That was my one surprise/complaint: this was more a drama verging in tragedy. Still, director Dexter Fletcher's vision to present John's songbook as part of the narrative is masterfully presented, even sometimes moving. There's plenty of information to qualify as a biopic, but the creative, artistic approach elevates the film to a magical movie musical.… Expand

In the new film “Rocketman” audiences get a look behind the man thanks to the amazing and Oscar worthy portrayal by Taron Egerton.
The film opens with a flamboyantly dressed John entering rehab in one of his stage costumes. As he opens up with his group, he shares the story of his childhood as a shy child who is desperate to have his father show him any signs of approval or affection.
When it is discovered that he has talent with the piano; his grandmother encourages him and even takes him to apply for a position at the Royal Academy of Music.

His mother (Bryce Dallas Howard) is moderately supportive but is more focused on her social life brought on by her failing marriage.

As the film unfolds; we see Elton working in a backup band and in time answering an ad that puts him with an agent. Paired with the man who would eventually change his life; Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell), Elton and Bernie combine to write a series of songs which in turn leads him to a series of gigs in Los Angeles. The film shifts into high gear at this point as we see how their music becomes a smash and leads to a series of parties, drugs, and money.

Elton meets Manager John Reid (Richard Madden), who becomes his partner both socially and professionally as Elton embraces his Homosexuality which he has kept largely hidden.
As the record sales and hits mount, so does the destructive behaviors which leads Elton down a destructive path that threatens everything he has worked for.

The movie is a masterpiece of music and story and it cleverly uses musical montages and segments around the performances to outline various segments of his life and his rise to stardom.

The performances are amazing and Egerton was simply amazing as he not only captured the complexity of his character but performed all the vocals of the hit songs himself and they were spot on.

During our Press Screening I noticed many people singing along, tapping their feet, or bobbing their heads along with the music which helps to underscore just how timeless and popular his catalog of music has been as the songs have endured the test of time.

The film also evokes some unexpected emotion as there were more than a few people wiping their eyes during the film which at its core is a store of a young, shy boy desperate to be accepted and loved.

I truly hope the film is recognized come Awards season as it is a wonderful and memorable cinematic experience.

One of the best musicals of the year, the movie has the amazing songs of Elton John, incredible actors and the story touches you. Taron Egeton shines in this movie and show us that he really is triple threat. Don't expect rigid biopic formatting. There are liberties taken, but they all work in the fantasy element of the film. I will make an effort to see this again and I rarely go to the cinema.… Expand

The musical numbers were spectacular, I especially loved the Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting number, the I Want Love number, the Rocket Man number, The B*tch Is Back number, the Bennie and the Jets number, and the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road number. Taron Egerton's performance as Elton John was outstanding and his voice was phenomenal, he put so much emotion and heart into his performance. The soundtrack was terrific and it is one of my top 5 favorite soundtracks of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite soundtracks of all time, and one of my favorite albums of all time. The costumes were remarkably outrageous and just plain fantastic. Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Madden, Jamie Bell, Steven Mackintosh and Gemma Jones also gave great performances. This movie made me fell so many different emotions like happiness, sadness for what Elton John had to go through in his life, and anger for how Elton John's parents were towards him. I even got teary-eyed at some points in the movie. This is my favorite biography movie of 2019, my favorite biography of all time, my 2nd favorite musical of 2019, my favorite drama of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite movies of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite musicals of all time, and one of my favorite movies of all time.… Expand

Rocketman follows the story of Elton John and his rise to fame. The formula for Rocketman, and like any other musical biopic is quite familiar, but Rocketman bends and twists this formula in ways that make it special. It has a very unique execution from Elton John telling his story to a rehab group, the amazing musical numbers, and the highs and lows of Elton's life represented through metaphors. Multiple scenes in this movie aren't meant to be taken literally, but the film never goes over the top with any of them. Taron Egerton, as Elton John, does an absolutely fantastic Job and fully embodies Elton perfectly. I admire Rocketman because it sets the standard very high for musical biopics due to the fact that it tries something new. Never have I seen a movie based on an artist use their music to drive the plot forward. Many scenes in this film had me emotionally and I thoroughly enjoyed rocketman and thought it was near perfect.

This movie definitely potrays the "razzle-dazzle" and swagger life of Elton John! It really focused on his personal dilemmas and overcoming the troubles is his life. Although I was "of age" during the early years of Elton John, I wasn't his biggest fan. After falling in love with Bohemian Rhapsody last year, I went into this movie without expectations. As a long time Elton John fan, I was hoping that this movie would not disappoint. It did not! It exceed my expectations in regards to the imagery, musical score and acting. All were top notch. It exceed my expectations in regards to the imagery, musical score and acting. All were top notch. This is not an auto-biography. This was not a puff job or vanity piece. Instead, it is a reimagining of key events in Elton’s life “with embellishments”.

It’s a shame that Rocketman opened the same weekend as Godzilla (and a weekend after the successful live action Aladdin) movies. Both films had boffo box office numbers with their key demos - young adults & families. However, I suspect Rocketman will still be playing in the theaters long after these movies have been replaced.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rocketman is an Elton John biopic and so much more. Ultimately it is a story of redemption and how therapy can help someone on that journey. Weirdly, this movie spoke directly to me, it pierced my heart and at times it was uncomfortable to watch. Because if you strip away all the trappings and all the crazy Elton Johnness you are left with a human battling to find himself and that is in essence what we are all trying to do isn’t it? Some more successfully than others, some further down the line than others and of course some never make it. We just don’t all get chance to do it with a kickass soundtrack! Rocketman never loses sight of this journey. It puts it front an centre and anchors it with regular returns to a generic AA session that ultimately provides the framework for Elton to find himself and then forgive him.

