"Will they kill me, do you think?" Don't go into 'Spencer' expecting an ordinary little biopic about Princess Diana. Nope, this is a straight up psychological art house horror thriller. 'Spencer' brilliantly captures the feeling of dread in"Will they kill me, do you think?" Don't go into 'Spencer' expecting an ordinary little biopic about Princess Diana. Nope, this is a straight up psychological art house horror thriller. 'Spencer' brilliantly captures the feeling of dread in an isolated foreign space surround by strangers. The royal family themselves are freaking creepy, always watching, always judging.

I must be honest, I wasn't a big fan of Kristen Stewart's recent work, as it never wowed me, and I wasn't convinced that she's improved since Twilight. But man, she's fantastic in this movie and it's one of her best performances to date. Stewart manages to portray Princess Diana in a new light that we haven't really seen before. In my opinion, her other movies failed to show her versatility as an actor, where I fully believe this movie did her justice. I'm just glad this movie won me over.

On the other hand, Timothy Spall is excellent in this movie, and another stand out performance. If you are aware of Spall as an actor, then this isn't surprising news, but I feel it needs repeating. I found him very eerie and overbearing. He plays a man with an eagle eye; he watches everything and everyone in the royal family at Sandringham House.

The major thing that this movie made me realise is that in Diana's life it's the people that kept her mentally and emotionally grounded. Her two sons, her assistant (Sally Hawkins, who is very good in the small scenes she has), and the chef played by Sean Harris, who is someone you would not think of being important.

Sean Harris is a very underrated actor that I wished people talked about more. Harris is known for playing sinister roles, but here I thought he was really sweet and shows a softer side. He's got an interesting sounding voice as well. Jack Farthing as Prince Charles does a great job playing a slimy over-privileged **** Stella Gonet as the Queen who I found really unsettling, especially her dagger eyes.

There's one scene at the dinner table with the other royal family that is one of the most intense things ever. It was anxiety level stress that made my heart racing. All thanks to Pablo Larraín claustrophobic and unique directing. Complimented by Johnny Greenwood's atmospheric, free flowing and tense score.

While I know that certain elements of the movie are fiction, but then again, the movie begins with a title card "based on a tragic fable" and I feel like the movie is playing into the nightmarish fair tale of an iconic figure in history. Diana's life in royalty was no fairy tale, but a Brothers Grimm tale.

Overall rating: The movie has metaphors to ghost, ghost of the past, ghost of old tradition. People who follow tradition isn't too kind to rarity. Great movie.

Expand

I can handle a slow-paced film. What I can't handle is boring.

Boring, boring, boring movie. Irritating soundtrack that thinks being blaring loud makes your movie more dramatic. Shots of people walking or driving that don't spare you one second of the slogging because this movie needed to be two hours long for some reason. The supporting cast all talk like lobotomy patients. Everything is just so drab and grey and dull to look at. But then at the end when she's happy ohhhh everything's so colourful oh goodness gracious singing pop songs in the car happy day visual symbolism mhmmm great cinematography :)

Folks are saying Kristen Stewart did a fantastic job. I guess talkinginhushedtonesreallyfastandtersely constitutes good acting. The trouble is the whole movie makes Princess Diana's plight seem pointless because she could just **** LEAVE

AT ANY TIME, APPARENTLY.

Am I missing something? In a thematic sense, maybe. But in a literal sense, I missed, like, a quarter of the movie because it put me to goddamn sleep in the theatre.

Like, I don't care if the movie's about Diana's depression, there have to be better ways to get your point across than making me want to off myself.

Costumes were nice, at least.

I saw this movie on a date and we walked out after the first dinner scene as it made no sense to us at all. Might be interesting if you are very invested in the lives of the most boring family on earth but if you don’t know much don’t watch this. It explains nothing at all and just expects you to understand without putting in the effort. Even looking at it like that this movie doesn’t really add any value as it’s not an accurate reenactment and basically was just made to show in 2 hours how miserable Diana was. Expand

This “imagined” story is set at Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham Estate over the Christmas weekend, 1991. Essentially, we’re given an extreme close-up at the mental stage of Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) as she struggles with the royal family’s demands and her own discontent. The expected characters are there, as are some of the staff for interactions, but the large portion is dominated by Diana's dilemnas. The script is somewhat repetitive, the pace drags at times and the music is dominated by horribly distracting free-form jazz (maybe to mirror her inner discord). Stewart’s nuanced creation deftly walks the line between despondent, sweet and angry. Whether what happens in the film is remotely real, Stewart’s performance and the fabulous fashions that she wears are the film’s greatest assets. Expand

