Rango belongs more to the western than it does to the animated feature. It deserves comparisons to Sergio Leone before anything Pixar has done since 2010.

I really liked Rango. The Animation was on another level, very detailed und beautiful to look at. The overall plot was nothing too outrageous but still very entertaining. The humor really made it for me!

I heard from a number of people that this was excellent so I went to see it myself being a fan of animated movies and of film in general. And I absolutely loved it, other than being a little too long, which is such a minor complaint, it was aI heard from a number of people that this was excellent so I went to see it myself being a fan of animated movies and of film in general. And I absolutely loved it, other than being a little too long, which is such a minor complaint, it was a wonderful film with some surprisingly mature themes and does very well at trying something different.

The animation for starters is outstanding. Not only do the characters move convincingly, but the colours look gorgeous and the backgrounds are imaginative and stunning. The soundtrack is another plus, the score is wonderful with a sense of fun, great use of instruments and nods to Ennio Morricone, without being too generic or over-the-top with some inspired musical flavour to it.

The script is funny, smart and quirky as well- loved the Chinatown(Ned Beatty based his performance on that of John Huston's), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Star Wars references- the characters are genuine and likable with heart and don't fall into the trap of being too cliché(there are some but it works in the film's favour and I loved the title character), the film goes at a great pace while remaining wholly satisfying at its end with an almost elegiac quality that is there with almost all the best westerns, the slapstick action bounces along nicely and the story is far from formulaic instead it is original and inventive. The voice acting is wonderful, both Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy- Rattlesnake Jake is awesome!- give knockout performances, while Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton and Abigail Breslin are equally terrific.

In conclusion, a wonderful film that I wasn't expecting to be this good this early on in the year. On a side note, for those complaining about suitability for children, I actually wouldn't say this was a film for kids but more adult-oriented. 9/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

It has a very wild west feel to it, given the area Rango ends up in, with him being regarded as very much an outsider. Its quite a bright and vivid film, with plenty of different characters to interest older kids, although I'd warn that perhaps some of the characters may seem slightly scary to very young children (animals with long, sharp talons and/or bright red eyes etc.). The CGI is quite impressive - I remember when I first saw Toy Story in the 90s and thinking how good that was and this has been made around 15 years after that came out. Ok I wouldn't claim that I'd have had no idea it wasn't a real life set but then thats mostly (although not entirely) due to the quirky plot but it did look really quite realistic to me. I liked the voices of the characters - the 'rootin', tootin' locals', some Owls who appear to be a Mexican Mariachi band and so on (I realise how stereoytyped it is but I suppose thats to be expected in kids films(?)). I felt that the voices really added an extra sort of a spark to the characters. Cast wise, Johnny Depp voices Rango himself, while Isla Fisher voices a local female character called Beans, Abigail Breslin voices another called Priscilla and other big names include Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton and Ray Winstone. I felt that Rango came across as a character easy for the viewer to like and care about, being a happy-go-lucky curious and brave individual.

Thematically speaking, Rango is about community, fitting in and identity. Content wise, as I say it may be somewhat unsettling for very young children, given there are scenes with angry characters, there are guns shown and some locals which are scared due to their fears for the town but I'd imagine most kids maybe 8 or 9 or older should be fine with it, at a guess. There's obviously no strong language or other explicit content.

There is a comedic element to this film - I'd definitely say the term quirky and perhaps wacky applies. Its a good bit of fun - I found it amusing recognising some of the voice actors and seeing how the plot played out. I don't often watch kids/family films but I did enjoy this. Finally, here is one quick quote of an amusing piece of dialoge (moreso for adults than kids I'd imagine) "thespians? aren't they illegal in 7 states?!" (I presume the character mistook thespians for lesbians(?!). Yes I'd recommend this film, as its quite quirky, funny in parts and has good CGI and voice acting from a good cast. If your looking for a film you can watch with slightly older kids (maybe 8 or 9 or older) then I'd say this is worth a look at - that is if you haven't already seen it numerous times, of course!.… Expand