Despite how personally I felt this movie, it was some of the set pieces that carried emotional weight. The beginnings of Your Song & the first gig, Crocodile Rocking at the Troubadour, that literally and figuratively signified take off were transcendent. Ultimately this film will forever be aligned with Bohemian Rhapsody because of the similarities of subject and the closeness of their releases. But where as Bohemian Rhapsody was pretty formulaic, chronological storytelling, Rocketman, in its vision, production and chutzpah is transcendent. If you only have to see one of these movies then see Rocketman. Fortunately, none of us have to make that choice and we can enjoy both. But I’m struck that where Rami Malek won the Oscar the bolder portrayal of a rock legend is Egertons. Taron Egerton & Jamie Bell are balls out great!

I will personally strangle someone who says that they didn't like this movie. My only somewhat problem with it was its accuracy, but it's a theatrical interpretation of his life anyway, not a biography. Amazing movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I watched rocketman for the first time, I was disappointed, I almost left the theatre. That was because Bohemian Rhapsody was still in the back of my mind and, I expected something comparable. Bohemian Rhapsody felt like the perfect copy (I know there is fiction in the story, but hey its Hollywood) of the reality reinterpreted by the cast but with a strong influence from the band members which on the other hand unfortunately ruined a lot of the potential the story had by skipping over some of the more colourful bits of Freddies life AND (I still don’t get why) his fable for drugs. From Rocketman I actually expected more or less the same. I expected to see a rather straight forward part of Eltons life where he struggles in real life and how this influenced his music in studio and during concerts. But Rocketman is a biogrophy with a huge touch of fantasy. Or I would now say it’s a movie with the unmistakable touch of Elton John. Making it on the one side a colourful joy trip and on the other the unforgiving truth of sex, fame and drugs waiting to get you back to the unforgiving ground of reality. (Thank you Elton for insisting!)

My first thought was: oh no, not a musical! With this thought on my mind the movie has lost me before it even started. I thought, why the hell are they singing and dancing without any reason? Only Taron Egertons interpretation of Elton held me back from leaving. After I left the theatre it took me a whole day to understand the idea behind this film. When I realized where I was wrong, I had to watch this movie again. And again, the day after. I realized that what you see are bits of Eltons memory and his deranged drug mind as he is still "high as a kite" when he begins his story in which reality and Eltons music are mixed up. If you watch this movie from this perspective everything makes sense. And you will have such a wonderful trip. I enjoyed watching Taron Egertons acting. It is emotional, funny, fantastic. He is Elton Hercules John.… Expand

One of the most underrated movies of all time, "Rocketman" is one of the best musicals of the decade. The art direction is amazing. They recreated the rockstar's figurines and clothing with mastery, filling the screen with vibrant, beautiful colors. The movie is also not afraid to show Elton's sexual life, and it does it in a subtle and artistic way.

"Rocketman" deserved way more than he got. He only had one Oscar nomination, for best Original Song, and it won, but the picture deserves a lot.… Expand

It would not be fair to compare this movie with Bohemian Rhapsody, because they´re not the same movie. Taron Egerton is the star of the film, his performance is worthy of an Oscar, I mean, he sings, dances and acts. But his performance was not the only good one, everyone is absolutely great, there´s no problems with any of them. The musical scenes are phenomenal (specially "Saturday´s Night Alright For Fighting", you will wanna dance in this one; also call out to the "Rocketman" sequence) The only thing that bothered me was the passing in some scenes but it´s something minor. In the end, "Rocketman" is a glance at the life of an icon, in his point of view and using his personal style, the result is extraordinary. Please, go watch this movie, is an amazing experience that I can´t wait to watch again.… Expand

First of all, Taron Egerton and Kit Connor were amazing as Elton John. Kit Connor plays him when he’s a kid and you barely see him but he just leaves such an impact that it’s great. Now, Taron Egerton is just amazing as Elton John and he helps make him seem like a normal human which is hard for somebody like Elton. As I was watching him I got so invested into his performance that at certain points I actually was starting to tear up all because of his performance. He also, at the request of Elton John, did all of his own singing and it’s amazing. I really hope that he gets a nomination for his role. Jamie Bell, who plays Bernie Taupin, also did a great job. Instead of just using the songs as if he was recording them the movie used them to help transitions from one point to another and it was really clever. The music was used to help montage parts of his life and show what was going on in his life. This was definitely the best option because if they didn’t do it then the movie probably would have dragged out longer. This movie is two hours and one minute long and honestly, I never felt it dragging on for too long. Each moment in his life felt the appropriate amount of time spent on it but there were certain points that I wished they would have spent a bit longer on. The one thing I would’ve added in though is little title cards that say what year it is because it got a little confusing at times what year it was and how much time has passed since the last scene. Like I mentioned earlier in this review the story got me emotional and that’s because of how the film felt like a fly on a wall throughout his life and showing the ups and downs he went through and honestly you can’t watch this movie and not just want to help him out. All of the costumes in this film are hands down spectacular. You can see how much care and work went into making these costumes look as accurate as possible to the real thing. In the end, this movie does an amazing job of showing the like of Elton John and definitely not holding anything back. I highly recommend watching this even if you aren’t a fan. I give Rocketman a 9.5/10.… Expand

