I had hoped the Frankly, I'm disappointed. I spent some time looking into this film before seeing it, and had pretty much figured that all the negative reviews were from the impatient who wanted your typical Hollywood horror film. I had hoped the general critical reception was correct, and I would enjoy a slow-paced, tense horror film. I was very, very wrong. Like so many other reviewers, the main issue is that almost nothing happens. In the entire 1.5 hours, you are treated to some total of 3 minutes of 'the paranormal', and roughly 92 minutes of terribly predictable dialogue, bad acting, and well-beyond-stupid character action. It's a shocking waste of time with little to no horror value at all. Factually, there were roughly 100x more laughs than screams when I saw the film. I'm just surprised nobody walked out on it, as I've heard this is a fairly common occurrence, and I'd be lying if I denied the thought crossed my mind. Expand

I'm not convinced that this film deserves the title of "Horror Film" as much as "suspense thriller." Just the sheer amount of time it takes this movie to build makes it all but unbearable. The only conceivable "scary" part of this movie I'm not convinced that this film deserves the title of "Horror Film" as much as "suspense thriller." Just the sheer amount of time it takes this movie to build makes it all but unbearable. The only conceivable "scary" part of this movie happens in the last five minutes, and is nothing more than a screamer that you would have to be dull to not see coming. To make things worse, the film heavy draws upon 'creepy' audio cues which conveniently spoil any oncoming action. Yes it was made on a low budget, but that's no excuse to deliver something as unimpressive as Paranormal Activity. If you're into cheap thrills, you might just enjoy this movie. Maybe. Expand

It has the innate ability to either totally corrupt or empower a film. In this case, I wouldn't say the hype totally destroyed this film however it didn't measure up to what some of the critics were hailing it to be. There were definitely some scary moments and at one point I let out an empowered "what the fuck?!" but 'Paranormal' won't hold up on any all time list. Peli does put forth an amazing effort at utilizing minimum production for maximum effect, I'll give him that and the acting was incredibly organic and therefore believable. However, aside from the barrage of jump out scares this movie is a clever and plodding build-up to a somewhat obvious result. Definitely worth seeing, but by no means will this be locking arms with 'Exorcist' and 'The shining' at any point in the foreseeable future. Expand

It's riveting, but at the same time, it feels like the film embodies so many horror film cliches from past attempts ("The Blair Witch Project", "The Exorcist", and even Japanese movies such as "Ringu" are all clearly influences on this movie). It's frightening only in the same sense that dark hallways and randomly slamming doors are frightening. Beyond that, it's really a pretty boring movie. Just a couple... being a couple... on camera. After that, it's the couple arguing a lot, they begin going insane; you've heard it all before. Typical horror movie formula. I cannot lie; when the movie is scary, it really is pretty scary. However, it's mostly... not scary. It's mostly just the drama surrounding the fragile balance of sanity among the young couple. You spend most of the time watching (pretty much) nothing happening... just waiting for some noise or shadow to make you jump out of your shorts. That's pretty much the movie. Overall, good concept, poor execution. 5/10. Expand

I had very high expectations (something I usually try to avoid because you end up disappointed 90% of the time) for this movie and I wasn't disappointed at all! It's awesome! I've seen over 1000 horror movies and Paranormal I had very high expectations (something I usually try to avoid because you end up disappointed 90% of the time) for this movie and I wasn't disappointed at all! It's awesome! I've seen over 1000 horror movies and Paranormal Activity is definitely one of the best I've seen (top 50)! It's not one of the best I've seen only because it's one of the scariest, it's also one of the most realistic and it's the movie I've always dreamed of! I've always wanted someone to make a realistic movie like The Blair Witch Project about a family or a couple filming in their house to catch ghosts and this movie has everything that I wanted! It's very suspenseful and it has some truly effective scenes! A lot of people say that it's boring and I really don't get it! It's WAY too suspenseful to be boring! I've been trying to understand why the people that thought that it was boring went to see it since it was released! Why does someone who get bored easily go see a movie about a couple filming in their house? While we're at it, why does someone expect to be scared in a theater full of people? The fact that there are idiotc teens that can't stop talking and laughing 90% of the time doesn't help. Personally, I can't imagine finding a movie scary with 30 persons around me. I thought the movie was scary (compared to most movies), but I watched it alone in the dark with an headset. The fact that I believe (or want to) in ghosts helped as well. Actually, I can't imagine someone who doesn't believe in ghosts finding a ghost movie scary. What makes ghost movies scary is the fact that maybe ghosts exist. Anyway, the first few minutes of the movie is the only time I didn't feel uneasy! The atmosphere was simply creepy! Hell, even a few parts with nothing but the couple talking were creepy! I guess it was the expectation that something really bad was going to happen. Anyway, when the movie was about to end I felt bad because I really didn't want it to end and any movie that makes me feel this way deserves 5 stars. I Can't wait for the DVD. PS: All of the people who call the people who like this movie sheeps are immature idiots. Just because you think a movie is bad doesn't mean that those who think it's good are sheeps or wrong or whatever stupid *beep* bigots love to come up with. Expand

