My friend, a self confessed "Browncoat" dragged me along to one of the pre-screenings in Nottingham. I had no real hopes and was kinda expecting some cheesey sci-fi geek fest, but was pleasantly surprised. The characters were all unique and engaging with their own personal flaws that made them human, the action and adventure was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed how dark it got. I love nothing more than a film with a lot of heart and a lot of self discovery, mixed in with action, horror, some hilarious one liners and a great cast who clearly loved playing each and every role during their short run during the TV show. The graphics looked really great considering the small budget. I wasn't a fan of the show before, but after seeing Serenity I borrowed the DVD set off my friend to see what I had been missing, and boy, what a tremendous show it was. I highly recommend Serenity - a great time is guarenteed. Expand

I will be honest- while Serenity may not be the most original or inventive sci-fi film of the year, it promises to erase all memory of George Lucas' billion-dollar monstrosity from you mind faster than you can say "gorram". Fantastic I will be honest- while Serenity may not be the most original or inventive sci-fi film of the year, it promises to erase all memory of George Lucas' billion-dollar monstrosity from you mind faster than you can say "gorram". Fantastic characters, a great script, and a ceaselessly intense third act make you think that, with Josh weadon finally working on features, there may yet be hope for intelligent, family-friendly sci-fi. I was pleasantly supprised at just how good a movie this was. Everybody seems to be comparing it to Star Wars (particularly The Empire Strikes Back), but the beauty of the film is that it owes just as much to The Searchers and Indiana Jones. I was pleasantly supprised at just how good a movie this was. Everybody seems to be comparing it to Star Wars (particularly The Empire Strikes Back), but the beauty of the film is that it owes just as much to The Searchers and Indiana Jones. Of course, having said that, I hope Lucas sees this film and hangs his head in shame. Dude- this is how you write dialog! I can only hope that this film gets the audience it deserves. The main strength lies in the characters, its a rare movie case where they aren't just characters, they transform into real people that you can actually care about, at times painfully so. Comedy plays a massive part in the film but its still the dark side that shines through giving an extremely powerful movie experience. Even the action sequences, despite the low budget, are excellent and put many huge-money blockbusters to shame. Go see it as soon as possible, as not to miss out on one of the most amazing movies to date. Expand