This movie is a masterpiece of a film. The plot is well-paced, fun, and intriguing. The cinematography is amazing, and the animation is stellar. The cinematography is amazing, and the animation is stellar. While most animated movies strive to have symmetrical characters, Rango is greatly benefitted from its characters' imperfections. For example, Waffles' (The lizard's) right horn is broken, and some of his teeth are missing. That single design is not only creative, but it can fit a lot of backstory behind it, and I love that. The plot taking a look at political corruption and tyranny is a great decision, and the voice acting is superb. The writers weren't afraid to make adult jokes and references with their audience. It was a perfect choice. TL;DR: Animation is amazing, jokes are hilarious. Rango isn't a story about redemption. It's a story about discovering self-identity.… Expand

- How did the armadillo survive a car crash?
- Why did he predicted this strange useless prophecy?
- Why does Beans freeze all the time? (Please don't answer 'it's a defense mechanism')
- Why don't we see her famous ranch?
- Why don't we hear more about her father's supposed death by alcohol?
- How could a whole town trust a stranger without any single proof?
- Why would such a town make that guy its sheriff?
- Why does the maire want to build a city consuming all the water he also needs?
- How come the maire can make the most dangerous bandito of the West work for his own account without using pressure?
- How come the famous Spirit of the West is so lame?
- How can a bullet thrown from the mouth break a glass jar?
So many questions that will remain without any decent answer.

This is truly not a movie for children. Plot only moves forward by quick successions of unpredictable events. Pace is awful: things happens so fast and then nothing happens for 30 to 40 minutes of the movie. It is really hard to have some empathy to other characters than Rango. Villagers all have disgustiung and/or alcoholic faces.
The only goods points of the movie is the identity quest (which appears and disappears without explanation) and the fact that water is hijacked for a splendid town in the middle of nowhere. These are the only two honorable points that make me think further than what the movie actually proposes.… Expand

A true love letter to spaghetti westerns (a certain man with no name makes a cameo), it captures the essense of the genre while also doing its own unique thing.

Sergio Leone would be proud.

Wow!Literally every aspect of this movie is mind-blowing!The animation at its best,the music of Hans zimmer,the cinematography of Roger-deakins,the comic touch of Johnny Depp with Awesome story similar to mad-max concept and upon that the chills western feel with Brilliant References and Homages to Classics and the double meaning adult jokes aside the overall Movie is literally a Damn Masterpiece!the starting intro to character and his unusual comedy with sudden turn of events and exploded screen full of references from start it was amazing,the village chase scene at start was mind-blowing and then the village entrance and from then the whole story it was entertaining as hell,the 1 bullet 7 kills thing with awesome bird hunt by Rango then becoming the sheriff Rango his journey was awesome,the whole water side thing is predictable but the series of events in movie is amazingly showcased it was engaging to watch till end,the snakes entry at last was quite surprising,the whole movie until that awesome bank heist was funny and awesome.From the investigating of Heist it really became the EPIC movie literally the desert fight was Brilliant,the music owls were funny all the time and upon that the Heart-touching villagers story was emotionally amazing,the western fights were skeptical and the little predictable twist of Rango's identity the scene of him questioning himself it was heart-breaking and awesome scene then the white spirit of West entrance with Oscars was unique as hell,then the ending with awesome pay-off the fight and water every where it was awesome ending and after that the Pulp-fiction theme at credits was cherry on top.Its literally an Awesomely brilliantly entertaining Movie its A Masterpiece!… Expand

I'm so much keen to watch those kinds of animations and for sure Rango will be on the list of the best. That was a kind of flowery fragrance of the setting and betting up a brilliant portrayal of a cowboy like a theme. Rango must be one of the best looking CGI animated movies even til this day. It looks like a movie that was ahead of its time with its amazing photorrealistic visuals. It's wonderfully written, it's funny, it has a wonderful score, the voice acting is great and might be one of the best roles Jhonny Depp has had in recent memory and for an animated movie it gets dark at times. This is not a kids movie, or at least not one that searches to appeal to them as it has guns, alcohol, murder, don't get me wrong, I praise the movie for being a PG rated movie that has all those things, not too common in an animated movie with that rating. My only issue with the movie is the story, the theme of finding who you really are could've been developed better, and many characters serve more as plot devices, rather than actual characters.

