Jared Leto is so unbelievably bad in this. The rest of the cast, Jennifer Connelly mainly, and the soundtrack is really good.

Last hour was **** up, uncomfortable, and depressing. Probably the most messed up thing I've ever seen.

I love the style in which it is filmed, there are lots of split-screen technique, exaggerated sound effects and huge close ups, and all these manage to be stylishly used. The music is stunning too, Aronofsky directs superbly and the script is brutal and very honest. Requiem for a Dream has one underlying theme, the creeping menace of addiction, this theme is explored in a lot of forms and with chilling and compelling effect. Not only that, the highs and lows of drug-taking are conveyed. The story is hard-hitting, moving and draws you in and the characters feel real. The acting helps with this, Ellen Burstyn is amazing and gives one of the best performances of the decade. Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly are also excellent, and Marlon Wayans I think hasn't been better. In conclusion, a powerful film, while not all people may like it it is for me one of the most important films on this subject. 9/10 Bethany Cox Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Darren Aronofsky goes from Pi to Requiem For a Dream with first movie's popularity. In Pi, Aronofsky does a individual analysis about Max Cohen, but, now, we have four characters in a same perspective, all of them showed with a social and critic apresentation, not niilist, abstracte and metaforic like in Mother!, the recently Aronofsky's movie. In 2017 movie, the characters are only metaphors who lives to theirself, like as they aren't a part of a big system, but, in Requiem For a Dream, Harry, Sara, Marion and Tyrone (and their psicological state) is consequence of the world.

Requiem For a Dream is more easy to understand and interprate than others word of the director like Noah and The Fountain because of the many simbologies and metaphors in this movies, that talk about religion and espiritualism, when the poetic linguage that separate telespectator and the real meaning of this elements. In this case, Aronofsky try to transform the interpretation in Requiem For a Dream the most possible simple, not in an obvious form, but thought fear and pertubation, to focus on the importance of the mainly movie theme (drugs) or only to be a opposite to metaforic linguage of the first work.

Darren Aronofsky is knowed by him ambientalist ativism, something not hidden in movies like Noah, biblic story that talk about the relationship between God, human and nature, Mother!, with its simbologies to mother nature, and The Fountain in a analyse sobrenatural about this theme. In this works, there are the preference to open cinematographic plans to show all the nature and its natural elements, in opposition to close plans focused in a small part of human body like pupils of the eyes dilating when using the drug and to show the own substance in body. Only with this comparation, we can see the opposite between natural life, in contact with god, and city urban life with drugs.

The critic of television and pharmaceutical industry are not only the opposite with natural, but like how the generations of Harry and Sara are separate and distants. The generations of parentes and sons, youngs and adults, are distants in modern society. The only thing that unite each other is the consume of drugs and medicines. Harry don't visit him mother (there are a little scenes when the both are in same place), Marion has problems with her parents and Tyrone has erased memories about her mother. In Requiem For a Dream, the young people are not anymore the revolucionary figure of society, who don't like the valuers of their parents, their grampas or the own society, but only a solitary figure with the same problems and same alienation of the olders.

The individue is alone in modern world. This is a fact about 2000 and 2010 years, but this is already reality in Aronofsky film in the start of the millenium, because, in the movie, the psicological pain of the characters is showed individuality. Harry, Sara, Marion and Tyrone are in differents places and differents situations, even the circunstances and motives are the same. The movie the individual pain in a ritmical form that is similiar if it has been show together, while a scary song is played. This effect, if don't has this factories, don't would be the same.

Human and time are parts of a same thing. The transition between summer, autumn and winter "walk" together with decadence of characters, with the idea the humans are vulnerable of external influence and time. The simbology of seasons like the cicle of life (a little semelhance with The Fountain, Aronofsky next movie) is about to hope because, before winter is come the spring, but the objective of movie is finish in winter to follow the dark side of the plot.