The director masterfully establishes claustrophobia entrapping protagonist within minutes, then fleshes out the frigidity and oppressive nature of a royal Christmas, as Spencer draws on. This is clearly an angry and anti-royalist film which mirrors the recent representation Markle gave of her time in 'the family.' Kristen Stewart was excellent in this challenging role, as a woman falling apart (A Woman Under the Influence) at the seams, crying or tearing up in nearly every shot. A well-made, but somewhat forgettable film, due to it's poetic license. Expand

What an incredibly haunting and beautiful movie.
I believe that many people were, unfortunately, expecting a biopic. However, it is clear that this film takes place throughout 3 days in Christmas (Prior to Diana's separation from Charles). Kristen Stewart portrayed Diana wonderfully during her lowest moments, all the way through her catharsis in the end (all the while showing what a caring and loving mother she was). The writers also did an amazing job showing the lack of empathy and double standard that comes with a royal title. This was not a movie about the royal family; this was about Diana and the private humiliation she had to endure, in addition to the temporary psychosis she may have experienced due to her 10+ year eating disorder. The cinematography was breathtaking and I would gladly recommend Spencer to anyone. Watch it without prejudice and appreciate the time and effort that went into this amazing project.

"The idea [was] to replicate, redo, rethink Kubrick's 'Shining'": but the director begins the opening credits by writing that he intends to tell a tragedy, not a horror. Jackie is not Diana Spencer, the First Lady is not Lady D: Natalie Portman was shown lost immediately after her husband was killed, Kristen Stewart is the "sad princess" as grew up with too many Disney fables that led her full of naivety and self-harm to the "wedding of the century". A victimistic story that is unsavable even by Pablo Larraín, Steven Knight and Jonny Greenwood. On the subject Elton John had already given the maximum of kitsch with "Candle in the Wind 1997".

Director Pablo Larraín borrows modern history icon Princess Diana to build a dramatic essay. And it works out beautifully.

To say Princess Diana was an impactful person in society falls short, not only because she was a wonderful and charismatic person, but she had quite enough controversy around her to call the world´s attention, at the time and as of now. Spencer takes the general knowledges we have about Diana´s life, such as her complicated marriage with Prince Charles, her eating disorders, depression along with suicide attempts, and some affairs she might have had herself. All of which buildup a tense and dramatic portrait of Diana´s most critical emotional moments in her life. So no, don´t expect a chronological series of events which lead to Diana´s tragical death in 1997. The film mixes up both fictional and historic events into a three-day span during a royal holiday festivity, filled with wonderful costume and set designs.

Spencer presents a masterful soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood, that if you have seen Phantom Thread (2017), you know that he is very capable of embracing the audience in situational settings. We are also offered with a fantastic cinematography by Claire Mathon, that has already done a masterclass work in Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), but this time, the visuals make us feel like we are being taken back to 1991, as if we were watching The Silence of the Lambs (1991) for the first time. And last but not least, the breathtaking performance of Diana by Kristen Stewart, who has had her acting capabilities doubted throughout her whole career, finally having a chance to prove herself in this film, and boy does she deliver. Although her expressions are monotonous at times, the majority of the time she projects the true emotion of how Diana must have been feeling against every discomfort he had to confront.

There is a scene at the last twenty minutes of the movie, where a female character (Maggie), who is Diana´s wardrobe, that was practically her only friend, confesses she is in love with her. During the hole film you can perceive her as a refuge for Diana, an instrument that allows her to release all her bad feelings, and although there are no explicit lesbian interactions, this mentioned moment ends to be an awkward and unnecessary addition, considering there is no living proof of Princess Diana to have had lesbian conducts or approaches. The little joys in life, going to McDonalds to get a simple cheeseburger, taking a walk without being disturbed, spend Christmas with your pajamas on, all of which Diana can´t have and she really wishes to do, just make us reflect how fortunate we are of having an ordinary life and how Diana, among other public figures had all of this taken away from them. Spencer is Diana´s last name of birth, and it being the film´s title fits perfectly, as the Princess all throughout the film fights adversities to once again, find who she really is, as she is giving up on monarchy, we can see it represented on the pearl necklace she carries, which signifies Diana´s frustration towards Charles´ affair. Her children are the main reason of holding back. There´s so much things left to say about this film, but don´t wanting to ruin the experience, I´ll highly recommend it to people that love the drama genre, people that want to see character development, enjoy reflexive dialogues, all being complemented with incredible art development. Serious consideration has to be taken on this film for academy awards on all departments that have been discussed. Easily one of the best films of 2021.

But I’m bewildered, to put it mildly this was NOT good. I realize this is an interpretation not autobiographical so I did my best to suspend my judgment but it was impossible. It felt like Kristen Stewart in Princess Diana cosplay shooting a moody perfume commercial/horror movie. Despite it’s interesting takes, the screenplay felt insincere and gimmicky.