Despite those issues this is a great movie and easily one of the best animated movies of the 2010s, it truly deserved its Oscar.… Expand

Artistically stunning. Ever since Toy Story introduced us to the joy of computer animation, there has been an almost ubiquitous consensus on the principles of style. This strikes me as the greatest and strangest disappointment of the genre.Artistically stunning. Ever since Toy Story introduced us to the joy of computer animation, there has been an almost ubiquitous consensus on the principles of style. This strikes me as the greatest and strangest disappointment of the genre. Rango shatters that, with a visual style which is completely unique -- more mature, experimental, and honestly just plain superior to everything that came before. It stands out on both a technical level, with its sophisticated cinematography, and on a creative level, with a wealth of memorable visual motifs -- and above all, an incredible menagerie of weird and wonderful character designs. The analogy that came to mind whilst watching the film was that it was like seeing a Miyazaki film in three dimensions.
These characters are acted superbly, and the dialogue sparkles with wit, weirdness and an unashamed erudition.
The one shortcoming is the plot, which doesn't really hold anything of novelty or surprise, but serves a mostly functional role of supporting the set pieces and the film's wonderful world in general.
Overall I was impressed and entertained all the way through this film, and I hope it encourages other artists in the medium to be a little more daring.… Expand

L'humour prout-prout tente de faire rire le jeune public et quelques allusions se risquent à quelques clins d'oeil vers les adultes mais tout cela n'aboutit qu'à un pétard mouillé. Ce western bêbête anthropomorphisé à outrance nous fait bien trop souvent lever les yeux au plafond, la paume en éventail au dessus du front, non pas pour se protéger du soleil mais de la crasse et atterrante stupidité mêlée de prétention goguenarde (ce qui est encore pire...).

Les gosses pour leur part s'endormiront bien vite, passé le premier petit quart d'heure, tant le film avance à une allure de tortue asthmatique... on en voit pas le bout du début de la fin... Si l'image de synthèse est belle (techniquement s'entend), elle se révèle de fort mauvais goût avec toutes ces tronches de rats du désert, décidément peu ragoûtantes, pour ne pas dire dégoûtantes.

Ni fait, ni à faire, Rango est bon pour un aller simple vers le vide-ordures.… Expand

There's a reason this won the Best Animated Feature Oscar! Not only does it work as a darn good animated movie, it works as a darn good western movie. Gore Verbinski's vision is projected clean and crystal clear that easily connects and communicates with the audience through excellent execution skills. Johnny Depp is perfectly fit for the role; as it resembles too much with Jack Sparrow and is supported with a great cast like Isla Fischer and Bill Nighty. Rango is a typical western feature that is seasoned by some new spices and flows with genuine emotion which keeps it upbeat despite of its predictable script and seen-this-seen-that conflicts.… Expand

Overall I enjoyed it, but it’s not very memorable. The animation was very good, it was realistic too. The voice acting was good also. I thought the story needed work, it was a little predictable, but it was mostly fun to watch. I reccomend it.

I would say that the film is not for everyone (it's a bit more "arthouse" than most animated fare, and small children might be a bit scared of it), but all in all, "Rango" is a tremendous film that most film-lovers should watch.… Expand

Feature animation currently finds itself in a golden age of mediocrity, with sensationally inventive technical means tethered, more often than not, to drab and cynical imaginative ends. The perennial Pixar exception tends to prove a dreary rule: as animated movies claim an ever bigger share of money and attention — drawing cross-generational, demographically diverse audiences more readily than most other films — they rely more and more on manic, synthetic formulas.

And so, a half-dozen times a year, parents and children line up for overscaled, noisy genre pastiches crammed with yammering movie-star voice work, eye-straining action sequences and tacked-on sermons about the importance of being yourself, following your dream or sticking by your friends and family. Even at their best (again noting the Pixar exception), these movies are like theme-park rides and other big-ticket corporate amusements — thrilling while they last and then quickly forgotten.

