An absolute gem. The hardest part of loving this genre of cinema is the disdain of those who fail to see the magic.

The atmosphere of a small town in Japan is terrific. The innocence of children is marvelously well depicted. Links between characters are deep and intricated without being overwhelming nor headaching. The movie takes it time to set its environment and characters without rushing and witnessing such a calmness and serenity is a true delight in the contemporary cinematic landscape. Expand

My problem with some Ghibli movies is the fact that usually we were astonished and immersed in the perfect animation, as the story never ends cooking. The message ends up being the most important thing, even more than the plot.

My problem with some Ghibli movies is the fact that usually we were astonished and immersed in the perfect animation, as the story never ends cooking. The message ends up being the most important thing, even more than the plot.

Ponyo finds its own balace between the techniques and the storytelling care. The movie lets you be concerned about the characters, as the animation (perfect, as always) goes to the background.

Risky, but correctly well played.

She's doing her best for her family, and clearly loves them, but is also dissatisfied with her current living conditions. Despite all of this, she tries to do her best. It is the character of Lisa that grounds the surreal fantasy world of Ponyo in a human element.

To those who dismiss this as the "Bad Miyazaki", I say PONYO HUG! *glomp*