The american dream, that promised quality of life, good jobs and health to americans during 20th century, is showed in a niilist perspective of Darren Aronofsky. The promised paradise is now the bad strecture of poovery, like say by Sara when she was delirated with Tappy joking with the bad state of her house. The excellet health is now the consume of drugs to treat diseases like depression and anxiety, that are more commun very day. In the end, the american dream is only a dream.

Requiem for a dream is a masterclass in using every aspect of the medium to its best potential. The camera work, visual effects, cast, soundtrack all come together en force to stimulate the viewer and provoke emotional responses as we are walked along the sorrid tale as each of these people succumbs to their addiction. In many ways it could be viewed as a perfect film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is a drug? What is an addiction? A very accurate question that we never really analyzed in our thoughts before. When we hear addiction and drugs our mind navigates to illegal substances. Well, requiem for a dream is the sort of movie that proved us wrong. However, it wouldn’t be fair to label this movie as an antidrug movie because that is not the main purpose of the movie. We can see from the beginning that Harry, Marion and Tyrone are all drug addicts. On the other hand Sara is a middle aged woman that feels alone. She is constantly watching television and when she gets invited to television show. She thinks she found a purpose to lose weight. She starts a diet and we can see that she withdraws from her addiction sugar and food. She is constantly having visions of deserts and other meals. She is constantly consuming coffee. As the time passes by she decides to visit a doctor in order to use medication for a faster result. The pills resulted in her mental illness as we see that she is locked up in a mental institution at the end of the movie. Sara’s vision and obsession to be on television was the mounting base of her self-destruction. We can assume that she was addicted in a reason to exist. She trusts the doctor on taking the pills but the doctor is not really bothered with her conditions as he barely looks at her when she visits him. The doctor is just another drug dealer in uniform. If we take it one step ahead, we can say that Sara and her son Harry don’t have the best relationship. They fail to connect as mother and son. Combined together with all the other aspects is the reason that Sara went mad. In the end Sara’s dream becomes a nightmare. Moving on we can see from the beginning that Harry is struggling to find money and heroin. He steals his mother television in order to fulfil his addiction. He has a relationship with Marion which is also a drug user. Their relationship is going well at the time as they make plans for opening a clothing store together. Things don’t go so well for Harry and he ends up at a hospital losing both Marion and his arm. He was being reckless as he knew there was a possibility to loss both things but in his hierarchy substances came first. If we were to analyze their relationship we could conclude that like his mother Harry failed to connect his Marion. Their relationship is built on substances rather that true communication. In Harry’s hierarchy Marion comes second as he is prepared to sacrifice her in order to get his dose. Once again failure to connect plays a vital role in the self-destruction element. Tyrone has visions of his mother throughout the movie and he can conclude that all that his really wants is to make her proud. He is disappointed from what he has become but he is not willing to do anything to change that. He ends up in jail failing his mother. The last character, Marion ends up selling her own body for money and heroin, losing Harry. Each character in the movie has lost something valuable to them. Tyrone has lost his freedom, Harry has lost his arm, Marion has lost her soul and Sara has lost her mind. The main mistake that the character made is that they couldn’t understand that what they were truly lacking isn’t a quick a fix but a connection, a true connection either with their mother, partner or son. Their dreams were buried forever and will never be accomplished. They will only live in their heads. All the characters are responsible for their destruction and in winter dreams turned to nightmares. Expand

The first movie I watched that I considered a masterpiece, this is one of those powerful movies that might change your mind set or influence on you and the way you see the world.
This movie is about 3 different story lines that are connected to each other with 4 different characters, the protagonist his mother his girlfriend and his best friend and how all of them get influenced by drugs or should I say how all of them end up by their own sins / mistakes. The movie touches upon almost every known issue from racism, family conflicts, trust issues, extreme self confidence, neglecting the surroundings and more.
Beware as the movie is really hard to watch as it doesn't shy away from its ugliness.

I honestly didn't feel anything for anyone except Sara. They all deserved it. Sara however was a victim of "medical malpractice", if you could say that, so I empathize with her. Oof.

