I've never seen a good film that was originally a game, so this was rather shocking to be honest. Visually it was rather well done, especially the production design and the visual effects were rather good. The overall story was not ingenious, but it was rather entertaining and there were no dull moments in the film. Being a Disney film, it did have the typical happy-ending, and some rather cliched cinematography (was too many slow motion scenes), but overall the film definitely was worth the watch. It's been a while since epic fantasies like this have hit the cinemas and were actually good. The last one, actually, could be the Lord of the Rings... which is sad. So, "Prince of Persia" most certainly is a well-needed and welcomed addition to the genre! Fun and entertaining - everything it ever really yearned to be. Expand

I think the trailer for this film made it look a lot sicker than it really was. Thought it could've been better and I was expecting a bit more but overall I'd say it was still a pretty decent flick.

The first thing you have to understand about this film is that it is based on a game. Once you realize that, the experience becomes a lot more enjoyable.

The best, an possibly the only good video game movie adaptation. It manages to make a coherent plot and characters that are worth caring about. The dialogue is poor in scenes but this is worth the watch.

However, this movie is based on a different game (although probably rather loosely). I enjoyed it as an action movie, with well-made fight scenes. The mediocre metacritic score is probably due to them judging the plot too harshly, which I'll admit could be improved on but is still pretty decent. I think the user score is much more accurate of the quality of this movie, though. It's worth watching once (if not twice) for its action scenes and its story and characters are pretty decent, too. Don't avoid it just because it's a "game movie". Expand

I am inclined to think that while it is flawed it was an entertaining and above average film. As I've said, it is flawed, the film is rushed sometimes, I personally would have liked more room to breathe, the script does have its weaknesses, some of it could have been more witty and less wordy and banal though there are some funny moments, and while I don't think Gemma Arterton is a bad actress-she was brilliant in Tess of the D'Urbevilles her chemistry with Gyllanhaal is rather dull and her character was quite vapid.

However, the visuals, cinematography, costumes, special effects and sets are all excellent, as is the rousing music and exciting action sequences. The story has some nice nods to the games but is essentially a stand-alone which I didn't mind at all, and for me it was a not-too-predictable and fun story. The direction is serviceable enough, and the acting apart from Arterton is good and the characters if slightly unoriginal and under-developed fun. Jake Gyllanhaal is a handsome and likable lead, Ben Kingsley is excellent and Alfred Molina steals the show.

In conclusion, I thought it was entertaining albeit with flaws. 7/10 Bethany Cox

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie features plenty of action with lots of fast paced sword fights and so there's quite a bit of violence presence, I'd say at least moderate bodily violence. This movie features numerous impressive camera pans of very scenic locations presumably of Persia, with CGI also used at times to really bring the movie to life - I found this to be quite an engrossing movie, with the lights turned low etc. I found my eyes glued to the set. I thought that the story was pretty good in as much as I didn't struggle too much to follow it, although you do want to pay attention to keep track of whats going on as its (like already mentioned) quite fast paced but its pretty easy to follow at least the basics without having to keep track of tens of different characters, which can be the case with other movies. I liked the use of wide sweeping camera angles at times which made me as a viewer feel somehow more involved or more present in the action at times - along with some impressive ariel shots, I thought that was good.

The movie is fairly light hearted at times with one character who is pretty comedic, there are some tongue in cheek moments which worked quite well I think. The main storyline is quite serious and it contains serious themes, such as the importance of listening to your gut instinct but I don't think it necessarily takes itself entirely seriously either, which I think is good as I often find it hard to take such fantasy based movies entirely seriously myself.

I found the ending to be quite good, while some might feel its a bit of a con because of what ultimately happens, to me it brought home the main theme (as mentioned in previous paragraph) and worked pretty well - I hadn't really seen it coming, perhaps I might have thought it through but there's alot of action throughout the movie so I'd been concentrating on that rather than trying to second guess the ultimate outcome of the movie. Also I note that the movies total runtime is just under two hours long, which is shorter than some other similar movies of this genre (I'd classify this as a fantasy action movie) - it lasted long enough to keep my attention but didn't run on too long to become a fantastical bore, put it that way. Having said that, I'd say that if you really don't like the appeal of other fantasy movies, think along the lines of modern movies such as The Mummy, then this probably isn't for you.

I thought that Jake Gyllenhaal was a good choice of actor to play the main role of Dastan as he seems quite believable in that role, seeming very emotive as that character and Gemma Arterton as Princess Tamina is equally emotive - the two of them interact quite well I suppose, at least I didn't feel the acting (by anyone in the cast) was cardboard. Other cast members of note include Ben Kingsley as the equivalent to the current king and Alfred Molina as a Sheik.