All of the above should apply to “Rango,” a tongue-in-cheek western (a lizard’s tongue, at that) directed by Gore Verbinski, who is best known for helping to turn a theme-park ride (Disney World’s “Pirates of the Caribbean”) into a dizzyingly successful movie franchise. But the odd thing about “Rango” is that unlike so many of its peers, it is odd. In spite of a profile that should place it alongside “Megamind” and “Despicable Me” and the long list of other overblown, have-fun-or-else cartoons, this rambling, anarchic tale is gratifyingly fresh and eccentric. Much of the time you don’t quite know where it is going, which is high praise indeed given the slick predictability that governs most other entertainments of its kind.

Perhaps this should not be too surprising, since Mr. Verbinski, especially in the first installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, showed a distinctive visual style and a genuinely off-beat sensibility. He was helped immeasurably, in all of the “Pirates” pictures, by the decorative whimsy of Mark McCreery (the production designer here) and by the uninhibited goofiness of Johnny Depp, who turned Jack Sparrow into a new pop-culture archetype. Both Mr. McCreery and Mr. Depp are crucial to the look and rhythm of “Rango,” keeping it vigorously strange almost until the end, when the movie decides to go for the safe, commercial action-extravaganza wrap-up.

But the craziness of the journey makes that familiar destination worth it. We first encounter Mr. Depp’s character, a domesticated lizard with a Hawaiian shirt and an active imagination, in the terrarium tank he shares with a broken doll torso and a wind-up plastic fish. This minimal world is a stage for him, and he struts about on it like a scaly provincial trouper, acting out dramatic scenarios and scenes from Shakespeare to dispel the boredom of benign captivity. The blank, abstract space this creature inhabits calls our attention to the fanciful nature of the movie itself, as it begins to conjure an antic, improbable world out of nothing.

Or, rather, out of images and ideas that have been floating around in the collective dream life for as long as most of us can remember. Mr. Verbinski and his colleagues (John Logan wrote the script, and James Ward Byrkit shares story credit) rummage through a grab bag of allusions and homages, many of which seem inspired more by genuine fandom than by the impulse to be clever. There is an early, blink-and-you-miss-it nod to the memory of Hunter S. Thompson, who is a personal touchstone for Mr. Depp and is also connected to the iconography of the West that “Rango” sets out to explore. That includes not only the expected tumbleweeds and cactuses and dusty rock formations, but also a hallucinatory desert tradition encompassing Carlos Castaneda and Wile E. Coyote.

Prodded on his quest by a visionary armadillo (voiced by Alfred Molina) and accompanied by the corridos of a quartet of fatalistic singing owls, our reptilian hero drags himself to the desolate town of Dirt, a bleak, bone-dry place that is nonetheless swimming in cinematic associations. The voice cast, including Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, and Timothy Olyphant, is splendid and really knocks the ball out of the park. Also, in a break from Hollywood's incessant race to surcharge parents to death by releasing anything bearing the "family film" moniker in 3-D, Rango is available in 2-D and only in 2-D. Watching this movie unfold may remind viewers why 2-D is not an inferior format. The image pops with clarity and color. It's bright and vivid. And it's a lot easier to lose oneself in the world crafted by the filmmakers without the unwelcome and unnecessary accessory of a pair of cheap plastic glasses. Rango is the poster child for those who are anti-3-D, and a great reminder that genuine creativity doesn't need a gimmicky crutch to appeal to audiences.

Rango is a celebration of the Western. It's a comedy but, like Blazing Saddles (although without the R-rated edge), it exposes a deep, abiding love for and knowledge of the genre. Working in concert, director Gore Verbinski, screenwriter John Logan, and composer Hans Zimmer have developed a tapestry that's stitched together using references to every great movie to come along during the Western's heyday. The dialogue incorporates lines (or variations thereof) from the past. Shot selection mimics classic moments. The music utilizes recognizable cues and, at times, imitates entire themes. All of the Western motifs and clichés are employed, from the showdown at high noon to the lonely tumbleweed being hurried along by a dusty wind. One of the villains, the ominous Rattlesnake Jake, bears more than a passing resemblance to Western Legend Lee Van Cleef. And The Man With No Name makes a cameo (with Timothy Olyphant doing a passable Clint Eastwood imitation).