This is a great movie. Rocketman is everything Bohemian Rhapsody should have been. Here are the very few negatives to this film. Some of the family drama does feel kinda forced. One such thing would be that the “John” in Elton John’s name did not come from John Lennon. Rocketman had very few inaccuracies unlike Bohemian Rhapsody where they changed parts of Freddie Mercury’s life to fit a story. The film does start to hit the same beats as every other musical biopic out there. Here are the positives. The acting is phenomenal. Taron Egerton does an outstanding job as Elton John. He embodies so much emotion into his performance and he is an outstanding singer. I am confident in thinking that Egerton’s performance could be a possible Oscar nomination. Jamie Bell and Bryce Dallas Howard both do an outstanding job as the people who Elton cares about. Richard Madden does a great job as a manager and also the “villain” of the story. Even the child actors who portrayed a young Elton John do a great job. The musical numbers in this film are amazing. Each musical number has its own visual flare. They keep your interest and get the other characters and surrounding extras involved. Unlike Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman’s musical scenes are intriguing. Costume Design and Set Design are also really good in this film. The costumes look almost exactly like the actual costumes Elton John wore. The sets just look amazing. The tone for the film remains consistent and the film is paced really well also. The narrative for this film is great. The film focuses on Elton’s John musical skills, alcoholism, and drug abuse. Bohemian Rhapsody barely focuses on the effects of Mercury’s drug abuse while Rocketman shows the effects of what happens with these substances. The film’s structure is great. The story is told from Elton John while he is therapy and ends with him overcoming his problems.. While I do thoroughly like Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman is 100% the superior film. Overall, Rocketman provides amazing performances, outstanding musical numbers, and great costume design. I give Rocketman a 9/10.… Expand

Through these little background stories of the songs the songs of Elton John seem much more authentic. The sound of the songs in the film is also very good, you always like to listen to them!
The actor Taron Egerton could perform Elton John very well in Rocketman. Important parts of Elton John's life are shown well and you get a good insight into Elton John's (sometimes hard) life.
The only thing that I don't feel so good about is that the song Rocketman, which gave the movie its name, wasn't very well received. I would have liked a better representation for the song here - instead of randomly showing it in the middle of the movie.
To compare Rocketman now with the recently published biography "Bohemian Rapsody" about Freddie Mercury with Queen: Both movies are very good movies about the musicians Freddie Mercury and Elton John. I have to say that Bohemian Rapsody was a little better, but Rocketman is also very good. Rocketman was built more like a musical than a simple biography. But I think it's very fitting and really good for Rocketman.

In summary I can say that I can recommend the film Rocketman to every Elton John fan and lover of his music. Elton John's songs are very well portrayed in Rocketman and you learn a lot about Elton John's life. I can also tell you who likes "Bohemian Rapsody" will also like Rocketman!… Expand

Taron Egerton was brilliant playing Elton, he had an amazing singing voice and as with all his other roles he knows how to play your emotions. The storytelling was terrific, showing all of Sir Elton's problems from a young boy who seemed to be ignored by his dad to and iglobal icon who showed how anybody can make there dreams a reality! I'm not a very emotional person however, seeing the depiction of a legend struggling woth addiction, loneliness and a whole manner of different problems really tugged at my heart Especialy with the litlle boy asking "when are you gonna hug me" luckily my dathos is 1 of the best films I have seen in years and can't wait for it to be released on dvd so I can see it again.te couldnt see me holding back tears… Expand

This film tells the life story of Elton John showing how he rose to fame, including the struggles with his personal life and dealing with addiction.This largely engaged me through the film being an all out musical, filmed like a full on dream sequence with most emotional scenes showing the characters breaking into song.I really like that this wasn't just an all out biopic with one thing happening and then the other.

Overall the only flaw I had with this film is it can sometimes suffer some pacing issues in parts of the film but it didn't ruin the experience of watching the film at all.… Expand

When watching Rocketman I couldn't help but compare the film to last years Bohemian Rhapsody, especially since director Dexter Fletcher ended up taking up the reigns to finish the chaotic production of Bohemian Rhapsody following SingersWhen watching Rocketman I couldn't help but compare the film to last years Bohemian Rhapsody, especially since director Dexter Fletcher ended up taking up the reigns to finish the chaotic production of Bohemian Rhapsody following Singers departure. Whereas Bohemian Rhapsody shied away from showing some of the more controversial moments in Mercury's life and seemed unable to live up to the larger than life presence of the band, Rocketman doesn't try to back away from Elton's R rated life and is infused with the kind of energy which an Elton John movie deserves.

The story is the same kind of music bopic you've probably seen before in something like Ray, Walk the Line or Hard Walk: The Dewey Cox Story. Following a difficult childhood, an artist becomes one of the biggest stars in the world. However the stresses of fame mixed with their own personal problems leads them in to a life of addiction and push away all those they care about. This forces them to fight their own demons to overcome their struggles and find happiness in their life. I don't know whether I should criticise Hollywood for not greenlighting more original biopics or music prodigies for living such similar lives.

Though what differentiates this story from a standard music biopic is Elton as a character. Whilst there's always a slight concern when the subject of a biopic plays a role as the producer of his own movie, since they may attempt to force a romanticised version of themselves to the screen, it's clear that Elton doesn't have a problem in showing the painful moments of his life or the darker side of his personality. Instead he embraces his pasts mistakes and own them as part of how he became who he is today.

Another major part of bringing Elton's personality to life on screen is that Edgerton may have been the best choice they could have made for playing him. Beyond nailing his look, he seemed able to switch between the emotional wreck that he was in his personal life in to the hypnotic on stage charisma so naturally. In one of the films best moments we see him broken down and exhausted about to step on stage, before breaking in to a smile and a happy march the moment that spotlight hits him. With this and the comedic skills he shows off in the Kingsman series, he's definitely an actor who I'm curious to see where their career is going to go.

But you couldn't have an Elton John movie without an Elton John Wardrobe and the movie does not disappoint. From the moment he steps on screen dressed as a sparkling devil, with wings so large you'll wonder how made it through doors, to the hundred other costumes we see Edgerton wearing throughout, the film this ends up being a greatest hits compilation of both Elton's music and his outfits.

