is that similar feel, but it never feels like a rip-off.

There are many layers to this movie. It isn’t just that Chihiro herself undergoes a story arc, but where she goes she touches everyone: her optimistic nature and kindness affect others. And where the world of spirits is initially hostile to humans, she earns their respect and eventually changes their nature, as they change her. Yubaba, for instance, changes from a hateful person towards a kinder one. Her baby, a selfish individual who never goes out, changes too, when he travels with Chihiro.

There is also a twist near the end of the movie that is foreshadowed throughout the movie. You might find some things strange(I won’t say what because I don’t want to spoil it), but you discover everything is there for a reason.

I would sincerely recommend if you like a layered story with a likable character. I give it a nine not because it isn’t worth a ten, but I always keep that last number in reserve, just in case there is a movie more perfect than this one in its category.… Expand

Most of the time in many movies and web-series, they show you a few important parts of the main plot which will give you the temptation and curiosity to keep watching the movie in spirited away however, nothing is answered. Everything feels unexplored and left out. I felt like I missed an entire anime behind this. This movie is just about a young girl working chores to find a way to survive in an unexplained world of ghosts at the same time trying to get her parents backas they turned into pigs for eating way too much. Everyone reacts in the most unrealistic way to everything. The worst part is where chihiro was told to recognize where her parents were in a group of pigs she replied "they aren't here" there was no reason for saying that and Studio Ghibli replied, “At the last moment, Chihiro can tell the difference because she has overcome the obstacles and mastered the ” living energy “. That was not a satisfying answer. The animation is beautiful to this day, great voice acting, great sound effects, horrible plot and story telling. … Expand

Certamente, "千と千尋の神隠し" é um filme único.

Toda sua atmosfera e universo próprio são demasiadamente intrigantes. Aos personagens são muito bem desenvolvidos, o visual é excelente - principalmente para quem tiver a oportunidade de assistir aCertamente, "千と千尋の神隠し" é um filme único.

Toda sua atmosfera e universo próprio são demasiadamente intrigantes. Aos personagens são muito bem desenvolvidos, o visual é excelente - principalmente para quem tiver a oportunidade de assistir a versão com mais FPS -, com suas transições suaves e hipnotizantes. A fotografia, no que se diz respeito ao plano aberto, capta muito bem a imensidão do local essa distancia do mundo real. As metáforas e criticas definitivamente não são feitas para serem decifradas de uma unica vez, visto que estão em todo filme. Elas incluem muito e deixam a obra devidamente profunda.

Anyway, super recomendado.

The story is very well written and the protagonist's journey is well developed and very noticeable from the ways that she demonstrates throughout the journey. The characters have charisma and are very original in their own constructions. The world in which the entire film is set is so rich in mythology that we ask several questions, but the film is under no obligation to answer them and this is very pleasant because it makes it full of possibilities. It is a story with a beginning, middle and end, but with short pauses that make us breathe at the right time and make us reflect on the previous event. It's amazing how you identify with the character and that is because she is like us. And because of that fact, we grew up with it. (How nice to see Chihiro's growth.)… Expand

People who say that this is the best animated movie of all time or one of the best are not exaggerating, they are totally right. People who say that this is the best animated movie of all time or one of the best are not exaggerating, they are totally right. There's something about this movie that makes me watch it again and again...I don't understand! This movie is actually pretty straight forward and the story is easy to understand. I mean, after all it's a kids movie, it has to be easy to understand, but what I'm referring to is that despite being a simple story,it has so much to say and t has so many themes and underlying messages (some more subtle than others). I don't know what to like more: The complex and well developed characters, the gorgeous look of the movie, the beautiful score, the genius writing and direction...Really, it has it all.

This movie is a journey, a simple yet fantastic journey that takes us to a creative new world full with so many unique characters while also making us think and see the metaphors and allegories.

This isn't just a movie, this is an experience. I highly doubt there's going to ever be another masterpiece like this in a long time. A 10/10 is just not enough, hell, even an 11/10 isn't enough.… Expand

Immersive films like "Spirited Away" are great for a family movie, and while its clean and silly, the film has a lot of metaphors for the adults to ponder about. Les grosses métaphores sont juste énormes de maladresse, dénonçant grossièrement quelques uns des sept péchés capitaux (arrête de te goinfrer comme un goret, tu vois bien que c'est pas bien...) mais ici mélangés ou plutôt arrangés à la sauce shintoïste des esprits multiples pervertis par les bas penchants typiquement humains. On doit ajouter également les préoccupations écolos du film, bien balourdes elles aussi (la pollution, les allusions au pétrole, tout ça... et gnagnagni et gnagnagna). Sans oublier la glorification du stakhanovisme de l'usine-prison (on est chez Mao là ou quoi ?!). Mouais bref, cause toujours, tu m'intéresses.