I find the criticisms of this film on this website to be kind of hilarious. Two commenters note similarities to an old BBC show called Blake's 7 and call that program superior to Firefly/Serenity (I have to wonder if they ever saw I find the criticisms of this film on this website to be kind of hilarious. Two commenters note similarities to an old BBC show called Blake's 7 and call that program superior to Firefly/Serenity (I have to wonder if they ever saw Blake's 7, which is maybe a hair better than the '60s version of Lost in Space). Others criticize the fanboys and fangirls who (understandably) talk about the series on which Serenity is based. So here's the real deal: Serenity works as two types of film, a space opera and a three-part series finale. As the former, Serenity is up there with Wrath of Khan and Empire as one of those alternately hilarious and moving sh*t-blows-up-in-space flicks; if you liked the first two Star Wars films, you'll like Serenity. So far as the continuation of Firefly is concerned... well, that's trickier, because this is everything Firefly wasn't. Firefly was a natural serial that was pushed to be a procedural, and, though at times a great show, it never matured to the brilliance to which it aspired. In Serenity, however, we see the world Firefly tried to create fleshed out. All the humor and characterization of the series is there, but the plot has been fleshed out more, doing for Firefly what the afore-mentioned Khan did for the original Star Trek: taking a good idea and making it awesome. Oh, and one last thing: anyone who dislikes the acting is a fool. Nathan Fillion is outstanding as the Han Solo-esque Mal Reynolds, and his performance makes me wonder what Star Wars might've been if centering not around Luke Crywalker (ahem) but the actually interesting character from that great-but-overrated trilogy. (Would "Beigecoat" be more like it?) Nevertheless, everything that worked so well on the small screen is pleasurably extended, magnified and intensified in Whedon's very satisfying big-screen conclusion. (And by the way, let's take just a moment to whomp on the Fox Corporation's stupidly short-sighted hindquarters for treating the original series in such a cavalier fashion: running the episodes out of sequnce, pre-empting them half the time and in general spitting on the science fiction buffs and Whedon devotees that had been watching from day one. Why would a business outfit that had previously shown such insight in carving out programming for conservative news junkies, prime-time animation fans and those who want edgy HBO-style programming without having to pay extra for it not only drop the ball on this one, but do it with such arrogance? Did they learn nothing from slow starters such as Cheers and Seinfeld, neither of which even had a built-in guaranteed audience to begin with?) Anyway, it's highly enjoyable to watch Whedon--an unapologetic fanboy--both acknowledge and surpass his predecessors: anyone who remembers the tortuous plot mechanics Gene Rodenberry expended in order to get Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura to exchange TV's first interracial kiss should love how Firefly/Serenity jumps right in with two of the crew members being a mixed couple with a very healthy, happy sex life! Whedon's obviously a huge Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark fan (Mal, an intergalactic rebel turned brigand, is a direct Han Solo/Indiana Jones descendant, who's played by Nathan Fillion with a joy that Harrison Ford hasn't been bringing to his film roles lately) but also surprises and delights audiences by introducing scores of less readily predictable pop culture influences into the mix; the plotline involving the galactic government's attempt to cover up crucial information that could literally have a life-or-death effect on the universe recalls many classic 'paranoid thrillers' from the early-to-mid 1970s such as Chinatown, The Conversation, All the President's Men, The Parallax View, Three Days of the Condor and even Jaws. But speaking personally as a huge fan of Whedon's TV gems Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, I think that the greatest of Whedon'sd many considerable strengths is his eye for characterization and relationships; not only do all three shows resemble the supernatural/SF/action equivalents of such great MTM-produced workplace-as-family comedies as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show and WKRP in Cincinnati, but one of the keys to Whedon's ongoing love affair with his passionately devoted fans is his tremendous talent for making you, the viewer, feel like you're part of the Scooby Gang, Angel Enterprises or the Serenity crew. Not that many or all of the characters aren't hugely flawed, or that Whedon shields, talks down to, or babies his audience in any way: if you, like scores of fans, hated the eventual fates of Tara or Xander on Buffy or Cordelia or Fred on Angel, you'll have much to chew on or stew over after watching Serenity...but that's part of what hordes of Whedonphiles should be aware of when they sign on. As a first-time film director, Whedon gets the job done with both efficiency and heart and turns some of the negative comments that have been made about his TV background to major advantage: his action scenes and special effects are wonderfully intimate and immediate with special effects judiciously used...and you never feel as though you're drowning in a sea of CGI unreality. Firefly veterans may have a better time with this than the completely uninitiated because they have the background knowledge, but I've no doubt that moviegoers of both groups will be eager to describe Serenity with its futuristic, highly multicultural universe's ultimate expression of praise: it's shiny! I've tried to be honest and fair about this. If you are not a fan of the TV show then this film will not deliver with quite the strength and power that it would if you have watched the TV show. It remains a much better than average I've tried to be honest and fair about this. If you are not a fan of the TV show then this film will not deliver with quite the strength and power that it would if you have watched the TV show. It remains a much better than average sci-fi adventure, fun and moving, with a good swashbuckling thing going on too. I honestly think that most people would adore it, and I think it could ignite the kind of enthusiasm that the original Star Wars did if the right audience got hold of it. But I can't say that it would definitely happen. So for people who have not seen the show, I'm saying eight out of ten. If you have seen the show, and enjoyed it at all, then this will blow your head clean off. Ten out of ten - there are flaws here, but they are so over-matched by some heart-in-mouth moments and speeches, jokes and traumas that you cannot, and will not be disappointed. In a nutshell: everyone should be satisfied by this film, and some will quite quickly fall in love. I don't go and see a lot of films twice, but this will be one of them. Expand

Go out and see the best sci-fi film of the year without delay. Most sci-fi and action movies, I watch them and think if only they'd spent a fraction of the special effects budget on the script, the film would have been a lot more entertaining. Serenity is quite the opposite, money hasn't been wasted on big stupid effects (although the film is visually pleasing anyway) and the script is tight, full of Joss Whedon's patented one-liners, and occasionally graced with something verging on philosophy and situational humour. Plus, the characters are genuinely three dimensional, and how often do you really get that? This is Joss Whedon's debut as feature film director - and it's only going to get better. Can't wait for the rest of the trilogy. Expand

