Once upon a time there lived an ogre named Shrek. Shrek lived a peaceful life of solitude until one day his peace his destroyed by an invasion of fairy tale characters who have all been banished from their kingdom.

Shrek doesn’t quite reach the highs of Pixar’s best movies, but a fun cast of characters provide plenty of laughs for both adults and children.

Like many other Gen Z kids, I saw this movie when I was young and really liked it, but overtime I started to forget it, until I gradually noticed the characters being used in memes. One day I decided to rewatch the movie, and it held up pretty well. But in case anyone forgot what it was about, here's the plot:

The movie starts off with Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) living life in his swamp, minding his own business. That is, until a bunch of fairy tale people show up on his doorstep, escaping from the cruel Lord Farquaad.

And thus begins our hero's journey, as he sets out to confront Farquaad and get his swamp back. Along the way, he meets Donkey (voiced by the equally incomparable Eddie Murphy), a wisecracking sidekick who provides some much-needed comic relief. Their journey leads them to save Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz), and along the way, they start to fall in love. But Fiona has a dark secret: that she turned into an orc at night. This leads to some misunderstandings, but in the end they end up together and live happily ever after in the swamp—well, at least until the second movie.

The thing I love about Shrek is how it plays with the conventions of fairy tales. Instead of the typical prince charming rescuing the damsel in distress, we have an ogre rescuing a princess who's more than capable of taking care of herself. And let's not forget about Farquaad, who's basically a Napoleon complex personified. But let's not forget the core story of the film. The touching message about accepting others for who they are: Shrek may be an ogre, but he has a heart of gold and shows compassion and kindness to those around him. And through Fiona, he learns that true beauty comes from within.

The film is full of hilarious jokes, dark humor, and pop culture references. Who could forget the gingerbread man's torture scene, where Lord Farquaad asks him about the muffin man? And let's not forget the iconic opening scene with the music from "All Stars" by Smash Mouth.

But Shrek's influence doesn't just stop at the jokes and witty dialogue. It has had a huge impact on meme culture. The film's success has spawned numerous memes and made it an internet cultural icon. One example of how deeply ingrained this film has become in our collective psyche is the notorious "Shrek is love, Shrek is life" meme.

Overall, Shrek is a timeless classic that has its place in cinematic and memetic history. It's a film that can be enjoyed by everyone. So give it a rewatch sometime; you may get a few good laughs and be reminded of what a great movie it was.

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me

She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go (GO!)
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey, now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey, now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now wait 'til you get older
But the meteor man beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

The ice we skate is getting pretty thin
The water's getting warm so you might as well swim
My world's on fire. How about yours?
That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored

Hey, now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play

I need to get myself away from this place
I said yep, what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change

I wasn't hugely fond of the pop music featured, but putting that minor quibble aside, this was still an original and funny animated film, that will please any animation lover. The animation is faultless, never stiff, and lovely backgrounds. The script is laugh-out-loud funny with the fairytale characters, Gingerbread Man especially, and Robin Hood. The characters are definitely memorable, and the terrific voice cast brings the film to life. Mike Myers voices the ogre with feeling, but it is Eddie Murphy who steals the film. Though Cameron Diaz is lovely as Fiona, and John Lithgow is delightfully villainous as Lord Farquad, though his villain isn't the most memorable villain ever in an animation. The film sparkles with heart and humour, it is impossible not to like it. In conclusion, look out for it, you'll be glad you did! 9/10 Bethany Cox. Expand