Tout ce merdier est long comme un jour sans pain, la musique est japoniaise jusqu'à l'indigestion et l'ensemble est très décousu ainsi que souvent aberrant... L'animation reste ce qu'elle est dans ce genre de dessin animé nippon en 2D, c'est-à-dire assez pénible à voir ; seuls les décors sont peu près corrects... Un voyage à éviter en tout cas !… Expand

Spirited Away is probably the only Hayao Miyazaki movie I think is decent. The art is really the only thing that saves it for me since I couldn't get a feel for the characters outside the animals and minor ones. I'm a bit biased because it's very special to me. I remember first seeing it at 8. And I don't often cry, almost never have, but I bawled my eyes out. This is a great children's adventure movie. The music, animation, story are all fantastic. It sucks you in with a relatable main character and an interesting premise, keeps you entertained with strange and amazing creatures, and makes you think about life, change and growing up. The animation is nothing like I've seen before as a Westerner- you can feel all the painstakingly hard work that must have gone into every frame to make each one simply breathtaking. And the story just flows so dreamlike and effortless. TLDR: it's just so well done, I can't NOT give it a 10. This movie's Endless creativity,spectacular animation and beautiful soundtrack make it one of the most stunning animated films ever. all the while the film perfectly presents themes of entering the real world and coming of age.

This is my third attempt at starting to write this review. Simply because I feel like nothing I could write would manage to encapsulate the transcendent beauty of this picture. Simply because I feel like nothing I could write would manage to encapsulate the transcendent beauty of this picture. Staring at a blank page, though, I felt this is what Hayao Miyazaki must have encountered during his work. Yet, unlike me, for him that did not feel as a burden, but rather an opportunity.

Pictures speak louder than words in 'Spirited Away', a landmark for animation; a piece of art so ravishingly beautiful that even the juggernauts from Disney or Pixar should bask in its glory. The story revolves around Chihiro, a 10 year-old innocent girl lost into a magic world ruled by gods, spirits and witches. But she does not enter there though some fancy flashy portal. It is clear that Miyazaki completely masters the power of animation and of story-telling. The way in which this surreal world is designed is by being constructed by elements from reality. There are buildings, resorts, oceans, villages, trains and train stations. Yet through masterful concepts, it feels surreal not because of how it looks, but rather because of the beings encompassing it and its unusual rules. It is a landmark way of portraying fantastic elements almost like a parallel realm of existence suspended over reality.

Indeed, Chihiro often finds herself gazing towards the sunset and far-away villages from her prison-like resort where she is obliged to work as a staff member for tired spirits. And while these creatures are of great and terrible variety, as incredible as they are, I often found myself staring at the set decoration behind them which is painted with such awe, love and dedication that it often feels as if Miyazaki loses himself in this surreal world by crafting amazing artful and detailed backgrounds, inviting you to wonder and ask yourself what other secrets it holds.

But, with 'Spirited Away', beauty is not only skin-deep. Every single inhabitant of this world is carefully designed to represent his/her personality, the resort in itself being a metaphorical cleansing of one's soul. But in this magical world, Miyazaki weaves animation like no one else does. Emotions like greed, hatred, love, happiness and sadness materialize into weird but beyond-perfectly crafted drawings with bold black lines and color. You can see one's greed literally consuming people when a so-called No Face spirit shows up and begins devouring everything in its sight, even the staff! Also, Chihiro's parents being transformed by their gluttony into pigs... literally! Yet, Chihiro, through her childish innocence remains pure, and is her purity which guide her through this insane realm by befriending every single inhabitant of it.

I could go on forever, but I know my limits in writing. If I was as good at expressing myself as Hayao Miyazaki is at animation, this review would have been able to comprehend this film's greatness. But I am not, and so I will stop and encourage you to experience it for yourself.… Expand

Some of Ghibli's finest work. This very movie has opened up the world of Japanese animation to me. Like most other Ghibli movies, Spirited Away has a fine plot with a main character that you can emotionally attach to. The animation quality is top-notch. A must watch, even for people that do not think they will like Japanese animation (like I thought).… Expand

What at dream. It was probably the first anime movie I saw. And it was stunning.