Its quite clear that they had a decent budget to spend on this movie with the use of CGI and the solid cast present but I'd say that it was money pretty well spent. If I was to criticise it, I'd say that there are some predictable elements within the storyline and that the main theme is perhaps a bit cheesy, though it didn't bother me too much.

This may not interest everyone but if it sounds like something you might enjoy then I'd gladly recommend it because I found it to be quite suspenseful and action packed, with no really boring, long drawn out scenes and the story was pretty easy to follow, which is a plus for this sort of (fantasy based) movie. I felt the cast was good and the only downside I could point out is there are one or two predictable elements and it could be seen as a little bit cheesy perhaps but none of that put me off. The only warning I'd give otherwise would be that it is a bit violent so not good viewing for younger children but it does carry a 12 rating anyway (I was slightly surprised it wasn't the higher 15 rating considering the amount of sword fights but most of the violence isn't too gratuitous I suppose) - otherwise I'm happy to recommend this movie.

Camel beats horse, that exalted emblem of the old west, in Sam Peckinpah's "Ride the High Country", because by the early-sixties, the cowboy was in transition, as the western genre was starting to demythologize itself. A tamed frontier, Camel beats horse, that exalted emblem of the old west, in Sam Peckinpah's "Ride the High Country", because by the early-sixties, the cowboy was in transition, as the western genre was starting to demythologize itself. A tamed frontier, the end-result of a successful Indian genocide, had rendered the cowboy useless, like the horse, suffering the ignominy of losing to a foreign mammal, and replaced by the motor car; the cowboy is reduced to security detail, in which two aging lawmen are hired to safeguard the gold from a mining camp. "Ride the High Country" marked the beginning of an era, the era of industrialization. Ostrich beats horse in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time", by which the flightless birds owned by Shiek Amar(Alfred Molina), a cowboy of sorts, are utilized for races, stealing the spotlight from cowboy's best friend in a usurpation which indicates the epoch that this reinvented western belongs to. The horse is humiliated; the mighty horse supplanted, dislocated from its rightful arena within the context of a diegesis predicated on the video game, and not for the first time. "Joust" was a coin-operated arcade game created by John Newcomer, in which knights, armed with lances, battled each other on ostriches with nary a horse in sight. Similar to the Peckinpah classic and Williams Electronics video game, the equine beast plays second fiddle to a lesser animal that is not indigenous to the western genre, especially in the scene where Amar, fearing that his entire flock of birds are lost, tenderly strokes a recovered ostrich's neck, which demonstrates the iron-clad bond previously reserved for man and horse. Whereas "Ride the High Country" demystified the western, "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" debunks the traditional filmic arts, since myths now derive, more often than not, from pixels. Expand

But the story is pretty stupid and it does suck, not much as Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider. It's not as good as the other Prince of Persia games that are based on. But my major problem is that who ever thought that Disney would make this so violent will be as cool as this. Like showing violence, killing with lots of blood, and many more to come. It's a shame, because no studio for Disney would make a violent game like that and the fans will be disappointment about this,it should be a different studio than this. But Prince of Persia is okay and little good for the video game adaptation, more than other video game films that are SUCKED so bad! Very entertaining, but nothing special. Expand

Pros:

-Pretty good characters, and the actor’s are doing a good job portraying them.
-When they do actually use the time travel dagger, the visuals on display are pretty spectacular.
-The visual design and production values in general are pretty good. Cons:
-Film isn’t particularly mind blowing. Like if you took out the Prince of Persia name this would most likely just be another generic live action Disney film. -There was some wasted potential with the time traveling dagger. If they abandoned the need for the thing to have some kind of fuel to use it’s powers and went for something similar to Edge of Tomorrow where each time the characters screw up during their quest they just go back and try again until they get it right, this could have been the first movie based on a video game property that actually manages to replicate the feeling of playing a video game. But alas, they didn’t do that.

Final verdict: Overall, I enjoyed Sands of Time, but I can’t help but notice the wasted potential here. This movie was so close to being the first video game movie that actually manages to replicate the feeling of playing the video game it’s based on, but they sacrificed that in favor of making a relatively standard live action Disney film from the early 2010’s. Still the music, visuals, characters, and action all still make this a decent flick that’s worth checking out if you are interested, and it still stands above most other video game film adaptations.