However, it is not a perfect film because it does suffer from the same clichés as the stories it makes fun of and at times the jokes are dated to the early 2000's, but with a (literally) beautiful moral that is lovingly told in between the silly farce; you have a film that stands a chance at being a pop culture gem for a long time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a kid I hated Shrek. He looked ugly, the animation wasn't exactly what I'd call 'gorgeous', and the little me couldn't tolerate seeing a princess beat up soldiers (I know, it happens in Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third but I couldn't tell the difference). So I finally watched it when I had nothing better to watch, just to see what all happens in it and why exactly does everyone meme it so much. Turns out the little me was dumb. This is a perfect animated movie for anyone who appreciates a good sense of humour.
Shrek is a story about the eponymous ogre who lives in a swamp, always wanting to be left alone. It's a parody of a fairy tale, so just like them the villagers often try to attack him, only to be scared away. Shrek is the opposite of what we see in our fairy tale hero - he's ugly, he's disgusting, he's an outcast, he belongs to the species whom the fairy tale hero kills. But Shrek does not care about what people think about him, or he did until he and Donkey went to slay the dragon and rescue Princess Fiona so that Lord Farquaad would return him his swamp.
The message the movie gives us is that looks can be deceiving. Shrek is afraid no one will like him because he is just an ugly ogre, Donkey believes everyone thinks he's stupid because he's a donkey, Princess Fiona does not want anyone to see him at night because she turns into an ogre herself. Even in the end when the spell breaks and she sees herself in the ogre form, she is confused since she thought she will finally get rid of her curse, but it turned out the opposite is true. The dragon also seemed to be ferocious until Donkey asked her out.
Shrek makes a perfect use of parody imagery throughout the movie. There is the Mama Bear from Goldilocks who has been killed and turned into a rug, there's Ginger Bread Man whose feet have been broken, the Magic Mirror describes Snow White in a double meaning manner, there are magical animals who are traded by the soldiers etc. That combined with the magical world and the moral that it gives, all of these elements combine to make a very fable-like story. It actually feels like this could be a bedtime story that would have been told in the medieval era if they were as progressive as us.
I liked Shrek so much that I already watched it twice: Once while watching it on my own and once to show it to my sister. I really wish they make more of these. Shrek alone is better than all the other animated films made nowadays combined. I could have given it even more stars if it were possible. It makes me nostalgic and it makes me laugh. I couldn't want anything more.

He is a loveable character and is someone alot of people (me included) can relate too. There are other characters here as well and all of them do a excellent job. The fact that this movie is based around classic fairy tale stories gives it such a nostalgic feeling but also puts enough of a fresh spin on it to make it new and unique. It hasn't got the sparkly sparkles that a Disney movie would have but that is what we are here to see! We are here to watch a ogre have a shower in the mud, but also go on a epic adventure and in doing so, find out there is more to life than just scaring people and that everyone, even ogres have layers...Like a onion. Now, after twenty years, it is possible to understand the impact that this film had at that time. In fact, it began a remarkable tetralogy that spanned the first decade of the century and was marked by success with critics and at the box office, consolidating DreamWorks as one of the giants of animated cinema.

The action of the film takes place in a world of fairy tales: Shrek is an ogre who lives alone in a swamp and enjoys his carefree life, where he has fun with mud baths and occasional visits by peasants willing to kill him. But that will change: the arrogant Lord Farquaad decides to send all the magical creatures he considers abnormal into the swamp and to marry a princess in order to finally be a real king. Shrek disputes the feudal lord's gesture, but in response he only receives the promise that he will have the swamp back on condition that he return with the princess, who is trapped at the top of a tower guarded by a dragon, waiting to be saved.

The film is excellent at all levels: wonderfully edited, it is one of those films that we watch without even feeling the time passing. The script blends quite well the naive humor of animation with more mature themes like love triangles and unbridled ambition. It's a film for the whole family. Another advantage of the script is to mix and deconstruct fairy tales in a way never seen before: thus, we have the Gingerbread Man to be a friend of Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf living in harmony and a princess that is far away to be orthodox. Personally, I particularly liked Robin Hood and his cheerful band of robbers, who have never done so much justice to his name, the "Merry Men". The film also has an excellent voice work and a careful choice of voices for the characters. We can hear the remarkable voices of Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow and Mike Myers, but it will surely be Eddie Murphy's impeccable work that will stay in our ears thanks to the witty and cheerful way in which he gave Donkey a voice.

At a technical level, the film is impeccable. DreamWorks invested a lot in this production, and it paid off: even today, twenty years later, the film is visually elegant and very beautiful, with excellent colors and pristine cinematographic work. The action scenes occur in a timely manner and are memorable, as is the ending. The soundtrack is more debatable... the film uses several pieces of pop music, like "I'm a Believer", which match the young spirit of the film but are not as good or interesting when heard by themselves. Likewise, the cover that Rufus Wainwright made of the song "Hallelujah" is not one of the most memorable versions of the melody, originally sung by Leonard Cohen, but it also doesn't matter when heard in the film.