Unlike some other music biopics, this movie doesn't try to just copy Elton's musical performances. The filmmakers are smart enough to know that no matter how good Edgerton is, there's no way they could just use Elton's songs as it would never live up to just watching a concert film of Elton performing. Instead they claim their own versions of these songs, blending Edgerton's great voice with a style more similar to a stage musical to give them a separate identity to Elton's. Combine this with the impressively executed dance sequences, which similar to La La Land feel like modern day versions of a classic Hollywood musical, these sequences stand apart from Elton's as their own entertaining versions.

The film mixes these great sequences with a constant kinetic energy which flows through every scene, moving song to song and blending scenes together seamlessly. Especially later on in the film, where Elton's drugged out state leads scenes to transition into one another at times like a dream and at other times like a nightmare. Though at times the film carries this momentum to a fault, with scenes moving so quickly that we hardly get a chance to breath before the films already moved on to the next song.

We do also get a slightly rushed ending, with all the loose emotional plot threads in his life being tied together in a single scene and leaving us with a brief Animal House style of cliff notes for how the rest of Elton's life went instead of something more creative like a montage showing us the rest of Elton's life. But even with this, Rocketman is both one of the best music biopics and a thoughtful look on the self-destructive effects of addiction. I just hope that every future music biopic is given the same amount of care and thought as this film has been given.… Expand

That's why a movie about celebration will make more money than a movie about the reality of life. Somehow they make Bohemian Rhapsody upbeat even though Freddie died. Anyway, we have our own downbeat moments and we don't need to pay to see someone else's troubles. Nonetheless, for those who want more reality, yes, Rocketman is more true to life than Bohemian Rhapsody. Rocketman is a good picture, where the focus is Elton John overcoming and surviving, and his music comes second. Opening up so soon after the massive success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" this movie has to do a lot of business to match it financially though the bottom line is "Rocketman" is a much better movie showing who the man is including all the bad out front and not being shy either about his addictions or his Gay life. At the very beginning we see Elton in a massive devil's outfit invading a rehab center and talking about his coke, crack, sex, shopping weed, alcohol among various addictions plus his bulimia and anger issues. It is at this point the fantasy musical numbers start along with his life before he became famous and the years that established him as a star up until he makes the decision to stop the drugs and booze.

Targon Egerton is stellar as John Elton using his own voice to sing the Elton/Taupin songs without imitating the former. He goes through a heart attack, an attempted suicide (fantasy or truth?), loving people without the love being returned. He has a mother who tells him she wishes he had never been born, that because he was gay he would never be loved, a father who never hugs him and one day just leaves and never comes back, a lover/manager who doesn't love him, cheats on him and his feeling that he doesn't deserve to be loved. Matthew Illesley does a fine job as the child Reginald Dwight as does Kit Connor as the teenager Reginald, both to become the Elton John who is in so much pain as a young man.

The one man who loves Elton John is his working partner, Bernie Taupin the man who wrote the words and still does and they both claim not to have had an argument in those 50 years, is not gay. He is played by Jamie Bell who deserves as much recognition as Egerton does. A third person who gives an explosive performance is Richard Madden as a self-serving manager and lover who betrays John in many ways.

Playing his mother Bryce Dallas Howard comes over as too stereotyped in some of the scenes and Steven Macintosh as the cold father who doesn't love his son coveys that cold man while Gemma Jones as his grandmother comes across as the only adult who loves and believes in this child.

There are several supporting actors who deliver the goods but it is Targon Egerton the whole movie revolves around and whose performance makes the "Rocketman" an outstanding movie. While there may be one too many fantasy song and dance numbers slowing the movie down the very effective ending will touch you just as it touched many in the audience today to applaud the movie. Be sure to stay for the ending credits for the happily ever after ending even Hollywood couldn't improve on!… Expand

Unlike "Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again," where the staging of the musical numbers seemed perfunctory, a lot of creativity and imagination is on display in "Rocketman." The film does an excellent job of showing the passage of time without slowing the film down with subtitles and awkward transitions. However, fans of Elton's music will probably wish they got more than short excerpts of each song. Overall, a very good biopic that avoids hagiography and cheap sentimentality.… Expand

It helps that the story betrays Elton with respect but doesn't shy away from the dark times in his live. Where most films would have tried to trim down the dark parts of his live this film dives head first into it. The biggest asset that this film has is the music numbers. Now normally I'm not a big fan of Elton John songs, yet this film presents each of them in a strange and unique manner that I couldn't help but get into them. In conclusion if you are an Elton John fan than you'll like this film, heck even if your not you might get some enjoyment out of this film.… Expand

It's impossible not to compare it with Bohemian Rhapsody. Well, Rocketman is everything that the other wasn't: extraordinary performance by all the actors, spectacular script, great direction and scenery, drama and empathy for the characters, the drama with his parents is very emotional, they dive into his homosexual relationships and drug addiction. The director (Dexter Fletcher) is the same as Bohemian: it was Bryan Singer but Fletcher finished it. Another thing that went well is "the musical", Bohemian or A Star Is Born were not, they were about singers and that's why there were songs. I don't like the musical genre but this one is very good. The songs are very well integrated to what he tells us. In the end it feels long and stretched. "The Lion King" o "Sacrifice" are missing.… Expand

TL;DR - The most shocking thing for me is even though I am a huge Queen fan and my knowledge of Elton John's work stops at Lion King, I still enjoyed Rocketman more as a movie. Taron Egerton is absolutely captivating in his portrayal alongTL;DR - The most shocking thing for me is even though I am a huge Queen fan and my knowledge of Elton John's work stops at Lion King, I still enjoyed Rocketman more as a movie. Taron Egerton is absolutely captivating in his portrayal along with stellar editing and writing makes the Biopic/Musical a worthwhile watch. My lack of knowledge for Elton John's timeless work and personal life definitely had a lot of impact on my enjoyment and I assume is why I loved this movie much more as a work of semi fiction over a true fan or follower hoping to see his true life story.