After bursting onto the scene with the bleak and unforgiving directorial debut that was "Pi," Darren Aronofsky followed it up by tapping into the bibliography of author Hubert Selby Jr. and crafting this cinematic equivalent of one basically saying "you ain't seen nothing yet." As far as cinematic sack taps go, "Requiem For A Dream" isn't necessarily the most severe. But, dear God, is it going to be a massive buzzkill to whatever the hell you had going on in your life. As a visual experience, it is simply exhausting, but it's not all for naught. Many critics cite Aronofsky's provocative filmmaking style to be a bit excessive, if not obvious or lacking in finesse. And though I might find this critique to be true in some cases (i.e. "mother!"), I think "Requiem For A Dream" might be that rare case where I couldn't see any other approach doing the story justice. This is a movie that hits that "best of both worlds" zone of provocateur filmmaking, where the product ultimately ends up being unnerving and difficult, yes, but also thought-provoking and called for. Do I ever want to see it again? Not really, no. But, man, did Ellen Burstyn ever deliver a career-defining performance, if I ever saw one.

WARNING! A masterpiece over here!

Personally, I have watched 'Requiem for a dream' three times, but the counting will carry on for sure. First in this movie, I must say, impress the directing, brilliantly combined with the topic - drugs, how they affect you and destroy your life. No chance, you miss that. Typical for the dramas, the accent is put on the details, the visual influence by facial impressions and sounds. Here, oh Lord.. Crazyyy directing. We could argue a lot about what's more important - good directing or good story and in the end we end up without conclusive answer, BUT some movies just impress you with that art of setting things in place. Second, Jared Leto in main role makes the movie even more touching. This man is god damn beautiful, talented and most of all there is something about him, that let him very very much impact you and drive you in the story. And that last thing represent supreme characterization of a masterpieces. The whole acting by every one of the actor crew could not be better. .

Shortly, perfect cinematography and soundtracks, story and acting, basically everything. A movie, that will touch you and make you shake.

Thanks to Aronofsky's direction that harmonized surreal visuals and sounds with the characters' feelings and experiences, I found myself experiencing and feeling what the characters experience and feel while watching the movie. Due to that, this is without a doubt one of the most disturbing and intoxicating movies I've ever watched. The problem is that the dramatic aspect in the movie actually harmed the movie; the dramatic scenes at the end of the first act slowed the pace of the movie down.
It's not the only or the major issue I've with this movie. The real issue is that the creative direction that elevated the stereotypical arc of Sara Goldfarb, wasn't enough to do this with the stereotypical arc of Harry and Marion. Also, the oscar-worthy performance by Ellen Burstyn (I really wanna know how she didn't win an oscar) and a few complications in her character, Sara Goldfarb's part was way better and more compelling than Harry and Marion's. I really didn't found myself relate to the characters of Harry and Marion so much, despite the great performances that Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly gave.
The perfect example that can affirm that the dramatic aspect wasn't the most powerful thing in the movie is the character of Tyrone; it's a very bland character and it was very hard for me to relate to its subplot, Marlon Wayans was very good though. I love Requiem for a Dream. It's a movie to experience not to watch. It really proves that Darren Aronofsky is a real talent that with his artistic direction can easily mess with your mind.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, it has a screenplay by Hubert Selby Jr. and the participation of Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly.

This is one of the most disturbing films I've seen. But this is not a defect. In fact, its the greatest quality of this film: it changes the way we think. Shocking and assertive, it shows how a person is able to dispose of their own luck, focusing on what he want and wasting the good things he already have. And the more disturbing becomes when we recognize, in the attitudes of the characters, our own attitudes or people we know. Decidedly, its a film that puts anyone thinking, it was made for this and not as entertainment.

