Maybe It is not the finest, but I think thiz is one of his best performance so far. DiCaprio collaborates the fourth time with Martin Scorsese, the last three are: GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002), THE AVIATOR (2004), and THE DEPARTED (2006). Scorsese himself is a well-grounded drama Director. His previous memorable classics are: TAXI DRIVER (1976), RAGING BULL (1980), and GOODFELLAS (1990). It is about Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio), an US Marshall comes to the island to investigates some mysterious case. The Island is the prison facility for mental illness. Thiz movie supported by high-caliber Casts, such as: Ben Kingsley, Mark Rufallo, Mark Von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, plus Michelle Williams. The screenplay on thiz movie is grandeur. Scorsese with his experiences arranged every scene effectively. The exploration is classic, we even could seen **** atmosphere here. The movie scores also help a lot to build such an intensive tension. The great example was on the opening scene, when Daniels and his partner arrived on the island for the first time. When they observe the surroundings preserves by maximum securities, the gates open one by one. It is just a usual scene, but the scores multiply it into ten times thrill. The twist ending is meant to be shocking. But unfortunately, I already see it where the story will go in the middle of the movie. When a conversation between Daniels and Rachel (Patricia Clarkson) on the scene in the cave. Daniels said angrily, I am an US Marshall, No one can stop me! (Spoiler Alert!) That is the time I clearly knew he was the patient. In the end, if we got a movie that every scene put in for a reason. That is the time when you already got an effective and flawless movie. Scorsese scores again!

It's been a while since I've simply sat after watching a movie and just had to think about all the events that occurred throughout. Attention to detail has me pleased but I find there are irrelevant scenes within the movie that honestly just drags out the movie to become slower and just aren't needed. Probably one of the most non-predictable movies I've seen for a while as well in large thanks to DiCaprio and Ruffalo's performances who had me thoroughly convinced. Perhaps the ending requires just a fraction more closure, but otherwise, a great movie. Expand

And isn't that what art is about? New expression to ones self? I'm not saying this is a ground breaking film, just that it pushes the style of a vision. It just so happens that this vision is through the eyes of m.s.. The story is strong enough to compel you to the end of the journey. And the acting is more than satisfactory in all cases. The weakest portion of the entry is probably the dialogue. Some of the lesser characters just seem to deliver the line and exit stage left. Which don't help the film but don't necessarily hurt it either. In the end though it is the direction and attention to detail of not just the setting, pacing, acting, or genre but style brought to all of the above. Watch it again and again then tell me I'm wrong. It's a nice change but also a concerning knock on the head when a film comes along and truly makes you question your entire beliefs and capabilities of an aspiring filmmaker, whether it be storytelling, editing or simply characterIt's a nice change but also a concerning knock on the head when a film comes along and truly makes you question your entire beliefs and capabilities of an aspiring filmmaker, whether it be storytelling, editing or simply character development, all these factors are of upmost importance.
But when Martin Scorsese comes along and absolutely turns everything on its head with Shutter Island, it always makes you question if you are able to tease, surprise and entertain the audience, something this film does over and over again with merit.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Teddy Daniels, a US Marshal who, along with his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) are sent to the island in question, which is the base for a mental institution for the most dangerous criminally insane patients in the US.
They are sent due to the mysterious disappearance of a patient, but upon their arrival everything is not as it seems, the island is very military looking and the leading psychiatrist at the hospital, Dr Cawley (Ben Kingsley) seems very reluctant and shady when the marshals seek help in their investigation.
Teddy, meanwhile, is having visions of when he was a soldier during the Dachau liberation.
But as the film progresses, we realise that Teddy may have other reasons for taking the case, but his mind and his past soon unravel and is noticed by everyone surrounding him, which slowly eats away at his deteriorating confidence within the confines of the island.
Shutter Island puts the viewer firmly in the drivers seat, it has been perfectly filmed and edited with purposeful continuity errors so as the viewer can determine what exactly is going on, because the ending of this remarkable film will leave you shocked and confused, but will also leave you with having a lengthy debate with your friends as to what exactly was happening.
Each character is pivotal to the film and they play their part well, we aren't always sure whose side exactly they are on and we are never quite sure what exactly is going on, but this makes for an excellent thriller and one of the most thought provoking films in a while.
There are plenty of names floating around in this film that may leave you a little seasick, but it is truly magical the work that has been done, and you would be hard-pressed to find a film that truly digs into what you believe to be fact, and who you believe to be truthful.
Fantastic, thrilling and cleverly constructed work, another bright Scorsese moment.