The Good
I was far more astonished at my own reaction for this film than you can ever understand. Even though it has some of my most hated movie elements; i.e, family drama, A Musical, sleazebag love interest and many more all of these elements are held up with good writing, beautiful cinematography, an understated excellence in performances creating something more than any genre tagline I can label. Everyone in this movie bring their 'A' game which helps propel this well written story ahead of the pack of generic Biopics, the editing definitely helps but the strong dialogue writing makes the character interactions some of the most powerful scenes in the movie. Particularly the ending left me with some good food for thought as we see Taron Egerton make his concluding steps to the end of his character portrayal.

The Bad
But as no movie can be perfect there were quite a few gripes I had with this movie, very, very minor gripes in comparison to the good entertainment value this film provides us. A few places the pacing seems to dwindle a little too much, the sleazebag manager/lover could have benefited from better character writing and a little more emphasis on the best part which is Elton John's interaction with his friends and family would have helped.
Even though the character/friends and family interactions were the best part of the film it seems to lack a little, slightly over-shadowed by a few too many musical numbers. Some quieter more dialogue based character development scenes over certain Musical numbers was necessary to make this a tighter and more streamlined experience.… Expand

As Elton John, Taron Edgerton does his own very serviceable interpretation of one of the best-known voices of the last half century – a refreshing contrast to the “amalgamation” of voices used when Freddie Mercury sings in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Where Mercury’s homosexuality was shrouded and underplayed to the point of ambiguity, John’s is quite direct. While “Bohemian Rhapsody” creates the false impression of being historically accurate, “Rocketman” conveys from the outset that it will be impressionistic, fanciful and fantastic (in every sense). Ironically, “Rocketman” is the more honest of the two films. After focusing initially on Reggie Dwight/Elton John’s early home life, particularly his problematic relationships with both parents, the action centers on his early career, backing up American soul acts as they toured in the UK, meeting and beginning to work with lyricist Bernie Taupin (an appealing Jamie Bell), his meteoric rise following a much-acclaimed performance at The Troubadour in LA in August, 1970, and his quick descent into booze, drugs and a smorgasbord of other addictions.

This film is a tribute to Elton John’s long-time friendship with Bernie Taupin. While family members and assorted hangers-on are a regular source of disappointment, “Rocketman” reveals Taupin as the most steadfast of friends. In a nice bit of symbolism, John and Taupin co-authored the new song “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” to serve as “Rocketman’s” closing number. The song is a duet between John and actor Edgerton.

“Rocketman” also is a meditation on love, using John’s travails to demonstrate that, before you can receive healthy, enduring love from others, you have to love yourself. This theme is foreshadowed in Taupin’s 2001 lyric: “I want love, but it’s impossible. A man like me, so irresponsible…”

Lee Hall (who wrote the screenplays for the Billy Elliott film and musical) has crafted a script where the songs are a focal point but also are much more integrated into the arc of the story than the typical musical fashioned from a prominent performer’s song book (I’m looking at you Abba – “Mama Mia, here I go again, My, my, how can I resist ya?” Not that hard, it turns out). Twenty-one John/Taupin songs appear in “Rocketman.” “Rocketman” concludes with a strutting, triumphant rendition of “I’m Still Standing.” In the closing credits we learn that John is now 28 years sober. If you attend expecting this film to be a gauzy, frivolous, irrationally upbeat musical, you’ll leave disappointed. On the other hand, if you’re open to experiencing a film that offers an honest, sometimes painful, account of a star who often felt that he was “burning out his fuse up here alone,” you’ll be richly rewarded.… Expand

Rhapsody’s quasi-director, Dexter Fletcher takes on another charismatic and troubled figure in Rocketman, an ode to the song-writing legend that is Elton John. Fletcher’s film is a fervid breath of fresh air on the biopic scene, a moving and undeniably feel-good flick that takes a look at the height of Elton’s turbulent career. Rocketman is not your straight biopic by any means; first and foremost, it’s an unashamed musical that dismisses the chronology of Elton’s music for a smartly crafted jukebox soundtrack of some of the singer’s most memorable tunes. The form of Rocketman is a stroke of genius from Dexter Fletcher; gone are the limits of factuality and linear storytelling, in favour of time-jumping and metaphors… all complete with the Elton-esque pizazz of a modern musical. From the beginning, Rocketman sets itself out from the crowd and the ride that follows is a gripping tale of love, talent and the tempestuous nature of fame.
Perhaps the greatest asset lies in a brilliant central performance from Taron Egerton. Where Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury was a remarkable turn in impressionism, Egerton’s portrayal of Elton is an altogether meatier performance full of unbridled charisma and nuance. It is said that the film’s subject himself requested that Egerton refrain from an impersonation and instead play “his own version” of Elton John; this certainly comes through in Egerton’s role, less of an impression but still a masterful turn from the actor, who simply engulfs the part. The supporting cast here is strong too; Jamie Bell’s Bernie Taupin is a heartfelt performance and Bryce Dallas Howard is unrecognisably nasty as Elton’s distant mother. Richard Madden’s portrayal of the star’s manager and lover John Reid is a little predictably ‘boo-hiss’, but this is masked by some other delightful appearances (Stephen Graham briefly steals the show by practically chewing the scenery in the first third).
Dexter Fletcher casts a smooth hand over the production, proving himself to be a sure maestro of the musical genre. Though perhaps some songs could have been more suitably placed, there are some gorgeous moments that really make use of both the energy and heart of Elton’s music; a rendition of ‘Your Song’ sung solo by Egerton at the piano is slow and goose bump-worthy whereas the ‘Saturday Night’s Alright’ sequence early on in the film is a joyous burst of colour and choreography. It is of course well known that much of John’s career wasn’t all blissful song and dance; Rocketman takes its time to reflect on the issues of substance abuse and sexuality, often in a thoughtful and compassionate way. The film certainly doesn’t hide away from the flaws of its subject… and it is in Elton’s many faults that the most impactful moments appear. While most of it is expertly paced, the final third suffers a little from a meandering focus, becoming a slightly repetitive chorus of psychedelic escapades and impassioned arguments that certainly takes the scenic route towards what ends up being a pleasing, if slightly cheesy conclusion. In the end, however, there is so much that is excellent about Rocketman that makes up for its problems. It is not necessarily revolutionary (certainly not in its story) yet still manages to give its own flavour to the often placid biopic, using the music of its star not just as a plot aspect but as a structural device that really makes everything tick. Rocketman is an honest depiction of fame, both of its hardships and triumphs; it may not be all smooth sailing (with Elton’s life and the film itself), but Fletcher puts forward a vigorously entertaining piece of work, bolstered by an outstanding Taron Egerton. If nothing else, you’ll appreciate the mesmerising musicality of it all.… Expand

