I only wish I had seen this movie for the first time when it came out. Having grown up in the 90's and early 00's, I realize that I may have absorbed a lot of the twists in turns in this via osmosis, so not a lot of it was as impactful as I would have hoped. Not the movie's fault. Expand

A rare instance where the movie really is as genius as everyone says it is, though I’ve always thought Scream 2 further perfected the formula.

A classic Horror Movie that feels more fun then actually scary at times, but that makes up a good amount of the charm of the movie, making the Ghostface mask the most iconic face of horror, if not the most iconic.

Wanting to revive the horror genre, which was almost never heard of, Wes Craven decided to create his own masked monster. As a result, the monster ("Ghostface") turned out to be very recognizable and maniacally frightening, but at the same time a little funny. In the film itself, apart from the final action, there is nothing memorable. The main characters are well thought out and the actors play them well, and the gore scenes in some places look even better than the Halloween franchise. Otherwise, "Scream" is quite a typical slasher film about teenagers with a very recognizable antagonist due to the appearance. Expand

Other movies have changed the way that we are scared through film and this changed it for the teen market. The gore was there but not extreme; the stars were kids and the music for the new generation. This film also brought a self-referential nineties post-modern irony to the ball game. As a film it is very good with strong acting and some good jumps. It does lack depth although the light comedy makes up for that. This is an entertaining, if lighter than most, slick teen horror. Amazing surprise. It took me some time to watch this unavoidable and iconic horror feature.

Where should I start? Terrific acting, characters are all lovable even the dumbest ones. Visceral performances. The late 90's feelings are palpable and bring an inescapable gorgeous atmosphere to the movie. The acting is very impressive: there is never too much of it despite the fact that some scenes are quite dumb. The police investigation simply is thrilling. If the story seems a bit linear, there is always something to expect from the evolution of the characters, who contribute perfectly to make "Scream" a film based on a wonderful crescendo ending on a glorious and twisted final in the continuity of the rest of the film. Lighting is as great as the environment. The soundtrack is amazing (and way more convenient to me than in the Peaky Blinders).

What struck me most was that the film is surprisingly self-aware, even ironic and parodic of other horror films. It just can stop to launch precise ans subtile jokes to the other features in the market. Obviously in 1996 we couldn't avoid the poor special effects, the awful puppets, the laughable quality and quantity of blood, etc. But in a way it is part of the beauty of 'Scream'.

Right after getting his throat slit by Ghostface in front of Sidney while she's in the news van, his final moment of life is pointing to the exist almost hidden away in the van for Sidney to escape. I honestly believe that she would've been dead if he didn’t direct her to it, making her reaction much faster.

It's little character moments like this that makes 'Scream' a great horror movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My Favorite Horror Film

Scream is without a doubt my favorite horror film of all time. It is very creative, spooky, well-made, and it has never gets old as I have seen it countless times.

Scream is about a killer that wears a ghost mask and threatens people over the phone and later kills its victims. A young girl named Casey (Drew Barrymore) and her boyfriend Steve get killed from this killer and triggers a huge investigation in Woodsboro, California. A girl, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), becomes the next victim and she must do everything to find out who is the killer and fight him off.

Scream is very top notch and flawless. The plot is very creative with some cool twists to make it more interesting. The acting is great and I love the cast. Neve Campbell did a wonderful job playing the lead, Sidney, David Arquette was great as playing the cop, Deputy Dewey Riley, Courtney Cox was amazing as the news reporter, Gale Weathers, and the rest of the cast, such as Matthew Lillard, Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy and Drew Barrymore was awesome.

Out of all four Scream films, this one definitely has the best killer reveal. You find out that there were two killers, and they were Stu (Matthew Lillard) and Billy (Skeet Ulrich). They were the killers of Sidney's mother as well, and it was because Billy's mom left his Dad because his Dad was with Sidney's mom. I felt that was a very cool twist and they explained how they planned everything out.