Although Rango's primary marching orders pertain to Westerns, the film occasionally branches out to reference other famous moments. One high octane scene begins with bats replacing gunships to the tune of "Ride of the Valkyries" before transforming into a Western version of an ILM touchstone: the Death Star trench battle from Star Wars. For older viewers, Rango offers dozens of "spot the reference" instances to go along with a screenplay that's characterized by a depth and intelligence one rarely finds in non-Pixar animated fare. For younger viewers, there are plenty of dizzying action sequences peppering a fast-moving, energetic story.

The voice acting is top-notch, with Johnny Depp taking top billing as the occasionally wisecracking Rango. Like Mike Meyers, Depp has a chameleon-like voice and is not easily recognizable without his Captain Jack accent. Support comes from an eclectic group that includes Isla Fisher (as Rango's tart-tongued love interest, Beans), Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Ray Winstone, Ned Beatty, and Bill Nighy as Rattlesnake Jake. Rango's adventures are related by a Greek chorus of sorts. Dressed in sombreros, they play appropriate music and wonder out loud how long it will be until Rango dies.

The screenplay is pitched at a more sophisticated level than is the norm for a non-Pixar animated film. The plot is more complex, there are multiple villains, and there are existential moments (although nothing as extreme as what viewers experienced the last time Verbinski and Depp collaborated: Pirates of the Caribbean 3). While much of that will go over the head of the average child, there's plenty of whiplash-inducing action, with two standout sequences: Mr. Rango's Wild Ride and the bat attack. The only "missing" kid-friendly element is the ubiquitous animated song, and it isn't missed.

It's tempting to argue that Rango is a richer experience for adults than for children because there's so much more in the film for viewers with significant cinematic experience. Nevertheless, the movie has been assembled with a wide audience in view and at no time is it exclusionary of any demographic. In fact, the humor is so broadly accessible that five-year olds and eighty-year olds will often laugh at the same jokes. In terms of quality, Rango is the kind of movie one expects to see during the high profile summer or year-end seasons. It's to the benefit of movie-goers that it rides into multiplexes during one of the most barren stretches in recent memory. The story is about ending a drought, and that's precisely what Rango accomplishes.… Expand

The setting of of the film is first and foremost, a Western, it delivers subtle but also not so subtle nods to the genre that defined an era, even if you haven’t seen the many films it borrows its content from, there is still enough to like about it, especially Rango himself. Johnny Depp lends his voice to the character, a run of the mill lizard, but his journey to an unknown location is disrupted after a roadkill, so he ends up deceiving his way into a local town called Dirt, which is running dangerously low on water supply while also being held under fear from the various villainous creatures of the town. As the film progresses, its clear to see the linear it follows, much the same as a Western, it has the stranger who isn’t part of the town, he breaks social order by confronting the rulers of the town, while he also has the chance to become honest. Rango tries his best to pull the wool over the eyes of the citizens, but birds, snakes and other unsavoury creatures make this quite difficult. Each character has been excellently brought to life through their voice actor, and through their relevant roles on screen, Bill Nighy and Ray Winstone are the ideal villainous cretins who terrorise the town, so Ned Beatty’s mayor decides that Rango should wear the Sheriff’s badge. The witty and smartly-drawn humour of the film is brilliant, it’s sort of a grown-up animation that has a variety of deadpan humour. Director Gore Verbinski shows his skills when commanding the great action sequences, there is a delightful chase sequence in the many canyons of the wild west that sums up the brilliance of the whole film, fast-talking, fast-paced and full of characters who could easily belong in a real film, they have limitless amounts of energy while the film has limitless amounts of opportunities to parody classical films such as Apocalypse Now and the endless amount of Westerns, it even use the talents of Timothy Olyphant to nod in the direction of the “Man With No Name”. This is a surprising and uplifting comedy that is colourful, breathtaking to look at and definitely raises the bar for a first rate story along with some excellent involvement of Hollywood stars, they bring the added flavour to the characters involved as Rango tries to figure out the water problem. Beauty and first-rate entertainment at its finest.… Expand