My biggest complaint is there wasn’t enough songs. It didn’t go past the period into when I would have been listening to his music on the radio. A year passed since I have seen "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the cinema. And now the same movie, but more colorful? Not exactly. It does try some new thinks of which I most liked the musical interferences.
"Rocketman" to me is independent enough to be good and it is, too which Taron Egerton pays a lot of tribute with his wonderful acting, he had obviously fun with.… Expand

On the surface, there will be many comparisons between Rocketman, opening May 31, starring Taron Egerton as Elton John, and last year’s box office hit Bohemian Rhapsody, which starred Rami Malek in his Academy Award winning performance as Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury. These are obvious comparisons: biopic, 1970’s-1980’s time period, flamboyant musical superstar, struggles with sexuality, well-known and infectious tunes, tragedy and triumph. While that seems like a lot of similarities,Rocketman takes a very different path than the otherwise straightforward recapping of life events likeBohemian Rhapsody.

It is right in the tagline on the posters of Rocketman: “Based on a True Fantasy.” This film is a rousing, jukebox musical with Elton John’s songs weaving in as the story unfolds, infusing the various set-pieces with emotion, depth and ultimately a lot of entertainment. If you are expecting a biopic, forget it. Start thinking musical. The characters sing to each other in Elton’s songs. For example, there is a sequence where Elton, his mom, grandmother and estranged father are sitting in separate parts of the family home singing to the audience. Another sequence is when Elton stalks through a party singing “Tiny Dancer”. These fantasy sequences use the laundry list of hits to uniquely tell this story that could have been another been-there-done-that movie.

Taron Egerton, who is best known for the Kingsman movies, brings a brash energy to his portrayal of Elton John. Egerton has a great voice and he does an admirable job suggesting John’s singing voice without trying to be a carbon-copy. The performance goes from young, vibrant, talented and arrogant to balding, isolated, and damaged, struggling with fame; and, Egerton hits every note just right without missing some of the humor in it all. He seems to be having a ton of fun show up in crazier and crazier costumes, some very iconic. While the film is a showcase for Egerton, the remainder of the cast is uniformly good, including Jamie Bell as John’s writing partner, Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden, who best known from Game of Thrones, and Bryce Dallas Howard, as John’s mom. And, they all sing!

Now, the film does get a little episodic as it goes along though it never feels like it is dragging. The plot points are still there like any other straightforward biopic. Plus, you know Elton John survives in the end and continues to be successful and respected. If people breaking out in song in the middle of a scene puts you off, then maybe be cautious about going to the theater on this one, but I really think that it is worth at the very least a matinee price because the makers of Rocketman really were thoughtful about putting the greatness of Elton John front and center in using his music as punctuation to the man’s life story. For Elton fans, musical fans, and for anyone desperate to see people try something new with stale formulas,Rocketman is worth the money.… Expand

The title Rocketman doesn't really work for this musical biopic by Dexter Fletcher, a longtime actor trying to direct and with not much success. As others have noted, the production is kind of all over the place, some parts decent other parts forgettable. Many key sequences are put to music which are hit and miss, take Rocketman for instance, you'd think it would have something to do with outer space or its loneliness but they pair it with a hospital scene, ugh. Taron Egerton excels in the role but the supporting cast fades pretty much. The film, with Elton John as one of the EPs, does reveal to us his life of being mostly unloved by parents and those that profess to love him, with Bernie Taupin really being the only one by his side the whole time. One key disappointment was that it gave such short shrift to his first marriage to a woman and whiffed on the associated "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" hit song. Another disappointment is that it doesn't keep us informed of what year many of the scenes play out. This biopic could've and should've been so much better. But overall, I must say that it's a fun biopic of Elton John, albeit a pretty standard and predictable one that does mirror the style of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' a little too much for my liking at times. It also felt constructed more like a Broadway Mlmusical often times, as characters would suddenly break into song and dance throughout much of the film, so it made me feel as though Elton John's life maybe would've been more interesting and compellingly told through a stage or Broadway musical rather than just another film biopic. Nevertheless, Taron Egerton was absolutely perfect as Elton (and if you ask me, he even gives Rami Malek's Oscar-winning performance from 'Bohemian Rhapsody' a run for its money!) He not only looked quite a bit like him, but had such great emotional, musical, and singing chops from start to finish! He's by far the main reason to check this out, otherwise it's pretty much what you'd expect from a musical biopic, but is still fun and charming enough.… Expand

'Rocketman' is everything a musical biopic should be. Well, I wouldn’t really call it a biopic, as a musical told in a rated R fairy tale seems more appropriate. While occasionally falling into the “Walk The Line” of cliches, but never has a biopic be presented in such an extraordinary and yet sore fashion. Some things may be overly dramatized or just didn’t happen, but then again it is “based on a true fantasy”.