My dad hears me and calls me a **** I knew he was just jealous for my devotion of Shrek. I called him a **** He slaps me and sends me to go to sleep. I'm crying now and my face hurts. I lay in bed and it's really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel something touch me. It's Shrek. I'm so happy. He whispers in my ear, "This is my swamp". He grabs me with his powerful ogre hands, and puts me on my hands and knees. I spread my ass-cheeks for Shrek. He penetrates my butthole. It hurts so much, but I do it for Shrek. I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water. I push against his force. I want to please Shrek. He roars a mighty roar, as he fills my butt with his love. My dad walks in. It was a huge financial success, had high acclaim of fans / critics and started a successful franchise. The humor is the greatest strength of the movie. Nothing is safe or sacred. Be it fairy tales, Disney movies, tropes or stereotypes. They used a lot of care and thoughts to create well written jokes. Many other parodies and spoof movies failed with flat jokes or a quantity over quality approach. Also they chose some of the best voice actors they could use. Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. All together give an amazing performance and I think it is a benchmark for animated movies. Then there is the story with an unusual hero. Shrek is a green ogre and loves the solitude of his swap. He tries to scare away all intruders to be not further disturbed by angry villagers or knights that want to defeat monsters to prove them-self. Meanwhile Lord Farquaad wants to get rid of all fairy-tale creatures / magic beings and exiles them to Shreks swamp. Shrek is now on his journey to get them out of his swap (with their full moral support as they want not to be exiled there). So starts one of the most entertaining journeys in animated movies and a constant attack on your risible muscles. The animations were also pretty impressive back then. They used computer animations to great potential and we were amazed back then how good it looked. Later I read it was the most elaborate animated movie of all times back then. It is always amazing how technology improved. I think I have said all that is needed. Overall this was a remarkable movie and a must see. I think it deserved to be called a movie that earned its place in animated history. Expand

Shrek became a very entertaining meme and the movie is re-watchable and incredible. Shrek has a thing for everyone, to babies to **** adults. The slipped-in adult jokes are incredible, the voice-acting can have minor flaws but is still good. And there are REALLY entertaining characters. If you ask me the Shrek franchise saved Dream-Works from being nothing but a lost joke in the animated-film area. Mike Myers does a fantastic job as Shrek, and the other roles are spot-on and iconic as well. For a 2001 film the animation is like something in the 2010's, it's really beautiful at some spots. I love the opening Swamp scene, the animation is pretty and astounding. As I will always say....Shrek is Love....Shrek is Life. Expand

Along withShrek is a hilarious film that uses parody comedy to appeal to all viewers. The story follows an ogre, Shrek, who is on a quest to get his swamp back from an evil lord and gives a funny take on the friends he makes along the way. Along with tying in clever references to the real world, the entire story is a parody of the hero’s journey, such as having a “mentor” character that is a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy) and through his heroic goal that is really motivated by a selfish desire. I would recommend Shrek to anyone who is looking for a movie filled with great laughs. Expand

I can understand why. Shrek is pretty blatant with it's sexual innuendos and profanity. I wouldn't show it to really little kids either. Probably only the more discerning tweenagers and up.

Shrek skewers fairy tale tropes with it's sarcastic sense of humor without ever straying too far away from them. The idea being to allow the outcasts to finally get their happily ever after ending while simultaneously giving a sullen middle finger to the beautiful people who almost have one handed to them. That's what works for me with Shrek. I'm an ugly guy who has always been judged for both my appearance and the fact that I don't act like everyone else does. This movie showed me a protagonist with similar qualities and allowed him to find friendship, true love, and grow as a person (Er... Ogre).

And isn't that the point of fairy tales? To enchant listeners with stories where anyone downtrodden can have hope? Why is it then that most of the time only the 10/10 hotties have been able to get a happy ending?

Shrek is an escapism fantasy for those who don't typically get to have one outside of what they imagine for themselves.

Donkey played by Eddie Murphy is easily defined as the break out character, with his vivacious and gregarious attitude and his memorable lines. The only Dreamworks' movie that is superior to Beauty and the Beast and Pixar. Expand

A weirdly written -- but greatly amusing fairy tale that shines with humor fit for both kids & adults. The plot is very focused on what it means to be human. Romance, friendships - to be alone, to feel ugly and basic human emotions. It's oneA weirdly written -- but greatly amusing fairy tale that shines with humor fit for both kids & adults. The plot is very focused on what it means to be human. Romance, friendships - to be alone, to feel ugly and basic human emotions. It's one movie of its kind -- so odd but the writing is exemplary! We follow these well visualized characters on their paths through the tale and it is an entertaining & happy ride! Sure some out there might think it's a "too immature film" -- and the animation is in comparison with today's standards very vague. But it's one heck of a film!