Rango seems to have divided opinions a lot. I don't think kids would enjoy it much, as the humor is dry and so is the setting. People may not be able to relate to the protagonist but there are other great movies and TV shows where the main character may come across as pretentious and annoying, but only confident artists would take such risks. I would always appreciate the avoidance of cliches of likable heroes, as the world is not made that way. But having said that, this is an animated movie and perhaps it should have done something to make it more accessible by children. Or maybe the time has come to deal with serious matters in animated films that should be targeted at grown ups. Rango had excellent visuals and script. The plot and the characters were all engaging. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't understand why people say their kids didn't like this, (they just simply didn't understand the movie) but it is a great movie. It's not full-blown comedy, it's a mix of comedy, westerns, action/adventure, and, even some drama. I was thirteen, I believe, when this movie was released. I admit, I wasn't very interested in it, but my younger cousin rented it and asked me to watch it with him. He's only nine, and he really liked it, (maybe because I introduced him to "non-little kid" movies when he was younger." I ended up buying the movie. I was very impressed, the presentation, the blending of how the characters interact, and the story. Rango is a story about a pet chameleon, no, not lizard, who is stranded in the desert after a car near-accident. Within minutes, he meets an armadillo, who was the cause of the incident. He tells Rango about a town with water where he can go to survive. So, Rango sets off across the desert to find the town, Dirt. Along the way, he encounters a hawk, who attacks Rango until he manages to escape. Rango finds a drainage tube and spends the night. When he awakes from water suddenly pours out, with Rango "swimming" in it, he meets Beans, a "western" female armadillo who agrees to take Rango to Dirt on her wagon. Upon his arrival, Rango walks into a saloon for water, however, he finds that water is a very rare thing in Dirt and the lack of water is forcing the citizens to sell their land and move away from the town. When asked his name, the chameleon gives us the towns folk the false name Rango, who they believe is responsible for killing the Jenkins' brothers (7) with just one bullet. Soon, the citizens and Rango bond and tell stories, just when outlaws Bad Bill and his gang arrive. When Rango inadvertently embarrasses Bill, he is challenged to a duel. Just before they shoot, the hawk returns behind Rango, scaring away the outlaws. It then proceeds to chase Rango through the town, at which point Rango hides in a vending machine and uses candy to climb out. However, the candy is still wrapped around Rango's waist and the hawk catches him just as he grabs hold of the empty water tower base. Rango points the gun, but then decides to split the candy with a bullet. The bullet accidentally snaps a rope and the tower falls on the hawk, killing it. The towns people proceed to look over the hawk, realizing only one bullet was used. Rango then meets the town mayor, an old turtle. The mayor knows Rango isn't what he appears to be, but to keep the citizens' mind off of the lack of water, the mayor makes Rango the sheriff. Soon enough, Rango becomes entangled in his own deception. When the mayor appears to be behind the mysterious water disappearance, Rango and his group of rag-tag citizens set off to uncover the mystery.

The Confusing; There is some language that seems more orientated towards older audiences, such as a few mild swear words. And for a movie that was supposed to be directed towards children, perhaps not suitable. But, to older viewers, the dialogue is a refreshing bit instead of "Ah Crud," or "Heck!"… Expand

And how the little guys are just as important as the big leaders.

Another note worthy achievement is in the animation. The textures are so real and the movement is so fluid especially with the villain, a giant rattle snake. It goes for photo realism and achieves in creating realistic looking creatures. However, certain characters fall into the uncanny valley. Characters tend to look unappealing and quite disturbing. The musical score is also good. It captures the western vibe.

The movie has a lot going for it, except the humor. The humor to me feels forced and it tries too hard. It becomes pandering and quite ridiculous. The film and characters try really hard to be funny and weird for the sake of some cheap laughs. The movie also takes a while to start up and I mean a while. The movie doesnâ… Expand

I loved this movie. It is really interesting and well written and goes into the problem of teenagers and how it is difficult for them to find out who they really are and where they fit in this world. Your child, whether you like it or not, is probably constantly exposed to "foul " words like hell and damn at their school. It is not that big of a deal. If your that sensitive with your kids then do some research on the film you take them to watch… Expand