Taron Egerton as Elton John is perfect casting. I’m already aware that Egerton is a singer, and yet what surprised me the most was how much he sings just like Elton. No lip syncing or donkey teeth, just an honest portrayal of a national treasure. I hope Egerton gets some serious award consideration for this performance, because if anyone deserves some recognition for leading actor, it’s him. I no longer see him as Eggsy from Kingsman. He is Elton John.

Jamie Bell was excellent as Berine Taupin, Aka the sweetest eyes you will ever seen. The chemistry between Bell and Egerton was a match made in heaven just not the romantic kind.

Richard Madden was a brutal force as John Reed. A cold and controlling snake that sucks away any happiness in Elton’s life. Maddens vocals was pretty damn good, which I’m surprised people haven’t brought up yet.

I loved how the songs were integrated in the film. The fame and sparkly glitter can’t hide open wounds. There’s a scene that’s almost plucked straight out of Bob Fosse’s ‘All That Jazz’, where Elton is carried off in an ambulance after he attempts suicide, but thrown back into a stadium like a wild animal. I found it incredibly devastating how he pretends to be happy when performing on stage while being dead inside. I also noticed the lyrics had been changed to "I miss my LIFE" from "I miss my wife”. How one word can change the meaning and perspective of the song.

Perhaps my favorite scene in the whole movie is when Reggie sits at the piano and composes "Your Song" for the very first time. I thought the scene perfectly captures the overall feeling of the song. The overwhelming feeling of love and appreciation you have for a special person in your life. It gives you the impression that these people existed in real life and cared for each other. Men who are too afraid to open up their feelings and telling their friends how much they love them, while living in a world that’s so cynical and unkind. So yeah, I nearly teared up. Such a beautiful moment.

At his highs and lows, Elton has lived life like no other. “You will never be famous”, his father told him when he was a little boy. “You will never be loved”, his mother told him after he tells the truth about his sexuality. “I’ll still be collecting my twenty percent long after you've killed yourself”, his producer manage told him during his lowest.

Despite every obstacle Elton faced his life and how depressing the tone may be, but then again, you’re looking at a true survivor, because he’s still standing.

Overall rating: You can have that hug now, Elton

Unfortunately, there were no rockets in this film 0/10 too bad too because I really like rockets. Go watch the Lego movie instead

First off, this is much more of a musical than Bohemian Rhapsody. I do think Taron Egerton gave a great performance as Elton and Jamie Bell also gave a great performance as Bernie Taupin but I kept thinking I wish that it would be a littleFirst off, this is much more of a musical than Bohemian Rhapsody. I do think Taron Egerton gave a great performance as Elton and Jamie Bell also gave a great performance as Bernie Taupin but I kept thinking I wish that it would be a little bit slower at times, painting more of a picture in terms of what he was like as a child, his early years. There is a bit featured but not too much. Also when he starts to become famous, there isn't much shown in terms of his success in the UK and obviously he is a big name in the US but he must have spent more time touring the UK before he became the household name he is in America. Ok so perhaps im being a little picky - I certainly can't say I didn't enjoy the flamboyant stage performances and the choreographed numbers, I did but I suppose I felt it somehow distracted from the main story of the mans life. It certainly made me want to learn more about him. Of course I understand if he didn't want the context of certain things entirely explained as such and certainly as a film in itself, its visually quite appealing and its certainly entertaining.

I also liked that its a 'warts and all' depiction - it doesn't shy away from highlighting the many addictions and other personal issues that Elton had to deal with. Its certainly a slightly different way of portraying a story like Eltons, being categorised as a musical fantasy film and I can certainly see how it qualifies as that sort of a film. If your a fan of Eltons music, then I'd recommend it, yes.… Expand

Pese a no ser yo demasiado fan de Elton John, lo conozco, pero no me tocó vivir esa época donde triunfó tanto, a pesar de que lo admiro, es una buena película, que pese a eso, a no ser yo un gran fan, me ha gustado y conmovido.

Me gustó mucho que sea musical a la vieja usanza, no como otras películas, sin entrar en comparaciones, Bohemian Rapsody o Yesterday, que tiran más por el drama-comedia con toques musicales, esto es un musical, cantan cuando comen, cantan cuando están por la calle, a pesar de que también hay actuaciones musicales como si fuera un concierto, no olvidarse de que es un biopic, pero me gusta eso.
El actor protagonista, Egerton, es la bomba, es muy bueno, no sé si imita a la perfección a Elton John, lo dicho, no soy un gran conocedor, pero me lo creí con creces, me lo creí, se me hizo creíble pese a que estaba interpretando no a un personaje cualquiera, a una persona real, así que punto muy a favor.
La película es muy significativa, tiene mucho significado vaya, mucho simbolismo, pero no me ha transmitido mucho, eso sí, tiene un buen argumento, la narrativa me gusta, sin ser algo de otro mundo.
La fotografía es esplendorosa, quizás para emular ese arte de la vestimenta del artista, tan colorido y demás, la fotografía juega con muchos colores y está muy guay.
Eso sí, lo mejor, sin duda alguna de la película, el vestuario y la caracterización, una auténtica locura, así como los escenarios, sobre todo en los momentos musicales, me parecieron fascinantes.
En conclusión, es una película honesta y amable, tiene un mensaje muy bonito y tiene partes técnicas muy buenas, a parte de Egerton, un 10, pero por lo que tengo entendido el apartado musical flojea algo, aún así, una película buena, chula de ver.… Expand

