film that could have been really interesting but once again they wanted to insert a hypothetical lesbian relationship of the princess (never documented) just to be politically correct… shame

What an incredibly haunting and beautiful movie.
I believe that many people were, unfortunately, expecting a biopic. However, it is clear that this film takes place throughout 3 days in Christmas (Prior to Diana's separation from Charles). Kristen Stewart portrayed Diana wonderfully during her lowest moments, all the way through her catharsis in the end (all the while showing what a caring and loving mother she was). The writers also did an amazing job showing the lack of empathy and double standard that comes with a royal title. This was not a movie about the royal family; this was about Diana and the private humiliation she had to endure, in addition to the temporary psychosis she may have experienced due to her 10+ year eating disorder. The cinematography was breathtaking and I would gladly recommend Spencer to anyone. Watch it without prejudice and appreciate the time and effort that went into this amazing project.

(Mauro Lanari)
"The idea [was] to replicate, redo, rethink Kubrick's 'Shining'": but the director begins the opening credits by writing that he intends to tell a tragedy, not a horror. Jackie is not Diana Spencer, the First Lady is not Lady D: Natalie Portman was shown lost immediately after her husband was killed, Kristen Stewart is the "sad princess" as grew up with too many Disney fables that led her full of naivety and self-harm to the "wedding of the century". A victimistic story that is unsavable even by Pablo Larraín, Steven Knight and Jonny Greenwood. On the subject Elton John had already given the maximum of kitsch with "Candle in the Wind 1997".

Kristen Stewart stars in the best female performance of the year and plunges us into a labyrinth of complex emotions that, like a fable, has Diana Princess of Wales as the protagonist. The narrative could not be more suggestive and the character, so well built, has enough strength to practically stand alone for a large part of the footage. I thought it was a great film and a great point of view on this beloved character, who offers us in this invented fiction moving moments that could well have been true. Expand

Director Pablo Larraín borrows modern history icon Princess Diana to build a dramatic essay. And it works out beautifully.

To say Princess Diana was an impactful person in society falls short, not only because she was a wonderful and charismatic person, but she had quite enough controversy around her to call the world´s attention, at the time and as of now. Spencer takes the general knowledges we have about Diana´s life, such as her complicated marriage with Prince Charles, her eating disorders, depression along with suicide attempts, and some affairs she might have had herself. All of which buildup a tense and dramatic portrait of Diana´s most critical emotional moments in her life. So no, don´t expect a chronological series of events which lead to Diana´s tragical death in 1997. The film mixes up both fictional and historic events into a three-day span during a royal holiday festivity, filled with wonderful costume and set designs.

Spencer presents a masterful soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood, that if you have seen Phantom Thread (2017), you know that he is very capable of embracing the audience in situational settings. We are also offered with a fantastic cinematography by Claire Mathon, that has already done a masterclass work in Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), but this time, the visuals make us feel like we are being taken back to 1991, as if we were watching The Silence of the Lambs (1991) for the first time. And last but not least, the breathtaking performance of Diana by Kristen Stewart, who has had her acting capabilities doubted throughout her whole career, finally having a chance to prove herself in this film, and boy does she deliver. Although her expressions are monotonous at times, the majority of the time she projects the true emotion of how Diana must have been feeling against every discomfort he had to confront.

There is a scene at the last twenty minutes of the movie, where a female character (Maggie), who is Diana´s wardrobe, that was practically her only friend, confesses she is in love with her. During the hole film you can perceive her as a refuge for Diana, an instrument that allows her to release all her bad feelings, and although there are no explicit lesbian interactions, this mentioned moment ends to be an awkward and unnecessary addition, considering there is no living proof of Princess Diana to have had lesbian conducts or approaches. The little joys in life, going to McDonalds to get a simple cheeseburger, taking a walk without being disturbed, spend Christmas with your pajamas on, all of which Diana can´t have and she really wishes to do, just make us reflect how fortunate we are of having an ordinary life and how Diana, among other public figures had all of this taken away from them. Spencer is Diana´s last name of birth, and it being the film´s title fits perfectly, as the Princess all throughout the film fights adversities to once again, find who she really is, as she is giving up on monarchy, we can see it represented on the pearl necklace she carries, which signifies Diana´s frustration towards Charles´ affair. Her children are the main reason of holding back. There´s so much things left to say about this film, but don´t wanting to ruin the experience, I´ll highly recommend it to people that love the drama genre, people that want to see character development, enjoy reflexive dialogues, all being complemented with incredible art development. Serious consideration has to be taken on this film for academy awards on all departments that have been discussed. Easily one of the best films of 2021.

But I’m bewildered, to put it mildly this was NOT good. I realize this is an interpretation not autobiographical so I did my best to suspend my judgment but it was impossible. It felt like Kristen Stewart in Princess Diana cosplay shooting a moody perfume commercial/horror movie. Despite it’s interesting takes, the screenplay felt insincere and gimmicky. I never really cared for the royal family, but if I were William or Harry I’d feel insulted they used the memory of my mother for this film. Sorry but I have to agree with SAG. Expand

I mean, Kristen Stewart gives a good performance, but I didn't connect with her, as I did with, for example, Olivia Colman in 'The Lost Daughter.' Now that kept me thinking for days. 'Spencer' looks amazing, but I think it's somewhat shallow. Forcing the audience to watch someone victimizing herself for two hours is exhausting. And the whole discourse about wanting to be normal is kind of cringey. Oh, and that twist ending that attempts to introduce a queer plot was a jump scare. Expand

Excellent drama.