In conclusion, Scream is a successful and masterful horror movie that lives up to this very day and will always be my favorite horror film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Two of the most complex visual effects in the film were the corpses of Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) and Steve Orth (Kevin Patrick Walls). Their deaths involved the character being gutted from ribcage to pelvis, essentially hollowing out the torso of internal organs, with the guts "rolling" from the wound. To allow Walls to continue to move and feign death while displaying the wound, KNB designed a chair with no back. The actor would kneel behind it while his upper body, head, and arms were positioned within the chair's seating area. An anatomical model representing the character's torso and legs was positioned in the chair and disguised so that the actor's upper body and the model appeared to be one piece. The fake abdomen was filled with rubber, latex, and gelatin pieces smeared in fake blood, the "internal organs", which could then fall free. The other effect involved Casey being gutted and hung by the neck from a tree. The team utilized a similar approach, but replicated Barrymore's entire body, as it would be impossible to conceal her real body and display the visual effect of her character having been gutted. The final design was approved by Fun World Vice President Allan Geller. Wes Craven claimed to have originally found the mask, but later clarified that he had misremembered the event, and that it was producer Marianne Maddalena who discovered it. She found it while inside a house during location scouting for the film and brought it to the attention of Wes Craven, who set about trying to obtain the rights to use it. Fun World licensing director R.J. Torbert joined Fun World in 1996 and was given the task of naming the mask prior to its film debut, deciding on "GhostFace" with the blessing of Fun World owners Stanley and Allan Geller. Torbert felt it looked like a "ghost in pain", believing it to be a unique design. The Ghostface design and title are owned by Fun World. Expand

The studio did this because during the holiday season, family friendly movies are usually released, and the studio wanted to give the horror audience something to see during a time when no horror movies would be out. It opened at number four with $6.4 million, which led the studio to believe the film had flopped. However, the film's good word of mouth is what led to its success at the box office. With every week it went up, or stayed at the same place in the box office. By the end of its run, it ended up making over $100 million at the U.S. box office. Expand

Pure brilliance! That's what this movie is. Not only it's a modern day classic, it's almost a perfect film. It serves as a slasher flick, a perfect blend of slasher and whodunit, an excellent thriller and an extremely exciting rollercoasterPure brilliance! That's what this movie is. Not only it's a modern day classic, it's almost a perfect film. It serves as a slasher flick, a perfect blend of slasher and whodunit, an excellent thriller and an extremely exciting rollercoaster ride. In my opinion, Scream and Scream 2 are better than his most popular movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street. No, I don't hate original Freddy movie, I consider it to be one of the bests of the genre. But I find Scream way beyond that. It might possibly be because I am more into thrillers, murder mysteries and whodunits, but that doesn't change the fact that I find Scream to be Wes Craven's greatest work.