Rudely sending up even the most beloved fairy tale traditions while at the same time effectively embodying them, this spirited and often very funny lark accomplishes something that most films in the bygone Hollywood studio era used to do but is remarkably rare in today’s world of niche markets: It offers entertainment equally to viewers from 4 to 104.

Playing equally effectively as a lively romp for kids and an enormously clever comedy for adults, “Shrek” is both simple and sophisticated, hip without being smug or condescending. It’s also a film for animation fans to cherish as well as one that non-enthusiasts can enjoy. On May 12, pic will become just the fifth animated film to be shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, after the late ’40s-early ’50s Disney features “Make Mine Music,” “Dumbo” and “Peter Pan,” and the 1973 French production “La Planete Sauvage” (Fantastic Planet).

Shaking the narrative and stylistic cobwebs from the form, standing every fairy tale convention on its head and landing some excellent shots at Disney for good measure, the picture scores on every front: The writing is smart, the vocal performances are game, and the relatively lifelike look is stunningly realized, making for the best-looking computer animated feature to date.

Screenplay by the team of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (“Aladdin,” “The Mark of Zorro”), Joe Stillman (“Beavis & Butt-head Do America”) and Roger S.H. Schulman (“Balto”) is based on a short 1990 illustrated children’s book by William Steig that chronicled in very simple terms a horrible ogre’s journey to a castle where he wins the hand of an equally ugly princess. There was nothing more to it than that, so it’s a conservative estimate to venture that at least 95% of the inspiration for what’s onscreen came from the scriptwriters, who have let their imaginations go in coming up with characters, subplots, relationships, gags, intrigues and flights of fancy that have no seeds in the book.

Fine jokes and reversals of expectations fill the journey homeward, where the film most clearly reveals its charming small debts to such timeless classics as “Don Quixote,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Beauty and the Beast,” among others. One of the funniest bits has Princess Fiona singing a Disney-style duet with a bluebird, until the chirping creature suddenly explodes when Fiona hits a piercing high note. Only false note in the entire picture comes when Fiona, accosted by a strangely French-accented “Monsieur” Robin Hood, makes some “Matrix”/”Crouching Tiger”-type martial arts moves; bit feels like a sop to tastes of the moment and is the element that will first appear to date the film in years to come.

Visually, “Shrek” is a constant dazzlement, the images all but leaping off the screen. Against the brilliantly designed, exceptionally vivid backgrounds, the characters, human and animal alike, appear realistic and highly expressive without being photographically so; the fine line between naturalism and stylization has been unerringly walked by the large team working under first-time directors Andrew Adamson (a veteran visual effects supervisor) and Vicky Jenson (an art director and storyboard artist).

Endowing Shrek with a mild Irish brogue, Myers brings abundant drollery and vocal appeal to the physically repugnant title character, which implicitly lends weight to the underlying theme of beauty coming from the inside. Much as he did in his previous animated outing as Mushu the Dragon in “Mulan,” Murphy provides Donkey with a jive-talking motor mouth; some of his riffs are genuinely amusing, but the routine threatens to become a bit much at times. Diaz’s readings are energetic and willful, making Fiona a medieval “Charlie’s Angels” candidate, and Lithgow makes the vertically shortchanged Farquaad imposing without undue melodrama.

Outstanding score by Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell (“Antz,” “Chicken Run”) is abetted by a collection of eclectic, shrewdly chosen pop tunes all used to lively effect.

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb In the shape of an "L" on her forehead Well, the years start coming and they don't stop
Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

[Chorus:]
Hey, now, you're an All Star, get your game on, go play
Hey, now, you're a Rock Star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

The ice we skate is getting pretty thin
The water's getting warm so you might as well swim
My world's on fire. How about yours?
That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored.

[Chorus 2x]

Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas
I need to get myself away from this place
I said yep, what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow.

[Chorus]
And all that glitters is gold Only shooting stars break the mold