A hero known as The Prince of Persia "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is a visually stunning and grand special effects extravaganza that is based off the ultra-mega popular "Prince of Persia" video-game franchise that stretches over 21 years. However, it lacks the cohesive narrative and deep well thought out story that made the 2003 remake of the 1989 classic "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" (the game for which this film is based upon) the phenomenal video game that it was. But do not be despaired Mike Newell's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" does have one thing going for it is fun and has some great action sequences coupled with mild special effects. Sad to say, that is all this film has going for it as the well thought story and decent plot are buried beneath the sands of CGI overload and any chances of this film succeeding as well. Director Mike Newell(Four weddings and a Funeral, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco, Pushing Tin and Mona Lisa Smile) is a director I do not have very much respect for now don't get me wrong he has made some exceptional films(Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). It had more cheesy parts than memorable, awesome parts. Jake Gyllenhaal wasn't too bad as Prince Dastan, an adopted member of the royal family of Persia who stumbles upon a mysterious dagger which contains the amazing ability to rewind time when fueled with the great sands of time (which the origin of is never clearly explained). While the movie sells itself solely on the Disney, Jerry Bruckheimer, Pirates of the Caribbean producers, it fails to live up to any of the "Pirates" films. The adventure wasn't too bad, but unbelievable sets, cheesy accents and dialogs and ridiculous costumes tend to drag the audience into self questioning "Am i an idiot for watching this?". Well, you wouldn't exactly be classified as an idiot since this is a wedge (and that is definitely a cheese wedge) of fiction, but i just have to know, do these writers honestly think we are going to keep buying this crap? As for the movie itself, the acting was okay. Alfred Molina sort of did a really pathetic job to say the least, Gyllenhaal did what he could for the thin, video game based role which sadly doesn't cross the 'memorable' bridge. I never really played too many of the Prince of Persia video games. I did play the original and it always just kind of seemed like a satire of Persian adventure which is what the movie is in its entirety but to me it just had too much of that stupid, family oriented, Disney ride kind of adventure, much like "Sorcerers Apprentice" which is a Disney stink gem as well. I guess Prince of Persia was decent for what it was, but just decent. Expand

Past in the late period of the Persian Empire, with absolutely fictional characters, its not a historical film and has no relation with historical truth. It's all an invention, a fantasy. The script is interesting, promising entertainment and fulfilling this promise in a very positive way. Jake Gyllenhaal gives life to the film in the lead role, standing out in well-constructed action scenes. Ben Kingsley is a convincing and well-built villain, though it's a bit obvious he's, or will be, the film's big antagonist. Gemma Arterton was OK in her role, which mixes a bit of "Xena, Warrior Princess" and "lady in distress". The remaining actors are in supporting characters but they do their work well enough. The ending, however, is a bit sudden and unsettled from what was happening as if, in the middle of the movie, the protagonist became Indiana Jones and everything turned into a game of deadly, utterly boring, mazes and traps. Either way, this movie is good enough to entertain the audience, it's fun, it has very good action scenes, good CGI and a regular cinematography. Expand

Meh. Kinda boring. Lots of fighting. Not terrible, but definitely not up to what I would expect for a high-budget Disney block-buster.

With the big budget that it had i believed that it would be a great film....i was wrong. I give that vote for the stupid use of the budget, the banal recitation and the end, banaler than the history.

Even though I am a gamer, I usually refrain from watching such films, seeing as how the general consensus is that they can potentially ruin the game for you. Seeing a film based on "Prince of Persia" was a considerable risk for me, seeing as how I had never played the games. And maybe it's because of my lack of experience with the games that I didn't enjoy it as much as some others did. Jerry Bruckheimer, Mike Newell, and his crew tried their hardest to make a good video game movie, but unfortunately, it's poorly-written, wholly unoriginal, and above all, just not that fun. The film's action scenes are actually really boring, and even at 11 years old (my age when the film first came out), I was fighting back the urge to fall asleep in my seat. I'm sure fans of the game will find something to enjoy here, but all told, "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is a poor film that, even if its better than most video game-based films, isn't really worth watching at all. At times it is cheesy and preposterous enough, but at other times it’s either dreadful exposition dumps or irritatingly filmed action.

A terrible video game movie that stands on top of a heap of bad video game movies, vying for Prince of the Mountain.

The only things about this movie that are decent, are the visuals and the action. Past that, it's nothing but a hurricane of the worst Hollywood cliches, forced romance between two irritating characters, and a story that is a shadow of what was presented in the video game series.

Play any of the Prince of Persia games for a better experience, even the original 2D side scrollers.

Simply horrible. I am not a fanboy of dissing movies...I wanted to love this movie based on the idea that I grew up with the franchise, love popcorn movies, and needed time away from the teenagers; but, man, oh, man...garbage.

Plus, Prince Dastan is not only the most acrobatic man in persia but also the most lucky and blessed. In so many sequences he was at peril and at the last moment got magically rescued by his girlfriend or his brother or so unfortunate shmuck who got in the way of an arrow or snake. Heck, I would not have been surprised if at his wish he had just reached his hand out and said 'soard' and it would have magically appeared out of no where. Complete trash! Expand