The script is exceptional, the concept is innovative. The way the director drove all the work is very competent and was decisive for the final result. Speaking about final, the end of the film is disturbing and not recommended for sensitive people, as well as several other scenes. The actors performance is good, particularly Ellen Burstyn, who is unrecognizable in her role. The sets and costumes are regular. The photography is excellent, becoming darker and sinister as the characters go "down the pit". The soundtrack, by Clint Mansell, is one of the most powerful and disturbing in recent cinema, having been numerous times reused in various other artistic works, films, journalistic works etc.

Darren Aronofsky downward spiral tale of four drug addicted New Yorkers is far from uplifting film and is easily up there with Grave of the Fireflies as being one of the saddest films I’ve ever seen.

However, it’s also a great Greek tragedy-style psychological character study pursuing a hollow-version of the American Dream that isn’t afraid to show the ugly side of humanity.

Worth seeing for Ellen Burnstyn's stunningly transformative performance alone.

Darren Aronofsky pulls no punches as his characters descend the chasms of addiction. Requiem for a Dream is a profoundly bleak film. Watch with caution.

The affect that drug addiction can have on people's lives is not exactly an uncommon topic in movies but the brilliant camera work, music and performances all combine to make Requiem for a Dream something memorable.

Her son, Harry, is a drug dealer and an addict, along with his pal Tyrone, and his girlfriend Marion, whom wished that she could be a fashion designer.

Sara spends most of her time watching her favourite reality show on TV. One day, she gets selected to appear on that show. She wishes to go on with her special red dress but cannot fit in it due to her weight. She goes on a diet but doesn't seem to all work that well. Her next choice is diet pills, which wasn't a very good idea. Sara starts taking them irregularly and develops an addiction.

Harry, Tyrone and Marion on the other hand, struggle to keep up in the drug business and begin losing money and drugs.

As the film progresses, we see all of this get worse as their addictions spiral out of control.

Requiem for a Dream is really sickening and it breaks all expectations. It is absolutely fantastic but not one of those films you would feel comfortable watching twice (although I have watched it more than twice). Every actor in this film play their roles brilliantly, especially Ellen Burstyn. It's incredibly gut-wrenching. The story and writing by Darren Aronofsky is phenomenal. It's so well written it blows my mind. I easily give this movie a 10/10.

My main criticisms would be how some scenes are too drawn out, and I wish we hadn't followed all the characters all the way through this movie... Mostly because it's unnecessary... and there's no twist, it's very predictable, plot-wise it's bland, cliche, the characters are... On the other hand the acting and directing are almost impeccable and it succeeds in hitting you hard. The last 15 minutes of this movie are as intense as possible. Way to stress me out man. Expand

The film demonstrates us the consequence of drug, overuse of medicine, and prostitution for money. The filmmaking is original, the soundtrack is groundbreaking, performance was good, and there are some fine scenes composition. Yes, that's all great but I felt a little cold after the credits. I think it is because I've heard so many good things about it and I thought it would be more than just an anti-drug movie. Well, yeah, it was a good portrait of it, and I do have to admit it's a well-made film but I just wanted some more (for example the struggle of good and evil, etc). Perhaps it's just because of my expectation but I felt something was missing, I don't know, that's how I felt about this film. Nevertheless, this a must-see film. But unless you know someone that did drugs, we never really see what happens in between that before and after. Requiem for a Dream shows us what drugs do to people from four perspectives: The Girlfriend, the partner-in-crime, the over-user, and the innocent grandma- wait, what? Yeah, this movie proves that drugs not only ruin your life, but they also come in many places. You just have to know where. My favorite part about the movie is the fast-paced editing. It gets more and more intense as the movie goes on and really adds that freaky feeling about drugs. Also, I personally quite enjoy the snorricam in this. It just adds to the surreal feeling. Requiem for a Dream is god-damn masterpiece. A must see! Expand