I wasThat Shutter island is carried by Leonardo DiCaprio took me a bit by surprise for I never took him as an strong actor. Not because I think him bad, mind you, just that I wouldn't have named him as one of the great actors of our time. I was wrong to think that.

Shutter island is DiCaprio's movie for he is at the center of it. He is supported by a fine cast made up out of people like Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo. Yet this movie, with the script it has, is his movie for it is kind of isolation movie.
It starts out quite innocently with DiCaprio and Ruffalo as two us marshals send to an island that is a mental asylum for insane criminals to investigate the disappearance of one of the prisoners.. The isolation sets in when a spell of bad weather is announced that will cut of the island of from the mainland.

As the investigation gets underway the weather worsens and the plot thickens as the disappearance of the prisoner is linked to happenings in DiCaprio's past. The foul weather, eventually turning into a hurricane, denotes the progress into madness of the story. As DiCaprio digs deeper, dark happenings are uprooted and soon enough it isn't just the island that is isolated, but DiCaprio from the rest island's inhabitants. Who is to be trusted, what is true and is he being tricked? It is time for paranoia to set in.

How can you determine what is wrong when you can not trust anyone to be truthful, not even your partner. When you cannot ask: do you see what I see, when you can not trust the other. The only way for DiCaprio is to find evidence for his suspicions. But DiCaprio even starts to question his own senses. How that eventually works out would reveal the plot. Go and see the movie.

Admittedly, the movie's story is a bit too far fetched to be believable and might harbor some big plot holes on close scrutiny, but it is a good movie nevertheless. It is nice to see things come together as script, acting, directing and cinematography join hands to make this movie happen.

This whole movie is so beautifully shot and acted that certain scenes are stuck on loop inside my head. You could say it's staying with me for days. Almost like a piece of gum stuck to your shoe. Follows you everywhere you go and is often hard to get off.

While it's a bit oblivious where the movie is a heading, but on a re-watch I discovered so many hidden details that made re-watching it feel so fresh. Just goes to show why Scorsese is a master of his craft.

On The Nature Of Daylight by Max Richter is my favorite sad track.

But still, 2010 was a terrible year for Leonardo Dicaprio. I mean both of his marriages fell apart in both 'Inception' and this movie. Poor guy. My condolences to the children as well.

It had a truly intriguing concept and my 17-year old sister was raving about how brilliant the film was. Shutter Island is not Scorsesse's best, but it was atmospheric, clever, incredibly thought-provoking and somewhat disturbing too.

I do agree it is too long and that it drags in places, that Shutter Island is still very impressive and gripping. The cinematography is great, dark, expressionistic and Gothic. Same with the scenery which is both picturesque and bleak, while the direction is superb, almost operatic and imaginative. The screenplay is intelligent and the plot gripping and clever, however Shutter Island is one of those films that if you miss a line of dialogue or a plot point you are in danger of missing something important. I also liked the music- admittedly the repeated bass motif which has a knock-on-the-door effect makes us think immediately that something out of the ordinary is going to happen but I have to admit it was haunting, while the Mahler chamber music piece along with the more gut-wrenching images at Dacchau was put to effective use, though coming from a classical music enthusiast I never knew Mahler wrote chamber music.