ts...Very...Weird, But in a good way, Depp did a fantastic job as Rango, along with Bill Nighy as the snake, and Ned Beatty as the mayor, Though my only problem is that, well one its very weird and by weird i mean, weird like its neverts...Very...Weird, But in a good way, Depp did a fantastic job as Rango, along with Bill Nighy as the snake, and Ned Beatty as the mayor, Though my only problem is that, well one its very weird and by weird i mean, weird like its never mentioned again, like the tunnel in willy wonka, And there is al ot of stuff that could be skipped over and it wouldnt have made a difference on the plot, Half the animals i couldn't tell what they were. But the movie was just decent overall, its at least worth seeing once but its a movie that you have to make your mind up for yourself, the weirdest part however is when Clint Eastwood (known as the spirit of the west) Appears in a vision or something to rango. Its a very strange movie and is definetly not for kids, There are several sexual references, And 9 uses of hell and one point the snake says "Sign the Damn Paper!!!!" But it pays homage to some of the old western movies with a funny little reference to "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" Which is also funny knowing how Depp was also in that movie. All in all a fairly decent movie with some good action, plot, and some good comedy… Expand

Having a young daughter means I often get pushed into watching family movies, most of which bore me **** but RANGO is an exceptional movie, the stark contrast of city slicker pet vs wild desert critters in a western themed story is brilliant.

Movie makes up for a few story faults by the gorgeous animation and quirkiness. My 6 & 9 year olds kind of liked it and I kind of liked it so that is good enough for a 7.

For graphics, I give this movie a solid 10. Everything was crisp, bright, and highly detailed. The overall movie gets only a 7 because I felt that it was too busy paying homage to old Westerns rather than developing its own thing. The coreFor graphics, I give this movie a solid 10. i think that this movie is absolutely awesome, i really like cartoons and the new ones like rio, how to train your dragon, cars 2 and this are work of a genius! johnny depp was amazing, as always, and rango is the coolest lizard i have ever watched!

This is not a movie i would have payed money to see in theaters.But when i ended up watching it with my nephew , i was sucked in by the childish antics swirled together with serious issues.I was surprised that a movie with Johnny Depp as a cartoon lizard ; would address such issues as political corruption , resource manipulation , and political assassination.That coupled with a very monkish armadillo , had my interests peeked and i had to watch it till the end.The only thing i had trouble with was the villainous turtle .But as the story unfolded , the depth of his evil became very apparent.If your looking for a movie to watch with a young one , i highly suggest it !… Expand

I must admit, I didn't know what to make of Rango five minutes in. The story does take a while to get going, and even longer to engage you. But when it does, you're in for a real treat, especially for film buffs. The bulk of the plot is aI must admit, I didn't know what to make of Rango five minutes in. The story does take a while to get going, and even longer to engage you. But when it does, you're in for a real treat, especially for film buffs. The bulk of the plot is a loving homage to Chinatown, but there are numerous other film references throughout, particularly, and understandably, to classic westerns. The film looks great, filling a wild-west frontier town with hyper-real anthropomorphic animals, and giving your eyes a feast in extremely creative action set-pieces. The voice acting is top-notch, particularly Johnny Depp who makes Rango a classic good-natured lovable loser, Ned Beatty who tips his hat to John Huston as the town of Dirt's devious mayor and Bill Nighy who channels the venomous spirit of Jack Palance's bounty hunter character in Shane. Gore Verbinski is back on form, having made a clever, quirky, funny, character driven film more akin to the first Pirates of the Caribbean than their overblown and hectic sequels. The ending of the film is a little sudden and unsatisfying (though, happily it does contain the classic "riding into the sunset" shot) and the eco message is crow-barred in, but there is plenty in this rich, intelligent and humorous animation to satisfy.… Expand

I never heard of this movie until i went to see it in the cinema on the kids club a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed it and my 7 and 8 year old did too. Its fun, silly and sometimes serious in places but this is the best animal crossover modern western movie ever put to film. Its not suprising that this is up for oscars next year. Very very good film, Johnny Depp is amazing as Rango and his supporting cast are fantasic too. Highly recommend to see this film and own it on DVD, I hope they make another style of movie like this. In a sense there was not a single original scene but I think that was the point. Check out the snowman in the snow globe, fear and loathing in Las Vegas, every Western ever made but especially high noon and all the Clint Eastwood pics. The clock looks like it was out of dark city. How about the Lord of the rings and the mines of Morea. Star Wars, Mad Max and above all Chinatown. I am sure somebody who really knows movies could find a few more. (I say the snake looks like Clint Eastwood not to mention Clint Eastwood looking like Clint Eastwood.)… Expand

The movie was Surprisingly, good!