I mean if it doesn't scare you anyway than why call it a horror movie? The creepy late night bedroom ambience of the film is easliy transferrable to your own bedroom if you have a vivid imagination. A film like this is a good catalyst to creep yourself out late at night. It's not so much the movie I guess, but just how it can spark your morbid imagination. Less is more in this film. The problem with these fakely authentic films is that I always doubt the characters would continue filming everything. After awhile, in real-life, a real person would give up filming and get the hell out of there I think! This makes it hard to suspend your disbelief and suspension of disbelief is key in these type of films. Expand

The reason, I think, is that the director doesn't believe in ghosts, he just knows that other people do, which shows an obvious contempt not just for the audience, but for the genre as well. A good ghost movie, like "The Haunting", achieves its effects through its basic unknowability, exploiting everyone's ability to be frightened by what they don't-and can't-know. "Paranormal"is like the books about the siliness of religious belief that base their argument on the illogical beliefs of its practitioners, without addressing the question of why people believe them, not to mention, as William James did, the effect of that belief. The quality and editing are what you would expect out of a film with a $15,000 budget, but the trailers for the film are more than misleading. The only things that make anyone jump is the sound until the very last scene. But that's not saying much as the film is very quiet, almost silent, and as you are straining to hear this haunting, the film pops with a loud noise.... nothing scary, just going from quiet to loud a lot. There's one scene with good special effects but I was so detached from the film by that point, it would have taken someone lighting the theatre on fire to bring out any semblance of fear. This is a perfect example of why people stop going to a theatre to watch movies.... it got a lot of hype, the marketing campaign was done well enough to tease you into wondering if it really could be that scary, and it got some (strangely) glowing reviews from respected film critics as Roger Ebert. His 3.5/4.0 review has me really reconsidering his sanity at this point. Expand

The theatrical version, though a tighter and smoother edit, has an ending that makes me cringe (out of pure WTF is wrong with Steven Spielberg for adding a cliche and insipid ending.) The Festival version, Depends on which version you saw. The theatrical version, though a tighter and smoother edit, has an ending that makes me cringe (out of pure WTF is wrong with Steven Spielberg for adding a cliche and insipid ending.) The Festival version, though longer and not as smooth, has an ending that made me cringe (it got to me, was disturbing, realistic, and frightening.) I would recommend seeing this film with the original ending rather than the "lets make the ending like every other horror film made" via Steven Hackneyed Spielberg Who Once Made Great Films. PROPS to the director for making a "normal" haunted house film (creepy, realistic, and something one could find in the daily news) since this make it abnormal and worthy. PROPS to Paramount for releasing this, but a Fart In Your General Direction for changing the ending. If you were scared of sounds in the night as a child, if you have had experiences of the paranormal, this film will ring authentic and primal...in short, it may possibly cause child-like primal fear. To those who did not like the film, hey, go make something better, or stick to Saw 37. Expand

The build-up is very, very slow and frankly not too intriguing, but when we get in to the final couple of bedroom scenes, it gets undeniably creepy and, at the climax, terrifying. I admit to yelling and grabbing my girlfriend like one of the cliche audience members from the preview. So yeah, I give these guys major credit for what they accomplished with such a laughably small budget (some effects were impressive by any standards), but it has a handful of crippling flaws. I'm so disappointed by my experience, but you'll be glad to know none of it has to do with the movie. Now onto my short review. This movie is incredibly good, and I expect it to stay with me. There are no gimmicky, horror-movie tactics, and the gradual build of horror pays off BIG time in the end. The characters are believable, and I felt a strong connection to them throughout the movie. The best part about this movie is how "real" it is. At no point throughout the movie did I roll my eyes and sigh as I usually do when I can see obvious horror movie production faults. Adding to the reality of the film is the tempo. It goes from night to day and back frequently, and while some may dislike this, I found it pushing and pulling me to and from the edge of my seat. It was emotionally draining, which is a rare, and eery feeling for a movie, and it made the experience that much better. PLEASE see this movie. PLEASE do not see it in a theater. Expand

Definitely builds a good sense of dread with several hair-raising scenes that will stay with you. Considering the budget, very effective.

Omg! Creepiest scary movie I've seen in a looong time! Didn't need to use cheap scares either. I can't remember the last time I came home from a horror movie and was freaked out in my own home.

Not a single scary moment in the film. The most exciting moment of viewing the film isn't even viewing it, but walking into the theater riding high on the hype---oh yeah and it ending.
