At last - after the stifling summer blockbusters and sequels comes something almost like an indie (compared to others released around that time). Great job, very tense, very exciting, and I have more respect for Depp actor-wise.

Sound and cinematography were horrible. Cast was wasted. Plot was uninteresting and characters underdeveloped. Never have I preferred cleaning a litter box to watching a Michael Mann or Johnny Depp movie... but here we are! Seriously Sound and cinematography were horrible. Cast was wasted. Beautifully crafted, emotionally void, an inevitably doomed figure lurching toward his end, accompanied by gunfire and grave chordal progressions. Chorus toward an end.

I left the theater not quite sure whether or not I liked this film--there were some brilliant moments, but at times it felt quite scattered and clumsy. Like one critic said above, there seemed to be no reason to make this film--I kept catching glimpses of that, but it's like Michael Mann tried so hard to make everything so subtle that the whole film ends up getting lost. It really just made me want to watch The Assassination of Jesse James again, as that is a brilliant artsy gangster film, and this was just kind of rambling and lost in its own seeming profoundness.… Expand

An absolute classic. Great film. Historically accurate, amazingly told. Only problem is it's a bit slow. If it was half an hour shorter it would be the best film this year.

2 1/2 hours of boredom, blurry film, empty dialogue, shaky handicams, undeveloped characters, incoherent plot development, and disgraceful audio quality. Home movies have been made with better quality. This has to be the dullest, and probably the worst gangster film I have ever seen. After the first hour, I wished that I had rented The Untouchables on video rather than waste 20 bucks on this piece of crap. Poorly edited, poorly paced, and This has to be the dullest, and probably the worst gangster film I have ever seen. After the first hour, I wished that I had rented The Untouchables on video rather than waste 20 bucks on this piece of crap. Poorly edited, poorly paced, and long, the movie utterly fails as a gangster film. Especially given that everybody knows how this movie ends, Mann somehow manages to drag the finale out a full hour past when the film should have reached its natural conclusion. So how does it do as a character study? Not much better, actually. I didn't care about any of the characters, either the cops or the criminals. Depp is horribly miscast as Dillinger, and you never get beyond the cool veneer to understand what drove this man. The love story between him and his girlfriend is similarly pointless and uninvolving. Finally, the contrast between Dillinger and Purvis also falls flat, with only one scene where the two characters are on screen together. So for all of those who have not yet seen this film, ignore the positive reviews - these critics are either horribly misguided, or maybe they hang out with Mr. Mann. Whatever the case, it is hard to see this movie as anything but an unmitigated disaster.… Expand

Without question the best movie I've seen this summer. Very well written and executed. It starts off a bit slow but definately picks up after the first 30 minutes or so. I hated this film. The cinematography was poor, the acting nothing special, the script horrible, the whole movie was a complete waste of time. Very big disappointment.

Not bad, but a bit unnecessary. Depp is fine, Bale slightly less so. Lots of machine gun fights, some dull car chases, lots of mildly interesting gang interactions which lead nowhere in particular, and (of course) the obligatory OTT torture Not bad, but a bit unnecessary. Loved it! Johnny Depp was perfectly cast as Dillinger and very believable. Marion, who played Billie Frechette, his girlfriend had an ethereal look about her that you just couldn't take your eyes off her. They were absolute magic on Loved it! This is Michael Mann at the top of his form, with his spectacular use of HD to give the film a cutting edge yet old school feel, Depp is amazing and the supporting cast is also great, the one minor flaw that this film has is that you never really end up caring for christian bales character who is not in it a ton but enough to be noticeable. In the end this is a must see film that has one of the best endings in recent memory.… Expand

solid movie with some popular actors, but neither Johnny Depp nor Christian Bale was convincing, especially the cool round sunglasses were annoying. Overall there was too much style.

The movie focused on Johnny Depp (John Dillinger) life, i didn't feel the majority of Bale role in the movie, although he is the detective who takes the most wanted notorious gangsters down.

Focused on the days of the Great Depression, in efforts to capture the thug John Dillinger. The performances are well done although the plot lacked something to make it more dynamic. To see in these days of quarantine.

This was a good movie, well cast, photographed, acted and edited. Actual historic locations were used as often as possible, the real gun sound effects as well. Watching it 10 years later, what interests me most is that moment in history.This was a good movie, well cast, photographed, acted and edited. Actual historic locations were used as often as possible, the real gun sound effects as well. Watching it 10 years later, what interests me most is that moment in history. It is not shown, but Bonnie and Clyde were also killed in 1934,Al Capone was arrested a year earlier, in addition to all the guys in this movie-John Dillinger primarily. Police interrogation tactics were brutal and depicted as such. Apparently in reality, they were worse. Purvis had suspects beaten for weeks on end. He ended up committing suicide after Hoover demoted him for becoming too popular.

The Great Depression had been going on for several years, most people were primed to be sympathetic to bank robbers. This is when the FBI was created, networking evidence across the country. At the same time, crime was organizing, the Mafia was organizing prostitution and gambling across the country, they didn't want the risk associated with bank robbers. This is also when the IRS is learning to tax corporations, Capone being recognized as a corporate entity more so than a criminal. This is a moment in history where the country is losing it's innocence. This is also incidentally when the US was first learning about the power of propaganda and public image, as evidenced in Hoover's Jr detective squad, and newsreels encouraging people in the 'See something, say something' method of looking at their neighbors like they are dangerous. These elements, if noticed, really elevate the quality of this movie above standard action fare.… Expand

This is one of my all time favourite movies. Michael Mann did a great job getting every detail right here. The movie has a sense of realism to it since they used real locations. Just a incredible job playing him. He's a villain you want to root for. He's so charismatic and looks just like him. The entire cast did a great job. Marion Cotillard was breathtaking as Billie. The love story is done well. And the ending is heartbreaking. The bank robbery scenes are great and so are all the shootouts. This is really a epic masterpiece. I don't get all the bad reviews. We live in a world where people rate bad movies like Avengers Endgame 10/10 and give a great movie like this 0/10... People just have bad taste I guess..… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is a pretty average gangster film at the start and it didn't especially appeal to me, although by the end I was certainly more hooked. The characterisations are good by Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. The action scenes are pretty decent. One downside was that I found some quiet dialogue a bit difficult to follow at times. I imagine this would have looked pretty good on a big screen (cinema). This is a pretty decent film, not brilliant but not awful. If your really interested in the story this film is based on, then yes, I'd recommend it.… Expand

Has the style but that doesn't make up for how boring this movie is at times. Should of been a hell of a lot shorter.
Mann seems to be trying to make Heat 2 and falls well short.