Jared Leto shines as a heroin addict, Ellen Burnstyn was brilliant and perfect as a old aged drug addict, Clint Mansel was good, and Marlon Wayans was excellent as a ghetto addict. This whole movie is Aronofsky's fantasy on drug hallucinations and heroin's affect as death, but this gazing at dark filmmaking is marvellous. Not only does it paint the consequences of perhaps reaching too far, but Requiem for a Dream also tells a tragic tale of the troubles of being alone, and the lengths people may go to just to be counted.
Sara (Ellen Burstyn) is a widowed mother who spends her days watching the same game show, while also fantasising about being thinner and fitting into the red dress she wore to her son Harry's (Jared Leto) graduation, she decides to start a diet which eventually leads her to start taking prescription diet pills.
Harry, meanwhile, is a heroin addict, and soon gets himself into the trade around Coney Island, along with his friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) and his girlfriend, Marion (Jennifer Connolly). They make extreme amounts of money from their deals and dream of opening a fashion store.
As the two stories unfold, we watch as each of the four peoples addiction grows out of control and the effects to which their lives begin to spiral, the title truly bears fruit to the lengths these individuals go to for what they believe to be a better life.
Elllen Burstyn puts in an emotionally stirring performance as Sara, forever fantasising of her life in a gameshow, and her struggle to come to grips with reality are perfectly portrayed here, simply for the love of her son.
The multi-talented Jared Leto continues to shine, playing the conflicted Harry, who we never quite understand just how much he loves his mother, as when he is around her he seems uneasy. his characters relationship with is also addicted girlfriend starts off quite simple, but we soon realise that he will do anything he can to please her, whatever his actions.
Darren Aronofsky's superb filmmaking comes in with a bang in this film, combining close up shots with a montage of quick cuts to emphasise the speed and evolved nature of each persons addiction, and he tells a wonderful story as how the ambitions can indeed be dangerous, many things that people reach for could have tragic consequences, but unfortunately an idea can spread.
Combining expert filmmaking and a gripping story, along with a superb cast, Aronofsky has created a truly breathtaking yet tragic film, one that will not be forgotten, simply because of its meaningful story and heartbreaking finale.

The filmRequiem for a Dream has impact for the most part due to the utterly captivating performances of the cast, particularly Ellen Burstyn who received a well-earned Academy Award nomination, and from Jared Leto who is also very strong. The film also has simple but effectively disturbing visuals, a striking editing style courtesy of Jay Rabinowitz, a moody and epic score from Clint Mansell and a truly terrifying and heartbreaking finale. Being a Darren Aronofsky film, it's flexible and creative with the concept of reality, and becomes more off-the-wall and dreamlike (well, nightmarish) as the characters steadily lose control of their lives, their minds and their free will as a result of their terrible addictions. It's certainly one of the most uncompromising and provocative films about drug addiction ever made, and should probably be mandatory viewing for teenagers to scare them off the life-destroying substances for life. It one of those films that really leaves a lasting effect, an almost crippling feeling of melancholia as a result of its pessimism. Mercilessly downbeat though it may be, Requiem for a Dream is a prime example of meticulously crafted, undeniably powerful filmmaking. Expand

The film talks about family conflicts, couple problems, friend disagreements, racist fights, poor environments and all of these immersed in the drugs world. Obviously the points of view towards these problems are four, the one of Harry (who is trying to be successful and have a job), his girlfriend (who is looking her happily ever after), his mother (who wants to be remembered after her dead, by appear on television) and his best friend (who is hoping to live without worries and just enjoying the moment). In another way, this people is trying to accomplish something that is very difficult to find in the real world, so the solution is to escape from the reality; here is when the four path joins in a common point: the drugs, which represent the release of their minds. In this part Darren Aronofsky use the expressionist and surrealistic images, like the sequence when they take drugs, the attack of the TV people with the refrigerator and the zombie ending. Finally the four people end in the same way as if they were only one body. All of this is enhance by a marvelous direction, astonishing performances, excellent script and shocking music. This is a requiem for the beloved housewife, the worker son, the empathic girlfriend and the supporting friend. It is a requiem for achieving perfection. A Requiem for a Dream. Expand