- Excellent visuals
- Enjoyable characters
- Funny!

It started out, what the heck did you buy this for? I then started hearing all kinds of different lines from all the old westerns from the 70's and 80's and then realized my wife did right. I found this website to try and determine WHY I was so BORED with essentially a very colourful, beautifully rendered film. Thankfully I found many reviewers shared my CONCERNS. Many reviewers her have given this tedious and uninspiring film high scores. To me it's a bit like saying," Dad has a new car. It is visually stunning and beautifully realised. However it has no interior/engine/gearbox etc and can never be driven." The characters are dull. The story is even duller. As someone else here has articulately pointed out; there are themes here and language used that are inappropriate for children's entertainment. "Rango" and "Entertainment" should never appear in the same sentence. There is an insidious move in the film industry to push adult themes further and further down the age-ladder. I for one am bored senseless with the pretentious notion of films like this "Paying homage to.....blah blah." If you have a serious problem with INSOMNIA then I highly recommend purchasing this as a bluray DVD....You will be fast asleep in 10 minutes. To conclude: A colour rich, well-rendered film for adults who enjoy juvenile entertainment that masquerades as a children's film.… Expand

After watching this movie I felt compelled to write a review. Also, there is only so much that you can play with scale before you start to lose all grip on any form of stability with the characters. With such a realistic visual quality, I just don't think you can sit a fox next to a chameleon in the same shot and have them the same height when there are much more accurately sized humans, birds and snakes in the film. All in all, I think its a visually stunning piece of work, let down by a flawed story, poor script and unappealing characters.… Expand

With western films seemingly on the comeback in recent years, it was only a matter of time before an animated version of the wild wild west made it to our screens and it has done so in the guise of Rango.

Rango (Johnny Depp) is an eccentric chameleon with ambitions of one day becoming the thespian that he believes he is destined to be. Fate casts him a die and as with many animated films these days catapults him from within his comfort zone, accompanied by his ever trusty sidekick Mr. Timms (a plastic goldfish) into the barren and unforgiving wild... the wild west in fact. As usual Depp brings his own unique style to the character of Rango really making it his own.

Rango meets up with many other inhabitants of the desert (20+) who are quirky and unique animals in their own right giving the movie real depth and I have to say that the visuals in this are stunning. They are some of the best out there and it really is starting to get to that point that you forget it is an animation with the scenery and hot dry climate being portrayed looking top notch. Add the gritty aforementioned critters who look like they have been worn down by the desert sands over time and it's a hats off to the animators who have outdone their Pixar/Dreamworks rivals (it's a Nickelodeon production for those wondering).

The movies humour is great and combines lots of slapstick, good one liners and excellent facial expressions that really got me going but this I felt is traded off, if only slightly, as the movie advances so that the plot can develop further. As usual with these films there is some subtle and some not so subtle comic references for the older generations that are likely to swoop over a few younger heads. Links to old wild west films are strewn in as well with the spirit of the west and the man with no name making their traditional western appearances. In fact more so than usual I would say that the humour is based more towards an adult audience than that of a children's one.

Throughout the movie four singing mariachi owls accompany Rango narrating his tale a la the three mice from Babe, well not quite but you get the gist- maybe more akin to the rooster from Robin Hood and provide another perspective that does well to break the movie up and add to the comedy of it all. The mariachi owls music and the movie score also draws you in and any movie that can play Ride of the Valkyries on a banjo and still make it sound good wins my vote! Hans Zimmer (Batman, Inception, Gladiator, Lion King to name but a few) working his musical ability once again.

All in all Rango has managed to combine great jokes, funny characters and stunning visuals within a solid story. The combination of Depp and Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2,3) has worked well again and it seems to have broken the mould in so far as it's a children's animation and yet I can see the adults coming away with the bigger smiles.

Favourite quote: Owl 1 (In your best Mexican accent): "Here in Mojave desert animals have had millions of years to adapt to the harsh environment, but the lizard -- he is going to die."
Owl 2: "When is he going to die."
Owl 1: "Soon."