There are a lot of goods I have say about this movie, and I won't be spoiling anything. All these stuffs aren't probably things that have not been already said prior to my review. But these are the reasons why I love it so much. First, it's extremely well-paced. It has a definitive tone it goes for, any doesn't miss a bit at all. It is almost two hours long, it begins to end at around 1:30:00 mark. The last 30 minutes doesn't even feel like 30 minutes. It's almost like 5 or 6 minutes, and I am not even exaggerating. There's not a single moment in the movie which doesn't give an uneasy feeling. That uneasy feeling lasts throughout the movie, until things start getting revealed. And after that, what follows is an intense, action packed finale that the movie absolutely deserves. And I almost forgot. The opening of this movie is perhaps the best opening of all the slasher films since the late 70s. .
.
Even if it wasn't a meta film, except for a few interesting pop culture references, it would've worked equally well. That's because it has a story of it's own. You are constantly gripped by the whodunit aspect of the movie. It completely understands that it's actually the intensity, the tension and the characterizations you give in the film that makes it work, not some pointless gory scenes. The
gore and kills are mere aftermath and payoff of what we had just witnessed in the story. Gore doesn't equal a great horror, and in particular, a great slasher. Seems like this film understood it really well. And there's something that this movie does, which none of the slashers before it and (except for a little extent in Scream 2) none of its sequels do. That is getting the uncertainty factor absolutely right. Definitely, I would say none of the endings of the Scream movies (1 to 4, at the time of this review) were quite predictable to me. But, even in the beloved classics, except for a possible few dodges, we get to know who the main lead is and who's going to be the victim. It's not that with Scream. At many moments, even though we recognize the main lead (who's awesome, btw) we feel like she might not make it. And, definitely a lot of people are sliced. But, we do not, or should I say, cannot expect a character to die or not to die because it plays the trope of "everyone is a suspect" extremely well. .
.
This movie has the best batch of characters in any slasher movie. All the characters are so memorable and the characterizations are brilliant. You cannot exchange one character with the other. There are no stock characters for extra kills or something like that. Every kill happens for a purpose, may it have a motive or may it be an act of a pure psychopath. And in that line, I would also like to mention that Neve Campbell is my most favorite actress (and Sidney Prescott is my favorite slasher lead character) when it comes to the ones who've been the lead of a slasher movie. Unlike a lot of such leads, she doesn't feel like a "typically written to survive" lead. She has more depth to her character than many of the leads from many different franchises combined! She does a lot of stuff that kinda reminds me of John McClane. She definitely does whole lot less of over the top things that McClane does, but she does have some great one liners, fantastic fight/action scenes and the vulnerability that makes us feel that she's one of us, and not a movie character. That being said, the performances are extremely great. Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, David Arquette as Dewey, Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) as Stu, and Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis and all the others have given a fantastic performance. .
.
It's a movie which doesn't use its meta nature as an excuse for being lame, in fact, it's everything but lame. Being a meta movie, it serves as a celebration of almost two decades of slasher films by taking jabs on cliches while using that cliche in a much more grounded way. It gives a well written story and a whole bunch of well written characters and an intensely exciting storytelling. That's what makes it so great. If you haven't checked it out, don't waste any time. Please, see this movie. It's a highly underappreciated (though insanely popular) and a criminally underrated gem of a movie. .
.

Innovative, scary, funny, clever, smart, etc. Its definitely a movie that's one of a kind and a magic that will never be replicated. Taking all of our beloved slasher cliches and flipping them on their head redefined the horror genre in 1996 and no one saw it coming. Although I desperately was waiting for the films release not too many people were. It arrived that December with very little buzz and only a selection of mixed reviews. Made for $15 million and opening with only a little over $6 million it looked like a flop. But as the weeks went on and word of mouth spread and critics started seeing it. The reviews shot up and so did the box office. Ultimately making over $173 million worldwide. I'm happy to say that I got to experience the phenomenon first hand working at a movie theater. To this day the movie is still fantastic. It's truly a perfect storm from the fluid, accomplished direction from Wes Craven to the brilliant screenplay by My personal idol Kevin Williamson and a perfectly cast of actors giving inspired performances. Neve Campbell was without a doubt one of the strongest scream queens to grace our genre and of course we can't forget the charasmatic Courtney Cox or lovably dopey David Arquette that followed her through the excellent franchise. And of course memorable work by Rose McGowan, Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy, Skeet Ulrich and more. Of course no one can forget the amazing cameo by Drew Barrymore. Intelligent unique and genre defining the film stands as a masterwork of modern cinema.

Budget: $15m
Domestic Box Office: $103m
Worldwide Box Office: $173m

Bits of humour are added and Scream was directed by Wes Craven in 1996 and it stars Drew Barrymore, Rose McGowan, Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Henry Winkler who's Fonzy in Happy Days which was amusing to see him in this film. This film is more or less the same or similar concept to the Halloween films or Friday the 13th films, someone going round in a mask killing people but it's always with a knife and a ghostface mask. The horror parts don't work and Scream isn't scary or terrifying one bit and some of the humour is good but others fall flat as a pancake. Rose McGowan's character is likeable and Drew's but some of if not all the male characters are loud, annoying, dull or unlikeable and this feels more most of the time like a television comedy with blood more than a horror. Some of the male acting is overacted into moronic stupidity and way over the top and the cops are dumb with little if any logical intelligence so this films just laughable and embarrassing. Truly awful and the films boring too which is the biggest sin of any director or film maker. Expand

While yes, Scream IS about the final girl being chasedHoly crap, what a movie! Wes Craven just took the limits and broke it in half with no remorse! Scream is the normal run-of-the-mill slasher at first glance, but is it really? Not really. While yes, Scream IS about the final girl being chased by the creepy masked guy trope we’ve all seen throughout the years, but scream takes on a more meta approach and adds more humor along the way. This movie predicts itself in a lot of places, but stills add a bunch of new and creative ideas, such as the kills.