This is a really difficult movie to critique. Elton is my favorite musician of all time. This movie is filmed in a fantastical musical style, taking leeway with the timelines of the songs. For example, they have him starting with CrocodileThis is a really difficult movie to critique. Elton is my favorite musician of all time. This movie is filmed in a fantastical musical style, taking leeway with the timelines of the songs. For example, they have him starting with Crocodile Rock at the famous Troubadour show that rocketed him to fame. That song was written several years later and was never played at the Troubadour. The second half of the film is a complete downer, concentrating on his drug and alcohol abuse which is extensive. I can't help but think that Elton experienced SOME good times during this period as well. He even toured Russia with Ray Cooper during this time, something nobody had ever done before that was never mentioned in the film. I was very disappointed that his fantastic band mates, Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, and Dee Murray were never mentioned and they certainly had a part in the overall success. As far as the portrayal, Taron Egerton does a great job. I honestly would have preferred he lip sang to Elton's songs, because his voice is nothing like Eltons and I found it distracting, but at least he can sing, and he looks somewhat like Elton. Overall the movie was such a downer that it isn't something I would want to watch again. The movie seems to have been made with Broadway in mind rather than a straight up Documentary style. Not my cup of tea.… Expand

Oh how conflicted I am after watching Rocketman.

As for the positives, it is very evident the heart and soul that went into this production. It's also refreshing that it doesn't resort to hagiography or making Elton out to be a saint. If youOh how conflicted I am after watching Rocketman.

As for the positives, it is very evident the heart and soul that went into this production. It's also refreshing that it doesn't resort to hagiography or making Elton out to be a saint. If you know his history or have seen his documentary Tantrums & Tiaras, then you know that Elton was prone to angry outbursts, not to mention his battle with drugs. The film doesn't paint him as a saint, and it's all the better for it.

As for Taron Egerton, he absolutely demands year end awards notice. If Rami Malik's lip-syncing, surface level, impersonation of a performance can win him an Oscar, it is Egerton who truly deserves the praise. His voice is beautiful, and instead of just trying to mimic Elton John, he finds the perfect balance of embodying him while still making the role his own. He is absolutely phenomenal.

Unfortunately, Rocketman never takes off the way I wanted it to. There are some stand out musical numbers, but more often than not they end before they are able to truly exhilarate. While placing certain songs at the wrong times in John's life. There are plenty of other fabrications or embellishments of his life (he didn't get his last name from John Lennon, for instance) that are just unnecessary.

I'm a huge Elton John fan, and Rocketman is far from terrible. But unfortunately it's also a bit of a disappointment. Still, Egerton is outstanding.

I love music but I hate musicals. Always have. So "Rocketman" on that level does nothing for me. Let's look at the problem with a film that tries to be a bio but insists on inserting the usual "musical" interludes with big productions, seemingly coming out of nowhere, bad edits of some of rock's greatest songs of all time, and next to no real focus on John's and Taupin's songs as far as inspiration, the story behind some of the songs, and again poor editing that cuts some of the songs in the worst possible places. The other problem as a musician myself is how the film's directors and Elton himself as Executive Producer saw fit to totally ignore his band of those glory years, not even mentioning them by name. So I will. Where is Davey Johnstone, Elton's superb guitarist, who contributed the tough edge of the music and great rhythm work on John's remake of The Who's "Pinball Wizard" or the furious guitar on "The **** Is Back"? No mention of him, bassist Dee Murray or drummer Nigel Ollson. Not a very nice thing to do to a faithful band if you ask me. The attention given Bernie Taupin was certainly important because he was and for all I know is a gifted lyricist who had a knack for putting into words a lot of the angst, personal strife and emotions of John's life. And the forays into fantastical episodes such as the scene in L.A.'s legendary Troubadour Lounge where Elton John made his first U.S. appearance and featured part of "Crocodile Rock" and everybody on the floor floating around I found overblown and silly. What those scenes were trying to do was to mythologize the man to ridiculous degrees. He was already a mythological figure without resorting to unnecessary production numbers that only slowed the story down. But not all is lost. When the film stays focused on the real life and times of Elton John from childhood to superstardom, Taron Egerton does a great job as John. He indeed does a good job singing, although I would have preferred Elton's own vocals, as was the case with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and just some straight numbers without the song and dance routine. Like so many other icons in the entertainment industry, who are surrounded by sycophants, money grubbing thieves and hangers on all leaching the blood out of said performer, Elton John too suffered from the usual drug and alcohol addictions, struggled with his homosexuality at a time when it was indeed risky to step out and declare himself gay. All in all, if you like the musical format you'll find this a better film than I did, but it isn't bad by any stretch. It just irks me that the band itself was totally left out of the film. Of course Elton is sober now and has been 28 years, good for him. He and his husband have been together for a very long time and he has donated $450 million dollars to HIV/AIDS research worldwide. That is a lot of money and Sir Elton is to be commended. An up and down bio-pic aside, Elton John was one of the great rock and roll performers in history, wrote some of the most beautiful music ever created in a pop setting "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" my favorite tune of his that is on a par with timeless classics of anything by the Beatles, and even tunes that will always be with us like "Over The Rainbow" or "When You Wish Upon A Star", which were enormously popular tunes in their day and rightfully so. Sometimes the world gets lucky and perfect or near perfect music is bestowed upon us destined to last forever, like some of the classical bits Elton practiced as a youth.… Expand