Spencer is a superbly moving, extremely poetic, and consistently beautiful drama that has much more in common with psychological horror than a normal period drama.

Kristen Stewart delivers a phenomenal performance as Diana, fully embodying her without ever sounding like a parody. Sally Hawkins, Sean Harris, Jack Farthing and Timothy Spall are great.

Pablo Larraín's direction is excellent, it's extremely well shot, stylish and visually stunning. The costumes are fantastic. He also has an extremely good rhythm and Jonny Greenwood's music is amazing.

The director masterfully establishes claustrophobia entrapping protagonist within minutes, then fleshes out the frigidity and oppressive nature of a royal Christmas, as Spencer draws on. This is clearly an angry and anti-royalist film which mirrors the recent representation Markle gave of her time in 'the family.' Kristen Stewart was excellent in this challenging role, as a woman falling apart (A Woman Under the Influence) at the seams, crying or tearing up in nearly every shot. A well-made, but somewhat forgettable film, due to it's poetic license. Expand

Set during Princess Diana’s Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England. Diana is struggling with mental health issues leading up to her divorce from Prince Charles.

Immediately I just need to say that Kristen Stewart is absolutely brilliant in Spencer and that’s quite high praise coming from me. I can’t say I rated her as an actress and I really haven’t seen her in anything since a certain overrated vampire franchise. She has clearly come a long way since then and shows her incredible acting abilities as the deeply unhappy Diana. The entire film is set over the course of three days which allows you to descend into the lonely, paranoid and claustrophobic environment Diana was living in at the time. It’s made all the more uncomfortable with the use of music, particularly the dissonance strings that will really set you on edge. I didn’t think Jonny Greenwood could top his Phantom Thread score but the music for Spencer is absolutely stunning. Very much elevating the haunting and unsettling atmosphere. If like me you’re not exactly overly familiar with the history of the royal family or anything that goes on in The Crown don’t let that stop you from seeing Spencer.

I didn’t expect to like Spencer as much as I did but it’s truly a wonderful film, expertly made with a standout performance from Kristen Stewart. A thought-provoking tragedy that’s not to be missed. It’s also technically a Christmas movie so if you’ve managed to cross every other Christmas movie on your list be sure to check it out. Highly recommended.

Read before you watch...

The movie itself says... A fable about a true tragedy. We all know the general story of the marriage between Diana and Charles. This movie is not claiming any sort of truth but rather a story of what it might've been like based on interviews and such. Don't go in thinking you're going to get an exact nonfiction.

With that being said, it is incredibly well done. The acting, the vision, the music. And as nothing is perfect, there are one or two slow parts but nothing that I'd discriminate for.

The music has a hint of edge to it; that horror movie scratch with piano and violin. But what a great throwback when the last song in the movie plays.

Visually the movie is beautiful.

The acting. Yup. Could be her best role yet, though her Joan Jett performance in The Runaways 11 years ago was dynamite as well. While she doesn't LOOK exactly like Diana, her portrayal of her is fantastic. Not sure if it's good enough to win the Oscar but the talk of nomination seems on point from where I was sitting.

If you are interested in the royal family, the story of Diana or just a badass female who gave up the opportunity to be a princess to gain her Self, then I recommend this movie.

When you like who you are, who needs a crown anyway?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amei o filme.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of Kristen’s best performance so far, she gives such a beautiful perspctive of Lady Di, such an iconic persona. You can truly see the princess through Pablo Larrain’s lens. The music, the performances, the outfits, everything that creates this visual masterpiece helps to build a dive inside this bright, unique mind that was Diana. Expand

Foreboding, stylistic, heavy with symbolism, and featuring a can’t-miss, sure-to-be legendary performance by Kristen Stewart, Spencer recalls not only Larrain’s earlier masterpiece Jackie, but also recalls some of the finest works of psychological horror. Its rejection of social expectations and elitism make it the royal family version of The Graduate. The ending is cinematic perfection. Review 1: With touches of Kubrick and Polanski, Spencer is a brilliant, gorgeously-shot film - both eerie and beautiful, featuring a fantastic Kristen Stewart performance. A worthy companion piece to Jackie, Spencer has moments and images that will stay with you long after the film is finished. Expand

It’s everything I wanted it to be and more. I have to say that Kristen Stewart’s performance as Princess Diana is absolutely amazing. It’s my favorite performance of the year so far and absolutely deserves the Oscar for Best Actress next year. Stewart is unrecognizable here and I loved that. All of the other performances were great as well especially from Timothy Spall and Sally Hawkins. The costumes are on point here. Each of them helps contribute to Diana’s mood and tone of the overall scene which was amazing. The costumes help us understand Diana’s mood and what she is thinking without directly telling us. The direction, cinematography, and writing are all amazing as well. Pablo Larraín does an amazing job at showing and not telling us Diana’s mood unless it was absolutely necessary and his style contributes greatly to the final product. The writing does a fantastic job at showing us someone who is crumbling under the weight of being a member of the Royal family and feeling the need to just run. The cinematography looks stellar here. It looks like a film that came straight out of the 1990s in a good way. The music has a jazzy feel to it which helps us show the impulsiveness of Diana in this film. I also loved how we get almost dream sequences here where we see how Diana is feeling and what she wants to do. Those scenes feel very uncomfortable at points and it works beautifully. All of these qualities come together beautifully to show us the inside of Diana Spencer. Please go check this out when you can but know it’s a much more different kind of biopic. Expand