The kills and the scares are one reason to watch this movie, and it's a good reason too. The kills are AMAZING in this movie. Their creative, gory, gut-wrenching, but most importantly, scary. The movie captivates you with the mystery of who the killer is and what they plan to do next to our protagonists, which are also a good reason to watch this movie. The characters are not bad at all, they’re fun to watch them do their thing and see how they react to their upcoming demise, which sounds dark but hey, it's just a movie.

It Overall Scream was an instant classic and scared many when it first came out and still scares people today. I even found myself on the edge of my seat while watching. While it's good scares, great actors, good scares, great kills, amazing killer persona (Ghostface), and what matters most, a damn good twist. This movie will stun you and keep you on your toes every step of the way and will continue to scare many people for years to come, this is a must-watch if you're looking to be scared during any time of day

A good parody of horror films?

This "horror" movie is set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, and tells how the young Sidney Prescott, a year after the brutal murder of his mother, is pursued by a mysterious psychopathic killer, masked with black clothes and a mask that looks like something out of a Munch painting. Directed by Wes Craven (who became famous with the franchise "Nightmare on Elm Street"), has a script by Kevin Williamson and includes Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette in the lead roles, playing respectively the young Casey, the protagonist Sidney, an ambitious reporter called Gale Weathers and the sheriff's deputy, Dewey.

As audience, we are in doubt about what really is this film: if it is a mere horror movie then we are facing one of the worst: although some situational scares, the film does not scare anyone, on the contrary: the killer is bumbling, fumbling and spends at least half of the film playing with the phone and stumble around the stage. In turn, the victims are mostly young immature teenagers, so pathetic and mentally retarded that we come to the point of delighting us with their deaths. There is no terror, just false terror, and there is no suspense, only false suspense.

If this movie isn't a horror movie but a teen film (perhaps one of the most indigestible film genres that exists), then they are on their favorite ground and I just wish, when they saw the sad end of the teenagers here, they decided to spend more lifetime devoting themselves to reading and developing their maturity.

Finally, if this isn't a teen or horror movie, it can only be a comedy that seeks to parody both genders. And, if this is true, then this is a great film, which made us laugh from start to finish and ridicules, in a funny way, both film genres. The dialogs of the adolescents, seeking to theorize the "formulas" of horror films and how to survive in a horror movie, are particularly funny. It's quite possible that it was the Wes Craven's intention with this film, instead of making a conventional horror film. May have been ...?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Scream's code is that the creation of peace is created by the creation of difference. Created peace isn't peace, and the balance is the creation of difference twice. Original peace isn't possible, as the universe isn't the original state of reality; however, the replication of the original state of reality is possible, and the 1996 horror film seems to be an example which applies.

The creation of the creation of difference is the creation of different difference. Different difference isn't difference, but is a type of presence that needs to be created. This type of presence will then mean the ability of replicated peace.

Type of presence isn't type or presence; it is the absence of type and presence. Type is presence, which means that the replicated peace needs the absence of a replicated presence, or the absence of a replicated type. What is a replicated type? Type means trees and houses, or knives and buildings. So perhaps Scream is the need of a replicated tree or barn to become absent. Not the original tree, but the replication of the tree needs to become absent, and then the ability of the tree will become present.

The ability being present is the absence of the reason of the ability. No reason means the ability, and so Scream's philosophy appears to be that value is design having no reason.

But is that true, or logical? Should it be right that the value of a design is predicated on the design having no reason to exist? If a design is wallpaper, or a Ghostface costume, the wallpaper or costume having no reason means no presence of the wallpaper or costume, therefore neither the wallpaper or costume are able to have any value in the first place.