I agree that it is a little over rated and people think they're artsy for liking it and even knowing about it, but any movie that could take the place of every single life education class we ever had to take growing up in school about how drugs are bad is a success in my book. Very powerful. Jared Leto delivers, Jennifer Connolly kills it, Marlon Wayans shows diversity, and Ellen Burstyn steals the whole show. True acting from true actors. Expand

All of which become the victims of a gruesomely slippery slope of drug addiction. However, this film fails at creating unique and original characters with even the slightest amount of depth. And the half-assed love story between Harry and Marion gives no insight into why they fell in love other then them both being attractive. Many people praise its innovative cinematography and "realistic" view of the results of drug abuse. But along with its purposefully disturbing scare tactics, it's about as compelling and a D.A.R.E poster. And unfortunately the cinematography isn't enough to salvage this colossal piece of trash. Expand

Aronofsky's psychodelic drug addiction film proves him an effective hallucinatory filmmaker and a master at clever stylistic metaphors with pin-point hellish accuracy.

Not to sound pompous but if i was from a sheltered middle class suburban upbringing I'd probably find some othe sens painfully graphic, but having done my time in the ghettos (plural) I've seen way worse. The directing was the most entertaining aspect. The story, well, even if I hadn't experienced some of it in person I'd have read about it countless times before seeing this simply because I'm middle aged. So I guess you might also have to be kind of young to be shocked as well. It's well crafted and if you feel like you 'should' see it so you understand the current pop culture references, then do so. It's not a waste of time. If you want to see the real thing though, check out 'Dope Sick Love'. It's a mind blowing doc that's readily available for free online. Just google it. It makes this film seem like 'Dora the Explorer'. Expand

His use of numerous film-making devices from close up action shots of everything from the dilation of a pupil to the sipping of a cup of coffee, sound effects that enhance the action, side by side panoramic shots, high speed action shots, and many other techniques all come together to truly allow the viewer to feel what the character feels, to experience his or her inebriation end ultimately despair as desire and withdrawal come into play in the latter half of the film. At times such stylistic directing doesn't allow for character growth, but nonetheless when the characters are able to grow, they do so beyond measure. From simply desire of the drug and love for one another, they move to dependence and we see that become their only focus. Then Afronsky shows us the deepest dark of addiction. From simple withdrawal to prison to prostitution to hospitalization and even to an amputation, the characters end in far different places and circumstances. But nonetheless, in the end, all the characters face the same loneliness, the loneliness that comes when one has sacrificed all else for the drug that gives him nothing. This film takes different circumstances and ultimately brings them together in the most tragic of ways. While not a perfect film, Afronsky proves that he is a director not to be reckoned with. Expand

This piece of work brings it. It really does. This excellent movie was one of the best movies I've ever seen in a lot of terms (soundtrack, editing, originality, and so on...)

BUT you have to be very carefull while whatching it. It brings with itself a stereotic abordation of the drugs senary. That's a beautiful way of spending quality time but, at the same time, doesn't deliver enough information for any person to create an opinion about the drugs and abuse subjects.

I find addicted people disgusting, as simple as that. I find it evenly disgusting how deep certain humans can sink. We must be the only species without a clear genetically determined spectrum of behaviour. I have seen people who live in dirt, who smell, who dump their waste on the street, who destroy themselves with alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, food, or whatever poison they can find. No animal does that. Animals spend most of the day cleaning themselves, because they instinctively know that their body is pretty much their most important asset.
With regard to this movie, what is the purpose of making it ? Drugs are dangerous ? Thanks, by now everybody should know that.
The only thing tha bothers me is that apparently a lot of people can actually relate to that movie. That spells trouble for humanity...

If a person has never used hard drugs or been involved with people using hard drugs I can see how they might praise this as an unflinching look at the realities of addiction. In actuality the consequences of drug use can be much worse, but not as gruesome or as idiotic as this film portrays them. Expand