The acting is very good, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley are both excellent, and Mark Ruffalo was surprisingly good too. Max Von Sydow is also good, and although I wasn't sure about Michelle Williams at first she was suitably eerie and haunting. Finally the ending, some have said it was clever, others were underwhelmed by it. For me, I found it very clever and it was actually the part of the film that made me think about most. Of course it leaves questions rather than answers, but I think that was the point, it is ambiguous and open to interpretation and I certainly would have never thought of that. There could also be the possibility that there is no right or wrong answer, we are left to wonder for ourselves whether he was sane or not, and I think that was a reason for why the film ended inconclusively- I for one asked myself what did happen to Ted?

Overall, very gripping and clever, with an ending that really makes you think. It is not what I consider a perfect film, but the direction and acting makes up for any misgivings. Plus it is probably a film you need to see more than once to completely understand or appreciate it. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Honestly speaking, it is one of the greatest films of the decade. DiCaprio featured in two movies in 2010, the other one being "Inception". Both were excellent. To this day, they are some of the best cinematic experience I have ever had. That being said, I found "Shutter Island" to be much more superior, as "Inception" feels a little bit of a mumbo jumbo many times. .
.
Good : "Shutter Island" is simply a masterpiece. The beginning of the movie suggests a very basic plot of a detective story, possibly a thriller. As the movie progresses, the plot becomes bigger and bigger with more and more complexity added to it. The way this happens is incredible. The pacing is really good. That is what makes the movie so interesting. And, even though the movie gets more complex, it is not difficult to keep up with the major plot points. And, the final twist is one of the best plot twists I have ever seen. I did not expect it at all. And, like the main character portrayed by DiCaprio, we are not ready to believe what is being told until a lot of reveals finally convince us. There are a lot of many things that might seem to be pointless before the final twist which are totally relevant with the story that is actually being told. The character of Edward Daniels is superbly written. We get to know where the character is coming from and we can get behind the character - yet another excellent thing about this movie. There are some dream sequences that seems like a filler, but is a major indication to the reveal. There are quite many "illusions" which feel very real, but carry no real meaning in the end. There are many additional things which may seem like a diversion from the story being told, but are actually enhancing it. Some dialogues between the main character and an imprisoned character get a very different interpretation after it's all set and done. So much of a complex story, yet no giant inconsistencies at all. It's just superbly written and directed and acted. It's totally different from "Memento" (2000) but still, has a lot of similarities. We get into the main character's head and we just get his interpretations, different types though. Towards the end, we don't want to step fully outside his head, but when we finally do, it's mind blowing. The ending moments were conceived by many to be confusing. But, if you keep up with the entire story, it's meaning is quite obvious. The movie is dark and psychologically engrossing. Yet it does have a short lived and very brief happy moment with the tiny plotline involving Dr. Cawley's motives. That's all I can say without getting into complete spoilers. Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsly have given some of the great performances till date. I don't have anything that bugged me. So no mixed or bad aspects of the film. .
.
Conclusion : On the whole, for me, it's the movie of the decade. The decade is almost over, and still I have not got any movie in the league of "Shutter Island". It's a very engaging and thrilling movie. It's one of those films I consider to be an all time great. .

‘Which would be worse, to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?'

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first thing I noticed about this film was that it features particularly loud music from the start, quite atmospheric, dour music, the type used to help cause a shudder to go down your spine. At times its quite remorseful in tone and others its quite sinister - think instrumentals with violins and piano.

The setting is quite creepy, often shown in dark light and with stormy weather and the fact that some of the characters are fairly anonymised, in as much as not a great deal is known about them individually, adds to the spookiness.

I also noticed quite early on that the contrast seemed quite high, as far as the colours were concerned - at times it appears as if people almost glow, again giving an almost ethereal feel, particularly in flashback or dream type scenes.

This is quite a dramatic and unsettling film, in regards to the passionate dialogue present at times, the flashbacks of events from the past, events which haunt Teddy. There are some quite bloody scenes, with multiple bodies in pools of blood, which appear quite suddenly and are certainly likely to unsettle, if not outright scare the viewer. I suppose, as far as genres are concerned, I'd say this is more of a mystery thriller than a horror film as such, as it isn't a sort of typical 'slasher flick' and the story that Teddy Daniels finds himself trying to slowly uncover, is quite a mysterious one. The plot pace moves tantalisingly slow, which can be quite frustrating - as a viewer, I found myself willing Teddy to continue his searches, to uncover the truth behind the rumours and the history of the secluded and isolated island hospital.