The value of the wallpaper is its absence because of no reason. In the movie Scream, the wallpaper not existing because it has no reason is its value. Yet the source of the understanding was presence, so the philosophy of Scream is that the presence of value is a fallacy. Value means bias, meaning that the wallpaper not existing because it has no reason to exist is its bias. Therefore the absence of bias is presence that isn't predicated on reason, and the story of Sidney Prescott is about trying to determine the identity of the absence of bias

Craven loved him some upset suburban high school girls and this on full display in Scream. A terrific satire and yet still great horror in its own right, Scream makes you laugh and feel scared, sometimes simultaneously. However, who better to mock the horror genre than Craven? The Master of Horror knows the genre better than anyone, thus he knows the rules and knows how to poke fun at them, while using them at their most effective. In all honesty, Scream's greatest accomplishment is justifying the cliches. By having regular people mock the cliches and then fall victim to the same cliches, Craven essentially justifies them and showcases how we would all act the same way as the horror movie characters if it happened to us.

Putting modern day horror satire The Cabin in the Woods to shame, Scream manages to elicit pure terror from beginning to end, especially in the opening sequence. The least satirical scene, it shows off Craven's ability as a horror master. He creates tension, atmosphere, and fear with relative ease, which sets the tone for the rest of the film. The opening is so horrifying, it really makes the rest of the film seem that much scarier. Even better, the mystery surrounding this scene lasts until the end of the film as you are left to constantly wonder who the killer is, with conflicting clues and knowledge of cliches playing through your mind.

The story of Scream is a simple one and one that would be suitable in a typical horror film, but is incredibly effective. As is always the case, suburban horror movies are classic, due to their relatability and the way in which suburban life can be a horror for many (even if it is devoid of monsters). The story is bolstered by the constant references to other horror films that point out the cliches at every turn and almost prep you for them to come up. In many regards, Scream tips its hand so many times, yet you ignore it because you imagine it is simply mocking cliches. Instead, Scream is practically screaming at you to realize that this is a cliche horror film, just a self-aware one. Thus, the films sense of irony is incredibly rich and used very effectively.

That strength does become the main weakness at times, however. The way in which Scream pulls its punches by pointing out scary cliches just before they happen kind of ruins the atmosphere, especially towards the end. Constantly, the film points out scary moments before they happen, which lessens their impact and leaves you laughing more than anything. Given that the film sets out to be both scary and funny, this pulling of punches towards the end leaves you anything but scared. Entertained, sure, but it is clear that Craven lost sense of the balance beam he expertly toed between the two genres in the first and second acts. By the third, he goes "balls to walls" with comedy with little regard for the horror element.

Overall, Scream is a classic for good reason. Funny and entirely scary, the film features good performances across the board and will make you want to watch the referenced horror films all over again (or in my case, for the first time...). I guess have some homework to do.

This movie is awesome. The ending was shocking, the story is great, and the characters are very interesting. The fact that they made the boyfriend too obvious, and then made him be the killer was brilliantly done. 10/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The artistic medium of film is very subjective. Every audience member has a different set of criteria they use to measure their viewing experience. Not everyone shares the same set of criteria. If we did, what a bland and uninspired world this would be.

What I Personally Liked About "Scream":
Wes Craven has always been one of the better directors of modern horror films. He keeps the direction tight, he gets the shots he wants, and he knows how to pace the production to garner the maximum impact of his thrills and chills. While he might not have been at the top of his form here, he was still better than most terror-spinners from the mid-nineties. It doesn't hurt that he has a halfway decent script from Kevin Williamson to work from either. Playing off the unwritten rules of horror movies was an inventive trick that had been touched upon previously but had never been fully explored. This was a fairly witty, counter cultural screenplay that did its best to revitalize a stale genre. In addition, its twist ending was quite wild for 1996. Neve Campbell deserved the spotlight shone on her as well. You can tell she's dedicated to her craft and really believed in the material that was presented to her. I was very glad to see her in this role, particularly after not being given nearly enough to do in "The Craft" which was released earlier in the same year. I just wish she had better cast member surrounding her. The only notable exception to that statement is Jamie Kennedy. While his solo career featured a couple of hilariously bad pictures ("Malibu's Most Wanted" and "Son of the Mask" spring to mind immediately), his over-the-top style works well within the context of "Scream."