This is the single greatest piece of genre-mixing to EVER see the big screen... Whedon's ability to condense a complex and well-articulated semi-verse into an enjoyable, yet cerebral passion play is astounding... And I think there's a bit of anti-TV bias here, so let me explain... I was never a fan of Buffy as a T. V. show, much less the movie, but I relented to my better half's judgement, and caught a few episodes of BTVS. My initial reaction was one of amazement, primarily how dialogue, as the vehicle upon which EVERY television show worth its salt is carried, elevated the series beyond its counterparts. Dialogue as a vehicle of explication... What a NOVEL CONCEPT!!! (Yeah, George L., that's how we fell in love with that pirate-smuggler, who went on to movie greatness, remember???!!!) Alas, dialogue explication is the luxury of the T. V. series, and when that series gets dumped, focus changes, especially when you are simultaneously given a two-plus hour big screen opportunity to wrap up every loose end, and at the same time make every character matter... ...And Whedon delivers, lashing the bundled threads together like a captain faced with the storm of expectations, while letting the creative vision fly in the wind. Serenity is, above and beyond all else, what it is; dusty jargon, hardscrabble lifestyles, and above all else, a story that LIVES in it's own unique world. Sometimes, the farce that we live in needs a voice in another time, and if properly voiced, that farce carries the weight of truth farther than any of our expectations... Serenity isn't our collective future; rather, it's a potential future in which we can get comfy and explore what really matters... Love, greed, morals, and ultimately, personal salvation are still possible, regardless of time or place... Expand

This movie really had everything, and it was done in a very unique and epic manner. The character depth was there as usual, even if at times the actors seemed a bit stale. One complaint that I have is that the assassin, the black guy, his character wasn't anything near as deep as it was in the TV show. I wanted some of those odd perspectives, and some more information on where he came from, rather than reintroducing him. I noticed that it seemed to do a better job of introducing people to the 'franchise' than most of these kinds of movies do. They didn't spend too much time explaining the events of the show, but I'm confident anyone could easily follow. I was thinking that it's kind of like what a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic mobie would be.. Hmm. This movie would hold its own with any Star Wars, Star Trek, or any of the other major Sci-Fi movies. Expand

2 best genres, mixed. Wonderful, original aesthetics and great political critique of Plato's view on morality and government. The cast is excellent, as the movie earns its stripes as both a stand-alone and a capstone to Firefly.

I mean it's not as if I didn't enjoy the film for what it was, practically speaking. And it's also doubly not as if theatrically released movies should require an entire user-manual of information in order for audiences to fully enjoy them. So, in that regard, as far as sci-fi/western movies based on canceled sci-fi/western television series that I've never seen go, I most certainly think this one is the best. All kidding aside though, when one looks past the glaring CGI missteps and the handful of "if you watched the TV show, you would totally understand what they're talking about" moments littered throughout, it's still a worthwhile/entertaining film with an incredible amount of wit and creativity abound. Wow. I've heard mixed things about it, but really, I just can't recommend this enough, if you've watched the series.
I think what Firefly always had going for it was the fact that it really was unique. Not just the western sci-fi genre or the outcry over the only season, but the writing was just so great. Breaking of cliches was a treat to behold, and the wit; ahh, the wit. Serenity really held true to this for me. It was still original and it wrapped up loose ends so expertly. The villain wasn't generic(at least he was pretty unusual as villains go) and despite having seen similar things to him, he was still a curiosity. All the characters I loved came back, but it was clear time had passed which in Whedon's expert plan had implied events which closed up so much more than I expected.

The film itself; I don't know what to say. It just felt like an extended episode. And god, I loved it. This is more of a love letter than a review, sorry. But if you're like me and didn't want to say goodbye, it's not really goodbye. I promise.

I gasped, got choked up, and even uttered "holy sh*t" at a certain point, but at the same time it captures the essence of the original TV series while having plenty of laughs & memorable moments. I'm so glad I was able to this in the theater, but I don't know why I was the only one who clapped when the movie ended. It was the perfect ending for the Firefly series. Expand

There is no way to summarize how good this is. The characters were all themselves, the plot was full and damned if the new settings (I won't spoil in this review) didn't help out as much.

I feel like i cant review this movie honestly, and without prejudice since i'm a huge fan of the original 'Firefly' show, but man does this movie deliver on all levels.
To enjoy this movie fully you would have to have seen the series first, It's sheds (more) light on things we did and didn't already know which makes this movie so much more fun to watch. The fun characters are back, Whedon's always great snappy dialogue is also top-notch yet again, the better big budget special effects really enhance the movie as well, which was something the show didnt have the money for. It answers many unanswered questions, and informs us on things you didnt really wanted to know, but are still cool to know, but then again, the movie makes us ask questions that leave unanswered, and it doesn't answer ALL question we had about the show, which is the only reason why i dont give it a full score.

All in all 'Serenity' is immensely satisfying, and great on all levels, and it surely doesn't disappoints. When watching you'll just feel great to see this fun group of people back on screen for 1 last adventure.