As the story unfolds, heading towards its conclusions, I felt that it became a bit predictable. The essential story, or where it leads to/ends, is one thats been covered by numerous other films in the past and dare I say it, felt a bit cliched. I think a part of me was hoping for a more scientific based ending somehow. It felt like quite a letdown, its quite a plot twist but not an original one.

I do feel like this was a pretty engrossing, creepy and sinister film and I felt that Leonardo DiCaprio did well in portraying the main character of Teddy Daniels, coming across as a steely, determined cop wanting to get to the bottom of whats going on behind the scenes at the islands hospital. He has a convincing look of suspicion and doubt. Other well known cast members include Ben Kingsley, who plays Dr. Cawley - the head doctor who runs the hospital, who has a quite strong, domineering presence and makes for a good adversary for Teddy. Michelle Williams portrays Delores, Teddy's wife, who doesn't have much screen time but plays the role of a 1950s wife pretty well. Mark Ruffalo also appears as Teddy's partner, Chuck.

Content wise, there is some strong language, generally tense, unsettling and spooky scenes and some moderate violence (more specifically bloody violence), hence it having a 15 rating.
This film is directed by Martin Scorsese (given its content). Its certainly quite a visually stylish film, although im not sure i'd count it as his best film as such (others including 'Goodfellas', 'Gangs of New York' and 'The Aviator').

Overall I'm not sure if I would recommend this title as such. I probably wouldn't, as there are other psychological thrillers with less cliches. This title started off well and I felt it had a fair amount of potential but the way the story was concluded just spoilt it for me personally as I felt it was quite cliched. Once your aware of the full story, your unlikely to want to watch it again - its one of those films that you'd see in totally different eyes from the start after finding out the end. The film does feature a good cast and it is fairly engrossing, thus its not all bad but overall I wouldn't specifically recommend it.

This is a tasteless movie.
At the end of it I had nothing but a feeling of sadness for the wasted time.
It is one of those movies that one remembers nothing of it after a few days.
And Leonardo DiCaprio was a bad choice for this role. Nothing to do with his style or quality, but this role demands a different type of actor.

Movie has an incoherent plot, ending with a annoying twist, which makes entire thing worse.

Teddy and Chuck are two FBI marshals assigned to find out how a psychopath woman escaped from Criminal Insanity Hospital Prison in Shutter Island.
They are not welcomed and cooperated by the doctors, and officers there.
As the events unfold, Teddy confess to Chuck that he wanted this assignment in order to found out the murderer his wife, Andrew.
According to him, Andrew murdered his wife by burning their house. And Teddy thinks he is in this hospital, and wants to punish him himself.
But as the story goes, Teddy becomes unstable.
And at the end, story takes a big twist. Teddy is in fact Andrew.
He was a sick person himself at the hospital.
He was fooling himself and tries to fool others by such a story he invented himself.
And the head psychologist at hospital arranged the plot to enable him to play what he believes.
Because head psychologist believed that in this way Teddy will come to a point where he will consciously accept the fact that he is Andrew and killed his wife.
In fact nine months ago, he confessed that he killed his wife.
But after that he again started playing this theatre.
Indeed Teddy is Andrew and killed his insane wife, because she has drawn their kids.

At the end, Teddy accepted all the truth consciously, but also chooses to continue to play the game.
And as a result of it he will get lobotomy operation, a brain surgery to turn him to a controlled person.
Because hospital is also brain research center, and using hopeless cases for Government test, and research programs.

**** Like Fight Club if it was written by a Walrus in a wheelchair. Someone got a tattoo of this movie and I’m enraged.

A very well made psychological movie. It’s a great-looking, highly stylized, very intense thriller in the vein of Martin Scorsese’s earlier Cape Fear (1991). The film was adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane.