What I Personally Disliked About "Scream":
Pretty much every other cast member that is not Neve Campbell or Jamie Kennedy. Seriously. Some of them have had wonderful roles outside of this movie, but here it is a different story. David Arquette really stands out as the worst of the worst for me. He's far too cartoonish for this film. His character is far too distracting to be effective. It's like being repeatedly slammed against a brick wall every time he shows up. In a film which contains the queen b--ch lite antics of Courteney Cox, the unabashed Johnny Depp-edness of Skeet Ulrich, and the ham-and-cheese Henry Winkler provides, that's saying a lot. There's also an over reliance on teen drama to further the plot. While it nicely skewers the horror genre, it does accidentally fall prey to the soapish teen flicks of the decade with too many boyfriend/girlfriend problems and too many high school gossiping circles (the bathroom scene where Sidney hides while listening to her classmates ponder her role in the killings is cringe worthy to say the least).

My Overall Impression of "Scream":
Growing up, I held a very deep interest in horror movies. Sadly, the genre started to take a downward swing in the early nineties. Dimension bought the rights to both the "Halloween" and the "Hellraiser" series, New Line bought Jason Voorhees, and the terror we knew from the eighties started to collapse under its own weight. "Scream" was the new blood needed to pump through the veins of the terror industry and breathe life back into scary movies. It will never live up to the horror classics that came before, but it was good enough to bridge the gap until something better came along.

The film succeeds because the characters are fleshed out and feel like real people due to the script and superb acting (everyone is amazing, but Matthew Lilliard's performance is pure gold), the goofy and witty humour ("LIVER alone!"), the nice locales used to bring Woodsboro to life, and Wes Craven's flawless direction. With lots of bloody action and numerous scares, Scream is a must-see for fans of the horror genre. Expand

Go Ahead and 'Scream'

The best fright fest of the ’90s, Wes Craven’s "Scream" playfully tweaks many of the horror/ slasher conventions in place since the arrival of "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" in the mid-’80s, but it does so with a fiendishly clever, complicated plot that makes it an instant classic, and not simply of the genre. Though it begins and ends with requisite bloody roughness, the film deftly mixes irony, self-reference and wry social commentary with chills and blood spills. And even to a veteran genre fan like myself, the ending was a genuine surprise.

Credit veteran director Craven and a newcomer, scriptwriter Kevin Williamson: Like the teen characters in "Scream," they are intimately familiar with genre conventions but are not slaves to them.

You get a sense of the wild ride ahead from the opening sequence in which a teenager (Drew Barrymore in the Jamie Lee Curtis "Halloween" mold) is tested over the phone -- at first chummily, then suddenly meanly -- by a phantom psycho caller who quizzes her about slasher movies. "If you answer correctly, you live," he warns. She doesn’t and Craven unleashes a living, knife-wielding nightmare who wears black robes and sports an Edvard Munch-"Scream"-like death mask that’s truly unsettling.

This little California town seems to be inhabited mostly by teenagers, including Sidney (Neve Campbell from "Party of Five"). Seems Sidney’s mom had been slashed to death a year ago, and her testimony had sent the killer to death row. Now Sidney’s on the killer’s kill waiting list. Soon after she survives an attack, who should come crawling in her bedroom window but boyfriend Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). Arrested by the police, Billy is simply the first of many suspects, including tabloid TV journalist Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), Deputy Dewey Reilly (David Arquette), belligerent teen rebel Stuart (Matthew Lillard) and video shop employee Randy (Jamie Kennedy). As always, the line between suspect and victim is membrane thin.

The irony of "Scream" is that all its characters seem conversant with slasher film conventions. "To successfully survive a horror movie, you have to abide by the rules," Randy reminds a group of teens gathered at an isolated farm house for a celluloid slasher fest. "You can never have sex: The minute you do, you’re as good as gone. Sex equals death. Never drink or do drugs: It’s an extension of the first. And never, ever say ‘I’ll be right back . . ..’ "

Para mí, una película fundamental del género del terror, marcó un antes y un después, marcó definitivamente la pauta de la mayoría de las películas del subgénero slasher.
